Objectives: Fluoroscopy has significantly improved lead placement and decreased surgical time for implantable sacral neuromodulation (SNM). There is a paucity of data regarding radiation and safety of fluoroscopy during SNM procedures. Our study aims to characterize fluoroscopy time and dose used during SNM surgery across multiple institutions and assess for predictors of increased fluoroscopy time and radiation dose., Methods: Electronic medical records were queried for SNM procedures (Stage 1 and full implant) from 2016 to 2021 at four academic institutions. Demographic, clinical, and intraoperative data were collected, including fluoroscopy time and radiation dose in milligray (mGy). The data were entered into a centralized REDCap database. Univariate and multivariate analysis were performed to assess for predictive factors using STATA/BE 17.0., Results: A total of 664 procedures were performed across four institutions. Of these, 363 (54.6%) procedures had complete fluoroscopy details recorded. Mean surgical time was 58.8 min. Of all procedures, 79.6% were performed by Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery specialists. There was significant variability in fluoroscopy time and dose based on surgical specialty and institution. Most surgeons (76.4%) were considered "low volume" implanters. In a multivariate analysis, bilateral finder needle testing, surgical indication, surgeon volume, and institution significantly predicted increased fluoroscopy time and radiation dose (p < 0.05)., Conclusions: There is significant variability in fluoroscopy time and radiation dose utilized during SNM procedures, with differences across institutions, surgeons, and subspecialties. Increased radiation exposure can have harmful impacts on the surgical team and patient. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effect of ethanol extract of Annona Muricata (AM) leaves in the prevention of brain damage caused by ionizing radiation (IR). This study was conducted in the Experimental Animal Research Unit of a university with 28 adults female Wistar Albino rats. The experimental groups were as follows: Control group (n = 8), AM group (n = 6), IR group (n = 8), AM + IR group (n = 6). In the IR group, astrocyte hypertrophy, microglial reaction and inflammatory reaction levels were significantly higher than the control and AM groups ( P  < 0.001). Edema was significantly higher in the IR group compared to the control group ( P= 0.001). The MDA of the IR group was significantly higher compared to the control group and AM group ( P= 0.031, P= 0.006, respectively). The MDA of the AM + IR group was significantly higher than the AM group ( P= 0.039). Introduction: Cranial CT scans are associated with radiation exposure to the eye lens, which is a particularly radiosensitive organ. Children are more vulnerable to radiation than adults. Therefore, it is essential to use the available dose reduction techniques to minimize radiation exposure. According to the European Consensus on patient contact shielding by the IRCP from 2021, shielding is not recommended in most body areas anymore. This study aims to evaluate whether bismuth shielding as well as its combination with other dose-saving technologies could still be useful. Methods: Cranial CT scans of a pediatric anthropomorphic phantom were performed on two up-to-date MDCT scanners. Eye lens dose measurements were performed using thermoluminescent dosimeters. Furthermore, the impact of BS and of the additional placement of standoff foam between the patient and BS on image quality was also assessed. Results: Bismuth shielding showed a significant lens dose reduction in both CT scanners (GE: 41.50 ± 4.04%, p < 0.001; Siemens: 29.75 ± 6.55%, p = 0.00). When combined with AEC, the dose was lowered even more (GE: 60.75 ± 3.30%, p < 0.001; Siemens: 41.25 ± 8.02%, p = 0.00). The highest eye dose reduction was achieved using BS + AEC + OBTCM (GE: 71.25 ± 2.98%, p < 0.001; Siemens: 58.75 ± 5.85%, p < 0.001). BS caused increased image noise in the orbital region, which could be mitigated by foam placement. Eye shielding had no effect on the image noise in the cranium. Conclusions: The use of BS in cranial CT can lead to a significant dose reduction, which can be further enhanced by its combination with other modern dose reduction methods. BS causes increase in image noise in the orbital region but not in the cranium. The additional use of standoff foam reduces image noise in the orbital region.

Hybrid positron emission tomography (PET)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is highly suited for abdominal pathologies. A precise co-registration of anatomic and metabolic data is possible thanks to the simultaneous acquisition, leading to accurate imaging. The literature shows that PET/MRI is at least as good as PET/CT and even superior for some indications, such as primary hepatic tumors, distant metastasis evaluation, and inflammatory bowel disease. The purpose of this study is to show the actual recommendations for dose management and provide an overview of the available options for dose tracking and dose optimization. The legal institutions that supervise the radiological exposure of patients and their most important directives are presented. A literature review of existing diagnostic reference levels for computed tomography (CT), interventional radiology, radiography, paediatric radiography, mammography, and fluoroscopy in Europe and Poland was carried out. It has been shown that, in Poland, it is necessary to verify and determine the new diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) for each imaging modality because the existing ones are adapted from other countries and are not determined on the basis of data from Polish hospitals. They have not been updated for 11-17 years, although it is recommended to update them every 3-5 years. Many countries in Europe have already determined DRLs based on the analysis of their own dosage data (e.g. Austria and Germany). Analysing the existing DRLs for CT in Poland, it was noticed that they concern only a single anatomical region. This systematic review aimed to answer the research focused question: What are the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy on bone healing after ionizing irradiation in animal models? The EMBASE, LILACS, LIVIVO, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, including gray literature, were searched using the following keywords: "Head and Neck Neoplasms"; "Ionizing Radiation"; "Low-Level Light Therapy"; and "Bone regeneration", focusing on the primary studies that assessed the effects of PBM therapy on animal models of irradiated bone. Six studies have met the eligibility criteria and presented an overall regular quality according to the risk of bias assessment tools. All the studies utilized rat animal model and near-infrared laser PBM at low power output setting. Most of the studies showed increased new bone formation, osteocytes, osteoblasts, and vascularization networking, as a result of PBM therapy. However, only one out of the six studies has not shown any differences in bone healing in both lased and non-lased animal groups. Nevertheless, PBM therapy is a potential tool to improve bone healing induced by ionizing radiation. However, due to the scarce number of studies and the great variability of laser parameters and treatment protocols, a clear conclusion cannot be drawn. A vast disparity exists between science and practice for CT radiation dose. Despite high-level evidence supporting the use of low-dose CT (LDCT) in diagnosing appendicitis, a recent survey showed that many care providers were still concerned that the low image quality of LDCT may lead to incorrect diagnoses. For successful implementation of LDCT practice, it is important to inform and educate the care providers not only of the scientific discoveries but also of concrete guidelines on how to overcome more practical matters. Here, we discuss CT imaging techniques and other practical issues for implementing LDCT practice.

