This study examines the efficacy of icephobic polyurethane nanocomposite coatings in mitigating corrosion on an aluminum substrate. A titanium-based conversion coating is applied to modify the substrate, and the research focuses on optimizing the dual functionalities of icephobicity and anticorrosion within the polyurethane coatings while ensuring strong substrate adhesion. The coatings are formulated using fluoropolyol, isocyanate, and silica nanoparticles treated with polydimethylsiloxane. Surface properties are analyzed using contact angles, contact angle hysteresis measurements, and atomic force microscopy, and the coatings' icephobicity is evaluated through differential scanning calorimetry, freezing time delay, ice adhesion under impact and non-impact conditions, and ice accretion tests. The corrosion resistance and adhesive strength of the coatings are assessed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cross-cut tests, respectively. Increasing the concentration of silica nanoparticles to 10 wt.% increases contact angles to 167°, although the 4 wt.% coating produces the lowest contact angle hysteresis (3° ± 0.5°) and ice nucleation temperature (-23 °C). The latter coating is then applied to a substrate pretreated with a titanium/cerium-based conversion coating. This prepared surface maintains an ice adhesion of about 15 kPa after 15 icing/de-icing cycles and provides approximately 90 days of surface protection (|Z| lf = 1.6 × 10 9 Ω·cm 2 ). Notably, the impedance value exceeds that of untreated substrates, underscoring the effectiveness of the titanium/cerium-based conversion coating in enhancing both corrosion resistance and coating adhesion to the substrate.

Hypothesis: Soft materials are promising candidates for designing passive de-icing systems. It is unclear whether low adhesion on soft surfaces is due to elasticity or lubrication, and how these properties affect the ice detachment mechanism. This study presents a systematic analysis of ice adhesion on soft materials with different lubricant content to better understand the underpinning interaction., Experiments: The wetting and mechanical properties of soft polydimethylsiloxane with different lubricant content were thoroughly characterized by contact angle, AFM indentation, and rheology measurements. The collected information was used to understand the relationship with the ice adhesion results, obtained by using different ice block sizes., Findings: Three different de-icing mechanisms were identified: (i) single detachment occurs when small ice blocks are considered, and the ice completely detaches in a single event. In the case of larger ice blocks, the reattachment of the ice block is promoted by either: (ii) stick-slip or, (iii) interfacial slippage, depending on the lubricant content. It was confirmed that the ice adhesion strength not only depends on material properties but also on experimental conditions, such as the ice dimensions. Ice protection techniques have attracted significant interest, notably in aerospace and wind energy applications. However, the current solutions are mostly costly and inconvenient due to energy-intensive and environmental concerns. One of the appealing strategies is the use of passive icephobicity, in the form of coatings, which is induced by means of several material strategies, such as hydrophobicity, surface texturing, surface elasticity, and the physical infusion of ice-depressing liquids, etc. In this review, surface-roughness-related icephobicity is critically discussed to understand the challenges and the role of roughness, especially on superhydrophobic surfaces. Surface roughness as an intrinsic, independent surface property for anti-icing and de-icing performance is also debated, and their interdependence is explained using the related physical mechanisms and thermodynamics of ice nucleation. Furthermore, the role of surface roughness in the case of elastomeric or low-modulus polymeric coatings, which typically instigate an easy release of ice, is examined. In addition to material-centric approaches, the influence of surface roughness in de-icing evaluation is also explored, and a comparative assessment is conducted to understand the testing sensitivity to various surface characteristics. This review exemplifies that surface roughness plays a crucial role in incorporating and maintaining icephobic performance and is intrinsically interlinked with other surface-induced icephobicity strategies, including superhydrophobicity and elastomeric surfaces. Furthermore, the de-icing evaluation methods also appear to be roughness sensitive in a certain range, indicating a dominant role of mechanically interlocked ice.

