Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes major challenges to mobility and daily life activities and maintaining balance becomes a crucial issue. Individuals with SCI often need to adopt new strategies to manage balance with minimal discomfort. Sports and physical activities have become one of the most popular rehabilitation methods for people with SCI. The assessment of balance improvement currently relies on subjective evaluation scales, and this study aims to quantitively assess the efficacy of sports on the balance strategies of people with SCI. Twenty-two SCI people remained seated still for 30 s, with their eyes open and closed, and we recorded trunk kinematics with an optoelectronic system before and after a three-months sports program. We also computed trunk total sway length, mean velocity, and sway density curve. Statistical analyses were performed to compare SCI people before and after the rehabilitation program and to investigate any correlations between the trunk balance parameters and the clinical scales. The results demonstrate improvements in static balance, with significant reductions in sway length and mean velocity. In conclusion, our findings confirm the potential of sports to enhance balance in SCI individuals and suggest that integrating structured sports programs into rehabilitation can improve stability and postural control.

Addressing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) during a tennis serve is a challenge for both protecting athletes and maintaining performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of MSD occurrence using the rapid whole-body assessment (REBA) ergonomic tool at each time step, using 3D kinematic analysis of joint angles for slow and fast serves. Two force platforms (750 Hz) and an optoelectronic system including 10 infrared cameras (150 Hz, 82 markers located on the whole body and on the racket) were used to capture the kinematics of the six REBA joint areas over five services in two young male and two young female ranked players. The mean REBA score was 9.66 ± 1.11 (ranging from 7.75 to 11.85) with the maximum value observed for the loading and cocking stage (REBA score > 11). The intermediate scores for each of the six joint areas ranged between 2 and 3 and the maximum value of their respective scales. The lowest scores were observed for the shoulder. Neck rotation and shoulder flexion are parameters that could be taken into account when analyzing performance in the context of MSD prevention.

The use of wearable sensors for calculating gait parameters has become increasingly popular as an alternative to optoelectronic systems, currently recognized as the gold standard. The objective of the study was to evaluate the agreement between the wearable Opal system and the optoelectronic BTS SMART DX system for assessing spatiotemporal gait parameters. Fifteen subjects with progressive supranuclear palsy walked at their self-selected speed on a straight path, and six spatiotemporal parameters were compared between the two measurement systems. The agreement was carried out through paired data test, Passing Bablok regression, and Bland-Altman Analysis. The results showed a perfect agreement for speed, a very close agreement for cadence and cycle duration, while, in the other cases, Opal system either under- or over-estimated the measurement of the BTS system. Some suggestions about these misalignments are proposed in the paper, considering that Opal system is widely used in the clinical context.

Although extensive literature exists on forward and backward walking, a comprehensive assessment of gait parameters on a wide and homogenous population is missing. Thus, the purpose of this study is to analyse the differences between the two gait typologies on a relatively large sample. Twenty-four healthy young adults participated in this study. By means of a marker-based optoelectronic system and force platforms, differences between forward and backward walking were outlined in terms of kinematics and kinetics. Statistically, significant differences were observed in most of the spatial-temporal parameters, evidencing some adaptation mechanisms in backward walking. Differently from the ankle joint, the hip and knee range of motion was significantly reduced when switching from forward to backward walking. In terms of kinetics, hip and ankle moment patterns for forward and backward walking were approximately mirrored images of each other. Moreover, joint powers appeared drastically reduced during reversed gait. Specifically, valuable differences in terms of produced and absorbed joint powers between forward and backward walking were pointed out. The outcomes of this study could represent a useful reference data for future investigation evaluating the efficacy of backward walking as a rehabilitation tool for pathological subjects.

Background: The BHOHB system (Bhohb S.r.l., Italy) is a portable non-invasive photographic marker-based device for postural examination., Objective: To assess the test-retest reliability of the BHOHB system and compare its reliability with an optoelectronic system (SMART-DX 700, BTS, Italy)., Methods: Thirty volunteers were instructed to stand upright with five markers on the spinous processes of C7, T6, T12, L3 and S1 vertebrae to define the dorsal kyphosis and lumbar lordosis (sagittal plane) angles. Three markers were placed on the great trochanter, apex of iliac crest and lateral condyle of the femur to detect pelvic tilt. Finally, to define angles between the acromion and the spinous processes (frontal plane), two markers were placed on the right and left acromion. Postural angles were recoded simultaneously with BHOHB and optoelectronic systems during two consecutive recording sessions., Results: The BHOHB system revealed excellent reliability for all the angles (ICCs: 0.92-0.99, SEM: 0.78∘-3.33∘) as well as a shorter processing time compared to the optoelectronic system. Excellent reliability was also found for all the angles detected through the optoelectronic system (ICCs: 0.91-0.99, SEM: 0.84∘-2.80∘)., Conclusion: The BHOHB system resulted as a reliable non-invasive and user-friendly device to monitor spinal posture, especially in subjects requiring repeat examinations.

