Search

First-order phase transitions in the early universe might produce a detectable background of gravitational waves. As these phase transitions can be generated by new physics, it is important to quantify these effects. Many pure Yang-Mills gauge theories are known to undergo first-order deconfinement phase transitions, with properties that can be studied with lattice simulations. Despite the recent surge of interest in $Sp(2N)$ gauge theories as a candidate for models of physics beyond the standard model, studies of these theories at finite temperature are still very limited. In this contribution we will present preliminary results of an ongoing numerical investigation of the thermodynamic properties of the deconfinement phase transition in $Sp(4)$ Yang-Mills theory, using the linear logarithmic relaxation algorithm. This method enables us to obtain a highly accurate determination of the density of states, allowing for a precise reconstruction of thermodynamic observables. We study under which conditions a first-order phase transition in a composite dark sector can yield an observable stochastic gravitational-wave signal. To this end, we employ the Linear-Sigma model featuring $N_f=3,4,5$ flavours and perform a Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis computation also accounting for the effects of the Polyakov loop. The model allows us to investigate the chiral phase transition in regimes that can mimic QCD-like theories incorporating in addition composite dynamics associated with the effects of confinement-deconfinement phase transition. A further benefit of this approach is that it allows to study the limit in which the effective interactions are weak. We show that strong first-order phase transitions occur for weak effective couplings of the composite sector leading to gravitational-wave signals potentially detectable at future experimental facilities., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

We perform an updated analysis on a long-lived axion domain wall (DW) network. By simulating the axion field on a 3D lattice and fitting an analytical model for the DW evolution, we identify the leading energy loss mechanisms of the DWs and compute the spectrum of axions emitted from the network. The contribution from the DWs to axion dark matter (DM) density is derived, with viable parameter space given. The application to both QCD axions and general axion-like particles (ALPs) are considered. Due to the new approaches taken, while our results bear consistency with earlier literature, notable discrepancies are also revealed, such as the prediction for DM abundance, which may have a profound impact on axion phenomenology at large., Comment: 19 pages, 25 figures

The LHAASO Collaboration has recently reported a measurement of the diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Galactic Plane at energies between 10 TeV and 1 PeV. While this emission is brighter than that expected from cosmic-ray interactions in the interstellar medium alone, we show that the intensity, spectrum, and morphology of this excess are in good agreement with that predicted from the "TeV halos" which surround the Milky Way's pulsar population. These results support the conclusion that TeV halos dominate the ultra-high-energy sky, and that these objects convert $\sim 5\%$ of their total spindown power into very-high and ultra-high-energy photons.

It is important to understand the implications of current observational constraints and potential signatures on the thermal history of dark matter. In this paper, we build the connection between the present-day velocities and the production mechanism of dark matter and find that the current observation on structure formation can be imposed to constrain the decoupling temperatures and the phase-space distribution of dark matter. We further explore the potential of distinguishing different possible thermal histories of dark matter with hypothetical future observational data. Using the freeze-in/-out scenarios as templates, we find that future precision data may uniquely identify the allowed parameter spaces for freeze-in and freeze-out, or even completely rule out one of the scenarios. We present the results of the search for an isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background (GWB) at nanohertz frequencies using the second data release of the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) for 25 millisecond pulsars and a combination with the first data release of the Indian Pulsar Timing Array (InPTA). We analysed (i) the full 24.7-year EPTA data set, (ii) its 10.3-year subset based on modern observing systems, (iii) the combination of the full data set with the first data release of the InPTA for ten commonly timed millisecond pulsars, and (iv) the combination of the 10.3-year subset with the InPTA data. These combinations allowed us to probe the contributions of instrumental noise and interstellar propagation effects. With the full data set, we find marginal evidence for a GWB, with a Bayes factor of four and a false alarm probability of $4\%$. With the 10.3-year subset, we report evidence for a GWB, with a Bayes factor of $60$ and a false alarm probability of about $0.1\%$ ($\gtrsim 3\sigma$ significance). The addition of the InPTA data yields results that are broadly consistent with the EPTA-only data sets, with the benefit of better noise modelling. Analyses were performed with different data processing pipelines to test the consistency of the results from independent software packages. The inferred spectrum from the latest EPTA data from new generation observing systems is rather uncertain and in mild tension with the common signal measured in the full data set. However, if the spectral index is fixed at 13/3, the two data sets give a similar amplitude of ($2.5\pm0.7)\times10^{-15}$ at a reference frequency of $1\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$. We perform correlation and periodicity search analyses on long-term multi-band light curves of the FSRQ 1510-089 observed by the space-based Fermi--Large Area Telescope in gamma-rays, the SMARTS and Steward Observatory telescopes in optical and near-infrared (NIR) and the 13.7 m radio telescope in Metsahovi Radio Observatory between 2008 and 2018. The z-transform discrete correlation function method is applied to study the correlation and possible time lags among these multi band light curves. Among all pairs of wavelengths, the gamma-ray vs. optical/NIR and optical vs. NIR correlations show zero time lags; however, both the gamma-ray and optical/NIR emissions precede the radio radiation. The Generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram, Weighted Wavelet Z-transform, and REDFIT techniques are employed to investigate the unresolved-core-emission dominated 37 GHz light curve and yield evidence for a quasi-period around 1540 days, although given the length of the whole data set it cannot be claimed to be significant. As one of the most energetic and brightest events, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can be treated as a promising probe of the high-redshift universe. Similar to type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), GRBs with same physical origin could be treated as standard candles. We select GRB samples with the same physical origin, which are divided into two groups. One group is consisted of 31 GRBs with a plateau phase feature of a constant luminosity followed by a decay index of about -2 in the X-ray afterglow light curves, and the other has 50 GRBs with a shallow decay phase in the optical light curves. For the selected GRB samples, we confirm that there is a tight correlation between the plateau luminosity $L_0$, the end time of plateau $t_b$ and the isotropic energy release $E_{\gamma,iso}$. We also find that the $L_0-t_b-E_{\gamma,iso}$ correlation is insensitive to the cosmological parameters and no valid limitations on the cosmological parameters can be obtained using this correlation. We explore a new three-parameter correlation $L_0$, $t_b$, and the spectral peak energy in the rest frame $E_{p,i}$ ($L_0-t_b-E_{p,i}$), and find that this correlation can be used as a standard candle to constrain the cosmological parameters. By employing the optical sample only, we find the constraints of $\Omega_m = 0.697_{-0.278}^{+0.402}(1\sigma)$ for a flat $\Lambda$CDM model. For the non-flat $\Lambda$CDM model, the best-fitting results are $\Omega_m = 0.713_{-0.278}^{+0.346}$, $\Omega_{\Lambda} = 0.981_{-0.580}^{+0.379}(1\sigma)$. For the combination of the X-ray and optical smaples, we find $\Omega_m = 0.313_{-0.125}^{+0.179}(1\sigma)$ for a flat $\Lambda$CDM model, and $\Omega_m = 0.344_{-0.112}^{+0.176}$, $\Omega_{\Lambda} = 0.770_{-0.416}^{+0.366}(1\sigma)$ for a non-flat $\Lambda$CDM model., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal, 13 pages, 9 figures and 2 tables

