This article focuses on linguistic education and languageteaching in Brazil in the last decades. Firstly, it approaches thefact that some data about Brazilian population and linguisticeducation can throw light on some aspects of the topic inquestion. Afterwards, the article relates such data to theoreticaland methodological issues, as they appear in documents andcurriculum standards from recent years. In order to do this, thediscussion is based on authors from the French DiscourseAnalysis School and the Bakhtin Circle. Finally, the articlepoints to the formative role of foreign language in the contextof basic education and human formation in general, throughthe notions of intersubjectivity and interculturality.
