The recovery of spent lithium-ion batteries by traditional acid leaching is limited by serious pollution, complicated technology, and the low purity of Li 2 CO 3 . To address the problems of the traditional acid leaching process and increasing demand for decarbonization, a technique for the selective carbonation leaching of Li and the recovery of battery-grade Li 2 CO 3 by a simple concentration precipitation process without acids or bases was developed. The coupling of CO 2 and reducing agents could effectively promote the precipitation of MCO 3 (M=Ni/Co/Mn) and the selective leaching of Li by decreasing the reducing capability needed for transition metals and decreasing the pH of the solution. The optimal selective leaching process of Li was obtained under 1 MPa CO 2 with 20 g/L Na 2 S 2 O 3 at an L/S ratio of 30 mL/g for 1.5 h. FT-IR, XRD, ICP-MS and other methods were used to reveal the multiphase interfacial reaction mechanism of the carbonation reduction of layered cathode materials, which indicated that the reducing agent Na 2 S 2 O 3 could promote lattice distortion of the cathode materials and effective separation of Li. Jarosite waste is a by-product generated from iron removal process in the jarosite process, which typically contains valuable metals including zinc, nickel, cobalt, silver, indium, and lead. Due to the large amount of jarosite and the less efficient and costly methods of recovering residual metals, it is mainly disposed by landfills. However, leachate generated from the landfills can release high concentrations of heavy metals, which contaminate nearby water resources and pose environmental and health risks. In this review, the environmental and resource properties of jarosite waste were briefly summarized. Then those pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and biological methods were discussed. In this review, considering the polymetallic properties and the low content of valuable metal elements of the jarosite waste, it is indicated that these processes had their own benefits and drawbacks such as overall yield, economic and technical constraints, and the necessity for combined processes to recycle multiple metal ions from jarosite wastes. Finally, this paper provided a critical and systematic review of studies on the novel green recycling technology for metals and material preparation based on the jarosite waste. Microbial fuel cells (MFC) are emerging energy-efficient systems for copper (Cu) electrowinning from waste streams by coupling it with anodic oxidation of organics in wastewater. However, there is a lack of research examining scalable electrocatalysts for Cu electrowinning at low cathodic overpotentials in highly saline catholytes often found in e-waste leachates. The challenge of developing resilient anodic biofilms that withstand the antagonistic effects of ions migrating from catholytes in saline MFC also needs to be addressed. In this study, polypyrrole (PPy) cathodic electrocatalysts were developed and coupled with a robust halophilic anodic biofilm in MFC to improve the kinetics of Cu electrowinning from acidic chloride-based catholytes. Electrochemical characterisation of these cathodes revealed shuttling of electrons by redox-active PPy via the formation of intermediate Cu + -complexes as an energy-efficient pathway for producing metallic Cu. High power densities ranging from 0.63 ± 0.17 to 0.73 ± 0.05 W m -2 were achieved with undoped-PPy and phytic acid doped-PPy cathodes with simultaneous recovery of ∼97% Cu. These electrocatalysts also exhibited low charge transfer resistance (3-8 mΩ m 2 ) that met the requisites for scalable cathodes in MFC. However, a decrease in the efficiency of PPy cathodes was observed over 5 d due to competing reactions at their interfaces, including re-oxidation of deposited Cu and cathodic corrosion, with further studies suggested to enhance their corrosion resistance. Heap leaching with a cyanide solution is used for processing low-grade ores; however, owing to the chemical, mineralogical, and physical characteristics of ores and their particle size distribution, extraction efficiencies are often low. This study investigated the effects of sodium acetate addition on gold extraction from Akshoky deposit ores under laboratory and semi-pilot laboratory test conditions. The gold-bearing ore used in this study had average gold and silver contents of 1.32 and 3.27 g/t, respectively. The chemical composition of the ore was as follows (wt%): copper: 0.0185, nickel: 0.0090, cobalt: 0.0025, zinc: 0.0470, lead: 0.0095, total iron: 4.10, calcium oxide: 3.08, magnesium oxide: 1.10, sodium oxide: 1.40, potassium oxide: 0.82, silicon oxide: 64.22, aluminum oxide: 13.37, arsenic: 0.023, antimony: 0.0024, total sulfur: 0.24, sulfate sulfur: 0.040, and sulfide sulfur: 0.20. Gold in the ore occurs in different forms: free/native form grains (82 %), covered with films (3.28 %), associated with sulfides (6.56 %), and in fine-grained form (8.20 %). Laboratory tests showed that gold dissolution from ground ore by a cyanide solution without sodium acetate addition was 83.08 %. However, with sodium acetate addition (0.1; 0.5; 1.0 kg/t), it increased to 84.38-86.61 %. Semi-pilot laboratory tests under heap-leaching conditions confirmed the positive effects of sodium acetate. The economic advantages of H 2 SO 4 make it the acid of choice for the hydrometallurgical treatment of waste lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, to facilitate the full dissolution of the higher valency metal oxides present in the cathode black mass, a suitable reducing agent is required. Herein, the application of industrial black liquor (BL) obtained from the Kraft pulping for papermaking is investigated as a renewable reducing agent for the enhanced leaching of transition metals from LIB powder with H 2 SO 4 . The addition of acidified BL to H 2 SO 4 significantly improved the leaching efficiency for a range of LIB cathode chemistries, with the strongest effect observed for manganese-rich active material. Focusing on NMC 111 (LiMn x Co y Ni z O 2 ) material, a linear correlation between the BL concentration and the leaching yield of Mn was obtained, with the best overall leaching efficiencies being achieved for 2.0 mol L -1 H 2 SO 4 and 50 vol % of BL at 353 K. A quasi-total degradation of oxygenated and aromatic groups from the BL during NMC 111 dissolution was observed after leaching, suggesting that these chemical groups are essential for LIB reduction. The contradiction between the activity and stability of metal anodes exists extensively, especially in acid electrooxidation under industrial-level current density. Although the anode modification enhanced the initial activity of anodes, its long-term activity is limited by anode slime accumulation. Herein, a synergistic strategy, coupling the solute environment with the phase control of anodes, is proposed to achieve the trade-off between activity and stability of Pb-based anodes in concentrated sulfuric acid electrolysis. Non-exogenous Mn 2+ motivated a series of positive behaviours of reactive-oxygen-species capture, anode reconstruction and corrosion-dependent activity alleviation. The synergistic effects, which are crystal phase-dependent, mainly benefit from the continuous self-healing ability of the specific crystal phase of MnO 2 on the anodes by the coexisted Mn 2+ . Compared with Mn 2+ /α-MnO 2 , Mn 2+ /γ-MnO 2 exhibited outperformed activity and stability in boosting oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and reducing hazardous pollutants, which resulted from the energy difference in the rate-determining step of OER and in the selectivity priority of Mn 2+ /MnO 2 oxidation pathway. Interestingly, the pre-coated γ-MnO 2 on the anode also presents excellent inheritance, guaranteeing the unchanged crystal phase of MnO 2 and the high performance in ultra-low hazardous slime generation in subsequent Mn 2+ oxidation. The sustainability of Mn 2+ /γ-MnO 2 was proved in the operating hydrometallurgy conditions on Pb-based anodes. Recycling e-waste is seen as a sustainable alternative to compensate for the limited natural rare earth elements (REEs) resources and the difficulty of accessing these resources. Recycling facilitates the recovery of valuable products and minimizes emissions during their transportation. Numerous studies have been reported on e-waste recycling using various techniques, including thermo-, hydro- and biometallurgical approaches. However, each approach still has technical, economic, social, or environmental limitations. This review highlights the potential of recycling e-waste, including outlining the current unutilized potential of REE recycling from different e-waste components. An in-depth analysis of e-waste generation on a global scale and Australian scenario, along with various hazardous impacts on ecosystem and human health, is reported. In addition, a comprehensive summary of various metal recovery processes and their merits and demerits is also presented. Lifecycle analysis for recovering REEs from e-waste indicate a positive environmental impact when compared to REEs produced from virgin sources. In addition, recovering