Diradicals based on a meta-quinodimethane (m-QDM) scaffold generally have a triplet ground state and are rather scarce. Herein, m-QDM-based non-Kekulé diradicals [3,3'-(NHC) 2 BP] (3-NHC) (NHC = SIPr = C{N(Dipp)CH 2 } 2 ; IPr = C{N(Dipp)CH} 2 , Me-IPr = C{N(Dipp)CMe} 2 ; Dipp = 2,6-iPr 2 C 6 H 3 ; BP = 1,1'-C 6 H 4 C 6 H 4 ) featuring N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) pendants are reported as crystalline solids. The EPR spectra of 3-NHC show both allowed (Δm s = 1) and forbidden (Δm s = 2; 'half-field') transitions characteristic for triplet diradicals. Variable temperature EPR studies however reveal a singlet ground state for 3-SIPr. Consistent with the EPR spectra, calculations predict a remarkably small singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE ST ≤ 0.26 kcal/mol) for the 3-NHC compounds. We present the design and comprehensive investigation of stable para-substituted triarylamine-2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) radical ion pairs (RIPs) generated via single-electron transfer (SET). We quantified the degree of SET in both solution and solid phases, utilising a suite of spectroscopic techniques including IR, EPR, NMR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD). Our findings reveal that the extent of SET is significantly influenced by the nature of the substituents (MeO > t Bu > Br) and the polarity of the solvent (MeCN > DCM > toluene). The radical ion pair [(pMeOPh) 3 N]⋅ + [DDQ]⋅ - was unambiguously identified using EPR and UV-vis spectroscopy, and its structure was confirmed by SC-XRD. Detailed analysis indicates an open-shell singlet ground state with a thermally accessible triplet state, as corroborated by EPR, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and DFT calculations. Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) with a wide color gamut and high luminescent efficiency are promising for next-generation electronic and photonic devices. However, precise and scalable patterning of QDs without degrading their properties and their integration into commercially relevant devices, such as digitally addressable QD light-emitting diode (QLED) displays, remain challenging. Here, we develop electronically optimized diazirine-based cross-linkers for nondestructive, direct photopatterning of QDs and, ultimately, building the active-matrix QLED displays. The key to the cross-linker design is the introduction of electron-donating substituents that permit the formation of ground-state singlet carbenes for air-stable and benign QD photopatterning. Under ambient conditions, these cross-linkers enable the patterning of heavy metal-free QDs at a resolution of over 13,000 pixels per inch using commercial i-line photolithography. The patterned QD layers fully preserved their optical and optoelectronic properties. Pixelated electroluminescent devices with patterned InP/ZnSe/ZnS QD layers show a peak external quantum efficiency of 15.3% and a maximum luminance of about 40,000 cd m -2 , outperforming those made by existing QD patterning approaches. We further show the seamless integration of patterned QLEDs with thin-film transistor circuits and the fabrication of dual-color active-matrix displays. These results underscore the importance of designing photochemistry for QD patterning, and promise the implementation of direct photopatterning methods in manufacturing commercial QLED displays and other integrated QD device platforms.

The local coordination environment of single atom catalysts (SACs) often determines their catalytic performance. To understand these metal-support interactions, we prepared Pt SACs on cerium dioxide (CeO 2 ) cubes, octahedra and rods, with well-structured exposed crystal facets. The CeO 2 crystals were characterized by SEM, TEM, pXRD, and N 2 sorption, confirming the shape-selective synthesis, identical bulk structure, and variations in specific surface area, respectively. EPR, XPS, TEM and XANES measurements showed differences in the oxygen vacancy density following the trend rods > octahedra > cubes. AC-HAADF-STEM, XPS and CO-DRIFTS measurements confirmed the presence of only single Pt 2+ sites, with different surface platinum surface concentrations. We then compared the performance of the three catalysts in ammonia borane hydrolysis. Precise monitoring of reaction kinetics between 30-80 °C gave Arrhenius plots with hundreds of data points. All plots showed a clear inflection point, the temperature of which (rods > octahedra > cubes) correlates to the energy barrier of ammonia borane diffusion to the Pt sites. These activity differences reflect variations in the - facet dependent - degree of stabilization of intermediates by surface oxygen lone pairs and surface-metal binding strength. Radical-type carbene transfer catalysis is an efficient method for the direct functionalization of C-H and C=C bonds. However, carbene radical complexes are currently formed via high-energy carbene precursors, such as diazo compounds or iodonium ylides. Many of these carbene precursors require additional synthetic steps, have an explosive nature, or generate halogenated waste. Consequently, the utilization of carbene radical catalysis is limited by