Camden (1805-1891) Papers, 1784-1958, undated. Papers of Judge Gideon D. Camden (1805-1891) of Clarksburg, Harrison County, West Virginia, and papers of his grandson Wilson Lee Camden (1870-1958). Gideon D. Camden was a lawyer, Democratic politician, member of the Virginia Convention of 1850-1851, circuit judge, and state senator (1872-1876). His papers include correspondence, legal and business papers, surveys and plats, and printed material. Subjects include Virginia, West Virginia, and national politics; the railroad, oil, timber, and coal industries; and Camden's law practice. Wilson Lee Camden papers include correspondence, legal papers, surveys and plats, printed material, business manuscripts, photographs, map, and ledgers. Subjects include the settlement of his grandfather's estate, and extensive coal, timber, land, railroad, and oil interests in West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania. The Robert Alan Goldberg papers (1880-2019) house materials gathered by Goldberg while researching information for his books, Back to the Soil: The Jewish Farmers of Clarion, Utah, and Their World, Grassroots Resistance: Social Movements in Twentieth Century America, Enemies Within: The Culture of Conspiracy in Modern America, Hooded Empire: The Ku Klux Klan in Colorado, and Barry Goldwater., The materials for the book, Back to the Soil: The Jewish Farmers of Clarion, Utah and Their World, are housed in boxes 1-4. Clarion was a Jewish agricultural settlement which existed from 1912 to 1915, with the last members leaving in the 1920s. It was led by Benjamin Brown and other Jewish immigrants from the Pale of Russia and Poland. The colony received homestead land from the state of Utah and tried to establish an agricultural Jewish community near Gunnison in Sanpete County. The small community failed shortly after being established because of poor soil, lack of water, physical hardships, and discontent among its members. Box 1 includes the initial research proposal, and the diaries, monographs, and transcripts of interviews used to form the basis of the book. Most of these papers are in Yiddish with English translations, and were written by the leaders of the agriculture experiment. Box 2 holds two drafts of Goldberg's book. Boxes 3-4 contain correspondence with and written recollections from the survivors of Clarion and or their family members. This material is organized alphabetically by family name., The materials for Grassroots Resistance: Social Movements in Twentieth Century America are housed in boxes 5-21. They consist of brochures, newsletters, newspapers, and membership applications from activist groups. Magazine articles and news clippings about the activities of these academic, political, religious, and or radical organizations from the 1960s-1970s era are also included. Some of the groups represented are the National Socialist White People's Party, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Christian Anti-Communists Crusade, Clergy and Laymen Concerned about Vietnam, the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy, the National Organization for Women, and the Rainbow Family of Living Light. Box 5 has material on African American history and the civil rights movement from 1968 to 1972. Boxes 6-14 contain information on the various activist groups and are arranged alphabetically by group name. Box 15 houses information on activist causes prevalent in the United States during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Boxes 16-20 hold 110 different newspapers from this same era. The newspapers are from Cuba, China, Vietnam, and the activist syndicated underground press, as well as some established American newspapers. The newspaper publications are listed in alphabetical order by their published trade name with a cross reference to the publishing organization in the folder description. Addenda to the collection includes other research and general materials.

A scrapbook and clippings, advertisements, letters, manuscripts of speeches, and notes on medical practice, compiled by Dr. John Frissell (1810-1882), a physician at the Wheeling Hospital and medical superintendent of military prisoners and soldiers in Wheeling during the Civil War. The scrapbook is a folio volume, Register of the Sick and Wounded, U.S.A. General Hospital. There is also information on the Medical Society of the City of Wheeling, the West Virginia Medical Society, medical conventions in West Virginia, and Wheeling local history

James Brisbin, a Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, native, served as an Army officer in the Civil War and the Indian Wars, 1868-1891. He was stationed at Fort Ellis, Fort Assiniboine, Fort Custer, Montana Territory, and many other western forts. Brisbin was also a writer and publicist. The collection contains a small amount of correspondence (1860-1890), and writings (1850-1891) concerning the Army, the Indian Wars, the West, and Montana Territory., This collection consists almost exclusively of drafts and copies of James S. Brisbin's writings. These writings generally focus on his army career, the Plains Indian and the Indian Wars, and other facets of his experiences in the Northwest. Also included are articles and handwritten copies of letters to newspapers on a wide variety of topics. The collection also contains a small amount of correspondence, including Civil War era letters, family letters and correspondence on Brisbin's military career in the West. A portion of this collection has been microfilmed (Microfilm 328). (Manuscript Collection 39).

