In spite of a superficial similarity with gas bubbles, the intimate coupling between dynamical and thermal processes confers to oscillating vapor bubbles some unique characteristics. This paper examines numerically the validity of some asymptotic-theory predictions such as the existence of two resonant radii and a limit size for a given sound amplitude and frequency. It is found that a small vapor bubble in a sound field of sufficient amplitude grows quickly through resonance and continues to grow thereafter at a very slow rate, seemingly indefinitely. Resonance phenomena therefore play a role for a few cycles at most, and reaching a limit size-if one exists at all-is found to require far more than several tens of thousands of cycles. It is also found that some small bubbles may grow or collapse depending on the phase of the sound field. The model accounts in detail for the thermo-fluid-mechanic processes in the vapor. In the second part of the paper, an approximate formulation valid for bubbles small with respect to the thermal penetration length in the vapor is derived and its accuracy examined, The present findings have implications for acoustically enhanced boiling heat transfer and other special applications such as boiling in microgravity.

Scale-similar models employ multiple filtering operations to identify the smallest resolved scales, which have been shown to be the most active in the interaction with the unresolved subgrid scales. They do not assume that the principal axes of the strain-rate tensor are aligned with those of the subgrid-scale stress (SGS) tensor, and allow the explicit calculation of the SGS energy. They can provide backscatter in a numerically stable and physically realistic manner, and predict SGS stresses in regions that are well correlated with the locations where large Reynolds stress occurs. In this paper, eddy viscosity and mixed models, which include an eddy-viscosity part as well as a scale-similar contribution, are applied to the simulation of two flows, a high Reynolds number plane channel flow, and a three-dimensional, nonequilibrium flow. The results show that simulations without models or with the Smagorinsky model are unable to predict nonequilibrium effects. Dynamic models provide an improvement of the results: the adjustment of the coefficient results in more accurate prediction of the perturbation from equilibrium. The Lagrangian-ensemble approach [Meneveau et al., J. Fluid Mech. 319, 353 (1996)] is found to be very beneficial. Models that included a scale-similar term and a dissipative one, as well as the Lagrangian ensemble averaging, gave results in the best agreement with the direct simulation and experimental data.

Gas bubbles driven in radial oscillations are subject to an instability of the spherical shape that is opposed by surface tension and viscosity. An exact linear formulation for the study of the phenomenon has been available for many years, but its complexity has discouraged a detailed investigation. With the recent theory of sonoluminescence of Lohse and co-workers, there has been a renewed interest in the problem and new data have become available. This paper presents a numerical method for the solution of the pertinent equations and compares the theory with these new data. The coupling of the strong nonlinearity of the bubble radial oscillations with the parametric mechanism of the surface instability results in a very complex structure for the stability boundary. Nevertheless, a good agreement between theory and data is found. A comparison with earlier approximate models is also made.

In a previous paper Cohen and Murphy (1969) used the Meeron resummation (1958) of the Mayer diagrams (1950) to calculate the pair correlation for the classical electron gas in thermal equilibrium. They found that successive terms in the expression for the pair correlation were more and more singular for small interparticle spacing, actually dominating the Debye-Hueckel result for sufficiently small distances. This led to apparent divergence in the higher order contributions to the internal energy. The present paper shows that the apparent anomalies in the Cohen-Murphy results can be removed without further resummation by a more careful treatment of the region of small interparticle spacing. It is shown that there is really no anomalous behavior at short range in any order and all integrals in the expression for the internal energy converge.

In this paper an investigation of the velocity fluctuations in the free stream above an incompressible turbulent boundary layer developing at constant pressure is described. It is assumed that the fluctuations receive contributions from three statistically independent sources: (1) one-dimensional unsteadiness, (2) free-stream turbulence, and (3) the irrotational motion induced by the turbulent boundary layer. Measurements were made in a wind tunnel with a root-mean-square level of the axial velocity fluctuations of about 0.2%. All three velocity components were measured using an X-wire probe. The unsteadiness was determined from the spanwise covariance of the axial velocity fluctuations, measured using two single-wire probes. The results show that it is possible to separate the contributions to the rms level of the velocity fluctuations without resorting to the dubious technique of high-pass filtering. This separation could be extended to the spectral densities of the contributions if measurements of sufficient accuracy were available.

The paper describes an investigation of the velocity fluctuations in the free stream above an incompressible turbulent boundary layer developing at constant pressure. Measurements were performed in a wind tunnel with an rms level of axial velocity fluctuations of about 0.2 percent. The possibility of assessing the contributions to the rms level of the velocity fluctuations without using the high-pass filtering technique is demonstrated.