specific carbene precursors that access the carbene radical intermediate. In this study, we generate a cobalt(III) carbene radical complex from dimethyl malonate, which is commercially available and bench-stable. EPR and NMR spectroscopy were used to identify the intermediates and showed that the cobalt(III) carbene radical complex is formed upon light irradiation. In the presence of styrene, carbene transfer occurred, forming cyclopropane as the product. In recent years, there has been a growing demand for drug design approaches that incorporate a higher number of sp 3 -hybridized carbons, necessitating the development of innovative cross-coupling strategies to reliably introduce aliphatic fragments. Here, we present a powerful approach for the light-mediated B-alkyl Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling between alkyl boranes and aryl bromides. Alkyl boranes were easily generated via hydroboration from readily available alkenes, exhibiting excellent regioselectivity and enabling the selective transfer of a diverse range of primary alkyl fragments onto the arene ring under photocatalytic conditions. This methodology eliminates the need for expensive catalytic systems and sensitive organometallic compounds, operating efficiently at room temperature within just 30 min. We further demonstrate the translation of the present protocol to continuous-flow conditions, enhancing scalability, safety, and overall efficiency of the method. N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) analogues of Wittig hydrocarbon, [(NHC)(Stil)(NHC)] (3a-c) (NHC = SIPr (1a) = C[N(Dipp)CH 2 ] 2 , Dipp = 2,6-iPr 2 C 6 H 3 ; IPr (1b) = C[N(Dipp)CH] 2 ; Me-IPr (1c) = C[N(Dipp)CMe] 2 and Stil = C 6 H 4 CHCHC 6 H 4 ) have been reported as crystalline solids. 3a-c are prepared by two-electron reductions of the corresponding bis-1,3-imidazoli(ni)um bromides [(NHC)(Stil)NHC)](Br) 2 (2a-c) with KC 8 in >94 % yields. 2a-c are accessible by the nickel catalyzed direct C-C coupling of NHCs (1a-c) with (E)-4,4'-dibromostilbene. One-electron oxidation of 3a,b yields the corresponding radical cations [(NHC)(Stil)NHC)]B(C 6 F 5 ) 4 4a,b. All compounds have been characterized by UV-Vis/NMR/EPR spectroscopy as well as 2a, 3a, and 3b by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The field of bioorthogonal chemistry is rapidly growing, presenting successful applications of organic and transition metal-catalysed reactions in cells and living systems (in vivo). The development of such reactions typically proceeds through many iterative steps focused on biocompatibility and fast reaction kinetics to ensure product formation. However, obtaining kinetic data, even under simulated biological (biomimetic) conditions, remains a challenge due to substantial concentrations of salts and biomolecules hampering the use of typically employed solution-phase analytical techniques. In this study, we explored the suitability of gas evolution as a probe to study kinetics under biomimetic conditions. As proof of concept, we show that the progress of two transition metal-catalysed bioorthogonal chemical reactions can be accurately monitored, regardless of the complexity of the medium. As such, we introduce a protocol to gain more insight into the performance of a catalytic system under biomimetic conditions to further progress iterative catalyst development for in vivo applications., (© 2024 The Authors. Performing transition metal-catalyzed reactions in cells and living systems has equipped scientists with a toolbox to study biological processes and release drugs on demand. Thus far, an impressive scope of reactions has been performed in these settings, but many are yet to be introduced. Nitrene transfer presents a rather unexplored new-to-nature reaction. The reaction products are frequently encountered motifs in pharmaceuticals, presenting opportunities for the controlled, intracellular synthesis of drugs. Hence, we explored the transition metal-catalyzed sulfimidation reaction in water for future in vivo application. Two Cu(I) complexes containing trispyrazolylborate ligands (Tp x ) were selected, and the catalytic system was evaluated with the aid of three fitness factors. The excellent nitrene transfer reactivity and high chemoselectivity of the catalysts, coupled with good biomolecule compatibility, successfully enabled the sulfimidation of thioethers in aqueous media. We envision that this copper-catalyzed sulfimidation reaction could be an interesting starting point to unlock the potential of nitrene transfer catalysis in vivo., (© 2023 The Authors. Polyurethane coatings have strong material properties due to the hydrogen bonding inherent to the urethane groups. However, installing this urethane moiety usually requires curing through difficult-to-handle isocyanates. In this work, we show the development of a polyurethane-based crosslinker that can be used to formulate a one-component polyurethane coating with material properties similar to those of isocyanate-based polyurethane coatings. Asymmetric hydrogenation finds widespread application in academia and industry. And indeed, a number of processes have been implemented for the production of pharma and agro