A family of dinuclear iron (II) compounds with iminopyridine-based ligands displays selective cytotoxic activity against cancer cell lines. All compounds have IC 50 values 2-6 fold lower than that of cisplatin, and 30-90 fold lower than that of carboplatin for the tumor cell lines assayed. Comparing the IC 50 values between tumor and non-tumor cell lines, the selectivity indexes range from 3.2 to 34, compound 10, [Fe 2 (4) 2 (CH 3 CN) 4 ](BF 4 ) 4 , showing the highest selectivity. Those compounds carrying substituents on the iminopyridine ring show the same cytotoxicity as those without substituents. However, the electronic effects of the substituents on position 6 may be important for the cytotoxicity of the complexes, and consequently for their selectivity. All compounds act over DNA, promoting cuts on both strands in the presence of reactive oxygen species. Since compound 10 presented the highest selectivity, its cytotoxic effect was further characterized. It induces apoptosis, affects cell cycle phase distribution in a cell-dependent manner, and its cytotoxic effect is linked to reactive oxygen species generation. In addition, it decreases tumor cell migration, showing potential antimetastatic effects. These properties make compound 10 a good lead antitumor agent among all compounds studied here.

Herein we describe a new method for the determination of the surface temperature of magnetically heated nanoparticles in solution using the temperature dependency of the catalytic performances of iron carbide nanoparticles coated with ruthenium (Fe 2.2 C@Ru) for acetophenone hydrodeoxygenation. A correlation between nanoparticle surface temperature and magnetic field could be established. Very high surface temperatures could be estimated in different solvents, which were also found similar at a given magnetic field and well above some solvent boiling points.

Activation of H-H, Si-H, and C-H bonds through σ-bond coordination has grown in the past 30 years from a scientific curiosity to an important tool in the functionalization of hydrocarbons. Several mechanisms were discovered via which the initially σ-bonded substrate could be converted: oxidative addition, heterolytic cleavage, σ-bond metathesis, electrophilic attack, etc. The use of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in this area is a more recent development, but obviously nanoparticles offer a much richer basis than classical homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for tuning reactivity for such a demanding process as C-H functionalization. Here, we will review the surface chemistry of nanoparticles and catalytic reactions occurring in the liquid phase, catalyzed by either colloidal or supported metal NPs. We consider nanoparticles prepared in solution, which are stabilized and tuned by polymers, ligands, and supports. The question we have addressed concerns the differences and similarities between molecular complexes and metal NPs in their reactivity toward σ-bond activation and functionalization.

Magnetic heating has recently been demonstrated as an efficient way to perform catalytic reactions after deposition of the heating agent and the catalyst on a support. Here we show that in solution, and under mild conditions of mean temperature and pressure, it is possible to use magnetic heating to carry out transformations that are otherwise performed heterogeneously at high pressure and/or high temperature. As a proof of concept, we chose the hydrodeoxygenation of acetophenone derivatives and of biomass-derived molecules, namely furfural and hydroxymethylfurfural. These reactions are difficult, require heterogeneous catalysts and high pressures, and, to the best of our knowledge, have no precedent in standard solution. Here, hydrodeoxygenations are fully selective under mild conditions (3 bar H 2 , moderate mean temperature of the solvent). The reason for this reactivity is the fast heating of the particles well above the boiling temperature of the solvent and the local creation of hot spots surrounded by a vapor layer, in which high temperature and pressure may be present. Key findings regarding the effects of ligand preorganisation via halogen bonding on the outcome of reactions at rhodium are reported. An unprecedented halogen bonding-mediated oxidative addition of CAr-I bonds to rhodium with efficient formation of cyclometallated species deserves special mention.

Herein we present ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru-NPs) stabilized with two rigid NHC ligands derived from cholesterol. The obtained nanoparticles were fully characterized and applied in the hydrogenation of various aromatic compounds under mild conditions. Interestingly, the more bulky ligand gives a slightly lower ligand coverage and a faster catalyst.

The asymmetric allylic alkylation of rac-1,3-diphenyl-3-acetoxyprop-1-ene (I) catalysed by palladium and diverse phosphorus containing ligands [(S)-BINAP, (R,R)-Chiraphite and (R,R)-Et-Duphos] in an ionic liquid [HDBU][OAc] was successfully performed, achieving full conversions and up to 96% ee of the (S)-product when (R,R)-Et-Duphos was used as a ligand. The reaction could be performed using an equimolar amount of substrate, malonate and base DBU, in which case the total products sum to the desired alkylated product and the ionic pair [HDBU][OAc]; this system thus produces its own IL solvent as the only co-product. These catalytic systems were active in recycling experiments for up to four cycles, albeit with a loss of activity due to the poor retention of palladium in the ionic liquid. The catalytic performance of each Pd/ligand system was optimized by varying the ratio of the substrate and malonate. Systems based on [HDBU][OAc] were found to be the best.

