We investigate rare seismicity in the neighborhood of the Fentale volcano, main Ethiopian rift that occurred in spring 2015 using data recorded by the Ethiopian Seismic Station Network. Over 1350 earthquakes are located and a seismic swarm is observed to the northeast of Fentale volcano, with the largest earthquake having a magnitude of 4.3 ML. Several VT (volcano-tectonic) and LP (long-period) events are observed in the swarm, indicating that it is induced by magmatic intrusion, consistent with dike-induced deformation in the same area inferred from satellite geodesy. The seismic activity commenced at about 40 km depth and migrated southwestward as it shallowed, towards Fentale volcano, suggesting that the dike feeding system might be influenced by the magma rich Afar Depression further to the northeast rather than the adjacent Fentale volcano. An earlier cluster of seismicity in the same area was recorded by a temporary deployment of seismic stations that ran from November 2001 to January 2003; extensive clusters of less well recorded seismic activity in the region occurred in June 1989, January–February 1981, October–November 2003, and 2004. Such frequent seismicity at the Fentale Volcanic Complex coupled with the adjacent fast-growing Lake Basaka poses an eminent and significant risk to Ethiopia's access to Djibouti port, its most important commercial route. This should be a wakeup call to concerned stakeholders to take precautionary measures by developing risk management and rapid response strategies.

There is a long-standing debate over how many and what types of plumes underlie the East African Rift and whether they do or do not drive its extension and consequent magmatism and seismicity. Here we present a new tomographic study of relative teleseismic S and SKS residuals that expands the resolution from previous regional studies below the northern East African Rift to image structure from the surface to the base of the transition zone. The images reveal two low-velocity clusters, below Afar and west of the Main Ethiopian Rift, that extend throughout the upper mantle and comprise several smaller-scale (about 100 km diameter), low-velocity features. These structures support those of our recent P tomographic study below the region. The relative magnitude of S to P residuals is around 3.5, which is consistent with a predominantly thermal nature of the anomalies. The S and P velocity anomalies in the low-velocity clusters can be explained by similar excess temperatures in the range of 100–200°C, consistent with temperatures inferred from other seismic, geochemical, and petrological studies. Somewhat stronger VS anomalies below Afar than west of the Main Ethiopian Rift may include an expression of volatiles and/or melt in this region. These results, together with a comparison with previous larger-scale tomographic models, indicate that these structures are likely small-scale upwellings with mild excess temperatures, rising from a regional thermal boundary layer at the base of the upper mantle.

A new earthquake catalogue of the Horn of Africa has been compiled for the period from 1960 to 1993. The threshold magnitude of this catalogue is found to be 4.5 (mb). Spatial and temporal variation of seismic energy release and b-value are investigated for this catalogue. The b-value is lower in the continental part of the Afro-Arabian rift system (Afar and southern Sudan) than in the southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden rifts which is in agreement with the increasing fault segmentation from north to south. From the recent spatial distribution of earthquakes in the East African Rift, Danakil & Aisha horsts and the Tanzanian Craton are behaving as prototypes of microplates. Earthquake source parameters in some parts of the East African Rift are studied for both the pre-WWSSN (World-Wide Seismographic Station Network) eras as well as afterwards. Digitized old seismograms from Wiechert-type instruments and bulletins are used to analyze source parameters for three pre-WWSSN events. The old analog seismograms are scanned and digitized using the nXscan software. P-wave first-motion readings and waveform data from short-period, broadband and long-period instruments are employed to investigate the earthquake source mechanisms. A total of 10 earthquakes in the magnitude range from 4.8 (mb) to 6.9 (Mw) are studied for fault mechanisms using P-wave first-motion readings and waveform inversion techniques. The results show both normal and oblique slip deformations with left-lateral strike-slip components. This indicates sinistral motion of the Somalia plate with respect to the Nubia plate, in agreement with the general E-W extension of the East African Rift.