intermediates as well as flavors & fragrances. Although these processes are all based on the use of late transition metals as catalysts, there is an increasing interest in the use of base metal catalysis in view of their lower cost and the expected different substrate scope. Catalysts based on cobalt have already shown their potential in enantioselective hydrogenation chemistry. This review outlines the impressive progress made in recent years on cobalt-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of different unsaturated substrates. We also illustrate the ligand dependent substrate specificity as well as the mechanistic variability in detail. Oxidation of an iridium(III) oxo precursor enabled the structural, spectroscopic, and quantum-chemical characterization of the first well-defined iridium(IV) oxo complex. Side-by-side examination of the proton-coupled electron transfer thermochemistry revealed similar driving forces for the isostructural oxo complexes in two redox states due to compensating contributions from H + and e - transfer. However, C-H activation of dihydroanthracene revealed significant hydrogen tunneling for the distinctly more basic iridium(III) oxo complex. Here, we present the development and characterization of the novel PhenTAA macrocycle as well as a series of [Ni(R 2 PhenTAA)] n complexes featuring two sites for ligand-centered redox-activity. These differ in the substituent R (R = H, Me, or Ph) and overall charge of the complex n (n = -2, -1, 0, +1, or +2). Electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques (CV, UV/vis-SEC, X-band EPR) reveal that all redox events of the [Ni(R 2 PhenTAA)] complexes are ligand-based, with accessible ligand charges of -2, -1, 0, +1, and +2. The o -phenylenediamide (OPD) group functions as the electron donor, while the imine moieties act as electron acceptors. The flanking o -aminobenzaldimine groups delocalize spin density in both the oxidized and reduced ligand states. The reduced complexes have different stabilities depending on the substituent R. For R = H, dimerization occurs upon reduction, whereas for R = Me/Ph, the reduced imine groups are stabilized. This also gives electrochemical access to a [Ni(R 2 PhenTAA)] 2- species. DFT and TD-DFT calculations corroborate these findings and further illustrate the unique donor-acceptor properties of the respective OPD and imine moieties. The novel [Ni(R 2 PhenTAA)] complexes exhibit up to five different ligand-based oxidation states and are electrochemically stable in a range from -2.4 to +1.8 V for the Me/Ph complexes (vs Fc/Fc + ).

Aromatic amines are ubiquitous moieties in organic molecules and their direct functionalization is of great interest in many research areas due to their prevalence in pharmaceuticals and organic electronics. While several synthetic tools exist for the ortho- and para-functionalization of anilines, the functionalization of the less reactive meta-position is not easy to achieve with current methods. To date, the meta-C-H arylation of aniline derivatives has been restricted to either the use of directing groups & templates, or their transformation into anilides & quaternary anilinium salts. Herein, we report the first general and efficient meta-C-H-arylation of non-directed aniline derivatives via cooperative catalysis with a palladium-S,O-ligand-norbornene system. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions with a wide range of aniline derivatives and aryl iodides, while being operationally simple and scalable. Our preliminary mechanistic investigation-including the isolation of several palladium complexes and deuterium experiments-reveal useful insights into the substituent-effects of both the aniline-substrate and the norbornene-mediator during the meta-C-H activation step., (© 2023 The Authors. The replacement of palladium catalysts for Wacker-type oxidation of olefins into ketones by first-row transition metals is a relevant approach for searching more sustainable protocols. Besides highly sophisticated iron catalysts, all the other first-row transition metal complexes have only led to poor activities and selectivities. Herein, we show that the cobalt-tetraphenylporphyrin complex is a competent catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of styrenes into ketones with silanes as the hydrogen sources. Remarkably, under room temperature and air atmosphere, the reactions were exceedingly fast (up to 10 minutes) with a low catalyst loading (1 mol %) while keeping an excellent chemo- and Markovnikov-selectivity (up to 99 % of ketone). Unprecedently high TOF (864 h -1 ) and TON (5,800) were reached for the oxidation of aromatic olefins under these benign conditions. Mechanistic studies suggest a reaction mechanism similar to the Mukaiyama-type hydration of olefins with a change in the last fundamental step, which controls the chemoselectivity, thanks to a unique hydrogen bonding network between the ethanol solvent and the cobalt peroxo intermediate., (© 2023 The Authors. We show that the incorporation of a biotinylated Co(TAML) cofactor within streptavidin enables asymmetric radical-type oxygen atom transfer catalysis with improved activity and enantioselectivity.