The use of halogen bonding as a tool to construct a catalyst backbone is reported. Specifically, pyridyl- and iodotetrafluoroaryl-substituted phosphines were assembled in the presence of a rhodium(i) precursor to form the corresponding halogen-bonded complex XBphos-Rh . The presence of fluorine substituents at the iodo-containing supramolecular motif was not necessary for halogen bonding to occur due to the template effect exerted by the rhodium center during formation of the halogen-bonded complex. The halogen-bonded supramolecular complexes were successfully tested in the catalytic hydroboration of terminal alkynes.

Soluble platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) ligated by two different long-chain N-heterocyclic carbenes (LC-IPr and LC-IMe) were synthesized and fully characterized by TEM, high-resolution TEM, wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and solution NMR. The surface chemistry of these NPs (Pt@LC-IPr and Pt@LC-IMe) was investigated by FT-IR and solid state NMR using CO as a probe molecule. A clear influence of the bulkiness of the N-substituents on the size, surface state, and catalytic activity of these Pt NPs was observed. While Pt@LC-IMe showed no activity in the hydroboration of phenylacetylene, Pt@LC-IPr revealed good selectivity for the trans-isomer, which may be supported by a homogeneous species. The synthesis of iridium nanoparticles (IrNPs) ligated by various secondary phosphine oxides (SPOs) is described. This highly reproducible and simple method via H 2 reduction produces well dispersed, small nanoparticles (NPs), which were characterized by the state-of-the-art techniques, such as TEM, HRTEM, WAXS and ATR FT-IR spectroscopy. In particular, multinuclear solid state MAS-NMR spectroscopy with and without cross polarization (CP) enabled us to investigate the different binding modes adopted by the ligand at the nanoparticle surface, suggesting the presence of three possible types of coordination: as a purely anionic ligand Ir-P(O)R 2 , as a neutral acid R 2 P-O-H and as a monoanionic bidentate H-bonded dimer R 2 P-O-HO[double bond, length as m-dash]PR 2 . Specifically, the higher basicity of the dicyclohexyl system leads to the formation of IrNPs in which the bidentate binding mode is most abundant. Such cyclohexyl groups are bent towards the edges, as is suggested by the study of 13 CO coordination on the NP surface. This study also showed that the number of surface sites on faces available for bridging CO molecules is higher than the number of sites for terminal CO species on edges and apices, which is unexpected taking into account the small size of the nanoparticles. In addition, the IrNPs present a high chemoselectivity in the hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to the unsaturated alcohol.

Thanks to new water-soluble Ru nanoparticles (NPs) stabilized by sulfonated NHC ligands, we demonstrate that it is possible to monitor the catalyst/substrate interaction using NMR chemical shift perturbations (CSPs), under conditions that closely resemble those applied during the enantiospecific C-H deuteration of l-lysine. Correlating the pH dependence of the interaction of l-lysine with the surface of the RuNPs and its subsequent deuteration, our study underscores the importance of oriented binding to the surface as a critical factor for H/D exchange.

A new methodology has been developed for the synthesis of highly substituted nitrogen heterocycles such as pyrazines and imidazoles starting from α-diketones using phosphine supported ruthenium nanoparticles (RuNPs) as catalysts. Ruthenium nanoparticles Ru1-Ru4 supported with different phosphines such as dbdocphos, dppp, DPEphos, and Xantphos are screened, of which Ru1 and Ru4 are found to be the most active. Interestingly, aryl-substituted and alkyl-substituted α-diketones produced different products: namely, pyrazine and imidazoles, respectively. This reaction methodology has been applied to the synthesis of a key intermediate (2m) of the marine cytotoxic natural product Dragmacidin B and an estrogen receptor (2l). This work represents the first examples of pyrazines prepared by RuNPs.

A specific secondary phosphine oxide (SPO) ligand (tert-butyl(phenyl)phosphine oxide) was employed to generate two iridium catalysts, an Ir-SPO complex and IrNPs (iridium nanoparticles) ligated with SPO ligands, which were compared mutually and with several supported iridium catalysts with the aim to establish the differences in their catalytic properties. The Ir-SPO-based catalysts showed totally different activities and selectivities in the hydrogenation of various substituted aldehydes, in which H 2 is likely cleaved by a metal-ligand cooperation, that is, the SPO ligand and a neighboring metal centre operate in tandem to activate the hydrogen molecule. In addition, the supported IrNPs behave very differently from both Ir-SPO catalysts. For the first time, supramolecular helical rods composed of an achiral metal complex and a complementary enantiopure monomer provided a good level of enantioinduction in asymmetric catalysis. Mixtures containing an achiral ligand monomer (BTA(PPh2), 2 mol %) and an enantiopure ligand-free comonomer (ester BTA, 2.5 mol %), both possessing a complementary benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) central unit, were investigated in combination with [Rh(cod)2]BArF (1 mol %) in the asymmetric hydrogenation of dimethyl itaconate. Notably, efficient chirality transfer occurs within the hydrogen-bonded coassemblies formed by BTA Ile and the intrinsically achiral catalytic rhodium catalyst, providing the hydrogenation product with up to 85% ee. The effect of the relative content of BTA Ile as compared to the ligand was investigated. The amount of chiral comonomer can be decreased down to one-fourth of that of the ligand without deteriorating the enantioselectivity of the reaction, while the enantioselectivity decreases for mixtures containing high amounts of BTA Ile. The nonlinear relationship between the amount of chiral comonomer and the enantioselectivity indicates that chirality amplification effects are at work in this catalytic system. Also, right-handed helical rods are formed upon co-assembly of the achiral rhodium complex of BTA(PPh2) and the enantiopure comonomer BTA Ile as confirmed by various spectroscopic and scattering techniques. Remarkably, the major enantiomer and the selectivity of the catalytic reaction are related to the handedness and the net helicity of the coassemblies, respectively. Further development of this class of catalysts built on chirally amplified helical scaffolds should contribute to the design of asymmetric catalysts operating with low amounts of chiral entities.

