We present the first results of a wide solid angle, moderately deep Chandra survey of the Lockman Hole North West Region. Our 9 ACIS-I fields cover an effective solid angle of 0.33 sq deg and reach a depth of 3 x 10(exp -16) erg/sq cm/s in the 0.4-2 keV band, and 3 x 10(exp -15) erg/sq cm/s in the 2-8 keV band. The best fit logN-logS for the entire field, the largest contiguous Chandra field yet observed, matches well onto that of the Chandra Deep Field North. This indicates that over 90% of the 2-8 keV X-ray background is resolved into point sources. We show that the full range of the 'cosmic variance' previously seen in different Chandra fields can be reproduced in a small region of the sky. The count-in-cells analysis shows that the 2-10 keV band sources have much larger angular correlation scale than that of the 0.4-2 keV band. We found the large difference is likely to be caused by a stronger spatial correlation in the hard band sources rather than the redshift effect.

Ground-based high spatial resolution (FWHM <0.3-0.8) optical and near-infrared imaging at BIHK'(0.4 - 2.2 mu m) is presented for a complete sample of optically selected Palomar-Green QSOs which have infrared excesses at least as great as those of warm AGN-like ultraluminous infrared galaxies.

The nuclear activity in many of the most powerful radio galaxies is believed to be triggered by galaxy-galaxy mergers.

We present high-quality spectra covering the K window at a resolving power of 340 for a sample of 13 ultraluminous (L(sub IR) approximately greater than 10(exp 12) solar luminosity) infrared-selected galaxies, and line fluxes for a comparison sample of 24 lower luminosity galaxies. The 2 micrometers spectra of 10 of the ultraluminous galaxies are characterized by emission and absorption features commonly associated with stars and star formation; two others have the red power-law spectra and Br gamma line widths of Seyfert 1 galaxies; the final galaxy has strong emission from hot dust. We have found no broad-line active nuclei not already known from optical observations, despite the fact that the extinction at 2 micrometers is 1/10 that at optical wavelengths; any putative Seyfert 1 nuclei must be deeply buried. Powerful continua and emission lines from H2 and Br gamma are detected in all the ultraluminous galaxies. Comparing the H2 1-0 S(1), Br gamma, and 2 micrometers and far-infrared luminosities to those of the lower luminosity galaxies yields several major results. First, the dereddened Br gamma emission, relative to the far-infrared luminosity is significantly depressed in the ultraluminous sample, when compared to the lower luminosity galaxies. Five of the ultraluminous galaxies have L(sub Br gamma)L(sub IR) ratios lower than for any of the comparison objects. Second, the H2 1-0 S(1) luminosity is also responsible, directly or indirectly, for producing the excited H2, and that the H2 apparently comes from optically thin regions in both classes of objects. Third, eight of the 13 ultraluminous systems have lower 2 micrometers/far-infrared luminosity ratios than any of the lower luminosity galaxies, and five of these are the galaxies also deficient in Br gamma. These three findings may be understood if the the H2, Br gamma, and 2 mircometers continua in the ultraluminous galaxies arise from spatially distinct regions, with the continuum and Br gamma largely coming from volumes optically thick even at 2 micrometers, and obscured in such a fashion that the extinctions measured using optical spectroscopy do not properly measure the true optical depths. If this is the case, then even near-infrared spectroscopy may be unable to exclude the presence of undetected powerful active galactive nuclei in the ultraluminous galaxies.

Upper limits for the molecular gas mass of 11 high redshift (1.

New measurements of the (12)CO (1-0) and (12)CO (3-2) line emission are presented for the nuclei of seven nearby starburst galaxies selected from a complete sample of 21 nearby starburst galaxies for which the nuclear star formation rates are measured to be comparable to the archetype starburst galaxies M82 and NGC 253. The new observations capitalize on the coincidence between the beam size of the 45 m Nobeyama telescope at 115 GHz and that of the 15 m James Clerk Maxwell Telescope at 345 GHz to measure the value of the (12)CO (3-2)/(1-0) emission line ratio in a 15 sec (less than or equal to 2.5 kpc) diameter region centered on the nuclear starburst. In principle, the (12)CO (3-2)/(1-0) emission line ratio provides a measure of temperature and optical depth for the (12)CO gas. The error weighted mean value of the (12)CO (3-2)/(1-0) emission line ratio measured for the seven starburst galaxy nuclei is -0.64 +/- 0.06. The (12)CO (3-2)/(1-0) emission line ratio measured for the starburst galaxy nuclei is significantly higher than the average value measured for molecular gas in the disk of the Galaxy, implying warmer temperatures for the molecular gas in starburst galaxy nuclei. On the other hand, the (12)CO (3-2)/(1-0) emission line ratio measured for the starburst galaxy nuclei is not as high as would be expected if the molecular gas were hot, greater than 20 K, and optically thin, tau much less than 1. The total mass of molecular gas contained within the central 1.2-2.8 kpc diameter region of the starburst galaxy nuclei ranges from 10(exp 8) to 10(exp 9) solar mass. While substantial, the molecular gas mass represents only a small percentage, approximately 9%-16%, of the dynamical mass in the same region.

