Abstract: Background: Open abdomen (OA) is a surgical option that can be used in patients with severe peritonitis. Few evidences exist to recommend the use of intraperitoneal fluid instillation associated with OA in managing septic abdomen. Materials and methods: A prospective analysis of adult patients enrolled in the International Register of Open Abdomen (trial registration: NCT02382770) was performed. Results: A total of 387 patients were enrolled in two groups: 84 with peritoneal fluid instillation (FI) and 303 without (NFI). The groups were homogeneous for baseline characteristics. Overall complications were 92.9% in FI and 86.3% in NFI (p = 0.106). Complications during OA were 72.6% in FI and 59.9% in NFI (p = 0.034). Complications after definitive closure were 70.8% in FI and 61.1% in NFI (p = 0.133). Entero-atmospheric fistula was 13.1% in FI and 12% in NFI (p = 0.828). Fascial closure was 78.6% in FI and 63.7% in NFI (p = 0.02). Analysis of FI in negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) showed: Overall morbidity in NPWT was 94% and in non-NPWT 91.2% (p = 0.622) and morbidity during OA was 68% and 79.4% (p = 0.25), respectively. Definitive fascial closure in NPWT was 87.8% and 96.8% in non-NPWT (p = 0.173). Overall mortality was 40% in NPWT and 29.4% in non-NPWT (p = 0.32) and morality during OA period was 18% and 8.8% (p = 0.238), respectively. Conclusion: We found intraperitoneal fluid instillation during open abdomen in peritonitic patients to increase the complication rate during the open abdomen period, with no impact on mortality, entero-atmospheric fistula rate and opening time. Fascial closure rate is increased by instillation. Fluid instillation is feasible even when associated with nonnegative pressure temporary abdominal closure techniques.

Abstract: Background: Analyzing the data of the International Register of Open Abdomen (IROA), the feasibility of open abdomen treatment has been demonstrated at every age. This new analysis on the IROA database investigates the risk factors for mortality in elderly patients treated with open abdomen for intra-abdominal infection. Methods: Data were derived from the IROA, a prospective observational international cohort study that enrolled patients treated with open abdomen worldwide. A univariate analysis of potential risk factors was performed. Inclusion criteria were patients older than 65 years and treated with open abdomen for intra-abdominal infection. End point was overall mortality, calculated within 30 days after open abdomen management, after 1-month and 1-year follow-up. Results: A total of 116 patients was analyzed with mean age of 76 ± 7 years. Definitive closure was achieved in 93 patients (93/116, 80.2%) for a mean open abdomen duration of 5.0 ± 5.0 days. Complicated patients were 101 (101/116, 87.1%) for a total of 201 complications. Overall, 62 out of 116 patients (53.4%) died: 23 patients (23/62, 37.1%) during open abdomen management, 29 patients (46.8%) within 30 days after abdominal closure, 9 patients (14.5%) after 1-month follow-up, and 1 patient (1.6%) after 1-year follow-up. Age did not affect mortality (75 ± 6 years in alive patients versus 77 ± 7 years in dead patients, p = 0.773). Definitive abdominal closure was the most important factor to prevent mortality. Conclusions: This study confirmed that age alone cannot be considered a determinant for death, even in elderly patients managed with open abdomen for severe intra-abdominal infection.