A series of imino- and amino-pyridine ligands based on dihydrobenzofurobenzofuran (BFBF) and methanodibenzodioxocine (DBDOC) backbones have been synthesized. These ligands form exclusively dinuclear complexes with metals such as iron(II) and copper(II). The structures for complexes 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, and 24 were determined by X-ray crystallography. The complexes show large distances for the metal nuclei and different geometries depending on the nature of the metal. An octahedral geometry was observed for the iron(II) complexes, while copper(II) complex 24 showed a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry. The iron(II) complexes showed activity as catalysts in the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides, obtaining moderate yields of cyclic carbonates.

Air-stable and homogeneous gold nanoparticles (AuNPs, 1a-5a) ligated by various secondary phosphine oxides (SPOs), [R(1)R(2)P(O)H] (R(1) = Naph, R(2) = (t)Bu, L1; R(1) = R(2) = Ph, L2; R(1) = Ph, R(2) = Naph, L3; R(1) = R(2) = Et, L4; R(1) = R(2) = Cy, L5; R(1) = R(2) = (t)Bu, L6), with different electronic and steric properties were synthesized via NaBH4 reduction of the corresponding Au(I)-SPO complex. These easily accessible ligands allow the formation of well dispersed and small nanoparticles (size 1.2-2.2 nm), which were characterized by the use of a wide variety of techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, UV-vis, energy-dispersive X-ray, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR), and cross polarization magic angle spinning (CP MAS) NMR spectroscopy. A pronounced ligand effect was found, and CP MAS NMR experiments enabled us to probe important differences in the polarity of the P-O bond of the SPOs coordinated to the nanoparticle surface depending on the type of substituents in the ligand. AuNPs containing aryl SPOs carry only SPO anions and are highly selective for aldehyde hydrogenation. AuNPs of similar size made with alkyl SPOs contain also SPOH, hydrogen bonded to SPO anions. As a consequence they contain less Au(I) and more Au(0), as is also evidenced by XPS. They are less selective and active in aldehyde hydrogenation and now show the typical activity of Au(0)NPs in nitro group hydrogenation.

The reaction of [CuI(HSC6 H4 PPh2 )]2 with NaBH4 in CH2 Cl2 /EtOH led to air- and moisture-stable copper hydride nanoparticles (CuNPs) containing phosphinothiolates as new ligands, one of which was isolated by crystallization. The X-ray crystal structure of [Cu18 H7 L10 I] (L=(-) S(C6 H4 )PPh2 ) shows unprecedented features in its 28-atom framework (18 Cu and 10 S atoms). Seven hydrogen atoms, in hydride form, are needed for charge balance and were located by density functional theory methods. The design of artificial catalysts able to compete with the catalytic proficiency of enzymes is an intense subject of research. Non-covalent interactions are thought to be involved in several properties of enzymatic catalysis, notably (i) the confinement of the substrates and the active site within a catalytic pocket, (ii) the creation of a hydrophobic pocket in water, (iii) self-replication properties and (iv) allosteric properties. The origins of the enhanced rates and high catalytic selectivities associated with these properties are still a matter of debate. Stabilisation of the transition state and favourable conformations of the active site and the product(s) are probably part of the answer. We present here artificial catalysts and biomacromolecule hybrid catalysts which constitute good models towards the development of truly competitive artificial enzymes.