We have resolved 450 micrometer and 800 micrometer emission from the W3(Main) star forming region into three major peaks, using 8 inch - 14 inch beams with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea. One of the submillimeter sources is identified with W3 - IRS5, a well-known candidate protostar. However, to our surprise, we find that none of the submillimeter peaks coincides with any of the prominent compact HII regions in the area. We estimate that the three submillimeter sources together contribute 30-50 percent of the total bolometric luminosity of the region, and speculate that the contribution of luminous radio-quiet sources to the total luminosity of HII region/molecular cloud complexes may be larger than is often assumed.

VV 114 is a nearby example of a far-infrared (FIR) bright, high luminosity (L(sub FIR) greater than 10(exp 11) solar luminosity) interacting galaxy pair. At a redshift of z = 0.02 it provides an opportunity to study such interacting galaxies at a favorable spatial scale (390 pc/arcsec). This paper presents new high resolution near-infrared (1.25 to 3.7 micrometer) and visible images, and visible spectra of VV 114. A picture emerges of a system with widespread massive star formation throughout both interacting galaxies. The brighter visible galaxy (VV 114W) shows H II region-like emission in both visual spectra and near-infrared colors, with no more than two magnitudes of visual extinction. The brightest peak of infrared and radio emission (VV 114E) has extreme near-infrared colors and is located at a minimum of visible emission. This indicates a large concentration of dust in the nucleus of VV 114E that is nearly entirely obscuring a major luminosity source in this system.

We report on the detection of CO(4 [leads into, converted to] 3) and CO(5 [leads into, converted to] 4) emission from the powerful radio galaxy B2 0902+34 at a redshift < z(sub co) > = 3.3995 +/- )0.0002.

A spectroscopic survey of a sample of 201 luminous IRAS galaxies was caried out using the Palomar 5-meter amd University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescopes.

A spectroscopic survey of a large sample of luminous infrared galaxies has been caried out using the Palomar 5-m telescope and the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope.

The present CO(J = 1 to 0) line survey of powerful radio galaxies has led to the detection of five sources in eight IRAS-determined radio galaxies. The range of the computed molecular gas masses is 1-7 times the H2 mass of the Milky Way and strikingly contrasts with the low molecular gas masses found in radio-quiet FIR-selected elliptical galaxies. These new CO observations lend support to the hypothesis that powerful radio galaxies result from disk galaxy collisions that evolve into gas-rich, peculiar E/S0 galaxies in the course of their merging.

The interacting spiral galaxy pair UGC 12914/5 was mapped with the 'VLA' for a 1.49 GHz atlas of the IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample. Half of the flux from UGC 12914/5 arises from the gap between UGC 12914 and UGC 12915, across which the radio contours are drawn like filaments of taffy. The bright radio continuum connecting UGC 12914 with UGC 12915 is a synchrotron source which therefore probably contains both cosmic rays and magnetic fields. It is suggested that the filaments were stripped from UGC 12914 and UGC 12915 as their stellar disks interpenetrated during a recent encounter; this implies that the radio bridge is a relic whose properties contain information about direct collisions of galaxies with gaseous disks. New maps have been made of the radio continuum and H I line emission from UGC 12914/5 in order to verify the stripping hypothesis.

Observations are presented which show that CO is present in both the troposphere and stratosphere of Neptune, whereas is confined to the Neptune stratosphere with a mean mole fraction in the 0.003-30 mbar pressure level range of 1.0 x 10 exp -9. CO is present in both the stratosphere and in the troposphere with a uniformly mixed model fraction of 1.2 x 10 exp -6. Upper limits of 1.0 x 10 exp -10 and 3.0 x 10 exp -8 mole fractions are derived for HCN and CO respectively on Uranus. The origin of these species in the atmosphere of Neptune and their nondetection in that of Uranus are discussed in detail. It is concluded that the most plausible scenario involves upward convection of CO and N2 from Neptune's deep interior and a failure of chemical equilibrium at deep atmospheric levels, allowing excess CO and presumably N2 to reach the upper atmosphere. Nondetection in Uranus may be explained by the lack of a significant internal heat source in the planet and consequent suppression of vertical convection.

