This paper proposes a fault-tolerant control (FTC) strategy using the current space vectors to diagnose sensor failures and enhance the sustained operation of a field-oriented (FO) controlled induction motor drive (IMD). Three space vectors are established for the sensor fault diagnosis technique, including one converted from the measured currents and the other two calculated from the current estimation technique, respectively, measured and with reference speeds. A mixed mathematical model using three space vectors and their components is proposed to accurately determine the fault condition of each sensor in the motor drive. After determining the operating status of each sensor, if the sensor signal is in good condition, the feedback signal to the controller will be the measured signal; otherwise, the estimated signal will be used instead of the failed signal. Failure states of the various sensors were simulated to check the effectiveness of the proposed technique in the Matlab/Simulink environment. The simulation results are positive: the IMD system applying the proposed FTC technique accurately detected the failed sensor and maintained stability during the operation.

Submerged aquatic vegetation plays a fundamental role as a habitat for the biodiversity of marine species. To carry out the research and monitoring of submerged aquatic vegetation more efficiently and accurately, it is important to use advanced technologies such as underwater robots. However, when conducting underwater missions to capture photographs and videos near submerged aquatic vegetation meadows, algae can become entangled in the propellers and cause vehicle failure. In this context, a neurobiologically inspired control architecture is proposed for the control of unmanned underwater vehicles with redundant thrusters. The proposed control architecture learns to control the underwater robot in a non-stationary environment and combines the associative learning method and vector associative map learning to generate transformations between the spatial and velocity coordinates in the robot actuator. The experimental results obtained show that the proposed control architecture exhibits notable resilience capabilities while maintaining its operation in the face of thruster failures. In the discussion of the results obtained, the importance of the proposed control architecture is highlighted in the context of the monitoring and conservation of underwater vegetation meadows. Its resilience, robustness, and adaptability capabilities make it an effective tool to face challenges and meet mission objectives in such critical environments.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) play a significant role in ocean-related research fields as tools for human exploration and the development of marine resources. However, the uncertainty of the underwater environment and the complexity of underwater motion pose significant challenges to the fault-tolerant control of AUV actuators. This paper presents a fault-tolerant control strategy for AUV actuators based onTakagi and Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy logic and pseudo-inverse quadratic programming under control constraints, aimed at addressing potential actuator faults. Firstly, considering the steady-state performance and dynamic performance of the control system, a T-S fuzzy controller is designed. Next, based on the redundant configuration of the actuators, the propulsion system is normalized, and the fault-tolerant control of AUV actuators is achieved using the pseudo-inverse method under thrust allocation. When control is constrained, a quadratic programming approach is used to compensate for the input control quantity. Finally, the effectiveness of the fuzzy control and fault-tolerant control allocation methods studied in this paper is validated through mathematical simulation. The experimental results indicate that in various fault scenarios, the pseudo-inverse combined with a nonlinear quadratic programming algorithm can compensate for the missing control inputs due to control constraints, ensuring the normal thrust of AUV actuators and achieving the expected fault-tolerant effect.

Due to the widespread application and significant investment required for a single crane, there is an increased emphasis on crane safety and service life. Fault-tolerant control as an effective solution to unexpected faults has been widely studied recently. However, most fault-tolerant control methods require redundant actuators or a complex design process, which is unsuitable for the tower crane. Following these problems, a fault-tolerant controller based on an adaptive backstepping technique is proposed. Firstly, the system states are reconstructed and written as a cascade system. Secondly, a fixed-time convergence optimized backstepping controller is proposed to achieve smooth control of the tower crane without generating sudden or abrupt values. Then, an adaptive approach has been proposed to update fault parameters for the crane system in case of a sudden fault occurrence. A lack of available information on heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems can affect the performance of data-driven fault-tolerant control (FTC) models. This study proposed an in situ selective incremental calibration (ISIC) strategy. Faults were introduced into the indoor air (Ttz1) thermostat and supply air temperature (Tsa) and chilled water supply air temperature (Tchws) sensors of a central air-conditioning system. The changes in the system performance after FTC were evaluated. Then, we considered the effects of the data quality, data volume, and variable number on the FTC results. For the Ttz1 thermostat and Tsa sensor, the system energy consumption was reduced by 2.98% and 3.72% with ISIC, respectively, and the predicted percentage dissatisfaction was reduced by 0.67% and 0.63%, respectively. Better FTC results were obtained using ISIC when the Ttz1 thermostat had low noise, a 7-day data volume, or sufficient variables and when the Tsa and Tchws sensors had low noise, a 14-day data volume, or limited variables.

