Thin-film membranes of Pd-Ag and Pd-Cu alloys capable of releasing hydrogen in a wide temperature range have been developed. The surface activation of the membranes with a nanostructured coating made it possible to intensify hydrogen transport through Pd-containing membranes at low temperatures. This effect was achieved by accelerating limiting surface processes by increasing the active area of the membrane. Surface-activated membranes demonstrated the highest values of hydrogen flux over the entire temperature range, which reached up to 49.4 mmol s -1 m -2 for Pd-Ag membranes and up to 32.9 mmol s -1 m -2 for Pd-Cu membranes. Membranes modified with filiform nanoparticles demonstrated a hydrogen flux up to 12 times higher than that of membranes with a smooth surface. Based on the results obtained, a theoretical model of hydrogen transport through metal membranes was developed, taking into account the effect of the state of the membrane surface on hydrogen transport at low temperatures. This model makes it possible to predict hydrogen flows in the entire temperature range much more accurately compared to other existing models. The selectivity and stability of the developed membranes over a long period of operation have been confirmed. The study of the effect of the surface activation of Pd-based membranes on the intensification of hydrogen permeability has shown the success of the method developed, which in turn opens up wide opportunities for creating low-temperature, highly efficient membrane hydrogen filters based on palladium and other devices based on them.

The weakness of the fiber-matrix interface restricts the practical application of basalt fiber (BF) as a reinforcing material. In order to improve the interfacial adhesion between the BF and epoxy matrix, surface activation of the BF was carried out using low-pressure O 2 and H 2 -Ar plasma under various conditions. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS), evaluated by a micro-droplet de-bonding test, was adopted to demonstrate the bonding effects at the BF/epoxy interphase. Compared to bare BF, the IFSS between the modified fibers and epoxy matrix was efficiently improved with an increment of 38.4% and 14.4% for O 2 plasma and H 2 -Ar plasma treatment, respectively. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) analysis indicated that H 2 -Ar plasma-treated BF had a much rougher and more rugged surface than O 2 plasma-treated samples. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and surface energy results revealed that O 2 plasma activation could effectively increase the content of oxygenous groups on the BF surface, thus resulting in a higher total surface energy value. Based on the results, O 2 plasma modification at a power of 200 W and pressure of 80 Pa for 0.5 min was considered to be the most favorable condition for the surface activation of BF.

In this study, we examined the chemical changes occurring in ground tire rubber (GTR) and on its surface as a result of gamma irradiation in water, with low doses of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 kGy. To better distinguish the changes the radiation caused in the GTR and the surface activation of the GTR caused by the irradiated water, we also performed radiation treatments in an inert atmosphere. We mixed the treated GTRs with fresh rubber, and after vulcanization, investigated the mechanical properties and conducted dose optimization. The chemical changes occurring in GTR were characterized by Soxhlet-extraction and cross-link density measurements. Changes on the surface were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In water irradiation, cross-link density decreased (∼10 %), while in an inert atmosphere, new bonds formed between the chains (∼10 %), with negligible degradation (∼2 %) in both cases. Based on the FTIR spectra, new oxygen-containing groups appeared on the GTR surface in water treatment, while this was not observed in a nitrogen atmosphere. The increase in surface oxygen content was confirmed by XPS, showing a ∼10 % increase as a result of water treatment, while it remained unchanged in the inert atmosphere. We achieved a 30 % increase in tensile strength (5 kGy) without a decrease in elongation properties and a 32 % increase in tear strength (20 kGy) for vulcanizates containing surface-activated GTR. Mechanical properties did not improve with treatments in an inert atmosphere. Bio-based solutions for solid timber gluing have always been a very sensitive topic in wood technology. In this work, we optimize the gluing conditions of a starch-tannin formulation, which allows high performance in dry conditions and resistance to water dipping for 3 h, allowing for the D2 classification to be reached according to EN 204. It was observed that the starch-tannin formulations enhanced their performance by increasing the heating temperature, achieving satisfactory results at 140 °C for 13 min. The proportion of polyphenols in the mixture enhances the water resistance but is only tolerated until 20-30%. In particular, the addition of 10% tannin-hexamine enhances the water-resistant properties of starch for both quebracho and chestnut extract. The application of the jet of cold atmospheric plasma allows for good results with more viscous formulations, increasing their penetration in wood. Solid-state 13 C-NMR analysis was also performed, and the spectroscopic information suggests establishing a coordination complex between starch and tannin.