Radio observations of 60 bright IRAS galaxies with redshifts of 1500-25,000 km/sec are reported. Data obtained in the 1-0 line of CO using the 12-m NRAO radio telescope during 1985-1988 are presented in extensive tables, graphs, and line profiles and analyzed along with similar data on 29 less distant IRAS bright galaxies (Tinney et al., 1990). The galaxies are found to have H2 masses of (1-60) x 10 to the 9th solar mass and a mean ratio of H2 to warm dust of 540 + or - 290, corresponding to a total gas/dust ratio of 900-1100. The discrepancy between this value and that for the Galaxy (about 150) is tentatively attributed to the presence of undetected cold dust or errors in interpreting the IR data. The mechanisms which might be responsible for the high ratios of IR luminosity to H2 mass (2-220 solar luminosity per solar mass) are discussed.

The Owens Valley mm-wave interferometer has been used for high-resolution (about 3-7 arcsec) mapping of CO emission in three luminous IRAS galaxies: IRAS 17208 - 0014, 15107 + 0724, and IRAS 10173 + 0828. These galaxies are among the most extreme, in terms of their L(ir)/L(B) ratio, for objects in the IRAS Bright Galaxy Surveys. The CO emission detected in the three galaxies originates from a single region centered on the IRAS emission peak. These observations have shown that these galaxies have similar values for the global L(ir)/M(H2) ratio, for the surface density of molecular gas in their central regions and for the extinction toward the nucleus (above 300 mag). A high L(ir)/L(B) ratio seems to be a good predictor for both a high global L(ir)/M(H2) ratio and very large central H2 surface densities.

Single dish CO (J = 1-0) measurements are reported for 29 galaxies of intermediate IR lumionosity in the IRAS Bright Galaxy sample, at distances in the range 20-40 Mpc. Most of the galaxies were mapped at 3-7 points with a 55 arcsec beam. The total H2 masses, assuming a standard Galactic CO-to-H2 conversion ratio, lie in the range of 500 million to 20 billion solar masses. The mean ratio of L(FIR)/M(H2) for this intermediate luminosity sample is approximately three times that found for Virgo spirals and approximately one-third of that found for a sample of higher-luminosity IRAS Bright Galaxies.

The VLA has been used in its A-, B-, C-, and D-configurations to make 1.49 GHz maps of sources in both the original and revised IRAS Bright Galaxy Samples of strong extragalactic sources selected at a wavelength of 60 microns. Integrated 1.49 GHz flux densities were obtained from the lowest resolution maps, and maps were made with higher resolution so that nearly all of the radio sources have been at least partially resolved. Only NGC 1377 was not detected at 1.49 GHz. An atlas of contour maps, a table of total flux densities plus other radio source parameters, and references to published radio maps are given. Since the infrared and radio continuum brightness distributions of IR-selected galaxies are usually similar, these high-resolution radio maps can be used as substitutes for the unavailable IR maps to indicate the sizes and precise locations of the IR-emitting regions.

Researchers present high-resolution (approx. 6 seconds) CO observations of the merging galaxies NGC 4038/9 made with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) Millimeter Wave Interferometer. The CO observations of Arp 244 were obtained between April and June 1988 using the OVRO Millimeter Wave Interferometer. Two fields with phase centers near the NGC 4039 nucleus and near the NGC 4038 nucleus were observed. The size of the synthesized beam is approximately 6.5 x 7 seconds at PA=72 degrees. The rms in a single cleaned channel map is 0.06 Jy beam(exp -1), corresponding to a brightness temperature of 0.12 K over the synthesized beam. Contour maps of the integrated CO intensity for both interferometer fields are shown. Three CO concentrations are evident. Two are centered near the nuclei of NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, closely correlated with H alpha and radio continuum maxima. A third CO emission region lies about 25 seconds northeast of the NGC 4039 nucleus. A number of radio continuum, H alpha, and 10 micron emission knots appear in this region. The total integrated intensity at the northern nuclear source, 302 K km/s, leads to a molecular mass of 8.3 by 10 to the 8th power solar mass assuming a Galactic CO to H2 conversion factor of 3.0 x 10 to the 20th power H2 cm(-2) (K km/s)(-1). The integrated CO intensity of the southern nuclear source leads to a molecular mass of 2.4 x 10 to the 8th solar mass. The extranuclear CO concentration contains 1.2 x 10 to the 9th power solar mass of molecular gas, extending over 170 km/s, and is resolved in a number of channels. Its large size, mass, and morphology strongly suggest that it is an agglomeration of several clumps.