Abstract: Aims: This international study aimed to assess: 1) the prevalence of preoperative and postoperative COVID-19 among patients with hip fracture, 2) the effect on 30-day mortality, and 3) clinical factors associated with the infection and with mortality in COVID-19-positive patients. Methods: A multicentre collaboration among 112 centres in 14 countries collected data on all patients presenting with a hip fracture between 1st March-31st May 2020. Demographics, residence, place of injury, presentation blood tests, Nottingham Hip Fracture Score, time to surgery, management, ASA grade, length of stay, COVID-19 and 30-day mortality status were recorded. Results: A total of 7090 patients were included, with a mean age of 82.2 (range 50–104) years and 4959 (69.9%) being female. Of 651 (9.2%) patients diagnosed with COVID-19, 225 (34.6%) were positive at presentation and 426 (65.4%) were positive postoperatively. Positive COVID-19 status was independently associated with male sex (odds ratio (OR) 1.38, p = 0.001), residential care (OR 2.15, p < 0.001), inpatient fall (OR 2.23, p = 0.003), cancer (OR 0.63, p = 0.009), ASA grades 4 (OR 1.59, p = 0.008) or 5 (OR 8.28, p < 0.001), and longer admission (OR 1.06 for each increasing day, p < 0.001). Patients with COVID-19 at any time had a significantly lower chance of 30-day survival versus those without COVID-19 (72.7% versus 92.6%, p < 0.001). COVID-19 was independently associated with an increased 30-day mortality risk (hazard ratio (HR) 2.83, p < 0.001). Increasing age (HR 1.03, p = 0.028), male sex (HR 2.35, p < 0.001), renal disease (HR 1.53, p = 0.017), and pulmonary disease (HR 1.45, p = 0.039) were independently associated with a higher 30-day mortality risk in patients with COVID-19 when adjusting for confounders. Conclusion: The prevalence of COVID-19 in hip fracture patients during the first wave of the pandemic was 9%, and was independently associated with a three-fold increased 30-day mortality risk.

Abstract: Introduction: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the gold-standard approach for cholecystectomy, has surprisingly variable outcomes and conversion rates. Only recently has operative grading been reported to define disease severity and few have been validated. This multicentre, multinational study assessed an operative scoring system to assess its ability to predict the need for conversion from laparoscopic to open cholecystectomy. Methods: A prospective, web-based, ethically approved study was established by WSES with a 10-point gallbladder operative scoring system; enrolling patients undergoing elective or emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy between January 2016 and December 2017. Gallbladder surgery was considered easy if the G10 score < 2, moderate (2 ≦ 4), difficult (5 ≦ 7) and extreme (8 ≦ 10). Demographics about the patients, surgeons and operative procedures, use of cholangiography and conversion rates were recorded. Results: Five hundred four patients, mean age 53.5 (range 18-89), were enrolled by 55 surgeons in 16 countries. Surgery was performed by consultants in 70% and was elective in (56%) with a mean operative time of 78.7 min (range 15-400). The mean G10 score was 3.21, with 22% deemed to have difficult or extreme surgical gallbladders, and 71/504 patients were converted. The G10 score was 2.98 in those completed laparoscopically and 4.65 in the 71/504 (14%) converted. (p < 0.0001; AUC 0.772 (CI 0.719-0.825). The optimal cut-off point of 0.067 (score of 3) was identified in G10 vs conversion to open cholecystectomy. Conversion occurred in 33% of patients with G10 scores of ≥ 5. The four variables statistically predictive of conversion were GB appearance - completely buried GB, impacted stone, bile or pus outside GB and fistula. Conclusion: The G10 operative scores provide simple grading of operative cholecystectomy and are predictive of the need to convert to open cholecystectomy. Abstract: Background: Timing and adequacy of peritoneal source control are the most important pillars in the management of patients with acute peritonitis. Therefore, early prognostic evaluation of acute peritonitis is paramount to assess the severity and establish a prompt and appropriate treatment. The objectives of this study were to identify clinical and laboratory predictors for in-hospital mortality in patients with acute peritonitis and to develop a warning score system, based on easily recognizable and assessable variables, globally accepted. Methods: This worldwide multicentre observational study included 153 surgical departments across 56 countries over a 4-month study period between February 1, 2018, and May 31, 2018. Results: A total of 3137 patients were included, with 1815 (57.9%) men and 1322 (42.1%) women, with a median age of 47 years (interquartile range [IQR] 28-66). The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 8.9%, with a median length of stay of 6 days (IQR 4-10). Using multivariable logistic regression, independent variables associated with in-hospital mortality were identified: age > 80 years, malignancy, severe cardiovascular disease, severe chronic kidney disease, respiratory rate ≥ 22 breaths/min, systolic blood pressure < 100 mmHg, AVPU responsiveness scale (voice and unresponsive), blood oxygen saturation level (SpO2) < 90% in air, platelet count < 50,000 cells/mm3, and lactate > 4 mmol/l. These variables were used to create the PIPAS Severity Score, a bedside early warning score for patients with acute peritonitis. The overall mortality was 2.9% for patients who had scores of 0-1, 22.7% for those who had scores of 2-3, 46.8% for those who had scores of 4-5, and 86.7% for those who have scores of 7-8. Conclusions: The simple PIPAS Severity Score can be used on a global level and can help clinicians to identify patients at high risk for treatment failure and mortality.

