C 18 branched saturated fatty acids (BSFA) are used as ingredients in cosmetics and lubricants and are produced via the hydrogenation of C 18 branched unsaturated fatty acids (BUFA). Industrial-grade C 18 BUFA contain the odorous by-product γ-stearolactone (GSL), which must be removed by acid-catalysed ring-opening of GSL into oleic acid. Zeolites such as Y and beta can facilitate the ring-opening, but due to the dimensions of GSL the activity is expected to be limited by diffusion into the micropores. Hence, zeolites Y and beta were modified via hydrothermal treatment and acid leaching and used in the GSL ring-opening reaction. While modification of zeolite beta led to a reduction in acidity of more than 50%, the material displayed much-enhanced activity compared to the parent material. In a batch reactor steamed beta zeolites were able to convert all GSL within 2 h, compared to 5 h for the parent zeolite. Infrared spectroscopy studies of adsorbed pyridine reveal that likely a beneficial change in Brønsted/Lewis acid site ratio is responsible for the increased activity. Lewis acid sites in zeolites are known to catalyse double bond isomerisation, which could greatly enhance GSL conversion by reducing the reverse formation of GSL from oleic acid. Recent scientific advances in the valorization of lignin, through e.g., (partial-)catalytic depolymerization, require equally state-of-the-art approaches for the analysis of the obtained depolymerized lignins (DLs) or lignin bio-oils. The use of chemometrics in combination with infrared (IR) spectroscopy is one avenue to provide rapid access to pertinent lignin parameters, such as molecular weight (MW) characteristics, which typically require analysis via time-consuming size-exclusion methods, or diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy. Importantly, MW serves as a marker for the degree of depolymerization (or recondensation) that the lignin has undergone, and thus probing this parameter is essential for the optimization of depolymerization conditions to achieve DLs with desired properties. Here, we show that our ATR-IR-based chemometrics approach used previously for technical lignin analysis can be extended to analyze these more processed, lignin-derived samples as well. Remarkably, also at this lower end of the MW scale, the use of partial least-squares (PLS) regression models well-predicted the MW parameters for a sample set of 57 depolymerized lignins, with relative errors of 9.9-11.2%. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA) showed good correspondence with features in the regression vectors for each of the biomass classes (hardwood, herbaceous/grass, and softwood) obtained from PLS-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). To expedite the valorisation of lignin as a sustainable component in materials applications, rapid and generally available analytical methods are essential to overcome the bottleneck of lignin characterisation. Where features of a lignin's chemical structure have previously been found to be predicted by Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression models built on Infrared (IR) data, we now show for the first time that this approach can be extended to prediction of the glass transition temperature (T g ), a key physicochemical property. This methodology is shown to be convenient and more robust for prediction of T g than prediction through empirically derived relationships (e. g., Flory-Fox). The chemometric analysis provided root mean squared errors of prediction (RMSEP) as low as 10.0 °C for a botanically, and a process-diverse set of lignins, and 6.2 °C for kraft-only samples. The PLS models could separately predict both the T g as well as the degree of allylation (% allyl ) for allylated lignin fractions, which were all derived from a single lignin source. The models performed exceptionally well, delivering RMSEP of 6.1 °C, and 5.4 %, respectively, despite the conflicting influences of increasing molecular weight and % allyl on T g . To reduce the pressure on the environment created by the increasing amount of plastic waste, the need to develop suitable plastic recycling methods has become more evident. However, the chemical recycling toolbox for polyethylene (PE), the most abundant type of plastic waste, remains underdeveloped. In this work, analytical methods were developed to explore the possibility to oxidatively convert PE into di-carboxylic acids as reaction products. A multi-analytical approach including gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, gas chromatography-flame ionization detection, several (2D) nuclear magnetic resonance methods as well as in-situ transmission infrared spectroscopy was used. This led to a thorough qualitative and quantitative analysis on the product mixture, which extends and clarifies the existing literature. Without a catalyst (thermally) already up to 7 mol % di-carboxylic acids can be formed. Furthermore, it was found that the majority of the oxidized functionalities are carboxylic acids, (methyl) ketones, γ-lactones, γ-ketones and esters. An intra-molecular hydrogen shift seemed key in the cleavage step and the formation of late-stage side products. In addition, crosslinking reactions due to esterification