The research investigates the fixed-time command-filtered composite adaptive neural fault-tolerant (FCCANF) control issue of strict-feedback nonlinear systems (SFNSs). There exist unknown functions and bounded disturbances in the considered systems. Radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs) will be used in the estimate of the unknown functions. By the serial-parallel estimation models (SPEMs), the forecast biases and the track biases can change the weights of RBFNNs and the approximate characteristics of RBFNNs will be improved. Then, utilizing the novel fixed-time command filter and adaptive disturbance observers, the issue of complex explosion will be effectively solved and the external disturbance is effectively compensated. Subsequently, by utilizing the adaptive control technique, a novel FCCANF controller is developed. Additionally, we have that the system internal variables are bounded and the output variable inclines to a little interval around zero in fixed time which is not determined by the system initial variables. It is the first report about fault-tolerant-based prescribed performance control of switched nonlinear systems under multiple faults. The concerned faults include not only external faults but also actuator faults. In the process of backstepping control design, prescribed performance control is fully considered, and the combination of unknown nonlinear functions is estimated by multi-dimensional Taylor network. The paper proposes a data-driven fault-tolerant control (FTC) strategy to construct and accommodate the bias on ambient temperature measurements in supermarket refrigeration systems. The bias, which is caused by direct or indirect exposure of the sensor to the sun, can have a significant impact on the refrigeration system's energy consumption. Based on analysis of the real data a comprehensive model of the bias is developed and then used to generate realistic scenarios for testing the proposed FTC method. The FTC method uses a feed forward Neural Network (NN) as a black box model. The model is trained by active injection of perturbation signals during the night operations. This paper investigates the fault-tolerant prescribed performance control problem for a class of multiple-input single-output unknown nonlinear systems subject to process faults and actuator failures. In contrast to the related works, we consider a general class of nonlinear systems with both multiplicative nonlinearities and additive nonlinearities corrupted by the process faults; only the boundedness of the process faults and the continuity of the nonlinear functions are required, without the explicit or fixed structures of the fault functions. To conquer this problem, a less-demanding and low-complexity fault-tolerant prescribed performance control approach is proposed. The controller is independent of the specific information of faults or the system model and does not invoke fault diagnosis or neural/fuzzy approximation to acquire such knowledge. It achieves the reference tracking with the predefined rate and accuracy. This article scrutinizes the stabilization and fault reconstruction issues for interval type-2 fuzzy-based cyber-physical systems with actuator faults, deception attacks and external disturbances. The primary objective of this research is to formulate the learning observer system with the interval type-2 fuzzy technique that reconstructs the actuator faults as well as the immeasurable states of the addressed fuzzy based model. Further, the information of reconstructed actuator faults is incorporated in the developed controller with the imperfect premise variables for ensuring the stabilization of the system under consideration. At the same time, the H ∞ technique is employed to reduce the impact of external disturbances in the considered model. In addition to that, the deception attacks are represented as a stochastic variable that satisfies the Bernoulli distributions. On the ground of this, a set of sufficient criteria is deduced in the context of linear matrix inequalities to affirm the stability of the addressed systems. To enhance the robustness of ship autopilot (SA) system with nonlinear dynamics, unmeasured states, and unknown steering machine fault, an observer-based H ∞ fuzzy fault-tolerant switching control for ship course tracking is proposed. Firstly, a global Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy nonlinear ship autopilot (NSA) is developed with full consideration of ship steering characteristics. And the actual navigation data collected from a real ship are used to verify the reasonableness and feasibility of NSA model. Then, virtual fuzzy observers (VFOs) for both fault-free and faulty systems are proposed to estimate the unmeasured states and unknown fault simultaneously, and compensate for the faulty system by using the fault estimates. Accordingly, the VFO-based H ∞ robust controller (VFO-HRC) and fault-tolerant controller (VFO-HFTC) are designed. Subsequently, a smoothed Z-score-based fault detection and alarm (FDA) is developed to provide switching signals for which the controller and its corresponding observer should be invoked. System stability deterioration in microgrids commonly occurs due to unpredictable faults and equipment malfunctions. Recently, robust control techniques have been used in microgrid systems to address these difficulties. In this paper, for DC-islanded microgrids that have sensors faults, a new passive fault-tolerant control strategy is developed. The suggested approach can be used to maintain system stability in the presence of flaws, such as faulty actuators and sensors, as well as component failures. The suggested control is effective when the fault is never recognized (or when the fault is not being precisely known, and some ambiguity in the fault may be interpreted as uncertainty in the system's dynamics following the fault). The design is built around a derived sufficient condition in the context of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and the attractive ellipsoid technique. The ellipsoidal stabilization idea is to bring the state trajectories into a small region including the origin (an ellipsoid with minimum volume) and the trajectories will not leave the ellipsoid for the future time. Finally, computational studies on a DC microgrid system are carried out to assess the effectiveness of the proposed fault-tolerant control approach. When compared with previous studies, the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed control technique can significantly enhance the reliability and efficiency of DC microgrid systems.