8. FBXO28 causes developmental and epileptic encephalopathy with profound intellectual disability

Abstract: Chromosome 1q41-q42 deletion syndrome is a rare cause of intellectual disability, seizures, dysmorphology, and multiple anomalies. Two genes in the 1q41-q42 microdeletion, WDR26 and FBXO28, have been implicated in monogenic disease. Patients with WDR26 encephalopathy overlap clinically with those with 1q41-q42 deletion syndrome, whereas only one patient with FBXO28 encephalopathy has been described. Seizures are a prominent feature of 1q41-q42 deletion syndrome; therefore, we hypothesized that pathogenic FBXO28 variants cause developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs). We describe nine new patients with FBXO28 pathogenic variants (four missense, including one recurrent, three nonsense, and one frameshift) and analyze all 10 known cases to delineate the phenotypic spectrum. All patients had epilepsy and 9 of 10 had DEE, including infantile spasms (3) and a progressive myoclonic epilepsy (1). Median age at seizure onset was 22.5 months (range 8 months to 5 years). Nine of 10 patients had intellectual disability, which was profound in six of nine and severe in three of nine. Movement disorders occurred in eight of 10 patients, six of 10 had hypotonia, four of 10 had acquired microcephaly, and five of 10 had dysmorphic features, albeit different to those typically seen in 1q41-q42 deletion syndrome and WDR26 encephalopathy. We distinguish FBXO28 encephalopathy from both of these disorders with more severe intellectual impairment, drug-resistant epilepsy, and hyperkinetic movement disorders.