reactions seem to limit the di-carboxylic acid yield. Humins, (side-)products of the acid-catalysed dehydration of carbohydrates, will be produced in substantial quantities with the development of industrial biorefining processes. Most structural knowledge about such humins is based on synthetic model humins prepared at lab-scale from typical carbohydrate(-derived) compounds. Here, we report the first extensive characterisation study of an industrial humin. The soluble humin was generated from pilot plant-scale methanolic cyclodehydration of D-fructose to 5-methoxymethyl-2-furfural (MMF), as part of the Avantium YXY® process to produce FDCA. Purification of the industrial humin followed by fractionation allowed isolation of a water-insoluble, high molecular weight fraction (WIPIH) and a water-soluble, low-to-middle molecular weight soluble fraction (WES). Characterisation by elemental analysis, thermogravimetry, IR and NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography provided a detailed picture of the humin structure in both fractions. Aided by a comprehensive NMR spectral library of furanic model compounds, we identified the main furanic building blocks and inter-unit linkages and propose a structure for this industrial humin sample. The WIPIH and WES fractions were found to be composed of furanic rings interconnected by short aliphatic chains containing a wide range of functionalities including alcohols, ethers, carboxylic acids, esters, aldehydes and ketones. The low level of crosslinking and high functional group content of the industrial humin differ from the more extensively studied, (highly over-)condensed synthetic model humins, towards which they can be considered intermediates. Polyolefin catalysts are characterized by their hierarchically complex nature, which complicates studies on the interplay between the catalyst and formed polymer phases. Here, the missing link in the morphology gap between planar model systems and industrially relevant spherical catalyst particles is introduced through the use of a spherical cap Ziegler-type catalyst model system for the polymerization of ethylene. More specifically, a moisture-stable LaOCl framework with enhanced imaging contrast has been designed to support the TiCl 4 pre-active site, which could mimic the behaviour of the highly hygroscopic and industrially used MgCl 2 framework. As a function of polymerization time, the fragmentation behaviour of the LaOCl framework changed from a mixture of the shrinking core (i.e., peeling off small polyethylene fragments at the surface) and continuous bisection (i.e., internal cleavage of the framework) into dominantly a continuous bisection model, which is linked to the evolution of the estimated polyethylene volume and the fraction of crystalline polyethylene formed. Technical lignins are increasingly available at industrial scale, offering opportunities for valorization, such as by (partial) depolymerization. Any downstream lignin application requires careful tailoring of structural properties, such as molecular weight or functional group density, properties that are difficult to control or predict given the structure variability and recalcitrance of technical lignins. Online insight into changes in molecular weight (M w ), to gauge the extent of lignin depolymerization and repolymerization, would be highly desired to improve such control, but cannot be readily provided by the standard ex-situ techniques, such as size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Herein, operando attenuated total reflectance infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy combined with chemometrics provided temporal changes in M w during lignin depolymerization with high resolution. More specifically, ex-situ SEC-derived M w and polydispersity data of kraft lignin subjected to aqueous phase reforming conditions could be well correlated with ATR-IR spectra of the reaction mixture as a function of time. The developed method showed excellent regression results and relative error, comparable to the standard SEC method. Fourier-transform mid-infrared spectrometry is an attractive technology for screening adulterated liquid milk products. So far, studies on how infrared spectroscopy can be used to screen spectra for atypical milk composition have either used targeted methods to test for specific adulterants, or have used untargeted screening methods that do not reveal in what way the spectra are atypical. In this study, we evaluate the potential of combining untargeted screening methods with cluster algorithms to indicate in what way a spectrum is atypical and, if possible, why. We found that a combination of untargeted screening methods and cluster algorithms can reveal meaningful and generalizable categories of atypical milk spectra. We demonstrate that spectral information (e.g., the compositional milk profile) and meta-data associated with their acquisition (e.g., at what date and which instrument) can be used to understand in what way the milk is atypical and how it can be used to form hypotheses about the underlying causes. Thereby, it was indicated that atypical milk screening can serve as a valuable complementary quality assurance tool in routine FTIR milk analysis.