Fast and reliable semiconductor hydrogen sensors are crucially important for the large-scale utilization of hydrogen energy. One major challenge that hinders their practical application is the elevated temperature required, arising from undesirable surface passivation and grain-boundary-dominated electron transportation in the conventional nanocrystalline sensing layers. To address this long-standing issue, in the present work, we report a class of highly reactive and boundary-less ultrathin SnO 2 films, which are fabricated by the topochemical transformation of 2D SnO transferred from liquid Sn-Bi droplets. The ultrathin SnO 2 films are purposely made to consist of well-crystallized quasi-2D nanograins with in-plane grain sizes going beyond 30 nm, whereby the hydroxyl adsorption and grain boundary side-effects are effectively suppressed, giving rise to an activated (101)-dominating dangling-bond surface and a surface-controlled electrical transportation with an exceptional electron mobility of 209 cm 2 V -1 s -1 . Our work provides a new cost-effective strategy to disruptively improve the gas reception and transduction of SnO 2 . The proposed chemiresistive sensors exhibit fast, sensitive, and selective hydrogen sensing performance at a much-reduced working temperature of 60 °C. The remarkable sensing performance as well as the simple and scalable fabrication process of the ultrathin SnO 2 films render the thus-developed sensors attractive for long awaited practical applications in hydrogen-related industries.

Two-dimensional (2D) 1H molybdenum disulfide (1H-MoS 2 ) is hard to be directly used in energy storage devices due to its inert basal plane and unfavorable 2D stacking. This work demonstrated how the basal plane of 1H MoS 2 nanocrystals (NCs) can be activated to offer doubled specific capacitance by simple surface S depletions. Building on the expanded graphene with three-dimensional (3D) structures, as-prepared NCs were chemically grafted on the graphene surface to deliver stable energy storage and high capacitance, which overcame above challenges of 1H-MoS 2 . Metal nanoparticles have attracted considerable scientific and technological interest in recent years, most related explorations and reports are focused on transition and noble metals. However, the synthesis and application of light metal nanoparticles represented by Mg have not been fully exploited, limited by their ultrahigh reactivity in air and preparation in harsh conditions. In this work, a simple and effective one-step organic solvent-assisted ball-milling process is developed to synthesize Mg and Li nanoparticles, which permits the formation of MgH 2 in a hydrogen atmosphere in a one-step reaction process at ambient temperature. Further studies suggest that acetone chemisorbs on defects/surfaces of Mg during ball milling leading to the formation of a metastable magnesium complex, which significantly alters the physical and chemical characteristics of Mg grains. The structure and performance of polyurethane (PU) foams are strongly driven by the stoichiometry of the polyaddition reaction, quantitatively described by the isocyanate index. It determines the balance between isocyanate and hydroxyl groups in the reacting system and is affected by the introduction of additional functionalities originated, e.g., from applied fillers. Nevertheless, this issue is hardly taken into account in research works. Herein, the structure and performance of PU/ground tire rubber (GTR) composites differing in their isocyanate index (from 0.8 to 1.2) and prepared with and without considering the GTR functionalities in formulation development were investigated. Incorporating GTR into the PU matrix led to a reduction in average cell diameter (from 2 to 30% depending on the isocyanate index) compared to unfilled foams. However, formulation adjustments did not show a significant impact on cellular structure. The only decrease in open cell content was noted, from 10% for the 0.9 index to 40% for 1.2. Such changes were related to the increasing strength of the PU cellular structure able to maintain inside the increasing amount of carbon dioxide. On the other hand, considering hydroxyl values of GTR noticeably affected the thermomechanical performance of composites. The shift of glass transition temperature (T g ), even by 10 °C for 1.2 isocyanate index, enhanced the performance of materials, which was expressed in an 8-62% drop in the composite performance factor, pointing to the enhanced reinforcing effect resulting from filler incorporation. The stiffening of foams, related to the variations in PU segmental structure, also caused minor changes in the course of thermal degradation of PU/GTR composites due to the inferior thermal stability of hard segments. The obtained results provide important insights into the development of formulations of PU composites filled with materials containing reactive functional groups able to disrupt the stoichiometric balance of the polyaddition reaction.

