The presence of non-reactive phosphorus (NRP) in environmental waters presents a potential risk of eutrophication and poses challenges for the removal of all phosphorus (P) fractions. This study presents the first investigation on the removal performance and mechanism of three model NRP compounds, sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP) and 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC), in the sediment microbial fuel cell-floating treatment wetland (SMFC-FTW). Coupling SMFC with plants proved to be effective at removing NRP via electrochemical oxidation and plant uptake, particularly the challenging-to-degrade phosphonates that contain C-P bonds. Compared with the control group, the removal efficiencies of the model NRP in SMFC were observed to increase by 11.9%-20.8%. SMFC promoted the conversion of NRP to soluble reactive phosphorus (sRP) and the transfer of P to sediment. Furthermore, the electrochemical process enhanced both plant growth and P uptake, and increased P assimilation by 72.6%. The presence of plants in the bioelectrochemical system influenced the occurrence and fate of P by efficiently assimilating sRP and supporting microbial transformation of NRP. Consequently, plants enhanced the removal efficiencies of all P fractions in the overlying water. With the wide application of floating treatment wetland (FTW), the limited performance of FTWs should be improved. A comprehensive review is accordingly necessary to summarize the state-of-the-art on FTWs for performance improvement. An attempt has been made to gain information from literature about technologies to enhance the performance of FTWs. These technologies have been classified into three categories according to their mechanisms: 1) increasing the amount and activity of bacteria; 2) enhancing the growth of plant; and 3) configurable innovations. The design and application of each enhanced FTW have been discussed in detail. Thereafter, all the technologies have been compared and analyzed according to their improvement in pollutant removal and ecological effects. In summary, FTW with additional bio-carriers has a higher potential for future applications with the benefits of wide application conditions, scale-up potential, and the easy combination with other methods to further improve the removal efficiency. Floating treatment wetlands (FTW) are nature-based solutions for the purification of open water systems such as rivers, ponds, and lakes polluted by diffuse sources as untreated or partially treated domestic wastewater and agricultural run-off. Compared with other physicochemical and biological technologies, FTW is a technology with low-cost, simple configuration, easy to operate; has a relatively high efficiency, and is energy-saving, and aesthetic. Water remediation in FTWs is supported by plant uptake and the growth of a biofilm on the water plant roots, so the selection of the macrophyte species is critical, not only to pollutant removal but also to the local ecosystem integrity, especially for full-scale implementation. The key factors such as buoyant frame/raft, plant growth support media, water depth, seasonal variation, and temperature have a considerable role in the design, operation, maintenance, and pollutant treatment performance of FTW. Harvesting is a necessary process to maintain efficient operation by limiting the re-pollution of plants in the decay phase. Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTWs) are an emerging ecological engineering technology being applied the restoration of eutrophic urban water bodies. Documented water-quality benefits of FTW include nutrient removal, transformation of pollutants, and reduction in bacterial contamination. However, translating findings from short-duration lab and mesocosm scale experiments, into sizing criteria that might be applied to field installations is not straightforward. This study presents the results of three well established (>3 years) pilot-scale (40-280 m 2 ) FTW installations in Baltimore, Boston, and Chicago. We quantify annual phosphorus removal through harvesting of above-ground vegetation and find an average removal rate of 2 g-P m -2 . In our own study and in a review of literature, we find limited evidence of enhanced sedimentation as a pathway for phosphorus removal. In addition to water-quality benefits, FTW planted with native species, provide valuable wetland habitat; and theoretically improve ecological function. We document efforts to quantify the local effect of FTW