REEs form secondary sources eliminated ca. 1.5 times radioactive waste, as seen in production from primary sources scenario. The contamination of creek sediments near industrially nuclear dominated site presents significant environmental challenges, particularly in identifying and quantifying potentially toxic metal (loid)s (PTMs). This study aims to measure the extent of contamination and apportion related sources for nine PTMs in alpine creek sediments near a typical uranium tailing dam from China, including strontium (Sr), rubidium (Rb), manganese (Mn), lithium (Li), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), vanadium (V), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), using multivariate statistical approach and Sr isotopic compositions. The results show varying degrees of contamination in the sediments for some PTMs, i.e., Sr (16.1-39.6 mg/kg), Rb (171-675 mg/kg), Mn (224-2520 mg/kg), Li (11.6-78.8 mg/kg), Cd (0.31-1.38 mg/kg), and Zn (37.1-176 mg/kg). Multivariate statistical analyses indicate that Sr, Rb, Li, and Mn originated from the uranium tailing dam, while Cd and Zn were associated with abandoned agricultural activities, and Ni, Cu, and V were primarily linked to natural bedrock weathering. The Sr isotope fingerprint technique further suggests that 48.22-73.84% of Sr and associated PTMs in the sediments potentially derived from the uranium tailing dam. The combined use of multivariate statistical analysis and Sr isotopic fingerprint technique in alpine creek sediments enables more reliable insights into PTMs-induced pollution scenarios. E-waste is the fastest growing solid waste in the world. Each year, over 50 million tonnes of e-waste are produced, with its rate increasing by 3-5 % annually. Currently, only 17 % of e-waste is properly recycled, leaving the majority managed unsustainably, thereby causing detrimental environmental and economic effects. Cleaner e-waste management technologies are essential to address this urgent and rapidly expanding issue. Precious metals within e-waste significantly contribute to recycling revenues. In this paper, we review state-of-the-art technologies for sustainable recycling and upcycling of these metals from e-waste, including cleaner extractive metallurgy, solution purification technologies, and direct synthesis of green nanomaterials. Vanadium (V) is a critically important element in many industries. A widely used recovery process is a combination of roasting and leaching. However, roasting is an energy-intensive stage. Generally, basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag is high in calcium (Ca) but low in V. Ca content and its chemical nature can prevent V leaching. This study presents a potential two-stage leaching process for Ca and V from BOF slag. The method is environmentally friendly using low temperatures and enabling leachate recycling. Furthermore, the utilisation rate of the slag can be higher due to Ca recovery. Ca is first leached using ammonium nitrate and nitric acid solution. The V-containing residue is directed to the second stage, where V is leached using ammonium carbonate ((NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 ). Ca leaching efficiency was 71% achieved with a low temperature (40°C) and in 20 min. > 99% of the dissolved element was Ca. Increasing the total nitrate concentration increased the leaching efficiency. Reducing the L/S ratio improved selectivity. The solid material was analysed after the leaching stages and a clear change was observed after the Ca-stage. The V leaching efficiency was 50%. > 88% of dissolved element was V (L/S 8, [(NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 ] 200 g/L, 60°C, and 60 min). Increasing [(NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 ] and L/S ratio slightly improved the leaching efficiency but decreased selectivity. The studied process implements circular economy principles and has been developed for side streams with low V concentrations. However, further optimisation and developments are required regarding the effectiveness of the process.

Hydrometallurgy recycling of heavy metals from electroplating sludge is of hot spot in recent decades. Such recycling was tedious in the separation of impure Fe/Al prior to heavy metals from acid leachate after sludge dissolution. Herein, a facile hydrothermal route was developed to separate Fe/Al from Cu-bearing leachate. The results showed that when the leachate was directly hydrothermally treated at 160 °C in the presence of nitrate and ethanol, Al/Cu were stable in the leachate, but nearly 100% Fe was removed as hematite nanoparticles. With the addition of chloridion, the removal efficiencies of Fe/Al/Cu did not change apparently, but the corresponding precipitate was akageneite, not hematite. By replacing chloridion with sulfate, nearly 100% Fe and 98.6% Al were separated as natrojarosite/natroalunite block, while the Cu loss was only 1.7%. However, with the supplementary of phosphate, the Fe/Al removal achieved nearly 100%, but the Cu removal also achieved by 92.6%. The thermodynamic analysis showed that Cu was precipitated rapidly via the phosphate/Cu oxyhydroxide route by adding phosphate but removed slightly via the coordination route on the Fe/Al precipitates with the addition of nitrate, chloridion, and sulfate. In summary, Fe was effectively separated as hematite, akageneite, natrojarosite, and phosphate halite, in the presence of nitrate, chloridion, sulfate, and phosphate, separately. But the removal of Al as natroalunite and AlPO 4 only started by adding sulfate and phosphate, respectively. Tantalite ore is the main source of the metals niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta). Today, the needs for these economic and irreplaceable Nb, and Ta metals are becoming imperative for the technological world, to meet the demand, a lot of research is needed to ore reserves, extraction methodology and simplified refining processes should be in plethora. This study focuses on the Ethiopian tantalite ore located south of the Neoproterozoic Adola belt of the rare element Kenticha pegmatite deposit (global source of tantalite). Successive beneficiation of pegmatite ore results in a highest dissolution of 60.83 wt% of Ta 2 O 5 with 4.58 wt% of Nb 2 O 5 including the removal of U, Th, Ti, Fe and Si, resulting in a percentage low weight, which allows transporting ore concentrates. The concentrated ore is leached with a mixture of binary acids HF and H 2 SO 4 with 6:1 ratio at temperatures from 100 to 400 °C. The filtered solution was extracted with MIBK then, precipitated with ammonium solution. The hydrometallurgy of Nb and Ta oxides is affected by leaching temperature and the presence of radioactive oxides of U and Th. Elemental analysis and surface topography were studied using SEM/EDS, revealing the highest percentage composition of Nb and Ta oxides at 200 °C of leaching temperature. Comparatively, the compositions of U and Th showed higher amounts at the leaching temperatures of 150 and 200 °C, and when the temperature reached about 350 and 400 °C, the percentage composition of U and Th became very low, the economic metals Nb and Ta were completely leached. The stability of the precipitated samples was analyzed using TGA-DTA and found to be thermally stable, and not contain significant moisture at each temperature studied. The paper presents the possibility of recovering metals from printed circuit boards (PCBs) of spent mobile phones using the hydrometallurgical method. Two-stage leaching of Cu(II), Fe(III), Sn(IV), Zn(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) with H 2 SO 4 (2 and 5 M) and HNO 3 (2 M) with the addition of H 2 O 2 (10 and 30%) and O 3 (9 or 15 g/h) was conducted at various process conditions (temperature-313, 333 and 353 K, time-60, 120, 240, 300 min, type and concentration of leaching agent, type and concentration of oxidant, solid-liquid ratio (S/L)), allowing for a high or total metals leaching rate. The use of two leaching stages allows for the preservation of selectivity, separation and recovery of metals: in the first stage of Fe(III), Sn(IV) and in the second stage of the remaining tested metal ions, i.e., Cu(II), Zn(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II). Removing Fe from the tested PCBs' material at the beginning of the process eliminates the need to use magnetic methods, the purpose of which is to separate magnetic metal particles (ferrous) from non-magnetic (non-ferrous) particles; these procedures involve high operating costs. Since the leaching of Cu(II) ions with sulfuric(VI) acid practically does not occur (less than 1%), this allows for almost complete transfer of these ions into the solution in the second stage of leaching. Moreover, to speed up the process and not generate too many waste solutions, oxidants in the form of hydrogen peroxide and ozone were used. The best degree of leaching of all tested metal ions was obtained when 2 M sulfuric(VI) acid at 353 K was used in the 1st research stage, and 2 M nitric(V) acid and 9 g/h O 3 at 298 K in the 2nd stage of leaching, which allowed it to be totally leached 100% of Fe(III), Cu(II), Sn(IV), Zn(II), Ni(II) and 90% Pb(II).