Using panel data the researcher observes the same unit of analysis over time. The main advantage is that if researchers observe then same units over time, they can control for unobserved characteristics that while unknown, can be understood not to have much variation over time. In the recent years, data with precise geographical information is allowing researchers to merge previously unrelated datasets using geographical location. The data limitations of the past are being tackled by the development of methods addressing the unknown, and new data availability—and computing power—that allows us to enrich our data by merging it with data coming from all types of sources. The first chapter of this thesis uses panel data where the unit of analysis is a 2 mile by 2 mile square observed over two years to study forced displacement as a response to conflict in Iraq. Chapter 2 uses the exact geographical location of households in Rwanda, conflict during the 1994 genocide, and other geographical features to document the prevalence of wartime rape during the genocide in HIV levels a decade later. Chapter 3 uses a panel of schools in Spain to assess the impact of a bilingual education system on student learning outcomes. Chapter 1 studies how internally displaced persons reacted as a response to violent conflict in Iraq during the war against ISIL between 2014 and 2017. Abstract: Background: Open abdomen is the cornerstone of damage control strategies in acute care and trauma surgery. The role of BMI has not been well investigated. The aim of the study was to assess the role of BMI in determining outcomes after open abdomen. Methods: This is an analysis of patients recorded into the International Register of Open Abdomen; patients were classified in two groups according to BMI using a cutoff of 30 kg/m2. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality; secondary outcomes were primary fascia closure rate, length of treatment, complication rate, entero-atmospheric fistula rate and length of ICU stay. Results: A total of 591 patients were enrolled from 57 centers, and obese patients were 127 (21.5%). There was no difference in mortality between the two groups; complications developed during the open treatment were higher in obese patients (63.8% vs. 53.4%, p = 0.038) while post-closure complications rate was similar. Obese patients had a significantly longer duration of the open treatment (9.1 ± 11.5 days vs. 6.3 ± 7.5 days; p = 0,002) and lower primary fascia closure rate (75.5% vs. 89.5%; p < 0,001). No differences in fistula rate were found. There was a linear correlation between the duration of open abdomen and the BMI (Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient = 0,201; p < 0,001). Conclusions: Open abdomen in obese patients seems to be safe as in non-obese patients with similar mortality; however, in obese patients the length of open abdomen is significantly higher with higher complication rate, longer ICU length of stay and lower primary fascia closure rate. Abstract: Background: No definitive data about open abdomen (OA) epidemiology and outcomes exist. The World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) and the Panamerican Trauma Society (PTS) promoted the International Register of Open Abdomen (IROA). Methods: A prospective observational cohort study including patients with an OA treatment. Data were recorded on a web platform (Clinical Registers®) through a dedicated website: www.clinicalregisters.org. Results: Four hundred two patients enrolled. Adult patients: 369 patients; Mean age: 57.39±18.37; 56% male; Mean BMI: 36±5.6. OA indication: Peritonitis (48.7%), Trauma (20.5%), Vascular Emergencies/Hemorrhage (9.4%), Ischemia (9.1%), Pancreatitis (4.2%),Post-operative abdominal-compartment-syndrome (3.9%), Others (4.2%). The most adopted Temporary-abdominal-closure systems were the commercial negative pressure ones (44.2%). During OA 38% of patients had complications; among them 10.5% had fistula. Definitive closure: 82.8%; Mortality during treatment: 17.2%. Mean duration of OA: 5.39(±4.83) days; Mean number of dressing changes: 0.88(±0.88). After-closure complications: (49.5%) and Mortality: (9%). No significant associations among TACT, indications, mortality, complications and fistula. A linear correlationexists between days of OA and complications (Pearson linear correlation = 0.326 p<0.0001) and with the fistula development (Pearson = 0.146 p= 0.016). Pediatric patients: 33 patients. Mean age: 5.91±(3.68) years; 60% male. Mortality: 3.4%; Complications: 44.8%; Fistula: 3.4%. Mean duration of OA: 3.22(±3.09) days. Conclusion: Temporary abdominal closure is reliable and safe. The different techniques account for different results according to the different indications. In peritonitis commercial negative pressure temporary closure seems to improve results. In trauma skin-closure and Bogotà-bag seem to improve results. Abstract: Technology plays a vital role in 21st-century education. The effective use of technology in education has changed the face of education and it has created more educational opportunities. One of the techniques for improving the students in meeting the academic needs and helping them develop English Language skills by providing multimedia during the teaching and learning in the classroom. Multimedia classroom provides the student's chances for interacting with diverse texts that give them a solid background in the tasks and content of mainstream college courses. The study aims to find out some advantages of the use of multimedia in the classroom. This study uses the descriptive method of research design to gather information about The Use of Multimedia in Teaching Grade 12 at Bestlink College of the Philippines: Its Effect to Academic Performance. Descriptive research is used to describe the characteristics of a population or phenomenon being studied. Twenty (20) English Teachers were used as respondents using a survey questionnaire as the main tool in gathering data. These data were interpreted using frequency, ranking, and weighted mean. The respondents are female with ages ranging from 26 –35 years, single, and Bachelor degree holders. They used multimedia as a tool in teachings like laptops, cellphones, and projectors. These improved the academic performance of the respondents by increasing their interest and curiosity in the subject as compared to the traditional lecture method. However, problems on power interruption, no network connections, and the absence of projectors arose from the findings. These problems are relayed to the administration for solutions. This study demonstrated the benefits of using Multimedia tools in teaching grade 12 students. It can help the performance of the students by doing their tasks easily, presenting creative projects, ideas or presentations. Moreso, teachers can easily execute the lesson using laptops or computers. Problems can

