Search

The minimum number of photons necessary for activating the sense of vision has been a topic of research for over a century. The ability of rod cells to sense a few photons has implications for understanding the fundamental capabilities of the human visual and nervous system and creating new vision technologies based on photonics. We investigate the fundamental metrological capabilities of different quantum states of light to probe the retina, which is modeled using a simple neural network. Stimulating the rod cells by Fock, coherent, and thermal states of light, and calculating the Cramer-Rao lower bound and Fisher information matrix for the signal produced by the ganglion cells in various conditions, we determine the volume of minimum error ellipsoid. Comparing the resulting ellipsoid volumes, we determine the metrological performance of different states of light for probing the retinal network. The results indicate that the thermal state yields the largest error ellipsoid volume and hence the worst metrological performance, and the Fock state yields the best performance for all parameters. We show that self-interacting vector field theories exhibit unphysical behavior even when they are not coupled to any external field. This means any theory featuring such vectors is in danger of being unphysical, an alarming prospect for many proposals in cosmology, gravity, high energy physics, and beyond. The problem arises when vector fields with healthy configurations naturally reach a point where time evolution is mathematically ill defined. We search for a new gauge boson Z' that couples only to heavy leptons and their corresponding neutrinos in the process e(+)e(-) -> Z'(-> mu(+)mu(-))mu(+)mu(-), using a 643 fb(-1) data sample collected by the Belle experiment at or near the gamma(1S; 2S; 3S; 4S; 5S) resonances at the KEKB collider. While previous searches for Z' performed a data-based estimation of the initial state radiation effect, our search for the Z' is the first to include effects due to initial state radiation in the signal simulated samples that were used in estimating the detection efficiency. No signal is observed in the Z' mass range of 0.212-10 GeV/c(2), and we set an upper limit on the coupling strength, g', constraining the possible Z' contribution to the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of the muon.

We investigate steady state entanglement (SSE) between two nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center defects in a diamond host on an ultrathin yttrium iron garnet (YIG) strip. We determine the dephasing and dissipative interactions of the qubits with the quanta of spin waves (magnon bath) in the YIG depending on the qubit positions on the strip. We show that the magnon's dephasing effect can be eliminated, and we can transform the bath into a multimode displaced thermal state using external magnetic fields. Entanglement dynamics of the qubits in such a displaced thermal bath have been analyzed by deriving and solving the master equation. An additional electric field is considered to engineer the magnon dispersion relation at the band edge to control the Markovian character of the open system dynamics. We determine the optimum geometrical parameters of the system of distant qubits and the YIG strip to get SSE. Furthermore, parameter regimes for which the shared displaced magnon bath can sustain significant SSE against the local dephasing and decoherence of NV centers to their nuclear spin environments have been determined. Along with SSE, we investigate the steady state coherence (SSC) and explain the physical mechanism of how delayed SSE appears following a rapid generation and sudden death of entanglement using the interplay of decoherence-free subspace states, system geometry, displacement of the thermal bath, and enhancement of the qubit dissipation near the magnon band edge. A nonmonotonic relation between bath coherence and SSE is found, and critical coherence for maximum SSE is determined. We prove that nested canalizing functions are the minimum-sensitivity Boolean functions for any activity ratio and we determine the functional form of this boundary which has a nontrivial fractal structure. We further observe that the majority of the gene regulatory functions found in known biological networks (submitted to the Cell Collective database) lie on the line of minimum sensitivity which paradoxically remains largely in the unstable regime. Our results provide a quantitative basis for the argument that an evolutionary preference for nested canalizing functions in gene regulation (e.g., for higher robustness) and for plasticity of gene activity are sufficient for concentration of such systems near the ""edge of chaos."", Koç University KUIS AI Center Fellowship Programme

We present and characterize the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal measured using the first three years of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y3) covering 4132 deg2. These galaxy-galaxy measurements are used in the DES Y3 3×2 pt cosmological analysis, which combines weak lensing and galaxy clustering information. We use two lens samples: a magnitude-limited sample and the redmagic sample, which span the redshift range ∼0.2-1 with 10.7 and 2.6 M galaxies, respectively. For the source catalog, we use the metacalibration shape sample, consisting of ≃100 M galaxies separated into four tomographic bins. Our galaxy-galaxy lensing estimator is the mean tangential shear, for which we obtain a total SNR of ∼148 for maglim (∼120 for redmagic), and ∼67 (∼55) after applying the scale cuts of 6 Mpc/h. Thus we reach percent-level statistical precision, which requires that our modeling and systematic-error control be of comparable accuracy. The tangential shear model used in the 3×2 pt cosmological analysis includes lens magnification, a five-parameter intrinsic alignment model, marginalization over a point mass to remove information from small scales and a linear galaxy bias model validated with higher-order terms. We explore the impact of these choices on the tangential shear observable and study the significance of effects not included in our model, such as reduced shear, source magnification, and source clustering. We also test the robustness of our measurements to various observational and systematics effects, such as the impact of observing conditions, lens-source clustering, random-point subtraction, scale-dependent metacalibration responses, point spread function residuals, and B modes. © 2022 American Physical Society.

