Commercial organisations continue to face a growing and evolving threat of data breaches and system compromises, making their cyber-security function critically important. Many organisations employ a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to lead such a function. We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 15 CISOs and six senior organisational leaders, between October 2019 and July 2020, as part of a wider exploration into the purpose of CISOs and cyber-security functions. In this paper, we employ broader security scholarship related to ontological security and sociological notions of identity work to provide an interpretative analysis of the CISO role in organisations. Research findings reveal that cyber security is an expert system that positions the CISO as an interpreter of something that is mystical, unknown and fearful to the uninitiated. They show how the fearful nature of cyber security contributes to it being considered an ontological threat by the organisation, while responding to that threat contributes to the organisation's overall identity. We further show how cyber security is analogous to a belief system and how one of the roles of the CISO is akin to that of a modern-day soothsayer for senior management; that this role is precarious and, at the same time, superior, leading to alienation within the organisation. Our study also highlights that the CISO identity of protector-from-threat, linked to the precarious position, motivates self-serving actions that we term `cyber sophistry'. Educational entities are establishing program degree content designed to ensure cybersecurity and information security assurance skills are adequate and efficient for preparing students to be successful in this very important field. Many Master’s level programs include courses that address these skills in an attempt to provide a well-rounded program of study. However, undergraduates who are in the practitioner’s world have other alternatives to gain these skills. These individuals can gain various certifications, such as the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or the Certified Information Security Manager (CISM). Due to a perceived gap between academics and field knowledge, it appears that academic programs may not fully consider the very specific competencies of C-Suite members (e.g. Chief Information Security Officer (CISO)) since field certification may be the only validation of such skills. Therefore, a framework from degree to industry employment acceptance is needed. To this end, the current study suggests the use of a framework in which to examine and compare C-Suite competencies versus academic preparations. Ultimately, this framework will assist researchers in examining the actual, current job tasks of C-Suite members. Since the CISO position is new to the industry, becoming a common job title within only the last few years, the reporting structure for the CISO varies widely and various organizations have differing expectations of the position [1]. Therefore, the initial phases of this study focus solely upon this position as the starting benchmark. This paper explores historical aspects of the workforce skills gap in the area of computer security while providing survey validation results from Phase I of this project. We explore the impact of glacial–interglacial climate variations on the marine carbon-isotope record by means of the sophisticated marine biogeochemistry model RECOM. Different to most other marine carbon cycle models, RECOM does not rely on fixed Redfield ratios for organic soft tissue. Instead, the ratios of C:N and C:Chl in phytoplankton are calculated as a response to light, temperature and nutrient supply, which allows for assessing potential shifts in marine autotroph stochiometry. Our sensitivity studies feature a recently developed model version equipped with carbon isotopes (RECOM-ciso) forced with model output from fully coupled climate simulations.

Within the Naval Education and Training Command, Curriculum and Instructional Standards Offices (CISOs) are responsible for training quality assurance at local training activities. This study evaluated the CISO concept and its implementation. While the concept is basically sound, it has not been well implemented. Consequently, recommendations were developed for improving the operations of CISOs and for increasing their contributions to training quality assurance.

As we are currently living in the era of digital transformation, the security of our data is increasingly becoming a necessity and not just a small function of a business or a government. The role of the Chief Information Security Officer might be the key to face this challenge in the proper way and with the right awareness. This thesis aims to understand the current state of the art of the role by exploring literature on a CISO's right competencies, the relevant standards and certifications they should refer to, the right position for them in the organizational chart and the specific responsibilities they should face. Would it be possible to find a universal standard for the role?

Tianshan Mountains are the headwater regions for the central Asia rivers, providing water resources for ecological protection and economic development in semiarid regions. Due to scarce observations, the hydroclimatic characteristics of the Tianshan Mountains Precipitation (TMP) measured over highland (>1500 m) regions remain to be revealed. Here, we show the TMP belongs to a monsoon-like climate regime, with a distinct annual range and a high ratio of summer-to-yearly rainfall, and exhibits six abrupt changes, dividing the annual cycle into six precipitation sub-seasons. Over the past 60 years, the yearly TMP has significantly increased by 17.3%, with a dramatic increase in winter (135.7%). The TMP displays a significant 40-day climatological intra-seasonal oscillation (CISO) in summer. The TMP CISO’s wet phase results from the confrontation of the eastward propagating mid-tropospheric Balkhash Lake Low and the southward migrating Mongolian High. The sudden changes in the two climatological circulation systems trigger TMP’s changes, shaping the 40-day CISO. Emerging scientific issues are also discussed. © 2024, The Author(s).