Background: Radiation-induced hematopoietic suppression and myelotoxicity can occur due to the nuclear accidents, occupational irradiation and therapeutic interventions. Bone marrow dysfunction has always been one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality after ionizing irradiation., Objective: This study aims to investigate the protective effect of telmisartan against radiation-induced bone marrow injuries in a Balb/c mouse model., Material and Methods: In this experimental study, male Balb/c mice were divided into four groups as follow: group 1: mice received phosphate buffered saline (PBS) without irradiation, group 2: mice received a solution of telmisartan in PBS without irradiation, group 3: mice received PBS with irradiation, and group 4: mice received a solution of telmisartan in PBS with irradiation. A solution of telmisartan was prepared and administered orally at 12 mg/kg body weight for seven consecutive days prior to whole body exposing to a single sub-lethal dose of 5 Gy X-rays. Protection of bone marrow against radiation induced damage was investigated by Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining assay at 3, 9, 15 and 30 days after irradiation., Results: Histopathological analysis indicated that administration of telmisartan reduced X-radiation-induced damage and improved bone marrow histology. Background: Exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation is among the few well-established brain tumour risk factors. We used data from the Interphone study to evaluate the effects of exposure to low-dose radiation from diagnostic radiological examinations on glioma, meningioma and acoustic neuroma risk., Methods: Brain tumour cases (2644 gliomas, 2236 meningiomas, 1083 neuromas) diagnosed in 2000-02 were identified through hospitals in 13 countries, and 6068 controls (population-based controls in most centres) were included in the analysis. Participation across all centres was 64% for glioma cases, 78% for meningioma cases, 82% for acoustic neuroma cases and 53% for controls. Information on previous diagnostic radiological examinations was obtained by interviews, including the frequency, timing and indication for the examinations. Typical brain doses per type of examination were estimated based on the literature. Examinations within the 5 years before the index date were excluded from the dose estimation. Adjusted odds ratios were estimated using conditional logistic regression., Results: No materially or consistently increased odds ratios for glioma, meningioma or acoustic neuroma were found for any specific type of examination, including computed tomography of the head and cerebral angiography. The only indication of an elevated risk was an increasing trend in risk of meningioma with the number of isotope scans, but no such trends for other examinations were observed. No gradient was found in risk with estimated brain dose. Age at exposure did not substantially modify the findings. Sensitivity analyses gave results consistent with the main analysis., Conclusions: There was no consistent evidence for increased risks of brain tumours with X-ray examinations, although error from selection and recall bias cannot be completely excluded. C-arm fluoroscopy is a useful tool for interventional pain management. However, with the increasing use of C-arm fluoroscopy, the risk of accumulated radiation exposure is a significant concern for pain physicians. Therefore, efforts are needed to reduce radiation exposure. There are three types of radiation exposure sources: (1) the primary X-ray beam, (2) scattered radiation, and (3) leakage from the X-ray tube. The major radiation exposure risk for most medical staff members is scattered radiation, the amount of which is affected by many factors. Pain physicians can reduce their radiation exposure by use of several effective methods, which utilize the following main principles: reducing the exposure time, increasing the distance from the radiation source, and radiation shielding. Some methods reduce not only the pain physician's but also the patient's radiation exposure. Taking images with collimation and minimal use of magnification are ways to reduce the intensity of the primary X-ray beam and the amount of scattered radiation. It is also important to carefully select the C-arm fluoroscopy mode, such as pulsed mode or low-dose mode, for ensuring the physician's and patient's radiation safety. Pain physicians should practice these principles and also be aware of the annual permissible radiation dose as well as checking their radiation exposure. This article aimed to review the literature on radiation safety in relation to C-arm fluoroscopy and provide recommendations to pain physicians during C-arm fluoroscopy-guided interventional pain management.