The metal resource crisis and the inherent need for a low-carbon circular economy have driven the rapid development of e-waste recycling technology. High-value waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) are an essential component of e-waste. However, WPCBs are considered hazardous to the ecosystem due to the presence of heavy metals and brominated organic polymers. Therefore, achieving the recycling of metals in WPCBs is not only a strategic requirement for building a green ecological civilization but also an essential guarantee for achieving a safe supply of mineral resources. This review systematically analyzes the hydrometallurgical technology of metals in WPCBs in recent years. Firstly, the different unit operations of pretreatment in the hydrometallurgical process, which contain disassembly, crushing, and pre-enrichment, were analyzed. Secondly, environmentally friendly hydrometallurgical leaching systems and high-value product regeneration technologies used in recent years to recover metals from WPCBs were evaluated. The leaching techniques, including cyanidation, halide, thiourea, and thiosulfate for precious metals, and inorganic acid, organic acid, and other leaching methods for base metals such as copper and nickel in WPCBs, were outlined, and the leaching performance and greenness of each leaching system were summarized and analyzed. Eventually, based on the advantages of each leaching system and the differences in chemical properties of metals in WPCBs, an integrated and multi-gradient green process for the recovery of WPCBs was proposed, which provides a sustainable pathway for the recovery of metals in WPCBs. Advanced high-tech applications for communication, renewable energy, and display, heavily rely on technology critical elements (TCEs) such as indium, gallium, and germanium. Ensuring their sustainable supply is a pressing concern due to their high economic value and supply risks in the European Union. Recovering these elements from end-of-life (EoL) products (electronic waste: e-waste) offers a potential solution to address TCEs shortages. The review highlights recent advances in pre-treatment and hydrometallurgical and biohydrometallurgical methods for indium, gallium, and germanium recovery from EoL products, including spent liquid crystal displays (LCDs), light emitting diodes (LEDs), photovoltaics (PVs), and optical fibers (OFs). Leaching methods, including strong mineral and organic acids, and bioleaching, achieve over 95% indium recovery from spent LCDs. Recovery methods emphasize solvent extraction, chemical precipitation, and cementation. However, challenges persist in separating indium from other non-target elements like Al, Fe, Zn, and Sn. Promising purification involves solid-phase extraction, electrochemical separation, and supercritical fluid extraction. Gallium recovery from spent GaN and GaAs LEDs achieves 99% yield via leaching with HCl after annealing and HNO 3 , respectively. Sustainable gallium purification techniques include solvent extraction, ionic liquid extraction, and nanofiltration. Indium and gallium recovery from spent CIGS PVs achieves over 90% extraction yields via H 2 SO 4 with citric acid-H 2 O 2 and alkali. Although bioleaching is slower than chemical leaching (several days versus several hours), indirect bioleaching shows potential, achieving 70% gallium extraction yield. Solvent extraction and electrolysis exhibit promise for pure gallium recovery. HF or alkali roasting leaches germanium with a high yield of 98% from spent OFs. Solvent extraction achieves over 90% germanium recovery with minimal silicon co-extraction. Solid-phase extraction offers selective germanium recovery. With the shortage of high-quality raw materials and increasingly strict environmental regulations, the recovery of metals from copper slag and pyrolusite has become a research hotspot. A novel method for simultaneously extracting Mn and Fe from pyrolusite and copper slag has been proposed. Under the optimal conditions (Copper slag / Pyrolusite = 2, H 2 SO 4  = 2 M, liquid-solid ratio = 10, T = 90 ℃, holding time = 60 min), the leaching efficiencies of Mn and Fe can reach 98.28% and 99.04%, respectively. In addition, the treated residue containing 60.04 wt% SiO 2 can be used as a raw building material. Through chemical kinetics and mineralogical transformation analyses, Fe 2 SiO 4 in copper slag decomposes to release Fe 2+ , which can reduce and leach Mn from pyrolusite. Lithium (Li)-based batteries are gradually evolving from the liquid to the solid state in terms of safety and energy density, where all solid-state Li-metal batteries (ASSLMBs) are considered the most promising candidates. This is demonstrated by the Bluecar electric vehicle produced by the Bolloré Group, which is utilized in car-sharing services in several cities worldwide. Despite impressive progress in the development of ASSLMBs, their avenues for recycling them remain underexplored, and combined with the current explosion of spent Li-ion batteries, they should attract widespread interest from academia and industry. Here, the potential challenges of recycling ASSLMBs as compared to Li-ion batteries are analyzed and the current progress and prospects for recycling ASSLMBs are summarized and analyzed. Aluminum is an important lightweight and high-value metal that is widely used in the transportation, construction, and military industries. China is the largest producer of Al in the world, and vast quantities of Al dross (ash) are generated and stored every year. Aluminum dross contains fluoride and heavy metals, and easily reacts with water and acid to produce stimulating, toxic, and explosive gases. Owing to a lack of developed technologies, most of this dross cannot be safely treated, resulting in a waste of resources and serious environmental and ecological risks. This review briefly describes the distribution and proportions of bauxite deposits in China, the Al extraction process, and the hazardous solid waste that is generated. It also discusses the comprehensive treatments for Al dross, including the hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy recovery processes, and reuse of Al, Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , and chloride salts as a summarized comparison of their advantages and disadvantages. In particular, this review focuses on the efforts to analyze the relationship between existing processes and the attempts to establish a comprehensive technology to treat Al dross. Electronic waste recycling is a strategy that contributes to implement a circular economy model which include reuse, component and raw material recovery and minimum final deposition. Given the importance of reincorporating the components of electronic devices into the productive chain and a correct recovery for some hazardous metals such as lead contained in such residues. This study is focused on the effect of maximum