Cyber incident response is critical to business continuity -- we describe a new exercise that challenges professionals to play the role of Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for a major financial organisation. Teams must decide how organisational team and budget resources should be deployed across Enterprise Architecture (EA) upgrades and cyber incidents. Every choice made has an impact -- some prevent whilst others may trigger new or continue current attacks. We explain how the underlying platform supports these interactions through a reactionary event mechanism that introduces events based on the current attack surface of the organisation. We explore how our platform manages to introduce randomness on top of triggered events to ensure that the exercise is not deterministic and better matches incidents in the real world. We conclude by describing next steps for the exercise and how we plan to use it in the future to better understand risk decision making., Comment: DGASP-57

Currently, cholesteatoma is a major morbidity problem. This entity carries with it the deterioration of the quality of life, given the consequences of the disease and the sequelae related to the surgi-cal intervention. Cholesteatoma is a benign tumor that affects the middle ear, with destruction of its innermost part. The fundamental purposes of otological surgical treatment are: to eliminate infection, resection of abnormal tissues, to obtain an aerated middle ear cavity (conchoplasty), a stable, mobile and well-positioned eardrum, reconstruct the tympanic membrane and the sound conduction (tympanoplasty), improve hearing or maintain it and avoid the possibility of relapses, sequelae or complications. Consequently, the general objective of this research is to review and summarize the fundamental aspects related to the main surgeries that allow the elimination of cholesteatoma. The research was carried out under a bibliographic documentary type methodolo-gy, under the review modality. The definitive resolution of cholesteatoma is basically surgical. There is a wide range of types of surgi-cal interventions, approach techniques and their combina-tion, which is why knowledge of both the anatomy and the entity is of vital importance for the surgeon and his team. An accurate diagnosis is essential for making surgical decisions and mini-mizing risks and postoperative complications. Intact canal wall mastoidectomy has generally been indicated for more limited cholesteatoma than for more aggressive ones. In the latter, open mas-toidectomy is indicated. In closed techniques, recurrent cholesteatomas are more frequent and very often require a second exploration to rule out this recurrence. A recur-rent cholesteatoma after a closed intervention may be a reason for a new intervention with an open technique., Actualmente, o colesteatoma é um grande problema de morbidade. Esta entidade carrega consigo a deterioração da qualidade de vida, dadas as consequências da doença e as sequelas relacionadas com a intervenção surgiocal. O coles-teatoma é um tumor benigno que afecta o ouvido médio, com destruição da sua parte mais interna. Os objectivos funda-mentais do tratamento cirúrgico otológi-co são: eliminar a infecção, ressecção de tecidos anormais, obter uma cavidade aerada do ouvido médio (conchoplastia), um tímpano estável, móvel e bem posicionado, reconstruir a membrana timpâni-ca e a condução do som (timpanoplastia), melhorar a audição ou mantê-la e evitar a possi-bilidade de recaídas, sequelas ou complicações. Consequentemente, o objectivo geral desta inves-tigação é rever e resumir os aspectos fundamentais relacionados com as principais cirurgias que permitem a eliminação do colesteatoma. A investigação foi levada a cabo sob a modalidade de revisão, sob a forma de methodolo-gy de tipo documentário bibliográfico. A resolução definitiva do colesteatoma é basicamente cirúrgica. Existe uma vasta gama de tipos de intervenções cirúrgi-cas, técnicas de abor-dagem e sua combinação, razão pela qual o conhecimento tanto da anatomia como da entidade é de vital importância para o cirurgião e para a sua equipa. Um diagnóstico pre-ciso é essencial para tomar decisões cirúrgicas e minimizar os riscos e complicações pós-operatórias. A mastoidectomia intacta da parede do canal tem sido geralmente indicada para o colesteatoma mais limitado do que para os mais agressivos. Nesta última, a mastoidectomia aberta é indicada. Em técnicas fechadas, os colesteatomas recorrentes são mais frequentes e muitas vezes requerem uma segunda exploração para excluir esta recorrência. Um colesteatoma recorrente após uma intervenção fechada pode ser uma razão para uma nova intervenção com uma técnica aberta., En la actualidad, el colesteatoma es un problema importante de morbilidad. Esta entidad lleva consigo el deterioro de la calidad de vida, dadas las consecuencias propias de la enfermedad y las secuelas relacionadas con la intervención quirúrgica. El colesteatoma es un tumor benigno que afecta al oído medio, con destrucción de su parte más interna. Los propósitos fundamentales del tratamiento quirúrgico otológico son: eliminar la infección, resección de los tejidos anormales, obtener una cavidad en el oído medio aireada (conchoplastia), de un tímpano estable, móvil y en buena posición, reconstruir la membrana timpánica y el sistema de conducción del sonido (timpanoplastia), mejorar la audición o mantenerla y evitar la posibilidad de recidivas, secuelas o complicaciones. En consecuencia, el objetivo general de la presente investigación es revisar y resumir los aspectos fundamentales relacionados con las principales cirugías que permiten eliminar el colesteatoma. La investigación se realizó bajo una metodología de tipo documental bibliográfica, bajo la modalidad de revisión. La resolución definitiva del colesteatoma es básicamente quirúrgica. Existe una amplia gama de tipos de intervenciones quirúrgicas, técnicas de abordaje y combinación de estas, por lo que se hace de vital importancia para el cirujano y su equipo el conocimiento tanto de la anatomía como de la entidad. Un diagnóstico preciso es fundamental para la toma de decisiones quirúrgica y la minimización de los riesgos y complicaciones postoperatorias. La Mastoidectomía de la pared canal intactos por lo general, se ha tenido indicada para el colesteatoma más limitado que para aquellos más agresivos. En estos últimos se encuentran indicadas las mastoidectomia abiertas. En las técnicas cerradas son más frecuentes los colesteatomas recurrentes y muy a menudo requieren una segunda exploración para descartar esta recidiva.