Hypothesis: Characterizing the microstructure of an ice/surface interface and its effect on the icephobic behavior of surfaces remains a significant challenge. Introducing X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) can provide unprecedented insights into the internal (porosity) and interfacial structures, i.e. wetting regime, between (super)hydrophobic surfaces and ice by visualizing these optically inaccessible regions., Experiments: Frozen droplets with controlled volume were deposited on top of metallic and polymeric substrates with different levels of wettability. Different modes of XCT (3D and 4D) were utilized to obtain information on the internal and interfacial structure of the ice/surface system. The results were supplemented by conventional surface analysis techniques, including optical profilometry and contact angle measurements., Findings: Using XCT on ice/surface systems, the 3D and 4D (imaging with temporal resolution) structural information can be visualized. Hypothesis: Ice accretion on component surfaces often causes severe impacts or accidents. Liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) have drawn much attention as icephobic materials for ice mitigation in recent years due to their outstanding icephobicity. However, the durability of LIS constructions remains a big challenge, including mechanical vulnerability and rapid depletion of lubricants. The practical applications of LIS materials are significantly restrained, and the full potential of LIS for ice prevention has yet to be demonstrated., Experiments: A universal approach was proposed to introduce microporous metallic scaffolds in the LIS construction to increase the applicability and durability, and to prompt the potential of LIS for ice mitigation. Microporous Ni scaffolds were chosen to integrate with polydimethylsiloxane modified by silicone oil addition., Findings: The new LIS construction demonstrated significantly improved durability in icing/de-icing cyclic test, and it also offered a solution for the rapid oil depletion by restraining the deformation of the matrix material. Low ice adhesion strength could be maintained via a micro-crack initiation mechanism. With the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill that removed hemp from the Controlled Substances Act altogether, production of hemp is experiencing a renaissance. Building on this revival and re-emergence of hemp, we designed and fabricated hemp-based sustainable and robust slippery surfaces by coating hemp paper with beeswax and subsequently infusing it with hemp oil. A wide variety of aqueous liquids and beverages easily slide on our hemp-based sustainable slippery surfaces, without leaving a trace. We also fabricated hemp-based sustainable slippery surfaces using different textured metals. Our hemp-based sustainable slippery metal surfaces display good icephobic and antithrombotic properties. With these attributes, we envision that our hemp-based sustainable slippery surfaces will pave the path to more safe, non-toxic, and biodegradable or recyclable slippery surfaces for applications in food packaging, anti-icing or de-icing coatings, and antithrombotic medical devices., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Superhydrophobic surfaces fabricated by grafting 1H,1H,2H,2H-heptadecafluorodecyl trimethoxysilane (FD-TMS) and polydimethylsiloxane triethoxysilane (PDMS-TES) onto a nano-micro hierarchical aluminum (Al) surface are considered to possess substantial anti-icing functionality, with delayed freezing and low ice-adhesion strength (IAS). Verifying the impacts of PDMS and the synergism of PDMS and FD on the anti-icing performance is the goal of this study. Roughness, one of the prerequisites for superhydrophobicity, was obtained by etching Al substrates in aqueous HCl, followed by immersion in boiling water. FD-TMS and PDMS-TES were then coated on the rough Al substrates layer by layer; a congener coated with a single layer was also prepared for comparison. The FD-PDMS 1.92 (1.92 wt.%) coating, in which FD-TMS and PDMS-TES were used as primary and secondary coating materials, respectively, exhibited superior icephobicity, with the lowest IAS of 28 kPa under extremely condensing weather conditions (-20 °C and 70% relative humidity, RH) and the longest freezing delay time of 230 min (at -18 °C). These features are attributed to the incorporation of a dense coating layer with a low-surface-tension FD and the high mobility of PDMS, which lowered the contact area and interaction between the ice and substrate. The substrate coated with FD-PDMS 1.92 exhibited improved durability with an IAS of 63 kPa after 40 icing/melting cycles, which is far less than that achieved with the FD single-layer coating.

Anti-icing coatings have provided a very good alternative to current, uneconomic, active deicing methods, and their use would bring a number of significant benefits to many industries, such as aviation and energy. Some of the most promising icephobic surfaces are those with hydrophobic properties. However, the relationship between hydrophobicity and low ice adhesion is not yet clearly defined. In this work, chemical modification of an epoxy gelcoat with chemical modifiers from the group of double organofunctionalized polysiloxanes (generally called multifunctionalized organosilicon compounds (MFSCs)) was applied. The anti-icing properties of manufactured coatings were determined by means of measurements of shear strength between the ice layer and the modified surface, conducted using a tensile machine. In the work, tests were also performed on the roughness, wettability, and durability of the properties in an aging chamber. It was found that the performed modifications of the coating's chemical composition by the addition of polysiloxanes enabled us to reduce ice adhesion by 51% and to increase the water contact angle by 14% in comparison to the neat gelcoat. A reduction in ice adhesion was also observed with the increasing water contact angle and with decreasing surface roughness. In addition, only one modification recorded an increase in ice adhesion after exposure in the aging chamber.