Lignin is an attractive material for the production of renewable chemicals, materials and energy. However, utilization is hampered by its highly complex and variable chemical structure, which requires an extensive suite of analytical instruments to characterize. Here, we demonstrate that straightforward attenuated total reflection (ATR)-FTIR analysis combined with principle component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS) modelling can provide remarkable insight into the structure of technical lignins, giving quantitative results that are comparable to standard gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) and 2D heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC) NMR methods. First, a calibration set of 54 different technical (fractionated) lignin samples, covering kraft, soda and organosolv processes, were prepared and analyzed using traditional GPC and NMR methods, as well as by readily accessible ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. PLS models correlating the ATR-FTIR spectra of the broad set of lignins with GPC and NMR measurements were found to have excellent coefficients of determination (R 2 Cal.>0.85) for molecular weight (M n , M w ) and inter-unit abundances (β-O-4, β-5 and β-β), with low relative errors (6.2-14 %) as estimated from cross-validation results. PLS analysis of a second set of 28 samples containing exclusively (fractionated) kraft lignins showed further improved prediction ability, with relative errors of 3.8-13 %, and the resulting model could predict the structural characteristics of an independent validation set of lignins with good accuracy. Within a fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit, a mixture of catalyst particles that consist of either zeolite Y (FCC-Y) or ZSM-5 (FCC-ZSM-5) is used in order to boost the propylene yield when processing crude oil fractions. Mixtures of differently aged FCC-Y and FCC-ZSM-5 particles circulating in the FCC unit, the so-called equilibrium catalyst (Ecat), are routinely studied to monitor the overall efficiency of the FCC process. In this study, the age of individual catalyst particles is evaluated based upon photographs after selective staining with substituted styrene molecules. The observed color changes are linked to physical properties, such as the micropore volume and catalytic cracking activity data. Furthermore, it has been possible to determine the relative amount of FCC-Y and FCC-ZSM-5 in an artificial series of physical mixtures as well as in an Ecat sample with unknown composition. As a result, a new practical tool is introduced in the field of zeolite catalysis to evaluate FCC catalyst performances on the basis of photo-spectroscopic measurements with an off-the-shelf digital single lens reflex (DSLR) photo-camera with a macro lens. The results also demonstrate that there is an interesting time and cost trade-off between single catalyst particle studies, as performed with e.g. UV-vis, synchrotron-based IR and fluorescence micro-spectroscopy, and many catalyst particle photo-spectroscopy studies, making use of a relatively simple DSLR photo-camera. The latter approach offers clear prospects for the quality control of e.g. FCC catalyst manufacturing plants.

