Equilibrium adsorption data is reported for activated carbons of interest as chemical agent sorbents. Measurements were made with nitrogen at low temperature and with dimethyl methylphosphonate, DMMP, at 25 and 42C. The sorbents studied include activated carbon fibers made from Fortisan and viscose rayon, some highly activated coconut shell charcoal, and a coal-base carbon. The nitrogen data was combined with mercury porosimeter measurements to give the total pore volume distributions from 10 to 100,000A radius. Both carbon fibers show a greater proportion of volume in pores less than 10A than the other carbons. Isosteric heats of adsorption of DMMP on the carbon fibers and the coal-base carbon are reported. It is suggested that the hysteresis in the DMMP systems is the result of the superposition of two phenomena, one the type seen in nitrogen adsorption entailing loop closure and the other an effect extending to lower pressures. Results of some desorption measurements with DMMP are discussed.

Equilibrium adsorption isotherms were determined experimentally at several temperatures for GB, GA, and GF on BPL activated carbon and a a super activated coconut carbon. Prediction of these isotherms using experimental DMMP, CC14 and benzene adsorption data and the Polanyi-Dubinin equation was not too successful because the data were not linear as required by the equation. Reasonably good isotherm predictions were, however, obtained using the experimental characteristic curves for DMMP and CC14 to define the adsorptive properties of the adsorbents. Affinity coefficients were determined experimentally since those calculated from parachors were not accurate. The physical and adsorptive properties of an activated carbon impregnated with siloxane resins were investigated. Such impregnation caused a large loss in surface area and adsorptive capacity, but did not selectively increase the hydrophobic properties of the carbon. Deposition of the resin apparently took place principally in the larger pores and resulted in blockage of a portion of micropores. Flow adsorption experiments were made on BPL carbon with DMMP vapor at a concentration of 100 micrograms/1 and at a velocity of 90 cm/sec. Breakthrough concentration curves, predicted by the theoretical methods of Wheeler and of Allen and Joyce, did not accurately correlate with the experimental points possibly because of the high flow rate used.

The objective was to find a good combination of varnish, zinc oxide, paper, and liquid developer for maximum tone steps and maximum density. The report covers the preparation of laboratory samples of electrophotographic papers and testing for various properties. The samples were evaluated for continuous tone capabilities using various black liquid developers. Adsorption and desorption isotherms of nitrogen at 77.7 K are reported for an activated viscose carbon fiber felt. The surface area is comparable to that of a previously studied activated carbon fiber made from Fortisan, but higher than that of a sample of coal base granular carbon, also previously studied (See AD-430 569). Pore distribution analysis shows that the viscose felt has much less volume in pores in the 40-1000A radius range than the others. Adsorption and desorption isotherms of dimethyl methylphosphonate, DMMP, are reported for 25 C for all three sorbents mentioned and for 35 C for the viscose felt. Total micropore volumes determined from the nitrogen and DMMP isotherms are reported for the three sorbents discussed. Smaller values are obtained with DMMP in all cases suggesting that screening of DMMP from certain pores, accessible to the smaller nitrogen molecule, is taking place. Apparatus for the measurement of rates of adsorption and desorption at constant pressure is described. It is based on the Cahn electrobalance. Diffraction measurements on the Fortisan carbon fiber indicate that it is essentially amorphous to X-rays. An oxygen surface group determination is reported for the Fortisan carbon felt. (Author)

Apparatus for the study of equilibrium gas adsorption on solids by both volumetric and gravimetric means is described, including pressure measuring devices which allow measurements with adsorbates having a wide range of volalilities. Adsorption and desorption isotherms of nitrogen at low temperatures are reported on an activated carbon fiber and on a coal-based granular carbon. The adsorption isotherm of dimethyl methylphosphonate, DMMP, on an activated carbon fiber at 25 C in the range of 0-0.8 mm Hg pressure is reported. Methods are described for the chemical characterization of surface oxygen complexes on activated carbon according to functional group. (Author)