In this paper, the issue of event-triggered optimal fault-tolerant control is investigated for input-constrained nonlinear systems with mismatched disturbances. To eliminate the effect of abrupt faults and ensure the optimal performance of general nonlinear dynamics, an adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm is employed to develop a sliding mode fault-tolerant control strategy. When the system trajectories converge to the sliding-mode surface, the equivalent sliding mode dynamics is transformed into a reformulated auxiliary system with a modified cost function. Then, a single critic neural network (NN) is adopted to solve the modified Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. In order to overcome the difficulty that arises from the persistence of excitation (PE) condition, the experience replay technique is utilized to update the critic weights. In this study, a novel control method is proposed, which can effectively eliminate the effects of abrupt faults while achieving optimal control with the minimum cost under a single network architecture. Furthermore, the closed-loop nonlinear system is proved to be uniformly ultimate boundedness based on Lyapunov stability theory. The actuator fault-tolerant control problem for a variable-pitch quadrotor is addressed under uncertain conditions. Following a model-based approach, the plant nonlinear dynamics are faced with a disturbance observer-based control and a sequential quadratic programming control allocation, where only kinematic data of the onboard inertial measurement unit are required for the fault-tolerant control, i.e., it does not require the measurement of the motor speed nor the current drawn by the actuators. In the case of almost horizontal wind, a single observer handles both faults and the external disturbance. The estimation of the wind is fed forward by the controller, while the actuator fault estimation is exploited in the control allocation layer, which copes with the variable-pitch nonlinear dynamics, thrust saturation, and rate limits. Numerical simulations in the presence of measurement noise show the capability of the scheme to handle multiple actuator faults in a windy environment.

In this article, the design and experimental evaluation of a fault-tolerant controller are introduced for a double-rod electro-hydraulic actuator subjected to actuator faults and disturbances. The internal leakage fault is captured as a bias fault, whilst the faults in servo-valve and supply failure are considered as a partial loss of effectiveness (LOE) fault. The design obstacles caused by the disturbances and bias fault are suppressed by nonlinear disturbance observers (NDO) while an asymmetric barrier Lyapunov function is used to ensure the non-violated boundary of the output position. To tackle the LOE fault, the development of an enhanced adaptive compensation technique for actuator fault-tolerant control (FTC) is then constructed. Moreover, to mitigate the "explosion of complexity" in the traditional backstepping design, the command-filtered control is utilized to elaborate the FTC scheme. This work deals with the problem of passive fault-tolerant control (FTC) for discrete-time networked control systems (NCSs). Network imperfections such as random time delay and packet dropout are modeled as a Markov chain that results in a Markovian jump linear system (MJLS). Some of the elements in the transition probability matrix (TPM) are supposed to be unknown so as to address network complexities. In addition, a comprehensive and practical fault model that considers the stochastic nature of networks is employed. By utilizing this fault model, the closed-loop NCS model is obtained by means of state augmentation technique. Then, a constrained model predictive control (MPC) is proposed to develop a fault-tolerant control strategy in which all these issues are considered as well as input constraint. Sufficient conditions to design the proposed reliable controller are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, two examples are utilized to demonstrate the validity of the proposed FTC. This paper focuses on the adaptive reinforcement learning-based optimal control problem for standard nonstrict-feedback nonlinear systems with the actuator fault and an unknown dead zone. To simultaneously reduce the computational complexity and eliminate the local optimal problem, a novel neural network weight updated algorithm is presented to replace the classic gradient descent method. By utilizing the backstepping technique, the actor critic-based reinforcement learning control strategy is developed for high-order nonlinear nonstrict-feedback systems. In addition, two auxiliary parameters are presented to deal with the input dead zone and actuator fault respectively. All signals in the system are proven to be semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded by Lyapunov theory analysis. At the end of the paper, some simulation results are shown to illustrate the remarkable effect of the proposed approach.

In this paper, we study the trajectory tracking control of underactuated surface vessels(USVs) subject to actuator faults, uncertain dynamics, unknown environmental disturbances, and communication resource constraints. Considering that the actuator is prone to bad faults, the uncertainties formed by the combination of fault factors, dynamic uncertainties and external disturbances are compensated by a single online updated adaptive parameter. In the compensation process, we combine the robust neural-damping technology with the minimum learning parameters (MLPs), which improves the compensation accuracy and reduces the computational complexity of the system. To further improve the steady-state performance and transient response of the system, finite-time control (FTC) theory is introduced into the design of the control scheme. At the same time, we adopt the event-triggered control (ETC) technology, which reduces the action frequency of the controller and effectively saves the remote communication resources of the system. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified by simulation. Simulation results show that the control scheme has high tracking accuracy and strong anti-interference ability. In addition, it can effectively compensate for the adverse influence of fault factors on the actuator, and save the remote communication resources of the system.

Reliable and real-time active diagnosis of system faults with uncertainties is strongly dependent on the input design. This paper establishes a data-driven framework for integrated design of active fault diagnosis and control while ensuring the tracking performance. To be specific, the input design is formulated as a constrained optimization problem that can be solved with the aid of constrained reinforcement learning algorithms. Moreover, based on the maximum mean discrepancy metric, a novel active fault isolation scheme is proposed to implement model discrimination using system outputs. In modern systems with induction motors (IM), in addition to precision, it is also very important to ensure the highest possible reliability and safety. To ensure the above, information about the stator current value is required. If the current sensor (CS) fails, a redundant sensor or an algorithmic solution can be used. The Luenberger observer (LO) can be used to estimate the lost stator current without increasing the cost of the drive system. However, this solution is based on the mathematical model of IM, which is sensitive to its parameters. Therefore, this paper presents a modified LO (MLO) and investigates the effect of a coefficient in the error gain matrix on improving robustness to changes in the IM parameters. As shown by extensive studies, the proposed solution has significantly reduced the influence of the IM parameters on the accuracy of the stator current estimation, which has not been previously reported in the known literature.

