Necrotizing soft tissue infection caused by a large 70 mm fish bone that led to a single perforation of the rectum is an incredibly rare phenomenon. We report a case of an adult male in his 50s who presented with perianal pain. A prompt computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a foreign body had perforated through the rectum into the retrorectal space with associated gas locules, indicating a necrotizing infection. In addition, our case report explores the principles of wide exploration and debridement, the role of a defunctioning colostomy in perineal wound management, and principles of wound closure in the context of a foreign body causing significant perineal sepsis.

Large-surface area carbon materials have attracted a great deal of attention recently due to their promising applications in adsorption, energy storage, and catalysis. In this study, a green and sustainable wastewater treatment strategy, involving pre-adsorption of mesoporous carbon nanospheres (MCNS) with water contaminants and subsequent advanced oxidation of pre-adsorbed molecules and an additional water contaminant, is studied for the treatment of wastewater and regeneration of MCNS simultaneously. Here, MCNS were facilely synthesized, which demonstrated high efficiency in adsorptive removal of neutral, cationic, and anionic organic water contaminants. MCNS with pre-adsorbed contaminant molecules were found to be highly active catalysts for the peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-activated removal of phenol in wastewater. Meanwhile, the pre-adsorbed organic contaminants in MCNS were also removed by PMS, leading to a re-cleaned surface for subsequent adsorptive removal of the water contaminant. Various parameters in adsorption and catalytic degradation were studied to elucidate the performance of MCNS as well as the adsorption and degradation mechanism. The recyclability of MCNS for multiple adsorption-catalysis runs makes the process green, sustainable, and cost-effective without introducing any secondary contaminants.

Secondary Zn-air batteries (ZABs) are recognized as one of the most promising power sources for the future with lucrative features of low cost, high energy density, eco-friendliness, and high safety. However, the widespread implementation of ZABs is still hampered by the sluggish oxygen redox reactions. Thus the deployment of cost-effective and highly efficient air electrodes to substitute precious metals (Pt/Ir), is highly challenging, however, highly desired. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are emerging functional materials, which demonstrate several outstanding characteristics, such as high specific surface area, high conductivity, self-doped N, open pore structure, versatile compositions and favourable chemical stability. Through varying the metal/organic moiety or by employing different synthesis protocols, ZIFs with different properties could be obtained. Being adaptable, desired functionalities may be further incorporated into ZIFs through pre-treatment, in situ treatment, and post treatment. Thus, ZIFs are the ideal precursors for the preparation of variety of bi-functional air electrodes for ZABs by materials tuning, morphological control, or by materials hybridization. Here, the recent advances of ZIFs-based materials are critically surveyed from the perspective of synthesis, morphology, structure and properties, and correlated with performance indicators of ZABs. Finally, the major challenges and future prospects of ZIFs associated with ZABs are discussed.

Smart Meters (SMs) offer remote switching functionalities to the Distribution System Operators (DSOs). The DSO can switch the breaker of the SM of any customer remotely whenever needed. The DSOs are currently applying this technique for customers typically one by one when customers are changing their addresses or when contracts are terminated. The breaker functionalities of the SMs could be used for multiple customers, thereby opening up new possibilities to balance electricity consumption and production. How the technology has been functioning in practice has, however, not been fully investigated with regard to multiple SM switching. In this paper, the experience from real tests on simultaneous multiple SM switching is presented. The tests have been conducted to observe the effect of SM switching on power quality (PQ). Power Quality Meters (PQMs) had been used both at the substation as well as the customer level to measure the PQ during SM switching. Smart Meters (SMs) are undergoing an increasing deployment all over the world and have been introduced to several regions. The SMs generally have remotely accessible breakers which offer remote switching functionalities to the Distribution System Operators (DSOs). The DSOs have the possibility of using this unique functionality of SMs for various future applications, e.g., switching some loads during peak loads crisis or outage management during natural disasters. Under these conditions, the DSO can disconnect selected customers by using SM switching while continuing power supply to risk customers and emergency service providers. During multiple SM switching, the power quality (PQ) of the connected loads might be affected. This paper presents results on the impact of multiple SM switching at customer level. Data are used from a field test on multiple SM switching from a DSO in Sweden. The number of customers in this test was higher compared to the previous two tests of the work. Moreover, all customers in the selected test area were not switched in this test. Almost half of the customers in the test area were disconnected remotely using SMs while the other half of the customers remained connected with power supply to investigate the impact of SMs switching in a different way. This work observed some transient events during the SMs switching. Voltage quality was stable during the test except some flickering effects beyond the limit., QC 20160203
