In the early 21st century Europe experiences increasing far-right tendencies and a general rise in xenophobic nationalism. This seems to be accompanied by a general ignorance or even indifference towards Europe’s dark history of mass violence and genocide inspired by radical ideologies such as Fascism, Communism, and extreme nationalism. This chapter explores the level and nature of indifference among Danish teenagers through three qualitative case studies of how Danish high school youth react to examples of right-wing and Fascist revisionism. Drawing on experiential learning methods, the case studies confront the teenagers with examples of blatant representations of Fascist and extreme nationalist ideology and symbolism within the emotionally and aesthetically appealing world of top football. Observing reactions or lack thereof, we invite the teenagers to explore the examples further and we encourage them to respond if they feel like. We draw on examples from Croatian and Serbian popular culture, something that will be alien to Danish youth, both in order to avoid present national narratives and to explore the extent to which reactions and reflections to revisionism and proud parading of dark history will be able to speak to young people and evoke emotional and moral reactions across cultures.

This article concerns the societal history of potato knowledge in early modern Sweden. Focusing on the communication process, it analyses when, how, why, and which type of knowledge of the potato was communicated and ultimately experienced a societal breakthrough in early modern Sweden. The article shows that knowledge of the potato was transformed as it crossed social, spatial, and media boundaries. The breakthrough–which only came in 1749–50–was not the result of a linear, cumulative diffusion process dating from the initial knowledge intervention in the 1650s; instead, it was the result of a particular knowledge network, long devoted to promoting the potato, finally gaining influence over important knowledge institutions, thus making mass communication possible. In the 1720s and 1730s, this network had redefined the potato in the context of agriculture and especially in relation to the phenomenon of famine and crop failure. In the subsequent period, this revised knowledge became increasingly relevant to Swedish society, as the elite became ever more concerned with food security, population policy, and agricultural and fiscal reforms. Finally, following a severe crop failure in the 1740s, political support for a broad knowledge intervention was secured.

In 1975, Sweden extended voting rights in local elections to immigrants without Swedish citizenship (resident aliens). In this essay, motives behind the reform are analysed and it is argued that these were based on a wish to speed up the integration of immigrants rather than on normative ideas about the nature of democracy. In fact, the reform was seen as a part of the emerging Swedish integration policy of the 1970s. The discursive construction of ‘the immigrant’ was another important factor. Most immigrants at the time came from other Nordic countries, and politicians saw them as culturally similar to Swedes. However, this would change after the reform was enacted as Nordic labour immigration was superseded by non-European refugee immigration and the new asylum seekers were seen as more or less ‘different’ to Swedes. Domestic political arguments such as these, rather than philosophical arguments, shaped the outcome of the Swedish decisions regarding voting rights for resident aliens.

From the late twelfth century onwards, we observe a gradual shift from a horizontal to a vertical relationship between king and commoners in the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. This gradual transformation contributed to, and partly enabled, the growth of royal power in medieval Scandinavia. As elsewhere in Europe, kingship underwent a fundamental ideological change bringing about new forms of legitimisation of royal power according to which the king functioned as a rex iustus by divine grace. This elevated position placed the king above other members of the secular elite as he was glorified as God’s elected representative on earth. This chapter explores this process by analysing the preserved law material, and placing special emphasis on mutual obligations between king and commoners, considering the extent to which the king was bound by law, individual rights to pursue feuds, royal privileges, and crimes against the Crown. It shows, among other things, how the king was bound by the law in all the three Scandinavian countries up to the thirteenth century when differences started to appear. The kings in Denmark and Sweden were increasingly restricted by specific constitutional provisions, while the kings in Norway became less and less confined by law.

In the literature on Swedish labour market history, it is commonly accepted (Westerståhl 1945, Nycander 2008) that the Swedish state in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was unique in its abstention from anti-union, anti-strike policy. While in other European countries the conflict between employers and workers led to state repression of unions and strikes, the Swedish state was neutral, according to this account of Swedish exceptionalism. Thus, for Nycander (2008), the consensus-oriented ”Swedish model” which is typically dated to the 1930s (Korpi 1983) actually originates from the 1880s and 1890s. The leniency and social liberalism of the Swedish state is variously explained by farmer influence or influence of the social liberal intelligentsia. This paper questions the account of Swedish exceptionalism. It starts from two research questions: one, was the Swedish state indeed uniquely liberal vis-à-vis unionism and strikes, and two, if so, was this because of the political influence of farmers, the power of social liberal ideas, or something else? The paper maps labour market regulation (Master & Servant laws), restrictions of unionists’ speech, protection of strike-breakers, and employer attitudes to answer question one, and to answer question two, the politics behind the policies is discussed. The onclucsion is that (a) the uniqueness of the Swedish labour market regime is overblown, (b) the contributions of farmers to any liberalism in this regard were meagre and contradictory, and (c) that the urban liberal intelligentsia indeed did play a positive role for workers’ rights.