Polyester-based scaffolds are of research interest for the regeneration of a wide spectrum of tissues. However, there is a need to improve scaffold wettability and introduce bioactivity. Surface modification is a widely studied approach for improving scaffold performance and maintaining appropriate bulk properties. In this study, three methods to functionalize the surface of the poly(lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) PLCL fibres using gelatin immobilisation were compared. Hydrolysis, oxygen plasma treatment, and aminolysis were chosen as activation methods to introduce carboxyl (-COOH) and amino (-NH 2 ) functional groups on the surface before gelatin immobilisation. To covalently attach the gelatin, carbodiimide coupling was chosen for hydrolysed and plasma-treated materials, and glutaraldehyde crosslinking was used in the case of the aminolysed samples. Materials after physical entrapment of gelatin and immobilisation using carbodiimide coupling without previous activation were prepared as controls. The difference in gelatin amount on the surface, impact on the fibres morphology, molecular weight, and mechanical properties were observed depending on the type of modification and applied parameters of activation. It was shown that hydrolysis influences the surface of the material the most, whereas plasma treatment and aminolysis have an effect on the whole volume of the material. Despite this difference, bulk mechanical properties were affected for all the approaches. All materials were completely hydrophilic after functionalization. Cytotoxicity was not recognized for any of the samples. Gelatin immobilisation resulted in improved L929 cell morphology with the best effect for samples activated with hydrolysis and plasma treatment. Our study indicates that the use of any surface activation method should be limited to the lowest concentration/reaction time that enables subsequent satisfactory functionalization and the decision should be based on a specific function that the final scaffold material has to perform.

In recent years, the demand for highly integrated and lightweight components has been rising sharply, especially in plastics processing. One strategy for weight-saving solutions is the development of conductive tracks and layouts directly on the polymer housing parts in order to be able to dispense with the system integration of additional printed circuit boards (PCB). This can be conducted very advantageously and flexibly with laser-based processes for functionalizing polymer surfaces. In this work, a three-step laser-based process for subsequent selective metallization is presented. Conventional injection molded components without special additives serve as the initial substrate. The Laser-Based Selective Activation (LSA) uses picosecond laser pulses to activate the plastic surface to subsequently deposit palladium. The focus is on determining the amount of deposited palladium in correlation to the laser and scan parameters. For the first time, the dependence of the metallization result on the accumulated laser fluence ( F acc ) is described. The treated polymer parts are characterized using optical and scanning electron microscopy as well as a contact-type profilometer.

The article presents research on the potential use of organometallic compounds with the addition of antimony (III) oxide Sb 2 O 3 as a coating additive that will make coatings susceptible to electroless metallization after prior surface irradiation with 193 nm wavelength laser radiation and a different number of laser pulses. The surface modification and activation effects were assessed by optical-imagining as well as by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive analysis (EDX). It was found that the presence of Sb 2 O 3 in the coating made it possible to reduce the content of the copper complex, causing an intensive surface ablation, resulting in the formation of a conical structure with a higher content of metallic copper nuclei.

The effect of three popular surface activation methods for a titanium oxide (titania) surface was thoroughly investigated to identify the most effective protocol for the enhancement of hydrophilicity. All the methods, namely H 2 O 2 activation, UV irradiation and oxygen plasma treatment resulted in an enhanced hydrophilic titania surface, which was evidenced by the reduced contact angle values. To study in detail the chemical and morphological features responsible for the increased hydrophilicity, the treated surfaces were submitted to inspection with atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The correlation between the treatment and titania surface hydroxylation as well as hydrophilic behavior have been discussed.

Bimetallic alloy catalysts show strong structural and compositional dependence on their activity, selectivity, and stability. Often referred to as the “synergetic effect” of two metal elements in the alloys, their detailed dynamic information, structurally and chemically, of catalyst surface under reaction conditions remains largely elusive. Here, using aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy, we visualize the atomic-scale synergetic surface activation of CuAu under a water–gas shift reaction condition. The unique “periodic” structural activation largely determines the dominating reaction pathway, which is related to a possible “carboxyl” reaction route corroborated by density functional theory–based calculation and ab initio molecular dynamics simulation. These results demonstrate how the alloy surface is activated and catalyzes the chemical reaction, which provides insights into catalyst design with atom precision.

In the cracking process of waste tires, pyrolysis carbon black (CBp), as a solid product, accounts for about 35% of the total tire rubber content. Here, the treated CBp has been gradually applied to the tire formula to improve the recycling efficiency of waste tires. This study elucidated the influence of adding CBp during the tire mixing process on soft friction and metal wear. Compared with industrial carbon black (I-CB), the friction coefficient of CBp was smaller at different mixing stages, and the ripple caused by adhesion friction was not evident. After the modified CBp (M-CBp) was obtained by implementing the surface activation of common CBp (C-CBp), the friction coefficient between M-CBp and metal increased by 10%, while the filler dispersion and comprehensive mechanical properties showed an upward trend. The wear rate of metal was higher than that observed after adding I-CB during the same mixing mode; thus, it was necessary to strengthen the wear resistance of the inner-wall surface of the mixing chamber. The -OH group on the M-CBp surface can also participate in the silane coupling reaction and aggravate the metal wear of the mixer chamber wall. Through a comparison of results, the mixing friction coefficient can reflect the strength of filler-rubber interaction, which in turn can preliminarily represent the dispersion effect and comprehensive properties, reveal the reason behind the poor performance of CBp, and highlight the need for modification from the perspective of tribology.