installations on benthic and sessile macroinvertebrates, zooplankton, bloom-forming cyanobacteria, and fish. Data from these three projects suggest that, even on a small scale, FTW produce localized changes in biotic structure that reflect improving environmental quality. This study provides a simple and defensible method for sizing FTW for nutrient removal in eutrophic waterbodies. Conventional oil spill recovery may cause significant damage to shoreline habitats during the removal of oiled material and from human and equipment interaction. In addition, these methods are costly and can leave a significant amount of residual oil in the environment. Biological remediation strategies may be a less invasive option for recovering oil from sensitive regions, with potential to increase recovery. Floating treatment wetlands are a growing area of interest for biodegradation of oil facilitated by plant-bacterial partnerships. Plants are able to stimulate microbial colonization in the rhizosphere, creating greater opportunity for contaminant interaction and degradation. A literature review analysis revealed thirteen articles researching this topic, and found that floating treatment wetlands have high potential to degrade oil contaminants. In some instances, plants and inoculated bacteria exhibited the highest degradation potential, however, plants alone had higher degradation potential than bacteria alone. Strategies for remediation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) generally prioritise highly contaminated source areas. However, the mobility of PFAS in the environment often results in extensive low-level contamination of surface waters across broad areas. Constructed Floating Wetlands (CFWs) promote the growth of plants in buoyant structures where pollutants are assimilated into plant biomass. This study examined the hydroponic growth of Juncus krausii, Baumea articulata and Phragmites australis over a 28-day period for remediation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) contaminated (0.2 µg/L to 30 µg/L) urban stormwater. With increasing PFOA and PFOS concentrations, accumulation in plant species increased although root and shoot distribution varied depending on PFAS functional group. Less PFOA than PFOS accumulated in plant roots (0.006-0.16 versus 0.008-0.68 µg/g), while more PFOA accumulated in the plant shoots (0.02-0.55 versus 0.01-0.16 µg/g) indicating translocation to upper plant portions. Phragmites australis accumulated the highest overall plant tissue concentrations of PFOA and PFOS. The NanoSIMS data demonstrated that PFAS associated with roots and shoots was absorbed and not just surface bound. Excess phosphorus (P) in surface runoff has significant deleterious impacts on water quality through eutrophication. Commonly, P is transported via non-point pollution and the proportion of easily plant-available reactive P (RP) among other P forms may vary significantly. Non-reactive P (NRP) can potentially contribute to the eutrophication of waterbodies, however the cleavage into bio-available P forms and eventually their biological uptake remains uncertain. This holds also true for floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) which became established as nutrient mitigation measures for surface waters in recent years. However, little information is available about the conversion and removal of NRP in FTWs. In this study, the conversion and removal of different forms of P in FTWs were investigated. Experiments were operated in batch mode and treatments consisted of (1) two concentration levels: a high P concentration of 3.0 mg/L and a low P concentration of 1.0 mg/L, and (2) four mesocosm treatments: (a) artificial roots only, (b) substrates only, (c) plants only, (d) plants and substrates. The results showed that RP removal mainly depended on sedimentation, substrate sorption, and biological assimilation. The removal of NRP mainly depended on hydrolysis, microbial-mediated conversion, and biological absorption. The combination of plant and substrate provided stable and efficient phosphorus removal performance in high P conditions, while plants were important for P removal in low P conditions. Living plants were indispensable and greatly affected the performance of FTWs. The specific enrichment and culling of microorganisms by plants resulted in the formation of specific rhizosphere microbial communities and promoted the removal of NRP. Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Acidovorax might be responsible for P mineralization in the FTWs. Most water bodies around the world suffer from pollution to varying degrees. Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) are a simple and efficient ecological treatment technology and have been widely studied and applied as a sustainable solution for different source waters. Based on the analysis of abundant literature in the last ten years, this paper systematically reviews the history and the latest development of FTWs. Meanwhile, the treatment performance and pollutant removal mechanisms of FTWs on the natural water, stormwater, domestic wastewater, industrial wastewater, and agricultural runoff are analyzed. In particular, very interesting information is provided, such as water depth, water surface coverage, the ratio of dissolved to total phosphorous (DRP/TP), the ratio of nitrogen to phosphorous (N/P), BOD/COD ratio, and its effects on the efficiency and removal mechanisms of FTWs. This information will provide useful references and guidance for optimizing the design of FTW and pollutant treatment efficiency of different source waters. This paper also provides an objective review of the limitations of FTWs. Subsequently, the enhancements of FTW technology which are recognized to be effective, including aeration, adding functional fillers or obligate degrading bacteria, and construction of hybrid FTWs, are summarized and recommendations are made for further research., (© 2021. Though having an economic and ecological impact on Marriott Lake management in Egypt, water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is an aquatic floating macrophyte with a known phytoremediation potential. In order to assess its remediation potential, pilot floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) with E. crassipes were built in duplicates to evaluate the removal of nutrients and heavy metals from the polluted lake water. The experimental design included units with different water depths (15, 25, and 35 cm; D 15 , D 25, and D 35 , respectively) and plant coverage (90, 70, 50, and 0%; P 90 , P 70 , P 50, and P 0 , respectively). The pilot FTWs were monitored over a 7-day operation cycle to identify the optimum combination of design (plant coverage, water depth) and operation (hydraulic retention time; HRT) parameters needed for maximum BOD 5 , TN, NH 4 -N, and TP removal. NH 4 -N removal reached 97.4% in the D 25 P 50 unit after 3 days, BOD 5 75% in the D 15 P 90 after 3 days, TN 82% in the D 25 P 70 after 4 days, and TP 84.2% in the D 35 P 70 after 4 days. The open-water evaporation rate was higher than the evapotranspiration rate in the planted units, probably due to the warm climate of the study area. Metals were also sufficiently removed through bioaccumulation in plant tissues in the order of Fe > Pb > Cu > Ni (62.5%, 88.9%, 81.7%, and 80.4% for D 25 P 50 , D 25 P 70 , D 25 P 50 , and D 25 P 90 , respectively), while most of the assimilated metal mass was translocated to the plant roots. The biochemical composition of the plant tissue was significantly different between the shoot and root parts. Overall, the FTW with 70% E. crassipes coverage, 25-cm water depth, and an HRT of 3-5 days was identified as the optimum design for effective remediation of the polluted Marriott Lake in Egypt.

Floating treatment wetland (FTW) in restoration of low C/N ratio wastewater was deemed to a frequently used method. However, the nitrate removal performance in floating beds was limited due to insufficient organic carbon sources. Iron scraps as a potential electron donor was beneficial to the NO 3 - -N reduction. To research the removal performance and mechanism of denitrification in FTW with iron scraps, FTW with Iris pseudacorus was built, and iron scraps were added as an electron donor to improve nitrogen removal efficiency. The batch experimental results demonstrated that the proper mass ratio of iron scraps to NO 3 - -N was 500:1. With iron scraps, the NO 3 - -N removal efficiency of FTW and control system increased significantly to 98.04% and 44.42% respectively in 2 weeks, while there was no obvious influence on the removal of NH 4 + -N. After adding iron scraps, the proportion of bacteria in the systems related to iron cycle and the relative abundance of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria have increased obviously. By calculating the nitrogen balance, nitrogen reduction via plant uptake accounted for 8.79%, and the microbial denitrification was the main nitrogen removal pathway in FTW.

