Kirkland was known in the Akron area for making significant contributions toward helping the handicapped. Kirkland enrolled in a course in Braille transcription at The University of Akron in 1967 so that she could learn to copy books for the blind and later taught classes in transcription at the Red Cross headquarters. She also volunteered in the classroom for visually handicapped children at Crouse Elementary School.

Hawkins, pastor of Greater Bethel Baptist Church of Akron, Ohio behind the pulpit delivering his weekly Sunday evening sermon to his congregation and across the airwaves of WAKR, a local commercial radio station. Hawkins was known throughout the Akron area for being a leader in his church and the community. In the mid-1960s he initiated a program entitled SHARE (Self-Help and Re-Education) to inspire African Americans to improve their position in the community. The program provided emergency service to indigent Akronites and jobs for skilled and non-skilled members of the area.

The pallbearers can be seen in the foreground carrying his coffin and the North Hill Viaduct bridge can be seen in the background. Dykes passed away in Detroit where he was seeking medical treatment. Dykes was one of Akron's oldest ministers in terms of service to his congregation and oversaw the growth of the church from a small unorganized group to one of Akron's largest and most progressive religious congregations in Akron. Main St. by S. Howard St. in Akron, Ohio. Mr. Mitchell was an Insurance Broker who represented top quality companies specializing in all risk automobile policies. The Mitchell Agency offered hospitalization, life, sick, accident and fire insurance. A similar image to this appears on page 16 of the June 1964 edition of the Akronite, an African-American newspaper published in Akron.

One black and white photographic print of Mapp's Service Station at 1261 Copley Road at the corner of Roslyn Avenue in Akron, Ohio. The gas station, a Texaco-affiliated service station, was owned by Charles W. Mapp of Akron, who also owned and operated Mapp's Service Station at 1210 Diagonal Road. Opened in August of 1963, the station included the latest and most modern test equipment and tools for servicing and repairing all makes and models of automobiles with special emphasis on automatic transmissions. The station also offered tire and battery service, brake adjustments, motor tune up, and emergency road service. A similar image appears under the headline "Charles W. Mapp Opens Second West Side Service Station" on the front page of the August 31, 1963 edition of the "Akronite,"an African-American newspaper published in Akron.

One member is handing over a gavel to another member. Frontiers International, Incorporated was founded in Columbus, Ohio in 1936 by Nimrod B. Allen, a former Executive Director of the Akron YMCA and a leader in the African-American community. The primary purpose of the organization was to provide an outlet and opportunity for African-American males to collectively give service to their communities through a civic, service leadership organization that did not discriminate against them.

One black and white photographic print of Vivian Riggins, a fourth grade social science studies teacher of 1117 Johnland Ave. in Akron, Ohio posing outside Crouse School in Akron with a group of students known as the Crouse Commissioners. The Crouse Commissioners consisted of students from third and fourth grades of block D of the departmentalized section of Crouse School. The children served as guides for pre-school children and their parents on kindergarten Round-up-day and promoted good citizenship at school and throughout the community year round. The group of sixty students was supervised by Riggins, who organized the group in 1964. In addition to teacher, Riggins was a school counselor, civic leader, community volunteer, and mentor to hundreds of former students. She served on the board of trustees of a number of community organizations including the Akron Community Service Center and Urban League, the Akron Branch of the NAACP, and Family Services. She also was an active member of the American Red Cross, United Way, and Council of Negro Women.