The abuse and improper disposal of antibiotics including metronidazole (MNZ) result in serious contamination in aquatic environments. In this study, pyrite, which was not reactive for MNZ removal, was simply mixed with zero valent iron (ZVI) to efficiently remove MNZ in anaerobic aqueous solutions. A dual ZVI/pyrite system consisting of ZVI (1.0 g/L) and pyrite (4.0 g/L) removed MNZ completely in 360 min within a broad pH 0 range (5.0-9.0), and it still maintained a high removal efficiency (~80%) even at a high pH 0 of 10.0. By contrast, single ZVI (1.0 g/L) showed much lower efficiency (4.8%-22.0%) within the same pH 0 range (5.0-10.0). On investigating the mechanism of MNZ removal, the cooperation between ZVI and pyrite enhanced the surface corrosion of ZVI and facilitated the redox cycle of Fe(III)/Fe(II) to generate more sorbed Fe(II), which was a dominant reactive species for MNZ removal. Pyrite also activated the ZVI surface to form FeS@Fe in situ, accelerating the electron transfer from Fe 0 core to the surface-enriched MNZ, and stimulated the formation of green rust sulfate on the ZVI surface to further promote MNZ removal. Polyurethane coatings containing copper(II) L-tyrosine and glass microspheres were laser irradiated and underwent electroless metallization. Various sizes of glass microspheres were incorporated into the polyurethane coating matrix in order to examine their effects on surface activation and electroless metallization. The surface of the coatings was activated by using ArF excimer laser emitting ultraviolet radiation (λ = 193 nm) using different number of laser pulses and their fluence. The effects of surface activation and metallization were evaluated mainly based on optical and scanning electron microcopies (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). It was found that the presence of glass microspheres enabled the reduction in copper complex content, intensified the ablation process (higher cone-like structures created) and resulted in higher content of copper metallic seeds. On the other hand, the glass microspheres concentration, which was higher for lower size microspheres, was advantageous for obtaining a fully metallized layer.

The treatment of a polymer surface using an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) causes a local increase of the surface free energy (SFE). The plasma-treated zone can be visualized with the use of a test ink and quantitatively evaluated. However, the inked area is shrinking with time. The shrinkage characteristics are collected using activation image recording (AIR). The recording is conducted by a digital camera. The physical mechanisms of activation area shrinkage are discussed. The error sources are analyzed and methods of error reduction are proposed. The standard deviation of the activation area is less than 3%. Three polymers, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and polyoxymethylene (POM), are examined as a test substrate material. Due to a wide variation range of SFE and a small hydrophobic recovery, HDPE is chosen. Since the chemical mixtures tend to temporal changes of the stoichiometry, the pure formamide test ink with 58 mN/m is selected. The method is tested for the characterization of five different types of discharge: (i) pulsed arc APPJ with the power of about 700 W; (ii) piezoelectric direct discharge APPJ; (iii) piezoelectric driven needle corona in ambient air; (iv) piezoelectric driven plasma needle in argon; and (v) piezoelectric driven dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). For piezoelectrically driven discharges, the power was either 4.5 W or 8 W. It is shown how the AIR method can be used to solve different engineering problems.

