Miscellaneous papers, 7 items, of John S. Bagnall, who fought at the Battle of New Market. Included are two letters (1921) from Eliza Clinedinst Crim, the New Market resident who came to the assistance of wounded cadets after the Battle of New Market; the letter of April 20 mentions Cadet Moses Ezekiel caring for the mortally wounded Cadet Thomas Jefferson. Also includes a VMI grade report (1862); two receipts for payment of tuition & diploma; and an envelope containing 2 of Bagnall's calling cards.

The papers consist of five letters (1848-1854) written by Giles Gunn, a native of Connecticut, while he was a schoolteacher in Lexington, Rockbridge County, Virginia. The letters, addressed primarily to his sister Mary (living at the Gunn home in Washington, Litchfield County, Connecticut), include discussions of interesting local events as well as references to family. Topics include commencement at the Virginia Military Institute; a detailed description of his school and his methods of instruction; a description of the communion service at a local church, including references to black communicants; references to the townspeople's reaction to a rumored slave insurrection; and a discussion of the murder of VMI Cadet Thomas Blackburn.

Only selected documents from the collection have been digitized and are available online here. The following description pertains to the entire collection. The bulk of the papers consists of miscellaneous items dating from Perkinson's the World War I service with the HQ, 30th Division, as an aide-de-camp to General S. L. Faison. Documents include letters of recommendation, a special order, a battlefield map, and a leave of absence. Also included are documents and photos dating from his cadetship and later life.

The papers consist of 26 letters, bulk 1862-1865, from Mortimer Johnson and his son Porter to members of their immediate family. The Johnson family, originally from West Virginia, moved to Brownsburg in Rockbridge County, Virginia, although they maintained close ties to their former home. Topics in Mortimer's letters include civilian life during the war; the animosity between Union and Confederate sympathizers in West Virginia (the letter of April 28, 1863 discusses the Union loyalty of Stonewall Jackson's sister, Laura Jackson Arnold); the Battle of Fredericksburg and its aftermath (Dec 1862); the Jones- Imboden Raid (West Virginia, April 1863). Porter's letters include a discussion of VMI cadet life at the Alms House in Richmond, Virginia, where the Corps was headquartered during the last months of the war.

Correspondence (1831-1865, bulk 1831-1855; 7 items) of James M. Mason, United States legislator and Confederate diplomat. The collection consists of miscellaneous letters concerning personal financial matters and other personal business; one letter to Mr. Dallas, dated August 11, 1855, relates to presidential politics. Letter to "My dear Col." written from London on May 16, 1865, commenting on situation in the South after defeat.

Four Civil War era letters concerning Henkel and Kagey families of New Market, Virginia. Jan.2, 1863, Confederate soldier David Henkel (Price's Light Artillery) to his brother; discusses wounding of Capt. George W. Wooding; winter quarters. June 19, 1863, David to brother; on march to Maryland; needs money. 1863 Nov. 7, Mary Kagey of New Market to her brother David Kagey, a student at the University of Virginia; discusses family news, domestic matters, news of soldiers capture. Jan. 15, 1864, Abram Henkel to David Kagey; discusses news from family and friends; yankees at Martinsburg & Winchester; substitutes in army. 2 undated documents signed by Solon P. C. Henkel, M.D. for reimbursement for goods taken from his farm by Union soldiers and for medical supplies used while he cared for Union soldiers at the Federal hospital in New Market.

Two items. One telegram, dated May 16, 1864, sent by Cadet William N. Radford to his family after the Battle of New Market. Radford states that "I escaped unhurt in the fight yesterday.." One holograph note, May 15, 1864, from Cadet William M. Chalmers to his mother; states that he is unhurt after the battle. Chalmers later married Radford's sister.

The collection consists of twelve items. Included are letters (8 items), 1862-1864, addressed to Cadet Patrick H. Morgan. Those from his father (James B. Morgan of Currituck, Co. NC) contain news of Civil War civilian and home life Currituck Co., North Carolina, 1863-1864. Specific topics include enemy raids for food and supplies, diptheria, an uncle's death in battle, and the hardships of war. Other letters are from family friends and cousin John B. Wiginton. Also included are Cadet Morgan's written excuses (4 items) to the VMI Commandant for various infractions, April - May 1863.