Straightforward analysis of chemical processes on the nanoscale is difficult, as the measurement volume is linked to a discrete number of molecules, ruling out any ensemble averaging over rotation and diffusion processes. Raman spectroscopy is sufficiently selective for monitoring chemical changes, but is not sufficiently sensitive to be applied directly. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) can be applied for studying reaction kinetics, but adds additional variability in the signal as the enhancement factor is not the same for every location. A novel chemometric method described here separates reaction kinetics from short-term variability, based on the lack of fit in a principal-component analysis. We show that it is possible to study effects that occur on different time scales independently without data reduction using the photocatalytic reduction of p-nitrothiophenol as a showcase system. Using this approach a better description of the nanoscale reaction kinetics becomes available, while the short-term variations can be examined separately to examine reorientation and/or diffusion effects. It may even be possible to identify reaction intermediates through this approach. With only a limited number of reactive molecules in the studied volume, an intermediate on a SERS hot spot may temporarily dominate the spectrum. The solid state and solution structure of a series of lanthanide complexes of the decadentate ligand triethylenetetramine-N,N,N',N'',N''',N'''-hexaacetamide, (ttham), its two decadentate derivatives di-tert-butyl N,N,N''',N'''-tetra(carbamoylmethyl)-triethylenetetramine-N',N''-diacetate (Bu(2)ttha-tm) and N,N,N''',N'''-tetra(carbamoylmethyl)-triethylenetetramine-N',N''-diacetic acid (H(2)ttha-tm), and its two nonadentate derivatives N-benzyl-triethylenetetramine-N,N',N'',N''',N'''-pentaacetamide (1bttpam) and N'-benzyl-triethylenetetramine-N,N,N'',N''',N'''-pentaacetamide (4bttpam) have been investigated by infrared and Raman spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, cyclovoltammetry, and NMR spectroscopy. In these mononuclear lanthanide complexes, the first coordination sphere is generally saturated by four amine nitrogens of the triethylenetetramine ligand backbone and five or six carbonyl oxygen atoms of the pendent amide or acetate donor groups. In the [Ln(ttham)](3+) complex series, a switch from a decadentate to a nonadentate coordination occurs between [Er(ttham)](3+) and [Tm(ttham)](3+). This switch in coordination mode, which is caused by decreasing metal ion radii going from lanthanum to lutetium (lanthanide contraction), has no significant effect on the T(1)-relaxivity of these complexes. It is shown that the T(1)-relaxivity is dominated by second coordination sphere interactions, with an ascendant contribution of the classical dipolar relaxation mechanism for the earlier (Ce-Sm) and very late (Tm, Yb) lanthanides, and a prevailing Curie relaxation mechanism for most of the remaining paramagnetic lanthanide ions. In chemical exchange-dependent saturation transfer (CEST) (1)H NMR experiments, most of the above complexes exhibit multiple strong CEST peaks of the paramagnetically shifted amide protons spread over a >100 ppm chemical shift range. The effective CEST effect of the studied thulium complexes strongly depends on temperature and pH. The pH at which the CEST effect maximizes (generally between pH 7 and 8) is determined by the overall charge of the complex. Depending on the used saturation frequency offset, the temperature-dependence varies between the extremes of strongly linearly dependent and fully independent in the case of [Tm(ttham)](3+). In combination with the strong pH-dependence of the CEST effect at the latter frequency offset, this complex is highly suitable for simultaneous temperature and pH mapping using magnetic resonance imaging.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to study the impregnation step during the preparation of Ni/gamma-Al(2)O(3) hydrogenation catalysts with Ni(2+) metal ion present in different coordinations. The precursor complexes were [Ni(H(2)O)(6)](2+) and [Ni(edtaH(x))]((2-x)-) (where x = 0, 1, 2 and edta = ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), representing a nonshielded and a shielded paramagnetic complex, respectively. Due to this shielding effect of the ligands, the dynamics of [Ni(H(2)O)(6)](2+) or [Ni(edtaH(x))]((2-x)-) were visualized applying T(2) or T(1) image contrast, respectively. MRI was applied in a quantitative manner to calculate the [Ni(H(2)O)(6)](2+) concentration distribution after impregnation when it was present alone in the impregnation solution, or together with the [Ni(edtaH(x))]((2-x)-) species. Moreover, the combination of MRI with UV-vis microspectroscopy allowed the visualization of both species with complementary information on the dynamics and adsorption/desorption phenomena within gamma-Al(2)O(3) catalyst bodies. These phenomena yielded nonuniform Ni distributions after impregnation, which are interesting for certain industrial applications.