Objectives: Radon is carcinogenic, but more studies are needed to understand relationships with lung cancer and extrathoracic cancers at low exposures. There are few studies evaluating associations with cancer incidence or assessing the modifying effects of smoking., Methods: We conducted a case-cohort study with 16 434 underground uranium miners in the Czech Republic with cancer incidence follow-up 1977-1996. Associations between radon exposure and lung cancer, and extrathoracic cancer, were estimated with linear excess relative rate (ERR) models. We examined potential modifying effects of smoking, time since exposure and exposure rate., Results: Under a simple ERR model, assuming a 5-year exposure lag, the estimated ERR of lung cancer per 100 working level months (WLM) was 0.54 (95% CI 0.33 to 0.83) and the estimated ERR of extrathoracic cancer per 100 WLM was 0.07 (95% CI -0.17 to 0.72). Most lung cancer cases were observed among smokers (82%), and the estimated ERR of lung cancer per 100 WLM was larger among smokers (ERR/100 WLM=1.35; 95% CI 0.84 to 2.15) than among never smokers (ERR/100 WLM=0.12; 95% CI -0.05 to 0.49). Among smokers, the estimated ERR of lung cancer per 100 WLM decreased with time since exposure from 3.07 (95% CI -0.04 to 10.32) in the period 5-14 years after exposure to 1.05 (95% CI 0.49 to 1.87) in the period 25+ years after exposure., Conclusions: We observed positive associations between cumulative radon exposure and lung cancer, consistent with prior studies. We observed a positive association between cumulative radon exposure and extrathoracic cancers, although the estimates were small. Objectives: We investigated the association between protracted low-dose ionising radiation and the risk of cancer in medical radiation workers, the largest group of workers with occupational radiation exposures., Methods: Data of all South Korean diagnostic medical radiation workers enrolled at the National Dose Registry during 1996-2011 were merged with the death and cancer incidence data until 31 December 2017. SIRs, relative risks and excess relative risks (ERRs) for cancer were calculated to quantify the radiation dose-response relationship using Poisson regression models., Results: A total of 3392 first primary cancer cases were identified among 93 920 diagnostic medical radiation workers. The mean cumulative badge dose in the cohort was 7.20 mSv. The ERRs for solid cancer with a 5-year lag and haematopoietic cancers with a 2-year lag for all workers were 0.15 per 100 mGy (95% CI -0.20 to 0.51) and 0.09 per 100 mGy (95% CI -2.02 to 2.20), respectively. The ERRs for cancers did not significantly vary by job title, different lag years or after excluding thyroid and lung cancers. Sensitivity analyses restricted to workers employed for at least 1 year, or who were employed in or after 1996, or who had exposure to a cumulative badge dose of 1 mSv or more showed similar results., Conclusions: Occupational radiation doses were not significantly associated with cancer incidence among South Korean diagnostic medical radiation workers. Background: Estimation of eye lens dose is important in head computed tomography (CT) examination since the eye lens is a sensitive organ to ionizing radiation., Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare estimations of eye lens dose in head CT examinations using local size-specific dose estimate (SSDE) based on size-conversion factors of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Report No. 293 with those based on size-conversion factors of the AAPM Report No. 220., Material and Methods: This experimental study is conducted on a group of patients who had undergone nasopharyngeal CT examination. Due to the longitudinal ( z -axis) dose fluctuation, the average global SSDE and average local SSDE (i.e. particular slices where the eyes are located) were investigated. All estimates were compared to the measurement results using thermo-luminescent dosimeters (TLDs). The estimated and measured doses were implemented for 14 patients undergoing nasopharyngeal CT examination., Results: It was found that the percentage differences of the volume CT dose index (CTDI vol ), average global SSDE based on AAPM No. 220 (SSDE o,g ), average local SSDE based on AAPM No. 220 (SSDE o,l ), average global SSDE based on AAPM No. 293 (SSDE n,g ) and average local SSDE based on AAPM No. 293 (SSDE n,l ) against the measured TLD doses were 22.5, 21.7, 15.0, 9.3, and 2.1%, respectively. Purpose: To compare objective and subjective parameters in image quality and radiation dose of two MDCTs (helical 64 detector CT vs. axial 256 detector CT) in paediatric lung CT., Methods: Radiation dose and image quality were compared between non-enhanced lung CT from a helical 64-slice multidetector CT (MDCT 1) and a 256-slice scanner (MDCT 2) with axial wide-cone acquisition and using deep learning image reconstruction. In 23 size-matched paediatric studies (age 2-18 years) from each scanner, the radiation exposure, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), image sharpness and delineation of small airways were assessed. Subjective image quality was rated by 6 paediatric radiologists., Results: While MDCT 2 provided higher SNR and CNR, subjective image quality was not significantly different between studies from both scanners. Radiation exposure was lower in studies from MDCT 2 (CTDIvol 0.26 ± 0.14 mGy, effective dose 0.23 ± 0.11 mSv) than from MDCT 1 (CTDIvol 0.96 ± 0.52 mGy, effective dose 1.13 ± 0.58 mSv), p < 0.001. Despite lower radiation dose for the scout images, the relative scout-scan-ratio increased from 2.64 ± 1.42 % in MDCT 1 to 6.60 ± 5.03 % in MDCT 2 (p = 0.001)., Conclusions: By using latest scanner technology effective radiation dose can be reduced to 0.1-0.3 mSv for lung CT in children without compromising image quality. Scout image dose increasingly accounts for substantial portions of the total scan dose and needs to be optimized. Radiation is important in health and disease. It is imperative to use properly and prevent misuse or overuse. Pertinent trends of increasing radiation in the environment need analysis. We gleaned important information, from published evidence and authoritative resources, for practicing safely and preventing harm. Science & technology progress is for the betterment of mankind, and all efforts should be made to prevent any untoward effects. Children and paediatric patients deserve special attention because of their vulnerability due to multiple reasons. Effective investigations & interventions in medical settings should be done based on best evidence. All those ordering radiological investigations should take into consideration the radiation exposure values & especially decide on clinical impact of the investigation. Prenatal exposure to radiation has risks. Computed Tomography is responsible for 24% of all radiation exposure. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is useful for measuring changes in body tissue composition. Radiologists should tailor imaging individually. Radiotherapy is administered to more than half of all cancer patients. Acute toxicity alleviation and chronic toxicity consideration is important. Radiation emergencies can occur in isolation or as major catastrophe. Emergency life-support is needed. Decontamination along with using the ABCDE reduction approach components are elucidated. With increasing use of mobile phones the electro-magnetic fields produced by mobile phones use needs consideration. UV radiation overexposure prevention is with shade, clothing and hats. Applying sunscreen essential on those parts of the body that remain exposed like the face and hands. The importance of fluoroscopy as an imaging modality has been minimized relative to other cross-sectional modalities, including high-resolution computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound. Fluoroscopy examinations have decreased in clinical practice due to reduced appreciation of its usefulness, insufficient training of residents, fewer staff with adequate expertise, and poor reimbursements relative to other modalities. We revisit and build upon the prior literature and history of this decreased utilization. We then seek to prove continued value, through categorized examples and within multiple subspecialties, wherein fluoroscopy plays an integral part toward clinical diagnoses as well as optimizing patient outcomes. This is particularly true for motility and esophageal disorders, where structure and function with real-time evaluation is essential.  We additionally show several post-operative cases where the synergy of fluoroscopy with CT and endoscopy is apparent.  The fluoroscopic radiologist also has the unique ability to vary patient positioning, as opposed to traditional CT or MRI, where orthogonal views are employed without positional or temporal changes. We turn attention to the modern era, with synergistic and novel cases demonstrating that fluoroscopy remains instrumental toward achieving a diagnosis alongside other modalities. Our cases stress the need to maintain expertise in fluoroscopy skill, and underline its continued importance in residency training programs.  We conclude that fluoroscopy is a relatively inexpensive modality that is often under-appreciated in diagnostic radiology. This article consists of the study and investigative analysis of the effects of burns by radiation in humans. Cases of nuclear accidents, such as Chernobyl (ionizing radiation) and the effects of non-ionizing radiation such as infrared and microwave radiation are detailed. It is examined cases of injuries and burns by ionizing radiation due to irradiation (diagnostic equipment and medical treatment: X-rays, radiotherapy) or contamination (nuclear accidents, wars). Injuries and burns are also caused by nonionizing radiation, such as visible light (laser), ultraviolet, radiofrequency. There are numerous biological issues in the case of tissues, the ionizing radiation (ionizing particles and electromagnetic radiation: X-rays, gamma rays and high energy ultraviolet) can cause damage mainly in the DNA. This can cause mutations in its genetic code and cancer 5. In addition, damage to other tissues and organs can occur, as well as burns, erythema and lesions. The biological effects of nonionizing radiation are currently under investigation. Burns, erythema and lesions can also occur due to the following types of radiation: low energy ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, microwave, radiofrequency, electromagnetic fields. Introduction: In some instances, little knowledge regarding radiological examinations is provided to patients. The purpose was to investigate whether radiographers inform patients about radiation, and if not, the reasons for it., Methods: A questionnaire was sent to radiographers working in the public sector in Northern Finland. Radiographers were asked whether they had informed patients about the radiation dose and risks during the last year. If information was not provided, the reasons for it were investigated using multiple-answer type multiple-choice questions with the option for free text responses. The results were compared between a University Hospital and other departments and between different lengths of work experience. Altogether 174/272 (64%) radiographers responded to the questionnaire; 50% were from the University Hospital and 50% from other departments., Results: Altogether 103/174 (59%) respondents did not inform patients about the radiation dose and 93/174 (53%) did not inform them about the associated risks. Regarding a passive approach to dose information, respondents thought that the referrer had already informed the patient (49/103, 48%), information was not needed (51/103, 50%), or it might cause unnecessary fear (47/103, 46%). Reasons for a passive approach to risk information were similar (66/93, 71%; 33/93, 36%; 47/93, 51%, respectively). Regarding the results, there were no differences between the institutions or work experience levels. According to the open question, some radiographers expected patients to ask questions before informing them. Human amniotic membrane (HAM) is a biomaterial with biological properties beneficial to tissue repair, serving as a substrate for cell cultivation. Irradiation is used for tissue sterilization, but can damage the HAM structure. The objective of this paper was to construct a skin substitute, composed of human keratinocytes cultured on glycerolated HAMs, and to evaluate the influence radiation on subsequent cell culture growth. Four batches of HAMs were glycerolated, and half of them were radio-sterilzed with 25 kGy. Non-irradiated glycerolated HAM (ni-HAM) and irradiated glycerolated HAM (i-HAM) samples were then de-epithelized and analyzed using optical microscopy (Picrossirius staining), immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. Subsequently, keratinocytes were cultured on ni- and i-HAMs, and either immersed or positioned at the air-liquid interface. The basement membranes of the ni-HAM group remained intact following de-epithelialization, whereas the i-HAM group displayed no evidence or remnant presence of these membranes. Concerning the keratinocyte cultures, the ni-HAM substrate promoted the growth of multi-layered and differentiated epithelia. Keratinocytes cultured on i-HAM formed epithelium composed of three layers of stratification and discrete cell differentiation. The glycerolated HAM was compatible with cultured epithelia, demonstrating its potential as a skin substitute. Irradiation at 25 kGy caused structural damage to the amnion.