This book examines the security dynamics of the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific, concentrating upon an analysis and evaluation of the air power capabilities of the various powers active in the two regions. The volume is designed to help improve understanding of the heritage and contemporary challenges confronting the global community in the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific, as well as to illuminate the policies of the various powers involved in the affairs of these regions, and the military capabilities that are available in support of those policies. The 16 individual chapters examine both the traditional and the non-traditional threats that confront the various Indian Ocean and Western Pacific powers, and assess the roles played by land-based and naval, fixed-wing and rotary-wing, manned and unmanned aircraft, as well as by offensively and defensively capable ballistic and cruise missiles in addressing these challenges. In doing so, the various chapters analyse and evaluate the air power doctrine, capabilities, deployment patterns, and missions of the respective states. In addition, they assess the future issues, challenges, and responses involving air power as it, acting in concert with other military instruments, seeks to contribute to securing and promoting the interests of the state. Based on eight months' ethnographic work, including 46 in-depth interviews with migrants who had returned in Sweden, the article explores how national boundaries are both maintained and traversed in the construction of a "world citizen". It is argued that the women?s self-identification with a cosmopolitan ethos is structured by whiteness, nationality, and class that grants uninterrupted mobility and "worldliness". As symbolic bearers of the Swedish nation, national ideals act on the white women?s bodies internationally, in ways that both uphold and re-inscribe the nation into the global. Franz Brentano (1838–1917) was a leading philosopher and psychologist of the nineteenth century. Indeed, the impact of his scholarship was so great that he became synonymous with a school of thought and a new approach in scientific philosophy. The Brentano School stood against the Idealistic and post-Kantian German tradition and Brentano played a crucial role in the founding of Austrian philosophy. Sarnath Banerjee's second graphic novel The Barn Owl’s Wondrous Capers, a delightfully complex and remarkably multilayered work, is a significant contribution to Indian Graphic Narratives. This paper focuses on identifying and examining the layering strategies inherent in the text that endow it with its characteristic depth, complexity and density. The strategies identified include the exploitation of the multimodality of the comic format, the employment of multiple media, the incorporation of the legend of the Wandering Jew as the central trope, the playful treatment of history, a thematic layering of characters, and the utilization of intratextuality (textual echoes) and intertextuality. The paper further explores the way in which Calcutta, the primary setting of the novel, is rendered as a palimpsest-like entity where the colonial past is layered over by a post-colonial present. The novel’s emphasis upon a local readership with a global bent, leads to layers of reading based on readerly competence.

This article provides a description of the presence of qualitative research in Italian social and organisational psychology. The first section of the article identifies three major phases of qualitative methods and the factors that, from the 1990s, played a major role in their development: the legitimisation of qualitative research in sociology, the rising of theoretical perspectives expressing a critical stance toward the hegemonic quantitative and experimental approach of the discipline, and the demand for qualitative studies from public and private clients. In the second section, we present a review of the scientific articles published in the last five years. Our analysis shows that the health field stands out as having the greatest number of publications, both for social and organizational psychology; the absolute prevalence of the interview as a data collection method; and that Grounded theory, Discourse analysis, and Conversation analysis are the most cited references for data analysis. We discuss these results in relation to the set of rules that regulates the careers of researchers in Italy (and abroad), and to the only partial acceptance of qualitative research in Italian psychology.

Focusing on Western tourism behind the Iron Curtain, this chapter introduces the main research questions addressed in the volume: firstly, how and why Eastern Europe became a tourist destination for citizens of the West; secondly, what impact this had on the development of a tourism industry in the Eastern bloc; and thirdly, to what extent the experiences of Western tourists in Eastern Europe influenced mutual perceptions and Cold War stereotypes of “the other.” The chapter situates these questions in three debates in recent historiography: the histories of transnational tourism, the cultural Cold War, and mobilities in the supposedly backward and static societies in Eastern Europe.

George Boole emerged from the British tradition of the “New Analytic”, known for the view that the laws of logic are laws of thought. Logicians in the New Analytic tradition were influenced by the work of Immanuel Kant, and by the German logicians Wilhelm Traugott Krug and Wilhelm Esser, among others. In his 1854 work An Investigation of the Laws of Thought on Which are Founded the Mathematical Theories of Logic and Probabilities, Boole argues that the laws of thought acquire normative force when constrained to mathematical reasoning. Boole’s motivation is, first, to address issues in the foundations of mathematics, including the relationship between arithmetic and algebra, and the study and application of differential equations (Durand-Richard, van Evra, Panteki). Second, Boole intended to derive the laws of logic from the laws of the operation of the human mind, and to show that these laws were valid of algebra and of logic both, when applied to a restricted domain. Boole’s thorough and flexible work in these areas influenced the development of model theory (see Hodges, forthcoming), and has much in common with contemporary inferentialist approaches to logic (found in, e.g., Peregrin and Resnik).