High-resolution CO observations of the merging galaxies NGC 4038/39 (the 'Antennae') have been made with the Owens Valley Millimeter Wave Interferometer. Three concentrations of CO emission were detected. In addition to masses of a few x 100 million solar masses at each nucleus, approximately 1.2 x 10 to the 9th solar masses of molecular gas was discovered in a 32 arcsec x 22 arcsec region where the two galaxies overlap. Within this region are four distinct clumps. These coincide with H-alpha, 10 microns, and radio continuum peaks, suggesting that they are extremely active sites of star formation. The galaxy interaction appears to have concentrated gas at the nuclei of NGC 4038 and NGC 4039 and to have engendered enhanced star formation activity in the region where their disks overlap. From estimates of the SFR in this overlap region, it is suggested that the gas will be completely depleted in 240 million yr.

Continuum observations from 0.3 nm to 6 cm are presented for 109 optically selected quasars from the Palomar-Green (PG) Bright Quasar Survey. The far-infrared to soft X-ray continuum of radio-quiet and steep-spectrum radio-loud PG quasars can be described in a model consisting of two broad peaks: an 'infrared bump' at about 2 microns to 1 mm and the well-known 'big blue bump' at about 10 nm to 0.3 micron. All PG quasars emit a significant fraction of their bolometric luminosity at infrared wavelengths of 1.5-100 microns. The fraction varies from 10 to 50 percent with a typical value of 30 percent. The ratio of the 6 cm flux density to that at 1 micron has a bimodal distribution. There is no evidence for a tight correlation between the infrared and X-ray continua of quasars. It is suggested that the bulk of the emission between 2 microns and 1 mm in the infrared bump of the radio-quiet PG quasars and the radio-loud quasars with steep radio spectral indices is produced by thermal processes.

Total flux densities, peak flux densities, and spatial extents at 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns are presented for the 330 sources in the IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample. The flux density ratios S sub nu (60 microns)/S sub nu (100 microns) and S sub nu (12 microns)/S sub n (25 microns) are found to correlate with both the infrared luminosity and the ratio of IR to visible flux. The relation between these two flux density ratios is shown to follow that found previously, with different slopes appearing for the warmer and colder galaxies in the sample. The results suggest that single photon heating of small grains (often the dominant source of 12 and 25 micron radiation from galaxies) significantly affects the emission of some galaxies at 60 microns, and that optical depth effects may alter the emergent radiation at 12 and 25 microns.

Perseus A, 4C 12.50, and Cygnus A have been observed in the CO(J = 1 to 0) line. In Perseus, an estimate of 3.2 x 10 to the 9th solar masses is found for the molecular gas in the giant galaxy in the cluster center. An upper limit of M(H2) = 9 x 10 to the 9th solar masses is obtained for the galaxy in the center of Cygnus A. The results suggest that large amounts of molecular gas, and thus high rates of star formation, are involved in the genesis of the central engines that power extragalactic radio sources.

In infrared luminous galaxies the ratio of the CO(1 - 0) to H I integrated fluxes increases with the far-infrared excess, f(fir)/f(b). All infrared active galaxies with f(fir)/f(b) greater than 2 have molecular to atomic gas mass fractions greater than 0.5. Among the galaxies with the higher infrared excesses there are systems with strikingly small atomic mass fractions, where less than 15 percent of the total mass of interstellar gas is in atomic form. The optical morphology of luminous infrared galaxies indicates that the majority, if not all, of these objects are interacting systems. These observations suggest that the overall mass fraction of molecular to atomic gas, and the infrared luminosities per nucleon of interstellar gas are enhanced during galaxy-galaxy interactions.

CO(1 to 0) emission has been detected from the infrared quasar IRAS 07598+6508 and the luminous Seyfert galaxies IRAS 08572+3915 and Markarian 463 with the IRAM 30-m telescope. These objects were selected from a complete list of warm ultraluminous IRAS sources. The maximum redshift observed was 0.149 (cz = 44.621 km/s , IRAS 07598+6508). Assuming the same empirical relationship between CO brightness and H2 surface mass density as has been found for giant molecular clouds in the Milky Way, the mass of H2 gas in these objects is in the range 0.7 - 6 x 10 to the 10th solar masses, more than 2 - 20 times the H2 content of the Galaxy. The infrared and molecular gas properties of these galaxies are similar to other 'warm' ultraluminous infrared galaxies such as Mrk 231, and the UV-excess quasar Mrk 1014. It is suggested that objects such as these represent an important link in the evolution of ultraluminous infrared galaxies into UV-excess quasars.