Supramolecular catalysis is a rapidly expanding discipline which has benefited from the development of both homogeneous catalysis and supramolecular chemistry. The properties of classical metal and organic catalysts can now be carefully tailored by means of several suitable approaches and the choice of reversible interactions such as hydrogen bond, metal-ligand, electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. The first part of these two subsequent reviews will be dedicated to catalytic systems for which non-covalent interactions between the partners of the reaction have been designed although mimicking enzyme properties has not been intended. Ligand, metal, organocatalyst, substrate, additive, and metal counterion are reaction partners that can be held together by non-covalent interactions. The resulting catalysts possess unique properties compared to analogues lacking the assembling properties. Depending on the nature of the reaction partners involved in the interactions, distinct applications have been accomplished, mainly (i) the building of bidentate ligand libraries (intra ligand-ligand), (ii) the building of di- or oligonuclear complexes (inter ligand-ligand), (iii) the alteration of the coordination spheres of a metal catalyst (ligand-ligand additive), and (iv) the control of the substrate reactivity (catalyst-substrate). More complex systems that involve the cooperative action of three reaction partners have also been disclosed. In this review, special attention will be given to supramolecular catalysts for which the observed catalytic activity and/or selectivity have been imputed to non-covalent interaction between the reaction partners. Additional features of these catalysts are the easy modulation of the catalytic performance by modifying one of their building blocks and the development of new catalytic pathways/reactions not achievable with classical covalent catalysts.

The synthesis of air-stable and homogeneous gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) employing tert-butyl(naphthalen-1-yl)phosphine oxide as supporting ligand is described via NaBH4 reduction of a Au(I) precursor, [(tert-butyl(naphthalen-1-yl)phosphine oxide)AuCl]2. This highly reproducible and simple procedure furnishes small (1.24 ± 0.16 nm), highly soluble nanoparticles that are found to be highly active catalysts for the hydrogenation of substituted aldehydes, giving high conversions and chemoselectivities for a wide variety of substrates. In addition to catalytic studies the role of the novel stabilizer in the remarkable activity and selectivity exhibited by this system was interrogated thoroughly using a wide range of techniques, including ATR FT-IR, HRMAS NMR, XPS, and EDX spectroscopy. In particular, isotopic labeling experiments enabled us to probe the coordination mode adopted by the SPO ligand bound to the nanoparticle surface by ATR FT-IR spectroscopy. In combination with a series of control experiments we speculate that the SPO ligand demonstrates ligand-metal cooperative effects and plays a seminal role in the heterolytic hydrogenation mechanism.

Chiral benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) ligands, comprising one diphenylphosphino group and one or two remote chiral 1-methylheptyl side chains, were evaluated in the rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of dimethyl itaconate. Despite the fact that the rhodium atom and the chiral center(s) are separated by more than 12 covalent bonds, up to 82% ee was observed. A series of control and spectroscopic experiments confirmed that the selectivity arises from the formation of chiral helical polymers by self-association of the BTA monomers through noncovalent interactions. The addition of a phosphine-free chiral BTA, acting as a comonomer for the chiral BTA ligands, increases the level of enantioselectivity (up to 88% ee). It illustrates how the selectivity of the reaction can be increased in a simple fashion by mixing two different BTA monomers. The concept was further probed by performing the same experiment with an achiral BTA ligand, i.e. a phosphine-functionalized BTA that contains two remote octyl side chains. It afforded an encouraging 31% ee, thus demonstrating the catalytically relevant transfer of chirality between the self-assembled units. It constitutes a unique example of the sergeants-and-soldiers principle applied to catalysis.

Ligands, Lewis bases that coordinate to the metal center in a complex, can completely change the catalytic behavior of the metal center. In this Account, we summarize new reactions enabled by a single class of ligands, phosphine-sulfonates (ortho-phosphinobenzenesulfonates). Using their palladium complexes, we have developed four unusual reactions, and three of these have produced novel types of polymers. In one case, we have produced linear high-molecular weight polyethylene, a type of polymer that group 10 metal catalysts do not typically produce. Secondly, complexes using these ligands catalyzed the formation of linear poly(ethylene-co-polar vinyl monomers). Before the use of phosphine-sulfonate catalysts, researchers could only produce ethylene/polar monomer copolymers that have different branched structures rather than linear ones, depending on whether the polymers were produced by a radical polymerization or a group 10 metal catalyzed coordination polymerization. Thirdly, these phosphine-sulfonate catalysts produced nonalternating linear poly(ethylene-co-carbon monoxide). Radical polymerization gives ethylene-rich branched ethylene/CO copolymers copolymers. Prior to the use of phosphine-sulfonates, all of the metal catalyzed processes gave completely alternating ethylene/carbon monoxide copolymers. Finally, we produced poly(polar vinyl monomer-alt-carbon monoxide), a copolymerization of common polar monomers with carbon monoxide that had not been previously reported. Although researchers have often used symmetrical bidentate ligands such as diimines for the polymerization catalysis, phosphine-sulfonates are unsymmetrical, containing two nonequivalent donor units, a neutral phosphine, and an anionic sulfonate. We discuss the features that make this ligand unique. In order to understand all of the new reactions facilitated by this special ligand, we discuss both the steric effect of the bulky phosphines and electronic effects. We provide a unified interpretation of the unique reactivity by considering of the net charge and the enhanced back donation in the phosphine-sulfonate complexes.