available content (MAC) of metal, sulfuric acid initial concentration, agitation velocity, and oxidising agent on the recovery of copper, lead and iron from electronic waste through acid leaching. A solid-state characterization before and after treatment and electrochemical analysis was carried out to analyse MCA effects and surface chemistry. It was found that sub-millimetric particles show a better available extraction percentage in case of copper and iron, being opposite for lead. Presence of hydrogen peroxide enhance the extraction efficiency, however, this cause iron and lead precipitation, therefore it is inefficient for metals recovery as well as for reagent consumption. A hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of gold and silver from waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) was experimentally verified and tested at pilot scale. The process comprises four sequential leaching stages; the first two based on HCl, correspond to base metals (e.g. Sn, Cu) removal, while the third is based on HNO 3 for Ag leaching and the final on aqua regia for Au leaching. After base metals leaching, the solid residue, enriched in silver and gold about 5 times, contained silver almost quantitively as insoluble AgCl and significant losses (Ag loss <8%) were avoided. The necessary reduction of Ag in the solid phase was achieved with a solution of 0.5 M N 2 H 4 and 3 M NaOH, at 80 °C and S/L ratio 10%. Leaching of silver by 4 M HNO 3 was followed by its recovery from nitrate solution by 0.08 Μ N 2 H 4 at ambient temperature with an efficiency of 83%. Gold was leached by aqua regia and quantitively recovered by 0.13 M N 2 H 4 at ambient temperature. Wastewater resulting from the process, rich in nitrate (5 g/L) and chloride (50 g/L), was treated by an effective and novel biological denitrification system tolerating metals at ppm level, to comply with zero nitrate and residual metals discharge guidelines. The overall process requires low reagents and energy input and has zero discharge for liquid effluents. Informal recycling activities of waste printed circuit boards, such as pyrolysis and landfilling, cause severe environmental harm to society. Pyrolysis of resin and polymer fraction leads to the generation of toxic effluents, and landfilling causes the leaching of heavy metals into the groundwater. A sustainable and eco-friendly way to recover base and precious elements will be an economically attractive option. Current research studied the cradle-to-gate environmental impacts of the sequential recovery of copper and gold through delamination, leaching, solvent extraction, electrowinning and cementation from waste printed circuit boards with the help of life cycle assessment.GaBi software was utilized to assess environmental impacts such as global warming, abiotic depletion (fossil), acidification potential and human toxicity potential during the process. Inventory data was collected by conducting several experiments and from optimizing parameters for recycling and separating 4.53 g of copper and 2.25 mg of gold from 16 g of component-free waste printed circuit boards. Results indicate that the chemical pre-treatment or delamination process for separating metal clads from the non-metallic fraction is primarily involved in the impact category. The higher impact during delamination is due to electricity consumption. The proposed study also corroborates the industrial viability of recycling valuable metals from waste printed circuit boards to minimize the environmental impacts. Jarosite is a residue that is generated as a by-product during zinc extraction, and it consists of various types of heavy metal (loid)s such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, iron, lead, mercury and silver. Due to the huge jarosite turn-over rate, and less efficient and expensive residual metal extraction processes, the zinc-producing industries dispose this waste in landfills. However, the leachate generated from such landfills contains a high concentration of heavy metal (loid)s that could contaminate the nearby water resources and cause environmental concern and human health risk. Various thermo-chemical and biological processes have been developed for the recovery of heavy metals from such waste. In this review, we have discussed all those pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, and biological. Those studies were critically reviewed and compared on the basis of their techno-economic differences. The review indicated that these processes have their own benefits and drawbacks such as overall yield, economic and technical constraints, and the need for more than one process to mobilize multiple metal ions from jarosite. The depletion of the ore reserves in the world necessitates the search for secondary sources such as waste products (tailings and slag). The treatment and cleaning up of such secondary sources also has a positive impact on the environment. A smelter in Namibia we examined had historic slag which accumulated over decades of its operating life, thus posing the challenge of how best to collect representative samples to evaluate and propose viable methods of recovering contained metals. In this study, analytical and mineralogical characterization of the slag was performed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis, atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS), ICP-OES, scanning electron microscopy energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis, and optical microscopy analysis. The chemical analyses showed that the metal values contained in the slag were mainly copper, lead, and zinc whose average contents were approximately 0.35% Cu, 3% Pb, and 5.5% Zn. About 10.5% Fe was also contained in the slag. Germanium was detected by scanning electron microscopy, but was however below detection limits of the chemical analysis equipment used. Based on the results, approximate conditions under which the different slag phases were formed were estimated and the recovery routes for the various metals were proposed. Analysis by both optical and scanning electron microscopy revealed that Zn and Fe occurred mainly in association with O as oxides, while Cu and Pb were mainly associated with S as sulphides. The slag consisted of three different phases, namely the silicate phase (slag), metallic phase and the sulphide phases. The phases in the slag were mainly silicate phases as well as metallic and sulphide phases. It was observed that the metallic and sulphide phases were dominant in the finer size fractions (-75 µm) whereas the sulphide phase was also present in the coarser size fractions (+300 µm). An important finding from the microscopy examination was that the sulphide phases were interstitial and could be liberated from the slag. This finding meant that liberation and subsequent concentration of the sulphide phases was feasible using conventional processing techniques.