Research has been carried on the feasibility of near infrared (NIR) and Raman spectroscopy as rapid screening methods to discriminate between genuine and counterfeits of the cholesterol-lowering medicine Lipitor. Classification, based on partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) models, appears to be successful for both spectroscopic techniques, irrespective of whether atorvastatine or lovastatine has been used as the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). The discriminative power of the NIR model, in particular, largely relies on the spectral differences of the tablet matrix. This is due to the relative large sample volume that is probed with NIR and the strong spectroscopic activity of the excipients. PLS-DA models based on NIR or Raman spectra can also be applied to distinguish between atorvastatine and lovastatine as the API used in the counterfeits tested in this study. A disadvantage of Raman microscopy for this type of analysis is that it is primarily a surface technique. As a consequence spectra of the coating and the tablet core might differ. Besides, spectra may change with the position of the laser in case the sample is inhomogeneous. However, the robustness of the PLS-DA models turned out to be sufficiently large to allow a reliable discrimination. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the spectra revealed that the conditions, at which tablets have been stored, affect the NIR data. This effect is attributed to the adsorption of water from the atmosphere after unpacking from the blister. It implies that storage conditions should be taken into account when the NIR technique is used for discriminating purposes. However, in this study both models based on NIR spectra and Raman data enabled reliable discrimination between genuine and counterfeited Lipitor tablets, regardless of their storage conditions.

Research has been carried out to determine the feasibility of chemometric modeling of infrared (IR) and near-infrared (NIR) spectra of crude oils to predict the long residue (LR) and short residue (SR) properties of these samples. A novel method is described to predict short residue properties at different flashing temperatures based on the IR spectrum of a crude oil measured at room temperature. The resulting method is the subject of European patent application number 07251853.3 filed by Shell Internationale Research Maatschappij B.V. The study has been carried out on 47 crude oils and 4 blends, representing a large variety of physical and chemical properties. From this set, 28 representative samples were selected by principle component analysis (PCA) and used for calibration. The remaining 23 samples were used as a test set to validate the obtained partial least squares (PLS) regression models. The results demonstrate that this integrated approach offers a fast and viable alternative for the currently applied elaborate ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) and IP (Institute of Petroleum) methods. IR spectra, in particular, were found to be a useful input for the prediction of different LR properties. Root mean square error of prediction values of the same order of magnitude as the reproducibility values of the ASTM methods were obtained for yield long on crude (YLC), density (D(LR)), viscosity (V(LR)), and pour point (PP), while the ability to predict the sulfur contents (S) and the carbon residue (CR) was found to be useful for indicative purposes. The prediction of SR properties is also promising. Modeling of the IR spectra, and to a lesser extent, the NIR spectra as a function of the average flash temperature (AFT) was particularly successful for the prediction of the short residue properties density (D(SR)) and viscosity (V(SR)). Similar results were obtained from the models to predict SR properties as a function of the yield short on crude (YSC) values. Finally, it was concluded that the applied protocol including sample pretreatment and instrumental measurement is highly reproducible and instrument and accessory independent.

Here, successful realization of a variable multivariate optical element (VMOE) based on a transmissive liquid crystal (LC) panel is reported. In contrast to conventional multivariate optical elements (MOEs), a single VMOE is a dynamic system, allowing measurement of numerous analytes in different mixtures. Furthermore, VMOE has superior spectral resolution in comparison to a conventional MOE. It is demonstrated here that the system implemented in a Raman spectrometer predicts the concentration of each individual component in toluene-acetonitrile-cyclohexane mixtures with a prediction error of <6% (mass percentage). With a dedicated optical design of the setup, a prediction error smaller than 2% is expected to be feasible for the current chemical system.