This brief disposes the finite-time anti-unwinding trajectory tracking control problem of the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) encountering model uncertainties, ocean disturbances and actuator failures. Primarily, the kinematic model of translational and rotational motions is depicted by unit quaternion in lieu of classical Euler angle such that the AUV's dynamics could be globally and uniquely formulated. Subsequently, two finite-time control strategies are presented here to leave the state variables of AUV can converge to an adjustable region. Additionally, the adaptive laws could be applicable to the existence of actuator faults by utilizing a passive fault-tolerant technology. By integrating the initial value of the scalar quaternion into the sliding mode surface, the proposed controllers are characterized with anti-unwinding property. Then, with the application of hyperbolic tangent function, finite-time stability will be achieved for tracking errors without singularity. A novel diagnosis method based on the rotor slip is proposed in the paper to correctly detect current and speed sensor failures during the induction motor drive (IMD) operation. In order to enhance reliability and avoid confusion in the diagnosis algorithm due to the influence of measured signal quality, each fault type is determined in a priority order defined by the diagnosis method. Based on the features of the IMD applying the field-oriented control (FOC) technique, an innovative model uses the measured currents and reference speed as the input signals to estimate the rotor slip for the current sensor fault detection. After verifying the quality of the feedback of the current signals, a speed sensor fault function is continued, and performs according to relations among the reference speed, estimated speed based on the sliding mode method, and measured rotor speeds. Finally, the estimated quantities are selected to replace the wrong measured current or speed signals. The feasibility of the proposed approach is verified by simulations using Matlab-Simulink software as well as by practical experiments using an IMD prototype with a rated power of 2.2 kW and a DSC-TMS320F28335-based control system. The obtained simulation and experimental results demonstrated the feasibility, effectiveness, and reliability of the proposed diagnosis technique in detecting sensor failures and maintaining the stable operation of the IMD.

This paper makes an investigation on the fault-tolerant control (FTC) problem for a hypersonic reentry vehicle (HSV) in the coexistence of unknown movement of center-of-mass, system input constraint and failure of actuator. Firstly, the dynamics of HSV's attitude system with the unknown factors mentioned above are developed to illustrate the particularity of the researched topic. The influences of unexpected centroid shift on an FTC design can be summarized into the following three parts: unknown system uncertainties, eccentric torque as well as changing system moment of inertia matrix, which are coupled and unknown. Secondly, due to the difficulty in decoupling and estimating these influences (embodied in the output states of the system) one by one, it is the attitude system states observer that is proposed to estimate those detrimental unknown effects. The designed observer is consisted of an adaptive fault observer and an adaptive sliding-mode observer, supporting an innovative adaptive FTC scheme free from the variation of inverse matrix that might be singular due to an unexpected centroid shift. This fault-tolerant controller established in the estimated system states is derived by utilizing the above mentioned observer and adaptive backstepping control in conjunction with adaptive auxiliary compensation systems to handle the system input saturation. Moreover, the convergence of attitude tracking error and the boundedness of all closed-loop signals are achieved in the light of Lyapunov stability theory and boundedness analysis. This paper investigates the problem of formation fault-tolerant control of multiple quadrotors (QRs) for a mobile sensing oriented application. The QRs subject to faults, input saturation and time-varying delays can be controlled to perform a target-enclosing and covering task while guaranteeing the state constraints will not be exceeded. A distributed formation control scheme is proposed, using a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN)-based time-delay position controller and an adaptive fault-tolerant attitude controller. The Lyapunov-Krasovskii approach is used to analyze the time-varying delay. Barrier Lyapunov function is deployed to handle the prescribed constraints, and an auxiliary system combined with a command filter is designed to resolve the saturation problem. An RBFNN and adaptive estimators are deployed to provide estimates of disturbances, fault signals and uncertainties. It is proven that all the closed-loop signals are bounded under the proposed protocol, while the prescribed constraints will not be violated, which enhances the flight safety and QR formation's applicability. Comparative simulations based on application scenarios further verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In order to improve robust operating performance and enhance bus voltage stability, a learning observer-based fault-tolerant control strategy is proposed for the distributed generation in islanded microgrid with sensor faults and uncertain disturbances. Firstly, the output feedback control theory and the linear matrix inequality method are used to design closed-loop controller for the voltage source inverter of distributed generation; secondly, a fault-tolerant model and control structure of the distributed generation in an islanded microgrid with sensor faults is analyzed. By employing the fault output signal conversion filter and proportional derivative type learning observer, the online estimation and real-time compensation of the sensor fault signal are realized. Thirdly, the system synthesis of output feedback control and fault-tolerant control is completed. Finally, the multi-scenario sensor fault scheme simulation experiment verifies that the proposed control strategy has strong sensor fault tolerance and adaptability.