This paper presents the results from a 21-cm Arecibo survey of the atomic hydrogen and radio continuum in the most luminous IRAS galaxies of the local universe. Ninety-two galaxies with FIR luminosities in the range of L(FIR) between the solar luminosity values of 2 x 10 to the 10th and 2 x 10 to the 12th were surveyed. Eighty eight of these were detected in the 21 cm line of atomic hydrogen; the radio continuum flux was determined for 80 galaxies. The data of this survey are compared the FIR and optical-wavelength band results. It is noted that luminous IR galaxies show a striking statistical trend for the optical radial velocities to be smaller than the systemic velocities derived from the 21 H I profiles.

Ground-baed observations of the object IRAS 14348-1447, which was discovered with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite, show that it is an extremely luminous colliding galaxy system that emits more than 95 percent of its energy at FIR wavelengths. IRAS 14348-1447, which is receeding from the sun at 8 percent of the speed of light, has a bolometric luminosity more than 100 times larger than that of the Galaxy, and is therefore as luminous as optical quasars. New optical, infrared, and spectroscopic measurements suggest that the dominant luminosity source is a dust-enshrouded quasar. The fuel for the intense activity is an enormous supply of molecular gas. Carbon monoxide emission has been detected at a wavelength of 2.6 millimeters by means of a new, more sensitive receiver recently installed on the 12-meter telescope of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. IRAS 14348-1447 is the most distant and luminous source of carbon monoxide line emission yet detected.

This paper presents the results of 1-10-micron observations and coadded IRAS data on 61 galaxies from the Bright Galaxy Sample, with IR luminosities, L(IR), equal to or greater than 10 to the 11th solar luminosities. It was found that an increase in the total L(IR) above 10 to the 11th solar luminosity is correlated with increased emission from hot dust with characteristic temperatures about 800 K. This hot dust contributes a substantial fraction of the 2.2- and 3.7-micron emission, resulting in a greatly increased dispersion in R(3.7/1.6) and R(2.2/1.6) for these high-luminosity galaxies, relative to lower-luminosity galaxies. This excess hot-dust emission appears to 'turn on' at luminosities of about 10 to the 11th solar luminosity. The spatial distribution of the 10-micron emission indicated a substantial extended component for most of the galaxies in this sample, implying that star-formation processes contribute significantly to the luminosities.

The Owens Valley millimeter-wave interferometer has been used for high-resolution mapping of the 2.6 mm CO emission from the high-luminosity infrared galaxies NGC 520 (Arp 157), NGC 7469 (Arp 298), and Arp 55. Assuming the same empirical relationship between CO brightness and molecular hydrogen surface mass density as has been found for giant molecular clouds in the Milky Way, it is found that the masses of H2 gas in these concentrations are 10 to the 9th - 10 to the 10th solar masses, typically one-third of the total molecular gas content of these galaxies. The interferometric sizes correspond to radii of 0.8 kpc (NGC 520), 1.4 kpc (NGC 7469), and less than 2.8 kpc (Arp 55). For the same regions the dynamical masses estimated from the CO line width and size of the emission region are only a factor of 3-5 higher. The mean molecular gas surface densities averaged over these regions are in the range 610-825 solar masses/sq pc, a factor of 10 brighter than those obtained for corresponding regions in the nucleus of the Milky Way. The high mass fractions obtained for the interstellar medium in the central regions of these three galaxies strongly suggest that large-scale gravitational instability in the gas may play an important role in the further concentration of the gas in the nucleus and in possibly precipitating a large-scale burst of star formation.

The detection of H I absorption and OH and CO emission from the galaxy IRAS 12112 + 0305, which is receding from the sun at about 7 percent of the speed of light is reported. This galaxy, which appears to be an ongoing merger, radiates about 2 x 10 to the 12th solar luminosities in the infrared. The H I, OH, and CO spectra are indicative of large turbulent motions. From the millimeter wave CO observations, a total mass of molecular gas of 4 x 10 to the 10th solar masses is inferred. The OH emission in the 1667 MHz line is the most luminous extragalactic OH maser reported so far, with an isotropic luminosity of 1800 solar luminosities.

