Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) constitutes around 10% of global cancer diagnoses and death due to cancer. Treatment involves the surgical resection of the tumor and regional lymph nodes. Assessment of multiple lymph node demands meticulous examination by skilled pathologists, which can be arduous, prompting consideration for an artificial intelligence (AI)-supported workflow due to the growing number of slides to be examined, demanding heightened precision and the global shortage of pathologists., Method: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study including digital images of glass slides containing sections of positive and negative lymph nodes obtained from radical resection of primary CRC. Lymph nodes from 165 previously diagnosed cases were selected from Agha Khan University Hospital, from Jan 2021 to Jan 2022. The images were prepared at 10X and uploaded into an open source software, Q path and deep learning model Ensemble was applied for the identification of tumor deposits in lymph node., Results: Out of the 87 positive lymph nodes detected by AI, 73(84%) were true positive and 14(16%) were false positive. The total number of negative lymph nodes detected by AI was 78. Out of these, 69(88.5%) were true negative and 9 (11.5%) were false negative. The sensitivity was 89% and specificity 83.1%. The odds ratio was 40 with a confidence interval of 16.26-98.3. P-value was < 0.05 (< 0.0001)., Conclusion: Though it was a small study but its results were really appreciating and we encourage more such studies with big sample data in future., (© 2024. Background: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) represent a diverse group of neoplasms that arise from neuroendocrine cells, with Ki-67 immunostaining serving as a crucial biomarker for assessing tumor proliferation and prognosis. Accurate and reliable quantification of Ki-67 labeling index is essential for effective clinical management., Methods: We aimed to evaluate the performance of open-source/open-access deep learning cloud-native platform, DeepLIIF (https://deepliif.org), for the quantification of Ki-67 expression in gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors and compare it with the manual quantification method., Results: Our results demonstrate that the DeepLIIF quantification of Ki-67 in NETs achieves a high degree of accuracy with an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) = 0.885 with 95% CI (0.848-0.916) which indicates good reliability when compared to manual assessments by experienced pathologists. DeepLIIF exhibits excellent intra- and inter-observer agreement and ensures consistency in Ki-67 scoring. Additionally, DeepLIIF significantly reduces analysis time, making it a valuable tool for high-throughput clinical settings., Conclusion: This study showcases the potential of open-source/open-access user-friendly deep learning platforms, such as DeepLIIF, for the quantification of Ki-67 in neuroendocrine tumors. The analytical validation presented here establishes the reliability and robustness of this innovative method, paving the way for its integration into routine clinical practice. Background: Myoepithelial neoplasms, although sometimes encountered in soft tissues are described very rarely in mediastinum and lung. We reported a rare case of such a tumor which was very large in size and not connected to respiratory tree., Case Presentation: A 24 year old male presented with blunt chest pain and respiratory distress. A CT scan was performed which showed large heterogeneously enhancing soft tissue mass occupying the left hemithorax. It measures 18.5 X 15.8 X 7.6. Thoracotomy with excision of the tumor was done. Operative findings include multilobulated and nodular large glistening white tumor located in anterior mediastinum adherent to parietal pleura and effacing the pulmonary parenchyma. However tumor was not connected or seems to originate from trachea or lung. Microscopic sections show neoplastic lesion composed of nests, cords and trabeculae of small to medium sized cells with round nuclei and clear cytoplasm. Background showed myxoid appearance with areas of cartilaginous differentiation. Immunohistochemical expression of CKAE1/AE3, p63, ASMA, S100 and GFAP favored the diagnosis of benign myoepithelioma., Conclusion: Myoepithelial tumors are rare soft tissue tumors thought to arise from stem cells capable of divergent differentiation and occur anywhere in the body. Histopathologic recognition of these tumors is essential as these tumors may behave in a benign fashion despite large sizes.