Abstract: Introduction: No definitive data describing associations between cases of Open Abdomen (OA) and Entero-atmospheric fistulae (EAF) exist. The World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) and the Panamerican Trauma Society (PTS) thus analyzed the International Register of Open Abdomen (IROA) to assess this question. Material and methods: A prospective analysis of adult patients enrolled in the IROA. Results: Among 649 adult patients with OA 58 (8.9%) developed EAF. Indications for OA were peritonitis (51.2%) and traumatic-injury (16.8%). The most frequently utilized temporary abdominal closure techniques were Commercial-NPWT (46.8%) and Bogotà-bag (21.9%). Mean OA days were 7.9 ± 18.22. Overall mortality rate was 29.7%, with EAF having no impact on mortality. Multivariate analysis associated cancer (p = 0.018), days of OA (p = 0.003) and time to provision-of-nutrition (p = 0.016) with EAF occurrence. Conclusion: Entero-atmospheric fistulas are influenced by the duration of open abdomen treatment and by the nutritional status of the patient. Peritonitis, intestinal anastomosis, negative pressure and oral or enteral nutrition were not risk factors for EAF during OA treatment

Abstract: Among the main health problems for sheep production are gastrointestinal parasites, of which the most important nematode is Haemonchus contortus. Current control strategies focus on the effectiveness, along with the low impact on the ecosystem. The study of the integral control of parasites allows the investigation of alternatives with probable anthelmintic effect, such as the use of papaya (Carica papaya) seeds. This study aimed at evaluating the in vitro effect of hydroalcoholic and ethanolic extracts of papaya seeds on eggs and larvae of H. contortus. The study was carried out with the equipment and facilities of Laboratory 3 of the Multidisciplinary Research Unit at the Facultad de Estudios Superiores Cuautitlán, UNAM. The extracts were prepared through maceration in solvent. A sheep was inoculated with 5000 L3 of H. contortus, a strain isolated and maintained in the facilities. Fecal samples were collected, and eggs were recovered for the hatch inhibition assay. The eggs and L3 were pretreated with hydroalcoholic and ethanolic extract of papaya seed (2.5 mg/ml), distilled water, ethanol 90 %, and levamisole (7.5 mg/ml). The abomasal explants technique was used to evaluate the effect of the extracts on L3 and its association to the abomasal mucosa. An ANOVA was performed for repeated samples using the Statgraphics program. The ethanolic extract of the papaya seed inhibited 92 % of hatching, and the hydroalcoholic extract 50 % (p <0.05). In the case of the explants, the ethanolic extract showed 10 % of the larvae not associated with the abomasal tissue, followed by the hydroalcoholic extract with 60 % of non-associated larvae (p<0.05). In conclusion, the ethanolic extract has an effect on eggs, while the hydroalcoholic extract inhibits the association to the abomasal tissue., Entre los principales problemas sanitarios para la producción ovina están los parásitos gastroentéricos; de ellos, el más importante es Haemonchus contortus. 19. Immune and haematological parameters of Blackbelly ewes infected with gastrointestinal nematodes

Abstract: Background: It is necessary to identify phenotypic traits related to natural resistance against gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in order to know the host immunity status in productive ewes. Objetive: To determine haematological and immunological parameters (IgA and IgG) during pregnancy and lactation in Blackbelly ewes naturally infected with GIN Methods: The number of eggs per gram (EPG), packed cell volume (% PCV), plasmatic protein (PP), and peripheral eosinophils were determined during eight months. In addition, sera and saliva samples were collected to establish IgG and IgA kinetics by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: The results showed 2,592 ± 2,403 EPG and 22.2 ± 4.0% PCV during lactation and 595 ± 901 EPG and 25.1 ± 2.5% PCV during pregnancy. A higher percentage of Trichostrongylus colubriformis larvae were observed in pregnancy (84 to100%) than in lactation (36 to 44%). The IgA activity in serum samples showed a marked reduction (from 80 to 10%) during lambing for both Haemonchus contortus and T. colubriformis antigens. In saliva samples, IgA activity with regard to the standard decreased from 56% at 60 days to 30% at 45 days before lambing and remained low for 45 days during lactation (23 to 32% activity). The eosinophils numbers were 2.0 x 109 cells L-1 in pregnancy and remained low at 0.7 x 109 cells L-1 in lactation. 22. Immune and haematological parameters of Blackbelly ewes infected with gastrointestinal nematodes