OH megamaser emission and H I and CO profiles from the distant infrared galaxies IRAS 10173 + 0828, III Zw 035, and Zw 475.056 are reported. The OH isotropic luminosities at 1667 MHz are 463, 534, and 6.6 solar luminosities, respectively. Far-infrared pumping efficiencies of the OH greater than 1 percent are found in IRAS 10173 + 0828 and III Zw 035. These two galaxies show anomalously large 1667/1665 MHz emission line ratios. OH megamasers reside in the nuclei of superluminous far-infrared galaxies that have a high content of molecular gas, high efficiency of star formation, and in some instances, a striking deficiency of atomic hydrogen.

A statistically complete sample of 324 of the brightest infrared galaxies discovered at 60 microns in the IRAS all-sky survey is described. The results show that far-infrared emission is a significant luminosity component in the local universe, representing 25 percent of the luminosity emitted by stars in the same volume. Above 10 to the 11th solar luminosities, the infrared luminous galaxies are the dominant population of objects in the universe, being as numerous as the Seyfert galaxies and more numerous than quasars at higher luminosities. The infrared luminosity appears to be independent of the optical luminosity of galaxies. Most infrared bright galaxies appear to require much of the interstellar matter to be contributing to the observed infrared luminosity. Approximately 60-80 percent of the far-infrared luminosity of the local universe can be attributed, directly or indirectly, to recent or ongoing star formation.

The IRAS survey of the local universe has revealed the existence of a class of ultraluminous infrared galaxies with L(8 to 1000 micrometer) greater than 10 to the 12th L sub 0 that are slightly more numerous, and as luminous as optically selected quasars at similar redshift. Optical CCD images of these infrared galaxies show that nearly all are advanced mergers. Millimeter wave CO observations indicate that these interacting systems are extremely rich in molecular gas with total H2 masses 1 to 3 x 10 to the 10th power M sub 0. Nearly all of the ultraluminous infrared galaxies show some evidence in their optical spectra for nonthermal nuclear activity. It is proposed that their infrared luminosity is powered by an embedded active nucleus and a nuclear starburst both of which are fueled by the tremendous reservoir of molecular gas. Once these merger nuclei shed their obscuring dust, allowing the AGN to visually dominate the decaying starburst, they become the optically selected quasars.

Results from a study of the far infrared properties of the brightest galaxies in the IRAS survey are described. There is a correlation between the infrared luminosity and the infrared to optical luminosity ratio and between the infrared luminosity and the far infrared color temperature in these galaxies. The infrared bright galaxies represent a significant component of extragalactic objects in the local universe, being comparable in space density to the Seyferts, optically identified starburst galaxies, and more numerous than quasars at the same bolometric luminosity. The far infrared luminosity in the local universe is approximately 25% of the starlight output in the same volume.

High resolution CO observations of the IRAS galaxies Arp 220, IC 694/NGC 3690, NGC 6240 and NGC 7469 were made with the Millimeter Wave Interferometer of the Owen Valley Radio Observatory. These yield spatial information on scales of 1 to 5 kpc and allow the separation of compact condensations from the more extended emission in the galaxies. In the case of the obviously interacting system IC 694/NGC 3690 the contributions of each component can be discerned. For that galaxy, and also for Arp 220, the unusually high lumonisities may be produced by nonthermal processes rather than by intense bursts of star formation.

A compilation of CO emission regions and their measured parameters is presented which represents a nearly complete accounting of the molecular clouds in the first quadrant of the Galaxy. Emission regions associated with radio H II regions have systematically brighter CO peaks that are a factor of two to three times larger and have twice the mean velocity dispersion as the general cloud population. Both the H II region clouds and the hot core regions have a Galactic distribution characteristic of a spiral arm population, whereas the colder clouds are much less confined in Galactic azimuthal angle. Virial masses are obtained for the large sample of clouds with assigned kinematic distances. The mean H2 density for a GMC of diameter 40 pc is 180/cm. For these clouds, a linear relationship is found between the H2 column density and the integrated CO emission. The variation in the Z-dispersion of clouds as a function of cloud mass suggests that more massive GMCs have smaller random velocities.

The sites of massive star formation in molecular clouds are investigated by comparing high-resolution radio surveys of molecular and ionized gas emission in the Milky Way. CO emission maps from the Massachusetts-Stony Brook survey of the first Galactic quadrant are used to locate, in l, b, and v, the molecular clouds associated with radio recombination-line H II regions. It is found that the radio H II regions are typically associated with giant molecular clouds (GMCs) with diameters of 20-60 pc and virial masses of 100,000 to a million solar masses. The radio H II regions appear preferentially concentrated toward the centers of the GMCs, contrary to the 'blister' picture of massive star formation on cloud surfaces.

