Taking the nonlocal effect into account, the vibration governing differential equation and boundary conditions of a magnetostrictive composite cantilever resonator were established based on the Euler magnetoelastic beam theory. The frequency equation and vibration mode function of the composite cantilever were obtained by means of the separation of variables method and the analytic solution of ordinary differential equations. The lateral deflection, vibration governing equations, and boundary conditions were nondimensionalized. Furthermore, the natural frequency and modal function of the composite beam were quantitatively analyzed with different nonlocal parameters and transverse geometry dimensions using numerical examples. Compared with the results without considering the nonlocal effect, the influence of the nonlocal effect on the vibration characteristics was analyzed. The numerical results show that the frequency shift and frequency band narrowing of the magnetostrictive cantilever resonator are induced by nonlocal effects. In particular, the high-frequency vibration characteristics, such as vibration amplitude and modal node of the composite beam, are significantly affected. These analysis results can provide a reference for the functional design and optimization of magnetostrictive resonators.

Conventional light diffusers have periodic surface profiles, periodic refractive index distributions, or light scattering layers containing colloids. In all such structures the optical directivity of the light diffuser is cannot typically be controlled. Here we propose an electrically tunable light diffuser based on the application of ultrasound to a nematic liquid crystal (LC) material. The ultrasonic LC diffuser consists of an LC layer sandwiched by two glass discs and an ultrasonic transducer. The electrodes of the transducer are divided in a circumferential direction so that a resonant non-coaxial flexural vibration mode can be generated on the diffuser by controlling the electrical input signals. A continuous reversed-phase sinusoidal electric signal to the transducer generates the non-coaxial resonant flexural vibration mode on the glass disc, inducing an acoustic radiation force acting on the boundary between the LC layer and glass discs. This effect changes the molecular orientation of the LC and the transmitted light distribution. The diffusion angle of the transmitted light depends on the input voltage amplitude, and the diffusion angle was maximized at 16.0 V. The vibrational distribution and the diffusion directivity could be rotated by adjusting the input voltages to different electrodes, meaning that an ultrasonic LC diffuser with a thin structure and no moving mechanical parts provided a tunable light-diffusing functionality with rotatable directivity., (© 2024. Aiming to address the vibration noise problems on ships, we constructed a piezoelectric phononic crystal (PC) plate structure model, solved the governing equations of the structure using the partial differential equations module (PDE) in the finite element softwareCOMSOL6.1, and obtained the corresponding energy band structure, transmission curves, and vibration modal diagrams. The application of this method to probe the structural properties of two-dimensional piezoelectric PCs is described in detail. The calculation results obtained using this method were compared with the structures obtained using the traditional plane wave expansion method (PWE) and the finite element method (FE). The results were found to be in perfect agreement, which verified the feasibility of this method. To safely and effectively adjust the bandgap within a reasonable voltage range, this paper explored the order of magnitude of the plate thickness, the influence of the voltage on the bandgap, and the dependence between them. It was found that the smaller the order of magnitude of the plate thickness, the smaller the order of magnitude of the band in which the bandgap was located. The magnitude of the driving voltage that made the bandgap change became smaller accordingly. The new idea of attaching the PC plate to the conventional plate structure to achieve a vibration damping effect is also briefly introduced. Finally, the effects of lattice constant, plate width, and thickness on the bandgap were investigated.

Nanoscale defects like grain boundaries (GBs) would introduce local phonon modes and affect the bulk materials' thermal, electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. It is highly desirable to correlate the phonon modes and atomic arrangements for individual defects to precisely understand the structure-property relation. Here we investigated the localized phonon modes of Al 2 O 3 GBs by combination of the vibrational electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in scanning transmission electron microscope and density functional perturbation theory (DFPT). The differences between GB and bulk obtained from the vibrational EELS show that the GB exhibited more active vibration at the energy range of <50 meV and >80 meV, and further DFPT results proved the wide distribution of bond lengths at GB are the main factor for the emergence of local phonon modes. This research provides insights into the phonon-defect relation and would be of importance in the design and application of polycrystalline materials.