This paper deals with the LPV control of a three-axis gimbal including fault-tolerant capabilities. First, the derivation of an analytical model for the considered system based on the robotics Serial-Link (SL) theory is derived. Then, a series of simplifications that allow obtaining a quasi-LPV model for the considered gimbal is proposed. Gain scheduling LPV controllers with PID structure are designed using pole placement by means of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Moreover, exploiting the sensor redundancy available in the gimbal, a virtual-sensor-based fault tolerant control (FTC) strategy is proposed. This virtual sensor uses a Recursive Least Square (RLS) estimation algorithm and an LPV observer for fault detection and estimation. Finally, the proposed LPV control scheme including the virtual sensor strategy is tested in simulation in several scenarios.

With steadily increasing interest in utilizing wind turbine (WT) systems as primary electrical energy generators, fault-tolerance has been considered decisive to enhance their efficiency and reliability. In this work, an optimal fault-tolerant pitch control (FTPC) strategy is addressed to adjust the pitch angle of WT blades in the presence of sensor, actuator, and system faults. The proposed scheme incorporates a fractional-calculus based extended memory (EM) of pitch angles along with a fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID) controller to enhance the performance of the WT. A dynamic weighted parallel firefly algorithm (DWPFA) is also proposed to tune the controller parameters. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is evaluated on the test functions adopted from 2017 IEEE congress on evolutionary computation (CEC2017). The merits of the proposed fault-tolerant approach are tested on a 4.8-MW WT benchmark model and compared to conventional PI and optimal FOPID approaches. This paper studies the distributed attitude synchronization control for flexible spacecrafts with the consideration of unmeasurable modal variable and partial loss of actuator effectiveness faults. The designed rotation matrix-based controller consisted of the basic pattern and the supplementary pattern. Based on a connected undirected graph, the original graph was established on the assumption of inexistent actuator fault, and the unavailable flexible dynamics was approximately described by neural networks (NNs). By using the minimum learning parameter (MLP) algorithm, the finite-time stability of the formation system was improved and the burdensome computation was lightened. This paper studies the consensus fault-tolerant control problem of a class of second-order leader-follower multi-agent systems with unknown disturbance and actuator faults, and proposes an integral non-singular terminal sliding mode control algorithm based on a finite-time observer. First, a finite-time disturbance observer was designed based on a combination of high-order sliding mode and dual layers adaptive rules to realize fast estimation and compensation of disturbance and faults. Then, a sliding surface with additional integral links was designed based on the conventional sliding surface, and an integral non-singular terminal sliding mode controller is proposed to realize the robust consensus in finite time and accurately diminish the chattering phenomena. Finally, a numerical example and simulation verify the effectiveness.

Researchers around the globe have contributed for many years to the research field of fault-tolerant control; the importance of this field is ever increasing as a consequence of the rising complexity of technical systems, the enlarging importance of electronics and software as well as the widening share of interconnected and cloud solutions. This field was supplemented in recent years by fault-tolerant design. Two main goals of fault-tolerant design can be distinguished. The first main goal is the improvement of the controllability and diagnosability of technical systems through intelligent design. The second goal is the enhancement of the fault-tolerance of technical systems by means of inherently fault-tolerant design characteristics. Inherently fault-tolerant design characteristics are, for instance, redundancy or over-actuation. This paper describes algorithms, methods and tools of fault-tolerant design and an application of the concept to an automated guided vehicle (AGV). This application took place on different levels ranging from conscious requirements management to redundant elements, which were consciously chosen, on the most concrete level of a technical system, i.e., the product geometry. The main scientific contribution of the paper is a methodical framework for fault-tolerant design, as well as certain algorithms and methods within this framework. The underlying motivation is to support engineers in design and control trough product development process transparency and appropriate algorithms and methods.

In this research, a novel control method is proposed for 3-Phase Induction Motor (3-PIM) drives with star-connected under Single-Phase Open-Circuit (SPOC) fault using modified Rotor Field-Oriented Control (RFOC) strategy. The standard RFOC strategy is designed based on the d-q model of 3-PIM during normal mode. This strategy cannot be applied for a 3-PIM under SPOC fault as the model of a healthy 3-PIM is different from the model of a faulty 3-PIM. The use of standard RFOC strategy for Vector Control (VC) of a 3-PIM under SPOC fault increases the electromagnetic torque ripples during this fault. To overcome this problem, two unbalanced rotational transformations are used. A Current Transformation Matrix (CTM) is obtained based on the concept of maintaining value of Magnetic Motive Force (MMF) of the faulted machine like the healthy machine. Then, a Voltage Transformation Matrix (VTM) is introduced by using the presented CTM and according to the Single-Phase Induction Motor (SPIM) model. Based on the results, faulted machine RFOC equations were obtained similar to the healthy machine RFOC equations by using the CTM and VTM. The proposed technique was verified by simulations and experiments. Faults frequently occur in the sensors and actuators of process machines to cause shutdown and process interruption, thereby creating costly production loss. centrifugal compressors (CCs) are the most used equipment in process industries such as oil and gas, petrochemicals, and fertilizers. A compressor control system called an anti-surge control (ASC) system based on many critical sensors and actuators is used for the safe operation of CCs. In this paper, an advanced active fault-tolerant control system (AFTCS) has been proposed for sensor and actuator faults of the anti-surge control system of a centrifugal compressor. The AFTCS has been built with a dedicated fault detection and isolation (FDI) unit to detect and isolate the faulty part as well as replace the faulty value with the virtual redundant value from the observer model running in parallel with the other healthy sensors. The analytical redundancy is developed from the mathematical modeling of the sensors to provide estimated values to the controller in case the actual sensor fails. Dual hardware redundancy has been proposed for the anti-surge valve (ASV). The simulation results of the proposed Fault-tolerant control (FTC) for the ASC system in the experimentally validated CC HYSYS model reveal that the system continued to operate in the event of faults in the sensors and actuators maintaining system stability. The proposed FTC for the ASC system is novel in the literature and significant for the process industries to design a highly reliable compressor control system that would continue operation despite faults in the sensors and actuators, hence preventing costly production loss.