A steady increase in end-of-life (EoL) polycrystalline silicon photovoltaic (c-Si PV) panels is necessitating the development of recycling technologies to guarantee sustainable environmental management and a circular economy. Herein, we propose a comprehensive EoL c-Si PV recycling strategy with an emphasis on selective silver (Ag) recovery. Primarily, a combination of physical and thermal treatment led to the isolation of PV cell fraction from the EoL PV module. Thereafter, a less-toxic, sulphuric acid-hydrogen peroxide (1 M H 2 SO 4 - H 2 O 2 1% (v/v %)) lixiviant was used for Ag leaching at 70 °C. A novel catalytic process using platinum-embedded activated carbon (Pt/AC) was used with only hydrogen gas and air to recover selectively and concentrate the Ag + from the synthetic PV cells leachate. Finally, pure metallic silver (Ag > 99.0 %) was obtained by the conventional electrowinning process. This study also proposes an explicit recovery process for Al, Cu, and Si. In addition, the Pt/AC catalytic process could efficiently recover Cu from the PV cells, similar to Ag. Following the complete recovery of Ag and Cu through Pt/AC, there is sufficient scope to isolate other metals like Al and Pb leaving behind crude Si wafers. There have been several strategies developed to increase the diversified supply of energy so that it can meet all of the future demands for energy. As a result, to ensure a healthy and sustainable energy future, it is imperative to warrant reliable and diverse energy supply sources if the "green energy economy" is to be realized. The purpose of developing and deploying clean energy technologies is to improve our overall energy security, reduce our carbon footprint, and ensure that the generation of energy is secure and reliable in the future, making sure that we can spur economic growth in the future. In this paper, advancements in alternative sources of energy sustainability and strategies will be examined to ensure there will be enough fuel to supply all the future demands for energy. Several emerging clean energy technologies rely heavily on the availability of materials that exhibit unique properties that are necessary for their development. This paper examines the roles that rare earth and other energy-critical materials play in securing a clean energy economy and the development of clean energy economies in general. For the development of these technologies to be successful and sustainable, a number of these energy-critical materials are at risk of becoming unavailable. This is due to their limited availability, disruptions in supply, and a lack of suitable resources for their development. The paper describes cementation as a suitable method applied in the refining of EAFD leachates in order to obtain required purity of ZnO for specific industrial application. For study of cementation conditions, the leachate from alkaline leaching with (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 was used. The leachates contained a high amount of zinc (8000-12,000 µg/mL) and a low content of impurities such as iron, lead, copper, chromium and manganese in the range of 1-21 µg/mL. Cementation conditions were predicted by thermodynamic study, theoretically confirming the viability of the proposed experiments at the considered pH = 8-9. Cementation experiments were carried out using powdered zinc and aluminium (5 g/L) as cementation agents in the first phase separately. To increase the cementation efficiency, their combination was used (2.5:2.5 g/L or 5:5 g/L) at temperatures of 20, 40, 60 and 80 °C for 30 min. The optimum cementation conditions were established as: Zn:Al = 5:5 g/L, 60 °C. Under the given conditions, 100% of Fe, Cu, Pb and Mn were removed from the leachate. The ZnO with the maximum purity of 96.67% was obtained by crystallization of cemented leachate at 105 °C, followed by calcination at 900 °C for 4 h. ZnO with such a purity is suitable for use in the electrical or rubber industries.

The significant increase in lithium batteries consumption produces a significant quantity of discarded lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). On the one hand, the shortage of high-grade ores leads to the necessity of processing low-grade ores, which contain a low percentage of valuable metals in comparison to the discarded LIBs that contain a high percentage of these metals, which enhances the processing of the discarded LIBs. On the other hand, the processing of discarded LIBs reduces the negative environmental effects that result from their storage and the harmful elements contained in their composition. Hence, the current study aims at developing cost-effective and ecofriendly technology for cobalt and lithium metal ion recovery based on discarded LIBs. A novel synthesized solid-phase adsorbent (TZAB) was utilized for the selective removal of cobalt from synthetic solutions and spent LIBs. The synthesized TZAB adsorbent was characterized by using 13C-NMR, GC-MS, FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and TGA. The factors affecting the adsorption of cobalt and lithium ions from synthetic solutions and spent LIBs, including the sorbent dose, pH, contact time, temperature, and cobalt concentration were investigated. The conditions surrounding the recovery of cobalt and lithium from processing discarded LIBs, were investigated to optimize the maximum recovery. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models were used to study the kinetics of the adsorption process. The obtained results showed that high-purity CoC 2 O 4 and Li 3 PO 4 were obtained with a purity of 95% and 98.3% and a percent recovery of 93.48% and 95.76%, respectively. The maximum recovery of Co(II) from synthetic solutions was obtained at C 0 = 500 mg·L -1 , dose of 0.08 g, pH 7.5, T = 25 °C, and reaction time = 90 min. The collected data from Langmuir's isotherm and the adsorption processes of Co agree with the data predicted by the D-R isotherm models, which shows that the adsorption of Co(II) onto the TZAB seems to be chemisorption, and the results agree with the Langmuir and D-R isotherm models.

This paper provides an overview of the current state of the field in spent portable lithium battery recycling at both the research and industrial scales. The possibilities of spent portable lithium battery processing involving pre-treatment (manual dismantling, discharging, thermal and mechanical-physical pre-treatment), pyrometallurgical processes (smelting, roasting), hydrometallurgical processes (leaching followed by recovery of metals from the leachates) and a combination of the above are described. The main metal-bearing component of interest is the active mass or cathode active material that is released and concentrated by mechanical-physical pre-treatment procedures. The metals of interest contained in the active mass include cobalt, lithium, manganese and nickel. In addition to these metals, aluminum, iron and other non-metallic materials, especially carbon, can also be obtained from the spent portable lithium batteries. The work describes a detailed analysis of the current state of research on spent lithium battery recycling. The paper presents the conditions, procedures, advantages and disadvantages of the techniques being developed. Moreover, a summary of existing industrial plants that are focused on spent lithium battery recycling is included in this paper.

