Background: This study aimed to examine the correlation between subcutaneous fat thickness and chemoport-related infection and to determine the risk factors that lead to complications associated with chemoport., Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed 363 patients with chemoport insertion between May 2018 and May 2022. The patients were classified into three groups, with 121 patients in each group, based on the tertiles of subcutaneous fat thickness measured in the computed tomography (CT) scan. The incidence of short-term and long-term complications, including dislocation, infection, and malfunction, were obtained and compared between the three groups. The risk factors of chemoport-related complications were analysed in multivariate analysis., Results: The incidence of infection in the low, middle, and high subcutaneous fat thickness groups were 1.7%, 3.3%, and 0%, respectively ( P  = 0.131). No short-term complications occurred in this study group. After one year of follow-up, 11 patients (3.0%) had long-term complications; 6 patients (1.7%) developed chemoport infection, while five patients (1.4%) had chemoport dislocation. In multivariate analysis, the risk of dislocation was significantly higher when insertion was performed via the left internal jugular vein (OR = 9.87, P =0.033)., Conclusions: The thickness of subcutaneous fat does not significantly correlate with the incidence of chemoport infection, and placement of the port on the left side of the chest wall via the left internal jugular vein is the risk factor for chemoport dislocation., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest., (© 2024 The Authors.)

Objective: To investigate potential risk factors for osteoporotic vertebral compression re-fractures (OVCRFs) following percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP)., Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent PKP from January 2012 to January 2020 were included in this study within the same institution. Cases were defined as patients who experienced OVCRFs, while controls were matched based on corresponding clinical characteristics from those patients without OVCRFs. The lumbar localized fat distribution parameters, including the fat infiltration ratio (FIR) in muscles [multifidus (MF), erector spinae (ES), paravertebral muscles (PVM), and psoas major (PS)] and subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), were compared between the two groups through radiological data. And other clinical data that may be relevant were also compared. Independent risk factors for OVCRFs after PKP were identified through a binary logistic regression analysis., Result: A total of 1391 patients who underwent PKP were included in this study. 51 patients were categorized into the re-fracture group, and 102 patients were selected as matched controls from the remaining cohort. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups in metrics including MF-FIR, ES-FIR, PVM-FIR, PS-FIR, bone mineral density (BMD), body-mass index (BMI), SFT, hemoglobin (Hb), albumin (ALB), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and triglycerides (TG) (P < 0.05). Binary logistic regression analysis demonstrated that PVM-FIR (P = 0.003), SFT (P < 0.001), BMD (P = 0.011), and ALP (P = 0.005) were independent predictors for the occurrence of OVCRFs., Conclusion: This study discovered that lumbar localized fat distribution parameters including PVM-FIR and SFT are independent predictors of OVCRFs. The residual intake and gain (RIG) aims to select animals that present low feed intake in relation to the expected. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of selection for RIG with performance and carcass traits in Nellore cattle. Initially, residual feed intake (RFI) and residual gain (RG) were determined. From this, the RIG was calculated, and the animals were classified as efficient and inefficient for RIG. The efficient animals for RIG showed higher daily weight gain (DWG), Longissimus muscle area (LMA), and mid-test metabolic body weight (MMBW) than the inefficient ones. No significant correlations were found between subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), marbling (MAR), LMA, MMBW, and the RIG. Thus, it's concluded that the RIG is a measure that can be used to identify and select animals with higher rates of DWG and LMA without changes in the dry matter intake (DMI), SFT, and MAR. However, this index should still be observed with caution, as it may be dependent on body size. Based on the findings, the selection of animals according to the RIG can be an important factor to generate phenotypic evolution in characteristics such as weight gain and rib eye area without adverse effects on the carcass fat deposition., (© 2024. The present study aimed to (a) assess normal-weight obesity (NWO) and general obesity prevalence among women of different ages residing in urban areas, (b) evaluate subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) in women with NWO, (c) establish SFT cutoff points for distinguishing NWO, and (d) explore eating habits linked to NWO. This cross-sectional study with 184 women aged 18-65 with NWO, normal weight without obesity (NWNO), overweight and general obesity included evaluation of body composition, SFT assessment using 2.5 MHz A-mode ultrasound (ISAK protocol, 7 sites) and lifestyle inquiries. The curvilinear relationship between body fat and BMI rendered BMI an unreliable indicator of adiposity in women with normal weight (BMI < 25 kg/m 2 ). Almost 30% of women with a high body fat percentage (BFP ≥ 30%) were misclassified when BMI was used to measure adiposity. The overall obesity prevalence defined by BFP was almost four times higher than that defined by BMI (56.0 vs. 18.0%, p = 1 × 10 -4 ). Women with NWO, overweight and general obesity shared a similar SFT profile and eating habits, setting them apart from those with NWNO. The mean SFT was the most reliable NWO predictor, with a threshold set at 12 mm equal to the 66th percentile. Mean SFT accurately classified 85% of women with NWO. While age did not significantly affect subcutaneous fat accumulation, total fat levels increased with age (R 2 = 0.07 and R 2 = 0.19, p adj = 0.1 and p adj = 9 × 10 -4 ). Higher NWO prevalence in middle-aged women was linked to age-related increase in fat mass and decrease in fat-free mass. Engaging in regular physical activity and reducing snack consumption effectively countered age-related changes in body composition ( p adj < 0.05). Women under 45 years who consumed sweet bakery items, fast food, and snacks more frequently showed higher BFP and NWO status ( p adj < 0.05). Prevention strategies should focus on monitoring body composition and promoting healthy behaviors, particularly among young women transitioning into adulthood and women over 45 years.