This paper provides two bounded finite-time control strategies for the stabilization problem of Euler-Lagrange (EL) systems exposed to actuator failures. By the combination of sliding mode technology and adaptive method, two control architectures have been constructed such that the system states will be forced towards the origin within finite time. The first controller is applicable in the case that exact information of the external disturbance and actuator faults are available. However, it still remains challenging for designers to obtain this sort of information in engineering practice. On account for this, adaptive laws are applied in the second controller to obtain estimations about the unknown parameters, thus ensuring desirable fault-tolerance ability and robustness for the EL systems. By resorting to the properties of EL systems and hyperbolic tangent functions, outputs of these two controllers will be proven to be bounded. This work investigates sensor fault diagnostics and fault-tolerant control for a voltage source converter based microgrid (model) using a sliding-mode observer. It aims to provide a diagnosis of multiple faults (i.e., magnitude, phase, and harmonics) occurring simultaneously or individually in current/potential transformers. A modified algorithm based on convex optimization is used to determine the gains of the sliding-mode observer, which utilizes the feasibility optimization or trace minimization of a Ricatti equation-based modification of H-Infinity (H∞) constrained linear matrix inequalities. The fault and disturbance estimation method is modified and improved with some corrections in previous works. The stability and finite-time reachability of the observers are also presented for the considered faulty and perturbed microgrid system. A proportional-integral (PI) based control is utilized for the conventional regulations required for frequency and voltage sags occurring in a microgrid. However, the same control block features fault-tolerant control (FTC) functionality. It is attained by incorporating a sliding-mode observer to reconstruct the faults of sensors (transformers), which are fed to the control block after correction. Simulation-based analysis is performed by presenting the results of state/output estimation, state/output estimation errors, fault reconstruction, estimated disturbances, and fault-tolerant control performance. Simulations are performed for sinusoidal, constant, linearly increasing, intermittent, sawtooth, and random sort of often occurring sensor faults. However, this paper includes results for the sinusoidal nature voltage/current sensor (transformer) fault and a linearly increasing type of fault, whereas the remaining results are part of the supplementary data file. The comparison analysis is performed in terms of observer gains being estimated by previously used techniques as compared to the proposed modified approach. It also includes the comparison of the voltage-frequency control implemented with and without the incorporation of the used observer based fault estimation and corrections, in the control block. The faults here are considered for voltage/current sensor transformers, but the approach works for a wide range of sensors.

In this paper, an active fault-tolerant tracking control scheme for the turbofan engine under dynamic and simultaneous actuator faults and sensor faults under disturbances is proposed. First, based on the linear parameter-varying model of the turbofan engine, an H ∞ state feedback nominal controller is designed so as to achieve rotor speed tracking control with adaptive gain scheduling characteristics at different working conditions for the turbofan engine. Next, for the control system with simultaneous multiplicative actuator faults and additive sensor faults, a virtual actuator based active fault-tolerant tracking control strategy is developed to reconfigure the system such that it can obtain the similar behavior to the fault-free system without modifying the nominal controller. Specifically, in addition to handle the actuator fault by the virtual actuator, the reconfigured controller adopts a feedforward control signal to compensate for the sensor fault. Besides, in order to guarantee the reconfigured system, a sufficiency criterion is proposed. In this paper, a neural adaptive fault-tolerant control scheme is proposed for the integrated attitude and position control of spacecraft proximity operations in the presence of unknown parameters, disturbances, and actuator faults. The proposed controller is made up of a relative attitude control law and a relative position control law. Both the relative attitude control law and relative position control law are designed by adopting the neural networks (NNs) to approximate the upper bound of the lumped unknowns. Benefiting from the indirect neural approximation, the proposed controller does not need any model information for feedback. In addition, only two adaptive parameters are required for the indirect neural approximation, and the online calculation burden of the proposed controller is therefore significantly reduced. Lyapunov analysis shows that the overall closed-loop system is ultimately uniformly bounded. The proposed controller can ensure the relative attitude, angular velocity, position, and velocity stabilize into the small neighborhoods around the origin. Lastly, the effectiveness and superior performance of the proposed control scheme are confirmed by a simulated example.