The paper presents a series of incompressible two-dimensional simulations of driven/dissipative MHD turbulence where the amount of correlation between the kinetic and magnetic forcing is regulated, thereby controlling the amount of cross helicity injection. It is shown that correlated forcing provides a strong source of magnetofluid cross helicity. The clear appearance of the 'minority species effect,' which is the most striking and systematic effect during this driven dynamic alignment process, is discussed.

Recent experiments have shown that, in rough-wall turbulent boundary layers, drag varies systematically with the spanwise aspect ratio lambda(z) (span/height) of roughness elements. In this paper, the effect of lambda(z) on turbulence structure has been examined. Based on lambda(z), the roughness in a transversely grooved surface with lambda(z) much greater than 1 is the opposite extreme of model plant canopies with lambda(z) much less than 1, studied in wind tunnels, whereas sandgrain is an intermediate type. Second-, third-, and fourth-order turbulence moments have been measured in turbulent boundary layers over transversely grooved and smooth surfaces and compared with available turbulence structure measurements over other types of surfaces. The near-wall turbulence structure is found to vary with lambda(z). The instantaneous motions involved in the flux of shear stress near the wall in smooth and transversely grooved surfaces are opposite in sign to those in three-dimensional roughness. The former is explained in terms of hairpin vortices alone, while the latter group is modeled to have an additional vortex (the so-called necklace vortex which straddles a three-dimensional roughness element near its base).

The nonlinear evolution of periodic disturbances on vortex trails is considered. In addition to following small initial perturbations, large amplitude initial disturbances of the vortex trails are also studied. It is shown that the equations support a rich variety of essentially nonlinear solutions including unbounded and quasisteady ones. These solutions are found to correspond to various modes of vortex clustering in the physical plane. At the close of the paper, comparisons of these results with recent numerical and experimental findings on the wakes behind stationary cylinders, and also transversely oscillating bluff objects, are made.

In this paper numerical calculation of the spatial stability of disturbances in the parallel and nonparallel Blasius boundary layers is considered. Chebyshev polynomials are used for discretization. The problem with the boundary condition at infinity is overcome, and the resulting nonlinear matrix eigenvalue problem is attacked directly. The secondary eigenvalue problem for three-dimensional disturbances is shown to be uniformly stable, and particular solutions of this problem generated by the Orr-Sommerfeld equation are shown. A numerical solution of the nonparallel problem is considered using Chebyshev polynomials. The matrix equations are analyzed directly and the problem of uniqueness of the nonparallel correction is settled by careful application of the Fredholm alternative. Nonparallel corrections to the streamwise eigenfunction are shown.

In this paper, results from two experimental and two computational investigations of plane turbulent mixing layers are presented and compared. The experimental results include flow visualization data using the smoke laser technique and mean flow and turbulence measurements obtained with hot X-wires and a two-component LDV. Reasonably good agreement is found among these techniques, at least for turbulence quantities up to second order. Reynolds-averaged computations are successful at capturing the complete evolution of the mixing layer, including wake effects in the near field and approach to self-preservation in the far field. The two-dimensional vortex method shows excellent qualitative and quantitative agreement with measured data for the forced mixing layer. For the unforced layer, the results seem to indicate that a three-dimensional computation may be necessary.

This paper examines the linear theory of electrostatic waves and instabilities in an unmagnetized, homogeneous Vlasov plasma. The first configuration considered is that of a stable plasma with three Maxwellian components: electrons, positive ions, and negative ions. The dispersion properties of the lightly damped ion modes are studied as a function of relative electron density and relative component temperatures. The second configuration considered is that of a tenuous electron-ion beam with drift speed streaming through a negative/positive ion plasma. If the beam is very tenuous, an electron beam instability is excited; if the beam is more dense, the instability becomes Buneman-like with parabolic dispersion. The thresholds and maximum growth rates of these instabilities are described as functions of the beam density and drift speed.

The possibility of a new mechanism for the excitation of unstable modes in cold background plasmas is indicated in this paper. These beam-cyclotron modes are excited by the presence of the ring-beam distribution of suprathermal electrons. The usual eigenmode excitation of a cold plasma is reviewed, and the new type of instability is examined using a single-harmonic approximation and multiharmonic treatment.

In an effort to better understand the physics and structure of coherent events in a turbulent boundary layer, an attempt is made to produce 'artificial' bursts. These are generated in a turbulent boundary layer developed on a flat plate towed in an 18 m water channel and thus with negligible freestream turbulence. The burstlike events are produced by either withdrawing near-wall fluid from two minute holes separated in the spanwise direction or by pitching a miniature delta wing that is flush-mounted to the wall. Either of these two actions generates a hairpinlike vortex and low-speed streak that resemble naturally occurring structures. The resulting sequence of events that occur at a given location can be uniquely controlled, thus allowing detailed examination via phase-locked measurements and flow visualization. In this paper, the proof of concept of artificial burst generation is established by comparing the artificial events with natural, random bursts using flow visualization and hot-film signals.