Powerful radio sources associated with super-massive black holes are among the most luminous objects in the Universe, and are frequently recognized both as cosmological probes and active constituents in the evolution of galaxies. We present alignments between radio jets and cold molecular gas in the environment of distant radio galaxies, and show that the brightness of the radio synchrotron source can be enhanced by its interplay with the molecular gas. Our work is based on CO J>1 observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) of three radio galaxies with redshifts in the range 1.4 < z < 2.1, namely MRC 0114-211 (z = 1.41), MRC 0156-252 (z = 2.02), and MRC 2048-272 (z = 2.05). These ALMA observations support previous work that found molecular gas out to 50 kpc in the circumgalactic environment, based on a CO(1-0) survey performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The CO emission is found along the radio axes but beyond the main radio lobes. When compared to a large sample of high-z radio galaxies from the literature, we find that the presence of this cold molecular medium correlates with an increased flux-density ratio of the main vs. counter lobe. This suggest that the radio lobe brightens when encountering cold molecular gas in the environment. While part of the molecular gas is likely related to the interstellar medium (ISM) from either the host or a companion galaxy, a significant fraction of the molecular gas in these systems shows very low excitation, with r$_{2-1/1-0}$ and r$_{3-2/1-0}$ values $\lesssim$0.2. In this paper, we examine chaotic inflation within the context of the energy-momentum squared gravity (EMSG) focusing on the energy-momentum powered gravity (EMPG) that incorporates the functional $f(\mathbb{T}^2)\propto (\mathbb{T}^2)^{\beta}$ in the Einstein-Hilbert action, in which $\beta$ is a constant and $\mathbb{T}^2\equiv T_{\mu \nu}T^{\mu \nu}$ where $T_{\mu \nu}$ is the energy-momentum tensor, which we consider to represent a single scalar field with a power-law potential. We demonstrate that the presence of EMSG terms allows the single-field monomial chaotic inflationary models to fall within current observational constraints, which are otherwise disfavored by Planck and BICEP/Keck findings. We show that the use of a non-canonical Lagrangian with chaotic potential in EMSG can lead to significantly larger values of the non-Gaussianity parameter, $f_{\rm Nl}^{\rm equi}$ whereas EMSG framework with canonical Lagrangian gives rise to results similar to those of the standard single-field model., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures, and 2 tables, added discussion, accepted by Physics of the Dark Universe

Earth can act as a transducer to convert ultralight bosonic dark matter (axions and hidden photons) into an oscillating magnetic field with a characteristic pattern across its surface. Here we describe the first results of a dedicated experiment, the Search for Non-Interacting Particles Experimental Hunt (SNIPE Hunt), that aims to detect such dark-matter-induced magnetic-field patterns by performing correlated measurements with a network of magnetometers in relatively quiet magnetic environments (in the wilderness far from human-generated magnetic noise). Our experiment constrains parameter space describing hidden-photon and axion dark matter with Compton frequencies in the 0.5-5.0 Hz range. Limits on the kinetic-mixing parameter for hidden-photon dark matter represent the best experimental bounds to date in this frequency range., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures. In type I seesaw models, the right-handed neutrinos are typically super-heavy, consistent with the generation of baryon asymmetry via standard leptogenesis. Primordial gravitational waves of cosmological origin provides a new window to probe high scale physics, which would otherwise be inaccessible. By considering a {\em global} $U(1)_{B-L}$ extension of the type I seesaw model, we explore the connection between neutrino mass and primordial gravitational waves arising from the dynamics of global cosmic string network. As a concrete example, we study a global $U(1)_{B-L}$ extension of the Littlest Seesaw model and show that the inevitable GW signals, if detectable, probe the parameter space that can accommodate neutrino oscillation data and successful leptogenesis, while respecting theoretical constraints like perturbativity of the theory. Including CMB constraints from polarization and dark radiation leaves a large regions of parameter space of the model, including the best fit regions, which can be probed by GW detectors like LISA and ET in the near future. In general, the GW detectors can test high scale type I seesaw models with the heaviest right-handed neutrino mass above $2.5 \times 10^{14}$ GeV, assuming the perturbativity, and $7 \times 10^{13}$ GeV assuming that the coupling between the heaviest right-handed neutrino and the $U(1)_{B-L}$ breaking scalar is less than unity., Comment: 25 pages including references, 3 figures, comments are welcome

