Artificial Intelligence in higher education (AIED) is becoming a more important research area with increasing developments and application of AI within the wider society. However, as yet AI based tools have not been widely adopted in higher education. As a result there is a lack of sound evidence available on the pedagogical impact of AI for learning and teaching. This conceptual paper thus seeks to bridge the gap and addresses the following question: is artificial intelligence really the new big thing that will revolutionise learning and teaching in higher education? Adopting the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) framework and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) as the theoretical foundations, we argue that Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, at least in their current state of development, do not afford any real new advances for pedagogy in higher education. This is mainly because there does not seem to be valid evidence as to how the use of AI technologies and applications has helped students improve learning, and/or helped tutors make effective pedagogical changes. In addition, the pedagogical affordances of AI have not yet been clearly defined. The challenges that the higher education sector is currently experiencing relating to AI adoption are discussed at three hierarchical levels, namely national, institutional and personal levels. The paper ends with recommendations with regard to accelerating AI use in universities. This includes developing dedicated AI adoption strategies at the institutional level, updating the existing technology infrastructure and up-skilling academic tutors for AI.

If the modern office produces and is managed through written documents or files, as Max Weber famously argued in his work on bureaucracy, then so too does the office – and increasingly the private citizen – destroy them. Enter the lowly paper shredder, a machine that proliferates waste and serves as the repository of carefully guarded secrets and confidential records, even as it is designed to eliminate the dregs of bureaucratic culture. Until recently, in the United States as elsewhere, paper was the medium of official state law. The 20th-century rise of the paper shredder and its paper trail, as we shall see, thus reveals the material, cultural and economic entanglement of written law with destruction and consumption, security, and privacy, not only in the U.S., it turns out, but worldwide. The trail leads from formal recognition of the paper shredder in a 1909 U.S. patent to its actual manufacture and development as a business machine in Germany twenty-five or so years later, from the shredder’s role in defining political moments to its appearance in cartoons that confuse it with fax machines or legal counsel, and from regulations governing the disposition of records to industrywide ‘certificates of destruction’ that ensure against the dangers of snoopy dumpster divers.

Focusing on Delgamuukw v. British Columbia, this paper argues that it is not difficult, if one takes a fair look at Gitxsan and Wet’suwet’en governance, to see legal ways of knowing drawn from specific materials. The materials are different from the ones western law draws on, but that does not render them less legitimately legal. To get beyond prejudices about what counts as law, settler courts may have to begin by admitting that indigenous oral narratives, songs, totem poles and other aspects of material culture are legal materials. Then those who work in those courts would have to interrogate that new knowledge, and perhaps learn that in getting there by that method they ended up bringing colonialism with them. Instead, perhaps we can ask how someone trained as a lawyer in a textual tradition might learn to see that a song, a story, a ceremonial robe, or a totem pole, could be law or legal title rather than evidence of those things. After all, Canadian jurisdiction is as much a story as anything brought forward by the elders who testified in this case. A materialist approach cannot guarantee a better parsing of the problems of communication here, but it may shine a brighter light on what counts as jurisdiction and thus make it more difficult to accept without question that Canada’s courts have the right to decide a case like this.

The soluble paper in alkaline solution played the role of a sacrificial electron donor by reacting with hydroxyl radicals generated from hole oxidation with OH−. These findings provide an inexpensive route to drive aqueous proton reduction to hydrogen through waste biomass oxidation.

Herein, a facile strategy is proposed for embedding the MOFs, e.g., ZIF-67 and MIL-88 into polyacrylonitrile fibers, which is further used as a template to build a 3D interconnected conductive carbon necklace paper. Owing to the unique structure features of good electric conductivity, interconnected frameworks, electroactive reservoir, and dual dopants, the obtained flexible electrodes with no additives exhibit high specific capacities, good rate capability, and prolonged cycling stability. The hollow dodecahedral ZIF-67 derived carbon necklace paper delivers a high specific capacity of 1200 mAh g -1 and superior stability of more than 400 cycles without capacity decay. Moreover, the spindle-like MIL-88 derived carbon necklace paper shows a high reversible capacity of 980 mAh g -1 . Their unique 3D interconnected structure and outstanding electrochemical performance pave the way for extending the MOF-based interweaving materials toward potential applications in portable and wearable electronic devices.

However, the poor electric/ionic conductivity of sulfur limits the practical use of sulfur in an electrode. The main problem is the high solubility of long-chain polysulfides, which are the intermediates of the electrochemical processes in the liquid electrolyte. The dissolved polysulfide ions shuttle between the cathode and anode, thus causing precipitation of insulating Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S on the surface of the electrode. The unavoidable phenomenon results in loss of active materials and fast capacity fading. In this regard, we show one simple method to prepare free-standing paper electrode used as cathode material for lithium sulfur batteries. Binder-free graphene-polypyrrole (PPy)/S-graphene (G-PPy/S-G) paper-like sandwich structural electrode was prepared by using the vacuum filtration method. In this structure, the unique graphene layers of sandwich-like framework not only serve as a conductive film, but also effectively block the diffusion of polysulfides, leading to suppression of the shuttle effect and low self-discharge behaviour. In addition, the middle layer, the PPy nanofibers can limit the diffusion of dissolved polysulfides due to the special bond with sulfur, and furthermore maintain the structural stability of the paper electrode because the nanofibers can serve as elastic springs to accommodate the huge volume changes in charging-discharging processes. When tested as cathode for Li-S batteries, the as-prepared sample G-PPy/S-G exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. We believe that our strategy could provide a useful pathway towards commercial utilizing of sulfur.