Abstract: Background: It is necessary to identify phenotypic traits related to natural resistance against gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in order to know the host immunity status in productive ewes. Objetive: To determine haematological and immunological parameters (IgA and IgG) during pregnancy and lactation in Blackbelly ewes naturally infected with GIN Methods: The number of eggs per gram (EPG), packed cell volume (% PCV), plasmatic protein (PP), and peripheral eosinophils were determined during eight months. In addition, sera and saliva samples were collected to establish IgG and IgA kinetics by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: The results showed 2,592 ± 2,403 EPG and 22.2 ± 4.0% PCV during lactation and 595 ± 901 EPG and 25.1 ± 2.5% PCV during pregnancy. A higher percentage of Trichostrongylus colubriformis larvae were observed in pregnancy (84 to100%) than in lactation (36 to 44%). The IgA activity in serum samples showed a marked reduction (from 80 to 10%) during lambing for both Haemonchus contortus and T. colubriformis antigens. In saliva samples, IgA activity with regard to the standard decreased from 56% at 60 days to 30% at 45 days before lambing and remained low for 45 days during lactation (23 to 32% activity). The eosinophils numbers were 2.0 x 109 cells L-1 in pregnancy and remained low at 0.7 x 109 cells L-1 in lactation. Abstract: El nuevo enfoque de control integrado de parásitos obliga a buscar alternativas que consideren el medioambiente, es decir, sostenibles y sustentables. El objetivo de este trabajo fue fraccionar el extracto etanólico de la planta Artemisia cina, obtener artemisininas y conocer el efecto de estas sobre la capacidad de asociación de las L3 de Haemonchus contortus en explantes abomasales. El extracto etanólico se fraccionó por medio de la metodología establecida para Artemisia japónica, y se identificaron las artemisininas por medio de cromatografía en capa fina, teniendo como referencia artemisininas comerciales. Las artemisininas se utilizaron sobre L3 desenvainada, se realizó la técnica de explantes abomasales por triplicado y se compararon así: levamisol (7.5 mg/ml), artemisinina comercial (1 mg/ml), agua y seis diferentes fracciones de A. cina a dosis de 1 mg/ml: Ac3k, Ac3b, Ac3a, Ac3h, Ac3i, Ac4b. No se obtuvieron diferencias significativas entre las fracciones de A. cina y artemisinina comercial (p>0.05). Se concluye que no existió efecto de las artemisininas obtenidas del extracto etanólico de A. cina sobre la capacidad de asociación de las L3 de H. contortus al tejido abomasal. Es importante continuar con más estudios de la artemisinina para determinar sobre qué fase del parásito afecta su viabilidad.

Abstract: We construct and estimate a unified model combining three of the main sources of cross-country income disparities: differences in factor endowments, barriers to technology adoption and the inappropriateness of frontier technologies to local conditions. The key components are different types of workers, distortions to capital accumulation, directed technical change, costly adoption and spillovers from the world technology frontier. Despite its parsimonious parametrization, our empirical model provides a good fit of GDP data for up to 86 countries in 1970 and 122 countries in 2000. Removing barriers to technology adoption would increase the output per worker of the average non-OECD country relative to the US from 0.19 to 0.61, while increasing skill premia in all countries. Removing barriers to trade in goods amplifies income disparities, induces skill-biased technology adoption and increases skill premia in the majority of countries. These results are reverted if trade liberalization is coupled with international IPR protection.