Filamentary structures in neutral hydrogen (H I) emission are well-aligned with the interstellar magnetic field, so H I emission morphology can be used to construct templates that strongly correlate with measurements of polarized thermal dust emission. We explore how the quantification of filament morphology affects this correlation. We introduce a new implementation of the Rolling Hough Transform (RHT) using spherical harmonic convolutions, which enables efficient quantification of filamentary structure on the sphere. We use this spherical RHT algorithm along with a Hessian-based method to construct H I-based polarization templates. We discuss improvements to each algorithm relative to similar implementations in the literature and compare their outputs. By exploring the parameter space of filament morphologies with the spherical RHT, we find that the most informative H I structures for modeling the magnetic field structure are the thinnest resolved filaments. For this reason, we find a $\sim10\%$ enhancement in the $B$-mode correlation with dust polarization with higher-resolution H I observations. We demonstrate that certain interstellar morphologies can produce parity-violating signatures, i.e., nonzero $TB$ and $EB$, even under the assumption that filaments are locally aligned with the magnetic field. Finally, we demonstrate that $B$ modes from interstellar dust filaments are mostly affected by the topology of the filaments with respect to one another and their relative polarized intensities, whereas $E$ modes are mostly sensitive to the shapes of individual filaments., Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures

We perform a SubHalo Abundance Matching (SHAM) study with two algorithms: {$\sigma, V_{\rm ceil}, v_{\rm smear}$}-SHAM and {$\sigma, V_{\rm ceil},f_{\rm sat}$}-SHAM. These are designed to reproduce the clustering on 5--30$\,h^{-1}\,{\rm Mpc}$ of DESI One Percent Survey targets: Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs), Emission Line Galaxies (ELGs) and Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs) at $0.4

We present the probabilistic stellar mass function (pSMF) of galaxies in the DESI Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS), observed during the One-Percent Survey. The One-Percent Survey was one of DESI's survey validation programs conducted from April to May 2021, before the start of the main survey. It used the same target selection and similar observing strategy as the main survey and successfully observed the spectra and redshifts of 143,017 galaxies in the $r < 19.5$ magnitude-limited BGS Bright sample and 95,499 galaxies in the fainter surface brightness and color selected BGS Faint sample over $z < 0.6$. We derive pSMFs from posteriors of stellar mass, $M_*$, inferred from DESI photometry and spectroscopy using the Hahn et al. (2022a; arXiv:2202.01809) PRObabilistic Value-Added BGS (PROVABGS) Bayesian SED modeling framework. We use a hierarchical population inference framework that statistically and rigorously propagates the $M_*$ uncertainties. Furthermore, we include correction weights that account for the selection effects and incompleteness of the BGS observations. We present the redshift evolution of the pSMF in BGS as well as the pSMFs of star-forming and quiescent galaxies classified using average specific star formation rates from PROVABGS. Overall, the pSMFs show good agreement with previous stellar mass function measurements in the literature. Our pSMFs showcase the potential and statistical power of BGS, which in its main survey will observe >100$\times$ more galaxies. General Relativistic Entropic Acceleration (GREA) gives a general framework in which to study multiple out-of-equilibrium phenomena in the context of general relativity, like the late accelerated expansion of the universe or the formation of galaxies and the large scale structure of the universe. Here we study the consequences of mass accretion onto massive Black Holes. We find that a population of Super Massive Black Holes (SMBH) whose mass grows significantly due to accretion can act as a source of entropic acceleration and constitute a significant part of the present acceleration of the Universe., Comment: 4 pages

We investigate the potential of low-redshift Lyman alpha (Ly$\alpha$) forest for constraining active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback models by analyzing the Illustris and IllustrisTNG simulation at z=0.1. These simulations are ideal for studying the impact of AGN feedback on the intergalactic medium (IGM) as they share initial conditions with significant differences in the feedback prescriptions. Both simulations reveal that the IGM is significantly impacted by AGN feedback. Specifically, feedback is stronger in Illustris and results in reducing cool baryon fraction to 23% relative to 39% in IllustrisTNG. However, when comparing various statistics of Ly$\alpha$ forest such as 2D and marginalized distributions of Doppler widths and H I column density, line density, and flux power spectrum with real data, we find that most of these statistics are largely insensitive to the differences in feedback models. This lack of sensitivity arises because of the fundamental degeneracy between the fraction of cool baryons and the H I photoionization rate ($\Gamma_{\rm HI}$) as their product determines the optical depth of the Ly$\alpha$ forest. Since the $\Gamma_{\rm HI}$ cannot be precisely predicted from first principles, it needs to be treated as a nuisance parameter adjusted to match the observed Ly$\alpha$ line density. After adjusting $\Gamma_{\rm HI}$, the distinctions in the considered statistics essentially fade away. Only the Ly$\alpha$ flux power spectrum at small spatial scales exhibits potentially observable differences, although this may be specific to the relatively extreme feedback model employed in Illustris. Without independent constraints on either $\Gamma_{\rm HI}$ or cool baryon fraction, constraining AGN feedback with low-redshift Ly$\alpha$ forest will be very challenging., Comment: 20 Pages, 11 Figures, Submitted to MNRAS

A new (improved) model of inflation and primordial black hole (PBH) formation is proposed by combining Starobinsky model of inflation, Appleby-Battye-Starobinsky (ABS) model of dark energy and a quantum correction in the modified $F(R)$ gravity. The energy scale parameter in the ABS model is taken to be close to the inflationary scale, in order to describe double inflation instead of dark energy. The quantum correction is given by the term quartic in the spacetime scalar curvature $R$ with a negative coefficient $(-\delta)$ in the $F(R)$ function. It is demonstrated that very good agreement (within $1\sigma$) with current measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation can be achieved by choosing the proper value of $\delta$, thus solving the problem of low values of the tilt of CMB scalar perturbations in the earlier proposed model in arXiv:2205.00603. A large (by the factor of $10^7$ against CMB) enhancement in the power spectrum of scalar perturbations is achieved by fine-tuning the parameters of the model. It is found by numerical analysis that it can lead to formation of asteroid-size PBH with the masses up to $10^{20}$ g, which may form dark matter in the current universe., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, LaTeX; minor corrections

IceCube collaboration has previously reported an evidence for neutrino signal from a Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. This may suggest that all Seyfert galaxies emit neutrinos. To test this hypothesis, we identify the best candidate neutrino sources among nearby Seyfert galaxies, based on their hard X-ray properties. Only two other sources, NGC 4151 and NGC 3079 are expected to be detectable in 10 years of IceCube data. We find an evidence for neutrino signal from both sources in publicly available ten-year IceCube dataset. The chance coincidence probability to find the observed neutrino count excesses in the directions of the two out of two expected sources, in addition to the previously reported brightest source, is p<2.6e-7. This corresponds to the detection of Seyfert galaxies as a neutrino source class., Comment: 4 pages