The vibration mode of the radiation surface of transducer (or structure of supersaturated cavitation cloud in thin liquid) is investigated experimentally by high-speed photography. The classification of saturated, supersaturated and undersaturated cavitation clouds was proposed, and a comparison was made between saturated and supersaturated cavitation cloud structures in liquid thin layers. The characteristics and formation mechanism of supersaturated cavitation cloud structure were investigated. The structure of DNA double helix is stabilized by water molecules and metal counterions that form the ion-hydration shell around the macromolecule. Understanding the role of the ion-hydration shell in the physical mechanisms of the biological functioning of DNA requires detailed studies of its structure and dynamics at the atomistic level. In the present work, the study of collective vibrations of water molecules around the DNA double helix was performed within the framework of classical all-atom molecular dynamics methods. Calculating the vibrational density of states, the vibrations of water molecules in the low-frequency spectra ranged from [Formula: see text]30 to [Formula: see text]300 [Formula: see text] were analyzed for the case of different regions of the DNA double helix (minor groove, major groove, and phosphate groups). The analysis revealed significant differences in the collective vibrations behavior of water molecules in the DNA hydration shell, compared to the vibrations of bulk water. All low-frequency modes of the DNA ion-hydration shell are shifted by about 15-20 [Formula: see text] towards higher frequencies, which is more significant for water molecules in the minor groove region of the double helix. The interactions of water molecules with the atoms of the macromolecule induce intensity decrease of the mode of hydrogen-bond symmetrical stretching near 150 [Formula: see text], leading to the disappearance of this mode in the DNA spectra. The obtained results can provide an interpretation of the experimental data for DNA low-frequency spectra and may be important for the understanding of the processes of indirect protein-nucleic recognition., (© 2023. Identifying relatively weak areas is of great significance for improving the seismic reliability of structures. In this paper, a modal strain energy decomposition method is proposed, which can realize the decoupling of the comprehensive modal strain energy of a planar structure into three basic modal strain energies. According to the decomposition results, the modal strain energy decomposition diagram and the modal strain energy cloud diagram can be drawn so as to realize the quantitative and visual analysis of the vibration modes. The method is independent of load cases and can identify relatively weak areas of a structure from the perspective of inherent characteristics. The comparison with the shaking table test results of the two-story shear wall shows that the modal strain energy decomposition method can effectively identify the type of the relatively weak area of a structure and locate the position of the relatively weak area. Finally, the 6-story shear wall is analyzed by the modal strain energy decomposition method, and the relatively weak areas under the first two vibration modes are identified.

In recent years, individual control of one's personal environment has been drawing increasing attention due to the growing interest in health care. Wearable devices are especially useful because of their controllability regardless of location. Humidity is one of the inevitable factors in the personal environment as a preventive against infectious diseases. Although atomization devices are commonly used as a method of humidity control, at present, there are no wearable humidity control devices. Vibration of a lithium niobate (LN) device in the thickness mode is a promising piezoelectric method for miniaturization of atomization devices for humidity control. To miniaturize the atomization device, the transducer size needs to be small not so much as to decrease the atomization efficiency. However, the effect of the device area on the atomization efficiency of LN at a size suitable for mounting in wearable devices has not been studied. Here, we conducted an atomization demonstration of LN devices with different sizes to evaluate particle size and atomization efficiency. Furthermore, to reveal the relationship between vibration behavior and atomization efficiency, resonance vibration in the MHz frequency band was evaluated by the finite element method and an impedance analyzer. The results showed that the peak size of water particles atomized by each device was in the range of 3.2 to 4.2 µm, which is smaller than particles produced by typical piezoelectric ceramics. Moreover, the best LN size for efficient atomization was found to be 8 mm × 10 mm among the five LN device sizes used in experiments. From the relationship between vibration behavior and atomization efficiency, the size of the transducer was suggested to affect the vibration mode. In this paper, a frequency-adjustable tuning fork electromagnetic energy harvester is introduced. The electromagnetic vibration energy harvester can adjust its natural frequency according to a change in the environmental excitation frequency without any change to the structure. In the frequency-adjustable range, it can make the energy harvester resonant with the environment excitation, and the output frequency stays the same. The frequency-adjustable tuning fork electromagnetic energy harvester significantly increases the range of frequencies used. The operating frequency of the centre can be easily switched from 9.2 to 20 Hz, enabling the application of multiple excitation frequencies. In addition, the output power and power density are significantly increased compared to a piezoelectric tuning fork energy harvester of the same size. The peak power is 23.59 mW at 9.2 Hz, the power increases by 14.85 mW, and the power density increases by 169.88%. The experimental results show that the electromagnetic tuning fork frequency-adjustable conversion energy harvester can make the LED lamp work.

