Dentists play a pivotal role in the early detection of oral cancer. Consequently, they are expected to possess the knowledge and the capability to recognize the features of this disease. The objective of the study is to evaluate dentists from different regions of Brazil regarding their level of knowledge and self-confidence regarding oral cancer. An online self-administered questionnaire was completed by dentists across Brazil registered on the TelessaúdeRS-UFRGS platform. This questionnaire encompassed inquiries related to knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding oral cancer. A total of 1291 dentists from all regions of the country responded to the questionnaire. The majority of participants were females (75.5%), with an average age of 36.3 years, predominantly from the public sector (46.8%). A reasonable level of knowledge regarding oral cancer was observed among dentists, although 48.6% of these professionals felt uncertain about diagnosis procedures. Dentists less than 8 years since graduation perceived themselves as more prepared to perform oral cancer diagnoses than those with more experience. Around 55% of participants had never performed a biopsy. Based on the obtained results, it is concluded that continuous education activities focused on oral cancer and implementing practical training during undergraduate studies are imperative. These strategies can improve professionals' self-confidence and diagnostic accuracy, thereby facilitating early disease diagnosis and, consequently, a more favorable prognosis., (© 2024. This analytical, cross-sectional, observational study aimed to evaluate the perception of dentists working at the public system of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, regarding academic training to treat oral lesions, adoption of preventive measures for oral cancer, and attitude toward the need to perform oral biopsies. The sample consisted of questionnaires filled out by 192 dentists (153 women and 39 men) working in primary health care who participated in training activities on oral cancer diagnosis in July 2016. To enroll in the training activities, the professionals completed an online questionnaire to evaluate their perceptions regarding oral cancer issues. With respect to preventive measures, 96.88% of dentists reported performing full mouth examination, 87.50% reported providing tobacco cessation counseling, and 51.04% reported giving advice on excessive alcohol consumption. In addition, 72.40% and 44.79% of dentists considered, respectively, clinical training and theory instruction in oral medicine to be insufficient during undergraduate school. Only 8.33% reported performing biopsies in daily clinical routine, and almost 90% reported referring the patient to a specialist from the public system or universities. Lack of experience was the main reason not to perform a biopsy. The dentists in our sample recognize the importance of preventive measures for oral cancer, but few of them perform biopsies regularly. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) has been widely used in the correction of wrinkles because of its long-lasting cosmetic improvements. However, side effects and complications may occur, and its clinical appearance on the oral mucosa can be similar to that of inflammatory or neoplastic disease. The aim of this research was to compare the clinical and histopathologic responses to PMMA injected by two different methods. Twenty-two rats received an injection of PMMA using the tunneling technique (gold standard), with subcutaneous deposition of the filler in the face, or a variation of the technique with transcutaneous submucosal deposition of the filler in the cheek. The tissue reaction was analyzed clinically every 24 hours during the first week, then once a week for the following 3 months. Histologic evaluation was based on the local inflammatory response to the filler. No clinical changes were observed during the initial evaluation period (0-14 days). After 14 days, only the submucosal group showed extra-oral enlargement (n=4, 18.2%). Histopathologic analysis revealed nodule formation in four animals (18.2%) in the submucosal group, with no nodules observed in the subcutaneous group. The data obtained in this study demonstrate that the technique used to deliver the filler may influence the risk of adverse reactions.