High-resolution (about 5-arcsec) CO observations of the interacting galaxy pair Arp 299 (IC 694-NGC 3690) show that about 40 percent of the total molecular gas content is concentrated in two compact regions each of mass 1.4 x 10 to the 9th solar mass. One component lies at the nucleus of IC 694, while the other spans the region of overlap between the two galaxies. The properties of the latter component are consistent with its being a region of greatly enhanced star formation. However, the unusually high L(FIR)/M(H2) ration for IC 694, together with the presence of a flat-spectrum radio source, suggest that its remarkable luminosity may be largely produced by nonthermal processes.

The detection of CO(J = 1-0) emission and optical imaging of the luminous infrared galaxy Markarian 231 are reported. The galaxy is extremely rich in molecular gas with MT(H2) approximately equal to 1.4 x 10 to the 10th solar masses, approximately 5 times the molecular gas content of the Galaxy. Markarian 231 is the most luminous object in the local universe (z approximately equal to or less than 0.1), with a far-infrared luminosity (lambda = 40-400 microns) of 2.1 x 10 to the 12th solar luminosities. THe CO detection yields a L(FIR)/M(H2) ratio of 150. A deep optical CCD image shows two striking tidal tails with total extent of about 75 kpc. The CCD image strongly suggests that Markarian 231 is an advanced merger system. If the molecular gas is highly concentrated in the nuclear region it may fuel an intense starburst and possibly feed the accretion onto an embedded QSO. The trigger for the intense activity observed in Markarian 231 appears to be the collision of two gas-rich spiral galaxies.

The results from two large and homogeneous surveys, one in H I, the other in CO, are used for a statistical review of the gaseous properties of bright infrared galaxies. A constant ratio between the thermal FIR radiation and nonthermal radio emission is a universal property of star formation in spiral galaxies. The current rate of star formation in starburst galaxies is found to be 3-20 times larger than in the Milky Way. Galaxies with the higher FIR luminosities and warmer dust, have the larger mass fractions of molecular to atomic interstellar gas, and in some instances, striking deficiencies of neutral hydrogen are found. A statistical blueshift of the optical systemic velocities relative to the radio systemic velocities, may be due to an outward motion of the optical line-emitting gas. From the high rates of star formation, and from the short times required for the depletion of the interstellar gas, it is concluded that the most luminous infrared galaxies represent a brief but important phase in the evolution of some galaxies, when two galaxies merge changing substantially their overall properties.

The Owens Valley Millimeter Wave Interferometer has been used to map the 2.6-mm CO emission in the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220. Approximately 70 percent of the CO emission from the galaxy originates from an unresolved region less than 4 arcsec x 6 arcsec in size (corresponding to 1500 pc diameter) centered on the near-infrared nucleus. The mass of gas within this region is 10 to the 10th solar mass, which is about 30 times greater than that in an equivalent area of the Galaxy. This concentration could result in efficient star formation via cloud-cloud collisions and provide a significant accretion flow onto a compact, central object.

Observational evidence is presented for the compression of molecular gas in the interface between colliding GMCs, and it is proposed that this is the dominant mode for high-mass star formation in the Galaxy. For a sample of 94 GMCs associated with high-luminosity radio H II regions, the efficiency of OB star formation decreases significantly with increasing cloud mass over the observed mass range. It is concluded that star formation is generally not stimulated by an internal mechanism. The formation of OB stars by cloud-cloud collisions is suggested by the observed quadratic dependence of the Galactic H II region distribution on the local density of H2. The preference for OB star formation in spiral arms is then naturally accounted for by orbit crowding and the increased collision frequency of clouds in the spiral arms.

The face-on distribution of molecular gas in the first Galactic quadrant, derived from the Massachusetts-Stony Brook Galactic Plane CO Survey, was compared to the Galactic distribution of giant radio HII regions. The HII regions were found to preferentially select gas regions of higher than average density (more than twice the mean) and showed a strong correlation with the second power of the gas density. Systematic effects were tested with a Monte Carlo simulated HII region distribution and found to be negligible. The 135 HII regions were selected from the radio catalogs of Downes et at. (1980) and Wink et al. (1982). The HII regions were required to be within the CO survey 1 and b limits, within the solar circle, and not part of the 3 kpc expanding arm. The velocities of the HII regions were tabulated by the catalog authors and obvious associations with known objects and H2CO absorptions were used by them to assign distances. The distance assignments were here grouped into two categories; (1) those HII regions with definite distance assignments (85 objects); and (2) those HII regions with less secure distance assignments and those for which no near-far assignment was possible (50 objects).