66 mounted paste papers, approximately 50 blank mounting papers in envelope (with ink inscription along bottom edge: "R.H.M. paste paper mounts"), 1 paste paper 32 x 24 cm folded to 24 x 16 cm, with pencil inscription on back "Design with Troy-weight symbols by R.H. Middleton 1950 for Abbott Laboratories," and two 15 x 11 cm envelopes, each filled with approximately 30 paste papers, both labeled "R.H. Middleton paste papers 1944."

The report investigates the possibilities of using carbon paper interleaved waste. Several methods of waste utilization that are related to this type of waste were discovered and a review of them is given. The results of a survey directed toward form manufacturers and waste paper users are included but do not render any unique results. Experimental techniques for treating the waste were developed and documented. This research did not result in a definite solution to the problem but it does meet the need for a basic introduction to the many possible means of its solution. (Modified author abstract)

The Randall and Beirne papers consist primarily of letters to and from members of the Randall and Beirne families, including Daniel Randall, his daughter Rosamond Randall Beirne, her husband Francis Foulke Beirne. The Randalls and Beirnes corresponded with a number of well known individuals including Franklin D. Roosevelt, H.L. Mencken, Louis Adamic, Mamie Eisenhower, and Jacqueline Kennedy, among others. The basic question is whether or not US paper industry exports (paper, paperboard, and pulp) to Europe can continue to expand through the next decade, and be a growing positive influence on the US balance of trade. Economic, governmental, and applicable diplomatic factors were studied. (Modified author abstract)

The purpose of this study was to explore a method for developing production standards for a low-production fourdrinier paper machine producing a wide range of specialty paper types. The approach was based primarily on noted historical deviations of actual production from production indicated from the use of formulas or nomographs describing the theoretical production possible. Using FORTRAN IV on an IBM 360, a program capable of accepting and analyzing historical data in order to develop production standards was developed. The program is also capable of comparing production runs on a particular day with the historical standards. A similar approach could be applied in both specialty mills and in high-production mills using the fourdrinier paper machine. The production standards developed from such a method would provide a basis for standard cost accounting by product and by production run, would permit evaluation of changes in the machine, and would provide a means to evaluate machine and crew performances. Quality control chart methods incorporated in the computer program would also aid in pointing out production runs with extreme deviations from the historical standards of production in order that checks could be made for assignable causes.

Benjamin Disraeli, who served in Parliament for more than forty years and twice held each of the posts of Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer, was indisputably one of the most colorful and influential figures in nineteenth-century British history. Disraeli was also a literary craftsman who wrote several novels reflecting the social and political climate of his times, and he corresponded extensively and engagingly with a wide circle of persons of varying eminence. His speeches in Parliament and on public platforms underscored his political and phrasemaking talents. Syracuse University Library has an exceptional collection of primary source materials on Disraeli in microreproduced form, the only positive microfilm copy of the Disraeli Papers outside of England. The papers are basic to serious research efforts undertaken on any or all phases of his multifaceted career, ranging from statesman to litterateur.

The papers in this report were prepared for presentation at the Fifth World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (5WCEE) and will, in due course, appear in the Proceedings of that conference. Because of requests for copies of the papers, they have been printed in this Caltech report form.

Canalmen and workmen of the paper company can be seen on and next to the boat. The arm of a crane intrudes into the picture at the upper right, dangling a huge roll of paper. There is one unidentified building in the background.

To determine why paper honeycomb pads, in which variables such as paper weight, cell size, cell shape, and glue line widths are ostensibly constant, sometimes vary rather widely in crushing strength, thirty one precisely controlled samples were fabricated in the laboratory and crushed under dynamic loading. Results of these tests are compared in variation with corresponding results of tests of commercial honeycomb. It appears that crushing failure is governed by random processes having to do with buckling patterns, and blowout. Studies are also reported of the air pressure developed in the cells during crushing, the effect on crushing strength of specimen size and the ratio of crushing area to total specimen area, and the crushing strength at very low crushing rates.

This is an interim report describing in detail two mill runs and the associated laboratory work on the effects of replacing esparto with yucca fiber in the Navy H-60 filter paper. It is shown that a satisfactory filter paper can be manufactured using the domestic yucca fiber. The presence of rayon in the filter paper is shown to be objectionable. The effect of "flexing" the filter paper requires further study.
