Technological advances in the past decade, hardware and software alike, have made access to high-performance computing (HPC) easier than ever. We review these advances from a statistical computing perspective. Cloud computing makes access to supercomputers affordable. Deep learning software libraries make programming statistical algorithms easy and enable users to write code once and run it anywhere-from a laptop to a workstation with multiple graphics processing units (GPUs) or a supercomputer in a cloud. Highlighting how these developments benefit statisticians, we review recent optimization algorithms that are useful for high-dimensional models and can harness the power of HPC. Code snippets are provided to demonstrate the ease of programming. We also provide an easy-to-use distributed matrix data structure suitable for HPC. Employing this data structure, we illustrate various statistical applications including large-scale positron emission tomography and ℓ 1 -regularized Cox regression. Our examples easily scale up to an 8-GPU workstation and a 720-CPU-core cluster in a cloud. As a case in point, we analyze the onset of type-2 diabetes from the UK Biobank with 200,000 subjects and about 500,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms using the HPC ℓ 1 -regularized Cox regression. Fitting this half-million-variate model takes less than 45 minutes and reconfirms known associations. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the feasibility of penalized regression of survival outcomes at this scale.

In 2019, members of the Executive Committee of the International Association for Statistical Computing (IASC) were contacted by members of the IASC from Africa asking whether it would be feasible to establish a new regional IASC section in Africa. The establishment of a new regional section requires several steps that are outlined in the IASC Statutes at https://iasc-isi.org/statutes/. The approval likely depends on whether the proposed new regional section has the potential to conduct typical section activities, such as organizing regional conferences, workshops, and short courses. To establish whether it is feasible to add a regional section in Africa, the IASC must know whether there is currently enough high-level activity within African countries with respect to computational statistics. To answer this question, we looked at author affiliations of articles published in the Springer journal Computational Statistics (COST) and the Elsevier journal Computational Statistics & Data Analysis (CSDA) from 2015 to 2020 and used these data as a proxy to compare author productivity for authors with an affiliation in Africa in 2019 and 2020, compared to authors with an affiliation in Latin America in 2015 and 2016. The world is becoming increasingly complex, both in terms of the rich sources of data we have access to and the statistical and computational methods we can use on data. These factors create an ever-increasing risk for errors in code and the sensitivity of findings to data preparation and the execution of complex statistical and computing methods. The consequences of coding and data mistakes can be substantial. In this paper, we describe the key steps for implementing a code quality assurance (QA) process that researchers can follow to improve their coding practices throughout a project to assure the quality of the final data, code, analyses, and results. These steps include: (i) adherence to principles for code writing and style that follow best practices; (ii) clear written documentation that describes code, workflow, and key analytic decisions; (iii) careful version control; (iv) good data management; and (v) regular testing and review. Following these steps will greatly improve the ability of a study to assure results are accurate and reproducible. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which causes severe respiratory illness, has become a pandemic. The World Health Organization has declared it a public health crisis of international concern. We developed a susceptible, exposed, infected, recovered (SEIR) model for COVID-19 to show the importance of estimating the reproduction number (R 0 ). This work is focused on predicting the COVID-19 outbreak in its early stage in India based on an estimation of R 0 . The developed model will help policymakers to take active measures prior to the further spread of COVID-19. Data on daily newly infected cases in India from March 2, 2020 to April 2, 2020 were to estimate R 0 using the earlyR package. The maximum-likelihood approach was used to analyze the distribution of R 0 values, and the bootstrap strategy was applied for resampling to identify the most likely R 0 value. We estimated the median value of R 0 to be 1.471 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.351 to 1.592) and predicted that the new case count may reach 39,382 (95% CI, 34,300 to 47,351) in 30 days.

plantGlycoMS is a set of tools, implemented in R, which is used to assess and validate glycopeptide spectrum matches (gPSMs). Validity of gPSMs is based on characteristic fragmentation patterns of glycopeptides (gPSMvalidator), adherence of the glycan moiety to the known N-glycan biosynthesis pathway in plants (pGlycoFilter), and elution of the glycopeptide within the observed retention time window of other glycopeptides sharing the same peptide backbone (rt.Restrict). plantGlycoMS also contains a tool for relative quantitation of glycoforms based on selected ion chromatograms of glycopeptide ion precursors in the mass spectrometry level 1 data (glycoRQ). This protocol walks the user through this workflow with example mass spectrometry data obtained for a plant glycoprotein.

Due to urbanization and population growth, the degradation of natural forests and associated biodiversity are now widely recognized as a global environmental concern. Hence, there is an urgent need for rapid assessment and monitoring of biodiversity on priority using state-of-art tools and technologies. The main purpose of this research article is to develop and implement a new methodological approach to characterize biological diversity using spatial model developed during the study viz. Spatial Biodiversity Model (SBM). The developed model is scale, resolution and location independent solution for spatial biodiversity richness modelling. The platform-independent computation model is based on parallel computation. The biodiversity model based on open-source software has been implemented on R statistical computing platform. It provides information on high disturbance and high biological richness areas through different landscape indices and site specific information (e.g. forest fragmentation (FR), disturbance index (DI) etc.). The model has been developed based on the case study of Indian landscape; however it can be implemented in any part of the world. As a case study, SBM has been tested for Uttarakhand state in India. Inputs for landscape ecology are derived through multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) techniques in an interactive command line environment. MCDM with sensitivity analysis in spatial domain has been carried out to illustrate the model stability and robustness. One of the cornerstones of the R system for statistical computing is the multitude of packages contributed by numerous package authors. This amount of packages makes an extremely broad range of statistical techniques and other quantitative methods freely available. Thus far, no empirical study has investigated psychological factors that drive authors to participate in the R project. This article presents a study of R package authors, collecting data on different types of participation (number of packages, participation in mailing lists, participation in conferences), three psychological scales (types of motivation, psychological values, and work design characteristics), and various socio-demographic factors. The data are analyzed using item response models and subsequent generalized linear models, showing that the most important determinants for participation are a hybrid form of motivation and the social characteristics of the work design. Other factors are found to have less impact or influence only specific aspects of participation.

Background: The Monte Carlo simulation of sequence evolution is routinely used to assess the performance of phylogenetic inference methods and sequence alignment algorithms. Progress in the field of molecular evolution fuels the need for more realistic and hence more complex simulations, adapted to particular situations, yet current software makes unreasonable assumptions such as homogeneous substitution dynamics or a uniform distribution of indels across the simulated sequences. This calls for an extensible simulation framework written in a high-level functional language, offering new functionality and making it easy to incorporate further complexity., Results: PhyloSim is an extensible framework for the Monte Carlo simulation of sequence evolution, written in R, using the Gillespie algorithm to integrate the actions of many concurrent processes such as substitutions, insertions and deletions. Uniquely among sequence simulation tools, PhyloSim can simulate arbitrarily complex patterns of rate variation and multiple indel processes, and allows for the incorporation of selective constraints on indel events. User-defined complex patterns of mutation and selection can be easily integrated into simulations, allowing PhyloSim to be adapted to specific needs., Conclusions: Close integration with R and the wide range of features implemented offer unmatched flexibility, making it possible to simulate sequence evolution under a wide range of realistic settings. We believe that PhyloSim will be useful to future studies involving simulated alignments.