Study Design: A retrospective matched case-control study., Objective: This study aims to investigate the value of Subcutaneous Lumbar Spine Index (SLSI) as a predictor of early surgical site infection (SSI) after lumbar intervertebral fusion surgery., Methods: A retrospective case-control study was performed on patients who underwent transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2019 in a single institution. Cases were defined as those who developed early SSI according to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention criteria, and controls were matched from those patients without early SSI using the following matched criteria: gender, age, time of surgery and diabetes. Subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) and SLSI were measured on preoperative MRI mid-sagittal T2 weighted images., Results: A total of 3615 patients who underwent TLIF were enrolled in this study. Thirty-three patients were included in early SSI, and sixty-six patients were selected as matched controls. Univariate analysis indicated that fusion levels ( P = .007), operation time ( P = .022), obesity ( P = .013), SFT ( P = .002) and SLSI ( P = .001) were significantly associated with early SSI. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that multilevel fusion levels ( P = .021), obesity ( P = .035), a large SFT ( P = .026) and a high SLSI (P = .012) were independent risk factors. Body mass index (BMI) and SLSI were moderately correlated ( r 2 = .55). This study aimed to determine whether amplitude modulation (A-mode) ultrasound (US) provides accurate and reliable measurements comparable to those obtained using brightness modulation (B-mode) US under diverse conditions. Thirty healthy participants (15 women and 15 men) underwent measurements of subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), muscle thickness (MT), and muscle quality (MQ) in the trapezius and biceps brachii muscles using both US modes before and after exercises designed to stimulate the respective muscles. Among the three key indices, the results demonstrated the high validity of the A-mode, with minimal mean differences (MDs) between the two devices less than 0.91 mm and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) exceeding 0.95 for all measures. In addition, the correlation coefficients between the error scores and average scores for the trapezius and biceps brachii suggested no evidence of systematic error. The trapezius MT and MQ significantly increased, and the biceps brachii MT significantly increased after the exercises ( p < 0.05). Notably, both the A- and B-modes exhibited the same trend in these post-exercise changes in the muscle. This study suggests that low-cost and low-resolution A-mode US provides measurements of SFT, MT, and MQ similar to the more expensive, high-resolution B-mode imaging. A-mode US is an affordable and portable alternative for muscle assessment.

The objective of this study was to assess the capability of predicting carcass traits and meat cuts weights, in fattening lambs of indigenous Greek dairy sheep breeds, using ultrasound measurements and live body weight measurements pre-slaughter. A total of 187 lambs of Chios and Serres breeds were involved in the study. Body condition score, live body weight (LBW), and ultrasound measurements of Longissimus lumborum muscle depth (LMD) and subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) at the lumbar region were recorded pre-slaughter. After slaughter, the carcasses were classified using five-degree grading systems for muscle development and fat deposition, while hot (HCW) and cold carcass (CCW) and meat cuts weights were measured. The statistical analyses included descriptive statistics and linear regression models to estimate the fixed effects of sex and the covariances of LBW, BCS, and ultrasound measurements on the studied traits. High R 2 values (0.60 ≤ R 2  ≤ 0.92) were observed in the models predicting HCW, CCW, forequarter, leg chump on shank off, the short loin, the eye of the short loin, and foreshank weights. Among the models estimated LMD, SFT, and LBW as significant predictors, the ones predicting hot and cold carcass weights, the short loin, the eye of the short loin, and the eye of the rack weights were successfully validated. Our objective was to use measures of intake and productive performance to adjust prediction models for the carcass traits of non-castrated Nellore cattle finished in a feedlot. Individual data from 168 non-castrated male Nellore steers finished in feedlot between the years 2016-2021 were used. Descriptive statistical analyzes and Pearson correlation coefficients were performed. The outliers were tested by evaluating the studentized residuals in relation to the values predicted by the equations. Residues that were outside the range of -2.5 to 2.5 were removed. The goodness of fit of the developed equations was evaluated by the coefficients of determination (R 2 ) and root mean square error (RMSE). Models for carcass yield, subcutaneous fat thickness, ribeye area, and shear force were adjusted. Means of 53.5% carcass yield, 4.8 mm subcutaneous fat thickness, 73 cm 2 loin eye area, and 8.1 kg shear force were observed. The observed average intakes were 9.9 kg/day of dry matter, 3.3 kg/day of neutral detergent fiber content, 1.5 kg/day of crude protein, and 7.1 kg/day of total digestible nutrients. The average confinement time was 113 days, the average total weight gain was 152.2 kg and the average daily gain was 1.35 kg/day. Intake measures significantly correlated with shear force and subcutaneous fat thickness and ribeye area. Carcass yield was significantly correlated with total weight gain, feedlot time, and hot carcass weight. Measures of nutrient intake, performance, and confinement time can be used as predictors of carcass yield, ribeye area, fat thickness, and shear force of non-castrated Nellore cattle finished in a feedlot. The prediction equations for ribeye area, carcass yield, subcutaneous fat thickness, and shear force showed sufficient precision and accuracy for non-castrated Nellore cattle finished in confinement systems under tropical conditions. Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common complications after gastric cancer (GC) surgery. The occurrence of SSI can lead to a prolonged postoperative hospital stay and increased medical expenses, and it can also affect postoperative rehabilitation and the quality of life of patients. Subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) and abdominal depth (AD) can be used as predictors of SSI in patients undergoing radical resection of GC., Aim: To explore the potential relationship between SFT or AD and SSI in patients undergoing elective radical resection of GC., Methods: Demographic, clinical, and pre- and intraoperative information of 355 patients who had undergone elective radical resection of GC were retrospectively collected from hospital electronic medical records. Univariate analysis was performed to screen out the significant parameters, which were subsequently analyzed using binary logistic regression and receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis., Results: The prevalence of SSI was 11.27% (40/355). Multivariate analyses revealed that SFT [odds ratio (OR) = 1.150; 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 1.090-1.214; P < 0.001], AD (OR = 1.024; 95%CI: 1.009-1.040; P = 0.002), laparoscopic-assisted surgery (OR = 0.286; 95%CI: 0.030-0.797; P = 0.017), and operation time (OR = 1.008; 95%CI: 1.001-1.015; P = 0.030) were independently associated with the incidence of SSI after elective radical resection of GC. The effect of different percentages of Duroc genes in crossbreeding (5, 50 and 100%), the gender (immunocastrated males - ICM and females) and their interaction was evaluated on growth, carcass and meat quality traits for pigs. Crossbreds (50% Duroc) had greater average daily feed intake, hot carcass weight and backfat thickness but lower meat yield when compared to 5% Duroc crossbreds and purebred (100% Duroc) animals (P < 0.05). Purebred (100% Duroc) animals had the lowest backfat thickness and subcutaneous fat thickness, and the greatest muscle depth and meat yield (P < 0.05). ICM animals had better feed conversion, greater average daily gain, hot carcass weight and amount of meat, and lower hot carcass yield, cold carcass weight, Longissimus thoracis depth, rib with belly and ham weights compared to females (P < 0.05). Marbling scores were greater in purebred (100%) animals (P < 0.05). The meat from 50% Duroc crossbreds and 100% Duroc purebred pigs was more reddish pink in color than 5% Duroc crossbreds (P < 0.05). Also, marbling scores were greater for females compared to ICM (P < 0.05). Objective: Current evidence regarding the safety of abdominal subcutaneous injections in pregnant women is limited. In this study, we developed a predictive model for abdominal skin-subcutaneous fat thickness (S-ScFT) by gestational periods (GP) in pregnant women. Methods: A total of 354 cases were measured for S-ScFT. Three machine learning algorithms, namely deep learning, random forest, and support vector machine, were used for S-ScFT predictive modeling and factor analysis for each abdominal site. Data analysis was performed using SPSS and RapidMiner softwares. Results: The deep learning algorithm best predicted the abdominal S-ScFT. The common important variables in all three algorithms for the prediction of abdominal S-ScFT were menarcheal age, prepregnancy weight, prepregnancy body mass index (categorized), large fetus for gestational age, and alcohol consumption. Conclusion: Predicting the safety of subcutaneous injections during pregnancy could be beneficial for managing gestational diabetes mellitus in pregnant women.

Introduction Lateral pain around the greater trochanter (LTP) is a common complication after total hip arthroplasty (THA) that can significantly reduce quality of life. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between lateral trochanteric bursa repair, subcutaneous fat thickness, and trochanteric pain during the THA procedure. Materials and methods A total of 98 patients who underwent THA for hip arthrosis between 2021 and 2022 were evaluated retrospectively. For all evaluated patients, subcutaneous thickness was measured between the fascia and the skin at the incision site. Bursa repair was performed in 47 patients, while bursa excision was done in 51 patients. The data obtained included demographic information, functional scores, comorbidities, bursa repair and skin thickness values, radiographic evaluations, and other specific markers. These were compared between patients diagnosed with LTP following THA and the controls. Results No difference was observed between the study groups in terms of subcutaneous fat thickness, bursa repair, and other demographic or radiographic evaluations. As expected, there were statistically significant differences between the groups in terms of the visual analog scale (VAS) score (p=0.030) and the Harris hip score (HHS) (p=0.045). When comparing the groups with and without LTP, the VAS score was higher in the group with LTP, while the HHS was found to be lower. Conclusion Trochanteric pain is not associated with bursa repair or subcutaneous thickness. Introduction: Surgical site infection (SSI) is a significant cause of postoperative morbidity resulting in an increased hospital stay and cost. Various measures have been used to predict SSI such as subcutaneous fat thickness (SCFT) and abdominal depth (AD) in case of abdominal surgeries. The objective of the study was to compare SCFT with AD to predict SSI in HPB surgeries., Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted from February 2020 to February 2021, which included 76 patients who underwent elective open hepatopancreatobiliary surgeries. SCFT and AD at the level of the umbilicus were measured preoperatively using the computed tomography abdomen. The occurrence of SSI was evaluated in correlation with SCFT and AD. SCFT and AD were compared using the receiver operating characteristic curve for prediction of SSI., Results: Twenty-five (32.3%) patients who underwent elective HPB surgeries developed SSI. 72% of the SSI were superficial. In multivariate analysis, only SCFT was associated with SSI, which was statistically significant. It was compared with AD using the receiver operating characteristic curve where SCFT proved to be better at predicting SSI (AUC=0.884) with cut-off =2.13 cm, sensitivity 84%, and specificity 86%), compared to AD with an AUC of 0.449., Conclusion: SSI is the common cause of increased morbidity following hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeries with risk factors including SCFT and AD. Approximately one-third of patient developed SSI, with most the common being superficial SSI. Purpose: Minimally invasive lumbar decompression (MIS) in obese pzatients is technically challenging due to the use of longer tube retractors. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the thickness of the soft tissue and subcutaneous fat on complications, revisions, and patient-reported functional outcomes after MIS., Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of 148 consecutive patients who underwent minimally invasive lumbar decompression at our institute between 2013 and 2017 and had at least one year of follow-up. Analysis was performed five times, each time the study group was defined by another measure of adiposity: BMI > 30, skin to lamina distance at the site of surgery and at L4 > 6 cm, and subcutaneous fat thickness at the site of surgery and at L4 > 3 cm. Outcomes included intraoperative complications (durotomy or neurological deficit), possibly inadequate decompression (residual disc, reoperation), length of stay, return to the emergency room or readmission, postoperative medical complications, and functional outcomes: visual analog scores for back and leg pain, and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI)., Results: Patients with a thicker layer soft tissue had a significantly higher burden of comorbidities than controls, including higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease (p = 0.002), diabetes (p < 0.001), hypertension (p < 0.001) and higher ASA scores (p = 0.002). Nevertheless, there was no significant difference between the patient groups in surgical and medical complications, functional outcomes, and other assessed outcomes., Conclusion: Our results indicate that minimally invasive lumbar decompression is safe and effective for patients with a thick layer of soft tissue and subcutaneous fat., (© 2023. Overweight affects nearly 40% of dogs. The objective of this study was to explore the hypothesis of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease through the association between birth weight and adiposity in adult dogs. The association between body condition score (BCS) and subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), measured in the flanks, abdomen and lumbar regions, was assessed in a population 88 adult Labradors (>1 year). Significant positive moderate correlations between BCS and SFT were described. A linear mixed-effects model was used to investigate the association between birth weight and SFT by adjusting for sex, age, neuter status and the anatomical site of the measurement. The results showed that SFT values increased with age and were higher in sterilized than in entire dogs. In addition, SFT values were higher in the lumbar region compared to the other anatomical sites. Finally, the model revealed a significant association between SFT and birth weight, suggesting that, as in other species, dogs with the lowest birth weights have thicker subcutaneous fat at adulthood than the others. The assessment of visceral adipose tissue and the relative importance of birth weight among the numerous risk factors of overweight remains to be explored in dogs.

Introduction: Although BMI is often used as a surrogate for posterior cervical subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), the association of BMI with cervical SFT is unknown. We performed a retrospective radiographic study to analyze the relationship between BMI and cervical SFT., Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with cervical CT scans. SFT was assessed by measuring the distance (mm) from the spinous processes of C2-C7 to the skin edge. Pearson correlations and linear regression were used to analyze the relationship between BMI and SFT. One-way ANOVA was used to analyze differences in C2-C7 distances while stratifying by BMI., Results: A total of 96 patients were included. BMI had a moderate correlation with average C2-C7 ( r =0.546, p < 0.05) SFT , and a weak to moderate correlation with each individual C2-C7 distance. The strongest correlation was at the C7 level ( r = 0.583, p < 0.05). These analyses remained significant controlling for potential confounders of patient age, sex, and diabetes. No difference was found in the average C2-C7 distance in patients with BMIs of 25-30 compared to those with BMIs of 30-40 (p=0.996), whereas in patients with BMI <25 and BMI >40, differences were significant (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: BMI is not strongly correlated with SFT in the cervical spine. Although BMI less than 25 or greater than 40 is correlated with respectively decreased or increased cervical SFT, BMI of 25-40 is not correlated with cervical SFT. This is clinically important information for surgeons counseling patients on perioperative risk before undergoing cervical spine procedures, namely infection. Background: Carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) is used as a marker of subclinical and asymptomatic atherosclerotic vascular disease. Increased CIMT is associated with future cerebrovascular and cardiovascular events. There is limited data on the profile and correlates of CIMT in Africa. The aim of this study was to describe the profile and correlates of CIMT in apparently normal younger-age adults in an urban setting in Kenya., Methods: This study used population-based data collected from 2003 adults between the ages of 40 and 60 years in two slums of Nairobi as part of a genetic study. CIMT was measured using LOGIQ e (GE Healthcare, CT, USA) ultrasound on both left and right carotid arteries, whereby maximum, mean, and minimum values were recorded. Age- and sex-specific CIMT measurements were calculated and their association with basic sociodemographic, behavioral and body composition indicators were investigated., Results: The median (IQR) CIMT were 0.58 (0.51, 0.66) and 0.59 (0.53, 0.66) in men and women, respectively. About 16% of the study population had CIMT greater than 0.7mm, the cut off for higher CIMT. Nearly 60% had CIMT values ≥75th percentile. Age, current use of alcohol, systolic blood pressure, subcutaneous fat thickness, pulse rate and pulse pressure were found to be the main predictors of CIMT in our study population., Conclusion: This study provided population-based reference values and predictors for CIMT for an adult population living in urban poor settings in Kenya. Background: Laparoscopic colorectal surgery (LCRS) requires a small laparotomy at the umbilicus. The wound is small and inconspicuous, but if the patient develops an umbilical incisional hernia (UIH), the wound is visible and the patient suffers from symptoms of discomfort. However, the incidence of UIH after LCRS and its risk factors are not well understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk factors for UIH after LCRS for colorectal cancer., Methods: This was a single-centre retrospective study of 135 patients with colorectal cancer, conducted at our hospital from April 2013 to March 2019. The diagnosis of UIH was based on computed tomography and physical examination findings. Preoperative patient data such as enlargement of the umbilical orifice (EUO), subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) and intraperitoneal thickness (IPT) were collected and analysed using univariate and multivariate analyses for the presence of risk factors for UIH., Results: A total of 135 patients who underwent LCRS were analysed. The incidence of UIH was 20.7%. Univariate analysis revealed significantly high body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 (P = 0.032), EUO (P < 0.001), SFT ≥18 mm (P = 0.011), and IPT ≥61 mm (P < 0.01) in the UIH