This study evaluated removal efficiencies of six contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in floating treatment wetland (FTW) mesocosms established with either Japanese Sweetflag (Acorus gramineus Sol. ex Aiton) or canna lilies (Canna Hybrida L. 'Orange King Humbert'). The CECs included: acetaminophen (APAP), atrazine (ATZ), carbamazepine (CBZ), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and 17β-estradiol (E2). Each treatment was planted with different numbers of plants (i.e., 0, 10, 15, and 20), and the experiments lasted for 17 weeks. Dissipation of CECs was greater in planted treatments than in non-planted controls, and the planting number had little effect on dissipation of CECs. All residues of APAP and E2 dissipated rapidly within 2 weeks in all planted treatments. At the end of the experiment, residues of ATZ and SMX completely dissipated in the canna treatments, but not in the sweetflag treatments (75.8-87.6% and 96.3-97.1%, respectively). During the 17 week study, moderate dissipation of CBZ was observed in treatments including cannas (79.5-82.6%) and sweetflag (69.4-82.3%), while less dissipation was observed for PFOA (9.0-15.0% with sweetflag and 58.4-62.3% with cannas). Principal component analysis indicates that aqueous persistency of CECs and species of plants used influenced the dissipation of CECs in FTWs. Surface water bodies worldwide may be contaminated with various organic contaminants. In many cases, the actual toxicity thresholds to nontarget organisms are unknown, thus presenting unknown risks. This study evaluated the potential use of floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) planted with Canna flaccida (common name: Canna) for removing two pharmaceuticals (acetaminophen and carbamazepine) and one herbicide (atrazine) from contaminated water. Triplicate FTWs with varying plant densities were established in 378 L mesocosms. After dosing the mesocosms with the contaminants, water samples were collected over a 12-week period for analysis. The planted FTWs showed differing abilities for removing acetaminophen, atrazine, and carbamazepine. Plant densities on the FTWs did not affect dissipation of acetaminophen or atrazine, but did carbamazepine. All acetaminophen residues were removed from the water within 2 weeks, while all atrazine residues were removed within 12 weeks. Approximately, 79-92% of these residues removed were associated with the FTWs. In contrast, all of the carbamazepine was not removed after 12 weeks, at which time only 29-36.7% of the total removed was associated with the FTWs. Overall results suggest that FTWs established with C. flaccida are promising for removing trace concentrations of acetaminophen, atrazine, and carbamazepine from surface water.

Excessive nitrogen accumulated from wastewater with low C/N ratio is a new threat to water ecosystem. In this study, surface flow constructed wetland (SFCW) and floating treatment wetland (FTW) planted with Iris pseudacorus were set in parallel for nitrogen removal. The nitrogen removal efficiencies and pathways, as well as the abundance and functional diversities of the microbial community, were investigated. The results demonstrated that SFCW generally had better nitrogen removal performance than FTW did over four seasons. The average total nitrogen removal efficiency was 66.0% and 43.8% in SFCW and FTW, respectively. The plant uptake played a vital role in nitrogen reduction, which accounted for 29.3% and 7.7% of the total removed nitrogen in SFCW and FTW, respectively. A combination of high-throughput sequencing and quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that the two wetland systems had complete nitrogen cycling, and the narG gene was the dominant nitrogen-transformation functional gene in both systems. More abundant denitrifying genes in SFCW than in FTW were also responsible for higher removal capacity of nitrogen. The results suggest that the planting pattern of wetland vegetation has an important impact on nitrogen removal efficiency by influencing the plant absorption and the development of microbial communities.

Artificial substrates (ASs) and floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) have been widely used in the treatment of polluted surface water. In fact, periphyton on ASs functions in nutrient removal, while the plant-periphyton complex functions in FTWs. However, the nutrient removal performance of the periphyton on ASs and the plant-periphyton complex in FTWs has not been systematically compared. Thus, ASs and FTWs were established in a mesocosm experiment to compare nitrogen and phosphorus removal between the two ecological treatment techniques. The results showed that the total nitrogen removal efficiency was 60.4% in the AS treatments and 65.3% in the FTWs, while the total phosphorus removal efficiency was 83.7% in the AS treatments and 39.45% in the FTWs. Periphyton on the ASs absorbed 2.5 g N m -2 and 0.85 g P m -2 , accounting for 20.8% of the N removal and 18.7% of the P removal. Sedimentation contributed to 71.3% of the N removal and 56.1% of the P removal in the AS treatments. For the plant-periphyton complex in the FTWs, 25.1% of the N and 53.0% of the P accumulated in plant tissue. Most of the reduced N (47.1%) was removed by other pathways, which was likely the effect of periphyton attached on plant roots and floating rafts. The nutrient removal efficiencies and pathways of AS and FTW treatments showed different characteristics, providing a reference for the selection of treatment measures for polluted surface water remediation.