The current reference High-latitude time domain survey increases the completeness of transients with prism temporal time series data by adjusting the ratio of prism-to-imaging time. However, there are two other nobs that allow for a more complete prism coverage: prism cadence and exposure time. The presence of axion strings in the Universe after recombination can leave an imprint on the polarization pattern of the cosmic microwave background radiation through the phenomenon of axion-string-induced birefringence via the hyperlight axion-like particle's coupling to electromagnetism. Across the sky, the polarization rotation angle is expected to display a patchwork of uniform regions with sharp boundaries that arise as the `shadow' of axion string loops. The statistics of such a birefringence sky map are therefore necessarily non-Gaussian. In this article we quantify the non-Gaussianity in axion-string-induced birefringence using two techniques, kurtosis and bispectrum, which correspond to $4$- and $3$-point correlation functions. If anisotropic birefringence were detected in the future, a measurement of its non-Gaussian properties would facilitate a discrimination across different new physics sources generally, and in the context of axion strings specifically, it would help to break degeneracies between the axion-photon coupling and properties of the string network., Comment: 12 pages, plus appendix, 6 figures. v3: JCAP Version

Measurements of the primordial element abundances provide us with an important probe of our universe's early thermal history, allowing us to constrain the expansion rate and composition of our universe as early as $\sim 1 \, {\rm s}$ after the Big Bang. Prior to this time, we have essentially no empirical information on which to base any such claims. In this paper, we imagine a future time in which we have not only detected the particles that make up the dark matter, but have measured their mass and annihilation cross section with reasonable precision. In analogy to the light element abundances, the dark matter abundance in this scenario could be used to study and constrain the expansion rate and composition of our universe at the time of dark matter freeze out, which for a standard thermal relic occurs at $T_f \sim m_{\chi}/20$, corresponding to $t \sim 4 \times 10^{-10} \, {\rm s} \times ({\rm TeV}/m_{\chi})^2$, many orders of magnitude prior to the onset of Big Bang nucleosynthesis. As examples, we consider how such measurements could be used to constrain scenarios which feature exotic forms of radiation or matter, a ultralight scalar, or modifications to gravity, each of which have the potential to be much more powerfully probed with dark matter than with the light element abundances., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Motivated by constraints on the dark energy equation of state from supernova-data, we propose a formalism for the Bayesian inference of functions: Starting at a functional variant of the Kullback-Leibler divergence we construct a functional Fisher-matrix and a suitable partition functional which takes on the shape of a path integral. After showing the validity of the Cram\'er-Rao bound and unbiasedness for functional inference in the Gaussian case, we construct Fisher-functionals for the dark energy equation of state constrained by the cosmological redshift-luminosity relationship of supernovae of type Ia, for both the linearised and the lowest-order non-linear model. Introducing Fourier-expansions and expansions into Gegenbauer-polynomials as discretisations of the dark energy equation of state function shows how the uncertainty on the inferred function scales with model complexity and how functional assumptions can lead to errors in extrapolation to poorly constrained redshift ranges., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

We present arguments for including observations with all of the Wide Field Instrument imaging filters, with the exception of F146, within the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (\emph{Roman}) High Latitude Time Domain Survey (HLTDS). Several pulsar timing array collaborations recently reported evidence of a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) at nHz frequencies. Whilst the SGWB could originate from the merger of supermassive black holes, it could be a signature of new physics near the 100 MeV scale. Supercooled first-order phase transitions (FOPTs) that end at the 100 MeV scale are intriguing explanations, because they could connect the nHz signal to new physics at the electroweak scale or beyond. Here, however, we provide a clear demonstration that it is not simple to create a nHz signal from a supercooled phase transition, due to two crucial issues that should be checked in any proposed supercooled explanations. As an example, we use a model based on non-linearly realized electroweak symmetry that has been cited as evidence for a supercooled explanation. First, we show that a FOPT cannot complete for the required transition temperature of around 100 MeV. Such supercooling implies a period of vacuum domination that hinders bubble percolation and transition completion. Second, we show that even if completion is not required or if this constraint is evaded, the Universe typically reheats to the scale of any physics driving the FOPT. The hierarchy between the transition and reheating temperature makes it challenging to compute the spectrum of the SGWB., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

We present a new self-consistent semi-analytic model of the first stars and galaxies to explore the high-redshift ($z{>}15$) Population III (PopIII) and metal-enriched star formation histories. Our model includes the detailed merger history of dark matter halos generated with Monte Carlo merger trees. We calibrate the minimum halo mass for PopIII star formation from recent hydrodynamical cosmological simulations that simultaneously include the baryon-dark matter streaming velocity, Lyman-Werner (LW) feedback, and molecular hydrogen self-shielding. We find an overall increase in the resulting star formation rate density (SFRD) compared to calibrations based on previous simulations (e.g., the PopIII SFRD is over an order of magnitude higher at $z=35-15$). We evaluate the effect of the halo-to-halo scatter in this critical mass and find that it increases the PopIII stellar mass density by a factor of ${\sim}1.5$ at $z{>}15$. Additionally, we assess the impact of various semi-analytic/analytic prescriptions for halo assembly and star formation previously adopted in the literature. For example, we find that models assuming smooth halo growth computed via abundance matching predict SFRDs similar to the merger tree model for our fiducial model parameters, but that they may underestimate the PopIII SFRD in cases of strong LW feedback. Finally, we simulate sub-volumes of the Universe with our model both to quantify the reduction in total star formation in numerical simulations due to a lack of density fluctuations on spatial scales larger than the simulation box, and to determine spatial fluctuations in SFRD due to the diversity in halo abundances and merger histories., Comment: Submitted to ApJ -- 21 Pages, 9 Figures