Wide bite angle diphosphine ligands were used to prepare [(diphosphine)M(2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine)](2+) complexes (M = Pd, Pt). Except for the ligand with the largest bite angle, 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine coordinates in a bidentate mode leading to bis-chelate complexes. In the case of Xantphos (9,9-dimethyl-4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-xanthene, βn = 111°) two types of complexes are formed, in which 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine coordinates in a mono- or bidentate fashion, respectively. The crystal structures of three of the Pt complexes were determined. The X-ray crystal structure of [(Xantphos)-Pt(2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine)](2+) shows that Xantphos coordinates in a tridentate P,O,P fashion. Under dihydrogen pressure, the pyridyl moiety in the platinum complexes can de-coordinate to provide a vacant coordination site at the metal center. Furthermore it can act as an internal base to assist the heterolytic cleavage of dihydrogen. The reaction yields a platinum hydride with a protonated pyridine moiety in close proximity to one another. The structure as well as the reactivity of the complexes towards dihydrogen is governed by the steric requirements of the diphosphines. The crystal structure of [(dppf)PtH(2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridinium)](OTf)2 has been determined. Palladium complexes containing DPEphos or Xantphos decompose under dihydrogen pressure. In the case of dppf slow heterolytic splitting of dihydrogen occurs to form the hydride complex [(dppf)PdH(2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridinium)](OTf)2 which contains a protonated 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine ligand. In solution, this compound slowly undergoes P-C bond cleavage of the 2-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine ligand to form [(dppf)Pd(PHPh2)(η(1)-C5H4NH)](OTf)2. When the 6-methyl-2-pyridyldiphenylphosphine ligand is used, the reaction of the palladium complex with dihydrogen is very fast and the hydride complex immediately rearranges to the diphenylphosphino compound resulting from P-C bond cleavage.

Catalytic asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of rac-furoin and furil produces hydrofuroin with up to 99% ee and 9:1 dr. This reaction provides an exceptionally easy access to optically active hydrofuroins in two straightforward steps from biomass-derived furfural (global production 200,000-300,000 t annually) using benzoin condensation.

A new method of creating libraries of chiral diphosphines is presented. Supramolecular coordination compounds based on Ti, Rh, achiral ditopic ligands, and chiral diols were synthesized by in situ mixing and used as catalysts in the asymmetric hydrogenation of (Z)-methyl 2-acetamido-3-phenylacrylate, giving ee's of up to 92%. The ditopic ligands contain a Schiff base that coordinates to the assembly metal Ti and a phosphine as a ligand for Rh. Chirality is introduced by coordination of the chiral diols to Ti. The controlling chiral center and the substrate are separated by as much as 13 Å.

Chelating diphosphines were constructed using dinuclear Zn(II) complexes of Robson macrocycles (Zn-RMCs) as templates. The assembly process is driven by the interaction between the metal centers (Lewis acids) with anionic and neutral Lewis base-functionalized monophosphines. The stability of the final structure depends on the geometry and the affinity of the functional groups of the ditopic phosphines and on the structure of the RMC. In the free ligand the ditopic phosphines coordinate at opposite faces of the pseudo-planar macrocycle as is shown in the molecular structure of several of the assemblies, according to X-ray diffraction. Pre-organization of the system by coordinating the phosphorus atoms to a transition metal center enforced coordination of the functional groups at the same face of the RMC. For several templated diphosphines cis-PtCl(2) complexes were identified by NMR. The in situ assembled diphosphines showed a chelating effect in the rhodium catalyzed hydroformylation of 1-octene. Combination of Zn-RMC 3 and phosphine A gave the highest l/b ratio (13) in acetonitrile.