Icephobic coatings interest various industries facing icing problems. However, their durability represents a current limitation in real applications. Therefore, understanding the degradation of coatings under various environmental stresses is necessary for further coating development. Here, lubricated icephobic coatings were fabricated using a flame spray method with hybrid feedstock injection. Low-density polyethylene represented the main coating component. Two additives, namely fully hydrogenated cottonseed oil and paraffinic wax, were added to the coating structure to enhance coating icephobicity. Coating properties were characterised, including topography, surface roughness, thermal properties, wettability, and icephobicity. Moreover, their performance was investigated under various environmental stresses, such as repeated icing/deicing cycles, immersion in corrosive media, and exposure to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. According to the results, all coatings exhibited medium-low ice adhesion, with slightly more stable icephobic behaviour for cottonseed oil-based coatings over the icing/deicing cycles. Surface roughness slightly increased, and wetting performances decreased after the cyclic tests, but chemical changes were not revealed. Moreover, coatings demonstrated good chemical resistance in selected corrosive media, with better performance for paraffin-based coatings. However, a slight decrease in hydrophobicity was detected due to surface structural changes. Finally, paraffin-based coatings showed better resistance under UV irradiation based on carbonyl index and colour change measurements.

Superhydrophobicity and icephobicity are governed by surface chemistry and surface structure. These two features signify a potential advance in surface engineering and have recently garnered significant attention from the research community. This review aims to simulate further research in the development of superhydrophobic and icephobic surfaces in order to achieve their wide-spread adoption in practical applications. The review begins by establishing the fundamentals of the wetting phenomenon and wettability parameters. This is followed by the recent advances in modeling and simulations of the response of superhydrophobic surfaces to static and dynamic droplets contact and impingement, respectively. In view of their versatility and multifunctionality, a special attention is given to the development of these surfaces using nanocomposites. Furthermore, the review considers advances in icephobicity, its comprehensive characterization and its relation to superhydrophobicity. Low-adhesive surfaces have been highlighted due to the potentials to mitigate fouling issues by preventing unwanted substances from adhering. Realizing superhydrophobicity with 3D surface structures/chemical modifiers or fabricating lubricant-assisted slippery surfaces has been demonstrated to realize low-adhesive surfaces. However, they still need to overcome the transition to Wenzel from Cassie states of droplets on 3D surface structures or the lubricant depletion issues of slippery surfaces for sustainable operations. Herein, we report the fabrication of low-adhesive polymeric surfaces, neither assisted by 3D surface structures/chemical modifiers nor lubricants, which is realized by embedding the interconnected pore networks underneath the top smooth surface using a water steaming method. The fabricated silicone surfaces exhibit low-adhesive properties due to the stress concentration effects generated by the subsurface-structured pores, favorable for easy detachment of the adherent from the surface. Our platform can be exploited to lower adhesion of superhydrophilic surfaces or to achieve ultralow-adhesive properties upon combination with superhydrophobicity. Finally, scale precipitation tests reveal 4.2 times lower scale accumulation of our low-adhesive polymeric surfaces than that in control samples.

Ice-building up on the leading edge of wings and other surfaces exposed to icing atmospheric conditions can negatively influence the aerodynamic performances of aircrafts. In the past, research activities focused on understanding icing phenomena and finding effective countermeasures. Efforts have been dedicated to creating coatings capable of reducing the adhesion strength of ice to a surface. Nevertheless, coatings still lack functional stability, and their application can be harmful to health and the environment. Pulsed laser surface treatments have been proven as a viable technology to induce icephobicity on metallic surfaces. However, a study aimed to find the most effective microstructures for reducing ice adhesion still needs to be carried out. This study investigates the variation of the ice adhesion strength of micro-textured aluminum surfaces treated using laser-based methods. The icephobic performance is tested in an icing wind tunnel, simulating realistic icing conditions. Finally, it is shown that optimum surface textures lead to a reduction of the ice adhesion strength from originally 57 kPa down to 6 kPa, corresponding to a relative reduction of ~90%. Consequently, these new insights will be of great importance in the development of functionalized surfaces, permitting an innovative approach to prevent the icing of aluminum components.