Developing high-efficiency, low-cost electrocatalysts for water splitting is important but challenging. Two-dimensional nanosheet manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ) arrays are promising candidates for the design and development of advanced catalysts because of their large surface area. Here, a feasible solution to improve the catalytic activity of MnO 2 materials via decorating the active sites on the surface is proposed. With the help of plasma engineering, we successfully enabled surface activity of the MnO 2 nanosheets by decorating P or Fe species together with rich vacancies on the surface. The decorated P (P-MnO 2 ) or Fe (Fe-MnO 2 ) species were highly beneficial for the absorption of protons and OH - respectively, and rich oxygen vacancies induced the formation of stable Mn 3+ , which contributed to electron and charge transfer. Thus, increased electrochemically active specific areas, accelerated charge transfer, and a proper surface electronic structure could be achieved. On the basis of this activation strategy, the fabricated P-MnO 2 and Fe-MnO 2 showed excellent catalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions. To our knowledge, the performance of P-MnO 2 and Fe-MnO 2 outperformed most MnO 2 -based electrocatalysts in the field of electrocatalytic water splitting. This paper presents a comparative assessment of Cu(acac) 2 and {[Cu(μ- O,O '-NO 3 ) (L-arg)(2,2'-bpy)]·NO 3 } n as potential precursors for the electroless metallization of laser activated polymer materials. Coatings consisting of polyurethane resin, one of the two mentioned precursor compounds, and antimony oxide (Sb 2 O 3 ), as a compound strongly absorbing infrared radiation, were applied on the polycarbonate substrate. The coatings were activated with infrared Nd: YAG laser radiation (λ = 1064 nm) and electroless metallized. It was found that after laser irradiation, a micro-rough surface structure of the coatings was formed, on which copper was present in various oxidation states, as well as in its metallic form. For selected parameters of laser irradiation, it was possible to deposit a copper layer on the coating containing Cu(acac) 2 and Sb 2 O 3 , which is characterized by high adhesion strength. It was also found that the {[Cu(μ- O,O '-NO 3 ) (L-arg)(2,2'-bpy)]·NO 3 } n complex was not an effective precursor for the electroless metallization of Nd:YAG laser activated coatings. An attempt was made to determine the influence of the precursor chemical structure on the obtained metallization effects.

Polyethylene powder of average particle diameter of 160 µm was activated in a plasma reactor made from aluminum of volume 64 dm 3 at the pressure 100 Pa. Dense oxygen plasma was sustained with a microwave discharge powered by a pulsed magnetron source of power 1 kW mounted onto the top flange of the plasma reactor. Polymer powder was treated in a batch mode with 0.25 kg/batch. The powder was placed into a stainless-steel dish mounted in the center of the reactor where diffusing plasma of low ion density, and the O-atom density of 2 × 10 21 m -3 was sustained. The powder was stirred in the dish at the rate of 40 rpm. The evolution of powder wettability versus treatment time was measured using the Washburne method, and the surface composition was determined by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The wettability versus the oxygen concentration assumed a parabolic behavior. The maximal oxygen concentration, as revealed by XPS, was 17.5 at.%, and the maximal increase of wettability was 220%. The efficiency of O-atoms utilization in these experimental conditions was about 10% taking into account the spherical geometry of dust particles and perfectly smooth surface. The method is scalable to large industrial systems.

In industry, silica nanoparticles (NPs) are obtained by the fuming and the precipitation method. Fumed silica NPs are commonly used in the preparation of nanocomposites because they have an extremely low bulk density (160-190 kg/m 3 ), large surface area (50-600 m 2 /g), and nonporous surface, which promotes strong physical contact between the NPs and the organic phase. Fumed silica has fewer silanol groups (Si-OH) on its surface than the silica prepared by the Stöber method. However, the number of -OH groups on the fumed silica surface can be increased by pretreating them with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) before further surface modification. In this study, the effectiveness of the NaOH pretreatment was evaluated on commercial fumed silica NPs with a surface area of 200 m 2 /g. The number of surface -OH groups was estimated by potentiometric titration. The pretreated fumed NPs, and the precipitated NPs (prepared by the Stöber method) were modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) to obtain A200S and nSiO 2 -APTES, respectively. The NPs were characterized using electron dispersive scanning (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) analysis, and ζ-potential. XRD confirmed the presence of the organo-functional group on the surface of both NPs. After the amino-functionalization, the ζ-potential values of the nSiO 2 and A200 changed from -35.5 mV and -14.4 mV to +26.2 mV and +11.76 mV, respectively. Consequently, we have successfully synthesized functionalized NPs with interesting, specific surface area and porosity (pore volume and size), which can be attractive materials for chemical and energy industries.