This paper investigates the sensor fault detection and fault-tolerant control (FTC) technology of a variable-structure hypersonic flight vehicle (HFV). First, an HFV nonlinear system considering sensor compound faults, disturbance, and the variable structure parameter is established, which is divided into the attitude angle outer and angular rate inner loops. Then a nonlinear fault integrated detector is proposed to detect the moment of fault occurrence and provide the residual to design the sliding mode equations. Furthermore, the sliding mode method combined with the virtual adaptive controller constitutes the outer loop FTC scheme, and the adaptive dynamic surface combined with the disturbance estimation constitutes the inner loop robust controller; these controllers finally realize the direct compensation of the compound sensor faults under the disturbance condition. This scheme does not require fault isolation and diagnosis observer loops; it only uses a variable structure FTC with a direct estimation algorithm and integrated residual to complete the self-repairing stable flight of variable-structure HFV, which exhibits a high reliability and quick response. Lyapunov theory proved the stability of the system, and numerical simulation proved the effectiveness of the FTC scheme.

Using reinforcement learning (RL) for torque distribution of skid steering vehicles has attracted increasing attention recently. Various RL-based torque distribution methods have been proposed to deal with this classical vehicle control problem, achieving a better performance than traditional control methods. However, most RL-based methods focus only on improving the performance of skid steering vehicles, while actuator faults that may lead to unsafe conditions or catastrophic events are frequently omitted in existing control schemes. This study proposes a meta-RL-based fault-tolerant control (FTC) method to improve the tracking performance of vehicles in the case of actuator faults. Based on meta deep deterministic policy gradient (meta-DDPG), the proposed FTC method has a representative gradient-based metalearning algorithm workflow, which includes an offline stage and an online stage. In the offline stage, an experience replay buffer with various actuator faults is constructed to provide data for training the metatraining model; then, the metatrained model is used to develop an online meta-RL update method to quickly adapt its control policy to actuator fault conditions. Simulations of four scenarios demonstrate that the proposed FTC method can achieve a high performance and adapt to actuator fault conditions stably.

To ensure the stability of nonlinear power systems with actuator faults and time delays, this study aims to design an adaptive fuzzy finite-time control scheme. To deal with this control issue, firstly, we propose an adaptive fault-tolerant finite-time controller using backstepping technique. To aid the controller design, fuzzy logic systems are applied to approximate the uncertain nonlinear terms without the prior information. Then, it is proved that the designed controller can ensure the stability in a finite time for the nonlinear power systems with actuator faults and time delays using Lyapunov-Krasovskii method. Fault tolerance is one of the effective methods to improve the reliability of magnetic bearings, and the redundant magnetic bearing provides a feasible measure for fault-tolerant control. The linearization and accuracy of the electromagnetic force (EMF) from the redundant structures is crucial for designing fault-tolerant controllers. In the magnetic bearing with a redundant structure, the current distribution matrix W is an important factor that affects the accuracy of EMF. In this paper, we improved the accuracy of the EMF model and took the eight-pole symmetrical radial magnetic bearing as the research object. The corresponding displacement compensation matrices have been calculated for the different coils that fail in the magnetic bearing while the rotor is at the non-equilibrium position. Then, we propose a fault-tolerant control strategy that includes displacement compensation. The rigid body dynamics model of the rotor, supported by magnetic bearings with redundant structures, is established. Moreover, to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, we combined the rigid body dynamics model of the rotor with a fault-tolerant control strategy, and the corresponding simulation has been carried out. In the case of disturbance force and some coils fail in magnetic bearing and compared with the fault-tolerant control that absents the displacement compensation factors. The simulations demonstrate the disturbance rejection of magnetically levitated rotor system can be enhanced. The robustness of the rotor has been improved with the fault-tolerant control strategy proposed in this paper.