Self-assembly and characterization of novel heterodimeric diphosphine capsules formed by multiple ionic interactions and composed of one tetracationic diphosphine ligand and one complementary tetraanionic calix[4]arene are described. Encapsulation of a palladium atom within a diphosphine capsule is achieved successfully by using the metal complex of the tetracationic diphosphine ligand for the assembly process. In this templated approach to metal encapsulation, the transition-metal complex is an integrated part of the capsule with the transition metal located inside the capsule and is not involved in the assembly process. We present two approaches for capsule assembly by mixing solutions of the precharged building blocks in methanol and mixing solutions of the neutral building blocks in methanol. The scope of the diphosphine capsules and the metallodiphosphine capsules is easily extended by applying tetracationic diphosphine ligands with different backbones (ethylene, diphenyl ether, and xanthene) and cationic binding motifs (p-C(6)H(4)-CH(2)-ammonium, m-C(6)H(4)-ammonium, and m-C(6)H(4)-guanidinium). Self-assembly and characterization of heterodimeric diphosphine capsules formed by multiple ionic interactions are described. The first type of capsules is composed of one novel tetrasulfonato-xantphos ligand and one complementary tetraammonium calix[4]arene. Encapsulation of a transition metal is achieved by self-assembly of a rhodium complex containing the tetraanionic diphosphine ligand and a tetracationic calix[4]arene. The second type of capsules is composed of two oppositely charged diphosphine ligands: one tetrasulfonato-xantphos and one tetraammonium-diphosphine (of the xantphos-, DPEphos-, and 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe)-type). Bis(metallo) capsules, that is, simultaneous encapsulation of two different transition metals, are created by self-assembly of a palladium or platinum complex containing a tetracationic ligand and a rhodium complex containing a tetraanionic ligand. Butadiene and methanol were telomerised in the presence of palladium catalysts with ligands containing 8-diphenylphosphinochromane-like substituents at phosphorus. Supramolecular strategies, based on hydrogen bonds and ionic interactions, were investigated as tools for the recovery and recycling of homogeneous transition-metal catalysts by using reverse-flow adsorption (RFA) technology. The association (in solution) and adsorption (on support) of new functionalized host materials and phosphine guest ligands, functionalized with the complementary binding motifs, were fine-tuned for the application of these materials in a RFA reactor. The RFA technology for process-integrated recycling of homogeneous catalysts using these tailor-made phosphine ligands and silica-supported host materials resulted in a stable, semicontinuous catalytic system. Rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of methyl acetamidoacrylate and asymmetric hydrosilylation of acetophenone were studied as test reactions. A family of four biscarbamates (AA) and four bisphenols (DD) were synthesized, and H-bonding interactions between all AA•DD combinations were characterized using (1)H NMR titrations in carbon tetrachloride. A chemical double mutant cycle analysis shows that there are no secondary electrostatic interactions or allosteric cooperativity in these systems, and the system therefore provides an ideal platform for investigating the relationship between chemical structure and chelate cooperativity. Effective molarities (EMs) were measured for 12 different systems, where the number of rotors in the chains connecting the two H-bond sites was varied from 5 to 20. The association constants vary by less than an order of magnitude for all 12 complexes, and the variation in EM is remarkably small (0.1-0.9 M). The results provide a relationship between EM and the number of rotors in the connecting chains (r): EM ≈ 10r(-3/2). The value of 10 M is the upper limit for the value of EM for a noncovalent intramolecular interaction. Introduction of rotors reduces the value of EM from this maximum in accord with a random walk analysis of the encounter probability of the chain ends (r(-3/2)). Noncovalent EMs never reach the very high values observed for covalent processes, which places limitations on the magnitudes of the effects that one is likely to achieve through the use of chelate cooperativity in supramolecular assembly and catalysis. On the other hand, the decrease in EM due to the introduction of conformational flexibility is less dramatic than one might expect based on the behavior of covalent systems, which limits the losses in binding affinity caused by poor preorganization of the interaction sites.

New diphosphines based on benzofurobenzofuran and dibenzodioxocin backbones, forming exclusively bimetallic complexes were designed and synthesized. Depending on the ligand to metal ratio, face-to-face bimetallic complexes or syn-chloride bridged dimeric complexes were formed as main reaction products. The structures of the rhodium complexes of the new ligands 4, 7, 10, 13, 16 were established in solution by NMR, IR, and MS spectroscopy. The molecular structures of the syn-chloride bridged dimeric complexes [Rh(2)(CO)(2)(mu-Cl)(2)(4)] (22), [Rh(2)(CO)(2)(mu-Cl)(2)(10)] (24), and the face-to-face bimetallic complexes [Rh(CO)Cl(4)](2) (17), [Rh(CO)Cl(10)](2) (19), and [Rh(CO)Cl(13)](2) (20) were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Ligands 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, and SPANphos were tested in rhodium catalyzed methanol carbonylation at 150 degrees C and 22 bar of CO gas, showing high activities under catalytic conditions.

A series of bulky phosphines containing substituted biphenyl, 2-methylnaphthyl, or 2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene moiety were prepared. They were used in the preparation of new monophosphine-palladium(0)-dvds complexes, which were employed as catalysts for the selective telomerization of 1,3-butadiene with methanol to obtain 1-methoxyocta-2,7-diene (1-MOD), the key intermediate in the Dow 1-octene process. Several ligands showed improved selectivity and yield compared to that of the benchmark ligand PPh(3). Especially 2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthen-4-yl-diphenylphosphine (4, "mono-xantphos") stands out as an excellent ligand in terms of yield, selectivity, and stability.

Catalytic reactions of C-C and C-X bond formation are discussed in this critical review with particular emphasis on cross coupling reactions catalyzed by palladium and wide bite angle bidentate diphosphine ligands. Especially those studies have been collected that allow comparison of the ligand bite angles for the selected ligands: dppp, BINAP, dppf, DPEphos and Xantphos. Similarities with hydrocyanation and CO/ethene/MeOH reactions have been highlighted, while rhodium hydroformylation has been mentioned as a contrasting example, in which predictability is high and steric and electronic effects follow smooth trends. In palladium catalysis wide bite angles and bulkiness of the ligands facilitate generally the reductive elimination thus giving more efficient cross coupling catalysis (174 references).

We report SUPRAphos-based rhodium catalysts that are unusually regioselective in the hydroformylation of styrene at low temperatures (40 degrees C) producing mainly the linear aldehyde (72%). This ligand-specific phenomenon is observed for two rhodium catalysts with heterobidentate phosphine-phosphoramidite ligands. We propose that the high selectivity for the linear product is caused by enhanced beta-hydride elimination, due to specific substrate-ligand interactions, most likely pi-pi interactions.