Objective: The aim of our work was to make analysis of world literature that develops a problem of impact of environment on male reproductive health., Patients and Methods: Materials and methods: We analyzed the bibliography available, until January 2020, about influence of different exogenic factors on male reproductive system., Conclusion: Conclusions: The biggest influence of ionizing radiation on mankind was reached after two big catastrophes: Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in April 1986 and an accident on the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in March 2011. However, impact of ionizing radiation on male reproductive in literature still remains controversy that needs more detailed study. Lead influences on such sperm parameters, as sperm morphology, count, motility, semen volume. So, specific attention should be paid to the type of work routinely performed by man. Another one environmental factor that has negative influence is a heat. It effects on sperm morphology and motility.

Purpose: Computerized tomography urography is used to evaluate patients with gross or microscopic hematuria. Computerized tomography urography is a high radiation dose scan and, thus, it confers a higher risk of secondary malignancy. A computerized tomography urography split bolus protocol reduces radiation exposure but it may reduce sensitivity. In this study we used a theoretical cohort of patients with hematuria in which to model the risk of missing malignancies against the benefit of averting secondary malignancies., Materials and Methods: We calculated the prevalence of renal cell carcinoma and upper tract urothelial carcinoma in patients with hematuria by pooled analysis of cohort studies, which in conjunction with split bolus sensitivity allows for the estimation of missed malignancies. The number of prevented secondary malignancies was calculated from lifetime attributable risk estimates. Sensitivity analyses were run to determine the minimum sensitivity required for a net population benefit., Results: Estimates of split bolus computerized tomography urography sensitivity ranged from 80% to 100% (mean 95.2%). At the low estimate of 80% sensitivity split bolus computerized tomography urography was beneficial in men and women with microscopic hematuria at ages less than 50 and less than 60 years, respectively. An increase in sensitivity to 90% improved the benefit 1 decade in each gender, representing 68.8% of patients with microscopic hematuria. The overall population of patients with microscopic hematuria benefited from split bolus computerized tomography urography at 91.1% sensitivity. However, in patients with gross hematuria the threshold for an overall population benefit was high at 98.4% sensitivity., Conclusions: Exposure to ionizing radiation risks causing secondary malignancy. These data indicate that split bolus computerized tomography urography may be performed safely in 70% of the population of patients with microscopic hematuria. However, it is not currently advisable in patients with gross hematuria or in other patients at high risk.

Purpose: The Image Gently® campaign was launched by several radiological societies in 2007 to promote safe imaging in children. A goal of the campaign was to reduce ionizing radiation exposure in children. Given the recurrent nature of kidney stones, affected children are at risk for unnecessary ionizing radiation exposure from computerized tomography. We sought to determine whether the Image Gently campaign led to a decrease in the use of computerized tomography for evaluating children with nephrolithiasis. We hypothesized that the campaign was the primary cause of a reduction in the use of computerized tomography., Materials and Methods: We analyzed medical claims data from 2001 to 2015 identifying children with nephrolithiasis covered by the same commercial insurance provider. Using a difference in differences design, we estimated changes in computerized tomography use after the campaign started among patients less than 18 years old compared to a control group age 18 years or older with nephrolithiasis., Results: We identified 12,734 children and 787,720 adults diagnosed with nephrolithiasis. Before 2007 quarterly rates of computerized tomography use during a stone episode (per 1,000 patients) were increasing at a parallel rate in children and adults (5.1 in children vs 7.2 in adults, p = 0.123). After the Image Gently campaign started the use of computerized tomography decreased in both groups but at a slightly higher rate in adults (difference in differences 2.96, 95% CI 0.00 to 5.91, p = 0.050)., Conclusions: Although there has been a reduction in the use of computerized tomography among children with nephrolithiasis, given a similar trend seen in adults this change cannot be primarily attributed to the Image Gently campaign.