Martin Maginnis (1841-1919) was a Democratic Montana Territorial Delegate to Congress from 1872 to 1882; a member of the 1889 Montana Constitutional Convention; and newspaper publisher. Papers (1864-1912) consist primarily of incoming correspondence concerning politics; and outgoing correspondence, court papers, legal documents, and a scrapbook. Incoming correspondence includes typescript copies., The papers consist primarily of incoming correspondence concerning politics, Indian agency administration, the military, and railroad development. In addition there is a small amount of outgoing correspondence, a scrapbook, speeches, and writings. Most of the letters have been transcribed, and the transcriptions are filed with the originals. Papers, photographs, binders, artifacts, and newspapers belonging to Lillian Waugh, professor of Women's Studies at WVU and gender equality activist. This collection contains personal family photographs, correspondence, and research about Waugh keeping her surname after marriage. Protest and activism papers, photographs, and artifacts include assorted materials related to Waugh's involvement in the National Organization for Women (NOW), the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) campaign, gender equality movements, and anti-war protests. Correspondence is both personal and pertaining to WASP, Inc., a postwar organization for the WASP. The collection also includes news clippings and articles about Hohn and WASP reunion ephemera. Flight records indicate she served at Romulus Army Air Base, Romulus, Michigan; Greenwood Army Air Base, Greenwood, Mississippi; Tyndall Field, Panama City, Florida and Cochran Field, Georgia.

Her personnel papers detail her orders, training records and exams, records of compliance, job title/salary, and immunization records. Also includes post-war records regarding the fight for militarization, the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame Medal and other materials.

Primarily letters written by Edmond, mostly to his wife and brother, while he was serving in Congress from 1797-1801. A graduate of Yale, Edmond was a lawyer in Newtown, Connecticut. His letters describe strained relations with France, the defeat of Bonaparte, a duel, the theater, and a presidential ball. He also gives ample advice to his wife on her spiritual and physical health. His papers also contain legal notes from cases he took, deeds, a journal page written while in Congress, and a statement of his injury in the Revolutionary War. Family papers include deeds for land in Newtown bought and sold by John Chandler, Edmond's father-in-law, and correspondence, receipts, notes on births, marriages and deaths, and assorted documents relating to the Booth and Curtis families, his daughter and granddaughter respectively.

T.C. Power was a Montana merchandise, transportation, mining, ranching, banking, and real estate magnate; and U.S. Senator from Montana from 1890 to 1895. Collection (1868-1950) includes personal, business, and political correspondence plus financial and legal papers of many of his business enterprises. Collection documents Power's involvement in military and Indian trade, steamboating, freighting, stage coach lines, mail contracts, cattle and sheep ranching, mining, banking, bridge building, townsite development, and other enterprises., The T.C. Power Papers are arranged into sixteen subgroups: 1) T.C. Power--Political, 2) T.C. Power--Personal, 3) T.C. Power and Brother (includes associated companies), 4) C.B. Power--Personal, 5) Grain Companies, 6) Hardware Companies, 7) Mercantile Companies, 8) Mining Companies, 9) Organizations 10) Ranch Companies, 11) Real Estate, 12) Transportation Companies, 13) Water Companies, 14) Bismarck, North Dakota, enterprises, 15) Washington and Oregon enterprises, and 16) Miscellaneous enterprises., The papers (1881-1902) in the T.C. POWER--POLITICAL SUBGROUP document his unsuccessful bid to be the first State governor in 1889 and, more importantly, his term as a United States senator, 1890-1895. Forming the largest segment of the political papers is the General Correspondence, which reflects issues that affected the livelihood of his constituents: free silver and the wool tariff. Most of this is incoming correspondence with only a few letters of reply from Power. Other questions of interest to Montanans during his term of office were the establishment of better services, such as post offices for rural areas, irrigation, uses of public lands, and requests for political patronage. The subgroup also contains Financial Records, including an election expense account for 1888-1895; Legal Documents, Speeches, including an 1889 campaign speech; Clippings, mainly tariff issues, irrigation, and political scrapbooks; and a Miscellany Series, which includes lists of registered voters; federal documents; a record of bills, etc., pertaining to irrigation introduced in the U.S. Senate during the 52nd Congress, an 1892 list of attorneys in Montana, and petitions for the establishment of post offices., The papers (1871-1923) in the T.C. POWER--PERSONAL SUBGROUP reflect his involvement in the firm of T.C. Power and Brother, and his financial investments in other areas. Because Power played such an important role in the administration of T.C. Power and Brother, his General Correspondence details some of the activity of the holding company, particularly after 1900. The Financial Records, which detail his personal investments in mining and real estate--including areas outside of Montana, make up another significant portion of his personal papers. There are also some records for his household expenses. Other series include Legal Documents, consisting mostly of agreements and bills of sale; Organization records, including stock certificates and minutes of meetings; miscellaneous Clippings; assay and company Reports; and a Miscellany Series including such things as a 1920 list of sheep owners in Montana and a 1916 list of materials suitable for paving streets in Fort Benton., The largest volume of records are those in the T.C. POWER AND BROTHER SUBGROUP. T.C. Power and Brother was a holding company whose operations first centered at Fort Benton. Originally the activity of the company focused on steamboating on the Missouri River, supplying merchandise to branch stores, Indian agencies and military posts, cattle ranches, and area residents. The company later expanded to include mining, stage coach lines, and real estate. Records for the holding company are nearly complete for the period 1880-1900. Some records, such as outgoing correspondence and financial material, date to the late 1860s. Between 1900 and 1920 there is almost no correspondence in the company's records. Consequently, the personal papers of T.C. Power and of C.B. Power, and those companies in which T.C. Power and Brother had an interest, must be used to fill this gap., Charles Benton Power's personal records (1895-1941), in the C.B. POWER--PERSONAL SUBGROUP, document his active participation in various aspects of T.C. Power and Brother, as well as his extensive interests outside of Montana. His General Correspondence (1895-1940) documents the economic reversals of the 1920s and 1930s, particularly as they affected the companies of T.C. Power and Brother. Other series include Financial Records (1895-1940); Legal Documents (1894-1938); and Organization records (1922-1932), including stock certificates and minutes of the Montana Automobile Association., The GRAIN, HARDWARE, MERCANTILE, MINING, RANCH, REAL ESTATE, TRANSPORTATION, and WATER SUBGROUPS reflect the Powers' wide-ranging economic interests. In many ways the records represent a cross-section of Montana's economic life during the late 1800s and the early 1900s. During the 1800s most of the records of these companies were retained with the T.C. Power and Brother records. After 1900, however, they were filed separately by each company. The difficulty then in dealing with this collection is that the whole Power corporation was not entirely consistent in either of these practices. Consequently a researcher interested in one of these subgoup companies also has to look in the T.C. Power and Brother records, and in the personal papers of T.C. Power and C.B. Power. In addition to their Montana businesses, T.C. and C.B. Power were also involved in real estate, irrigation, mercantile, banking, and lumbering operations in Oregon and Washington., The records in the WASHINGTON AND OREGON SUBGROUP have been kept separate from the Montana businesses, but additional material can be found in the T.C. Power and Brother, T.C. Power--Personal, and C.B. Power--Personal subgroups. (Manuscript Collection 55).