Surface engineering promotes possibilities to develop sustainable solutions to icing challenges. Durable icephobic solutions are under high interest because the functionality of many surfaces can be limited both over time and in icing conditions. To solve this, one potential approach is to use thermally sprayed polymer or composite coatings with multifunctional properties as a novel surface design method. In thermal spraying, coating materials and structures can be tailored in order to achieve different surface properties, e.g., wetting performance, roughness and protection against several weathering and wearing conditions. These, in turn, are beneficial for excellent icephobic performance and surface durability. The icephobicity of several different surfaces are tested in our icing wind tunnel (IWiT). Here, mixed-glaze ice is accreted from supercooled water droplets and the ice adhesion is measured using a centrifugal adhesion tester (CAT). The present study focuses on the icephobicity of thermally sprayed coatings. In addition, surface-related properties are evaluated in order to illustrate the correlation between the icephobic performance and the surface properties of differently tailored thermally sprayed coatings as well as compared those to other coatings and surfaces.

Anti-icing/icephobic coatings, typically applied in the form of surface functional materials, are considered to be an ideal selection to solve the icing issues faced by daily life and industrial production. However, the applications of anti-icing coatings are greatly limited by the two main challenges: bonding strength with substrates and stability of the high anti-icing performance. Here, we designed and fabricated a kind of high-performance superhydrophobic fluorinated silica (F-SiO 2 )@polydimethylsiloxane coatings and further emphasized the improvement of the bonding strength with substrates and the maintenance of high anti-icing performance. The resultant coatings exhibited excellent water repellency with a contact angle up to 155.3° and a very short contact time (∼10.2 ms) of impact droplets. At low temperatures, the coming droplets still rapidly rebounded off the coating surface, and the superhydrophobic coatings displayed a more than 50-fold increase of freezing time comparing with bare aluminum. The ice adhesion strength on the coatings was only 26.3 kPa, which was far less than that (821.9 kPa) of bare aluminum. Furthermore, the nanoporous structures constructed by anodic oxidation could tremendously enhance the bonding strength of the coatings with the substrate, which was evaluated through a standard method (ASTM D3359). The anti-icing properties still retained high stability under the conditions of 30 icing/deicing cycles, soaking, and scouring of acid solution (pH = 5.6). This work can effectively push the anti-icing coatings toward a real-world application.

Macrotextured superhydrophobic surfaces can reduce droplet-substrate contact times of impacting water droplets; however, surface designs with similar performance for significantly more viscous liquids are missing, despite their importance in nature and technology such as for chemical shielding, food-staining repellency, and supercooled (viscous) water droplet removal in anti-icing applications. Here, we introduce a deterministic, controllable, and upscalable method to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces with a 3D-printed architecture, combining arrays of alternating surface protrusions and indentations. We show a more than threefold contact time reduction of impacting viscous droplets up to a fluid viscosity of 3.7 mPa·s, which equals 3.7 times the viscosity of water at room temperature, covering the viscosity of many chemicals and supercooled water. On the basis of the combined consideration of the fluid flow within and the simultaneous droplet dynamics above the texture, we recommend future pathways to rationally architecture such surfaces, all realizable with the methodology presented here.

Surface icing affects the safety and performance of numerous processes in technology. Previous studies mostly investigated freezing of individual droplets. The interaction among multiple droplets during freezing is investigated less, especially on nanotextured icephobic surfaces, despite its practical importance as water droplets never appear in isolation, but in groups. Here we show that freezing of a supercooled droplet leads to spontaneous self-heating and induces strong vaporization. The resulting, rapidly propagating vapor front causes immediate cascading freezing of neighboring supercooled droplets upon reaching them. We put forth the explanation that, as the vapor approaches cold neighboring droplets, it can lead to local supersaturation and formation of airborne microscopic ice crystals, which act as freezing nucleation sites. The sequential triggering and propagation of this mechanism results in the rapid freezing of an entire droplet ensemble, resulting in ice coverage of the nanotextured surface. Although cascade freezing is observed in a low-pressure environment, it introduces an unexpected pathway of freezing propagation that can be crucial for the performance of rationally designed icephobic surfaces.