Background: Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a cytodiagnostic method based on morphologic findings of individual and small group of cells aspirated using a fine needle. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the spectrum of salivary gland lesions in our setting and to assess the diagnostic accuracy of FNAC for salivary gland lesions., Methods: The study involved 187 cases of parotid and submandibular swellings of patients who underwent FNAC at our institution. Thirty one (31) patients with a FNAC diagnosis of neoplastic lesion subsequently underwent excision biopsies. The results of FNAC and final histology were compared and accuracy of FNAC was determined., Results: Mean age of patients was 42 (± 21) years and male to female ratio was 1:1. Chronic sialadenitis was the most common non-neoplastic lesion (33.8%) followed by acute and chronic sialadenitis (29.7%) and chronic granulomatous inflammation (27.0%). Pleomorphic adenoma was the most common benign neoplasm and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was the most common malignant lesion (38.9%) followed by acinic cell (27.8%) and adenoid cystic carcinoma (16.7%). Total 31 patients subsequently underwent surgical excision, out of which 21 were benign and 9 were malignant, 20 cases (64.5%) were of pleomorphic adenoma, 3 cases (9.6%) of acinic cell carcinoma, 2 cases (6.4%) each of warthin tumor, adenoid cystic carcinoma and non-hodgkin lymphoma and 1 case (3.2%) each of mucoepidermoid carcinoma and mucinous adenocarcinoma. The overall accuracy of FNAC in our study was found to be 83.8% with 77.7% sensitivity and 86.3%, specificity. The revised sensitivity and specificity after adjusting verification bias were 68.5% and 91% respectively. False negative diagnosis was rendered in mucoepidermoid carcinoma and acinic cell carcinoma whereas false positive diagnosis was given in cases of pleomorphic adenoma., Conclusion: We found a good concordance between FNAC and histology, however pleomorphic adenoma may impart a diagnostic challenge when inadequately aspirated and therefore we advice either immunohistochemical studies (if cell block material is available) or repeat aspiration in difficult cases.

Background: To evaluate pathological features of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and to compare these pathological features in patients younger and older than 40 years., Materials and Methods: All resection specimens of HNSCC between 2010 and 2013 evaluated. Tumor characteristics - grade, location (site) cervical node status, alongwith presence or absence of extranodal extension, lymphovascular invasion, gender and age - were extracted from surgical pathology reports., Results: Among these n=19 patients (21.8%) were 40 years or younger and n=68 patients (78.2%) were above 40 years of age. The mean age was 34 (20-40 years) in the younger group and 56 (42-86) in the older group. The most common location of HNSCC in both groups was the oral cavity. The analysis of histopathological features including grade of tumor, tumor size, extranodal extension and comparison between two groups do not show any significant difference., Conclusions: There are no specific pathological characteristics of HNSCC in young patients. An interesting observation is that exposure to expected risk factors is similar in both groups, in younger patients they have less time to act and yet tumors are the same in terms of tumor size, lymph node status and lymphovascular invasion. Therefore further research is recommended to look for potentiating factors.

Molecular breast cancer subtypes were defined by gene expression prolife; however, immunohistochemical (IHC) expression can categorize breast cancers analogous to gene expression profiling. We aimed to evaluate distribution of these molecular breast cancer subtypes in our population and their association with clinocopathologic parameters. We retrospectively analyzed 1,104 cases of primary breast cancers over 3 years duration. ER, PR, Her2neu IHC staining, and subsequent fluorescent in situ hybridization studies (Her2neu gene amplification in cases with 2+ IHC staining) were performed to categorize breast cancer subtypes. Luminal A breast cancers were most frequent (45.8%) followed by triple negative (18.6%), luminal B (17.8%) and Her2neu (17.8%) subtypes. We found a strong association of breast cancer subtypes with tumor grade and Ki67 proliferation index with triple negative cancers being associated with higher grade and proliferation index. Significant association was seen with age groups, luminal A subtype occurring at a slightly older age, whereas triple negative and Her2neu cancers were more frequent in younger age group. We found a higher proportion of triple negative cancers in our set up, and they were found to have high-tumor grade and proliferation index along with presentation at younger age. As these cancers are associated with BRCA 1 mutations and abnormal BRCA 1 pathways, we suggest that large scale studies should be done to evaluate BRCA 1 mutations and abnormal BRCA 1 pathways in our population to establish risk factors for this highly aggressive tumor subtype., (© 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Introduction: Thyroid swelling is common problem among South Asian women. Although benign nodules far outnumber cancerous lesions, the risk of malignancy needs to be evaluated preoperatively for which fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is widely used. Bethesda system for reporting thyroid cytopathology (BSRTC) was introduced to streamline the reporting of thyroid aspirates. We aimed to evaluate the disease spectrum of thyroid cytopathology and correlation of BSRTC with final histopathology in our setup., Methods: The study was conducted at Histopathology department of Liaquat National Hospital, Karachi, involving 528 patients with thyroid swelling who underwent FNAC. Out of these 528 cases, 61 patients subsequently underwent surgical excision. Results of final histopathology were correlated with cytologic diagnosis., Results: Mean age of the patients included in the study was 39.7 ± 13(14-84) and male to female ratio was 1:3.6. Out of total 528 cases, 403 cases were diagnosed as benign (Bethesda 2) and 67 were Bethesda 3 (follicular lesion of undetermined significance, FLUS) while 22 cases were categorized as either malignant or suspicious for malignancy (Bethesda 6 and 5). Histopathologic correlation was done in 61 cases. For Bethesda 5 and 6 categories, 100% concordance was found, however for Bethesda 2 category, 5 out of 45 cases were found to have malignant diagnosis on final histopathology. The incidence of malignancy in Bethesda categories 2 through 4 were 11.1%, 33.4%, 25%, 100% and 100% respectively. Overall accuracy of FNA cytology was 80.3% with 64.3% sensitivity and 85.1% specificity., Conclusion: Our study validated the accuracy of BSRTC in our setup. Therefore we recommend routine use of BSRTC for reporting thyroid cytopathology for initial workup of patients with thyroid nodule. However, risk of malignancy was found to be significantly high in Bethesda 3 category to warrant further workup including ultrasound/thyroid scan in addition to repeat FNAC.