pH adjustment was considered a simple step in the hydrometallurgy process, but its complicated operation was ignored in the past. In some industrial applications, the leachate pH was slowly adjusted by a diluted alkaline solution, with the defects of doubling the leachate volume and causing droplet hydrolysis/coagulation. Up to date, promising routes have been developed for rapid pH adjustment, especially in sealed high-temperature/pressure vessels. We propose a novel integrated model for the recovery of tantalum from tantalum-rich waste using a combination of hydrometallurgical and bio-metallurgical processes. To this end, leaching experiments with heterotrophs (Pseudomonas putida, Bacillus subtilis and Penicillium simplicissimum) were carried out. The heterotrophic fungal strain leached manganese with an efficiency of 98%; however, no tantalum was detected in the leachate. An unidentified species did mobilise 16% tantalum in 28 days in an experiment with non-sterile tantalum capacitor scrap. Attempts to cultivate isolate and identify these species failed. The results of a range of leaching trials resulted in an effective strategy for Ta recovery. A bulk sample of homogenised Ta capacitor scrap was first subjected to microbial leaching using Penicillium simplicissimum, which solubilised manganese and base metals. The residue was subjected to the second leach using 4 M HNO 3 . This effectively solubilised silver and other impurities. The residue collected after the second leach was pure tantalum in concentrated form. A one-step system based on mechanochemical activation and the use of grape skins (GS) was proposed to recover metals from lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) cathode waste. The effects of the ball-milling (BM) speed, BM time, and quantity of added GS on the metal leaching rate were explored. The spent lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) and its leaching residue before and after mechanochemistry were characterized by SEM, BET, PSD, XRD, FT-IR, and XPS analysis. Our study shows that mechanochemistry promotes the leaching efficiency of metals from LIBs battery cathode waste by changing the cathode material properties (that is, reducing the LCO particle size (12.126 μm ∼ 0.0928 μm), increasing the specific surface area (0.123 m 2 /g ∼ 15.957 m 2 /g), enhancing the hydrophilicity and surface free energy (57.44 mN/m 2  ∼ 66.18 mN/m 2 ), promoting the generation of mesoporous structures, refining grains, disrupting the crystal structure, and increasing the microscopic strain, while deflecting the binding energy of the metal ions). Graphite negative electrodes are unbeaten hitherto in lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) due to their unique chemical and physical properties. Thus, the increasing scarcity of graphite resources makes smart recycling or repurposing of discarded graphite particularly imperative. However, the current recycling techniques still need to be improved upon with urgency. Herein a facile and efficient hydrometallurgical process is reported to effectively regenerate aged (39.5 %, 75 % state-of-health, SOH) scrapped graphite (SG) from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries. Ultimately, the first cycle reversible capacity of SG1 (SOH = 39.5 %) improved from 266 mAh/g to 337 mAh/g while 330 mAh/g (98 %) remain after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. The reversible capacity for the first cycle of SG2 (SOH = 75 %) boosted from 335 mAh/g to 366 mAh/g with the capacity retention of 99.3 % after 100 cycles at 0.5 C, which is comparable with the benchmark commercial graphite. The regenerated graphites RG1 and RG2 exhibit excellent output characteristics even increasing the rate up to 4 C. This is the best rate level reported in the literature to date. Finally, the diffusion coefficient of Li ions during deintercalation and intercalation in the regenerated graphites have been measured by galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT), determining values 2 orders-of-magnitude higher than that of the spent counterparts. The rapidly increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide is causing high demand for production of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Tremendous efforts have been made to develop different components of LIBs in addition to design of battery pack architectures as well as manufacturing processes to make better batteries with affordable prices. Nonetheless, sustainable use of LIBs relies on the availability and cost of rare metals, which are naturally concentrated in a few countries. In addition, toxic electrolytes used in LIBs pose concerns on environmental impacts if LIBs are not handled properly after decommissioned from EVs. Therefore, it is paramount to realize effective utilization of spent LIBs, where their remaining capacities can be reused in less demanding applications. Finally, electrode materials and other valuable components of LIBs can be recovered via recycling, completing their circular life cycle. In this review, available options of LIBs after their retirement from EV applications, including battery second use, repair of electrode materials by direct regeneration, and material recovery by hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical processes are discussed. Waste from electrical and electronic equipment exponentially increased due to the innovation and the ever-increasing demand for electronic products in our life. The quantities of electronic waste (e-waste) produced are expected to reach 44.4 million metric tons over the next five years. Consequently, the global market for electronics recycling is expected to reach $65.8 billion by 2026. However, electronic waste management in developing countries is not appropriately handled, as only 17.4% has been collected and recycled. The inadequate electronic waste treatment causes significant environmental and health issues and a systematic depletion of natural resources in secondary material recycling and extracting valuable materials. Electronic waste contains numerous valuable materials that can be recovered and reused to create renewable energy technologies to overcome the shortage of raw materials and the adverse effects of using non-renewable energy resources. Several approaches were devoted to mitigate the impact of climate change. The cooperate social responsibilities supported integrating informal collection and recycling agencies into a well-structured management program. Moreover, the emission reductions resulting from recycling and proper management systems significantly impact climate change solutions. This emission reduction will create a channel in carbon market mechanisms by trading the CO 2 emission reductions. Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City is the most important urban region of Vietnam, Southeast Asia. In recent times, the quantity of electronic waste (e-waste) has been growing by several thousand tonnes every year. In this research, some of the existing and developing technologies being employed for the recycling of e-waste have been reviewed. Accordingly, the paper has been divided into three sections namely, e-waste treatment technologies in Ho Chi Minh City, the effect of heavy metals on human health and the extraction of metals from e-waste using pyrolysis, hydrometallurgy, bioleaching, mechanical, and air classifier methods, respectively. The extraction of precious metals and heavy metals such as Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg, Cu, Se, and Zn from e-waste can be hazardous to human health. For example, lead causes hazards to the central and peripheral nervous systems, blood system and kidneys; copper causes liver damage; chronic exposure to cadmium ends up causing lung cancer and kidney damage, and mercury can cause brain damage. A hydrometallurgical process is developed to lower the costs of copper production and thereby sustain the use of copper throughout the global transition to renewable energy technologies. The unique feature of the hydrometallurgical process is the reductive treatment of chalcopyrite, which is in contrast to the oxidative treatment more commonly pursued in the literature. Chalcopyrite reduction by chromium(II) ion is described for the first time and superior kinetics are shown. At high concentrate loadings of 39, 78, and 117 g L -1 , chalcopyrite reacted completely within minutes at room temperature and pressure. The XRD, SEM-EDS, and XPS measurements indicate that chalcopyrite reacts to form copper(I) chloride (CuCl). After the reductive treatment, the mineral products are leached by iron(III) sulfate to demonstrate the complete extraction of copper. A hydrometallurgical process is described for conversion of an aqueous solution of lithium chloride into an aqueous solution of lithium hydroxide via a chloride/hydroxide anion exchange reaction by solvent extraction. The organic phase comprises a quaternary ammonium chloride and a hydrophobic phenol in a diluent. The best results were observed for a mixture of the quaternary ammonium chloride Aliquat 336 and 2,6-di- tert -butylphenol (1:1 molar ratio) in the aliphatic diluent Shellsol D70. The solvent extraction process involves two steps. In the first step, the organic phase is contacted with an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The phenol is deprotonated, and a chloride ion is simultaneously transferred to the aqueous phase, leading to in situ formation of a quaternary ammonium phenolate in the organic phase. The organic phase, comprising the quaternary ammonium phenolate, is contacted in the second step with an aqueous lithium chloride solution. This contact converts the phenolate into the corresponding phenol by protonation with water extracted to the organic phase, followed by a transfer of hydroxide ions to the aqueous phase and chloride ions to the organic phase. As a result, the aqueous lithium chloride solution is transformed into a lithium hydroxide solution. The process has been demonstrated in continuous counter-current mode in mixer-settlers. Solid battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate was obtained from the aqueous solution by crystallization or by antisolvent precipitation with isopropanol. The process consumes no chemicals other than sodium hydroxide. Selective ion separations are increasingly needed to combat water scarcity, recover resources from wastewater, and enable the efficient recycling of electronics waste. Emulsion liquid membranes (ELMs) have received interest due to rapid kinetics, high selectivities, and low solvent requirements but are too unstable for industrial usage. We demonstrate that polymeric microcapsules can serve as robust, solvent-free mimics of ELMs. As a proof of concept, we incorporated the copper-selective ligand Lix 84-I in the walls of microcapsules formed from a commercial polystyrene- b -polybutadiene- b -polystyrene triblock polymer. The microcapsules were formed from a double-emulsion template, resulting in particles typically 20-120 μm in diameter that encapsulated even smaller droplets of a dilute (≤0.5 M) H 2 SO 4 solution. Batch experiments demonstrated facilitated-transport behavior, with equilibrium reached in as little as 10 min for microcapsules with 1% ligand, and with ∼15-fold selectivity for Cu 2+ over Ni 2+ . Furthermore, the microcapsules could be packed readily in columns for flow-through operation, thus enabling near-complete Cu 2+ removal in ∼2 min under certain conditions, recovery of Cu 2+ by flowing through fresh dilute H 2 SO 4 , and reuse for at least 10 cycles. The approach in this work can serve as a template for using selective ligands to enable robust and simple flow-through processes for a variety of selective ion separations.