An introduction to the R project for statistical computing (www.R-project.org) is presented. The main topics are: 1. To make the professional community aware of "R" as a potent and free software for graphical and statistical analysis of medical data; 2. Simple well-known statistical tests are fairly easy to perform in R, but more complex modelling requires programming skills; 3. R is seen as a tool for teaching statistics and implementing complex modelling of medical data among medical professionals.

Recent history and developments related to the increase in statistical computing activities in the United States and by U.S. participants in international efforts are reviewed, with emphasis on important events, organizations, references, and products which contribute to informed selection and use of statistical programs. Three features matrices for major statistical packages are included as potential aids to Japanese statisticians in assessing the utility of these packages in biostatistical applications.

Alexander disease (AxD) is a rare and severe neurodegenerative disorder caused by mutations in glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). While the exact disease mechanism remains unknown, previous studies suggest that mutant GFAP influences many cellular processes, including cytoskeleton stability, mechanosensing, metabolism, and proteasome function. While most studies have primarily focused on GFAP-expressing astrocytes, GFAP is also expressed by radial glia and neural progenitor cells, prompting questions about the impact of GFAP mutations on central nervous system (CNS) development. In this study, we observed impaired differentiation of astrocytes and neurons in co-cultures of astrocytes and neurons, as well as in neural organoids, both generated from AxD patient-derived induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells with a GFAP R239C mutation. Leveraging single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), we identified distinct cell populations and transcriptomic differences between the mutant GFAP cultures and a corrected isogenic control. These findings were supported by results obtained with immunocytochemistry and proteomics. In co-cultures, the GFAP R239C mutation resulted in an increased abundance of immature cells, while in unguided neural organoids and cortical organoids, we observed altered lineage commitment and reduced abundance of astrocytes. Gene expression analysis revealed increased stress susceptibility, cytoskeletal abnormalities, and altered extracellular matrix and cell-cell communication patterns in the AxD cultures, which also exhibited higher cell death after stress. Objective: We previously demonstrated safe treatment of low- to moderate-severity (LTM) diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) using the SQuID protocol (subcutaneous insulin in DKA) in a non-intensive care unit (ICU) observation setting, with decreased emergency department length of stay (EDLOS). Here, we expand eligibility to include sicker patients and admission to a regular medical floor and collected more detailed clinical data in a near-real-time fashion., Methods: This is a real-world, prospective, observational cohort study in an urban academic hospital (March 4, 2023-March 4, 2024). LTM DKA patients were treated with IV insulin (floor or ICU) or on SQuID. We compare fidelity (time to glargine and dextrose-containing fluids), safety (rescue dextrose for hypoglycemia), effectiveness (time to anion gap closure, time on protocol), and operational efficiency (time to bed request, EDLOS, and ICU admission rate since implementation of the protocol)., Results: Of 84 patients with LTM DKA, 62 (74%) of were treated with SQuID and 22 (26%) with IV insulin. Fidelity was high in both groups. Rescue dextrose was required in five (8%) versus four (18%) patients, respectively (difference 9%, -31% to 10%). Compared to the IV insulin group, time to anion gap was 1.4 h shorter (95% CI -3.4 to 0.2 h) and time on protocol was 10.4 h shorter (95% CI -22.3 to -5.0 h) in SQuID patients. Median EDLOS was lower in the SQuID cohort 9.8 h (IQR 6.0-13.6) than the IV floor cohort 18.3 h (IQR 13.4-22.0 h), but longer than the overall IV insulin cohort. Since inception of SQuID, ICU admission rate in LTM DKA has decreased from 54% to under 21%., Conclusions: In this single-center study, we observed excellent fidelity, equivalent or superior safety, and clinical and operational effectiveness with SQuID compared to IV insulin. The SQuID protocol has become the de facto default pathway for treatment of LTM DKA. Objectives: Visual and contextual cues facilitate speech recognition in suboptimal listening conditions (e.g., background noise, hearing loss, hearing aid signal processing). Moreover, successful speech recognition in challenging listening conditions is linked to cognitive abilities such as working memory and fluid intelligence. However, it is unclear which cognitive abilities facilitate the use of visual and contextual cues in individuals with normal hearing and hearing aid users. The first aim was to investigate whether individuals with hearing aid users rely on visual and contextual cues to a higher degree than individuals with normal hearing in a speech-in-noise recognition task. The second aim was to investigate whether working memory and fluid intelligence are associated with the use of visual and contextual cues in these groups., Design: Groups of participants with normal hearing and hearing aid users with bilateral, symmetrical mild to severe sensorineural hearing loss were included (n = 169 per group). The Samuelsson and Rönnberg task was administered to measure speech recognition in speech-shaped noise. The task consists of an equal number of sentences administered in the auditory and audiovisual modalities, as well as without and with contextual cues (visually presented word preceding the sentence, e.g.,: "Restaurant"). The signal to noise ratio was individually set to 1 dB below the level obtained for 50% correct speech recognition in the hearing-in-noise test administered in the auditory modality. The Reading Span test was used to measure working memory capacity and the Raven test was used to measure fluid intelligence. The data were analyzed using linear mixed-effects modeling., Results: Both groups exhibited significantly higher speech recognition performance when visual and contextual cues were available. Although the hearing aid users performed significantly worse compared to those with normal hearing in the auditory modality, both groups reached similar performance levels in the audiovisual modality. In addition, a significant positive relationship was found between the Raven test score and speech recognition performance only for the hearing aid users in the audiovisual modality. There was no significant relationship between Reading Span test score and performance., Conclusions: Both participants with normal hearing and hearing aid users benefitted from contextual cues, regardless of cognitive abilities. The hearing aid users relied on visual cues to compensate for the perceptual difficulties, reaching a similar performance level as the participants with normal hearing when visual cues were available, despite worse performance in the auditory modality. It is important to note that the hearing aid users who had higher fluid intelligence were able to capitalize on visual cues more successfully than those with poorer fluid intelligence, resulting in better speech-in-noise recognition performance., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflicts of interest to disclose., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Judgments of learning (JOLs) are designed to reveal processes of memory monitoring but recent research has shown that JOLs can also have reactive effects on memory performance. A recently proposed account for JOL reactivity is based on the item-specific/relational framework, a general account of memory encoding that has been applied to a wide range of memory phenomena. Importantly, the effects of these phenomena on free recall performance are generally moderated by list composition: the effects are stronger in mixed than pure list manipulations - that is, these phenomena exhibit design effects. Applied to JOL reactivity, the item-specific/relational account likewise predicts design effects. Specifically, the account predicts that JOL reactivity should be more positive in mixed compared to pure lists. In three experiments, judgment condition (JOL vs. no JOL) and list type (mixed vs. pure) were manipulated and memory assessed with free recall. As hypothesized, JOL reactivity was consistently more positive in mixed than pure lists, a result found with related word pairs (Experiment 1), unrelated word pairs (Experiment 2), and lists of single words (Experiment 3). Prey adopt various antipredator responses to minimize the risk of predation, and the fitness costs of antipredator responses can have emergent effects on the population dynamics of prey species. While the trade-off between food acquisition and predation avoidance has long been recognized in predicting