Despite exceptional recent advances in tailoring the wettability of surfaces, to date, no engineered surface can passively suppress the in-plane growth of frost that invariably occurs in humid, subfreezing environments. Here, we show that up to 90% of a surface can exhibit passive antifrosting by using chemical or physical wettability patterns to template "ice stripes" across the surface. As ice exhibits a depressed vapor pressure relative to liquid water, these sacrificial ice stripes siphon the supersaturated water vapor to keep the intermediate surface areas dry from dew and frost. Further, we show that when these sacrificial ice stripes are elevated atop microfins, they diffusively coarsen in a suspended state above the surface. The suspended state of the coarsening ice results in a diffusive growth rate an order of magnitude slower than frost coarsening directly on a solid substrate and should also minimize its adhesive strength to the surface.

Ice nucleation from vapor presents a variety of challenges across a wide range of industries and applications including refrigeration, transportation, and energy generation. However, a rational comprehensive approach to fabricating intrinsically icephobic surfaces for frost formation-both from water condensation (followed by freezing) and in particular from desublimation (direct growth of ice crystals from vapor)-remains elusive. Here, guided by nucleation physics, we investigate the effect of material composition and surface texturing (atomically smooth to nanorough) on the nucleation and growth mechanism of frost for a range of conditions within the sublimation domain (0 °C to -55 °C; partial water vapor pressures 6 to 0.02 mbar). Surprisingly, we observe that on silicon at very cold temperatures-below the homogeneous ice solidification nucleation limit (<-46 °C)-desublimation does not become the favorable pathway to frosting. Furthermore, we show that surface nanoroughness makes frost formation on silicon more probable. We experimentally demonstrate at temperatures between -48 °C and -55 °C that nanotexture with radii of curvature within 1 order of magnitude of the critical radius of nucleation favors frost growth, facilitated by capillary condensation, consistent with Kelvin's equation. Our findings show that such nanoscale surface morphology imposed by design to impart desired functionalities-such as superhydrophobicity-or from defects can be highly detrimental for frost icephobicity at low temperatures and water vapor partial pressures (<0.05 mbar). Our work contributes to the fundamental understanding of phase transitions well within the equilibrium sublimation domain and has implications for applications such as travel, power generation, and refrigeration.

Inhibiting ice accumulation on surfaces is an energy-intensive task and is of significant importance in nature and technology where it has found applications in windshields, automobiles, aviation, renewable energy generation, and infrastructure. Existing methods rely on on-site electrical heat generation, chemicals, or mechanical removal, with drawbacks ranging from financial costs to disruptive technical interventions and environmental incompatibility. Here we focus on applications where surface transparency is desirable and propose metasurfaces with embedded plasmonically enhanced light absorption heating, using ultrathin hybrid metal-dielectric coatings, as a passive, viable approach for de-icing and anti-icing, in which the sole heat source is renewable solar energy. The balancing of transparency and absorption is achieved with rationally nanoengineered coatings consisting of gold nanoparticle inclusions in a dielectric (titanium dioxide), concentrating broadband absorbed solar energy into a small volume. This causes a > 10 °C temperature increase with respect to ambient at the air-solid interface, where ice is most likely to form, delaying freezing, reducing ice adhesion, when it occurs, to negligible levels (de-icing) and inhibiting frost formation (anti-icing). Our results illustrate an effective unexplored pathway toward environmentally compatible, solar-energy-driven icephobicity, enabled by respectively tailored plasmonic metasurfaces, with the ability to design the balance of transparency and light absorption.

Ice accretion presents a severe risk for human safety. Although great efforts have been made for developing icephobic surfaces (the surface with an ice adhesion strength below 100 kPa), expanding the lifetime of state-of-the-art icephobic surfaces still remains a critical unsolved issue. Herein, a novel icephobic material is designed by integrating an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) into an autonomous self-healing elastomer, which is applied in anti-icing for enhancing the mechanical durability. The molecular structure, surface morphology, mechanical properties, and durable icephobicity of the material were studied. The creep behaviors of the new icephobic material, which were absent in most relevant studies on self-healing materials, were also investigated in this work. Significantly, the material showed great potentials for anti-icing applications with an ultralow ice adhesion strength of 6.0 ± 0.9 kPa, outperforming many other icephobic surfaces. The material also exhibited an extraordinary durability, showing a very low long-term ice adhesion strength of ∼12.2 kPa after 50 icing/deicing cycles. Most importantly, the material was able to exhibit a self-healing property from mechanical damages in a sufficiently short time, which shed light on the longevity of icephobic surfaces in practical applications.