Background: Bone marrow is extremely vulnerable to damage caused by radiation therapy. Hence, bone marrow suppression is an important side effect of radiotherapy. Effective use of radiotherapy is therefore compromised by radiation-related injuries., Material and Methods: Six Guinea-pigs were recruited for the study of which three were subjected to total body irradiation with Co 60 while the other three served as controls. Bone marrow and peripheral blood samples were collected before and at days 9, 14 and 21, post irradiation. Manual and automated counts were performed for bone marrow nucleated cells and peripheral blood cells respectively., Results: Declining bone marrow cellularity was evident immediately post irradiation. Mean ± SD of marrow cell counted per mm 3 were 121,924±281, 87,603±772, 121,367±375 and 122,750±1000 pre-irradiation and days 9, 14 and 21, postirradiation (p-values 0.10, 0.27 and 0.29 respectively). Significant drops in counts were noticed on day 9 post-irradiation for all red cell parameters (p-values <0.05), for Total White Blood Cell Count and Neutrophil count (p-values <0.05) and also on days 14 and 21 for Lymphocytes (p-values <0.05) and on day 21 for Eosinophil/Basophil/Monocytes (p-value <0.05). A significant drop in platelets counts was also noticed on day 9 (p-value <0.05) which significantly increased above pre-irradiation value on day 21., Conclusion: Total body irrradiation with Co 60 significantly affects the bone marrow with maximum reductions in marrow nucleated cells and peripheral blood cells counts on day 9 post irradiation.

During exposure of cells to acute high dose-rate ionizing radiation (IR), oxidants from the radiolysis of water can overwhelm antioxidant systems. Protecting flora from the effects of IR released from a nuclear industry of increasing global significance and managing the growth of plants during space flight both necessitate estimating the effects of chronic low dose-rate exposure to IR. In contrast to effects at acute high-dose rates, under chronic low dose-rate exposure it is subtle, progressive, long-term effects on antioxidant systems that it is important to estimate. Here, we outline a method that combines biochemical measurement and mathematical modeling to predict the effects of chronic low dose-rate IR on redox potential in plant cells over time.

Previous studies have shown that BMS-345541 (BMS, a specific IκB kinase β inhibitor) sensitized various tumor cells including MCF-7 breast cancer cells to ionizing radiation (IR). However, the mechanisms of BMS action are unknown. Since the expression of E1A-like inhibitor of differentiation 3 (EID3) was highly upregulated in MCF-7 cells after BMS treatment, we investigated the role of EID3 in the response of MCF-7 cells to IR. We found that BMS induced EID3 expression in MCF-7 cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Knockdown of EID3 by specific shRNA attenuated BMS-induced radiosensitization in MCF-7 cells. In contrast, induction of EID3 expression in an inducible EID3 expressing MCF-7 cell line with doxycycline sensitized the cells to IR. EID3-mediated sensitization of MCF-7 cells to IR was not attributed to an increase in apoptosis. Instead, EID3-expressing MCF-7 cells exhibited significantly higher levels of senescence associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) activity and higher levels of p21 and p57 than EID3-MCF-7 cells without induction of EID3 after exposure to IR. Similar findings were observed when EID3-expressing MCF-7 cells were treated with etoposide, a topoisomerase II inhibitor. Taken together, our findings reveal a novel function of EID3 and suggest that the induction of EID3 by BMS may be exploited as a new strategy to sensitize breast cancer cells to IR and chemotherapy by inducing cancer cell senescence., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS. Introduction: It is suspected that little or no information is provided to patients regarding radiological examinations. The purpose was to evaluate the coverage, content and source of this information in a university hospital., Methods: Altogether 147 patients (18-85 years) were interviewed after different examinations using a questionnaire. The patients had undergone 35 low (<1 mSv), 66 medium (1-10), and 46 high (>10) dose examinations. They were asked if they were informed about radiation use, the course or indication of the examination, the consequences of not having the examination, other options, the dose and risks of radiation, the source for the information and if any consent was enquired., Results: 52 (35%) patients did not receive any information while 95 (65%) obtained some information. Fifty-six (38%) patients received an information letter, and 75 (51%) obtained oral information, mainly from the referrer or the radiographer. The information was mostly about indication, course or radiation use, very seldom about radiation risks and the other areas. Those with a nuclear medicine examination received information more often than those with other medium- or high-dose examinations (p = 0.004). The patients scored the received information as 2.2 (mean, SD 1.3) on a Likert scale from 1 (poor) to 5 (good)., Conclusion: Patients obtained inadequate information regarding radiological examinations in a university hospital. The information was provided non-systematically from various sources. The results help to set up practical guidelines for systematic information and to follow up their efficiency. Background: To evaluate the impact of the Clarity IQ technology on reducing radiation risk in patients undergoing cardiac interventional radiology (IR) procedures., Material/methods: Phantom studies were performed with two angiographic systems, FD10 Allura Xper and FD10 Allura Clarity. In the study, we performed left atrial appendage closure. Dosimetric measurements were performed with thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) placed inside a CIRS anthropomorphic phantom. Radiation risk was estimated based on the TLD readings and expressed as the dose absorbed by particular organs. The Mann-Whitney U test was carried out to test for significance of differences in the absorbed radiation doses between the techniques., Results: During left atrial appendage closure, the estimated dose absorbed by particular organs was lower in the case of the FD10 Allura Clarity system in comparison to the Allura Xper. In this procedure, dose reduction for particular organs ranged between 49-86%., Conclusions: Application of the FD10 Allura Clarity system resulted in a significant dose reduction, thereby leading to a significant decrease in radiation risk for patients undergoing IR procedures.

Patients presenting with nephrolithiasis often undergo repeated imaging studies before, during, and after management. Considering the significant risk of stone recurrence in primary stone-formers, repeated imaging studies are not uncommon. Cumulative effects of ionizing radiation exposure from various imaging studies could potentially increase the risk for developing cataracts and solid malignancies in urolithiasis patients. Therefore, practitioners planning or performing imaging studies with ionizing radiation are compelled to keep radiation exposure to humans and the environment as low as possible, thus strictly adhering to the ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) principles. This chapter will review the latest literature on lifetime radiation exposure of nephrolithiasis patients and present the latest recommendations in minimizing radiation exposure to them pre-, intra-, and postoperatively. For patients presenting with acute renal colic, especially those with body mass index of < 30, low-dose noncontrast computed tomography is the current gold standard of imaging. Patients with opaque stones are followed with ultrasonography (US) and plain radiography (kidney, ureter, and bladder or KUB). Intraoperatively, pulsed fluoroscopy could be used to significantly reduce radiation during ureteroscopy and percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Immediately postoperatively and in the long term, US and KUB could be used to follow up patients with nephrolithiasis. Only symptomatic patients suspected of ureteral stricture should obtain tri-phasic CT urography. Following these latest imaging guidelines from the American Urological Association will dramatically reduce lifetime radiation exposure to patients with nephrolithiasis.