The recent observations from the James Webb Space Telescope have led to a surprising discovery of a significant density of massive galaxies with masses of $M \ge 10^{10.5} M_{\odot}$ at redshifts of approximately $z\sim 10$. This corresponds to a stellar mass density of roughly $\rho_*\sim 10^6 M_{\odot} Mpc^{-3}$. Despite making conservative assumptions regarding galaxy formation, this finding may not be compatible with the standard $\Lambda$CDM cosmology that is favored by observations of CMB Anisotropies from the Planck satellite. In this paper, we confirm the substantial discrepancy with Planck's results within the $\Lambda$CDM framework. Assuming a value of $\epsilon=0.2$ for the efficiency of converting baryons into stars, we indeed find that the $\Lambda$CDM model is excluded at more than $99.7 \%$ confidence level (C.L.). An even more significant exclusion is found for $\epsilon \sim 0.1$, while a better agreement, but still in tension at more than $95 \%$, is obtained for $\epsilon =0.32$. This tension, as already discussed in the literature, could arise either from systematics in the JWST measurements or from new physics. Here, as a last-ditch effort, we point out that disregarding the large angular scale polarization obtained by Planck, which allows for significantly larger values of the matter clustering parameter $\sigma_8$, could lead to better agreement between Planck and JWST within the $\Lambda$CDM framework. Interestingly, the model compatible with Planck temperature-only data and JWST observation also favors a higher Hubble constant $H_0=69.0\pm1.1$ km/s/Mpc at $68\%$ C.L., in better agreement with observations based on SN-Ia luminosity distances., Comment: 5 pages, 2 Figures, revised

We investigate the production of non-thermal dark matter (DM), $\chi$, during post-inflationary reheating era. For the inflation, we consider two slow roll single field inflationary scenarios - generalized version of Hilltop (GH) inflation, and Coleman-Weinberg (NM-CW) inflation with non-minimal coupling between inflaton and curvature scalar. Using a set of benchmark values that comply with the current constraints from Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) data for each inflationary model, we explored the parameter space involving mass of dark matter particles, $m_\chi$, and coupling between inflaton and $\chi$, $y_\chi$. For these benchmarks, we find that tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ can be as small as $2.69\times 10^{-6}$ for GH and $3\times 10^{-3}$ for NM-CW inflation, both well inside $1-\sigma$ contour on scalar spectral index versus $r$ plane from Planck 2018+BICEP 3+Keck Array 2018 dataset, and testable by future cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations e.g. Simons Observatory. For the production of $\chi$ from the inflaton decay satisfying CMB and other cosmological bounds and successfully explaining total cold dark matter density of the present universe, we find that $y_\chi$ should be within this range ${\cal O}\left(10^{-8}\right) \gtrsim y_\chi\gtrsim {\cal O}\left(10^{-17}\right)$ for both inflationary scenarios. We also show that, even for the same inflationary scenario, the allowed parameter space on reheating temperature versus $m_\chi$ plane alters with inflationary parameters including scalar spectral index, tensor-to-scalar ratio, and energy scale of inflation., Comment: 38 pages, 6 figures

Classification of galaxies is traditionally associated with their morphologies through visual inspection of images. The amount of data to come renders this task inhuman and Machine Learning (mainly Deep Learning) has been called to the rescue for more than a decade. However, the results look mitigate and there seems to be a shift away from the paradigm of the traditional morphological classification of galaxies. In this paper, I want to show that the algorithms indeed are very sensitive to the features present in images, features that do not necessarily correspond to the Hubble or de Vaucouleurs vision of a galaxy. However, this does not preclude to get the correct insights into the physics of galaxies. I have applied a state-of-the-art ''traditional'' Machine Learning clustering tool, called Fisher-EM, a latent discriminant subspace Gaussian Mixture Model algorithm, to 4458 galaxies carefully classified into 18 types by the EFIGI project. The optimum number of clusters given by the Integrated Complete Likelihood criterion is 47. The correspondence with the EFIGI classification is correct, but it appears that the Fisher-EM algorithm gives a great importance to the distribution of light which translates to characteristics such as the bulge to disk ratio, the inclination or the presence of foreground stars. The discrimination of some physical parameters (bulge-to-total luminosity ratio, $(B -- B)T$ , intrinsic diameter, presence of flocculence or dust, arm strength) is very comparable in the two classifications.

In this study, a refined approach for multicomponent fitting of active galactic nuclei (AGN) spectra is presented utilizing the newly developed Python code $fantasy$ (fully automated python tool for AGN spectra analysis). AGN spectra are modeled by simultaneously considering the underlying broken power-law continuum, predefined emission line lists, and an Fe II model, which is here extended to cover the wavelength range 3700 - 11000 A. The Fe II model, founded solely on atomic data, effectively describes the extensive emission of the complex iron ion in the vicinity of the H$\gamma$ and H$\beta$ lines, as well as near the H$\alpha$ line, which was previously rarely studied. The proposed spectral fitting approach is tested on a sample of high-quality AGN spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 17. The results indicate that when Fe II emission is present near H$\beta$, it is also detected redward from H$\alpha$, potentially contaminating the broad H$\alpha$ line wings and thus affecting the measurements of its flux and width. The production of Fe II emission is found to be strongly correlated with Eddington luminosity and appears to be controlled by the similar mechanism as the hydrogen Balmer lines. The study highlights the benefits of fitting AGN type 1 spectra with the $fantasy$ code, pointing that it may be used as a robust tool for analyzing a large number of AGN spectra in the coming spectral surveys., Comment: Accepted in ApJS