The thermal curing of industrial coatings (e.g., car painting and metal coil coatings) is accompanied by a substantial energy consumption due to the intrinsically high temperatures required during the curing process. Therefore, the development of new photochemical curing processes-preferably using visible light-is in high demand. This work describes new diazo-based cross-linkers that can be used to photocure acrylic coatings using blue light. This work demonstrates that the structure of the tethered diazo compounds influences the cross-linking efficiency, finding that side reactions are suppressed upon engineering greater molecular flexibility. Importantly, this work shows that these diazo compounds can be employed as either thermal or photochemical cross-linkers, exhibiting identical crosslinking performances. The performance of diazo-cross-linked coatings is evaluated to reveal excellent water resistance and demonstrably similar material properties to UV-cured acrylates. The importance of transition metal catalysis is exemplified by its wide range of applications, for example in the synthesis of chemicals, natural products, and pharmaceuticals. However, one relatively new application is for carrying out new-to-nature reactions inside living cells. The complex environment of a living cell is not welcoming to transition metal catalysts, as a diverse range of biological components have the potential to inhibit or deactivate the catalyst. Here we review the current progress in the field of transition metal catalysis, and evaluation of catalysis efficiency in living cells and under biological (relevant) conditions. Catalyst poisoning is a ubiquitous problem in this field, and we propose that future research into the development of physical and kinetic protection strategies may provide a route to improve the reactivity of catalysts in cells., (© 2023 The Authors. In this contribution, we describe a post-assembly modification approach to selectively coordinate transition metals in Pd 12 L 24 cuboctahedra. The herein reported approach involves the preparation of Pd 12 L 24 nanospheres with protonated nitrogen donor ligands that are covalently linked at the interior. The so obtained Pd 12 (LH + ) 24 nanospheres are shown to be suitable for coordinative post-modification after deprotection by deprotonation. Selective formation of tetra-coordinated M B in Pd 12 M B 6 L 24 , tri-coordinated M B in Pd 12 M B 8 L 24 nanospheres and two-coordinated M B in Pd 12 M B 12 L 24 nanospheres is achieved as a result of different nitrogen donor ligands. A combination of pulsed EPR spectroscopy (DEER) to measure Cu-Cu distances in the different spheres, NMR studies and computational investigations, support the presence of the complexes at precise locations of the Pd 12 M B 6 L 24 nanosphere. Immobilizing molecular catalysts on electrodes is vital for electrochemical applications. However, creating robust electrode-catalyst interactions while maintaining good catalytic performance and rapid electron transfer is challenging. Here, without introducing any foreign elements, we show a bottom-up synthetic approach of constructing the conjugated C-C bond between the commercial Vulcan carbon electrode and an organometallic catalyst. Characterization results from FTIR, XPS, aberration-corrected TEM and EPR confirmed the successful and uniform heterogenization of the complex. The synthesized Vulcan-LN 4 -Co catalyst is highly active and selective in the oxygen reduction reaction in neutral media, showing an 80 % hydrogen peroxide selectivity and a 0.72 V (vs. RHE) onset potential which significantly outperformed the homogenous counterpart. Based on single-crystal XRD and NMR data, we built a model for density functional theory calculations which showed a nearly optimal binding energy for the *OOH intermediate. Our results show that the direct conjugated C-C bonding is an effective approach for heterogenizing molecular catalysts on carbon, opening new opportunities for employing molecular catalysts in electrochemical applications., (© 2023 The Authors. An azobenzene-bearing N-heterocyclic carbene-based gold catalyst is reported of which the reactivity in a cyclization reaction depends on the isomeric state of the azobenzene. The configurations of the catalyst can be reversibly switched by light and are stable during the reaction, effectively leading to a switchable catalyst system.

A concept for intermolecular C-N cross-coupling amination has been discovered using tetrazoles and aromatic and aliphatic azides with boronic acids under iron-catalyzed conditions. The amination follows an unprecedented metalloradical activation mechanism that is different from traditional metal-catalyzed C-N cross-coupling reactions. The scope of the reaction has been demonstrated by the employment of a large number of tetrazoles, azides, and boronic acids. Moreover, several late-stage aminations and a short synthesis of a drug candidate have been showcased for further synthetic utility. Collectively, this iron-catalyzed C-N cross-coupling should have wide applications in the context of medicinal chemistry, drug discovery, and pharmaceutical industries.

