This paper focuses on the output-feedback control for path-following of underactuated autonomous underwater vehicles subject to multiple uncertainties and unmeasured velocities. First, a novel extended state observer is proposed to estimate the mismatched lumped disturbance and recover the unmeasured velocities. Based on this premise, to overcome the limitation of relying solely on the accurate kinematic model, a disturbance observer-based stabilizing controller is developed. The difference in bandwidths between the observer and the vehicle dynamics allows for a mathematical setup amenable to standard singular perturbation theory. In the fast mode, a kinematic observer is designed to reject system uncertainty caused by unknown attack angular velocity and prohibitive path-tangential angular velocity, using a novel physical perspective. In the slow mode, an interconnected-system control law is proposed by integrating the backstepping technique with the time scale decomposition method. Furthermore, the stability of the overall closed-loop system is established. This article presents a novel extensible continuum robot (ECR) with growing motion capability for improved flexible access in transoral laryngeal procedures. The robot uses an extensible continuum joint with a staggered V-shaped notched structure as the backbone, driven by the pushing and pulling of superelastic Nitinol rods. The notched structure is optimized to achieve a wide range of extension/contraction and bending motion for the continuum joint. The successive and uniform deflection of the notches provides the continuum joint with excellent constant curvature bending characteristics. The bidirectional rod-driven approach expands the robot's extension capabilities with both pushing and pulling operations, and the superelasticity of the driving rods preserves the robot's bending performance. The ECR significantly increases motion dexterity and reachability through its variable length, which facilitates collision-free access to deep lesions by following the anatomy. To further exploit the advantages of the ECR in path-following for flexible access, a growing motion approach inspired by the plant growth process has been proposed to minimize the path deviation error. Characterization experiments are conducted to verify the performances of the proposed ECR. The extension ratio achieves up to 225.92%, and the average distal positioning error and hysteresis error values are 2.87% and 0.51% within the ±120° bending range. Compared with the typical continuum robot with a fixed length, the path-following deviation of this robot is reduced by more than 58.30%, effectively reducing the risk of collision during access. Phantom experiments validate the feasibility of the proposed concept in flexible access procedures.

This paper presents a nonlinear, universal, path-following controller for Wheeled Mobile Robots (WMRs). This approach, unlike previous algorithms, solves the path-following problem for all common categories of holonomic and nonholonomic WMRs, such as omnidirectional, unicycle, car-like, and all steerable wheels. This generality is the consequence of a two-stage solution that tackles separately the platform path-following and wheels' kinematic constraints. In the first stage, for a mobile platform divested of the wheels' constraints, we develop a general paradigm of a path-following controller that plans asymptotic paths from the WMR to the desired path and, accordingly, we derive a realization of the presented paradigm. The second stage accounts for the kinematic constraints imposed by the wheels. In this stage, we demonstrate that the designed controller simplifies the otherwise impenetrable wheels' kinematic and nonholonomic constraints into explicit proportional functions between the velocity of the platform and that of the wheels. This result enables us to derive a closed-form trajectory generation scheme for the asymptotic path that constantly keeps the wheels' steering and driving velocities within their corresponding, pre-specified bounds. Extensive experimental results on several types of WMRs, along with simulation results for the other types, are provided to demonstrate the performance and the efficacy of the method.

We investigate uniform versions of (metric) regularity and strong (metric) regularity on compact subsets of Banach spaces, in particular, along continuous paths. These two properties turn out to play a key role in analyzing path-following schemes for tracking a solution trajectory of a parametric generalized equation or, more generally, of a differential generalized equation (DGE). The latter model allows us to describe in a unified way several problems in control and optimization such as differential variational inequalities and control systems with state constraints. We study two inexact path-following methods for DGEs having the order of the grid error O ( h ) and O ( h 2 ) , respectively. We provide numerical experiments, comparing the schemes derived, for simple problems arising in physics. Finally, we study metric regularity of mappings associated with a particular case of the DGE arising in control theory. We establish the relationship between the pointwise version of this property and its counterpart in function spaces.

Studies of self-controlled practice have shown benefits when learners controlled feedback schedule, use of assistive devices and task difficulty, with benefits attributed to information processing and motivational advantages of self-control. Although haptic assistance serves as feedback, aids task performance and modifies task difficulty, researchers have yet to explore whether self-control over haptic assistance could be beneficial for learning. We explored whether self-control of haptic assistance would be beneficial for learning a tracing task. Self-controlled participants selected practice blocks on which they would receive haptic assistance, while participants in a yoked group received haptic assistance on blocks determined by a matched self-controlled participant. We inferred learning from performance on retention tests without haptic assistance. From qualitative analysis of open-ended questions related to rationales for/experiences of the haptic assistance that was chosen/provided, themes emerged regarding participants' views of the utility of haptic assistance for performance and learning. Results showed that learning was directly impacted by the frequency of haptic assistance for self-controlled participants only and view of haptic assistance. Furthermore, self-controlled participants' views were significantly associated with their requested haptic assistance frequency. We discuss these findings as further support for the beneficial role of self-controlled practice for motor learning.

Researchers in the domain of haptic training are now entering the long-standing debate regarding whether or not it is best to learn a skill by experiencing errors. Haptic training paradigms provide fertile ground for exploring how various theories about feedback, errors and physical guidance intersect during motor learning. Our objective was to determine how error minimizing, error augmenting and no haptic feedback while learning a self-paced curve-tracing task impact performance on delayed (1 day) retention and transfer tests, which indicate learning. We assessed performance using movement time and tracing error to calculate a measure of overall performance - the speed accuracy cost function. Our results showed that despite exhibiting the worst performance during skill acquisition, the error augmentation group had significantly better accuracy (but not overall performance) than the error minimization group on delayed retention and transfer tests. The control group's performance fell between that of the two experimental groups but was not significantly different from either on the delayed retention test. We propose that the nature of the task (requiring online feedback to guide performance) coupled with the error augmentation group's frequent off-target experience and rich experience of error-correction promoted information processing related to error-detection and error-correction that are essential for motor learning.

This article describes a novel add-on for powered wheelchairs that is composed of a gaze-driven control system and a navigation support system. The add-on was tested by three users. All of the users were individuals with severe disabilities and no possibility of moving independently. The system is an add-on to a standard power wheelchair and can be customized for different levels of support according to the cognitive level, motor control, perceptual skills, and specific needs of the user. The primary aim of this study was to test the functionality and safety of the system in the user's home environment. The secondary aim was to evaluate whether access to a gaze-driven powered wheelchair with navigation support is perceived as meaningful in terms of independence and participation. The results show that the system has the potential to provide safe, independent indoor mobility and that the users perceive doing so as fun, meaningful, and a way to reduce dependency on others. Independent mobility has numerous benefits in addition to psychological and emotional well-being. By observing users' actions, caregivers and healthcare professionals can assess the individual's capabilities, which was not previously possible. Rehabilitation can be better adapted to the individual's specific needs, and driving a wheelchair independently can be a valuable, motivating training tool.