antipredator responses, less attention has been paid to the dynamics of the food-safety trade-off driven by temporal variation in multiple risk factors under changing seasonal conditions. Here, we monitored foraging and vigilance behaviour of a central prey species, snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus), at fine temporal scales over the winter with various types of predation risk, while also experimentally manipulating predation risk by attracting predators to foraging patches. Hares increased foraging and decreased vigilance over the winter, but hares under chronic risk decreased their antipredator efforts to a lesser degree, indicating that those individuals prioritized risk avoidance over food acquisition. Hares also decreased foraging and increased antipredator efforts in response to the temporal activity of predators and environmental cues of predation risk. However, the magnitude of the responses to the environmental cues was mediated by time of winter. While we did not detect a reactive response of hares to acute risk, we did find that hares exhibiting camouflage mismatch proactively increased vigilance. Overall, our results highlight the importance of species-specific traits and changing seasonal conditions in addition to temporal variation in multiple risk factors in predicting antipredator responses and the context dependence of risk effects., (© 2024 The Author(s). Like alien plant invasion, range expansion of native plants may threaten biodiversity and economies, rendering them native invaders. Variation in abiotic and biotic conditions across a large geographic scale greatly affects variation in traits and interactions with herbivores of native plant invaders, which is an interesting yet mostly unexplored issue. We used a common garden experiment to compare defensive/nutritional traits and palatability to generalist herbivores of 20 native (23.64° N-30.18° N) and introduced range (31.58° N-36.87° N) populations of Reynoutria japonica, which is a native invader following range expansion in China. We analyzed the relationships among herbivore pressure, climate, plant chloroplast haplotypes, leaf traits, and herbivore performance. Of the 16 variables tested, we observed range differences in 11 variables and latitudinal clines in nine variables. In general, herbivores performed better on the introduced plants than on the native plants, and better on the high-latitude plants than on the low-latitude plants within the introduced populations. Three key traits (leaf thickness, specific leaf area, and carbon-to-nitrogen [C:N] ratio) determined palatability to herbivores and were significantly associated with temperature and/or precipitation of plant provenance as well as with plant haplotypes but not with herbivore pressure. Our results revealed a causal sequence from plant-range-based environmental forces and genetic context to plant quality and palatability to herbivores in R. japonica. Urban environments often present environmental conditions that facilitate the introduction and establishment of nonnative and invasive species. These can expand their range into areas with unfavorable climates by taking advantage of the ecological and climatic homogenization of cities, bypassing the ecological barriers presented by the surrounding environment. One way to monitor the expansion of these species is using potential distribution models. We used as a model species the Argentine ant, Linepithema humile (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) whose invasion has caused serious consequences for biodiversity and economic losses worldwide. We used the average result of six different algorithms and used climatic variables and population density as a proxy for the urbanization level in the Western Palearctic to build the predictive model. The model indicates this ant prefers to inhabit areas with Mediterranean and Temperate Oceanic climates and that its suitability depends on two main factors: the continentality (temperature annual range) and the degree of urbanization. The species is predicted to be absent in areas with large temperature contrasts throughout the year, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas (i.e. adjacent to urban areas) of inland regions. Conversely, the species has a predilection for coastal and urban areas where environmental conditions are attenuated by the influence of the sea or the "urban heat island" effect in the case of inland cities. In this sense, cities act as "bioclimatic islands" facilitating the establishment of the Argentine ant as a reservoir, enlarging its distribution into climatically nonoptimal areas, and promoting its future expansion in a scenario of global warming and socioeconomic change., (© 2024 The Author(s). Oropharyngeal Dysphagia (OD) increases the risk of hospitalization and the use of health services; however, it is often detected and studied in institutionalized patients with limited attention given to the community. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of OD and its associated factors after conducting a program consisting of a systematic assessment of OD for in patients living independently in their dwellings and requiring home-based care. We conducted a cross-sectional study involving a systematic assessment of disabled and elderly patients enrolled in a home-based primary care program at three urban centers (Barcelona, Spain). OD was assessed using the Volume-Viscosity Swallow Test. Data on morbidity, incontinence, functional independence, pressure sore risk, brain deficit, social risk, nutritional status, and healthcare utilization were collected. Prevalence was determined, and differences between OD and non-OD patients were analysed using independent tests. Associations between OD and hospital admissions, emergency department visits, emergency home ambulance use, and consultations with family physicians or primary care nurses were examined using logistic regression models adjusted for covariates. We included 1,002 patients with a mean age of 88.75 years old (SD = 8.19), 73.05% of whom were female. The prevalence of OD was 25.95% (95% CI 23.26%-28.78%). OD was associated with past pneumonia episodes (adjusted OR: 5.09, 95% CI: 2.2-11.79), increased frequency of cough and common cold (adjusted OR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.05-1.18), and more family physician consultations (adjusted OR: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.03-1.10). These findings highlight that OD remains an underdiagnosed geriatric syndrome in the community setting. Implementing systematic OD diagnoses assessments, especially among home care-based patients could reduce the incidence of secondary pneumonia, decrease cough episodes, and lower the frequency of clinician consultations., (© 2024. Background: Dietary fibers can alter microbial metabolic output in support of healthy immune function; however, the impact of distinct fiber sources and immunomodulatory effects beyond short-chain fatty acid production are underexplored. In an effort to discern the effects of diverse fibers on host immunity, we employed five distinct rodent diets with varying fiber content and source in specific-pathogen-free, gnotobiotic (containing a 14-member synthetic human gut microbiota), and germ-free mice., Results: Broad-scale metabolomics analysis of cecal contents revealed that fiber deprivation consistently reduced the concentrations of microbiota-produced B vitamins. This phenomenon was not always explained by reduced biosynthesis, rather, metatranscriptomic analyses pointed toward increased microbial usage of certain B vitamins under fiber-free conditions, ultimately resulting in a net reduction of host-available B vitamins. Broad immunophenotyping indicated that the local gut effector immune populations and activated T cells accumulate in a microbiota-dependent manner. Supplementation with the prebiotic inulin recovered the availability of microbially produced B vitamins and restored immune homeostasis., Conclusions: Our findings highlight the potential to use defined fiber polysaccharides to boost microbiota-derived B vitamin availability in an animal model and to regulate local innate and adaptive immune populations of the host. Marine litter (ML) represents an escalating environmental issue, particularly in Latin America, where comprehensive studies are scarce despite critical solid waste management challenges and continuous human modification occurring on the coasts. To contribute to the knowledge of ML in the southeast Pacific, this study examined contamination across 10 beaches on Peru's extensive coast. Overall, ML contamination was categorized as moderate (with an ML concentration of 0.49 ± 0.64 items∙m -2 ), while significantly differing between summer (dirty with an ML concentration of 0.56 ± 0.66 items∙m -2 ) and winter (moderate with an ML concentration of 0.47 ± 0.60 items∙m -2 ). Three beaches were extremely dirty (concentrations of ML exceeded 1.0 items∙m -2 ). Predominant materials, items, and sources were plastic, cigarette butts (CBs), and mixed packaging. The Peruvian coast faced CB leachate impact (CBPI = 3.5 ± 3.5), reaching severe levels on two beaches, with considerable hazardous litter (HALI = 3.0 ± 2.9). Recent studies suggest that cognateness boosts bilingual lexical acquisition. This study proposes an account in which language co-activation accelerates accumulation of word-learning instances across languages. This account predicts a larger cognate facilitation for words in the lower-exposure language than in the higher-exposure language, as the former receive co-activation from their translations more frequently. Bayesian Item Response Theory was used to model acquisition trajectories for 604 Catalan-Spanish translations from a dataset of 366 12-32 month-old bilinguals (M = 22.23 months, 175 female, mainly White, collected 2020-2022). Results show a larger cognate facilitation for words in the lower-exposure language (d = .276), than for words in the higher-exposure language (d = .022), supporting a language exposure-moderated account for the effect of cognateness on lexical acquisition., (© 2024 The Author(s). As spring phenology advances with climate change, so too must the timing of life cycle events. Breeding at the right time is critical in many species as it maximizes fitness. For long-distance migratory birds, flexibility in the duration of the arrival-breeding interval (pre-breeding period) may allow populations to adjust their timing of breeding. However, whether first egg-lay dates are flexible to local environmental conditions after arrival, and if they are constrained by the time needed to replenish energy lost during migration, remains unclear. We investigated the regional flexibility of the arrival-breeding interval in an avian migrant, the purple martin, Progne subis, across their breeding range. We evaluated whether the duration of the arrival-breeding interval was flexible to temperature and precipitation at breeding sites, and if timing was limited by migration rate and stopover duration. We also tested if longer interval durations were associated with higher fledging success. To address our hypotheses, we used a combination of migration tracking, weather and breeding data collected from four regions across eastern North America (26.1° N to 52.4° N latitude). We found the arrival-breeding interval to be shortest in the north and longest in the south. Across all regions, warmer temperatures encountered at breeding grounds were associated with shorter intervals, and faster migration rates led to longer intervals. The length of the interval was not influenced by precipitation or stopover duration. Finally, longer intervals were not associated with higher fledge success. Currently, the longer arrival-breeding intervals in this study system, on average 28.3 days, may provide both early and late-arriving birds with ample time for recovery so birds can lay eggs according to temperature. Any negative effects of faster migration may have been buffered by longer arrival-breeding intervals, as interval length did not determine fledge success. With ongoing climate change, further research is needed to examine if arrival-breeding intervals become constrained by migration timing, which may limit opportunities for migrants to match the timing of breeding with key resources., (© 2024 The Author(s). Social interactions influence disease spread, information flow and resource allocation across species, yet heterogeneity in social interaction frequency and its fitness consequences are still poorly understood. Additionally, the role of exogenous chemicals, such as non-nutritive plant metabolites that are utilised by several animal species, in shaping social networks remains unclear. Here, we investigated how non-nutritive plant metabolites impact social interactions and the lifespan of the turnip sawfly, Athalia rosae. Adult sawflies acquire neo-clerodane diterpenoids ('clerodanoids') from non-food plants and this can serve as a defence against predation and increase mating success. We found intraspecific variation in clerodanoids in natural populations and laboratory-reared individuals. Clerodanoids could also be acquired from conspecifics that had prior access to the plant metabolites, which led to increased agonistic social interactions. Network analysis indicated increased social interactions in sawfly groups where some or all individuals had prior access to clerodanoids, while groups with no prior access had fewer interactions. The frequency of social interactions was influenced by the clerodanoid status of the focal individual and that of other conspecifics. Finally, we observed a shorter lifespan in adults with prior clerodanoid access when grouped with individuals without prior access, suggesting that social interactions to obtain clerodanoids have fitness costs. Our findings highlight the role of intraspecific variation in the acquisition of non-nutritional plant metabolites in shaping social networks. Urban tree canopy cover is often unequally distributed across cities such that more socially vulnerable neighborhoods often have lower tree canopy cover than less socially vulnerable neighborhoods. However, how the diversity and composition of the urban canopy affect the nature of social-ecological benefits (and burdens), including the urban forest's vulnerability to climate change, remains underexamined. Here, we synthesize tree inventories developed by multiple organizations and present a species-specific, geolocated database of more than 600,000 urban trees across the 7-county Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) metropolitan area in the Upper Midwest of the United States. We find that tree diversity across the MSP is variable yet dominated by a few species (e.g., Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Acer platanoides, and Gleditsia triacanthos), contributing to the vulnerability of the MSP urban forest to future climate change and disturbances. In contrast to tree canopy cover, tree diversity was not well predicted by socioeconomic or demographic factors. However, our analysis identified areas where both climate and social vulnerability are high. Professional tennis competition at the highest levels requires high physical, technical, tactical, and mental demands. Player retirement is a scenario that often occurs at the highest echelons of the game. The objective of this study was to descriptively determine which factors influence retirement of matches in tennis. Matches from the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tours played over 44 and 46 years were included in the study, respectively. The results showed an increasing trend in the incidence of retirements in both ATP and WTA events, especially in recent years. Factors associated with the match characteristics, such as the type of surface, the type of tournament, and the round of the draw, were shown to influence retirement. Variables associated with player characteristics, such as the age difference between players, did not show to influence retirement, whereas the ranking difference did. When comparing ATP and WTA matches, similar results were observed in which surfaces and tournaments had the highest or lowest incidence of retirements. On the other hand, as per the rounds, the results are not conclusive. The findings highlight the growing trend of match retirements in professional tennis and emphasize the relevant influence of match characteristics such as surface type, tournament type, and round of the draw. These insights can guide coaches, players, and tournament organizers in developing strategies to mitigate retirements and inform future research on enhancing player longevity and performance in tennis., (© 2024 The Author(s). Background: Whether structured exercise therapy improves chemotherapy delivery, tolerability, and tumor response is unclear., Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a phase 2 trial investigating exercise therapy (n = 72) versus usual care (n = 72) in patients with primary breast cancer. Exercise therapy comprised individualized treadmill walking three times weekly for 20-50 minutes per session at 55%-100% of pretreatment exercise capacity. Chemotherapy delivery was assessed according to the relative dose intensity (RDI), tolerability was assessed according to patient-reported outcomes and blood laboratory values, and response was assessed based on the pathologic complete response rate in patients who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy., Results: In the exercise therapy group, 51 patients (71%) reached 100% RDI (median, 100%; interquartile range, 100%-100%) compared with 41 patients (57%) in the usual care group (median, 100%; interquartile range, 95%-100%; p = .08). Tolerability was similar in both groups; the rates of grade 3 or higher neutropenia and anemia were 22% versus 39% and 7% versus 10% in the exercise and usual care groups, respectively. In patients who received anthracyclines (n = 104), 41 (77%) had 100% chemotherapy RDI in the exercise therapy group versus 29 (57%) in the usual care group (p = .026). In the neoadjuvant chemotherapy subgroup (n = 51 tumors), the postneoadjuvant therapy (yp) pathologic complete response (ypT0ypN0) rate was 