This paper provides a summary of information gathered by the Intellectual Disability Behaviour Support Program (IDBS), University of New South Wales (UNSW, Sydney). The paper is designed to inform and provide an opportunity for reflection on the provision of behaviour support for people with intellectual and cognitive disability in the disability services future in Australia. This paper: 1. Introduces a conceptualisation that encourages person-centred holistic understanding of behaviour support needs and behaviour support practices; 2. Identifies issues relevant to the provision of behaviour support in an individualised and marketised disability service future; 3. Proposes the foundational building blocks for a sustained sector-wide approach to enhancing quality, efficacy, and accountability in behaviour support practice as a support for people with disability and complex support needs.

Lithium sulfur batteries have been regarded as next-generation battery technology due to its high energy density, environmental benignity and abundance. However, the poor electric/ionic conductivity of sulfur limits the practical use of sulfur in an electrode. The main problem is the high solubility of long-chain polysulfides, which are the intermediates of the electrochemical processes in the liquid electrolyte. The dissolved polysulfide ions shuttle between the cathode and anode, thus causing precipitation of insulating Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S on the surface of the electrode. The unavoidable phenomenon results in loss of active materials and fast capacity fading. In this regard, we show one simple method to prepare free-standing paper electrode used as cathode material for lithium sulfur batteries. Binder-free graphene-polypyrrole (PPy)/S-graphene (G-PPy/S-G) paper-like sandwich structural electrode was prepared by using the vacuum filtration method. In this structure, the unique graphene layers of sandwich-like framework not only serve as a conductive film, but also effectively block the diffusion of polysulfides, leading to suppression of the shuttle effect and low self-discharge behaviour. Primary schools are the foundational stages in the education system – an extensive seven-year period that offers both growth and development to students. During this time, an individual’s wellbeing, that is, the way an individual feels, interacts, moves, mentally functions and personally devotes themselves, is in constant evolution (DEC NSW, 2015). Healthy wellbeing is dependent on constant interaction with positive change, however, environmental factors may potentially pose negative distress, causing personal wellbeing to enter a state of imbalance (DEC NSW, 2015). This paper explains how promoting ‘mindfulness’ in primary school education, could provide a means of reducing the prevalence of psychosocial stress and enhancing overall performance at school. The practicality of this article is supported with age-related developmental and ethical considerations associated with implementing mindfulness interventions, along with a discussion of research findings.

The Abbott Government announced its White Paper review of the Australian Federation on June 28, 2014. Set against this backdrop, discussions of the future of Australian local government may provoke an assumption that its role will be cruelled. However, reflection suggests that such an assumption is misplaced. Objective: The literature reports nursing academics avoid manikin-based simulation because they feel intimidated by the technology. With that in mind we sought to design a manikin-based simulation learning experience for nursing students, with low technological burden for those nursing academics expected to work with the technology. Setting: A multi-campus Australian regional university school of nursing. Subjects Nursing academics with little or no experience in manikin-based simulation. Primary argument: Nursing academics are encouraged to use manikins in their clinical teaching but little has been done to address their fears and concerns around the technology. We argue that taking simple steps to decrease the technological burden will help to encourage nursing academics uptake of manikin-based simulations, as a favoured pedagogy in clinical teaching. Conclusion: The technological burden around manikin-based simulation was reduced by: (1) choosing medium level fidelity simulations, (2) designing simulations where students operate the equipment, (3) preparing participants for the SLE with a pre-brief video and instruction handouts, (4) offering academics roles as observers, and (5) providing on-site technological support. Nursing academics were encouraged by the process and more inclined to engage with manikin simulations. Designing simulations that address nursing academics' fears and concerns around simulation technology encourages simulation uptake.

The implementation of electronic systems in aged care homes was anticipated to improve documentation quality. Standardized nursing terminologies, developed to improve communication and advance the nursing profession, are not required in aged care practice. The language used by nurses in the nursing care plan and the effect of the electronic system on documentation quality in residential aged care need to be investigated. Purpose: To describe documentation practice for the nursing care plan in Australian residential aged care homes and to compare the quantity and quality of documentation in paper-based and electronic nursing care plans. Methods: A nursing documentation audit was conducted in seven residential aged care homes in Australia. One hundred and eleven paper-based and 194 electronic nursing care plans, conveniently selected, were reviewed. The quantity of documentation in a care plan was determined by the number of phrases describing a resident problem and the number of goals and interventions. The quality of documentation was measured using 16 relevant questions in an instrument developed for the study. Results: There was a tendency to omit 'nursing problem' or 'nursing diagnosis' in the nursing process by changing these terms (used in the paper-based care plan) to 'observation' in the electronic version. The electronic nursing care plan documented more signs and symptoms of resident problems and evaluation of care than the paper-based format (48.30 vs. 47.34 out of 60, P <. 0.01), but had a lower total mean quality score.