Introduction: Little information is available concerning the radiation exposure of anesthesiologists, and no such data have previously been collected in Iran. This prospective study was performed to determine the amount of radiation exposure of anesthesiologists for the purpose of assessing whether or not dangerous levels of radiation exposures were being reached, and to identify factors that correlate with excessive risk., Participants and Methods: The radiation exposure of all anesthesiology residents and the attending of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences during a 3-month period (from June to August 2016) was measured using a film badge with monthly readings. Physicians were divided into two groups: group 1 (the ones assigned to ORs with radiation exposure), and group 2 (the ones assigned to ORs with no or minimal radiation exposure)., Results: A total number of 10744 procedures were performed in 3 major university hospitals including 353 cases of pediatric angiography, 251 cases of percutaneous nephrolithotomy, 43 cases of chronic pain palliation and 672 cases of orthopedic surgeries with C-arm application. In all 3 months, there were statistically significant differences in the amount of radiation exposure between the two groups., Conclusion: Anesthesiologists working in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, pain treatment service, orthopedic and urologic ORs are exposed to statistically significantly higher radiation levels compared to their colleagues in other ORs. The radiation exposure to anesthesiologists can rise to high levels; therefore, they should get proper teaching, shielding and periodic evaluations., Competing Interests: Conflict of interests: None.

There are both statistically valid and invalid reasons why scientists with differing default hypotheses can disagree in high-profile situations. Examples can be found in recent correspondence in this journal, which may offer lessons for resolving challenges to mainstream science, particularly when adherents of a minority view attempt to elevate the status of outlier studies and/or claim that self-interest explains the acceptance of the dominant theory. Edward J. Calabrese and I have been debating the historical origins of the linear no-threshold theory (LNT) of carcinogenesis and its use in the regulation of ionizing radiation. Professor Calabrese, a supporter of hormesis, has charged a committee of scientists with misconduct in their preparation of a 1956 report on the genetic effects of atomic radiation. Specifically he argues that the report mischaracterized the LNT research record and suppressed calculations of some committee members. After reviewing the available scientific literature, I found that the contemporaneous evidence overwhelmingly favored a (genetics) LNT and that no calculations were suppressed. Calabrese's claims about the scientific record do not hold up primarily because of lack of attention to statistical analysis. Ironically, outlier studies were more likely to favor supra-linearity, not sub-linearity. Finally, the claim of investigator bias, which underlies Calabrese's accusations about key studies, is based on misreading of text. Attention to ethics charges, early on, may help seed a counter narrative explaining the community's adoption of a default hypothesis and may help focus attention on valid evidence and any real weaknesses in the dominant paradigm., (Copyright © 2017 The Authors. Background: Understanding the basis of clinical radiosensitivity is a key goal of radiation research. In this study, we used the limiting dilution assay (LDA) to analyze in vitro radiosensitivity of cell lines from individuals with breast and other cancers, who had been treated with ionizing radiation, and who either had a non-radiosensitive (RS) radiation response or who were clinically RS., Methods: Lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) were created from 29 cancer patients including 19 RS patients, 10 controls who had not developed severe normal tissue reactions, and 1 ataxia telangiectasia RS control cell line. The clinically RS patients had grade 3 or grade 4 reactions; one had a grade 2 reaction. All cells were exposed to graded doses of gamma-radiation in vitro and cell survival assessed via LDA. Cell survival was expressed on non-linear regression analysis-fitted survival curves and also as the surviving fraction at 2 Gray (Gy) (SF 2 )., Results: Our LDA analysis yielded two notable positive results. Firstly, it could distinguish control cells from cells from pooled breast cancer cases with severe reactions of all types (acute reactors, consequential late reactors and late reactors). Secondly, two radiosensitivity outliers were detected on the fitted curves, corresponding clinically to grade 3 and 4 late radiation reactions in breast and head and neck cancer cases respectively. The assay showed considerable cell survival heterogeneity., Conclusions: The LDA as used here may provide unique clinical utility in detecting potential RS breast cancer patients prior to radiotherapy (RT), a form of personalized medicine. The assay may be especially useful in situations where its results can be temporally available prior to therapy initiation (e.g., those patients not undergoing RT until some months after surgery, typically those having adjuvant chemotherapy prior to RT). Local ionizing radiation causes damage to bone metabolism, it reduces blood supply and cellularity over time. Recent studies indicate that radiation promotes biological response outside the treatment field. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ionizing radiation on bone repair outside the irradiated field. Ten healthy male Wistar rats were used; and five animals were submitted to radiotherapy on the left femur. After 4 weeks, in all animals were created bone defects in the right and left femurs. Seven days after surgery, animals were euthanized. The femurs were removed and randomly divided into 3 groups (n=5): Control (C) (right femur of the non-irradiated animals); Local ionizing radiation (IR) (left femur of the irradiated animals); Contralateral ionizing radiation (CIR) (right femur of the irradiated animals). The femurs were processed and embedded in paraffin; and bone histologic sections were evaluated to quantify the bone neoformation. Histomorphometric analysis showed that there was no significant difference between groups C (24.6±7.04) and CIR (25.3±4.31); and IR group not showed bone neoformation. The deleterious effects of ionizing radiation on the growth plate continue to be cause for concern. This study evaluated the ionizing radiation effects on bone development and growth plate in the tibia of rats. All animals were submitted to ionizing radiation on the left leg. The animals were divided into two groups and euthanized 30 and 60 days after radiation. The tibiae were removed and separated into groups: control 30 days, irradiated 30 days, control 60 days and irradiated 60 days. Animals in each group (n = 7) were used for macroscopic and histological analysis. The irradiated tibiae showed arrested growth, angular deformity and limb length discrepancy when compared with nonirradiated tibiae. There was statistical difference between control and radiation groups in all the parameters analyzed, except in the lateral-medial thickness of the distal epiphysis. Histological analysis showed evident changes in the growth plate, which was thicker in the Groups irradiated for 30 days, and irradiated for 60 days, compared with their respective controls. The growth plate showed wide areas with disorganized zones of chondrocytes and severely reduced calcification zone. It was concluded that ionizing radiation damaged the growth plate, compromised the endochondral ossification process, and resulted in complete arrest of bone development., (© 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Purpose: To measure the knowledge of oncology patients regarding use and potential risks of ionizing radiation in diagnostic imaging., Methods: A 30-question survey was developed and e-mailed to 48,736 randomly selected patients who had undergone a diagnostic imaging study at a comprehensive cancer center between November 1, 2013 and January 31, 2014. The survey was designed to measure patients' knowledge about use of ionizing radiation in diagnostic imaging and attitudes about radiation. Nonresponse bias was quantified by sending an abbreviated survey to patients who did not respond to the original survey., Results: Of the 48,736 individuals who were sent the initial survey, 9,098 (18.7%) opened it, and 5,462 (11.2%) completed it. A total of 21.7% of respondents reported knowing the definition of ionizing radiation; 35.1% stated correctly that CT used ionizing radiation; and 29.4% stated incorrectly that MRI used ionizing radiation. Many respondents did not understand risks from exposure to diagnostic doses of ionizing radiation: Of 3,139 respondents who believed that an abdominopelvic CT scan carried risk, 1,283 (40.9%) believed sterility was a risk; 669 (21.3%) believed heritable mutations were a risk; 657 (20.9%) believed acute radiation sickness was a risk; and 135 (4.3%) believed cataracts were a risk., Conclusions: Most patients and caregivers do not possess basic knowledge regarding the use of ionizing radiation in oncologic diagnostic imaging. To ensure health literacy and high-quality patient decision making, efforts to educate patients and caregivers should be increased. We assessed the clinical value of repeat spine CT scan in 108 patients aged 18-60 years who underwent repeat lumbar spine CT scan for low back pain or radiculopathy from January 2008 to December 2010. Patients with a neoplasm or symptoms suggesting underlying disease were excluded from the study. Clinical data was retrospectively reviewed. Index examinations and repeat CT scan performed at a mean of 24.3 ± 11.3 months later were compared by a senior musculoskeletal radiologist. Disc abnormalities (herniation, sequestration, bulge), spinal stenosis, disc space narrowing, and bony changes (osteophytes, fractures, other changes) were documented. Indications for CT scan were low back pain (60 patients, 55%), radiculopathy (46 patients, 43%), or nonspecific back pain (two patients, 2%). A total of 292 spine pathologies were identified in 98 patients (90.7%); in 10 patients (9.3%) no spine pathology was seen on index or repeat CT scan. At repeat CT scan, 269/292 pathologies were unchanged (92.1%); 10/292 improved (3.4%), 8/292 worsened (2.8%, disc herniation or spinal stenosis), and five new pathologies were identified. No substantial therapeutic change was required in patients with worsened or new pathology. Added diagnostic value from repeat CT scan performed within 2-3 years was rare in patients suffering chronic or recurrent low back pain or radiculopathy, suggesting that repeat CT scan should be considered only in patients with progressive neurologic deficits, new neurologic complaints, or signs implying serious underlying conditions., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: An interlaboratory comparison of radiation dosimetry was conducted to determine the accuracy of doses being used experimentally for animal exposures within a large multi-institutional research project. The background and approach to this effort are described and discussed in terms of basic findings, problems and solutions., Methods: Dosimetry tests were carried out utilizing optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimeters embedded midline into mouse carcasses and thermal luminescence dosimeters (TLD) embedded midline into acrylic phantoms., Results: The effort demonstrated that the majority (4/7) of the laboratories was able to deliver sufficiently accurate exposures having maximum dosing errors of ≤5%. Comparable rates of 'dosimetric compliance' were noted between OSL- and TLD-based tests. Data analysis showed a highly linear relationship between 'measured' and 'target' doses, with errors falling largely between 0 and 20%. Outliers were most notable for OSL-based tests, while multiple tests by 'non-compliant' laboratories using orthovoltage X-rays contributed heavily to the wide variation in dosing errors., Conclusions: For the dosimetrically non-compliant laboratories, the relatively high rates of dosing errors were problematic, potentially compromising the quality of ongoing radiobiological research. This dosimetry effort proved to be instructive in establishing rigorous reviews of basic dosimetry protocols ensuring that dosing errors were minimized.

