1. Incidence of adverse reactions in HIV patients treated with protease inhibitors: A cohort study

Abstract

Objective: To assess the probability that protease inhibitor (PI) therapy might be discontinued because of adverse events (AE) and to evaluate the incidence rate of adverse reactions during PI treatment. Design: A prospective cohort, multicenter study on HIV-positive patients starting treatment with at least one PI. Setting: Ten departments of infectious diseases in Northern Italy. Patients: A total of 1207 patients who started PI therapy in September 1997 and were consecutively observed up to April 1999. Main Outcome Measures: Adverse reactions following initiation of PI therapy, and time to therapy discontinuation due to AE. Results: During the study period, 35.9% patients presented adverse reactions of any grade, whereas 9.7% presented at least one serious AE. After 12 months of treatment, the percentage of patients who had interrupted treatment was 36% of ritonavir- treated patients, 14.2% of those treated with indinavir, 13.6% of ritonavir- saquinavir hard gel capsules (HGC)-treated patients, and 8.5% and 2.1%, respectively, for those treated with nelfinavir and saquinavir HGC. Women and patients with hepatitis experienced a significantly greater number of adverse events compared with other categories. Gastrointestinal events were more frequently observed in patients treated with either ritonavir alone or in combination with saquinavir HGC, as well as in patients receiving nelfinavir, although in this group serious events were rare. Here again, neurologic, metabolic, and hepatic toxicity occurred more frequently in ritonavir and ritonavir-saquinavir HGC treated patients. Allergic reactions were more often observed in patients receiving nelfinavir. Indinavir-treated patients presented the highest incidence of renal toxicity. Conclusion: Ritonavir is the drug associated with the largest number of reactions, which appear during the first few months of treatment. Saquinavir HGC and nelfinavir are the best tolerated drugs in a clinical setting.

Abstract

The first observation of the decay B0sbar -> D0K∗0 using pp data collected by the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1), is reported. A signal of 34.4 +/- 6.8 events is obtained and the absence of signal is rejected with a statistical significance of more than nine standard deviations. The B0sbar -> D0K∗0 branching fraction is measured relative to that of B0sbar-> D0 rho0 : B(B0sbar -> D0K∗0) / B(B0sbar-> D0 rho0) = 1.48+/-0.34+/-0.15+/-0.12, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty on the ratio of the B-0 and B-s(0) hadronisation fractions. 3. A category of compositional domain-models for separable Stone spaces

Abstract

In this paper we introduce SFPM, a category of SFP domains which provides very satisfactory domain-models, i.e. partializations, of separable Stone spaces (2-Stone spaces). More specifically, SFPM is a subcategory of SFPep, closed under direct limits as well as many constructors, such as lifting, sum, product and Plotkin powerdomain. SFPM is structurally well behaved, in the sense that the functor MAX, which associates to each object of SFPM the Stone space of its maximal elements, is compositional with respect to the constructors above, and omega-continuous. A correspondence can be established between these constructors over SFPM and appropriate constructors on Stone spaces, whereby SFP domain-models of Stone spaces defined as solutions of a vast class of recursive equations in 2-Stone, can be obtained simply by solving the corresponding equations in SFPM. Moreover any continuous function between two 2-Stone spaces can be extended to a continuous function between any two SFPM domain-models of the original spaces. The category SFPM does not include all the SFP's with a 2-Stone space of maximal elements (CSFP's). We show that the CSFP's can be characterized precisely as suitable retracts of SFPM objects. Then the results proved for SFPM easily extends to the wider category having CSFP's as objects. Using SFPM , we explain two classical partializations of the space of finitary hypersets (the hyperuniverse N-omega [Forti, Honsell, Lenisa]) based on SFP domains (see [Abramsky], [Mislove, Moss, Oles]). We also show that these two domains are not isomorphic, thus providing a negative answer to a problem raised in [Mislove, Moss,Oles].

Abstract

Purpose: To establish the exact cause and effect relationship between protease inhibitors (PIs) and adverse events. Materials and Method: Prospective, cohort, multicenter study on HIV-positive patients who are beginning treatment with a PI. Causal relationships are evaluated using the RUCAM algorithm. Results: Since the beginning of the study 1207 patients have been enrolled. Average time of observation is 10.7 months. To date, 784 adverse events have been observed, distributed as follows: excluded 3.8%, improbable 18.5%, possible 41.3%, probable 30.1%, and highly probable 6.3%. Saquinavir shows a statistically significant difference in the rate of non-correlated events with respect to other groups. Conclusions: Over 20% of adverse events during PI treatment are shown to be non-correlated to these drugs. Saquinavir shows the highest rate of non-correlated events.

6. A Complete Characterization of Complete Intersection-Type Theories

Abstract

We characterize those intersection-type theories which yield complete intersection-type assignment systems for lambda-calculi, with respect to the three canonical set-theoretical semantics for intersection-types: the inference semantics, the simple semantics and the F-semantics. These semantics arise by taking as interpretation of types subsets of applicative structures, as interpretation of the intersection constructor set-theoretic inclusion, and by taking the interpretation of the arrow constructor a' la Scott, with respect to either any possible functionality set, or the largest one, or the least one. These results strengthen and generalize significantly all earlier results in the literature, to our knowledge, in at least three respects. First of all the inference semantics had not been considered before. Secondly, the characterizations are all given just in terms of simple closure conditions on the preorder relation on the types, rather than on the typing judgments themselves. The task of checking the condition is made therefore considerably more tractable. Lastly, we do not restrict attention just to lambda-models, but to arbitrary applicative structures which admit an interpretation function. Thus we allow also for the treatment of models of restricted lambda-calculi.