This paper provides a model-parameter-free control strategy for the trajectory tracking problem of the autonomous underwater vehicle exposed to external disturbances and actuator failures. Two control architectures have been constructed such that the system states could be forced to the desired trajectories with acceptable performance. By combining sliding mode control (SMC) technology and adaptive algorithm, the first control architecture is developed for tracking missions under healthy actuators. Taking actuator failures scenario into account, system reliability is improved considerably by the utilization of a passive fault-tolerant technology in the second controller. Benefitting from properties of Euler-Lagrange systems, the nonlinear dynamics of the underwater vehicles could be handled properly such that the proposed controllers could be developed without model parameters. The main purpose of this paper is to develop a high-level performance, and low-cost current sensorless control strategy for Induction Motor (IM) drives. Therefore, a new phase-current regeneration method, for current sensorless vector control in induction motor drives is introduced. The idea is based on the reconfiguration of the Luenberger adaptive observer for currents estimation, using the information provided by the dc-link voltage sensor. The basis of the proposed control and the theoretical study of the modified adaptive observer are presented. Several simulation and experimental tests were performed on an induction motor of 1.1 kW working under different operating conditions. This paper presents a robust Fault-Tolerant Control (FTC) methodology for the design of virtual sensors and virtual actuators for discrete-time Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) systems. Conditions based on Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) are proposed for the synthesis of a reconfiguration block composed of a virtual actuator and a virtual sensor, guaranteeing input-to-state stability (ISS). The main contribution of the proposed FTC approach is to deal with LPV models where input and output matrices can be parameter-dependent. Moreover, differently from results found in the literature, a single reconfiguration block can be designed to be robust to different kinds and magnitudes of faults. Real-time level-control experiments illustrate the efficiency of the proposed procedure; the system used in the experiments consists of a nonlinear two coupled tanks with two inputs and two outputs, represented by an LPV model subject to sensor and actuator faults. Microgrids (MG) treat local energy supply issues effectively and from a point of view of the distribution grid, may be a power supply or virtual load. Despite holding a myriad of benefits, MGs also bear a set of challenges, including a higher fault rate. Currently, many articles focus on control techniques; however, little has been written about the techniques of control, hierarchical control, and fault-tolerant control (FTC) applied to MGs, which is the motive of this bibliographic revision on control systems. A brief comparison of the different approaches in the field of present-day research is carried out primarily addressing hierarchical control and fault tolerance. This paper deals with the anti-synchronization issue for stochastic delayed reaction-diffusion neural networks subject to semi-Markov jump parameters. A resilient fault-tolerant controller is utilized to ensure the anti-synchronization in the presence of actuator failures as well as gain perturbations, simultaneously. Firstly, by means of the Lyapunov functional and stochastic analysis methods, a mean-square exponential stability criterion is derived for the resulting error system. It is shown the obtained criterion improves a previously reported result. Then, based on the present analysis result and using several decoupling techniques, a strategy for designing the desired resilient fault-tolerant controller is proposed. The X-rudder concept has been applied to more and more autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in recent years, since it shows better maneuverability and robustness against rudder failure compared to the traditional cruciform rudder. Aiming at the fault-tolerant control of the X-rudder AUV (hereinafter abbreviated as xAUV), a fault-tolerant steering prototype system which can realize dynamics control, autonomous rudder fault detection and fault-tolerant control is presented in this paper. The steering prototype system is deployed on a verification platform, an xAUV, in which the monitor software is developed based on the factory method and the onboard software is developed based on the finite state machine (FSM). Dual-loop increment feedback control (DIFC) is first introduced to obtain smooth virtual rudder commands considering actuator's limitations. Then the virtual rudder commands are transformed into X-rudder commands based on the mapping theory. In rudder fault diagnosis, an optimized particle filter is proposed for estimating rudder effect deduction, with proposal distribution derived from unscented Kalman filter (UKF). Then the fault type can be determined by analyzing indicators related to the deduction. Fault-tolerant control is addressed by dealing with nonlinear programming (NLP) problem, where minimization of allocation errors and control efforts are set as the optimization objectives, and rudder failure, saturation and actuators limitations are considered as constraints. The fixed-point iteration method is utilized to solve this optimization problem. Many field tests have been conducted in towing tank. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed steering prototype system is able to detect rudder faults and is robust against rudder failure.

Capture and control of a failed spacecraft can be achieved by a space manipulator installed in a service spacecraft. After this target has been captured, the combined spacecraft must be controlled in a prescribed way. The attitude attacking control of the combined spacecraft system is one major challenge since the mass properties of the whole spacecraft system and configuration matrix of the reaction wheels change, especially when actuator fault occurs. In this paper, a nonlinear disturbance-observer-based fault-tolerant attitude control scheme is developed for the combined spacecraft with prescribed performance. Firstly, an approach is given to reconstruct the attitude tracking dynamics of the combined spacecraft with reaction wheels. Then, a fault-tolerant controller, based on dynamic surface method and nonlinear extended state observer, is developed whereby performance in the light of convergence time, stability and accuracy with inertia uncertainty, actuator saturation and external disturbance can be prescribed. Designing electrical drives resistant to the failures of chosen sensors has recently become increasingly popular due to the possibility of their use in fault-tolerant control (FTC) systems including drives for electric vehicles. In this article, a virtual current sensor (VCS) based on an algorithmic method for the reconstruction of the induction motor (IM) phase currents after current sensor faults was proposed. This stator current estimator is based only on the measurements of the DC-bus voltage in the intermediate circuit of the voltage-source inverter (VSI) and a rotor speed. This proposal is dedicated to fault-tolerant vector controlled IM drives, where it is necessary to switch to scalar control as a result of damage to the current sensors. The proposed VCS allows further uninterrupted operation of the direct rotor-field oriented control (DRFOC) of the induction motor drive. The stator current estimator has been presented in the form of equations, enabling its practical implementation in a microprocessor system. Simulation studies of the proposed algorithm in an open and closed-loop DRFOC structure are presented under different operation conditions of the drive system. The experimental verification of the proposed method is also presented and the accuracy of the stator current estimation algorithm is analyzed under various operating conditions of the drive system.

A dynamic model of a hexacopter is first derived to develop a model-based fault detection system. Secondly, the altitude control based on a sliding mode and disturbance observer is presented to tackle the disturbance issue. Then, a nonlinear Thau observer is applied to estimate the states of a hexacopter and to generate the residuals. Using a fault detection unit, the motor failure is isolated to address the one or two actuator faults. Finally, experimental results are tested on a DJI F550 hexacopter platform and Pixhawk2 flight controller to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Unlike previous studies, this work can integrate fault detection and fault-tolerant control design as a single unit.