Contains the following type of materials: oral histories., Contains information pertaining to the following military units: Chaplain Corps., General description of the collection: The Chaplains Oral History papers include a total of 16 chaplains and Chaplain Corps personnel interviews done under the Senior Officer Oral History Program, the vast majority of which deal with the Vietnam-era Army. There are two from World War II and one from Desert Storm. The single heaviest denominational influence is the Roman Catholic Church, with small representations of Protestant, Episcopal and Jewish.

Primarily justice of the peace records, namely summonses, depositions, complaints and executions, from the long career of a Groton, Connecticut war hero. Also includes papers of his son, Isaac, from various town offices he held and from the settlement of the estate of Peleg Lewis, deeds from Benadam's father and grandfather, both of whom were named Benadam, and records of the town of Groton.

Records contain letters, news clippings, photographs, documents and other personal papers describing Steadman's life in aviation, including her work as a owner/operator of Trimble Aviation, as flight instructor, running acharter service, various other jobs in the world of aviation and national and international air races.

John Harrison and Robert Harrison were Harlowton, Montana, residents who served in Europe in World War II. This collection consists primarily of letters written by John C. and Robert Harrison to their parents in Harlowton and Bozeman, Montana, while they served in England, Belgium, and Germany during World War II. The letters discuss the war, the Harrison family, wartime Europe, and life in the military, including a letter from Robert in a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany. John's letters to his mother also mention Montana politics including references to Lee Metcalf. A large group of the correspondence consists of typed transcriptions of letters from John C. to his wife "China." Also included in the collection is miscellaneous correspondence (1943-1946), clippings (1940s), and a writing (1944) by John Thompson describing the military action in the hundred days after the Normandy invasion. In addition there are photocopies of a speech (1950s) to a U.S. Congressional Committee concerning tuberculosis in the Montana Native American population, and of a memorial (1963) to Charles Nelson Pray, both of which were written by John C. Harrison. (SC 1913).