Geant4 is an open source simulation toolkit based on C++, which its advantages progressively lead to applications in research domains especially modeling the biological effects of ionizing radiation at the sub-cellular scale. However, it was shown that Geant4 does not give a reasonable result in the prediction of antiproton dose especially in Bragg peak. One of the reasons could be lack of reliable physic model to predict the final states of annihilation products like pions. Considering the fact that most of the antiproton deposited dose is resulted from high-LET nuclear fragments following pion interaction in surrounding nucleons, we reproduced depth dose curves of most probable energy range of pions and neutron particle using Geant4. We consider this work one of the steps to understand the origin of the error and finally verification of Geant4 for antiproton tracking. Geant4 toolkit version 9.4.6.p01 and Fluka version 2006.3 were used to reproduce the depth dose curves of 220 MeV pions (both negative and positive) and 70 MeV neutrons. The geometry applied in the simulations consist a 20 × 20 × 20 cm(3) water tank, similar to that used in CERN for antiproton relative dose measurements. Different physic lists including Quark-Gluon String Precompound (QGSP)&#95;Binary Cascade (BIC)&#95;HP, the recommended setting for hadron therapy, were used. In the case of pions, Geant4 resulted in at least 5% dose discrepancy between different physic lists at depth close to the entrance point. Even up to 15% discrepancy was found in some cases like QBBC compared to QGSP&#95;BIC&#95;HP. A significant difference was observed in dose profiles of different Geant4 physic list at small depths for a beam of pions. In the case of neutrons, large dose discrepancy was observed when LHEP or LHEP&#95;EMV lists were applied. The magnitude of this dose discrepancy could be even 50% greater than the dose calculated by LHEP (or LHEP&#95;EMV) at larger depths. We found that effect different Geant4 physic list in reproducing depth dose profile of the beam of pions was not negligible. Because the discrepancies were pronounced in smaller depth and also regarding the contribution of pions in deposited dose of a beam of antiproton, further investigation on choosing most suitable and accurate physic list for this purpose should be done. Furthermore, this study showed careful attention must be paid to choose the appropriate Geant4 physic list for neutron tracking depending to the applications criteria. We failed to find any agreement between results from Geant4 and Fluka to reproduce depth dose profile of pion with the energy range used in this study.

Aims: Fallout from atomic bomb testing may travel great distances before precipitating. Males are born in excess of females in a ratio that approximates 0.515 (M/T: male live births divided by total live births. Radiation increases M/T by causing lethal malformations that affect female more than male foetuses, decreasing total births. This study was carried out in order to ascertain whether the effects of increased background radiation levels from atomic weapon testing had any widespread effects on M/T and births in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Australasia in relation to the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963., Methods: Annual live births by gender were obtained from a World Health Organization dataset and annual number of atomic bomb tests were also obtained (historical data)., Results: Overall, 94.5% of births studied showed a uniform reduction in M/T between the early 1950s to the late 1960s, followed by an increase to the mid-1970s, with a subsequent decline. A negative correlation of M/T with total births was found in 66% of births studied, and these were the regions which exhibited the rising M/T pattern in the 1970s. The birth deficit for countries with significant correlations of total births with M/T (North America, Europe and Asia) was estimated at 10090701., Conclusions: A rising M/T was found in most regions in temporal association with atomic weapon testing. Most of these regions also had an associated decline in total births. Elevated levels of man-made ambient radiation may have reduced total births, affecting pregnancies carrying female pregnancies more than those carrying male pregnancies, thereby skewing M/T toward a higher male proportion.