We present a validation of the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) 3×2-point analysis choices by testing them on Buzzard2.0, a new suite of cosmological simulations that is tailored for the testing and validation of combined galaxy clustering and weak-lensing analyses. We show that the buzzard2.0 simulations accurately reproduce many important aspects of the DES Y3 data, including photometric redshift and magnitude distributions, and the relevant set of two-point clustering and weak-lensing statistics. We then show that our model for the 3×2-point data vector is accurate enough to recover the true cosmology in simulated surveys assuming the true redshift distributions for our source and lens samples, demonstrating robustness to uncertainties in the modeling of the nonlinear matter power spectrum, nonlinear galaxy bias, and higher-order lensing corrections. Additionally, we demonstrate for the first time that our photometric redshift calibration methodology, including information from photometry, spectroscopy, clustering cross-correlations, and galaxy-galaxy lensing ratios, is accurate enough to recover the true cosmology in simulated surveys in the presence of realistic photometric redshift uncertainties. © 2022 American Physical Society.

We present a search for dark photon dark matter that could couple to gravitational-wave interferometers using data from Advanced LIGO and Virgo's third observing run. To perform this analysis, we use two methods, one based on cross-correlation of the strain channels in the two nearly aligned LIGO detectors, and one that looks for excess power in the strain channels of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. The excess power method optimizes the Fourier transform coherence time as a function of frequency, to account for the expected signal width due to Doppler modulations. We do not find any evidence of dark photon dark matter with a mass between mA∼10-14-10-11 eV/c2, which corresponds to frequencies between 10-2000 Hz, and therefore provide upper limits on the square of the minimum coupling of dark photons to baryons, i.e., U(1)B dark matter. For the cross-correlation method, the best median constraint on the squared coupling is ∼1.31×10-47 at mA∼4.2×10-13 eV/c2; for the other analysis, the best constraint is ∼2.4×10-47 at mA∼5.7×10-13 eV/c2. These limits improve upon those obtained in direct dark matter detection experiments by a factor of ∼100 for mA∼[2-4]×10-13 eV/c2, and are, in absolute terms, the most stringent constraint so far in a large mass range mA∼2×10-13-8×10-12 eV/c2. © 2022 American Physical Society. Using the first three years of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), we use ratios of small-scale galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements around the same lens sample to constrain source redshift uncertainties, intrinsic alignments and other systematics or nuisance parameters of our model. Instead of using a simple geometric approach for the ratios as has been done in the past, we use the full modeling of the galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements, including the corresponding integration over the power spectrum and the contributions from intrinsic alignments and lens magnification. We perform extensive testing of the small-scale shear-ratio (SR) modeling by studying the impact of different effects such as the inclusion of baryonic physics, nonlinear biasing, halo occupation distribution descriptions and lens magnification, among others, and using realistic N-body simulations of the DES data. We validate the robustness of our constraints in the data by using two independent lens samples with different galaxy properties, and by deriving constraints using the corresponding large-scale ratios for which the modeling is simpler. The results applied to the DES Y3 data demonstrate how the ratios provide significant improvements in constraining power for several nuisance parameters in our model, especially on source redshift calibration and intrinsic alignments. For source redshifts, SR improves the constraints from the prior by up to 38% in some redshift bins. Such improvements, and especially the constraints it provides on intrinsic alignments, translate to tighter cosmological constraints when shear ratios are combined with cosmic shear and other 2pt functions. In particular, for the DES Y3 data, SR improves S8 constraints from cosmic shear by up to 31%, and for the full combination of probes (3×2pt) by up to 10%. The shear ratios presented in this work are used as an additional likelihood for cosmic shear, 2×2pt and the full 3×2pt in the fiducial DES Y3 cosmological analysis. ©