Stormwater wet detention ponds hold a permanent pool of water and offer many beneficial uses including flood mitigation, pollution prevention, downstream erosion control, increased aesthetics, and recreational uses. Although the removal of nutrients is generally low for stormwater wet detention ponds in urban areas, floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) can be installed to offer an innovative solution toward naturally removing excess nutrients and aiding in stormwater management. To improve the stormwater reuse potential, this study assessed nutrient, microcystin, and chlorophyll-a interactions in three Florida stormwater wet detention ponds with recently implemented FTWs. Both episodic (storm events) and routine (non-storm events) sampling campaigns were carried out at the three ponds located in Ruskin, Gainesville, and Orlando. The results showed a salient negative correlation between total phosphorus and microcystin concentrations for both storm and non-storm events across all three ponds. The dominant nutrient species in correlation seemed to be total phosphorus, which correlated positively with chlorophyll-a concentrations at all ponds and sampling conditions, with the exception of Orlando non-storm events. The application of floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) in point and non-point source pollution control has received much attention recently. Although the potential of this emerging technology is supported by various studies, quantifying FTW performance in urban retention ponds remains elusive due to significant research gaps. Actual urban retention pond water was utilized in this mesocosm study to evaluate phosphorus and nitrogen removal efficiency of FTWs. Multiple treatments were used to investigate the contribution of each component in the FTW system with a seven-day retention time. The four treatments included a control, floating mat, pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata L.), and softstem bulrush (Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani). The water samples collected on Day 0 (initial) and 7 were analyzed for total phosphorus (TP), total particulate phosphorus, orthophosphate, total nitrogen (TN), organic nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate-nitrite nitrogen, and chlorophyll-a. Statistical tests were used to evaluate the differences between the four treatments. The effects of temperature on TP and TN removal rates of the FTWs were described by the modified Arrhenius equation. Our results indicated that all three FTW designs, planted and unplanted floating mats, could significantly improve phosphorus and nitrogen removal efficiency (%, E-TP and E-TN) compared to the control treatment during the growing season, i.e., May through August. The E-TP and E-TN was enhanced by 8.2% and 18.2% in the FTW treatments planted with the pickerelweed and softstem bulrush, respectively. Organic matter decomposition was likely to be the primary contributor of nutrient removal by FTWs in urban retention ponds. Such a mechanism is fostered by microbes within the attached biofilms on the floating mats and plant root surfaces. Among the results of the four treatments, the FTWs planted with pickerelweed had the highest E-TP, and behaved similarly with the other two FTW treatments for nitrogen removal during the growth period. The temperature effects described by the modified Arrhenius equation revealed that pickerelweed is sensitive to temperature and provides considerable phosphorus removal when water temperature is greater than 25 °C. However, the nutrient removal effectiveness of this plant species may be negligible for water temperatures below 15 °C. A field trial comparing the fate of metals in two parallel stormwater retention ponds, one of which was retrofitted with a Floating Treatment Wetland (FTW), was carried out near Auckland, New Zealand. Results suggest that the FTW increased metal accumulation in the pond sediment especially in summer due to lower sediment Eh, more anoxic water column, neutral pH and greater source of organic matter (OM) induced by the FTW. These factors combined with higher temperature enhanced metal sorption onto OM, flocculation of particulate pollutants, metal sulphide formation and reduced OM degradation and thus limited release of metals. Unlike Zn, Cu speciation in the pond sediment was relatively unchanged under various sediment Eh conditions due to its strong binding property with sulphide and OM. Occasional moderate metal release was detected from the FTW pond sediment likely due to aerobic OM degradation at the beginning of spring and/or hydroxides reduction when sediments became reduced later in the season. No release was noticed from the conventional pond sediment likely due to biosorption and/or uptake by algae which developed in the conventional pond and settled on the bottom sediment. Direct uptake by the plants of the FTW and sorption onto root plaques are not thought to be significant removal pathways. Nevertheless roots play a major role in trapping particulate pollutants, eventually sloughing off to settle on the bottom of the pond, and provide an adequate substrate for bacterial development due to release of organic compounds which are both essential for dissolved metal sorption and metal sulphide formation., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