It is difficult to stabilize gaseous elemental mercury (Hg°) on a sorbent from SO 2 -containing industrial flue gas. Enhancing Hg° oxidation and activating surface-active sulfur (S*) can benefit the chemical mercury adsorption process. A Mn-SnS 2 composite was prepared using the Mn modification of SnS 2 nanosheets to expose more Mn oxidation and sulfur adsorption sites. The results indicate that Mn-Sn 2 exhibits better Hg° removal performances at a wide temperature range of 100-250 °C. A sufficient amount of surface Mn with a valance state of Mn 4+ is favorable for Hg° oxidation, while the electron transfer properties of Sn can accelerate this oxidation process. Oxidized mercury primary exists as HgS with surface S*. A larger surface area, stable crystal structure, and active valance state of each element are favorable for Hg° oxidation and adsorption. The Mn-SnS 2 exhibits an excellent SO 2 resistance when the SO 2 concentration is lower than 1500 ppm. The effects of H 2 O and O 2 were also evaluated. The results show that O 2 has no influence, while H 2 O and SO 2 coexisting in the flue gas have a toxic effect on the Hg° removal performance. Selective metallization of polymeric materials using the technique known as laser direct structuring (LDS) is intensively developed. In this technique, metallized products can be manufactured by injection molding or by 3D printing process if rapid prototyping is need. Special additives present in the polymer matrix enable direct electroless metallization only on the surface which was laser activated. This paper presents the results of using copper microparticles introduced into the poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) matrix at various amounts (up to about 5 vol %). ABS was selected due to its good processing and mechanical properties and as one of the most common thermoplastics used in 3D printing. The influence of copper on structural, mechanical, and processing properties as well as on the effects of laser surface activation were determined. Two types of infrared lasers were tested for surface activation: Nd:YAG fiber laser (λ = 1064 nm) and CO 2 laser (λ = 10.6 µm). Various irradiation parameters (power, scanning speed, and frequency) were applied to find suitable conditions for laser surface activation and electroless metallization. It was found that the composites tested can be effectively metallized using the Nd:YAG laser, but only in a narrow range of radiation parameters. Activation with CO 2 laser failed, regardless of applied irradiation conditions. It resulted from the fact that ablation rate and thickness of modified surface layer for CO 2 were lower than for Nd:YAG laser using the same irradiation parameters (power, speed, and frequency of laser beams), thus the laser wavelength was crucial for successful surface activation.

Over the last years, polymers have gained great attention as substrate material, because of the possibility to produce low-cost sensors in a high-throughput manner or for rapid prototyping and the wide variety of polymeric materials available with different features (like transparency, flexibility, stretchability, etc.). For almost all biosensing applications, the interaction between biomolecules (for example, antibodies, proteins or enzymes) and the employed substrate surface is highly important. In order to realize an effective biomolecule immobilization on polymers, different surface activation techniques, including chemical and physical methods, exist. Among them, plasma treatment offers an easy, fast and effective activation of the surfaces by micro/nanotexturing and generating functional groups (including carboxylic acids, amines, esters, aldehydes or hydroxyl groups). Hence, here we present a systematic and comprehensive plasma activation study of various polymeric surfaces by optimizing different parameters, including power, time, substrate temperature and gas composition. Thereby, the highest immobilization efficiency along with a homogenous biomolecule distribution is achieved with a 5-min plasma treatment under a gas composition of 50% oxygen and nitrogen, at a power of 1000 W and a substrate temperature of 80 °C. These results are also confirmed by different surface characterization methods, including SEM, XPS and contact angle measurements.

Passive oxide layers on metal substrates impose remarkable interfacial resistance for electron and phonon transport. Here, a scalable surface activation process is presented for the breakdown of the passive oxide layer and the formation of nanowire/nanopyramid structured surfaces on metal substrates, which enables high-efficiency catalysis of high-crystallinity carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and the direct integration of the CNT-metal hierarchical architectures with flexible free-form configurations. The CNT-metal hierarchical architecture facilitates a dielectric free-energy-carrier transport pathway and blocks the reformation of passive oxide layer, and thus demonstrates a 5-fold decrease in interfacial electrical resistance with 66% increase in specific surface area compared with those without surface activation. Moreover, the CNT-metal hierarchical architectures demonstrate omnidirectional blackbody photoabsorption with the reflectance of 1 × 10 -5 over the range from ultraviolet to terahertz region, which is 1 order of magnitude lower than that of any previously reported broadband absorber material. The synergistically incorporated CNT-metal hierarchical architectures offer record-high broadband optical absorption with excellent electrical and structural properties as well as industrial-scale producibility.

A two-step synthesis is described for activating the surface of a fully hydrated hydrogel that is of interest as a possible scaffold for neural regeneration devices. The first step exploits the water content of the hydrogel and the hydrophobicity of the reaction solvent to create a thin oxide layer on the hydrogel surface using a common titanium or zirconium alkoxide. This layer serves as a reactive interface that enables rapid transformation of the hydrophilic, cell-nonadhesive hydrogel into either a highly hydrophobic surface by reaction with an alkylphosphonic acid, or into a cell-adhesive one using a (α,ω-diphosphono)alkane. Physically imprinting a mask ("debossing") into the hydrogel, followed by a two-step surface modification with a phosphonate, allows for patterning its surface to create spatially defined, cell-adhesive regions.

