John R. Milton's December 31, 1968 letter to Frederick Manfred is one in a series of correspondence concerning the editing of Manfred's piece “Conversations.” After explaining the time-sensitive nature of the circumstances surrounding the publication of “Conversations” Milton explains that, because Manfred had denied him permission, the manuscript had been removed. Milton rebuts comments Manfred made in earlier letters regarding the nature of his editing. He also explains that publishing “Conversations” might have to be abandoned unless Manfred accepts corrections (Manfred was averse to most outside editing and preferred to edit his own writing). While this letter would not be the conclusion of this argument, Milton ends 1968 by ignoring Manfred’s previous insults because, "I still would rather be your friend than win an argument with you.", This is a part of the larger John R. Milton collection available at the Center for Western Studies. The John R. Milton Collection contains the papers of John R. Milton, the longtime editor of the SOUTH DAKOTA REVIEW (SDR), professor of English at the University of South Dakota, and author of many books, short stories, essays, reviews, and poems. Born in Anoka, MN in 1924, Milton received his bachelor's degree and master's degree from the University of Minnesota, and his Ph.D. from the University of Denver. In 1946, Milton married his high school sweetheart, Lynn Hinderlie; they had one daughter, Nanci. John Milton began donating his materials to the Center for Western Studies in 1982, and did so until his death in 1995. His collection contains correspondence, SDR issue files, and drafts of information regarding many books, short stories and poems he has written and published. His collection also contains transcripts of interviews with noted authors such as Frederick Manfred and Frank Waters, some subject specific files, and an assortment of works collect by and given to Milton by other writers. Also contained in the collection are personal files, photographs taken by Milton, interview recordings, various teaching files, various notes and research material.

John Milton writes to Walter Clark on July 31, 1967 to ask him to join the growing number of Western American authors interviewed for the educational television series Milton is creating. The project would involve an on-campus taping, however Milton states that his principal interested is in Clark's general interest and thoughts on the project., This is a part of the larger John R. The Arkansas Pioneer Branch of the National League of American Pen Women records contain meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records, brochures, publications clippings, press coverage, and photographs that document the day-to-day operations, Pioneer Branch events and contests, the Arkansas Writers’ Conference, and member achievements. There is also a video on the history of St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock.; News clippings report on members, activities, events, and published essays, poems and articles by the Pen Women. Proceedings of the meetings are well-documented in the minutes, complete with chairman changes and elections, membership business, by-law discussions, treasury statements, achievements, poetry readings, and musical programming. The Pen Women hosted many prominent speakers and guests, including award-winning authors, politicians, musicians, publishers, and poets.

This print has been taped down to paper, the left side of the print is damaged. Georgia College, in Milledgeville, holds the original negative within the Eberhart Studio Collection at the archives and special collections.

O'Connor, mother of the late author Flannery O'Connor of Milledgeville, presents one of her daughter's peacocks to Stone Mountain Park during part of ceremonies that included presentation of a plaque honoring the author's life and work. Miss O'Connor was fond of watching peacocks and this was one of two from her flock given to the park. Next Sunday a collection of Miss O'Connor's works will be presented to Georgia College, Milledgeville, which the author attended. (Staff photo -- Bud Skinner)."