27% (95% confidence interval, 12%-50%) in the exercise therapy group compared with 28% (95% confidence interval, 13%-47%) in the usual care group (p > .9)., Conclusions: In patients with primary breast cancer, exercise therapy was associated with improved delivery of anthracycline-based chemotherapy. Perceived control (PC) is associated with lower perceived stress, but the mechanisms of this relationship have not yet been established. The current study examined whether moderate or vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) mediated the relationship between PC and daily stress in a sample of US adults. Participants (N = 264, M age  = 34.08, 61.4% female) completed a baseline measure of two dimensions of PC (i.e., mastery and constraints), followed by 11 days of daily surveys that assessed daily MVPA and perceived stress. We employed linear mixed effects modelling to estimate the within-and between-person indirect effects (IE) of MVPA on the relationships between each dimension of PC and daily perceived stress. Greater PC (i.e., higher mastery and lower constraints) was associated with a higher frequency of MVPA engagement, and participants reported lower levels of end-of-day perceived stress on the days in which they had engaged in MVPA. We observed within-person mediating effects of MVPA on the relationship between both PC dimensions and daily stress (mastery: within-person IE = -0.03, 95% CI: [-0.06, -0.01]; constraints: within-person IE = 0.03, 95% CI: [0.01, 0.06]). These findings suggest that MVPA is a potential mechanism through which US adults with greater PC experience reduced levels of daily stress. Zooplankton monitoring is important for understanding their population dynamics and life history, ecosystem health, and environmental changes. Compared with traditional morphological identification, environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis allows for more sensitive and efficient monitoring of zooplankton diversity. Previous eDNA studies have primarily used metabarcoding approaches to reveal their richness and composition, whereas its performance in predicting zooplankton abundance remains understudied. We conducted water and bulk sampling in Lake Biwa, Japan, showing that the number of sequence reads by metabarcoding moderately correlated with eDNA concentrations estimated by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). In addition, the eDNA read number was significantly related to cladoceran and copepod abundance estimated by microscopy sorting, although there remained too much uncertainty in the read-abundance relationship. Moreover, there was a significant difference in species composition between eDNA metabarcoding and sorting. Although our results indicated the potential applicability of eDNA metabarcoding for quantifying multiple zooplankton abundance, several methodological validations in eDNA metabarcoding would also be required to optimize its performance in the future., (© 2024. Background: The alignment between objective scores and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) is underexplored. This study aimed to assess changes in Nasal Polyp Score (NPS) and Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT) scores in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) patients undergoing dupilumab treatment and explore correlations between these scores., Methods: CRSwNP patients received dupilumab therapy for six months. SNOT-20 German Adapted Version (GAV)/SNOT-22 scores were assessed weekly, and NPS was measured at baseline and after one, three, and six months. Correlations were analyzed using Spearman's rank correlation and regression analysis., Results: 69 patients were included. After one, three and six months of dupilumab therapy, SNOT and NPS scores improved significantly. Correlation analysis of SNOT and NPS showed significant correlations only within the nasal subscores, along with a weak trend for SNOT-20. Absolute changes over time lacked significance. However, correlation analysis revealed significant associations between relative changes in SNOT score and NPS, irrespective of timing, and when stratified by baseline NPS of 8, 6, and 4 (r = -0.54, p = 0.01; r = -0.44, p < 0.001; r = -0.7, p < 0.001). This was supported by linear regression modeling, suggesting potential predictive capability of NPS reduction on relative SNOT score improvement., Conclusion: Dupilumab therapy significantly improved subjective and objective CRSwNP scores, exhibiting weak correlations in absolute values for nasal subscores. Furthermore, evidence indicated a correlation between relative changes in SNOT score and NPS, substantiated by predictive capability. Semiochemicals left by predators in their foraging area can be utilised by prey to avoid predation. The range of predators' chemical cues with contrasting degradation rates might provide information of different quality, potentially allowing prey to differentiate between the immediate and the longer-term presence of predators in a location. So far, knowledge about the roles of volatile versus stable chemical cues in informing predation risk is limited. We here seek to disentangle the role of ephemeral trail pheromones compared to persistent cuticular hydrocarbons of ants (predators) on the antipredator behaviour of juvenile spiders (prey), with the expectation that volatile semiochemicals induce avoidance behaviour in spiders at a higher rate compared to stable cues. We allowed the spiders to choose between sites with and without ant cues separately for volatile trail pheromones and stable hydrocarbons. Unexpectedly, spiders avoided the presence of persistent cuticular hydrocarbons more clearly than the highly volatile trail pheromone. This underscores the widespread impact of these stable cues on the avoidance behaviour of potential intraguild prey. The response to trail pheromones was unclear, possibly because spiders always encounter these cues simultaneously with visual and vibratory cues from ants; hence, trail pheromones may not contain any additional information, hindering the evolution of the ability to detect them., (© 2024. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Recent trials have shown that immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), atezolizumab and durvalumab, in combination with chemotherapy, are effective in treating extensive-disease small-cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC). However, owing to the expensiveness of ICIs, monetary issues arise. The cost-effectiveness of ICI combination treatment with carboplatin plus etoposide (CE) as first-line therapy for patients with ED-SCLC was examined to aid public health policy in Japan., Methods: IMpower 133 and CASPIAN data were used to create a partitioned survival model. Medical expenses and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were considered. The analysis period, discount rate, and threshold were set at 20 years, 2%, and 15 million Japanese yen (JPY) [114,068 US dollars (USD)] per QALY, respectively. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was calculated by gathering reasonable parameters from published reports and combining the costs and effects using parametric models. Monte Carlo simulations, scenario analysis, and one-way sensitivity analyses were employed to quantify uncertainty., Results: After comparing atezolizumab plus CE (ACE) and durvalumab plus CE (DCE) with CE, it was found that the ICERs exceeded the threshold at 35,048,299 JPY (266,527 USD) and 36,665,583 JPY (278,826 USD) per QALY, respectively. For one-way sensitivity and scenario assessments, the ICERs exceeded the threshold, even with considerably adjusted parameters. For the probabilistic sensitivity analyses, there was no probability that the ICER of the ICI combination treatment with chemotherapy would fall below the threshold., Conclusion: ACE and DCE were not cost-effective compared with CE as first-line therapy for ED-SCLC in Japan. Background: Many studies have demonstrated that tephritid fruit fly larvae are highly susceptible to entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) and may become infected as they enter the soil to pupate. However, the susceptibility of adult tephritids and their suitability as EPN targets have been less studied. We performed laboratory assays with 12 Australian EPN strains of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, Heterorhabditis indica and Heterorhabditis zealandica in adults of the Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni. Infective juveniles were delivered in a yeast hydrolysate solution that is attractive to flies. We also measured the flight ability of adults up to 3 days after treatment., Result: Flies that consumed the EPN-yeast preparation experienced 72.8-84% mortality. Between 33.5% and 46.2% of EPN-treated adults were still able to fly before death following treatment, mostly within the first day, thereby contributing to EPN dispersal. Another 31.9-39.9% of EPN-treated flies that were unable to fly died as a result of EPN treatment. Overall, >65% of flies that died following EPN treatment had visible signs of infection and