In recent decades, a process of structural reduction of the weight of new generations in overall population (dejuvenation) has been observed. In Italy, this process started in the 1970s and accelerated in the 1990s. We present here its main consequences for Italian society and economy. The number of Italian young people (aged 0–29) was reduced from 24.5 million in 1951 (51.6% of the population) to 17.5 million in 2016 (28.8%). What is more, many young Italians are becoming a wasted resource and a social cost, facing high rates of unemployment, long economic dependence on the family of origin, renunciation of full achievement of their life plans, distrust of institutions, low social and political participation, and increasing emigration flow. We analyze, using multivariate models, the data of the Rapporto Giovani survey held by the Toniolo Institute in 2015. Our main finding is that generational disadvantages not only hamper economic growth but, in a familistic context, also exacerbate social inequalities.

The paper compares the American and Soviet transformations at Kabul University, Afghanistan, during the 1960s to the 1980s explained in terms of Americanisation and Sovietisation. Using new declassified documents from both American and former Soviet archives, the author reveals that both powers attempted to impose their rival models of university education in Afghanistan. However, resistance on the part of the Afghan university undermined both of their cultural influences, thus causing their policies of reform to eventually fail. The case of Kabul University demonstrates the inability of the superpowers to encourage the formation of pliable students and professors. Despite crucial transformations in the structure, administration apparatus, and content of disciplines, both superpowers were not able to change the traditions and values of professors and students. The university community has been proven to be the main cause for the success or failure of any reforms brought to a university by external powers.

This article argues for the need to take time into account when understanding land ownership in slums. It shows that this allows comprehending more accurately the place of land law and the specific forms that legal struggles over land take. Field research in a slum in Chittagong (in Bangladesh) reveals that while contemporary practices of ownership and transfer might appear to be informal and illegal, they are not only grounded in historical forms of legal land settlement, embedded in a long-standing court battle over legal ownership, but also the product of expectations related to the (legalised) future. Finally, urban planning, with a state-sponsored vision of the future of slums, further complicates the role of the law.

From 1905, their choice of setting up their plants caused a sudden increase in the population, which was followed by an equally sharp increase in the demand for lodgings and social infrastructures. The employers were forced to invest in building, at first with the intention of rapidly housing the workers, and then to proceed with a more rational planning of specific villages for the workforce. In the decades between the wars, Sesto San Giovanni was provided with a wide range of services in the fields of health care, schooling and even leisure. These policies permitted the creation of solid, close-knit company communities, founded on the intense participation of the workforce in the functioning of production activities. The social network, however, held together principally on the basis of the recognition of mutual obligations and responsibilities, rather than on mere subordination to paternalistic domination.

The aim of this book is to explore antagonism towards and acts of violence against English Bibles in England and Scotland (and, to a lesser degree, Ireland) from the English Civil war to the end of the eighteenth century. By focusing on violent gestures, which expressed resentment, rejection and hatred, I hope to further our understanding of what the Bible meant for early modern Christians. More specifically, I hope to show that religious identities in the period were not simply formed by pious reading, studying and contemplating Scripture, but rather, for some people, religious identities were shaped through antagonistic encounters with Scripture and the material book of the Bible.

This article examines This Side, That Side: Restorying Partition: Graphic Narratives from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, a 2013 anthology of graphic texts on the 1947 partition of the Indian subcontinent into Indian and Pakistan and the 1971 creation of Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan). Hillary Chute has argued that politically oriented graphic narratives confront the problem of representing history through an urgent visualizing of historical circumstance that disrupts and realigns the narrative elements. The narration of history is thus disrupted by the use of collage, montage, non-linear image and verbal organization of the page. The current article isolates four specific representational and narrative techniques through which This Side, That Side disrupts the narration of history of the subcontinent’s traumatic partitions.

In this collaborative article, we seek to unsettle the dominance of Western, reconstructionist accounts of Indigenous Australian sport history through reflections on our past research in the Queensland Aboriginal community of Cherbourg. That research focussed on a statue of legendary 1930s cricketer, Eddie Gilbert, and on sport exhibitions in Cherbourg's Ration Shed Museum. Here, we are less concerned with unveiling the ‘true’ account of Australian Aboriginal sporting history, or even a ‘true’ Indigenous representation of events. Rather, we are interested in analysing various perspectives in order to generate a more inclusive and complete account of Aboriginal sport history and the narrative implications of these for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australia. Central to this endeavour is the positioning of Indigenous knowledge and understanding at the centre of history-making. The article is in two sections: reflections on our past work from the perspectives of the researchers themselves and an Aboriginal academic colleague, followed by a discussion of how those experiences and reflections will inform our pending project on the 1950s and 1960s Cherbourg marching girls teams.