Fiber nanomaterials can become fundamental devices that can be woven into smart textiles, for example, miniaturized fiber-based supercapacitors (FSCs). They can be utilized for portable, wearable electronics and energy storage devices, which are highly prospective areas of research in the future. Herein, we developed porous carbon nanotube-graphene hybrid fibers (CNT-GFs) for all-solid-state symmetric FSCs, which were assembled through wet-spinning followed by a hydrothermal activation process using environmentally benign chemicals (i.e., H 2 O 2 and NH 4 OH in deionized water). The barriers that limited effective ion accessibility in GFs were overcome by the intercalation of CNTs in the GFs which enhanced their electrical conductivity and mechanical properties as well. The all-solid-state symmetric FSCs of a precisely controlled activated hybrid fiber (a-CNT-GF) electrode exhibited an enhanced volumetric capacitance of 60.75 F cm -3 compared with those of a pristine CNT-GF electrode (19.80 F cm -3 ). They also showed a volumetric energy density (4.83 mWh cm -3 ) roughly 3 times higher than that of untreated CNT-GFs (1.50 mWh cm -3 ). The excellent mechanical flexibility and structural stability of a miniaturized a-CNT-GF are highlighted by the demonstration of negligible differences in capacitance upon bending and twisting. The mechanism of developing porous, large-scale, low-cost electrodes using an environmentally benign activation method presented in this work provides a promising route for designing a new generation of wearable, portable miniaturized energy storage devices.

How a heavily charged metal nanocrystal, and further a dual-nanocrystals system behavior with continuous electron charging? This refers to the electric dynamics in charged particles as well as the crystal growth for real metal particles, but it is still opening in experimental observations and interpretations. To this end, we performed an in-situ electron-beam irradiation study using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on the Au nanocrystals that freely stand on the nitride boron nanotube (BNNT). Au nanocrystalline particles with sizes of 2⁻4 nm were prepared by a well-controlled sputtering method to stand on the BNNT surface without chemical bonding interactions. Au nanoparticles presented the surface atomic disorder, diffusion phenomena with continuous electron-beam irradiation, and further, the long-range motion that contains mainly the three stages: charging, activation, and adjacence, which are followed by final crystal growth. Firstly, the growth process undergoes the lattice diffusion and subsequently the surface-dominated diffusion mechanism. These abnormal phenomena and observations, which are fundamentally distinct from classic cases and previous reports, are mainly due to the overcharging of Au nanoparticle that produces a surface activation state in terms of high-energy plasma. This work therefore brings about new observations for both a single and dual-nanocrystals system, as well as new insights in understanding the resulting dynamics behaviors.

In this chapter methods and protocols for surfaces adapted to electrochemical impedance detection, antibody binding, electrolyte couples used, and instrumentation for EIS Biosensing are presented. Various technical bottlenecks have been overcome in recent years. Other limitations still present in this technique are discussed. We present the most recent applications in food pathogen detection based on EIS methods, as well as using other antibody-based platforms.

This paper describes surface functionalization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films by transamidation of the ester groups with primary amines. The use of water as a solvent improves tremendously the reaction rate and yield compared to conventionally used alcohols. In this study, PET films were exposed to an aqueous solution of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), which resulted in ester-to-amide reactions on the surface of the film. Hydrolysis of the resulting ethoxy moieties in APTES creates hydroxyl groups that can be used as anchoring points for further modification of PET films. This scheme offers an alternative approach to modify polyesters using water as the solvent.

Complex organics contained in dye wastewater are difficult to degrade and often require electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) to treat it. Surface activation of the electrode used in such treatment is an important factor determining the success of the process. The performance of boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond (BD-NCD) film electrode for decolorization of Acid Yellow (AY-36) azo dye with respect to the surface activation by electrochemical polarization was studied. Anodic polarization found to be more suitable as electrode pretreatment compared to cathodic one. After anodic polarization, the originally H-terminated surface of BD-NCD was changed into O-terminated, making it more hydrophilic. Due to the oxidation of surface functional groups and some portion of sp(2) carbon in the BD-NCD film during anodic polarization, the electrode was successfully being activated showing lower background current, wider potential window and considerably less surface activity compared to the non-polarized one. Consequently, electrooxidation (EO) capability of the anodically-polarized BD-NCD to degrade AY-36 dye was significantly enhanced, capable of nearly total decolorization and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal even after several times of re-using. The BD-NCD film electrode favored acidic condition for the dye degradation; and the presence of chloride ion in the solution was found to be more advantageous than sulfate active species., (Copyright © 2016. Protein biochips are the heart of many medical and bioanalytical applications. Increasing interest of protein biochip fabrication has been focused on surface activation and subsequent functionalization strategies for the immobilization of these molecules.