The enantioselective hydrogenation of cyclic enamides has been achieved using an earth-abundant cobalt-bisphosphine catalyst. Using CoCl 2 /(S,S)-Ph-BPE, several trisubstituted carbocyclic enamides were reduced with high activity and excellent enantioselectivity (up to 99 %) to the corresponding saturated amides. The methodology can be extended to the synthesis of chiral amines by base hydrolysis of the hydrogenation products. Preliminary mechanistic investigations reveal the presence of a high spin cobalt (II) species in the catalytic cycle. The NiOOH electrode is commonly used in electrochemical alcohol oxidations. Yet understanding the reaction mechanism is far from trivial. In many cases, the difficulty lies in the decoupling of the overlapping influence of chemical and electrochemical factors that not only govern the reaction pathway but also the crystal structure of the in situ formed oxyhydroxide. Here, we use a different approach to understand this system: we start with synthesizing pure forms of the two oxyhydroxides, β-NiOOH and γ-NiOOH. Then, using the oxidative dehydrogenation of three typical alcohols as the model reactions, we examine the reactivity and selectivity of each oxyhydroxide. While solvent has a clear effect on the reaction rate of β-NiOOH, the observed selectivity was found to be unaffected and remained over 95% for the dehydrogenation of both primary and secondary alcohols to aldehydes and ketones, respectively. Yet, high concentration of OH - in aqueous solvent promoted the preferential conversion of benzyl alcohol to benzoic acid. Thus, the formation of carboxylic compounds in the electrochemical oxidation without alkaline electrolyte is more likely to follow the direct electrochemical oxidation pathway. Overoxidation of NiOOH from the β- to γ-phase will affect the selectivity but not the reactivity with a sustained >95% conversion. The mechanistic examinations comprising kinetic isotope effects, Hammett analysis, and spin trapping studies reveal that benzyl alcohol is oxidatively dehydrogenated to benzaldehyde via two consecutive hydrogen atom transfer steps. Transition metal radical-type carbene transfer catalysis is a sustainable and atom-efficient method to generate C-C bonds, especially to produce fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. A significant amount of research has therefore been devoted to applying this methodology, which resulted in innovative routes toward otherwise synthetically challenging products and a detailed mechanistic understanding of the catalytic systems. Furthermore, combined experimental and theoretical efforts elucidated the reactivity of carbene radical complexes and their off-cycle pathways. The latter can imply the formation of N-enolate and bridging carbenes, and undesired hydrogen atom transfer by the carbene radical species from the reaction medium which can lead to catalyst deactivation. In this concept paper, we demonstrate that understanding off-cycle and deactivation pathways not only affords solutions to circumvent them, but can also uncover novel reactivity for new applications. There is an increasing interest in the application of metal-organic cages (MOCs) in a biomedicinal context, as they can offer non-classical distribution in organisms compared to molecular substrates, while revealing novel cytotoxicity mechanisms. Unfortunately, many MOCs are not sufficiently stable under in vivo conditions, making it difficult to study their structure-activity relationships in living cells. As such, it is currently unclear whether MOC cytotoxicity stems from supramolecular features or their decomposition products. Herein, we describe the toxicity and photophysical properties of highly-stable rhodamine functionalized platinum-based Pt 2 L 4 nanospheres as well as their building blocks under in vitro and in vivo conditions. We show that in both zebrafish and human cancer cell lines, the Pt 2 L 4 nanospheres demonstrate reduced cytotoxicity and altered biodistribution within the body of zebrafish embryos compared to the building blocks. Metabolic pathways are highly regulated by effector molecules that influences the rate of enzymatic reactions. Inspired by the catalytic regulation found in living cells, we report a Pt 2 L 4 cage of which the activity can be controlled by effectors that bind inside the cage. The cage shows catalytic activity in the lactonization of alkynoic acids, with the reaction rates dependent on the effector guest bound in the cage. Some effector guests enhance the rate of the lactonization by up to 19-fold, whereas one decreases it by 5-fold. When mixtures of specific substrates are used, both starting materials and products act as guests for the Pt 2 L 4 cage, enhancing its catalytic activity for one substrate while reducing its activity for the other. Spherical three-dimensional (3D) cages composed of palladium(II) and pyridyl ligands are a mainstay of supramolecular chemistry with demonstrated catalytic and optoelectronic applications. The widely reported self-assembly of these palladium-based cages exhibits sensitivity to the solvents, reagents, and/or reactants employed. This sensitivity, and the resulting inconsistency between synthetic protocols, hinders the development of desirable palladium-based cages. We have found that pyridyl ligand substitution─the rate-limiting step of self-assembly─is facilitated by endogenous supporting ligands derived from the solvents, reagents, and reactants employed in synthetic protocols of palladium- and platinum-based assemblies. Here, we present a systematic investigation combining 1 H-NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI─MS), and absorption spectroscopy to characterize the intermediates to support the mechanism of pyridyl ligand substitution on a model complex, M ( py ) 2 ( M = ( N,N,N ', N '-tetramethylethylenediamine)palladium(II), py = pyridine), under simulated synthetic conditions for self-assembly. Our investigation exposes mechanisms for pyridyl ligand substitution, featuring intermediates stabilized by solvent, anion, or ( in situ formed) alkoxide moieties. Interrogation of destabilizing agents (2,2,2-trifluoroethanol and tetra( n -butyl)ammonium chloride) reveal similar mechanisms that ultimately facilitate the self-assembly of coordination cages. These findings rationalize widely reported solvent and anion effects in the self-assembly of coordination cages (and similar constructs) while highlighting methodologies to understand the role of supporting ligands in coordination chemistry.