Aqueous solutions of Cu2+/histidine (his) (1:2) have been analyzed in parallel with infrared, Raman, ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared, electron spin resonance, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the pH range from 0 to 10. Comprehensive interpretation of the data has been used to extract complementary structural information in order to determine the relative abundance of the different complexes. The formation of six different, partly coexisting species is proposed. Structural proposals from literature have been unambiguously confirmed, refined, or, in several cases, corrected. At highly acidic conditions, Cu2+ and his are present as free ions, but around pH = 2, coordination starts via the deprotonated carboxylic acid group. This results in the intermediate species Cu2+[H3his+(Oc)] and Cu2+[H3his+(Oc)]2. The coordination via Oc is attended with a drop in the pKa value of the other receptor groups resulting in a concomitant conversion to the bidentates Cu2+[H2his0(Oc,Nam)] and Cu2+[H2his0(Oc,Nam)]2, with the latter being dominant at pH = 3.5. Coordination of the imidazole ring begins around pH = 3 and leads to the formation of the mixed ligand complexes Cu2+[H2his0(Oc,Nam)][Hhis-(Oc,Nam,Nim)] and Cu2+[Hhis-(Nam,Nim)][Hhis-(Oc,Nam,Nim)] around pH = 5. It is demonstrated that coordination of the imidazole ring occurs predominantly via the N(pi) atom. At pH > 7, the double-tridentate ligand complex Cu2+[Hhis-(Oc,Nam,Nim)]2 is the major species with the N atoms in the equatorial plane and the O atoms in the axial position. This complex decomposes at pH > 10 into a copper oxide/hydroxide precipitate. The overall results provide a consistent picture of the mechanism that drives the coordination and complex formation of the Cu2+/his system.

The physicochemical processes that occur during the preparation of CoMo-Al2O3 hydrodesulfurization catalyst bodies have been investigated. To this end, the distribution of Mo and Co complexes, after impregnation of gamma-Al2O3 pellets with different CoMoP solutions (i.e., solutions containing Co, Mo, and phosphate), was monitored by Raman and UV-visible-NIR microspectroscopy. From the speciation of the different complexes over the catalyst bodies, insight was obtained into the interaction of the different components in the impregnation solution with the Al2O3 surface. It is shown that, after impregnation with a solution containing H2PMo11CoO40(5-), the reaction of phosphate with the Al2O3 leads to the disintegration of this complex. The consecutive independent transport of Co2+ complexes (fast) and Mo6+ complexes (slow) through the pores of the Al2O3 is envisaged. By the addition of extra phosphate and citrate to the impregnation solution, the formation of the desired heteropolyanion can be achieved inside the pellets. Ultimately, the H2PMo11CoO40(5-) distribution could be controlled by varying the aging time applied after impregnation. The power of a combination of spatially resolved spectroscopic techniques to monitor the preparation of supported catalyst bodies is illustrated.

Current techniques used in clinical laboratories for faecal fat determination, such as the Van de Kamer method, are not very accurate or precise. This became apparent when results obtained by different laboratories were compared, and could explain the disappointing performance of near-infrared and mid-infrared spectroscopy since the accuracy of these techniques depends upon the accuracy of the calibration used (i.e. inaccurate wet chemical analysis). In order to improve standardization, we developed and tested a new quantitative method in three laboratories, based on Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Fatty acids were extracted from faecal samples with acidified petroleum ether-ethanol and the extracts were dried and dissolved in chloroform. An infrared spectrum of the extracts was recorded in the range 4000-650 cm(-1), using an infrared transmission cell. Standard mixtures of stearic and palmitic acids (65:35) were used for calibration. Quantification was based on the absorbance band of the CH2 group (2855 cm(-1)) of free fatty acids and fatty acid glycerol esters. The calibration curve showed excellent linearity. The correlation coefficient between the titrimetric Van de Kamer and FT-IR methods was 0.96 (y = 1.12x-0.02, standard error of prediction = 0.89 g% fat). No significant difference was found when the FT-IR results of 28 faecal samples from patients were compared between two different university hospital laboratories. The new FT-IR method, using primary standards, is simple and rapid, and provides satisfactory intra- and inter-laboratory precision for the diagnosis and monitoring of steatorrhoea.