Abstract: Nanoemulsions of water, Brij 56 and hexyl methacrylate (with a small amount of squalene as hydrophobe or costabilizer) were made by the phase inversion temperature (PIT) method and then polymerized. In the absence of squalene, the nanoemulsions destabilized within minutes; however with squalene, the nanoemulsions were kinetically stable for at least several hours, which is long enough to carry out the reactions, with diameters of narrow size distribution in the range from 32 to 44 nm, depending on the surfactant concentration. Polymerizations, carried out a 20°C using a par redox, were extremely fast (ca. 100% conversion in less than 5 min) yielding polymer particles of ca. 40 nm, which were similar to the original nanoemulsion droplets (ca. 35 nm), indicating that the nanoemulsion droplets act as templates, and that squalene diminishes substantially monomer diffusion between reacting and nonreacting monomer droplets. Molar masses were high and alike to those produced by microemulsion polymerization of this monomer, suggesting that chain transfer to monomer is the main termination mechanism.

Abstract: The synthesis of poly(hexyl methacrylate) nanoparticles in nanoemulsions containing squalane as hydrophobe is reported here. A comparison of the polymerization kinetics of nanoemulsions prepared by Phase Inversion Temperature (low energy method) and microfluidization (high energy method), as well as polymer characteristics are presented. Nanoemulsion polymerizations carried out a 20°C were extremely fast using a par redox especially for the low-energy nanoemulsions. The particles obtained were only slightly larger than the original nanoemulsion droplets, indicating that the droplets acted as templates, and that squalane diminished substantially monomer diffusion between reacting and non-reacting monomer droplets. Molar masses and glass transition temperatures of the poly(hexyl methacrylate) obtained here were practically independent of conversion and surfactant concentration, as well as of the nanoemulsification method used.

Abstract: New technologies do not diffuse instantaneously, and adoption lags are considered a major determinant of productivity differences across firms and nations. In a classic paper, Griliches (1957) documented that new, more-productive seeds of hybrid corn diffused slowly across U.S. agricultural regions, with a 15-year lag between adoption in Iowa and Alabama, and that their diffusion was affected by local conditions such as geography and market potential. The spread of more recent technologies follows a similar pattern. Kiessling (2009) reported evidence of slow adoption of information and communication-technology diffusion both between and within countries. For instance, although personal computers became available in the early 1980s, in 2006, the percentage of the population using computers was 80.6 percent in the United States, 36.3 percent in Spain, 5.6 percent in China, and 2.7 percent in India. Cross-country studies confirm that technology adoption depends on both country-specific factors and characteristics of new technologies. For example, a McKinsey (2001) report on India identified as a major source of inefficiency the fact that firms are too small to benefit from the best technologies and that these may require skills that the country does not possess. The importance of local economic conditions also was stressed by Caselli and Wilson (2004), who showed that countries import technologies complementing their abundant factors; and by Ciccone and Papaioannou (2009), who found that human capital fosters the adoption of skill-augmenting technologies. At the aggregate level, there is evidence that differences in technology are a key determinant of cross-country income disparities.