The paper reports observations of CO(J = 1-0) emission from an unbiased sample of the highest-luminosity IRAS galaxies with the aim of measuring their molecular gas content and determining whether star formation is a viable energy source for these high luminosities. All of the observed galaxies are rich in molecular gas with H2 masses in the range (4 x 10 to the 9th)-(4 x 10 to the 10th) solar masses. Their primary luminosity source appears to be star formation in molecular clouds. The majority, if not all, of the most luminous IRAS galaxies (L-FIR greater than 10 to the 11th solar luminosities) appear to be strongly interacting systems; those with the highest L-FIR/M(H2) ratios are mergers or close contact pairs.

The local luminosity function for galaxies with vLv (60 microns) of 10 to the 10th solar luminosities or more is derived from a sample of bright galaxies detected in the IRAS survey. It is found that within several hundred megaparsecs the infrared luminous galaxies comprise a significant fraction of high-luminosity objects, and the infrared luminosity emitted by galaxies is a substantial fraction of that emitted in the visible portion of the spectrum. The far-infrared energy density in the local universe is close to that in visible light.

In studies of molecular clouds in external galaxies, the distribution of (C-12)O emissivity as a function of radius in a galaxy has been employed to infer the surface density of molecular hydrogen with galactocentric radius. In principle, observations of more optically thin molecular species, such as (C-13)O, can be used as an alternative tracer of the mass of molecular hydrogen in a galaxy. Since the (C-13)O lines have a much lower opacity than the saturated, nearly thermalized (C-12)O lines, their intensity variations as a function of galactocentric radius are more readily interpreted in terms of gas density variations. The first strip maps of the (C-13)O distributions in six spiral galaxies are presented, and the (C-13)O and (C-12)O radial distributions are compared. Attention is given to the reliability of H2 masses and H2 distributions derived from (C-12)O data.

The properties of the molecular cloud distribution are summarized, with special emphasis on the solar neighborhood. It is shown that the mass density within molecular clouds is sufficiently low that passing or grazing encounters cannot be significant in the perturbation of cometary orbits at 40,000 AU. The mean time for the sun between penetrating encounters of GMCs is about 1.5 Gyr with a typical duration of 1 Myr. The long time interval between encounters rules out a link between short-term periodicities in the geologic record and molecular cloud passages.

CO emission has been detected from 20 of 21 bright radio spirals with strong extended nuclear sources, including the most distant (NGC 7674) and the most luminous (IC 4553 = Arp 220, NGC 6240) galaxies yet detected in CO. All of these galaxies are rich in molecular gas, with M total(H2) = 3 x 10 to the 8th - 2 x 10 to the 10th solar masses. IRAS observations show that they have a strong far-infrared (FIR) excess, with L(FIR)/L(B) approximately equal to 1-35 and L(FIR) (40-400 microns) approximately equal to 10 to the 10th - 10 to the 12th L solar masses. The primary luminosity source for these radio cores appears to be star formation in molecular clouds. A strong correlation is found between the FIR and extended 21 cm continuum flux, implying that the fraction of massive stars formed is independent of the star formation rate. The ratio L(FIR)/M(H2) provides a measure of the current rate of star formation, which is found to be a factor 3-20 larger in these galaxies than for the ensemble of molecular clouds in the Milky Way. At these rates their molecular gas will be depleted in about 10 to the 8th yr.

Observations of the galactic longitude and latitude distributions of lambda = 2.6 mm CO emission are presented. Analysis of these spectral-line data yields the large-scale distribution of molecular clouds in the galactic disk and their z-distribution out of the disk. Strong maxima in the number of molecular clouds occur in the galactic nucleus and at galactic radii 4 to 8 kpc. The peak at 4 to 8 kpc correlates well with a region of enhanced 100-MeV gamma-ray emissivity. This correlation strongly supports the conclusion that the gamma-rays are produced as a result of cosmic ray interactions in molecular H2 clouds rather than in H(I). The width of the cloud layer perpendicular to the galactic plane between half-density points is 105 plus or minus 15 pc near the 5.5-kpc peak. The total mass of molecular gas in the interior of the galaxy exceeds that of atomic hydrogen and is 30 to the 9th power solar mass based on these observations.