We present an approximate treatment of the mixing between $\nu_{\tau}$ ($\bar\nu_{\tau}$) and a sterile species $\nu_s$ ($\bar\nu_s$) with a vacuum mass-squared difference of $\sim$ 10$^2$-10$^3$ keV$^2$ in protoneutron stars created in core-collapse supernovae. Including production of sterile neutrinos through both resonant flavor conversion and collisions, we track the evolution of the $\nu_{\tau}$ lepton number due to both escape of sterile neutrinos and diffusion. Our approach provides a reasonable treatment of the pertinent processes discussed in previous studies and serves a pedagogical purpose to elucidate the relevant physics. We report ALMA detections of [CII] and dust continuum in Az9, a multiply-imaged galaxy behind the Frontier Field cluster MACSJ0717.5+3745. The bright [CII] emission line provides a spectroscopic redshift of z = 4.274. This strongly lensed (mu = 7 +/- 1) galaxy has an intrinsic stellar mass of only 2e9 Msun and a total star formation rate of 26 Msun/yr (~80% of which is dust obscured). Using public magnification maps, we reconstruct the [CII] emission in the source plane to reveal a stable, rotation-dominated disk with V/sigma = 5.3, which is > 2x higher than predicted from simulations for similarly high-redshift, low-mass galaxies. In the source plane, the [CII] disk has a half-light radius of 1.8 kpc and, along with the dust, is spatially offset from the peak of the stellar light by 1.4 kpc. Az9 is not deficient in [CII]; L[CII]/LIR = 0.0027 consistent with local and high redshift normal star forming galaxies. While dust-obscured star formation is expected to dominate in higher mass galaxies, such a large reservoir of dust and gas in a lower mass disk galaxy 1.4 Gyr after the Big Bang challenges our picture of early galaxy evolution. Furthermore, the prevalence of such low-mass dusty galaxies has important implications for the selection of the highest redshift dropout galaxies with JWST. We present a strategy to obtain equations of general relativity for an irrotational dust continuum within a flow-orthogonal foliation of spacetime from the equations of Newtonian gravitation, and vice versa, without employing a weak field expansion or a limiting process on the speed of light. We argue that writing Newton's equations in a Lagrangian frame and relaxing integrability of vector gradients is sufficient to obtain equations that are identical to Einstein's equations in 3+1 form when respecting the Lorentzian signature of the time-parametrization. We propose to distinguish the nature of neutrino masses, Dirac vs Majorana, from the spectrum of gravitational waves generated. We study two simple models of Majorana and Dirac mass genesis motivated by generating small neutrino masses without assuming tiny Yukawa couplings. For Majorana neutrinos, spontaneous breaking of the gauged $B-L$ symmetry gives a cosmic string induced gravitational wave signal flat over a large range of frequencies, whereas for Dirac neutrinos, spontaneous and soft-breaking of a $Z_2$ symmetry generate a peaked gravitational wave spectrum from annihilation of domain walls. It is discussed in detail the complete mathematical model of gravitational lensing on a single cosmic string (CS) of general shape and position with respect to the line of sight. CS are one-dimensional extended objects assuredly predicted by modern cosmology. The presence of CS changes the global geometry of the Universe, could clarify the properties of the early Universe, including inflation models, and could serve as a unique proof of higher-dimensional theories. Despite the fact that CS have not yet been reliable detected, there are several strong independent indications of the existence of the CS, based of CMB analysis and search of gravitational lens chains with special properties. However, early considered models of straight CS presented only a small fraction of the general CS-configurations to be observed. Now we propose model which could significantly increase the possibilities of CS observational search. It is considered more realistic models have necessarily include the inclinations and bends of the CS. This work provides, at lower order, general analytical solutions for the orbital separation, merging time, and orbital frequency of binary systems emitting gravitational waves while being submitted to mass variations. Specific features, depending on the exponent of the mass derivative, are investigated in details. Two phenomenologically interesting cases are explicitly considered : i) binaries formed by two light primordial black holes submitted to Hawking evaporation and ii) bodies driven by a Bondi accretion of phantom dark energy. It is shown that three different regimes arise, including an intricate non-monotonic behaviour of the system. We study subtle imprints that could be associated with those phenomena. A careful analysis of the conditions of validity of the different hypotheses performed is finally carried out.

We present the first comprehensive Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) analysis of the DESI One-Percent survey Luminous Red Galaxy (LRG) and Quasi-Stellar Object (QSO) samples. We constrain the HOD of each sample and test possible HOD extensions by fitting the redshift-space galaxy 2-point correlation functions in 0.15 < r < 32 Mpc/h in a set of fiducial redshift bins. We use AbacusSummit cubic boxes at Planck 2018 cosmology as model templates and forward model galaxy clustering with the AbacusHOD package. We achieve good fits with a standard HOD model with velocity bias, and we find no evidence for galaxy assembly bias or satellite profile modulation at the current level of statistical uncertainty. For LRGs in 0.4 < z < 0.6, we infer a satellite fraction of fsat = 11+-1%, a mean halo mass of log10 Mh = 13.40+0.02-0.02, and a linear bias of blin = 1.93+0.06-0.04. For LRGs in 0.6 < z < 0.8, we find fsat = 14+-1%, log10 Mh = 13.24+0.02-0.02, and blin = 2.08+0.03-0.03. For QSOs, we infer fsat = 3+8-2%, log10 Mh = 12.65+0.09-0.04, and blin = 2.63+0.37-0.26 in redshift range 0.8 < z < 2.1. Using these fits, we generate a large suite of high-fidelity galaxy mocks. We also study the redshift-evolution of the DESI LRG sample from z = 0.4 up to z = 1.1, revealing significant and interesting trends in mean halo mass, linear bias, and satellite fraction., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, comments welcome

The lensing effect of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is a powerful tool for our study of the distribution of matter in the universe. Currently, the quadratic estimator (EQ) method, which is widely used to reconstruct lensing potential, has been known to be sub-optimal for the low-noise levels polarization data from next-generation CMB experiments. To improve the performance of the reconstruction, other methods, such as the maximum likelihood estimator and machine learning algorithms are developed. In this work, we present a deep convolutional neural network model named the Residual Dense Local Feature U-net (RDLFUnet) for reconstructing the CMB lensing convergence field. By simulating lensed CMB data with different noise levels to train and test network models, we find that for noise levels less than $5\mu$K-arcmin, RDLFUnet can recover the input gravitational potential with a higher signal-to-noise ratio than the previous deep learning and the traditional QE methods at almost the entire observation scales., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted by ApJ