Vertical bending vibration modes and rail wave propagation, including the damping characteristics, are the factors that cause rail corrugation. However, the ability to identify actual railways has been limited because of the huge number of sensors required for field tests. In this study, a novel and field-applicable method for identifying rail vibration modes and wave propagation characteristics is developed by multipoint hammering and the reciprocity theorem instead of multipoint measuring. Additionally, the proposed method is applied to an actual rail with a direct fastening track system on a bridge that has corrugation with a wavelength of approximately 0.04 m. As a result, the wavelength (wavenumber)-, group velocity-, and distance damping (attenuation) frequency relationship of the wave propagation is clarified in addition to the rail frequencies and mode shapes up to approximately 1500 Hz, including the pinned-pinned mode. Finally, the identified wavelength-frequency relationships and the measured rail irregularity can empirically demonstrate that the generated corrugation on the rail is produced by wave interference on the two axles in the bogie.

In this paper, a novel tuning fork structure for self-frequency up-conversion is proposed. The structure has an in-phase vibration mode and an anti-phase vibration mode. The in-phase vibration mode is used to sense the environment vibration, and the anti-phase vibration mode is used for energy conversion and power generation. The low-frequency energy collection and the high-frequency energy conversion can be achieved simultaneously. Theoretical and experimental results show that the tuning fork frequency up-conversion energy harvester has excellent performance. This structure provides the energy harvester with excellent output power in a low-frequency vibration environment. At the resonant frequency of 7.3 Hz under 0.7 g acceleration, the peak voltage is 41.8 V and the peak power is 8.74 mW. The tuning fork frequency up-conversion energy harvester causes the humidity sensor to work stably. The structure has the potential to power wireless sensor nodes or to be used as a small portable vibration storage device, especially suitable for the monitoring of the environment related to human movement.