The conventional hydrometallurgical methods for recycling refinery spent hydroprocessing catalysts are ineffective in simultaneously removing all metals (Ni, V, and Mo) in a single-stage operation. In this study, a novel octadentate chelating agent, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA-C 14 H 23 N 3 O 10 ), has been proposed for the first time to remove toxic metals (Ni, V, and Mo) in a single stage of operation from an industrial spent atmospheric residue desulfurization (ARDS) catalysts. It was discovered that the efficient formation of metal-DTPA complexes was attained under the optimum experimental conditions (60 °C, stirring - 150 rpm, S/L ration (w/v) of 2.5%, 7.5% DTPA, and medium pH-9) that resulted in the high removal of Mo (83.6%), V (81.3%) and Ni (64.1%) from the spent ARDS catalyst. Kinetic studies suggest that the leaching process followed a semi-empirical Avrami equation (R 2  > 0.92), which predicted that the diffusion control reaction controlled the leaching. Species distribution and ecological risk analysis of the remaining metals in the insoluble residue (mostly Al 2 O 3 ) indicated that the potential bioavailability of the remaining metals (except Ni) was significantly decreased, and residue poses a low ecological and contamination risk (individual contamination factor <1). Furthermore, the textural properties of the residue (BET surface area-103 m 2 /g and pore volume- 0.49 ml/g) were dramatically improved, suggesting that fresh hydroprocessing catalyst support can be synthesized using the leached residue. Leaching copper from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) by hydrometallurgy has always been a hot research topic. At atmospheric pressure, hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) was used as an oxidant to study the leaching behavior of copper from WPCBs in sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ) solution with ethylene glycol (EG). To elucidate the leaching mechanism of copper from WPCBs, the effect of various parameters on the leaching performance with or without EG was investigated. The results showed that the copper leaching process from WPCBs in the presence of EG was found to conform to the ash diffusion-controlled shrinking core model according to the kinetic curve and a activation energy of 18.38 kJ/mol. Moreover, the presence of EG strengthened the stability of H 2 O 2, improved dispersity and increased electrical activity of WPCBs, which enhanced the leaching of copper from WPCBs in the high leaching temperature (>323.15 K). As a result, apart from the fact that the optimal leaching concentration of H 2 O 2 was reduced by the addition of EG, the improved copper leaching efficiency from WPCBs was achieved by the addition of EG, as demonstrated by a maximum copper leaching efficiency of 98.01% and a maximum loss rate of 29.68%. Besides, the mineralogical and morphological properties of leaching residue validated the leaching results. In the present study, a leaner process for recovering zinc from spent alkaline batteries is studied at a laboratory scale. Such process is part of a diagram, under development, that aims at maximizing the value of all the battery components while reducing the costs of treatment and the environmental footprint involved in recycling this waste. It starts by a physical and selective pre-treatment stage that separates the anode from the remaining components followed by neutral leaching (three washing cycles at room temperature, S/L ratio of 1/5 (w/v), magnetic stirring for 15 min and settling during 45 min), acid leaching of the washed solid (4 mol/L of sulphuric acid, S/L ratio of 1/3 (w/v), 120 min at room temperature under magnetic stirring) and, finally, electrowinning of zinc from the pregnant leach solution (100 mA/cm 2 , 120 min under slow magnetic stirring). By leaching the anode alone, it is possible to obtain a solution rich in zinc (86 g/L), with very low concentration of other metals (<0.08 g/L). Such solution was adequate for zinc electrowinning, allowing an average recovery rate of 58%, without applying any purification stages, at the same time regenerating sulphuric acid for its recirculation. This paper presents Cr(III) removal from nickel sulfate waste solutions as a pretreatment step for the modification of hydrogen storage alloys. Adsorption with two cation exchange resins, Dowex G26 (strongly acidic) and MAC-3 (weakly acidic), and precipitation with various solutions were chosen as simple operations for Cr(III) removal from waste solutions. The adsorption of Cr(III) was investigated for both model and real waste nickel solutions. Dowex G26 appeared to be more efficient in Cr(III) removal (R Cr(III) from 43 to 80%) than MAC-3 (R Cr(III) from 40 to 53%). However, the adsorption from multi-component solutions (presence of Co(II), Ni(II) and Cr(III)) showed no selectivity in Cr(III) adsorption in comparison to those of Co(II) and Ni(II). Cr(III), Ni(II) and Co(II) were removed at a comparable level (30-36%) from a three-component solution of 10 g/dm 3 of each metal ion, and a 56-72% removal of these ions was achieved from the real solution. Therefore, the precipitation of Cr(III) was carried out from a real waste nickel solution to compare its performance with adsorption. The best precipitation solution appeared to be 3 and 30% NaOH due to the quantitative precipitation of Cr(OH) 3 at pH 5 and relatively small co-precipitation of Ni(II) and Co(II) hydroxides (P Co(II) = 20-52%, P Ni(II) = 0-54%). Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that precipitation with a NaOH solution is an efficient pretreatment operation of an electrolyte for further steps of the hydrometallurgical process of nickel electrodeposition and appears to be more selective in the elimination of Cr(III) than adsorption with Dowex G26 resin.

During zinc hydrometallurgy process, the chloride ions in the materials go into the leaching solution, which have abominable effects on equipment, electrowinning, and environment. So, it is necessary to remove chloride ions from zinc sulfate solution. The present review outlines the current research of removal methods of chlorine by holistically highlighting the advantages and mechanisms. The main techniques used to remove chloride ions from zinc sulfate solution are also discussed in detail. Among the methods, the precipitation method using copper slag to remove chlorine is widely used and the chlorine removal rate is up to 98%. In addition, the combination of electrochemistry and nanofiltration technology can form a closed-loop production process with less waste output and near-zero emissions. The global shortage of zinc mines makes the extraction of zinc from zinc-containing wastes a hot research topic. Most kinds of steel mill dust (SMD) cannot be directly returned to the ironmaking and steelmaking processes due to their zinc content. A large amount of SMD produced during steelmaking has become a major challenge for steel plants due to environmental pollution, health issues and land scarcity. Lots of processes for recovering metals from SMD have been developed to comprehensively utilize them and solve these environmental problems. Zinc in SMD can be recovered by these technologies, and the residue can be used as raw material for ironmaking. In this work, the sources and characteristics of SMD from different processes were analyzed firstly. Then, the mechanisms of physical, hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical and pyrometallurgy-hydrometallurgy combined processes for SMD disposal are presented, and these methods are compared in terms of energy consumption, process complexity and industrial application. Finally, suggestions and prospects for utilization of SMD are put forward.

