Optical control is achieved on the excited state energy transfer between spatially separated donor and acceptor molecules, both coupled to the same optical mode of a cavity. The energy transfer occurs through the formed hybrid polaritons and can be switched on and off by means of ultraviolet and visible light. The control mechanism relies on a photochromic component used as donor, whose absorption and emission properties can be varied reversibly through light irradiation, whereas in-cavity hybridization with acceptors through polariton states enables a 6-fold enhancement of acceptor/donor contribution to the emission intensity with respect to a reference multilayer. These results pave the way for synthesizing effective gating systems for the transport of energy by light, relevant for light-harvesting and light-emitting devices, and for photovoltaic cells.

Refractive freeform components are becoming increasingly relevant for generating controlled patterns of light, because of their capability to spatially-modulate optical signals with high efficiency and low background. However, the use of these devices is still limited by difficulties in manufacturing macroscopic elements with complex, 3-dimensional (3D) surface reliefs. Here, 3D-printed and stretchable magic windows generating light patterns by refraction are introduced. The shape and, consequently, the light texture achieved can be changed through controlled device strain. Cryptographic magic windows are demonstrated through exemplary light patterns, including micro-QR-codes, that are correctly projected and recognized upon strain gating while remaining cryptic for as-produced devices. The light pattern of micro-QR-codes can also be projected by two coupled magic windows, with one of them acting as the decryption key. We present the first steps to develop radiation sensors based on the graphene field effect transistor technology. Such a sensor exploits the ambipolar behavior of graphene near its Dirac point and it is not dependent on collecting charges, but it senses ionizing radiation trough the change in conductivity of the graphene layer induced by changes of the electric field. We designed the layout of the sensors with the help of Sentaurs TCAD. We simulated static operations and the dynamic response to radiation and calculated the source- drain current through the graphene layer with a quasi-analytical model. The transistors were produced at the National Enterprise for nanoScience and nanoTechnology by depositing high quality graphene on silicon chips manufactured by the Fondazione Bruno Kessler foundry. To reduce the high contact resistance between graphene and aluminum contacts caused by oxidation of the aluminum surface, we used gold/chromium interfaces. We investigated the sensors behavior by mean of electrical measurements, extracting the graphene properties, such as mobility and doping. We observed modulation of the source-drain current, determined the Dirac point and found the optimal voltage levels to be sensitive to pulsed IR laser light and beta-particles.

The terahertz (THz) quantum cascade laser (QCL) provides a versatile tool in a plethora of applications ranging from spectroscopy to astronomy and communications. In many of these fields, compactness, single mode frequency emission, and low threshold are highly desirable. The proposed approach, based on line defects in a photonic crystal (PhC) matrix, addresses all these features while offering unprecedented capabilities in terms of flexibility, light waveguiding, and emission directionality. Nine line-defect QCLs were realized in a triangular lattice of pillars fabricated in the laser active region (AR), centered around ∼2 THz by tuning the photonic design. A maximal 36% threshold reduction was recorded for these ultraflat dispersion line-defect QCLs in comparison to standard metal-metal QCL. The mode selectivity is an intrinsic property of the chosen fabrication design and has been achieved by lithographically scaling the dimension of the defect pillars and by acting on the PhC parameters in order to match the AR emission bandwidth. The measured line-defect QCLs emitted preferentially in the single frequency mode in the propagation direction throughout the entire dynamic range. An integrated active platform with multiple directional outputs was also fabricated as proof-of-principle to demonstrate the potential of this approach. The presented results pave the way for integrated circuitry operating in the THz regime and for fundamental studies on microcavity lasers.

We investigate the feasibility of activating coherent mechanical oscillations in lasing microspheres by modulating the laser emission at a mechanical eigenfrequency. To this aim, 1.5%Nd3+:Barium- Titanium-Silicate microspheres with diameters around 50 lm were used as high quality factor (Q>106) whispering gallery mode lasing cavities. We have implemented a pump-and-probe technique in which the pump laser used to excite the Nd3+ ions is focused on a single microsphere with a microscope objective and a probe laser excites a specific optical mode with the evanescent field of a tapered fibre. The studied microspheres show monomode and multi-mode lasing action, which can be modulated in the best case up to 10 MHz. We have optically transduced thermally activated mechanical eigenmodes appearing in the 50-70MHz range, the frequency of which decreases with increasing the size of the microspheres. In a pump-and-probe configuration, we observed modulation of the probe signal up to the maximum pump modulation frequency of our experimental setup, i.e., 20 MHz. This modulation decreases with frequency and is unrelated to lasing emission, pump scattering, or thermal effects. We associate this effect to free-carrier-dispersion induced by multiphoton pump light absorption. On the other hand, we conclude that, in our current experimental conditions, it was not possible to resonantly excite the mechanical modes. Finally, we discuss on how to overcome these limitations by increasing the modulation frequency of the lasing emission and decreasing the frequency of the mechanical eigenmodes displaying a strong degree of optomechanical coupling.

We demonstrate the use of a compound optical cavity as linear displacement detector, by measuring the thermal motion of a silicon nitride suspended membrane acting as the external mirror of a near-infrared Littrow laser diode. Fluctuations in the laser optical power induced by the membrane vibrations are collected by a photodiode integrated within the laser, and then measured with a spectrum analyzer. The dynamics of the membrane driven by a piezoelectric actuator is investigated as a function of air pressure and actuator displacement in a homodyne configuration. The high Q-factor (~3.4 · 10 4 at 8.3 · 10 −3 mbar) of the fundamental mechanical mode at ~73 kHz guarantees a detection sensitivity high enough for direct measurement of thermal motion at room temperature (~87 pm RMS). The compound cavity system here introduced can be employed as a table-top, cost-effective linear displacement detector for cavity optomechanics. Furthermore, thanks to the strong optical nonlinearities of the laser compound cavity, these systems open new perspectives in the study of non-Markovian quantum properties at the mesoscale.