EPN reproduction., Conclusion: Our study is foundational to the development of attract-and-kill and autodissemination approaches involving EPNs in fruit fly control. Objectives: Genetic studies of contemporary Puerto Ricans reflect a demographic history characterized by admixture between Indigenous American, African, and European peoples. While previous studies provide genetic perspectives on the general Puerto Rican population, less is known about the island's sub-populations, specifically Afro-Puerto Ricans., Materials and Methods: In this study, the genetic ancestry of Afro-Puerto Ricans is characterized and compared to other Caribbean populations. Thirty DNA samples collected among self-identified Puerto Ricans of African descent in Loíza (n = 2), Piñones (n = 13), San Juan (n = 2), Mayagüez (n = 9), and Ponce (n = 4), were genotyped at 750,000 loci on the National Geographic Genochip. We then applied unsupervised clustering and dimensionality-reduction methods to detect continental and subcontinental African and European genetic ancestry patterns., Results: Admixture analyses reveal that on average, the largest genetic ancestry component for Afro-Puerto Ricans is African in origin, followed by European and Indigenous American genetic ancestry components. African biogeographic origins of Afro-Puerto Ricans align most closely with contemporary peoples of Lower Guinea and the Bight of Biafra, while the European genetic ancestry component is most similar to contemporary Iberian, Italian, and Basque populations. These findings contrast with the biogeographic origins of comparative Barbadian and Puerto Rican populations., Discussion: Our results suggest that while there are similarities with regard to general patterns of genetic ancestry among African descendants in the Caribbean, there is previously unrecognized regional heterogeneity, including among Puerto Rican sub-populations. Objective: Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) online guided self-help programs represent efficacious and accessible treatment options for adults with binge-eating disorder (BED), but research on predictors of treatment outcome is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of emotion regulation difficulties relative to that of negative mood on short- and longer-term treatment outcomes in an online guided self-help programme for BED above and beyond other predictors (age, sex, baseline BED severity)., Methods: Participants were 63 adults (87% female, mean age 37.2 years) with BED. Data was analysed using a hierarchical model approach., Results: Emotion regulation difficulties better predicted both weekly binge-eating frequency and eating disorder (ED) pathology at posttreatment than negative mood, after controlling for the effect of age, sex and baseline BED severity. At 6-month follow-up, neither emotion regulation difficulties nor negative mood further added to the prediction of weekly binge-eating frequency, whereas negative mood, but not emotion regulation difficulties, did so for ED pathology., Conclusion: These findings indicate that emotion regulation difficulties at treatment begin might be a relevant predictor of immediate treatment outcome in online guided self-help for adults with BED but might have lower impact on longer-term treatment outcome than negative mood., Clinical Trial Register Number: The clinical trial register number is not given in this version of the manuscript due to anonymisation., (© 2024 The Author(s). Long-form audio recordings are increasingly used to study individual variation, group differences, and many other topics in theoretical and applied fields of developmental science, particularly for the description of children's language input (typically speech from adults) and children's language output (ranging from babble to sentences). The proprietary LENA software has been available for over a decade, and with it, users have come to rely on derived metrics like adult word count (AWC) and child vocalization counts (CVC), which have also more recently been derived using an open-source alternative, the ACLEW pipeline. Yet, there is relatively little work assessing the reliability of long-form metrics in terms of the stability of individual differences across time. Filling this gap, we analyzed eight spoken-language datasets: four from North American English-learning infants, and one each from British English-, French-, American English-/Spanish-, and Quechua-/Spanish-learning infants. The audio data were analyzed using two types of processing software: LENA and the ACLEW open-source pipeline. When all corpora were included, we found relatively low to moderate reliability (across multiple recordings, intraclass correlation coefficient attributed to the child identity [Child ICC], was < 50% for most metrics). There were few differences between the two pipelines. Exploratory analyses suggested some differences as a function of child age and corpora. These findings suggest that, while reliability is likely sufficient for various group-level analyses, caution is needed when using either LENA or ACLEW tools to study individual variation. Pediatric obesity is a progressive, chronic disease that can lead to serious cardiometabolic complications. Here we investigated the peripheral lipidome in 958 children and adolescents with overweight or obesity and 373 with normal weight, in a cross-sectional study. We also implemented a family-based, personalized program to assess the effects of obesity management on 186 children and adolescents in a clinical setting. Using mass spectrometry-based lipidomics, we report an increase in ceramides, alongside a decrease in lysophospholipids and omega-3 fatty acids with obesity metabolism. Ceramides, phosphatidylethanolamines and phosphatidylinositols were associated with insulin resistance and cardiometabolic risk, whereas sphingomyelins showed inverse associations. Additionally, a panel of three lipids predicted hepatic steatosis as effectively as liver enzymes. Lipids partially mediated the association between obesity and cardiometabolic traits. The nonpharmacological management reduced levels of ceramides, phospholipids and triglycerides, indicating that lowering the degree of obesity could partially restore a healthy lipid profile in children and adolescents., (© 2024. Flooding profoundly impacts soil bacterial communities; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated how flooding (3, 8, and 16 days) and post-flooding (immediately and 2, 5, and 30 days) durations affect soil physicochemical properties, bacterial communities, and their interactions-crucial factors in floodplain nutrient and carbon cycling. The results showed that bacteria constituted 99.9% of the total microbial composition, while archaea, contributing only 0.1%, had a negligible impact on soil traits. At 2-5 days after flooding (DAF), elevated soil electrical conductivity (EC) and pH enhanced soil bacterial abundance and activity, leading to increased water-extractable dissolved organic carbon (DOC), water-extractable total dissolved nitrogen, and biological production (BIX), accompanied by the degradation of soil organic matter (SOM) and aromatic compounds (SUVA 254 ). These changes indicated robust interactions between soil bacterial communities and physicochemical properties affected by flooding events. However, these relationships weakened at 30 DAF, suggesting potential transitions from anaerobic to aerobic conditions in post-flooding soils after 5 DAF. Structural equation modelling indicated that an extended post-flooding duration increased BIX, accompanied by SOM and DOC degradation, providing nutrients and energy to soil microbes and consequently leading to increased bacterial diversity. TechStep was a technology-based trial, with a stepped care approach, to reduce sexual risks and increase PrEP uptake among transgender and gender expansive youth and young adults (15-24 years old). From October 2019 to September 2021, 254 participants were randomized into: 1) Text (n = 82), or 2) Webapp (n = 87), or 3) Control (n = 85). At the 3-month follow-up assessment, those randomized to Text and Webapp and did not demonstrate improvement on primary outcomes were re-randomized to receive virtual eCoaching (Text + or Webapp +), or to remain in their initial condition without eCoaching. Results showed no effect on condomless encounters at 6-month, the primary endpoint, when comparing the Webapp + (0.33 decrease; 95%CI: -0.01, 0.67, p-value = 0.057) or the Text + (0.27 decrease; 95%CI: -0.13, 0.68, p-value = 0.181) conditions to the Control condition. However, in secondary analyses, condomless encounters were significantly reduced for Text compared to Control. Dengue fever is a significant global public health concern, causing substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide. The disease can manifest in various forms, from mild fever to potentially life-threatening complications. Developing effective treatments remains a critical challenge to healthcare systems. Despite extensive research, no antiviral drugs have been approved for either the prevention or treatment of dengue. Targeting