This study evaluates accelerometer performance of three new state of the art smartphones and focuses on accuracy. The motivating research question was whether accelerator accuracy obtained with these off-the-shelf modern smartphone accelerometers was or was not statistically different from that of a gold-standard reference system. We predicted that the accuracy of the three modern smartphone accelerometers in human movement data acquisition do not differ from that of the Vicon MX motion capture system. To test this prediction, we investigated the comparative performance of three different commercially available current generation smartphone accelerometers among themselves and to a gold-standard Vicon MX motion capture system. A single subject design was implemented for this study. Pearson's correlation coefficients ® were calculated to verify the validity of the smartphones' accelerometer data against that of the Vicon MX motion capture system. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) was used to assess the smartphones' accelerometer performance reliability compared to that of the Vicon MX motion capture system. Results demonstrated that (a) the tested smartphone accelerometers are valid and reliable devices for estimating accelerations and (b) there were not significant differences among the three current generation smartphones and the Vicon MX motion capture system's mean acceleration data. This evidence indicates how well recent generation smartphone accelerometer sensors are capable of measuring human body motion. This study, which bridges a significant information gap between the accuracy of accelerometers measured close to production and their accuracy in actual smartphone research, should be interpreted within the confines of its scope, limitations and strengths. Further research is warranted to validate our arguments, suggestions, and results, since this is the first study on this topic.

The accurate and reliable assessment of gait parameters is assuming an important role, especially in the perspective of designing new therapeutic and rehabilitation strategies for the remote follow-up of people affected by disabling neurological diseases, including Parkinson's disease and post-stroke injuries, in particular considering how gait represents a fundamental motor activity for the autonomy, domestic or otherwise, and the health of neurological patients. To this end, the study presents an easy-to-use and non-invasive solution, based on a single RGB-D sensor, to estimate specific features of gait patterns on a reduced walking path compatible with the available spaces in domestic settings. Traditional spatio-temporal parameters and features linked to dynamic instability during walking are estimated on a cohort of ten parkinsonian and eleven post-stroke subjects using a custom-written software that works on the result of a body-tracking algorithm. Then, they are compared with the "gold standard" 3D instrumented gait analysis system. The statistical analysis confirms no statistical difference between the two systems. Data also indicate that the RGB-D system is able to estimate features of gait patterns in pathological individuals and differences between them in line with other studies. Although they are preliminary, the results suggest that this solution could be clinically helpful in evolutionary disease monitoring, especially in domestic and unsupervised environments where traditional gait analysis is not usable.

Background: Optoelectronic systems and force platforms represent the gold standard for postural sway assessment, but pose disadvantages in terms of equipment, cost and preparation time., Objective: Wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) have been proposed to overcome these issues, but have never been compared to an optoelectronic system. The study aim was therefore to investigate agreement between inertial measurement unit and optoelectronic system in postural sway assessment., Methods: Thirty healthy volunteers performed four balance tasks. IMU was placed on the sacrum (S2) with a retroreflective marker over the sensor and subjects' performance was simultaneously recorded by both systems. Total (TOT), anterior-posterior (AP) and medial-lateral (ML) length of trace, range, speed, root mean squared (RMS), and confidence ellipse were computed., Results: ICCs revealed excellent correlations for Length-TOT, Length-AP and Speed-AP, good correlation for Length-ML, Speed-ML, Confidence Ellipse, Range-AP and RMS-AP, and moderate correlation for range-ML and RMS-ML. Bland-Altman plot showed greater estimation for Length-TOT, Length-AP, Speed-AP, confidence ellipse and RMS-AP using optoelectronic system, and for Length-ML, Range-AP, Range-ML, Speed-ML, RMS-ML using IMU. Both systems revealed the same differences among tasks., Conclusion: The excellent to good agreement of IMU for length of trace and speed parameters and its user-friendly application suggest its potential implementations in clinical practice.