The paper reports the charge transfer mechanism between poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and high energy materials such as RDX, HMX and TNT, respectively in terms of ratios of anti-stokes (AS) and stokes(S) Raman lines of NO 2 bands. Generally it works as an effective sensing medium for the detection of explosives when mixed in an equal proportion and are subjected to 532 nm wavelength without any chemical treatment [1]. The pristine PEDOT is less sensitive to 532 nm wavelength (2.33 eV) but influences the Raman S and AS lines of explosives in the mixture. The study also reveals that a small quantity (one milligram) of PEDOT is sufficient to initiate the positive charge transfer mechanism between its oxidized state to the lone pairs of electrons on the oxygen atoms of the nitro group of the explosive molecules. Consequently, the intensity of the Raman spectra of RDX, HMX and TNT is dropped by an order of 22.5, 11.45 and 17.2 times, respectively along with the shift of the NO 2 vibrational modes. It is also attributed to Photon-electron-phonon interaction. Finally, we have estimated the reduced mass of the functional group to ascertain the force constant and the intensity ratios of AS /S lines to confirm the charge transfer mechanism. We study the vibration modes of a short section in the middle turn of the gerbil cochlea including both longitudinal and radial interstitial fluid spaces between the pillar cells (PC) and the sensory hair cells to determine the role of the interstitial fluid flow within the organ of corti (OoC). Three detailed finite element (FE) models of the cochlear short section (CSS) are studied. In model 1, the CSS is without fluids; model 2 includes the OoC fluid, but not the exterior scalae fluids; and model 3 is the CSS with both scalae and OoC fluids. We find that: (1) the fundamental mode shape of models 1 or 3 is similar to the classical basilar membrane (BM) bending mode that includes pivoting of the arch of corti, and hence determines the low frequency vibrational mode shape of the cochlea in the presence of the cochlear wave. (2) The fundamental mode shape of model 2 is characterized by a cross-sectional shape change similar to the passive response of the cochlea. This mode shape includes a tilting motion of the inner hair cell (IHC) region, a fluid motion within the tunnel of corti (ToC) in the radial direction and along the OoC, and a bulging motion of the reticular lamina (RL) above the outer hair cell (OHC). Each of these motions provides a plausible mode of excitation of the sensory hair cells. (3) The higher vibrational modes of model 1 are similar to the electrically evoked response within the OoC and suggests that the higher vibrational modes are responsible for the active response of the cochlea. We also observed that the fluid flow through the OoC interstitial space is significant, and the model comparison suggests that the OoC fluid contributes to the biphasic BM motion seen in electrical stimulation experiments. The effect of fluid viscosity on cilium deflection was assessed by performing a transient analysis to calculate the cilium shearing gain. Electrocatalysis provides a powerful means to selectively transform molecules, but a serious impediment in making rapid progress is the lack of a molecular-based understanding of the reactive mechanisms or intermediates at the electrode-electrolyte interface (EEI). Recent experimental techniques have been developed for operando identification of reaction intermediates using surface infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy. However, large noises in the experimental spectrum pose great challenges in resolving the atomistic structures of reactive intermediates. To provide an interpretation of these experimental studies and target for additional studies, we report the results from quantum mechanics molecular dynamics (QM-MD) with explicit consideration of solvent, electrode-electrolyte interface, and applied potential at 298 K, which conceptually resemble the operando experimental condition, leading to a prototype of operando QM-MD (o-QM-MD). With o-QM-MD, we characterize 22 possible reactive intermediates in carbon dioxide reduction reactions ([Formula: see text]RRs). Furthermore, we report the vibrational density of states (v-DoSs) of these intermediates from two-phase thermodynamic (2PT) analysis. Accordingly, we identify important intermediates such as chemisorbed [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]), *HOC-COH, *C-CH, and *C-COH in our o-QM-MD likely to explain the experimental spectrum. Indeed, we assign the experimental peak at 1,191 cm -1 to the mode of C-O stretch in *HOC-COH predicted at 1,189 cm -1 and the experimental peak at 1,584 cm -1 to the mode of C-C stretch in *C-COD predicted at 1,581 cm -1 Interestingly, we find that surface ketene (*C=C=O), arising from *HOC-COH dehydration, also shows signals at around 1,584 cm -1 , which indicates a nonelectrochemical pathway of hydrocarbon formation at low overpotential and high pH conditions., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Objective: The study aimed to investigate the physiological basis of vibration mode of sound source of a variety of Mongolian höömii forms of singing in China., Methods: The participant is a Mongolian höömii performing artist who was recommended by the Chinese Medical Association of Art. He used three types of höömii, namely vibration höömii, whistle höömii, and overtone höömii, which were compared with general comfortable pronunciation of /i:/ as control. Phonation was observed during /i:/. A laryngostroboscope (Storz) was used to determine vibration source-mucosal wave in the throat., Results: For vibration höömii, bilateral ventricular folds approximated to the midline and made contact at the midline during pronunciation. Ventricular and vocal folds oscillated together as a single unit to form a composite vibration (double oscillator) sound source. For whistle höömii, ventricular folds approximated to the midline to cover part of vocal folds, but did not contact each other. It did not produce mucosal wave. The vocal folds produced mucosal wave to form a single vibration sound source. For overtone höömii, the anterior two-thirds of ventricular folds touched each other during pronunciation. The last one-third produced the mucosal wave. The vocal folds produced mucosal wave at the same time, which was a composite vibration (double oscillator) sound source mode., Conclusions: The Höömii form of singing, including mixed voices and multivoice, was related to the presence of dual vibration sound sources. Detection of persistent pollutants such as polychlorinated benzene in environment in trace amounts is challenging, but important. It is more difficult to distinguish homologues and isomers of organic pollutantd when present in trace amounts because of their similar physical and chemical properties. In this work we simulate the Raman spectra of hexachlorobenzene and benzene, and figure out the vibration mode of each main peak. The effect on the Raman spectrum of changing substituents from H to Cl is analyzed to reveal the relations between the Raman spectra of homologues and isomers of polychlorinated benzene, which should be helpful for distinguishing one kind of polychlorinated benzene from its homologues and isomers by surface enhanced Raman scattering.