Oleylamine (OA) based "hot injection" colloidal synthesis offers a versatile approach to the synthesis of highly monodisperse metallic and multi-metallic alloyed nanostructures in the absence of potentially toxic and unstable phosphine compounds. For application in heterogeneous catalysis and electrocatalysis, the adsorbed OA species at the metal surfaces should be effectively removed without compromising the structure and composition of the nanostructures. Herein, we investigate the removal of OA from colloidal Pt nanoparticles through 1) "chemical methods" such as washing in acetic acid or ethanol, and ligand exchange with pyridine; and 2) thermal pre-treatment between 185 and 400 °C in air, H2 or Ar atmospheres. The electrochemical reactivity of Pt nanoparticles is acutely affected by the presence of surface organic impurities, making this material ideal for monitoring the effectiveness of OA removal. The results showed that thermal treatment in Ar at temperatures above 400 °C provides highly active particles, with reactivity comparable to the benchmark commercial catalyst, Pt/ETEK. The mechanism involved in thermal desorption of OA was also investigated by thermogravimetric analysis coupled to mass spectrometry (TGA-MS). Zero-valent magnesium (Mg(0)) was activated by ultrasound (US) in an aim to promote its potential use in water treatment without pH control. In this context, nitrate reduction was studied at batch conditions using various doses of magnesium powder and ultrasound power. While neither ultrasound nor zero-valent magnesium alone was effective for reducing nitrate in water, their combination removed up to 90% of 50 mg/L NO3-N within 60 min. The rate of nitrate reduction by US/Mg(0) enhanced with increasing ultrasonic power and magnesium dose. Nitrogen gas (N2) and nitrite (NO2(-)) were detected as the major reduction by-products, while magnesium hydroxide Mg(OH)2 and hydroxide ions (OH(-)) were identified as the main oxidation products. The results from SEM-EDS measurements revealed that the surface oxide level decreased significantly when the samples of Mg(0) particles were exposed to ultrasonic treatment. The surface passivation of magnesium particles was successfully minimized by mechanical forces of ultrasound, which in turn paved the way to sustain the catalyst activity toward nitrate reduction., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Pt nanoparticles with tunable size are prepared on the entire surface of facet-engineered Cu 2 WS 4 decahedral photocatalyst via a kinetic-controlled chemical reduction process. The {101} facets of the photocatalyst which featured photo-oxidation, are successfully activated for photoreduction by Pt. The resulting photocatalyst shows an activity nine times higher compared to that of the only {001}-facets activated catalyst obtained by a conventional in situ photodeposition route.

Tungsten trioxide (WO3) displays excellent performance in solar-related material applications. However, this material is rare and expensive. Therefore, developing efficient materials using smaller amounts of WO3 is inevitable. In this study, we investigated how to create high photocatalytic performance of WO3 particles containing platinum (Pt, as a co-catalyst) and homogeneously spherical macropores (as a medium to enable access of large molecules and light penetration into the remote internal regions of the catalyst). The present particles were prepared by spray drying of a precursor solution containing WO3 nanoparticles, Pt solution, and polystyrene (PS) spheres (as a colloidal template). Photocatalytic studies showed that changes in particle morphology (from dense with smooth surfaces, to dense with rough surfaces, to porous structures) and added Pt effectively improved the photocatalytic performance over WO3 nanoparticles. Our results showed that the best precursor (prepared using a PS/WO3 mass ratio of 0.32 and containing Pt co-catalyst) provided WO3 particles with a photocatalytic rate of more than 5 times that of pure 10 nm WO3 nanoparticles. Moreover, the catalyst can be effectively recycled without an apparent decrease in its photocatalytic activity. The experimental results were also supported by a proposal mechanism of the photocatalytic reaction phenomenon.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with a high theoretical energy density of ∼2500 Wh kg(-1) are considered as one promising rechargeable battery chemistry for next-generation energy storage. However, lithium-metal anode degradation remains a persistent problem causing safety concerns for Li-S batteries, hindering their practical utility. One possible strategy to circumvent the aforementioned problems is to use alternative, high-capacity, lithium-free anodes (e.g., Si, Sn, carbon) and a Li2S cathode. However, a large potential barrier was identified on the initial charge of insulating bulk Li2S particles, limiting the cell performance. In this work, the bulk Li2S particles were effectively activated with an electrolyte containing P2S5, resulting in a lowered initial charging voltage plateau. This permits the direct use of commercially available bulk Li2S particles as a high-capacity cathode for room-temperature, rechargeable Li-S batteries, significantly lowering the manufacturing cost of Li-S cells.