Abstract: La etapa de precongelación es un importante paso en el proceso de manufactura de helados y sorbetes dado que las condiciones de operación tienen una fuerte influencia sobre la microestructura y por consecuencia sobre los atributos sensoriales del producto final. Esta etapa de precongelación es llevada a cabo en un intercambiador de calor de superficie raspada donde la calidad del producto es fuertemente influenciada por las condiciones de operación tales como la temperatura de evaporación de un refrigerante, el gasto másico de la alimentación, la velocidad del raspador y una presión provocada por la introducción de aire. Con la finalidad de estudiar la pertinencia de un sistema de control basado en la influencia de las variables del proceso sobre la calidad del producto, este trabajo presenta un modelo para una cristalización continua de un sorbete utilizando la metodología de momentos, el cual es validado con datos experimentales. El modelo realizado por esta metodología de momentos es capaz de representar la influencia de las condiciones de operación durante la cristalización de sorbete sobre las características finales del producto tales como el tamaño de cristal y la temperatura de salida del intercambiador de superficie raspada (ICSR) en ausencia de aire. El modelo basado en momentos se estudia, entonces, como la reducción del modelo de la ecuación de balance de población e incluye los fenómenos de nucleación heterogénea y crecimiento. De este modo, el modelo desarrollado representa requerimientos computacionales mínimos y está altamente adaptado para tareas de optimización y/o control del proceso., Freezing is an important step in the manufacturing process of ice-cream and sorbet, since the operating conditions have a strong influence on the micro-structure, and consequently on the sensorial attributes of the final product. This steep of freezing is carried out by a scraped surface heat exchanger (SSHE) where the product quality is conditioned by process conditions as the evaporation temperature of a refrigerant fluid, the mix flow rate, the dasher speed and the cylinder pressure due to the air introduction. In order to study the relevance of a control system based on the influence of process variables on product quality, this paper presents a model for a continuous crystallization of a sorbet using the method of moments, which is validated by experimental data.The model created by this methodology has been able to represent the influence of the process conditions during the crystallization of the sorbet on the final product characteristics such as crystal size and the draw temperature in the outlet of the SSHE in absence of air. The model based in moments is studied as a reduced model of the population balance equation and includes the phenomena of heterogeneous nucleation and growth. Abstract: The effect of surfactant (sodium dodecylsulfate) concentration on the semi continuous heterophase polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) is reported. Monomer starving conditions were achieved by adding semi continuously monomer at very low addition rates. These conditions were confirmed by the low amount of residual monomer throughout the reaction and by the fact that the instantaneous polymerization rate is similar to the monomer-dosing rate. Under these conditions polymer particles in the nanometer range were obtained with narrow size distribution (1.07 < Dw/Dn < 1.18). Final particle size increased from 23 to ca. 32 nm as the initial surfactant concentration decreased from 5 to 1 wt. %. Molecular masses are independent on surfactant concentration and they are much lower than those expected from termination by chain transfer to monomer, which is the typical termination mechanism in 0-1 emulsion and microemulsion polymerization of this monomer.

Abstract: The quality of ice-cream is at a large extent determined by the smooth texture and creamy mouth feel which are closely related to the crystal size and product viscosity. Model based computer aided process engineering may enable the design of optimal operation conditions so as to maximize ice-cream quality while minimizing, for example, energy consumption. In this regard, the development of predictive mathematical models describing the ice-cream crystallization process is object of intensive research. However, mathematical modelling is a time consuming task that involves several steps from the definition of the questions to be addressed to the development of a final model with satisfactory predictive capabilities. In this concern, model identification, plays a crucial role in model development since it involves structure characterisation, identifiability analysis, parameter estimation and experimental design. The objective of this work is to perform a complete study of the model identification for the ice-cream crystallization process. A simple yet accurate mathematical model relating the process inputs and outputs was derived, based on the method of moments. The AMIGO toolbox (Advanced Model Identification using global optimization) was used to iteratively identify model unknowns from experimental data obtained in the pilot plant located at CEMAGREF and to design new experiments to improve model predictive capabilities

Abstract: Este trabajo documenta algunas notas sobre el ciclo reproductivo del pectínido manchado Spathochlamys vestalis (Reeve, 1853), el cual se desconoce tanto para las costas del Pacífico como del Atlántico. En el Golfo de California es abundante sobre fondos de arena gruesa y entre las espinas de la concha china Spondylus leucacanthus. Es una especie hermafrodita funcional con la porción gonadal masculina separada de la porción gonadal femenina. Se observó alta proporción de individuos maduros durante diciembre de 1994 (87,5%) y en octubre de 1995 (100%). Los individuos desovados se observaron en baja proporción. Se encontró un 5,5% en enero, cuando la temperatura del agua de fondo fue menor de 15ºC y un 5,1% en abril, cuando la temperatura se incrementó a 21ºC. El patrón reproductivo ocurrió de manera continua sin presentar una alta correlación con la temperatura del agua de fondo. La abundancia del fitoplancton fue alta en primavera, si embargo presentó una relación negativa con el desarrollo y la madurez del pectínido (P<0,05).