Spontaneous removal of liquid, solidifying liquid and solid forms of matter from surfaces, is of significant importance in nature and technology, where it finds applications ranging from self-cleaning to icephobicity and to condensation systems. However, it is a great challenge to understand fundamentally the complex interaction of rapidly solidifying, typically supercooled, droplets with surfaces, and to harvest benefit from it for the design of intrinsically icephobic materials. Here we report and explain an ice removal mechanism that manifests itself simultaneously with freezing, driving gradual self-dislodging of droplets cooled via evaporation and sublimation (low environmental pressure) or convection (atmospheric pressure) from substrates. The key to successful self-dislodging is that the freezing at the droplet free surface and the droplet contact area with the substrate do not occur simultaneously: The frozen phase boundary moves inward from the droplet free surface toward the droplet-substrate interface, which remains liquid throughout most of the process and freezes last. We observe experimentally, and validate theoretically, that the inward motion of the phase boundary near the substrate drives a gradual reduction in droplet-substrate contact. Concurrently, the droplet lifts from the substrate due to its incompressibility, density differences, and the asymmetric freezing dynamics with inward solidification causing not fully frozen mass to be displaced toward the unsolidified droplet-substrate interface. Depending on surface topography and wetting conditions, we find that this can lead to full dislodging of the ice droplet from a variety of engineered substrates, rendering the latter ice-free., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Ice accretion has a negative impact on critical infrastructure, as well as a range of commercial and residential activities. Icephobic surfaces are defined by an ice adhesion strength τice < 100 kPa. However, the passive removal of ice requires much lower values of τice, such as on airplane wings or power lines (τice < 20 kPa). Such low τice values are scarcely reported, and robust coatings that maintain these low values have not been reported previously. We show that, irrespective of material chemistry, by tailoring the cross-link density of different elastomeric coatings and by enabling interfacial slippage, it is possible to systematically design coatings with extremely low ice adhesion (τice < 0.2 kPa). These newfound mechanisms allow for the rational design of icephobic coatings with virtually any desired ice adhesion strength. By using these mechanisms, we fabricate extremely durable coatings that maintain τice < 10 kPa after severe mechanical abrasion, acid/base exposure, 100 icing/deicing cycles, thermal cycling, accelerated corrosion, and exposure to Michigan wintery conditions over several months.

Sol-gel coatings with different roughness and surface energy were prepared on glass substrates. Methyl triethoxysilane (MTEOS), 3-Glycidyloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GLYMO) and fluoroalkylsilane (FAS) were used to obtain a mechanically robust icephobic coating. Different amount of hydrophobic silica nano particles was added as fillers to introduce different roughness and surface energy to the coatings. The microstructure, roughness, and surface energy, together with elemental information and surface chemical state, were investigated at room temperature. The contact angle and sliding angle were measured at different temperatures to correlate the wetting behavior at low temperature with the anti-icing performance. The ice adhesion shear strength was measured inside an ice chamber using a self-designed tester. The factors influencing the ice adhesion were discussed, and the optimum anti-icing performance found in the series of coatings. It was found that lower surface energy leads to lower ice adhesion regardless of the roughness, while the roughness plays a more complicated role. The wetting behavior of the droplet on surface changes as temperature decreases. The anti-icing performance is closely related to the antiwetting property of the surfaces at subzero temperatures.

Hierarchical superhydrophobic and icephobic films on the aluminum substrates were prepared via a facile hydrothermal reaction method at 60°C after the simple chemical modification. The results from the scanning electron microscopy observations and the X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that the micro/nanoscale hierarchical surfaces composed of bayerite microrods and Zn-Al LDH nanowalls structures. The static contact angle (CA) and sliding angle (SA) for the prepared surfaces were observed about 167.3° and 3°, respectively. Icing behavior of the surfaces was investigated in -10°C environment. Ice adhesion was evaluated by spinning the samples at constantly increasing speed until ice delaminated. The experimental observations on the freezing time of the different surfaces demonstrated well that such prepared films exhibited the satisfactory icephobicity., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc.