Background: Glial tumors are most common brain tumors in our population. While the exact etiology and pathogenesis is unknown, the evaluation of current trends in the frequency and morphology of glial tumors is imperative to constitute better diagnostic and treatment protocols. Data pertaining to frequency and spectrum of glial tumors is scarcely available in our population. The aim of this study was to determine the morphologic spectrum of glial tumors prevalent in our population., Method: 126 cases of glial tumors were retrospectively analyzed over a period of 5 years. Patients from all age groups and both genders were included in this study. Glial tumors were classified and graded according to WHO classification., Results: Glial tumors were more common in males with a sex ratio of 2:1 and mean age of 38.26 years. Astrocytomas were most common glial tumors (51.6%) followed by oligodendrogliomas (23%). Glioblastoma was the most frequent astrocytic tumor and was incomparably frequent in older age group., Conclusion: In our study, Oligodendrogliomas and mixed oligoastrocytomas represent major pattern of disease in comparison with available regional data. Knowledge of these changing trends and patterns of glial tumor morphology and frequency can help in improvements and applications of newly emerging diagnostic and treatment modalities.

Background: Young age breast cancers are quite prevalent in our setup, a significant number of which exhibit triple negative phenotype. These cancers behave in an aggressive fashion and unresponsive to targeted adjuvant therapy. We aimed to evaluate clinical and histopathologic features of triple negative cancers in our population., Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 1104 cases of primary breast cancers. Immunohistochemical studies for ER, PR and Her2neu followed by Her2neu gene amplification by FISH testing were done to identify 205 (18.6%) cases of triple negative breast cancers., Results: Mean age for triple negative breast cancer patients was 48.4 years (±12.3) and 60% of patients were diagnosed at less than 50 years of age. Although ductal carcinoma was the most frequent histologic type, a meaningful number of cases exhibited metaplastic and medullary like features (10.7% and 5.9% respectively). Similarly geographic necrosis involving more than 40% of tumor and extensive lymphocytic infiltration was a considerable finding. Mean Ki67 index was 45.2% (±25.2) and as a reflection of tumor grade, a significantly higher proportion of cases (66.3%) were under high risk Ki67 category (>30%)., Conclusion: Triple negative breast cancers typify high grade breast cancers with a higher frequency of atypical medullary and metaplastic histologies. Their prevailing occurrence at a younger age raises question of under lying BRCA mutations in our population. Background: Non-hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a diverse group of disease encompassing divergent tumor types with contrasting clinical behaviors. We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of Ki67 index in segregating indolent from aggressive NHL and its association with clinical parameters., Materials and Methods: During a study period of 4.5 years, a total of 215 cases of lymphomas were diagnosed among of which 172 cases were NHL. Ki67 immunohistochemical staining was performed by the DAKO envision method. Average proportion of tumor cells stained was calculated to determine the proliferative index., Results: The mean age at diagnosis was 46.2 years +19.8 (3-81) with a male to female ratio of 1.5:1. Mean Ki67 index for indolent NHL included 23% for small cell, 25% for mantle cell, 28.5% for marginal zone and 34.6% for follicular lymphoma. On the other hand, mean Ki67 index for aggressive lymphomas were 66.4%, 66.9%, 80.3%, 83.3% and 94.4% for diffuse large B cell, T cell (NOS), anaplastic large cell, lymphoblastic and burkitts lymphoma respectively. No significant correlation was found between Ki67 index and other clinical parameters like age and extra nodal involvement., Conclusions: Ki67 index is a valuable IHC marker to distinguish indolent from aggressive lymphomas especially in small needle biopsies where exact typing may not be possible.