Purpose: Ureteroscopy is central to the surgical management of ureteral stones. Fluoroscopy is conventionally used for intraoperative guidance, although there is growing effort to decrease the exposure of patients and staff to ionizing radiation. We developed a radiation-free approach to ureteroscopy using ultrasound guidance to manage ureteral stones. To our knowledge we present the first randomized trial to study its safety and efficacy., Materials and Methods: This single center, randomized clinical trial from 2011 to 2013 enlisted patients who presented with symptomatic ureteral stones 8 mm or less without a significant ipsilateral stone burden. Patients were randomly assigned to ultrasound or fluoroscopic guided ureteroscopy after temporizing ureteral stent placement. Intraoperative ultrasound guidance was performed using real-time imaging with the transducer placed at the patient flank to visualize the collecting system of the ipsilateral kidney. We compared operative time, stone size, stone-free status and complication rates between the 2 groups., Results: A total of 50 patients were enrolled in study with 25 per arm. There was no difference in stone size (5.9 vs 5.7 mm), patient age (56 vs 52 years) or body mass index (31 vs 30 kg/m(2)) in the test group compared to controls. The ultrasound guidance cohort showed no significant difference in the stone-free rate (86% vs 86%) or the complication rate (8% vs 16%) compared to controls. Operative time was no longer in the ultrasound guidance cohort., Conclusions: In this feasibility study we found that ureteral stones may be definitively managed in a timely, effective and safe fashion without ionizing radiation in the general population using this novel technique of ultrasound guided ureteroscopy., (Copyright © 2014 American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc. Purpose: To determine the cumulative effective dose (CED) of radiation from medical imaging and intervention in patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) who have pulmonary arteriovenous malformations and to identify clinical factors associated with exposure to high levels of radiation., Methods: All patients with at least 1 pulmonary arteriovenous malformation were identified from the dedicated patient database of a tertiary HHT referral centre. Computerized imaging and electronic patient records were systematically examined to identify all imaging studies performed from 1989-2010. The effective dose was determined for each study, and CED was calculated retrospectively., Results: Among 246 patients (mean age, 53 years; 62.2% women) with a total of 2065 patient-years, 3309 procedures that involved ionizing radiation were performed. CED ranged from 0.2-307.6 mSv, with a mean of 51.7 mSv. CED exceeded 100 mSv in 26 patients (11%). Interventional procedures and computed tomography (CT) were the greatest contributors, which accounted for 51% and 46% of the total CED, respectively. Factors associated with high cumulative exposure were epistaxis (odds ratio 2.7 [95% confidence interval, 1.1-6.3]; P = .02), HHT-related gastrointestinal bleeding (odds ratio 2.0 [95% confidence interval, 1.0-3.8]; P = .04) and number of patient-years (P < .0001)., Conclusions: Patients with HHT are exposed to a significant cumulative radiation dose from diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Identifiable subsets of patients are at increased risk. A proportion of patients receive doses at levels that are associated with harm. Introduction: The male:female ratio at birth (male births divided by total live births - M/T) has been shown to increase in response to ionizing radiation due to gender-biased fetal loss, with excess female loss. M/T rose sharply in 1987 in central-eastern European countries following the Chernobyl accident in 1986. This study analyses M/T and births for the former Soviet Republics and for the countries most contaminated by the event., Methods: Annual birth data was obtained from the World Health Organisation. The countries with the highest exposure levels (by ¹³⁷Cs) were identified from an official publication of the International Atomic Energy Agency. All of the former Soviet states were also analysed and the periods before and after 1986 were compared., Results: Except for the Baltic States, all regions in the former USSR showed a significant rise in M/T from 1986. There were significant rises in M/T in the three most exposed (Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation). The birth deficit in the post-Soviet states for the ten years following Chernobyl was estimated at 2,072,666, of which 1,087,924 are accounted by Belarus and Ukraine alone., Discussion: Chernobyl has resulted in the loss of millions of births, a process that has involved female even more than male fetuses. This is another and oft neglected consequence of widespread population radiation contamination.

Aims: The Windscale (UK) fire of 1957 carried radioactive fallout according to the then prevailing wind patterns, in a North-Easterly direction across the Nordic countries, toward Norway. The male:female ratio at birth (M/F) is known to be increased after parental exposure to ionising radiation due to foetal losses that affect female more than male pregnancies. This study was carried out in order to ascertain whether the Windscale fire had any effects on M/F and birth rates in the United Kingdom and Scandinavia., Methods: Annual live births by gender were obtained from a World Health Organization dataset. The null hypothesis was that there were no significant changes in M/F or in births in temporal association with the 1957 Windscale event in abovementioned countries., Results: There were no significant effects on the UK and most of Scandinavia but there was a significant rise in M/F for Norway and Finland with an aggregate deficit of around 4000 births in each country., Conclusions: A recent study suggests that the plume from the reactor extended further east than previously believed. This study confirms that contamination from the Windscale fire had a negligible impact on the UK (as measured by birth effects) but had a significant impact on births in Norway and Sweden.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine if 4th-year interns plan to x-ray their patients, once they are in private practice, in accordance with the principles taught throughout their radiology program and with the evidence-based imaging guidelines outlined in the literature., Methods: Questionnaires were provided to all 4th-year interns. Each questionnaire consisted of 10 case scenarios representing possible chiropractic patients. Each intern was asked if he or she would radiograph the patient and, if so, which views would be taken. A "gold standard" was established by two chiropractic radiologists using evidence-based guidelines. Intern answers were compared with the gold standard using percent agreement., Results: Sixty-eight interns completed the questionnaire. Agreement between the interns and the gold standards for the question of whether or not they would take x-rays ranged from 63.2% to 100%. The percent agreement for the correct radiographic views chosen ranged from 32.6% to 48.4%., Conclusion: Interns are generally aware of and plan to apply the radiographic guidelines for determining whether or not radiographs are indicated, as outlined in the current literature. However, interns are inconsistent in choosing the correct views.