the virus during its early phase of attachment is essential to inhibit viral replication. The capsid protein plays a crucial role in the virus's structural integrity, assembly, and viral genome release. In the present study, we employed a computational approach focused on the capsid protein to identify possible potent inhibitors against the dengue virus from a library of FDA-approved drugs. We employed high-throughput virtual screening on FDA-approved drugs to identify drug molecules that could potentially combat the disease and save both cost and time. The screening process identified four drug molecules (Nordihydroguaiaretic acid, Ifenprodil tartrate, Lathyrol, and Safinamide Mesylate) based on their highest binding affinity and MM/GBSA scores. Among these, Nordihydroguaiaretic acid showed higher binding affinity than the reference molecule with - 11.66 kcal/mol. In contrast, Ifenprodil tartrate and Lathyrol showed similar results to the reference molecule, with binding energies of - 9.42 kcal/mol and - 9.29 kcal/mol, respectively. Following the screening, molecular dynamic simulations were performed to explore the molecular stability and conformational possibilities. The drug molecules were further supported by post-molecular simulation analysis. Furthermore, binding energies were also computed using the MM/GBSA approach, and the free energy landscape was used to calculate the different transition states, revealing that the drugs exhibited significant transition states. Specifically, Nordihydroguaiaretic acid and Ifenprodil tartrate displayed higher flexibility, while Lathyrol and Safinamide Mesylate showed more predictable and consistent protein folding. This significant breakthrough offers new hope against dengue, highlighting the power of computational drug discovery in identifying potent inhibitors and paving the way for novel treatment approaches., (© 2024. Aim: Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) is a common condition. Despite a relatively large proportion of patients presenting as post-pubertal adolescents, only small cohorts focusing on this PSD subcategory have been published, and surgical treatment remains challenging., Method: The study is based on a prospective database established at Randers Regional Hospital in 2016. All patients undergoing Bascom's cleft lift (BCL) surgery from June 2016 until June 2020 were included in this study, focusing on patients ≤18 years of age comparing them to adult patients. Indications for BCL surgery were primary extensive manifestation, non-healing disease after previous elective surgery or disease recurrence., Results: In total, n = 380 PSD patients were operated, of which n = 79 were post-pubertal adolescents with a median age at time of surgery of 17.2 years (interquartile range 16.3, 18.0). Sixty-six (84%) were boys. Twenty-seven (34%) presented with primary extensive manifestation, 34 (43%) due to non-healing wounds and 18 (23%) due to recurrence. Fifty-four patients (69%) healed uneventfully. There was no difference between the indications of surgery groups in terms of overall healing or time to healing if prolonged (P = 0.6). The median follow-up was 62 months (interquartile range 48, 73), with a 5-year recurrence rate of 19%, compared to 17% (P = 0.6) in the adult population., Conclusion: Our study is the first to investigate long-term clinical outcomes of BCL surgery for PSD in post-pubertal adolescent patients. Recurrences seem to occur more frequently compared to adults. However, we demonstrate that post-pubertal adolescent patients with advanced PSD can be treated with BCL surgery with acceptable outcomes., (© 2024 The Author(s). White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are associated with age-related cognitive impairment and increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. However, the manner by which WMHs contribute to cognitive impairment is unclear. Using a combination of predictive modeling and network neuroscience, we investigated the relationship between structural white matter connectivity and age, fluid cognition, and WMHs in 68 healthy adults (18-78 years). Consistent with previous work, WMHs were increased in older adults and exhibited a strong negative association with fluid cognition. Extending previous work, using predictive modeling, we demonstrated that age, WMHs, and fluid cognition were jointly associated with widespread alterations in structural connectivity. Subcortical-cortical connections between the thalamus/basal ganglia and frontal and parietal regions of the default mode and frontoparietal networks were most prominent. At the network level, both age and WMHs were negatively associated with network density and communicability, and positively associated with modularity. Spatially, WMHs were most prominent in arterial zones served by the middle cerebral artery and associated lenticulostriate branches that supply subcortical regions. Finally, WMHs overlapped with all major white matter tracts, most prominently in tracts that facilitate subcortical-cortical communication and are implicated in fluid cognition, including the anterior thalamic-radiations and forceps minor. Finally, results of mediation analyses suggest that whole-brain WMH load influences age-related decline in fluid cognition. Thus, across multiple levels of analysis, we showed that WMHs were increased in older adults and associated with altered structural white matter connectivity and network topology involving subcortical-cortical pathways critical for fluid cognition., (© 2024. Two views contend to account for the processes at play during the early stages of visual word recognition. The first holds that these stages are not modulated by the idiosyncratic properties of different languages. The second maintains that the structural properties of the language determine the weighting of the different domains of linguistic knowledge (e.g., orthographic and morphological domains may be differentially weighted across languages). To explore this question, we focused on orthographic priming in Arabic. In this Semitic language, lexical representations are claimed to be based on morphological similarity, with little or no role for orthographic similarity. We conducted two masked priming experiments using the yes-no and go/no-go versions of the lexical decision task to determine if Arabic target words (e.g., مدير 'mudyr', director) are facilitated by nonword primes that are orthographically but not morphologically related (i.e., pairs share neither a root nor a word pattern; e.g.,ماير 'maAyr') relative to unrelated primes. Results showed faster responses for the orthographically related target words than for the unrelated target words in the two experiments. Purpose: Non-optimal vaginal microbiota lacking lactobacilli and comprising a wide array of anaerobic bacteria, typified by community state type (CST) IV, have been associated with adverse gynecological and pregnancy outcomes. Here, we investigate the stability of the vaginal microbiota sampled every 6 months over 18 months and how samples distantly collected combined with exposures could provide insight on future microbiota compositional changes., Methods: Vaginal microbiota dynamics were analyzed in 241 female students aged 18-24 years and negative for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The vaginal microbiota was characterized using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and assigned to CSTs. Vaginal microbiota longitudinal profiles were determined through hierarchical clustering., Results: At baseline, 11.2% of participants had a CST IV, 40.5% a CST I (Lactobacillus crispatus-dominated), and 38.1% a CST III (Lactobacillus iners-dominated). A total of 345 CST transitions were observed over the study period. Pain during sexual intercourse was associated with a higher probability of transition from CST III to CST IV, while self-reported yeast infection was associated with a higher probability of transition from CST IV to CST I. Over the study period, 32.0% participants displayed a stable CST trajectory. Composition of the vaginal microbiota of a single sample predicted with good accuracy the CST trajectory over the following 18 months., Conclusion: Vaginal longitudinal CST patterns over 18 months could be clustered into three main groups of trajectories. The current study aimed to investigate whether the use of formal language (Modern Standard Arabic [MSA]) by young children in diglossic Arab communities offers diagnostic insights, especially for verbal autistic children and to further explore this phenomenon. We used a cohort study design, with 4-6-year-old fluent first language Arabic-speaking children attending Arabic Kindergartens in two representative Kuwait governates. Reported cases for MSA use were assessed via a computer-based structured language test and corroborated cases were further assessed for exposure to sources of MSA, verbal IQ, temperamental characteristics, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Four children from the same class without developmental difficulties were selected for each MSA user as control group. The frequency of