Schools play a central role in the transmission of many respiratory infections. Heterogeneous social contact patterns associated with the social structures of schools (i.e., classes/grades) are likely to influence the within-school transmission dynamics, but data-driven evidence on fine-scale transmission patterns between students has been limited. Using a mathematical model, we analyzed a large-scale dataset of seasonal influenza outbreaks in Matsumoto city, Japan, to infer social interactions within and between classes/grades from observed transmission patterns. While the relative contribution of within-class and within-grade transmissions to the reproduction number varied with the number of classes per grade, the overall within-school reproduction number, which determines the initial growth of cases and the risk of sustained transmission, was only minimally associated with class sizes and the number of classes per grade. This finding suggests that interventions that change the size and number of classes, e.g., splitting classes and staggered attendance, may have a limited effect on the control of school outbreaks. We also found that vaccination and mask-wearing of students were associated with reduced susceptibility (vaccination and mask-wearing) and infectiousness (mask-wearing), and hand washing was associated with increased susceptibility. As shown by Matsumoto and Tonomura, the phase shift imposed on an electron beam by an electrostatic phase plate is constant for all (straight) electron trajectories passing through a circular aperture, provided that (1) the electric field goes to zero at distances far above and below the aperture and (2) the value of the phase shift at the boundary (i.e. perimeter of the aperture) is constant [5]. We now point out that the result can be valid for any shape of the hole in the aperture, and, furthermore, it requires only that the electric field is equal and opposite at large distances above and below the aperture, respectively. We also point out that the conditions of validity of the Matsumoto-Tonomura approximation constrain the phase shift across the open aperture to a quadratic algebraic form when the phase shift is not constant around the perimeter. Finally, it follows that the projection approximation for calculating the phase shift must fail for strong phase shifts of higher than quadratic form. These extensions of the original result of Matsumoto and Tonomura give further insight to the analysis of charging phenomena observed with apertures that are designed to produce contrast in in-focus images of weak phase objects.

Matsumoto and Amano (2008) showed that every single-qubit Clifford+T operator can be uniquely written of a particular form, which we call the Matsumoto-Amano normal form. In this mostly expository paper, we give a detailed and streamlined presentation of Matsumoto and Amano's results, simplifying some proofs along the way. We also point out some corollaries to Matsumoto and Amano's work, including an intrinsic characterization of the Clifford+T subgroup of SO(3), which also yields an efficient T-optimal exact single-qubit synthesis algorithm. Interestingly, this also gives an alternative proof of Kliuchnikov, Maslov, and Mosca's exact synthesis result for the Clifford+T subgroup of U(2)., Comment: 13 pages. The taphonomic features and paleoecology of this species were investigated focused on vertically embedded individuals of articulated Inoceramus amakusensis Nagao et Matsumoto. In the Hinoshima Formation, Himenoura Group of Kyushu, Japan, this Santonian (Late Cretaceous) inoceramid bivalve characteristically occurs in incised-valley fill siliciclastic marine deposits. Modes of I. amakusensis occurrence and preservation, from in situ (= occurrence in life position) to allochthonous shell fragments, are strongly affected by its paleoecology and depositional environments. Several I. amakusensis (up to 25 cm in shell height) were recovered from bioturbated sandstones associated with storm-influenced deposits. Their commissural planes are almost perpendicular to the bedding plane, with the anterior face oriented downward and the posteroventral portion extending upward. Furthermore, I. amakusensis is morphologically comparable to endobyssate mytilid bivalves today. These results suggest that this Cretaceous species was an orthothetic sand sticker at least during mid-ontogeny that preferentially inhabited a well-oxygenated, nearshore seafloor. I. amakusensis was distributed in various depositional environments and has been regarded as a recliner in offshore muddy substrate. However, the present discovery suggests that it was also well adapted, with an upright life position, to high-energy shallow clastic environments characterized by high sediment supply.

The author tried a study, viewed mainly from the plan of sewerage, on the precipitations related to three cities-Nagano, Matsumoto and Ueda-having representative inland meteorology in Honshu, Japan. Though these cities are among the regions where the annual amount of rainfall is so little, it is observed that an intense precipitation of a short duration, an indispensable subject to be taken into consideration in making a design of municipal drainage work, of these three cities is not to be evaluated to be so small as in the case of the annual rainfall.

This paper analysed the distribution of the manufacturing and employment opportunity in three regions such as Matsumoto, Okaya-Suwa and Kamiina, and examined their geographical implications. Obtained results can be summarized as follows: 1. Those three regions are located respectively on each own basins, that are nestle within the mountainous areas in the upland, central part of Nagano Prefecture. Steep mountain ranges have prevented peoples in those basins from the development of mutual transportation and communication links, human activities were restricted within each basins histrically. Still today, commuting zones, the most important daily activity, exemplify this topographical restriction. 2. After World War the Second, silk was replaced by chemical fibers and silkreeling industry in those regions had declined. To recover this decline and to keep employment opportunities, precision machine factories for the production of watches, cameras, and music boxes were introduced to this region such cities as Okaya, Suwa, and Ina. Additional factories such as electronics parts manufacturing have subsequently been built in other cities as well. At first, these manufacturings were based upon intensive labour force similarly. Lately they breaks away by degrees their bygone character and are now developing innovative products such as information and communication instruments and equipments, depending on high level technologies breeded by the combination of the manufacturing of electronics and precision machines. 3. In three regions, manufacturing is an important source of employment, above all, peripheral rural hinterlands. In the urban centers, government and private companies offer many sort of services and employment opportunities for labourers. And the distribution of employment opportunities reflect the spatial structure of the manufacturings within each basins.