We show that gravity models, such as $f(\mathcal{L}_{\rm m})$, $f(g_{\mu\nu} T^{\mu\nu})$ and $f(T_{\mu\nu} T^{\mu\nu})$, that modify the introduction of the material source in the usual Einstein-Hilbert action by adding only matter-related terms to the matter Lagrangian density $\mathcal{L}_{\rm m}$ are equivalent to general relativity with nonminimal interactions. Through the redefinition $\mathcal{L}_{\rm m}+f \rightarrow \mathcal{L}_{\rm m}^{\rm tot}$, these models are exactly GR, yet the usual material field $T_{\mu\nu}$ and its accompanying partner, viz., the modification field $T_{\mu\nu}^{\rm mod}$ interact nonminimally. That is, $\nabla^{\mu}T_{\mu\nu}=-Q_{\nu}=-\nabla^{\mu}T_{\mu\nu}^{\rm mod}$, where $Q_{\nu}$ is the interaction kernel that governs the rate of energy transfer. We focus on the particular model, the energy-momentum squared gravity, where the usual material field $T_{\mu\nu}$ brings in an accompanying energy-momentum squared field , $T_{\mu\nu}^{\rm emsf}$ along with a sui generis nonminimal interaction between them. Compared to usual phenomenological nonminimal interaction models in the literature, EMSF gives rise to more intricate interaction kernels having covariant formulation even with simple forms of the $f$ function. We elaborate upon EMSF via some different aspects: a DE component induced from the interaction of sources such as cold dark matter and relativistic species with their accompanying EMSFs generating interacting DE-DM models, mimicking noncanonical scalar field, etc., or a Hoyle-type creation field generating steady-state universe models extended to fluids other than dust and a mimicker of modified generalized Chaplygin gas. We also demonstrate the proper calculation of second metric variation of $\mathcal{L}_{\rm m}$, as well as in models that contain scalars like $g_{\mu\nu} T^{\mu\nu}\,,R_{\mu\nu}T^{\mu\nu}$ and $G_{\mu\nu} T^{\mu\nu}$., Comment: 16 pages, no figures and tables

We confront Yukawa modified cosmology, proposed in arXiv:2304.11492 [Jusufi et al. arXiv:2304.11492], with data from Supernovae Type Ia (SNe Ia) and Hubble parameter (OHD) observations. Yukawa cosmology is obtained from a Yukawa-like gravitational potential, with coupling parameter $\alpha$ and wavelength parameter $\lambda$, which gives rise to modified Friedmann equations. We show that the agreement with observations is very efficient, and within $1\sigma$ confidence level we find the best-fit parameters $\lambda=\left(2693_{-1262}^{+1191}\right)\, \rm Mpc$, $\alpha=0.416_{-0.326}^{+1.137}$, and a graviton mass of $m_{g}=\left(2.374_{-0.728}^{+2.095}\right)\times 10^{-42}\, \text{GeV}$. Additionally, we establish a connection between the effective dark matter and dark energy density parameters and the angular radius of the black hole shadow of the SgrA and M87 black holes in the low-redshift limit, consistent with the Event Horizon Telescope findings., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. The large value of non-minimal coupling constant $\xi$ required to satisfy CMB observations in Higgs inflation violates unitarity. In this work we study Higgs-inflation with non-canonical kinetic term of DBI form to find whether $\xi$ can be reduced. To study the inflationary dynamics, we transform the action to the Einstein frame, in which the Higgs is minimally coupled to gravity with a non-canonical kinetic term and modified potential. We choose the Higgs self coupling constant $\lambda=0.14$ for our analysis. We find that the value of $\xi$ can be reduced from $10^{3}-10^{4}$ to $\mathcal{O}(10)$ to satisfy Planck constraints on amplitude of scalar power spectrum. However, this model produces a larger tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$, in comparison to the Higgs inflation with canonical kinetic term. We also find that, to satisfy joint constraints on scalar spectral index $n_s$ and tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ from Planck-2018 and bounds on $r$ from Planck and BICEP3, the value of $\xi$ should be of the order of $10^4$., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

We constrain the growth index $\gamma$ by performing a full-shape analysis of the power spectrum multipoles measured from the BOSS DR12 data. We adopt a theoretical model based on the Effective Field theory of the Large Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) and focus on two different cosmologies: $\gamma$CDM and $\gamma \nu$CDM, where we also vary the total neutrino mass. We explore different choices for the priors on the primordial amplitude $A_s$ and spectral index $n_s$, finding that informative priors are necessary to alleviate degeneracies between the parameters and avoid strong projection effects in the posterior distributions. Our tightest constraints are obtained with 3$\sigma$ Planck priors on $A_s$ and $n_s$: we obtain $\gamma = 0.647 \pm 0.085$ for $\gamma$CDM and $\gamma = 0.612^{+0.075}_{-0.090}$, $M_\nu < 0.30$ for $\gamma \nu$CDM at 68\% c.l., in both cases $\sim 1\sigma$ consistent with the $\Lambda$CDM prediction $\gamma \simeq 0.55$. Additionally, we produce forecasts for a Stage-IV spectroscopic galaxy survey, focusing on a DESI-like sample. We fit synthetic data-vectors for three different galaxy samples generated at three different redshift bins, both individually and jointly. Focusing on the constraining power of the Large Scale Structure alone, we find that forthcoming data can give an improvement of up to $\sim 85\%$ in the measurement of $\gamma$ with respect to the BOSS dataset when no CMB priors are imposed. On the other hand, we find the neutrino mass constraints to be only marginally better than the current ones, with future data able to put an upper limit of $M_\nu < 0.27~{\rm eV}$. This result can be improved with the inclusion of Planck priors on the primordial parameters, which yield $M_\nu < 0.18~{\rm eV}$., Comment: 38 pages, 15 figures. Prepared for submission to JCAP. We consider the classical attractor regime of the spectator Abelian Higgs model in power-law inflation, and compute the one-loop corrections to its evolution. For computations we utilize dimensional regularization and the propagators in the unitary gauge. The corrections to both the scalar condensate and the energy-momentum tensor exhibit secular ultraviolet contributions, that tend to slow down the rolling of the scalar down its potential, and drive it away from the classical attractor. These corrections need not be suppressed if the U(1) charge is much larger than the scalar self-coupling, which is seen already in flat space. In addition, at late times the secular corrections necessarily invalidate the perturbative loop expansion. We find the late time secular corrections to be captured by the renormalization group, which opens up the possibility to resum them past the breakdown of perturbativity., Comment: 41 pages, 4 figures