group. Multivariate analysis revealed significant differences in EUO (P < 0.001), SFT ≥18 mm (P = 0.046) and IPT ≥61 mm (P = 0.022)., Conclusion: EUO was the most important risk factor for UIH, followed by IPT and SFT. The slaughter and carcass features of four breeds named Limousin (LI), Charolais (CH), Angus (AN), and Hereford (HE) were examined. Nine calves from each breed were slaughtered at an average age of 18.5 months. The animals were weighed before slaughter, and the slaughter weights as well as some body measurements of the animals were recorded. The dismemberment of the carcasses was performed after a resting period of 24 h at + 4 °C. The slaughter weights were 581.89, 590.72, 577.67, and 610.89 kg, respectively. Chilled carcass weights were 348.26, 346.91, 327.60, and 338.10 kg, respectively, with no significant differences among breeds. Dressing percentages were 59.89, 58.75, 56.71, and 55.33%, and the valuable meat ratios were 27.89, 27.66, 24.45, and 24.32%, respectively. Carcass bone ratios were 13.89, 14.17, 14.64, and 14.61%, respectively. The longissimus muscle areas (LMA) were 97.46, 102.29, 81.05, and 83.93 cm 2 , and the subcutaneous fat thickness was 0.38, 0.43, 1.00, and 1.32 cm, respectively. Significant differences were observed among breeds in terms of these characteristics. Carcass weight was highest in LI, and LI and CH breeds had higher carcass yields than the other two breeds. Although HE had the highest slaughter weight, it showed the lowest carcass yield. Whilst more meat was obtained from LI and CH, the highest fat and bone ratios were determined in HE and AN., (© 2022. Background Context: Surgical site infections (SSIs) after spinal fusion surgery increase healthcare costs, morbidity and mortality. Routine measures of obesity fail to consider site specific fat distribution., Purpose: To assess the association between the spine adipose index and deep surgical site infection and determine a threshold value for spine adipose index that can assist in preoperative risk stratification in patients undergoing posterior instrumented lumbar fusion (PILF)., Study Design/setting: Multicenter retrospective case-control study., Patient Sample: We reviewed patients who underwent PILF from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2018., Outcome Measures: All patients developing a deep primary incisional or organ-space SSI within 90 days of surgery as per US Center for Disease Control and Prevention criteria were identified. We gathered potential pre-operative and intra-operative deep infection risk factors for each patient. A 1:1 match was performed using the following criteria: gender, age (±3 y), ethnicity, date of surgery (± 1 y), and hospital location of surgery. Spine adipose index was measured on pre-operative mid-sagittal cuts of T2 weighted MRI scans. Each measurement was repeated twice by three authors in a blinded fashion, with each series of measurement separated by a period of at least six weeks., Methods: Stepwise binary logistic regression analysis was used to assess the association between SAI and the development of deep SSI. Separate logistic regression models were used for body mass index (BMI) and direct measures of subcutaneous fat thickness. Receiver Operating Characteristic analysis was used to determine the optimal value for SAI, and subsequent risk ratios were calculated using the identified threshold. Intra- and inter-observer reliabilities were assessed using intra-class coefficients., Results: Forty-two patients were included in final analysis, with twenty-one cases and twenty-one matched controls. The spine adipose index was significantly greater in patients developing deep SSI (p=.029), and this relationship was maintained after adjusting for confounders (p=.046). Risk of developing deep SSI following PILF surgery was increased 2.0-fold when the spine adipose index was ≥0.51. The spine adipose index had excellent (ICC >0.9; p<.001) inter- and intra-observer reliabilities., Conclusion: The spine adipose index is a novel radiographic measure and an independent risk factor for developing deep SSI, with 0.51 being the ideal threshold value for pre-operative risk stratification in patients undergoing PILF surgery., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. Background/aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a 6-month treatment regimen with exenatide on the lipid profile, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), carotid intima media thickness (CIMT), visceral adiposity, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), all of which are important cardiovascular risk factors., Materials and Methods: This study included 45 obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Baseline clinical findings, laboratory parameters, and ultrasonography findings were recorded. An exenatide recipe was given twice daily to the patients and, after 6 months of therapy, the same variables were compared. The compared parameters were lipid profiles, hsCRP, aspartat aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, liver craniocaudal diameter, visceral fat volume, subcutaneous fat thickness, and CIMT. Liver diameter, visceral fat volume, subcutaneous fat thickness, and CIMT were measured by ultrasonography., Results: After therapy, statistically significant improvements were achieved in lipid profile, hsCRP, liver enzymes, body mass index, and waist and hip circumferences. Also, statistically significant decreases were obtained in liver craniocaudal diameter, subcutaneous fat thickness, visceral fat volume, and CIMT. The reduction of CIMT and liver diameter were not correlated with BMI and HbA1c reduction., Conclusion: This study showed improvement in lipid profile and hsCRP levels with exenatide treatment. We also showed decrease in both visceral fat volume and subcutaneous fat thickness. We demonstrated significant decrease in liver enzymes with significant decrease in liver diameter. These findings support the use of exenatide in patients with NAFLD and T2DM. Background: Findings from studies on obesity and benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) have been inconsistent. With a previous study done in our facility showing no correlation between anthropometric indices of obesity and BPE, this study aimed at reevaluating the association between obesity and BPE using sonographic indices of abdominal/central obesity., Materials and Methods: Ninety consenting subjects with clinically confirmed BPE had their height and weight [(to calculate body mass index (BMI)] as well as waist and hip circumference [to calculate waist-hip ratio (WHR)] done. The subcutaneous, preperitoneal, and visceral fat thicknesses (SFT, PFT, and VFT, respectively) of these subjects and their prostate volumes were measured on transabdominal Ultrasonography (USS). Transrectal USS was also done to measure the total prostate and transitional zone volumes. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22., Results: WHR and waist circumference correlated positively with SFT (r = 0.325, P = 0.002 and r = 0.370, P = 0.000, respectively) and PFT (r = 0.209, P = 0.048 and r = 0.313, P = 0.003, respectively). While BMI correlated positively (r = 0.23, P = 0.029) with transrectal transitional zone volume, all three sonographic indices of adiposity correlated negatively (SFT: r = -0.223, P = 0.035; PFT: r = -0.321, P = 0.002; VFT: r = -0.242, P = 0.021) with transrectal total prostate volume. In addition, PFT correlated negatively with transabdominal prostate volume (r = -0.222, P = 0.037) and transrectal transitional zone volume (r = -0.211, P = 0.046)., Conclusion: The relationship of BMI with transrectal transitional zone volume was a direct one, while that of SFT, PFT, and VFT with transrectal total prostate volume as well as PFT with transabdominal prostate volume and transrectal transitional zone volume was an inverse one., Competing Interests: None

The thickness of the subcutaneous fat (SFT) is a very important parameter in the ham, since determines the process the ham will be submitted. This study compares two methods to predict the SFT in slaughter line: an automatic system using an SVM model (Support Vector Machine) and a manual measurement of the fat carried out by an experienced operator, in terms of accuracy and economic benefit. These two methods were compared to the golden standard obtained by measuring SFT with a ruler in a sample of 400 hams equally distributed within each SFT class. The results show that the SFT prediction made by the SVM model achieves an accuracy of 75.3%, which represents an improvement of 5.5% compared to the manual measurement. Regarding economic benefits, SVM model can increase them between 12 and 17%. It can be concluded that the classification using SVM is more accurate than the one performed manually with an increase of the economic benefit for sorting., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) hampers the advantages of surgical management, which requires early forecast particularly in patients receiving colorectal surgery. This study is to explore potential relationship between individual abdominal anatomic characteristics including subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), rectus abdominis thickness (RAT), and abdomen depth (AD), with the incidence of SSI in elective radical resection of colon malignancy. Materials and Methods: This retrospective case-control study has recruited 55 patients in each SSI and non-SSI group with propensity score match method. Demographics, clinical attributes, and pre- and intra-operative information were compared between groups with univariate analysis to elicit significant parameters, which were subsequently brought into logistic regression and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: Patients with SSI showed lower preoperative albumin ( p = 0.0022), higher RAT ( p = 0.014), AD ( p = 0.029), and the multiplied value (RAT × AD) ( p = 0.0026) contrasted with patients without SSI. Logistic regression demonstrated RAT × AD as an independent risk factor for SSI (OR = 1.007, p < 0.001) and a biomarker for SSI prediction (AUC = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.74 ~ 0.91). Conclusions: Preoperative RAT and abdomen depth are associated with the risk of postoperative SSI in patients receiving elective radical resection of colon cancer. Background: Body mass index does not indicate the distribution of adipose tissue. Central adiposity may be measured using ultrasound measurement of subcutaneous fat thickness. This study determined if the abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness measured correlated with skin-to-epidural space distance at delivery, and compared this with the booking body mass index., Methods: We analysed a sub-set of participants from a single-centre, prospective cohort study that assessed the relationship between subcutaneous fat thickness and maternity outcomes. Abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness measurements were obtained during the routine fetal anomaly scan. The skin-to-epidural space distance was obtained in those having epidural or combined spinal-epidural analgesia. Linear regression was used to test for strength of association and adjusted R 2 values calculated to determine if subcutaneous fat thickness or body mass index was more strongly associated with skin-to-epidural space distance., Results: The 463 women had a median (IQR) booking body mass index of 25.0 kg/m 2 (21.8-29.3) and subcutaneous fat thickness of 16.2 mm (13.0-21.0). The median (IQR) skin-to-epidural space distance was 5.0 cm (4.5-6.0). Both parameters significantly correlated with skin-to-epidural space distance (r=0.53 and 0.68 respectively, P <0.001). Adjusted linear regression coefficient (95% CI) for subcutaneous fat thickness was 0.09 (0.08 to 0.11), R 2 =0.30 and for body mass index 0.12 (0.11 to 0.13), R 2 =0.47., Conclusions: Booking body mass index had a stronger relationship with skin-to- epidural space distance at delivery than subcutaneous fat thickness, explaining 47% of the variation in the skin-to-epidural distance., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare cutaneous heat pain thresholds using the method of limit and level., Methods: Sixteen young males (23.2 ± 3.2 year, 174.9 ± 4.9 cm, and 70.1 ± 8.6 kg) participated in this study. The thermode temperature increased at a constant rate of 0.1 °C s -1 from 33 °C for the method of limit, whereas the method of level consisted of 3 s heat pulses increasing from 44 °C to 50 °C in 100 s separated by 5 s intervals. All measurements were conducted on 14 body regions (the forehead, neck, chest, abdomen, upper back, upper arm, forearm, waist, hand, palm, thigh, calf, foot, and sole) in 28 °C, 35% relative humidity., Results: The results are as follows. Heat pain thresholds were on average 3.2 ± 2.1 °C higher for the method of level than for the method of limit (P < 0.05). Second, the correlation coefficient between values by two methods was 0.819 (P < 0.01). Third, lower body regions (thigh, calf, and sole) had higher heat pain thresholds than upper body regions (chest) by the method of level only (P < 0.05). Fourth, body regional subcutaneous fat thickness showed no relationship with heat pain thresholds except the upper arm., Conclusion: These results indicated that cutaneous heat pain thresholds vary based on the type of heat stimuli and body regions. The method of limit could be applied for predicting accumulated thermal pain starting from moderate heat, whereas the method of level may be applicable for predicting acute heat pain to flames or high heat.