Little is known regarding the mechanisms involved in the production of radiation at frequencies which are much higher than the maximum plasma frequency in nonmagnetic plasmas. It is pointed out that radiation at high multiples of the plasma frequency has been observed in laser-pellet experiments, in relativistic beam-plasma interactions, and in low-energy beam-plasma interactions. Radiation at twice the plasma frequency can be produced by coalescence of two Langmuir waves. Another approach is based on radiation near the plasma frequency or its second harmonic, produced by instability or by external sources. Raman scatter from preexisting Langmuir turbulence is permitted repeatedly. At each step such scattering will produce frequency upshifts (anti-Stokes process) and downshifts (Stokes process). The present paper is concerned with this process. Attention is given to equilibrium spectra, analytic approximations, laser-plasma interaction and coherent radiation from relativistic electron beams.

In the literature, the emission of radiation at 2(omega sub e), where omega sub e denotes the electron plasma frequency, is usually explained as having been produced by the nonlinear interaction of two Langmuir waves via a backscattering process. Since the emission is frequently observed in solar radio bursts, the mechanism has attracted considerable theoretical interest. In the present paper a model is proposed based on a synchrotron-maser instability excited by a hollow beam of moderately relativistic electrons in a plasma, in which the plasma frequency is much higher than the gyrofrequency. An important conclusion is that, as a result of this instability, unpolarized electromagnetic waves with frequencies near 2(omega sub e) may be amplified.

An exact analytical solution for the velocity field, both interior and exterior, induced by an infinite right-handed helical vortex filament is derived. Due to the way the variables combine in this solution, the paper also shows that it is possible to derive a stream function for this nonaxisymmetric flow. Sample calculations of these expressions are included.

In magnetohydrodynamic problems in which there are boundaries in the axial or azimuthal symmetry directions, the energy principle involves multiple nonorthogonal trial perturbations. The subsequent Euler-Lagrange coupling of these allowed excitations necessitates a generalization of the Newcomb necessary-and-sufficient stability criterion. This extension, in which the absence of a conjugate point (instead of a simple zero) provides stability, is described in this paper. An important aspect of the proof involves the treatment of certain asymmetries which arise in the presence of the anisotropy caused by the magnetic field. The general method described here has applications to finite-length axial laboratory pinches and to astrophysical plasmas with rooted magnetic fields.

It is noted that since its introduction in 1971, the subject of the statistical dynamics of the electrostatic guiding center plasma model has received considerable theoretical attention. The paper presents the theory and a simulation for the two-dimensional electrostatic guiding center plasma in a uniform gravitational field. Finally, it is shown that the gravitational field leads to large electrostatic energies at long wavelengths and associated vortex motion in the plasma.

The paper considers the effects of a weak ambient magnetic field on the oscillating two-stream and parametric decay instabilities with emphasis on the dependence of the angular variation of the instability thresholds and growth rates on the magnetic field. A dispersion relation is derived in the limit in which the electron plasma frequency is much greater than the cyclotron frequency, and is solved for dipole and monochromatic pump spectra. The analysis shows that the presence of a magnetic field can substantially enhance thresholds and reduce growth rates for waves propagating at an oblique angle with respect to the ambient magnetic field, so that the magnetic field has a stabilizing influence on the off-parallel propagating modes.

The paper considers a modified Korteweg-de Vries equation that permits wave amplification or damping. A 'terminal similarity' solution is identified for large times in amplified systems. Numerical results are given which confirm that the terminal similarity solution is a valid local approximation for mu t sufficiently large and positive, even though the approximation is not uniformly valid in space.

The paper examines the behavior of linear perturbations in an incompressible fluid undergoing acceleration by radiation pressure, with reference to processes occurring in quasars, supernovae, and planetary nebulae. It is shown that, contrary to prior expectation, fluids accelerated by radiation pressure, are not always unstable to Rayleigh-Taylor modes. Some are, in fact, unstable, but the nature of the instability is qualitatively different.

The paper describes a numerical simulation of electron trajectories in weak random electric fields under conditions that are approximately true for Langmuir waves whose wavelength is much longer than the Debye length. Two types of trajectory calculations were made: (1) the initial particle velocity was made equal to the mean phase velocity of the waves, or (2) it was equal to 0.7419 times the mean velocity of the waves, so that the initial velocity differed substantially from all phase velocities of the wave spectrum. When the autocorrelation time is much greater than the trapping time, the particle motion can change virtually instantaneously from one of three states - high-velocity, low-velocity, or trapped state - to another. The probability of instantaneous transition from a high- or low-velocity state becomes small when the difference between the particle velocity and the mean phase velocity of the waves becomes high in comparison to the trapping velocity. Diffusive motion becomes negligible under these conditions also.
