The sluggish kinetics in Ni-rich cathodes at subzero temperatures causes decreased specific capacity and poor rate capability, resulting in slow and unstable charge storage. So far, the driving force of this phenomenon remains a mystery. Herein, with the help of in-situ X-ray diffraction and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry techniques, the continuous accumulation of both the cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) film formation and the incomplete structure evolution during cycling under subzero temperature are proposed. It is presented that excessively uniform and thick CEI film generated at subzero temperatures would block the diffusion of Li + -ions, resulting in incomplete phase evolution and clear charge potential delay. The incomplete phase evolution throughout the Li + -ion intercalation/de-intercalation processes would further cause low depth of discharge and poor electrochemical reversibility with low initial Coulombic efficiency, as well. In addition, the formation of the thick and uniform CEI film would also consume Li + -ions during the charging process. This discovery highlights the effects of the CEI film formation behavior and incomplete phase evolution in restricting electrochemical kinetics under subzero temperatures, which the authors believe would promote the further application of the Ni-rich cathodes., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Sodium-ion batteries, featuring resource abundance and similar working mechanisms to lithium-ion batteries, have gained extensive interest in both scientific exploration and industrial applications. However, the extremely sluggish reaction kinetics of charge carrier (Na + ) at subzero temperatures significantly reduces their specific capacities and cycling life. Herein, this study presents a novel hybrid structure with sodium titanium phosphate (NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , NTP) nanocube in-situ decorated on tablet-like carbon (NTP/C), which manifests superior sodium storage performances at low temperatures. At even -25 °C, a stable cycling with a specific capacity of 94.3 mAh/g can still be maintained after 200 cycles at 0.5 A/g, delivering a high capacity retention of 91.5 % compared with that at room temperature, along with an excellent rate capability. Generally, the superionic conductor structure, flat voltage plateaus, as well as the conductive carbonaceous framework can efficiently facilitate the charge transfer, accelerate the diffusion of Na + , and decrease the electrochemical polarization. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cold (4 °C) and subzero (-18 °C, -45 °C) temperatures on the occurrence time of membrane damage to provide Propidium Monoazide (PMA) penetration of Vibrio parahaemolyticus inoculated to the sea bass. Direct plate counting (DPC) and PMA-based quantitative loop-mediated isothermal amplification (qLAMP) and qPCR was utilized for discrimination of dead and live bacteria on the designated storage days (1, 3, 7, and 14). The optimum amount of PMA was 50 μM for inhibition of amplification derived from dead cells in spiked samples. The number of live V. parahaemolyticus was detectable at the end of the 14. day using PMA-qLAMP and PMA-qPCR at all the temperatures. On the 7th day, culturability has lost at any of the storage temperatures and DPCs at -18 °C and -45 °C revealed a difference of about 1 log 10  CFU/ml between 1st and 3rd days. The same difference was also observed in PMA-qLAMP and PMA-qPCR on the same days (0.59-0.95 log 10  CFU/ml). Subzero temperatures have the highest rate of viability while causing the fastest decrease in culturability in sample groups as a result of the higher level of transition to VBNC state. qLAMP and qPCR methods in the PMA-treated and nontreated groups on the storage days at all temperatures gave similar results (p > 0.05)., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Hydrogels consist of hydrophilic polymer networks dispersed in water. Many applications of hydrogels rely on their unique combination of solid-like mechanical behavior and water-like transport properties. If the temperature is lowered below 0 °C, however, hydrogels freeze and become rigid, brittle, and non-conductive. Here, a general class of hydrogels that do not freeze at temperatures far below 0 °C, while retaining high stretchability and fracture toughness, is demonstrated. These hydrogels are synthesized by adding a suitable amount of an ionic compound to the hydrogel. The present study focuses on tough polyacrylamide-alginate double network hydrogels equilibrated with aqueous solutions of calcium chloride. The resulting hydrogels can be cooled to temperatures as low as -57 °C without freezing. In this temperature range, the hydrogels can still be stretched more than four times their initial length and have a fracture toughness of 5000 J m -2 . A subzero-temperature cathode material is obtained by nucleating cubic prussian blue crystals at inhomogeneities in carbon nanotubes. Conducting enzymatic stopped-flow experiments at temperatures far removed from ambient can be very problematic because extremes in temperature (<10°C or >30°C) can damage the machine or the enzyme. We have devised a simple manifold that can be attached to most commercial stopped-flow systems that is independently heated or cooled separate from the main stopped-flow system. Careful calibration of the flow circuit allows the sample to be heated or cooled to the measurement temperature (-8 to +40°C) 1 to 2s before mixing in the reaction chamber. This approach allows measurements at temperatures where the stopped flow or the protein is normally unstable. To validate the manifold, we investigated the well-defined ATP-induced dissociation of rabbit muscle myosin subfragment 1 (S1) from its complex with pyrene-labeled actin. This process has both temperature-dependent and -independent components. Use of ethylene glycol allowed us to measure the reaction below 0°C and up to 42°C, and as expected the second-order rate constant (K1k+2) and the maximum rate of dissociation (k+2) both increased with temperature, whereas 1/K1 is unaffected by the change in temperature., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc.