Background: Subcutaneous fat is a highly active metabolic tissue that exerts control on numerous biochemical and physiological processes in health and disease. Children are particularly susceptible to nutritional problems, hence the need to measure subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) which can be used to determine their body composition. Ultrasonography provides an affordable, noninvasive, available technique of achieving this., Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the normal values of SFT at the triceps, subscapular, and abdomen in children age 1-5 years using ultrasound in southern Nigeria., Materials and Methods: This was a prospective study of 1750 healthy children age 1-5 years in nursery and primary schools in Calabar, Nigeria. Their body mass indexes were calculated from their weights and heights, while their triceps fat thickness (TFT), subscapular fat thickness (SuFT), and abdominal fat thickness (AFT) were measured using a 7.5-MHz linear array transducer of a Hitachi portable ultrasound machine., Results: The mean TFT value for girls was 4.6 ± 2.0 mm and 3.99 ± 1.8 mm for boys. Girls had mean SuFT value of 2.37 ± 1.41 mm and boys 2.14 ± 1.02 mm. The mean AFT value for girls was 5.53 ± 2.94 mm and for boys 4.53 ± 2.37 mm. The values at all sites were generally higher in females than in males., Conclusion: This work has provided a sonographic normogram of SFT at various sites for preschool children in Nigeria., Competing Interests: None

Introduction: Early pregnancy body mass index (BMI) is known to predict adverse pregnancy outcomes but does not account for body fat distribution. This study aimed to determine prospectively whether maternal abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness (SCFT) measured by ultrasound at the fetal morphology scan is a better predictor than BMI of mode of delivery and other pregnancy outcomes., Material and Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of women delivering singleton neonates at a tertiary public hospital. Women were included if they had appropriate images at the routine fetal anomaly ultrasound scan and delivered in the facility. The primary outcome was mode of delivery categorized as cesarean section or vaginal delivery. The relation between maternal SCFT and BMI was described using the Pearson correlation coefficient. The association of maternal abdominal SCFT BMI at booking-in was compared with pregnancy outcomes using univariate linear and logistic regression., Results: SCFT and BMI were obtained for 997 women. The median (interquartile range) SCFT was 15.3 mm (12.8-19.6) and median (interquartile range) BMI 24.3 kg/m 2 (21.7-28.3). Maternal abdominal SCFT and BMI were highly correlated (R 2  = 0.55). Both were significantly associated with cesarean delivery: SCFT per 5 mm (odds ratio [OR] 1.32, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18-1.48; BMI per 5 kg/m 2 OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.15-1.44., Conclusions: Maternal abdominal SCFT and BMI were both significantly associated with cesarean delivery and other outcomes. Objectives: Insulin resistance (IR) is important in the pathogenesis of diabetes, the prevalence of which has become a major public health threat in Asia. The aim of this study was to use ultrasound measurements of abdominal fat thickness to predict IR and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels among Singaporean adults., Methods: A total of 399 healthy Singaporeans (mean age 36.7 ± 14.3 y; 43.4% men) took part in this study. Preperitoneal fat thickness (PFT) and subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) were determined by ultrasound., Result: We found that both PFT and SFT had significant positive correlations (P < 0.05) with fasting insulin concentration, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, triacylglycerol (TG), and blood pressure, and negatively correlated to serum HDL-C in all participants. Separating men and women, PFT was an independent determinant of IR and low HDL-C only in men. On receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis, PFT ≥1.2 cm was the optimal cutoff value to identify IR and low HDL-C in men. On the other hand, SFT was the determinant of IR, elevated TG, and low HDL-C only in women. An SFT of 1.1 cm was the optimal cutoff value to define IR, elevated TG, and low HDL-C in women., Conclusions: Results of this study suggested that ultrasound measurements of PFT and SFT could provide simple and useful indices of IR and lipid disorders for healthy Singaporean men and women. The thickness of the subcutaneous fat in hams is one of the most important factors for the dry-curing process and largely determines its final quality. This parameter is usually measured in slaughterhouses by a manual metrical measure to classify hams. The aim of the present study was to propose an automatic classification method based on data obtained from a carcass automatic classification equipment (AutoFom) and intrinsic data of the pigs (sex, breed, and weight) to simulate the manual classification system. The evaluated classification algorithms were decision tree, support vector machines (SVM), k-nearest neighbour and discriminant analysis. A total of 4000 hams selected by breed and sex were classified as thin (0-10 mm), standard (11-15 mm), semi-fat (16-20 mm) and fat (>20 mm). The most reliable model, with a percentage of success of 73%, was SVM with Gaussian kernel, including all data available. Background: Systems for estimating body condition score (BCS) are currently used in canine practice to monitor fatness levels. These tools are cheap and easy to use but lack the necessary precision to monitor small changes in body fat, particularly during weight control treatments or