We demonstrate localization and field-effect spatial control of the plasmon resonance in semiconductor nanostructures, using scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy in the mid-infrared region. We adopt InAs nanowires embedding a graded doping profile to modulate the free carrier density along the axial direction. Our near-field measurements have a spatial resolution of 20 nm and demonstrate the presence of a local resonant feature whose position can be controlled by a back-gate bias voltage. In the present implementation, field-effect induces a modulation of the free carrier density profile yielding a spatial shift of the plasmon resonance of the order of 100 nm. We discuss the relevance of our electrically tunable nanoplasmonic architectures in view of innovative optoelectronic devices concepts.

We present a single-mode, low-threshold terahertz quantum cascade laser (QCL) operating on a defect line in a photonic crystal. A 55% reduction in threshold current vs. metal-metal QCLs is due to the slow light effect.

In this paper we investigate the effect of a static magnetic field and of optical pumping on the transmittance of a hybrid graphene-split ring resonator metasurface. A significant modulation of the transmitted spectra is obtained, both by optical pumping, and by a combination of optical pumping and magnetostatic biasing. The transmittance modulation features spectral fingerprints that are characteristic of a non-Trivial interplay between the bare graphene response and the split ring resonance.

The random laser is a fascinating concept because, further to the fundamental research investigating light transport into complex media, it allows us to obtain non-conventional spectral distribution and angular beam emission patterns not achievable with conventional approaches. Even more intriguing is the possibility to engineer a priori the optical properties of a disordered distribution in an amplifying medium. We demonstrate here the realization of a terahertz quantum cascade laser in an isotropic hyperuniform disordered distribution exhibiting unique features, such as the presence of a photonic band gap, low threshold current density, unconventional angular emission and optical bistability.

This roadmap was developed within the framework of the European Graphene Flagship and outlines the main targets and research areas as best understood at the start of this ambitious project. We provide an overview of the key aspects of graphene and related materials (GRMs), ranging from fundamental research challenges to a variety of applications in a large number of sectors, highlighting the steps necessary to take GRMs from a state of raw potential to a point where they might revolutionize multiple industries. We also define an extensive list of acronyms in an effort to standardize the nomenclature in this emerging field.

A terahertz quantum cascade laser has been realized from an isotropic disordered hyperuniform design. Such a system presents a photonic band-gap although it is characterized by an efficient depletion of the long range order. Hyperuniform patterns allow greater versatility in engineering band gaps in comparison to standard photonic-crystal materials. Bidimensional hyperuniform patterns were simulated for hexagonal tiles composed of high refractive index disks merged in a low dielectric constant polymeric matrix. Based on this design, quantum cascade lasers were fabricated by standard photolithography, metal evaporation, lift-off and dry-etching techniques in a half-stack bound to continuum active region emitting around 2.9 THz.

By placing a material in close vicinity of a resonant optical element, its intrinsic optical response can be tuned, possibly to a wide extent. Here, we show that a graphene monolayer, spaced a few tenths of nanometers from a split ring resonator metasurface, exhibits a magneto-optical response which is strongly influenced by the presence of the metasurface itself. This hybrid system holds promises in view of thin optical modulators, polarization rotators, and nonreciprocal devices, in the technologically relevant terahertz spectral range. Moreover, it could be chosen as the playground for investigating the cavity electrodynamics of Dirac fermions in the quantum regime.

This mode has an experimental single-particle optomechanical coupling rate of vertical bar g(o, OM)vertical bar= 1.8 MHz (vertical bar g(o, OM)vertical bar/2 pi=0.3 MHz) and shows strong dynamical back-action effects at room temperature. The geometrical flexibility of the unit-cell would lend itself to further engineering of the cavity region to localize the mode within the full phononic band-gap present at 4 GHz while keeping high go, OM values. This would lead to longer lifetimes at cryogenic temperatures, due to the suppression of acoustic leakage.

To achieve large electromechanical interaction strength, we implement an inverse shadow mask fabrication scheme which obtains capacitor gaps as small as 30 nm while maintaining a silicon surface quality necessary for minimizing optical loss. In the quest for devices with a better signal-to-noise ratio, we theoretically investigate a plasma-wave photodetector in which a dc photocurrent is generated in a graphene FET. The noise equivalent power of our device is shown to be much smaller than that of a Dyakonov-Shur detector in a wide spectral range

The pronounced flattening of the photonic bands causes a slow-down of the group velocity by one order of magnitude on the time scale of the oscillation period of light.

We report on the transition from the strong to the weak light-matter coupling regime between an intersubband excitation and a photonic crystal resonance in a nanostructured semiconductor membrane. Such a transition is induced by varying the intensity of an ultrafast light pulse, which is employed for pumping and probing the system eigenmodes. The phenomenon is interpreted in terms of the saturation of the intersubband transition due to the large number of photoexcited electrons in the quantum well, as confirmed by a thorough analysis performed both in frequency and time domain.

In this work we demonstrate the achievement of light-matter strong coupling regime between an intersubband transition and the photonic bandlike mode supported by a metallic grating. Polaritonic resonances have been identified in the reflectivity spectra at 10° incidence, with a clear anticrossing appearing when the photonic mode is tuned across the transition line. Experimental results are in good agreement with the simulations performed with a scattering-matrix approach. This cavity design can be further optimized and is likely to open the way to a new class of time-resolved measurements, as it allows pump-and-probe measurements to be performed in collinear geometries.