This, however, leads to an underabundant SIDM relic due to large annihilation rates into mediator particles, often requiring an extension of the simplest thermal or nonthermal relic generation mechanism. In this work, we consider a singlet-doublet fermion dark matter scenario where the singlet fermion with a light scalar mediator gives rise to the velocity-dependent dark matter self-interaction through a Yukawa type attractive potential. The doublet fermion, by virtue of its tiny mixing with the singlet, can be long-lived and can provide a nonthermal contribution to the singlet relic at late epochs, filling the deficit in the thermal relic of singlet SIDM. The light scalar mediator, due to its mixing with the standard model Higgs, paves the path for detecting such SIDM at terrestrial laboratories leading to constraints on model parameters from CRESST-III and XENON1T experiments. Enlarging the dark sector particles by two more singlet fermions and one scalar doublet, all odd under an unbroken Z2 symmetry can also explain nonzero neutrino mass in scotogenic fashion. © 2022 authors. Using the first three years of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), we use ratios of small-scale galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements around the same lens sample to constrain source redshift uncertainties, intrinsic alignments and other systematics or nuisance parameters of our model. Instead of using a simple geometric approach for the ratios as has been done in the past, we use the full modeling of the galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements, including the corresponding integration over the power spectrum and the contributions from intrinsic alignments and lens magnification. We perform extensive testing of the small-scale shear-ratio (SR) modeling by studying the impact of different effects such as the inclusion of baryonic physics, nonlinear biasing, halo occupation distribution descriptions and lens magnification, among others, and using realistic N-body simulations of the DES data. We validate the robustness of our constraints in the data by using two independent lens samples with different galaxy properties, and by deriving constraints using the corresponding large-scale ratios for which the modeling is simpler. The results applied to the DES Y3 data demonstrate how the ratios provide significant improvements in constraining power for several nuisance parameters in our model, especially on source redshift calibration and intrinsic alignments. For source redshifts, SR improves the constraints from the prior by up to 38% in some redshift bins. Such improvements, and especially the constraints it provides on intrinsic alignments, translate to tighter cosmological constraints when shear ratios are combined with cosmic shear and other 2pt functions. In particular, for the DES Y3 data, SR improves S8 constraints from cosmic shear by up to 31%, and for the full combination of probes (3×2pt) by up to 10%. The shear ratios presented in this work are used as an additional likelihood for cosmic shear, 2×2pt and the full 3×2pt in the fiducial DES Y3 cosmological analysis. ©

We search for a new gauge boson Z' that couples only to heavy leptons and their corresponding neutrinos in the process e(+)e(-) -> Z'(-> mu(+)mu(-))mu(+)mu(-), using a 643 fb(-1) data sample collected by the Belle experiment at or near the gamma(1S; 2S; 3S; 4S; 5S) resonances at the KEKB collider. While previous searches for Z' performed a data-based estimation of the initial state radiation effect, our search for the Z' is the first to include effects due to initial state radiation in the signal simulated samples that were used in estimating the detection efficiency. No signal is observed in the Z' mass range of 0.212-10 GeV/c(2), and we set an upper limit on the coupling strength, g', constraining the possible Z' contribution to the anomalous magnetic dipole moment of the muon.

Self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) with a light mediator is a promising scenario to alleviate the small-scale problems of the cold dark matter paradigm while being consistent with the latter at large scales, as suggested by astrophysical observations. This, however, leads to an underabundant SIDM relic due to large annihilation rates into mediator particles, often requiring an extension of the simplest thermal or nonthermal relic generation mechanism. In this work, we consider a singlet-doublet fermion dark matter scenario where the singlet fermion with a light scalar mediator gives rise to the velocity-dependent dark matter self-interaction through a Yukawa type attractive potential. The doublet fermion, by virtue of its tiny mixing with the singlet, can be long-lived and can provide a nonthermal contribution to the singlet relic at late epochs, filling the deficit in the thermal relic of singlet SIDM. We present a validation of the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) 3×2-point analysis choices by testing them on Buzzard2.0, a new suite of cosmological simulations that is tailored for the testing and validation of combined galaxy clustering and weak-lensing analyses. We show that the buzzard2.0 simulations accurately reproduce many important aspects of the DES Y3 data, including photometric redshift and magnitude distributions, and the relevant set of two-point clustering and weak-lensing statistics. We then show that our model for the 3×2-point data vector is accurate enough to recover the true cosmology in simulated surveys assuming the true redshift distributions for our source and lens samples, demonstrating robustness to uncertainties in the modeling of the nonlinear matter power spectrum, nonlinear galaxy bias, and higher-order lensing corrections. Additionally, we demonstrate for the first time that our photometric redshift calibration methodology, including information from photometry, spectroscopy, clustering cross-correlations, and galaxy-galaxy lensing ratios, is accurate enough to recover the true cosmology in simulated surveys in the presence of realistic photometric redshift uncertainties. © 2022 American Physical Society.