The synthesis of the calix[4]arene-based P,N-ligand 3 (5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25-[(2-quinolylmethyl)oxy]-26,27,28-(mu3-phosphorustrioxy)calix[4]arene), in which the nitrogen atom-containing moiety has been introduced at the lower rim of the cavity prior to P-functionalisation, is described and its coordination properties investigated. In the crystal structure, the calix[4]-cavity adopts a cone conformation with an exo orientation of the phosphorus lone pair enabling P-N chelation. 1H, 13C, 31P and 1H{15N} HMQC NMR spectra indicated that, in complexes [PdCl(CH3)(3)] (4) and [Rh(CO)Cl(3)] (5), ligand 3 coordinates in a chelating fashion, while in cis-[PtC12(3)2] (6) and [Rh(acac)(CO)(3)] (7) it behaves as a monodentate ligand, coordinating via the phosphorus atom only. X-Ray crystal structure determinations were performed for [PdCl(CH3)(3)] (4) and cis-[PtCl2(3)2] (6). The cationic Pd complex [Pd(CH3)(CH3CN)(3)][PF5] (8) was found to be active in a CO/ethylene copolymerisation reaction. Good selectivities were observed for the Pd-catalysed allylic alkylation of cinnamyl acetate with in situ prepared catalysts. [Rh(acac)(CO)2] modified with ligand 3 catalyses the hydroformylation of 1-octene with low selectivities towards linear aldehydes. High-pressure NMR experiments on the hydrido carbonyl rhodium(3) were inconclusive, different species were formed.

Various routes for the synthesis of polymer-bound phosphites and phosphoramidites have been investigated. In the presence of a suitable activator the supported phosphoramidites react cleanly with alcohols to give the corresponding monodentate phosphite ligands in solution. We have applied this novel solid-phase route in the parallel synthesis of several monodentate chiral and achiral phosphite ligands.

The rate-determining step in the hydroformylation of 1-octene, catalysed by the rhodium-Xantphos catalyst system, was determined by using a combination of experimentally determined (1)H/(2)H and (12)C/(13)C kinetic isotope effects and a theoretical approach. From the rates of hydroformylation and deuterioformylation, a small (1)H/(2)H isotope effect of 1.2 was determined for the hydride moiety of the rhodium catalyst. (12)C/(13)C isotope effects of 1.012(1) and 1.012(3) for the alpha-carbon and beta-carbon atoms of 1-octene were determined, respectively. Both quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) and full quantum mechanics calculations were carried out on the key catalytic steps, for "real-world" ligand systems, to clarify whether alkene coordination or hydride migration is the rate-determining step. Our calculations (21.4 kcal mol(-1)) quantitatively reproduce the experimental energy barrier for CO dissociation (20.1 kcal mol(-1)) starting at the (bisphosphane)RhH(CO)(2) resting state. The barrier for hydride migration lies 3.8 kcal mol(-1) higher than the barrier for CO dissociation (experimentally determined trend approximately 3 kcal mol(-1)). The computed (1)H/(2)H and (12)C/(13)C kinetic isotope effects corroborate the results of the energy analysis.

The template-induced formation of chelating bidentate ligands by the selective self-assembly of two monodentate pyridyl phosphorus ligands on a rigid bis-zinc(II) salphen template with two identical binding sites was studied. Using UV-vis, NMR-spectroscopy and X-ray analysis the formed structures were unambiguously proven. The application of these templated bidentate ligands in transition metal catalysis showed, in most cases, typical bidentate character. Compared to previous work based on a more flexible bis-zinc(II) porphyrin template, the current catalytic data suggest that the rigidity of the template is not an important factor for the improvement of the regio- and enantioselectivity under the applied reaction conditions.

High-throughput screening of the SUPRAphos library revealed a palladium catalyst based on supramolecular ligands that gave fast and highly efficient kinetic resolution of cyclohexenyl acetate with an S-value up to 12.

Selective metal-ligand interactions have been used to prepare supramolecular bidentate ligands by mixing monodentate ligands with a suitable template. For these assemblies pyridine phosphorus ligands and a zinc(II) porphyrin dimer were used. In the rhodium-catalysed hydroformylation of 1-octene and styrene improved selectivities have been obtained for some of the assembled bidentate ligand systems. In the palladium catalysed asymmetric allylic alkylation similar effects were observed; the enantioselectivity increased by using a bisporphyrin template. The preparation of supramolecular catalyst systems was also explored using tin-oxygen interactions. Dihydroxotin(IV) porphyrin and carboxylic phosphorus ligands assemble into supramolecular ligands and the phosphorus donor atom coordinates to transition metals. The stronger oxygen-tin bond, compared to pyridine-zinc does not result in a better performance of the catalyst.