Background: The variation of the anterolateral ligament (ALL) length during knee motion is still unclear, and the knee position in which a reconstruction graft should be tensioned remains controversial. The objective of this study was to determine the variation of the ALL length during knee motion using a three-dimensional optoelectronic system., Methods: Kinematic analyses of 20 cadaveric knees were performed using a Motion Analysis® system. The variability of the measurements made during the five acquisition cycles was studied. Reliability was evaluated by two separate measurement sessions, with complete system reinstallation, using different cadavers and a new operator. The ALL length was analysed from extension to full flexion in three rotational conditions., Findings: When analysing the reliability of the five cycles, 82% of the measurements we found to have an Intra Class Correlation (ICC) >0.85. The reproducibility of inter-sessional measures by different operators and different cadavers was either good (ICC >0.75) or excellent (ICC >0.85). The ALL length was maximum in full internal rotation with the knee at 25° of flexion., Interpretation: This three-dimensional optoelectronic protocol allowed us to analyse the variation of the ALL length during intact knee motion with good reliability and the required accuracy to analyse this variable. The maximal length and highest tension of the ALL was reported at 25° of knee flexion in internal rotation, suggesting this as the optimal position for the knee joint when tensioning an ALL reconstruction., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Background and Purpose: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a structural, lateral curvature with rotation of the spine that develops around puberty. The influence of this spinal deformity on three-dimensional trunk movements during gait has not yet been elucidated. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of spinal curve pattern (single thoracic curve vs. single lumbar curve) on trunk kinematics during gait., Methods: Twenty-two patients with a single thoracic curve (Lenke type 1) and 17 patients with a single lumbar curve (Lenke type 5) were included in this study. Trunk symmetry in the sagittal, coronal, and transverse planes during gait was evaluated using an optoelectronic motion capture system., Results: In the type 1 group, the trunk was significantly rotated towards the concave side in the transverse plane during gait (mean difference of transverse rotation angle between concave side load and the convex side load, 8.8±0.6°, p<0.01). In the type 5 group, the trunk was significantly rotated towards the convex side in the coronal plane throughout the stance phase of gait (mean difference of coronal inclination angle, 1.9±0.3°, p<0.05)., Conclusions: The AIS patients with a single thoracic curve showed asymmetrical trunk movement in the transverse plane, and patients with a single lumbar curve showed asymmetrical trunk movement in the coronal plane. These results indicate that the spinal curve pattern influenced trunk kinematics, and suggest that the global postural control strategy of patients with AIS differs according to the curve pattern., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Objective: To evaluate morphological differences of the facial soft tissue surface between male Japanese adults and children., Design: 20 adult Japanese males (average age 28 years) and 20 Japanese boys (average age 5.5 years) with normal occlusion were selected for this study. The images of the subjects' facial surface were obtained with a 3-D laser scanner. To evaluate the three-dimensional morphological differences of the facial soft tissue, we transformed the coordinates of 16 facial landmarks to a new reference plane and compared the adults' and children's facial form drawn to the same scale in the same coordinate system., Results: The morphological difference ratio of the lower facial area was higher than in the upper facial area, and the nose and lower face changed more forward than downward. The morphological difference ratio of the mid face width was smaller than other areas., Conclusion: Our study suggests that the morphological facial soft tissue differences between Japanese adults and children are more forward and downward than laterally, manifesting in a facial form of adults that is deeper and narrow., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Clinical practice for the evaluation of motor and cognitive capabilities often relies upon writing and drawing tests. A non-invasive method to capture handwriting and analyze data is therefore needed. In this work a method to capture motion of a pen through a mo-cap optoelectronic system was developed, which could solve the limits of systems based on graphic tablets. Four IR passive markers were placed on a pen cap. Once a pen was equipped with the cap, track of tip was computed through a numeric algorithm using the 3D coordinates of markers provided by the optoelectronic system. Some tests were performed to estimate the error in track reconstruction and to compare the new protocol with previous reconstruction methods. The results showed a higher accuracy of the new method. The new protocol also overcomes the problems related to pen grasping and marker covering that affected other methods described in the literature and permits the evaluation of writing and drawing kinematics as well as postural behaviour related to them., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd.