We investigate heat rectification in a two-qubit system coupled via the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We derive analytical expressions for heat currents and thermal rectification and provide possible physical mechanisms behind the observed results. We show that the anisotropy of DM interaction in itself is insufficient for heat rectification, and some other form of asymmetry is needed. We employ off-resonant qubits as the source of this asymmetry. We find the regime of parameters for higher rectification factors by examining the analytical expressions of rectification obtained from a global master equation solution. In addition, it is shown that the direction and quality of rectification can be controlled via various system parameters. Furthermore, we compare the influence of different orientations of the DM field anisotropy on the performance of heat rectification. Finally, we investigate the possible interplay between quantum correlations and the performance of the quantum thermal rectifier. The role of quantum coherence and correlations in heat flow and equilibration is investigated by exploring the Rayleigh's dynamical problem to equilibration in the quantum regime and following Onsager's approach to thermoelectricity. Specifically, we consider a qubit bombarded by two-qubit projectiles from a side. For arbitrary collision times and initial states, we develop the master equation for sequential and collective collisions. By deriving the Fokker-Planck equation out of the master equation, we identify the quantum version of the Rayleigh's heat conduction equation. We find that quantum discord and entanglement shared between the projectiles can contribute to genuine heat flow only when they are associated with so-called heat-exchange coherences. Analogous to Onsager's use of Rayleigh's principle of least dissipation of energy, we use the entropy production rate to identify the coherence current. Both coherence and heat flows can be written in the form of quantum Onsager relations, from which we predict coherent Peltier and coherent Seebeck effects. The effects can be optimized by the collision times and collectivity. We analyze Dark Energy Survey (DES) data to constrain a cosmological model where a subset of parameters - focusing on ωm - are split into versions associated with structure growth (e.g., ωmgrow) and expansion history (e.g., ωmgeo). Once the parameters have been specified for the ΛCDM cosmological model, which includes general relativity as a theory of gravity, it uniquely predicts the evolution of both geometry (distances) and the growth of structure over cosmic time. Any inconsistency between measurements of geometry and growth could therefore indicate a breakdown of that model. Our growth-geometry split approach therefore serves both as a (largely) model-independent test for beyond-ΛCDM physics, and as a means to characterize how DES observables provide cosmological information. We analyze the same multiprobe DES data as [Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 171301 (2019)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.122.171301]: DES Year 1 (Y1) galaxy clustering and weak lensing, which are sensitive to both growth and geometry, as well as Y1 BAO and Y3 supernovae, which probe geometry. We additionally include external geometric information from BOSS DR12 BAO and a compressed Planck 2015 likelihood, and external growth information from BOSS DR12 RSD. We find no significant disagreement with ωmgrow=ωmgeo. When DES and external data are analyzed separately, degeneracies with neutrino mass and intrinsic alignments limit our ability to measure ωmgrow, but combining DES with external data allows us to constrain both growth and geometric quantities. We also consider a parametrization where we split both ωm and w, but find that even our most constraining data combination is unable to separately constrain ωmgrow and wgrow. Relative to ΛCDM, splitting growth and geometry weakens bounds on σ8 but does not alter constraints on h.

We report branching fraction measurements of four decay modes of the Λc+ baryon, each of which includes an η meson and a Λ baryon in the final state, and all of which are measured relative to the Λc+→pK-π+ decay mode. The results are based on a 980 fb-1 data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. Two decays, Λc+→ης0π+ and Λ(1670)π+, are observed for the first time, while the measurements of the other decay modes, Λc+→ηΛπ+ and ης(1385)+, are more precise than those made previously. We obtain relative branching fractions of B(Λc+→ηΛπ+)/B(Λc+→pK-π+)=0.293±0.003±0.014, B(Λc+→ης0π+)/B(Λc+→pK-π+)=0.120±0.006±0.010, B(Λc+→Λ(1670)π+)×B(Λ(1670)→ηΛ)/B(Λc+→pK-π+)=(5.54±0.29±0.73)×10-2, and B(Λc+→ης(1385)+)/B(Λc+→pK-π+)=0.192±0.006±0.016. The mass and width of the Λ(1670) are also precisely determined to be 1674.3±0.8±4.9 MeV/c2 and 36.1±2.4±4.8 MeV, respectively, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

In the constrained sequential dominance (CSD), tri-bimaximal mixing (TBM) pattern in the neutrino sector has been explained, by proposing a certain Yukawa coupling structure for the right-handed neutrinos of the model. However, from the current experimental data it is known that the values of neutrino mixing angles are deviated from the TBM values. In order to explain this neutrino mixing, we first propose a phenomenological model where we consider Yukawa couplings which are modified from that of CSD. Essentially, we add small complex parameters to the Yukawa couplings of CSD. Using these modified Yukawa couplings, we demonstrate that neutrino mixing angles can deviate from their TBM values. We also construct a model, based on a flavor symmetry, in order to justify the modified form of Yukawa couplings of our work. © 2021 authors. Published by the American Physical Society.