A dynamical system analysis is performed for a model of dissipative quintessential inflation realizing warm inflation at early primordial times and dissipative interations in the dark sector at late times. The construction makes use of a generalized exponential potential realizing both phases of accelerated expansion. A focus is given on the behavior of the dynamical system at late times and the analysis is exemplified by both analytical and numerical results. Here, we study the generalized second law (GSL) of thermodynamics in the framework of massive gravity. To do this, we consider a FRW universe filled only with matter and enclosed by the apparent horizon. In addition, we consider two models including generalized massive gravity (GMG) as well as dRGT massive gravity on de Sitter. For both models, we first study the dynamics of background cosmology and then explore the validity of GSL. Modified theories of gravity encompass a class of $f(R)$-models that seek to elucidate the observed late time accelerated expansion of the universe. In this study, we examine a set of viable $f(R)$ models (Hu-Sawicki: two cases, Satrobinsky, Tsujikawa, exponential and arcTanh models) in metric formalism, using recent cosmological data sets: type Ia supernovae data, cosmic chronometer observations, baryonic acoustic oscillations data, data from H\textsc{ii} starburst galaxies, and local measurements of the Hubble parameter $H_0$. The model parameters are constrained using a Bayesian analysis with the Monte Carlo Markov Chain method. We employ statistical tools such as the Akaike Information Criterion, Bayesian Information Criterion, and reduced chi-square statistics to conduct a comparative investigation of these models. We determine the transition redshift, the evolution of total equation-of-state (EoS) parameter, and the EoS for the component responsible for current accelerated expansion to characterize the expansion's evolution. Taking into account the ``Hubble tension," we perform the study with and without a Gaussian prior for $H_0$ from local measurements. Our findings are as follows: (i) in many cases the $f(R)$ models are strongly favored over the standard $\Lambda$CDM model, (ii) the deviation parameter ($b$) significantly deviates from zero in several cases, (iii) the inclusion of local $H_0$ not only increases the fitted value of $H_0$ (as expected) but also affects the gap between predictions of $f(R)$ models and the $\Lambda$CDM model, and (iv) the relevant quantities characterizing the (accelerated) expansion of the universe obtained in our models are consistent with those obtained in a model-independent way by others. Our investigation and results present a compelling case for pursuing further research on $f(R)$ models with future observations to come.

The accurate modelling of the Point Spread Function (PSF) is of paramount importance in astronomical observations, as it allows for the correction of distortions and blurring caused by the telescope and atmosphere. PSF modelling is crucial for accurately measuring celestial objects' properties. The last decades brought us a steady increase in the power and complexity of astronomical telescopes and instruments. Upcoming galaxy surveys like Euclid and LSST will observe an unprecedented amount and quality of data. Modelling the PSF for these new facilities and surveys requires novel modelling techniques that can cope with the ever-tightening error requirements. The purpose of this review is three-fold. First, we introduce the optical background required for a more physically-motivated PSF modelling and propose an observational model that can be reused for future developments. Second, we provide an overview of the different physical contributors of the PSF, including the optic- and detector-level contributors and the atmosphere. We expect that the overview will help better understand the modelled effects. Third, we discuss the different methods for PSF modelling from the parametric and non-parametric families for ground- and space-based telescopes, with their advantages and limitations. Validation methods for PSF models are then addressed, with several metrics related to weak lensing studies discussed in detail. Several Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) collaborations have recently provided strong evidence for a nHz Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background (SGWB). Here we investigate the implications of a first-order phase transition occurring within the early universe's dark quantum chromodynamics (dQCD) epoch, specifically within the framework of the mirror twin Higgs dark sector model. Our analysis indicates a distinguishable SGWB signal originating from this phase transition, which can explain the measurements obtained by PTAs. Remarkably, a significant portion of the parameter space for the SGWB signal also effectively resolves the existing tensions in both the $H_0$ and $S_8$ measurements in Cosmology. This intriguing correlation suggests a possible common origin of these three phenomena for $0.2 < \Delta N_{\rm eff} < 0.5$, where the mirror dark matter component constitutes about $30\%$ of the total dark matter abundance. We consider a model-independent approach to constrain the equivalence redshift, $z_{eq}$, at which dark energy and the total matter (cold dark matter and baryonic) equate their magnitudes. To this aim, in the context of a homogeneous and isotropic universe, we first consider a generic model where the dark energy contribution is provided by an unknown function of barotropic fluids. Afterwards, we compute the deceleration and jerk parameters, evaluating at our epoch, namely $z=0$, and at $z=z_{eq}$. Thus, by Taylor expanding around current time the Hubble rate, luminosity and angular distances, we substitute the theoretical expressions obtained from the aforementioned generic dark energy model, defining a correspondence between quantities evaluated at $z=0$ and $z=z_{eq}$. In so doing, we directly fit these quantities by means of current data sets, involving the most recent Pantheon type Ia supernovae, baryonic acoustic oscillation and Hubble rate points. We consider two hierarchies in our fitting procedures and compare our findings in the spatially-flat universe first and including spatial curvature, later. We assess constraints on the overall equation of state of the universe and its first derivative. We compare our results with those predicted by the standard $\Lambda$CDM paradigm. Specifically, our findings are in agreement at the 2$\sigma$ confidence level, assuming a constant dark energy term. However, our analysis does not rule out the possibility of a slight evolution of dark energy, indicating a small deviation from the scenario of a pure cosmological constant. In this paper we explore how different regularization prescriptions affect the counterterms in the renormalization of the galaxy bias expansion. We work in the context of primordial local non-Gaussianity including non-linear gravitational evolution. We carry out the one-loop renormalization of the field $\delta_\rho^2$ (i.e. the square of the matter overdensity field) up to third order in gravitational evolution. Three regularization schemes are considered and their impact on the values of the counterterms is studied.