MSA use among verbal pre-schoolers was 0.46%. Use of MSA did not correlate with parents' education, amount of exposure to MSA, verbal IQ, but with severity of ASD. Predicted probability of ASD in the presence of MSA was 0.86. Executive functions of ASD-MSA users were similar to those of the control group and significantly higher than unselected autistic peers in the literature. The use of MSA has the potential to serve as a strong sign for the diagnosis of verbal autistic children, often missed or delayed in being diagnosed. The prenatal transfer of testosterone (T) from mother to offspring is an important source of phenotypic plasticity. In birds, exposure to ecologically relevant stimuli, such as social competition or an attractive mate, can cause females to deposit more T into their egg yolks. Exposure to elevated yolk T can modify the expression of several fitness-related traits in offspring (e.g. growth, immune function, secondary sex traits and behaviour). Despite some of these changes being potentially adaptive, not all studies find that yolk T levels change in response to ecologically relevant stimuli. This heterogeneity is currently unexplained, limiting our ability to predict inter-generational responses to ecological change. Here, we performed a systematic literature search and found 119 observations across 39 wild species that measured inter-female variation in yolk T allocation in response to various stimuli. We used boosted regression trees, a form of machine learning, to examine whether species-specific traits or variation in study-level variables could explain variation in yolk T allocation (i.e. statistically significant vs. non-significant responses). We found that both species-specific traits and study-level variables are important predictors of significant changes in yolk T levels. Geographic range (latitude and longitude), evolutionary distinctiveness, longevity, egg mass relative to female mass, sociality, migration status and time to fledge were among the top 10 most influential predictors of the 48 examined. We also found that studies measuring or manipulating social stimuli (e.g. competition and breeding density) or breeding date were more likely to detect changes in yolk T allocation compared with studies examining other ecological contexts. Overall, these data provide several testable hypotheses concerning yolk T allocation and its adaptive value across species and contexts. Aim: To explore the associations between depression, anxiety, decisional conflict and advance care planning engagement and the potential mediating role of decisional conflict in the associations between depression, anxiety and advance care planning among community-dwelling older adults., Design: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 262 community-dwelling older Australians across metropolitan, regional and rural communities between August and October 2022., Methods: Validated self-reported questions were used to collect data on anxiety, depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), decisional conflict (Decisional Conflict Scale), advance care planning engagement (Advance Care Planning Engagement Survey) and covariates (demographic characteristics, health literacy [Health Literacy Screening Questions]), overall health status (Short form 36). Data analysis included descriptive statistics, bivariate association analysis, general linear modelling and path analysis., Results: Anxiety and decisional conflict were directly associated with advance care planning engagement even after controlling for potential effects of demographic characteristics, health literacy and overall health status. The model, including age, gender, country of birth, language spoken at home, education, overall health status, anxiety, depression, decisional conflict and interaction between anxiety and decisional conflict, explained 24.3% of the variance in their advance care planning engagement. Decisional conflict mediated the association between anxiety and advance care planning engagement., Conclusion: Increased anxiety and decisional conflict were associated with reduced advance care planning engagement directly, even among community-dwelling older adults with higher levels of education and health literacy. Increased anxiety was associated with reduced advance care planning engagement indirectly via increased decisional conflict. Healthcare professionals should assess community-dwelling older adults' anxiety and implement interventions to manage their anxiety and decisional conflict, as these may facilitate their engagement in advance care planning., Impact: Understanding factors associated with advance care planning engagement among community-dwelling older adults may inform strategies facilitating their future engagement in advance care planning. Insectivorous predators, including birds and bats, play crucial roles in trophic cascades. However, previous research on these cascades has often relied on permanent predator exclosures, which prevent the isolation of specific effects of birds and bats, given their different activity patterns throughout the day. Moreover, limited knowledge exists regarding the variations in individual effects of these predators under different biotic and abiotic conditions, such as changes in elevation. To address these uncertainties, our study aimed to investigate the distinct effects of bats and birds on arthropod densities in foliage and herbivory damage in lowland and highland rainforests of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Predator exclosures were established for one month to exclude diurnal or nocturnal predators across 120 saplings (ca. 2.5-4 m tall) selected from two lowland and two highland forests (i.e., 30 saplings per study site) along the Mt. Wilhelm transect in PNG. Arthropods were collected and measured, and herbivory damage was analyzed at the end of the experiment. Birds significantly reduced arthropod densities by 30%, particularly in arthropods longer than 10 mm, regardless of elevation. Additionally, both birds and bats appeared to mitigate herbivory damage in highland forests, with protected saplings displaying up to 189% more herbivory. Our results support previous studies that have demonstrated the ability of insectivorous predators to reduce leaf damage through the control of arthropods. Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health concern among young adults and has shown a consistent association with alcohol use. However, previous research has used cross-sectional and daily diary designs that may fail to pinpoint the effects of alcohol use within several hours of IPV occurring. The present study used novel ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods to investigate the bidirectional effect of alcohol use and IPV victimization among young adults with a history of IPV perpetration., Methods: One hundred and sixty-eight young adults (age 18-25 years) in a dating relationship who reported IPV perpetration in the past year completed 28 days of randomly prompted EMA surveys (four surveys daily). The effect of alcohol use on IPV victimization and the effect of IPV victimization on alcohol use were examined., Results: The results indicated that alcohol use co-occurs with psychological and physical IPV victimization. Further, alcohol use significantly increased the odds of physical (OR = 4.94; 95% CI = 2.24-10.87) and sexual (OR = 4.66; 95% CI = 1.64-13.22) IPV victimization, but not psychological IPV victimization, in the subsequent EMA survey. Finally, IPV victimization did not significantly increase the odds of reporting alcohol use in the subsequent EMA survey., Conclusions: Using alcohol is proximally related to IPV victimization among those with a history of IPV perpetration. Consumers exert top-down controls on dryland ecosystem function, but recent increases in fire activity may alter consumer communities in post-fire environments. Native consumers, including ants and rodents, likely have critical roles in defining post-fire plant community assembly and resilience to biological invasions. This study aimed to understand how western harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex occidentalis) that form mounds and large vegetation-free disks that significantly influence plant community structure in the Great Basin Desert respond to fire and rodent community abundance. We tested this by installing treatment plots that excluded or allowed rodents and were burned or unburned in a full factorial design. We measured ant disk and mound size and density in each experimental plot. Fire increased ant mound density by 126% compared to unburned plots. Rodent presence decreased mound density by 59%, mound diameter by 13%, and mound height by 166%. We also show an interaction where the adverse effects of rodents on ant disk density were greater in burned than in unburned plots. The results suggest that booms in rodent populations are likely to have suppressive effects on ant mound and disk formation in native shrublands but that harvester ants may be released from rodent competition with the emergence of invasive grass-fire cycles., (© 2024.