Raney Al-Ni contains 62% of Ni 2 Al 3 and 38% NiAl 3 crystalline phases. Its applicability has been studied within an effective hydrodehalogenation of hardly biodegradable anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac in model aqueous concentrates and, subsequently, even in real hospital wastewater with the aim of transforming them into easily biodegradable products. In model aqueous solution, complete hydrodechlorination of 2 mM aqueous diclofenac solution (0.59 g L -1 ) yielding the 2-anilinophenylacetate was achieved in less than 50 min at room temperature and ambient pressure using only 9.7 g L -1 of KOH and 1.65 g L -1 of Raney Al-Ni alloy. The dissolving of Al during the hydrodehalogenation process is accompanied by complete consumption of NiAl 3 crystalline phase and partial depletion of Ni 2 Al 3 . A comparison of the hydrodehalogenation ability of a mixture of diclofenac and other widely used halogenated aromatic or heterocyclic biocides in model aqueous solution using Al-Ni was performed to verify the high hydrodehalogenation activity for each of the used halogenated contaminants. Remarkably, the robustness of Al-Ni-based hydrodehalogenation was demonstrated even for the removal of non-biodegradable diclofenac in real hospital wastewater with high chloride and nitrate content. After removal of the insoluble part of the Al-Ni for subsequent hydrometallurgical recycling, the low quantity of residual Ni was removed together with insoluble Al(OH) 3 obtained after neutralization of aqueous filtrate by filtration.

The intrinsic advancement of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for application in electric vehicles (EVs), portable electronic devices, and energy-storage devices has led to an increase in the number of spent LIBs. Spent LIBs contain hazardous metals (such as Li, Co, Ni, and Mn), toxic and corrosive electrolytes, metal casting, and polymer binders that pose a serious threat to the environment and human health. Additionally, spent LIBs may serve as an economic source for transition metals, which could be applied to redesigning under a closed-circuit recycling process. Thus, the development of environmentally benign, low cost, and efficient processes for recycling of LIBs for a sustainable future has attracted worldwide attention. Therefore, herein, we introduce the concept of LIBs and review state-of-art technologies for metal recycling processes. Moreover, we emphasize on LIB pretreatment approaches, metal extraction, and pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, and biometallurgical approaches. Direct recycling technologies combined with the profitable and sustainable cathode healing technology have significant potential for the recycling of LIBs without decomposition into substituent elements or precipitation; hence, these technologies can be industrially adopted for EV batteries. Contamination by heavy metals is a significant issue worldwide. In recent decades, soil heavy metals pollutants in China had adverse impacts on soil quality and threatened food security and human health. Anthropogenic inputs mainly generate heavy metal contamination in China. In this review, the approaches were used in these investigations, focusing on geochemical strategies and metal isotope methods, particularly useful for determining the pathway of mining and smelting derived pollution in the soil. Our findings indicate that heavy metal distribution substantially impacts topsoils around mining and smelting sites, which release massive amounts of heavy metals into the environment. Furthermore, heavy metal contamination and related hazards posed by Pb, Cd, As, and Hg are more severe to plants, soil organisms, and humans. It's worth observing that kids are particularly vulnerable to Pb toxicity. And this review also provides novel approaches to control and reduce the impacts of heavy metal pollution. Hydrometallurgy offers a potential method for extracting metals and removing potentially harmful heavy metals from waste to reduce pollution. However, environmentally friendly remediation of contaminated sites is a significant challenge. This paper also evaluates current technological advancements in the remediation of polluted soil, such as stabilization/solidification, natural attenuation, electrokinetic remediation, soil washing, and phytoremediation. The ability of biological approaches, especially phytoremediation, is cost-effective and favorable to the environment.

The recovery of scandium (Sc) from wastes and various resources using solvent extraction (SX) was discussed in detail. Moreover, the metallurgical extractive procedures for Sc recovery were presented. Acidic and neutral organophosphorus (OPCs) extractants are the most extensively used in industrial activities, considering that they provide the highest extraction efficiency of any of the valuable components. Due to the chemical and physical similarities of the rare earth metals, the separation and purification processes of Sc are difficult tasks. Sc has also been extracted from acidic solutions using carboxylic acids, amines, and acidic β-diketone, among other solvents and chemicals. For improving the extraction efficiencies, the development of mixed extractants or synergistic systems for the SX of Sc has been carried out in recent years. Different operational parameters play an important role in the extraction process, such as the type of the aqueous phase and its acidity, the aqueous (A) to organic (O) and solid (S) to liquid (L) phase ratios, as well as the type of the diluents. Sc recovery is now implemented in industrial production using a combination of hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical techniques, such as ore pre-treatment, leaching, SX, precipitation, and calcination. The hydrometallurgical methods (acid leaching and SX) were effective for Sc recovery. Furthermore, the OPCs bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA/P204) and tributyl phosphate (TBP) showed interesting potential taking into consideration some co-extracted metals such as Fe(III) and Ti(IV).

All-solid-state lithium ion batteries (ASS-LIBs) are promising due to their safety and higher energy density as compared to that of conventional LIBs. Over the next few decades, tremendous amounts of spent ASS-LIBs will reach the end of their cycle life and would require recycling in order to address the waste management issue along with reduced exploitation of rare elements. So far, only very limited studies have been conducted on recycling of ASS-LIBS. Herein, we investigate the recycling of the Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) solid-state electrolyte in a LiFePO 4 /LLZO/Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 system using a hydrometallurgical approach. Our results show that different concentration of the leaching solutions can significantly influence the final product of the recycling process. However, it was possible to recover relatively pure La 2 O 3 and ZrO 2 to re-synthesize the cubic LLZO phase, whose high purity was confirmed by XRD measurements., (© 2022 The Authors. A simple, green approach to recover NiMnCoC 2 O 4 as an electrode material for high-performance pseudocapacitors from spent LiNiMnCoO 2 (NMC) batteries is proposed. Four strategic metals (Li, Ni, Co, and Mn) were leached from spent NMC batteries using several organic acids as model green leachants. Among the various candidates of green leaching agents, 2 M citric acid and 5 wt% glucose were selected as the leachant and reductant, respectively. Microwave irradiation was conducted during the leaching step to maximize the performance of the leaching rate and efficiency. The leaching efficiencies within 0.5 h for Ni(II), Li(I), Mn(II), and Co(II) were 90.7 ± 1.6%, 98.3 ± 2.4%, 94.9 ± 4.3%, and 95.6 ± 1.4%, respectively, and were thus as efficient as using aqua regia leaching. After the leaching process, divalent metal ions, that is, Ni(II), Co(II), and Mn(II), were immediately separated at room temperature using oxalic acid. The recovered samples were not further treated and used directly for energy storage applications. The recovered NiMnCoC 2 O 4 ⋅nH 2 O has been demonstrated as a promising electrode for pseudocapacitors, providing a specific capacitance of 1641 F/g, good rate-retention capability (80% of low-current capacitance), and good cycle stability over 4000 charge-discharge cycles., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V.