Novel transition metal catalysts based on oligonucleotides can be easily obtained by functionalization of 5-iodouridine with phosphine ligands, resulting in good asymmetric induction in palladium catalyzed allylic nucleophilic substitution.

The origin of the chemoselectivity of palladium catalysts containing bidentate phosphine ligands toward either methoxycarbonylation of ethene or the copolymerization of ethene and carbon monoxide was investigated using density functional theory based calculations. For a palladium catalyst containing the electron-donating bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane (dmpe) ligand, the rate determining step for chain propagation is shown to be the insertion of ethene into the metal-acyl bond. The high barrier for chain propagation is attributed to the low stability of the ethene intermediate, (dmpe)Pd(ethene)(C(O)CH3). For the competing methanolysis process, the most likely pathway involves the formation of (dmpe)Pd(CH3OH)(C(O)CH3) via dissociative ligand exchange, followed by a solvent mediated proton-transfer/reductive- elimination process. The overall barrier for this process is higher than the barrier for ethene insertion into the palladium-acetyl bond, in line with the experimentally observed preference of this type of catalyst toward the formation of polyketone. Electronic bite angle effects on the rates of ethene insertion and ethanoyl methanolysis were evaluated using four electronically and sterically related ligands (Me)2P(CH2)nP(Me)2 (n = 1-4). Steric effects were studied for larger tert-butyl substituted ligands using a QM/MM methodology. The results show that ethene coordination to the metal center and subsequent insertion into the palladium-ethanoyl bond are disfavored by the addition of steric bulk around the metal center. Key intermediates in the methanolysis mechanism, on the other hand, are stabilized because of electronic effects caused by increasing the bite angle of the diphosphine ligand. The combined effects explain successfully which ligands give polymer and which ones give methyl propionate as the major products of the reaction.

An ionic interaction has been used for the first time to assemble monophosphane ligands. NMR spectroscopy and X-ray studies show that cationic and anionic triphenylphosphane derivatives form ion pairs and subsequently act as a ligand in various transition-metal complexes. The position of the ionic functional groups allows both cis and trans coordination of the novel assembly ligand in square-planar transition-metal complexes.

We report the template-induced formation of chelating heterobidentate ligands by the selective self-assembly of two different monodentate ligands on a rigid bis-zinc(II)-salphen template with two identical binding sites; these templated heterobidentate ligands induce much higher enantioselectivities (up to 72% ee) in the rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric hydroformylation of styrene than any of the corresponding homobidentate ligands or non-templated mixed ligand combinations (up to 13% ee).

The application of phenoxaphosphino-modified Xantphos-type ligands (1-9) in the rhodium-catalyzed hydroaminomethylation of internal olefins to give linear amines is reported. Excellent chemo- and regioselectivities have been obtained through the use of 0.1 mol % [Rh(cod)2]BF(4)/0.4 mol % xantphenoxaphos (1), providing a practical and environmentally attractive synthetic route for the preparation of amines from internal alkenes. For the first time, both functionalized internal olefins and mixtures of internal and terminal olefins have been converted highly selectively into linear amines. Investigations of the effects of the calculated natural bite angles of ligands on hydroaminomethylation shows that the regioselectivity for the linear product follows a similar trend to that seen in the hydroformylation of internal alkenes with the aid of these ligands. Hydroaminomethylation and each of its individual steps were monitored by high-pressure infrared spectroscopy. The results suggest that hydroaminomethylations take place by a sequential isomerization/hydroformylation/amination/hydrogenation pathway.

A series of cationic palladium complexes of general formula [Pd(Me)(MeCN)(N-N)][PF(6)] (N-N = (phen) 1 a, 4,7-dichloro-1,10-phenanthroline (4,7-Cl(2)-phen) 2 a, 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (4,7-Ph(2)-phen) 3 a, 4-methyl-1,10-phenanthroline (4-Me-phen) 4 a, 4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (4,7-Me(2)-phen) 5 a, 5,5,6,6-tetrafluoro-5,6-dihydro-1,10-phenanthroline (F(4)-phen) 6 a, containing different substituted phenanthroline ligands, have been prepared from the corresponding neutral chloro derivatives [Pd(Me)(Cl)(N-N)], (1 b-6 b). The X-ray crystal structure of [Pd(Cl)(2)(4,7-Cl(2)-phen)] (2 b') was determined. DFT calculations show that the electron density on the metal is tuned by the substituents on the ligands. The catalytic behavior of complexes 1 a-6 a in the CO/styrene and CO/p-Me-styrene copolymerizations was studied in detail, showing that the generated catalysts are active for at least 90 h, yielding copolymers of high molecular weight. A firm correlation between the electron density on palladium on the one hand and the catalytic activity of the complexes and the molecular weight and the stereochemistry of the polyketones synthesized on the other hand has been established: the catalyst containing the F(4)-phen is thus far the most active among those tested, yielding the syndiotactic CO/styrene copolymer with a stereoregularity of 96 % (uu triad) and with an M(w) value of 1 000 000.