Background: Breast cancer is the most frequent malignant disease amongst young women. If we review local data in Pakistan then breast cancer represents approximately a third of all cancers in females. The age standardized incidence rate (ASR) world per 100,000 is 53.8 and crude incidence rate is 30.9. We have observed during our surgical pathology practice and it is also reported by other Asian studies that breast carcinoma is amongst the leading malignancies in the region and the patients are at least a decade younger than counterparts in developed nations. Age is an important issue in effective screening, diagnosis and management of breast cancer, especially in this geographical region where late presentation and poor prognosis are a hallmark of the disease., Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of malignant breast lesions in symptomatic young females presenting with breast lumps., Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study conducted at the Pathology Department, Liaquat National Hospital and Medical College, Karachi. Descriptive and pathology data of malignant breast tumors 1st January 2004 to 31st December 2009 were reviewed, using the departmental archived data. It included both male and female patients up to the age of 25 years., Results: A total of 714 surgical specimens from/of symptomatic breast lesions were received at the pathology department of Liaquat National Medical, in the five years study period, in young females. There were 575 (80%) benign, 119 (16%) inflammatory and 20 (2.8%) malignant lumps., Conclusions: The obtained data for females only up to 25 years of age suggest a massive burden which requires urgent attention. Early assessment of lesions is essential in order to avoid mortality from malignancies.

Introduction: Breast cancer aggressiveness can be correlated with proliferation status of tumor cells, which can be ascertained with tumor grade and Ki67 indexing. However due to lack of reproducibility, the ASCO do not recommend routine use of Ki67 in determining prognosis in newly diagnosed breast cancers. We therefore aimed to determine associations of the Ki67 index with other prognostic markers like tumor size, grade, lymph node metastasis, ER, PR and HER2neu status., Methods: A total of 194 cases of newly diagnosed breast cancer were included in the study. Immunohistochemical staining for ER, PR, HER2neu and Ki67 was performed by the DAKO envision method. Associations of the Ki67 index with other prognostic factors were evaluated both as continuous and categorical variables., Results: Mean age of the patients was 51.7 years (24-90). Mean Ki67 index was 26.9% (1-90). ER, PR, HER2neu positivity was noted in 90/194 cases (46.4%), 74/194 cases (38.1%) and 110/194 cases (56.70%) respectively. Significant association was found between Ki67 and tumor grade, PR, HER2neu positivity and lymph node status, but no link was apparent with ER positivity and tumor size. There wasan inverse relation between Ki67 index and PR positivity, whereas a direct correlation was seen with HER2neu positivity. However, high Ki67 (>30%) was associated with decreased HER2neu positivity as compared to intermediate Ki67 (16-30%). The same trend was established with lymph node metastasis., Conclusion: Our study indicates that with high grade tumors, clinical utility of ki67 is greater in combination with other prognostic markers because we found that tumors with Ki67 higher than 30% have better prognostic profile compared to tumors with intermediate Ki67 level, as reflected by slightly lower frequency of lymph node metastasis and HER2neu expression. Therefore we suggest that Ki67 index should be categorized into high, intermediate and low groups when considering adjuvant chemotherapy and prognostic stratification.