In this age of data based decision making and accountability, parent involvement and data collection are paramount. This study represents a significant contribution to educational research by extending the understanding of home-school communication media with specific regard to daily progress reports. The purpose of this study was to compare communication scores of parents of student using paper daily progress reports with communication scores of parents of student using electronic daily progress reports. This quasi-experimental posttest only control group design research study compared survey results of parents (N = 45) of middle school students currently using a DPR as part of an intervention in a middle school located in central Connecticut. The survey instrument was the Parental Academic Support Scale (PASS) containing five subscales: Academic Performance, Classroom Behavior, Preparation, Hostile Peer Interactions, and Health. Independent t tests were conducted to discover whether the mean communication scores between groups of parents were significantly different. A chi-square (x²) analysis was conducted to evaluate difference in media preference between groups. Significant differences in communication practices and preferences were found. Parents of children using electronic daily progress reports practiced more regular communication with teachers. Likewise, parent media preferences were significantly different between groups. Recommendations for further research are discussed.

At the same time, a new type of newspaper owner has emerged, very different from traditional publishers, the best of whom sought to balance business interests with civic responsibility to the community where their paper was located. As newspapers confront an uncertain future, the choices these new owners make could determine whether vast 'news deserts' arise in communities and regions throughout the country. "Nineteenth-century editors frequently discussed their work in public forums (including their own periodicals) and in private correspondence. These sources provide insight into how editors imagined their work and their professional roles. For many nineteenth-century editors, one of the most important (and underappreciated) elements of their work was building expansive social networks that promoted productive relationships between writers, readers, and other editors. After establishing the function of the nineteenth-century editor in Chapter I, I proceed in the remaining chapters to examine how specific Southern editors attempted to gain access to a national audience by cultivating relationships with their Northern counterparts. Chapter II uses Caroline Gilman's career to demonstrate the many ways that, despite her religious and family connections to the Boston literati, her gender prevented her from establishing the types of professional ties that could have advanced her career. Chapter III analyzes the impact of the New York-based Young America movement on the career of William Gilmore Simms, and Chapter IV contends that Edgar Allan Poe lacked the social capital necessary to successfully negotiate a professional relationship with New York editor Nathaniel Parker Willis. These chapters demonstrate the importance of social networks, particularly connections with Northerners, in the professional lives of Southern editors."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

"Telewarfare: the use of unmanned vehicles, ships, aircraft, weapons, or other devices that are remotely controlled, often at great distances from the battlefield or other locations, in direct support of military operations by providing real-time intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and attack capabilities. The focus is a study of human roles and risks inherent in telewarfare from an occupational medicine standpoint, and proposes a strategy to anticipate and mitigate risks known or believed to exist among telewarriors. This paper specifically focuses on Airmen most likely to be engaged in telewarfare. Those Airmen include unmanned Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) operators, sensor operators and analysts in Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) activities, and includes Total Force constituents. Earlier this year China released a new defence White Paper. Like its predecessor two years ago, the paper leaves much unsaid - especially about China's maritime aspirations beyond its immediate waters. In contrast, the equivalent American document sets out a consistent picture of American aspirations, strategy and capability. By comparing the Chinese military budget with those of the US and its allies, it is clear that China is unlikely to be a peer competitor on the wider stage any time soon.

"This paper addresses the controversy associated with the passage of the Arizona's immigration law (SB 1070), the lawsuit by the federal government, and the impact immigration law will have on all states, especially Kansas. Specifically, this paper will compare the Arizona and federal immigration law, review the proposed 2008 Kansas law, describe law enforcement duties of state and the federal law, analyze the relationship between the local, state and federal governments, and provide general information on E-Verify and In-state tuition."

During the past year, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has engaged in an in depth review of short term small dollar loans, specifically payday loans extended by non depository institutions and deposit advance products offered by a small, but growing number of depository institution to their deposit account customers. This review began with a field hearing held in Birmingham, Alabama in January 2012. At that event, CFPB Director Richard Cordray noted that "the purpose of th[e] field hearing, and the purpose of all our research an analysis and outreach on these issues, is to help us figure out how to determine the right approach to protect consumers and ensure that they have access to a small loan market that is fair, transparent, and competitive." Director Cordray went on to state that "[t] hrough forums like this and through our supervision program, we will systematically gather data to get a complete picture of the payday market and its impact on consumers," including how consumers "are affected by long term use of these products."--Introduction.

Benjamin Franklin's 'Albany Papers' came from a meeting of representatives from the colonies and the Iroquois tribes. The meeting was held in Albany, New York in 1754. Its goal was to gain solidarity among the parties in the face of the rising threats from the French that would soon become the French and Indian War. Franklin wrote a plan for uniting the several colonies. It was rejected at this time, both by the colonies and by the British, but its outlines are actually quite similar to what the Americans eventually adopted after the Revolutionary War. The version here includes some notes and explanations made by Franklin.