in research. The present work aims to study the application of real-time ultrasonography (RTU) together with image analysis in the assessment of subcutaneous fat depots in dogs. Ultrasound images were collected from five anatomical locations (chest, flank, abdomen, thigh and lumbar) from 28 healthy dogs of different breeds and with a body weight (BW) ranging from 5.2 to 33.0 kg. BCS was collected by visual appraisal using a 5-point scale. Subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) was estimated from RTU images, using the average of three measurements taken in fat deposits located above the muscles represented in each image. Correlations were established between SFT and BW or BCS as well as a classification of BCS-based fatness [overweight (BCS = 4), ideal (BCS = 3) and lean (BCS = 2)]., Results: SFT was found to differ between the five regions considered (P < 0.001). Abdomen and thigh were the areas displaying the widest variation for the different dogs included in the study and also those correlating most with BW, in contrast to the chest, which showed the least variation. Overall, a strong correlation was found between BCS and SFT. The highest correlations were established for the flank, abdomen and lumbar areas. In every anatomical area, a decrease in SFT was observed across all three BCS classes, ranging from 48 to 65 % among overweight and ideal dogs, and from 46 to 83 % among ideal and lean dogs., Conclusions: Preliminary data showed that within this population there was a strong correlation between BCS and SFT estimated from RTU images. It was also observed that RTU measurements for fat thickness differed among the anatomical points surveyed suggesting differences in their sensitivity to a change in BCS. The images displaying the best prediction value for fatness variations were those collected at the lumbar and abdomen areas.

The objective of this study was to determine if maternal body fat composition and body mass index were associated with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) in the first trimester of pregnancy. Healthy pregnant women (n = 30) without nausea and vomiting (control group) and women with HG (n = 54; study group), all with singleton pregnancy at 6-14 weeks gestational age, were included. Body mass index was measured before and during pregnancy. Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous fat thickness were measured during pregnancy. Comparison of the groups revealed that VAT and pre-pregnancy body mass index but not subcutaneous fat thickness were significantly higher in the HG group versus controls. VAT and pre-pregnancy body mass index predicted 83.8% and 67.1% of HG cases, respectively. VAT and pre-pregnancy body mass index were correlated with the development of hyperemesis gravidrum and hence could be considered as predictive markers for HG.

Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) can be diagnosed by hormonal measurements; however, it would be important to find simpler measurements that allow easy identification of affected or at risk individuals. In horses, the dorsal neck region is one of the most frequent anatomical sites for fat deposition and neck obesity has been linked to EMS. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of hormonal markers of obesity (leptin) and insulin resistance (insulin) with morphometric and ultrasonographic neck measurements in Andalusian horses. Plasma leptin and insulin concentrations were measured by RIA in 127 Andalusian horses. Neck circumferences (NC) were measured at 3 equidistant locations at 25%, 50%, and 75% of neck length (NC-25%, NC-50%, and NC-75%). At the same 3 locations, subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT-25%, SFT-50%, and SFT-75%) was measured ultrasonographically. In the population under study, a tendency to adiposity was confirmed by the elevated plasma leptin levels (7.47 ± 5.03 ng/mL). However, plasma insulin concentrations (4.05 ± 3.74 μIU/mL) were within normal range in most horses. Our results indicate that NC showed significant sexual dimorphism and did not correlate well with hormonal measurements. Ultrasonographic assessment of fat thickness at the base of the neck (SFT-75%) was significantly correlated with both plasma leptin and insulin and did not show differences between males and females. Thus, in the search for a single objective parameter which can be used in large populations, SFT-75% is a potential candidate and may be a meaningful parameter to predict EMS., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Background/aims: Skin thickness and subcutaneous fat thickness of newborn infants may reflect the condition of the infant including prematurity. Skin thickness and subcutaneous fat thickness might be useful parameters to characterize and monitor the nutritional state of the infant. The objective was to introduce ultrasonography for this purpose., Methods: A high-frequency (20 MHz) ultrasound A-mode scanner was employed. Skinfold caliper recordings were performed for comparison. Frontal skin and skin of the back were studied in 7 infants with body weight 1095-4750 g (also studied with B-mode scanning). 46 infants weighing 925-4120 g were studied and correlated with skinfold recording., Results: A high degree of correlation between skinfold recordings and ultrasound measurements (A-mode) of subcutaneous fat was found, coefficient of correlation 0.84, p<0.001., Conclusions: High-frequency ultrasound measurement of skin and subcutaneous fat thickness is precise and reliable for in vivo assessment of body fat in newborn infants. Further validation of the technique relative to neonatal skin and nutritional state is, however, needed before the ultrasound technique can be used as routine in neonatalogical monitoring.