Background: Intraoperative sentinel lymph node biopsy has now become the standard of care for patients with clinically node negative breast cancer for diagnosis and also in order to determine the need for immediate axillary clearance. Several large scale studies confirmed the diagnostic reliability of this method. However, micrometastases are frequently missed on frozen sections. Recent studies showed that both disease free interval and overall survival are significantly affected by the presence of micrometastatic disease. The aim of this study was to determine the sensitivity and specificity of intraoperative frozen section analysis of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) for the detection of breast cancer micrometastasis and to evaluate the status of non-sentinel lymph nodes (non-SLNs) in those patients subjected to further axillary sampling., Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective study on 154 patients who underwent SLN biopsy from January 2008 till October 2011. The SLNs were sectioned at 2 mm intervals and submitted entirely for frozen sections. Three levels of each section submitted are examined and the results were compared with further levels on paraffin sections., Results: Overall 40% of patients (62/154) were found to be SLN positive on final (paraffin section) histology, out of which 44 demonstrated macrometastases (>2mm) and 18 micrometastases (<2mm). The overall sensitivity and specificity of frozen section analysis of SLN for the detection of macrometastasis was found to be 100% while those for micrometastasis were 33.3% and 100%, respectively. Moreover 20% of patients who had micrometastases in SLN had positive non-SLNs on final histology., Conclusions: Frozen section analysis of SLNs lacks sufficient accuracy to rule out micrometastasis by current protocols. Therefore these need to be revised in order to pick up micrometastasis which appears to have clinical significance. We suggest that this can be achieved by examining more step sections of blocks.

Introduction: Breast carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor and the leading cause of cancer death in women. In western countries, a sharp increase in the detection of breast carcinoma, largely due to widespread use of mammography, has recently led to a fall in breast cancer mortality. This, however, is not true for less developed countries, in which mortality continues to rise., Objective: The aim of this study was to acquire information about the extent and spread of breast carcinoma in our patients by grading the tumors, determining the tumor size, and axillary lymph node status, staging of the tumors and Nottingham Prognostic Index (NPI) scoring on the available material., Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty consecutive mastectomy specimens with axillary lymph node sampling removed for breast carcinoma and received in the section of histopathology, Aga Khan University, in the year 2005, were included in the study. Standard protocols were used for the processing of the specimens, and reporting was done using a standard format incorporating all relevant tumor parameters. NPI was applied to the cases., Results: Out of the 120 cases, 5 (4.17) were grade 1, 91 (75.83) were grade 2, and 24 (20%) were grade 3. Also, 9 cases (7.5%) were T1 (4 were T1b, and 5 were T1c); 53 (44.16%) were T2; 50 (41.66%) were T3; and 8 (6.66%) were T4. Axillary lymph nodes were available in 107 cases. In 13 cases, no lymph nodes were recovered. Out of 107 cases 27 (25.23%) lymph nodes were negative for metastases pN0; 29 (27.10%) cases were pN1; 26 (24.30) were pN2; and 25 cases (23.36%) were pN3. Extranodal spread was present in 56 (70%) out of the 80 cases in which lymph nodes were positive. The average microscopic size of nodal metastasis was 1.7 cms. Significant statistical association was found between the number of positive nodes and perinodal extension (P = 0.001). Tumor necrosis was present in 76 out of 120 cases (63.33%). Vascular invasion was present in 43 out of 120 cases (35.83%). NPI scores were greater than 5.4 in 60 out of 107 cases (56.1%) indicating poor prognosis., Conclusion: The large majority of the cases were grade 2 tumors. Most cases (all grades) were T2 or T3, and were axillary lymph node positive. Large majority of cases with nodel metastases showed extra nodal spread. The majority of patients had NPI scores greater than 5.4 indicating poor prognosis. Significant statistical association was found between the number of positive nodes and perinodal extension (P = 0.001). The findings show extensive and advanced disease trends in our patients.

Background: For every practicing histopathologist, improvement of diagnostic accuracy is an important objective. Personal consults are an important component of quality control (QC)/quality assurance (QA) in our Section of Histopathology. In addition, the College of American Pathologists recommends a daily in-house consensus conference, which is a prospective system by which all difficult and problematic cases are reviewed and discussed and signed out by consensus., Design: In-house consensus conference is held daily using a multi-headed microscope. This collegial session is run by the seniormost consultant in the section and is attended by all histopathology consultants and residents. The consultants and residents present cases of their choice for discussion. The cases may be selected due to diagnostic difficulty, unusual nature of a case, management purposes such as performance of additional biopsies, special studies, etc., or request on the part of clinician or patient. Cases may be shown once or, in case of lack of consensus or difficulty in diagnosis, more than once after additional work-up suggested by the conference., Results: In a 4-month period, 774 (4.1%) cases of a total of over 14,000 well-mixed surgical cases were brought to the in-house daily consultation conference. Four hundred ninety-three cases (63.7%) were conclusively decided the first time while 198 cases (25.5%) were decided by consensus after being shown twice. In 83 cases (10.7%), a definite diagnosis could not be given. The cases on which a definite diagnosis was not possible represents 0.59% of all cases received in the department during the study period. The most common cases were shown from the gastrointestinal tract (115 cases or 14.8%), lymph nodes (110 cases or 14.2%) and soft tissue (82 cases or 10.6%). In most cases in which a definite diagnosis could not be given, the main reason was scanty material or crushed nature of the tissue., Conclusion: The in-house daily consensus conference is an extremely useful QC/QA exercise, which is very important in reaching an accurate diagnosis in difficult and challenging cases and minimizing diagnostic errors.

Yolk sac tumour is a common malignant germ cell tumour, which usually occurs in the testes or ovaries of infants. It can occasionally arise from a number of extragonadal sites. Extragonadal germ cell tumours of the head and neck region account for 5% of all benign and malignant germ cell tumours. The orbit is an extremely unusual location for development of primary yolk sac tumour. The present report concerns the case of a yolk sac tumour in a 14-year-old girl, arising as a primary tumour of the orbit with invasion of periorbital and intracranial spaces.

Background: Nodular hidradenoma is a distinctive sweat gland neoplasm. In addition to the well-known histological and cytological features, we hereby describe for the first time nuclear grooving as a useful morphological feature to aid in its diagnosis., Methods: All cases were analyzed for anatomic location, size, age, sex and histology, with attention focused mainly on the nuclear features. A semiquantitative method was used to estimate the percentage of nuclear grooves in five consecutive high-power fields (x40), with confirmation on x100. Electron microscopy was also performed to confirm light microscopic observation., Results: Totally, 34 cases of nodular hidradenoma were studied. All the tumors showed two types of cells. One type of cell contained clear cytoplasm with small, round nuclei. The second type of cell, which was the predominant type, had elongated nuclei. In 30 (88%) of the 34 cases, about 30% of these cells at x40 and x100 magnification showed nuclear grooving. Electron microscopy on these samples confirmed nuclear grooves., Conclusions: In this study, we reviewed 34 cases of nodular hidradenoma. In addition to the classical features, both histologically and cytologically, we describe for the first time the nuclear grooves as a frequent finding in these neoplasms. This finding was also confirmed by electron microscopy. We believe that this newly described histological feature will aid the practicing pathologist to make this important diagnosis.

The objective of this study was to determine the frequency of phylloides tumor (PT) in adolescent girls and young women (less than and equal to 25 years of age) and to define the clinico-pathological features of PT in this unusual clinical setting. This descriptive study was carried out at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) pathology department. All consecutive cases of PT diagnosed during the last sixteen years in the section of histopathology from 1st January 1990 to 31st June 2005 were included. Selection of cases was restricted to patients up to 25 years of age. A total of 42 cases of PT in up to 25 years of age were diagnosed. This comprised 11% of the total PT cases (total n=363). The number of benign (BPT), borderline (BLPT) and malignant (MPT) was identical i.e. 14 (33.3%) each. Clinically all cases presented with a solid, mobile, palpable mass. The mean age was 19.1 years (95% CI, 16.7-21.6), 21.9 years (95% CI, 20.7-21.9) and 19.7 years (95% CI, 17.2-22.3) in BPT, BLPT and MPT respectively. In majority of cases the surgical procedure performed was lumpectomy (50% of BPT, 78% of BLPT and 64% of MPT). High grade PT (BLPT and MPT) is an uncommon mammary tumor in adolescent girls and young women but seems to be occurring with increased frequency in the study population. This observation may indicate the biological behavior of PT in a high risk population, though chances of referral bias are also present. In view of the rarity of the disease, larger population studies are suggested to confirm our findings.