Discovered as organometallic curiosities in the 1970s, carbene radicals have become a staple in modern-day homogeneous catalysis. Carbene radicals exhibit nucleophilic radical-type reactivity orthogonal to classical electrophilic diamagnetic Fischer carbenes. Their successful catalytic application has led to the synthesis of a myriad of carbo- and heterocycles, ranging from simple cyclopropanes to more challenging eight-membered rings. The field has matured to employ densely functionalized chiral porphyrin-based platforms that exhibit high enantio-, regio-, and stereoselectivity. Thus far the focus has largely been on cobalt-based systems, but interest has been growing for the past few years to expand the application of carbene radicals to other transition metals. Single-atom catalysts often show exceptionally high performance per metal loading. However, the isolated atom sites tend to agglomerate during preparation and/or high-temperature reaction. Here we show that in the case of Rh/Al 2 O 3 this deactivation can be prevented by dissolution/exsolution of metal atoms into/from the support. We design and synthesise a series of single-atom catalysts, characterise them and study the impact of exsolution in the dry reforming of methane at 700-900 °C. The catalysts' performance increases with increasing reaction time, as the rhodium atoms migrate from the subsurface to the surface. Although the oxidation state of rhodium changes from Rh(iii) to Rh(ii) or Rh(0) during catalysis, atom migration is the main factor affecting catalyst performance. Herein, we present a comprehensive study on the use of N -heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-ligated boryl radicals to enable C(sp 3 )-C(sp 3 ) bond formation under visible-light irradiation via Halogen-Atom Transfer (XAT). The methodology relies on the use of an acridinium dye to generate the boron-centered radicals from the corresponding NHC-ligated boranes via single-electron transfer (SET) and deprotonation. These boryl radicals subsequently engage with alkyl halides in an XAT step, delivering the desired nucleophilic alkyl radicals. The present XAT strategy is very mild and accommodates a broad scope of alkyl halides, including medicinally relevant compounds and biologically active molecules. The key role of NHC-ligated boryl radicals in the operative reaction mechanism has been elucidated through a combination of experimental, spectroscopic, and computational studies. This methodology stands as a significant advancement in the chemistry of NHC-ligated boryl radicals, which had long been restricted to radical reductions, enabling C-C bond formation under visible-light photoredox conditions.

A novel T-type molecular photoswitch based on the reversible cyclization of 1 H -2-benzo[ c ]oxocins to dihydro-4 H -cyclobuta[ c ]isochromenes has been developed. The switching mechanism involves a light-triggered ring-contraction of 8-membered 1 H -2-benzo[ c ]oxocins to 4,6-fused O -heterocyclic dihydro-4 H -cyclobuta[ c ]isochromene ring systems, with reversion back to the 1 H -2-benzo[ c ]oxocin state accessible through heating. Both processes are unidirectional and proceed with good efficiency, with switching properties─including reversibility and half-life time─easily adjusted via structural functionalization. Our new molecular-switching platform exhibits independence from solvent polarity, originating from its neutral-charge switching mechanism, a property highly sought-after for biological applications. The photoinduced ring-contraction involves a [2+2] conjugated-diene cyclization that obeys the Woodward-Hoffmann rules. In contrast, the reverse process initiates via a thermal ring-opening ( T > 60 °C) to produce the original 8-membered 1 H -2-benzo[ c ]oxocins, which is thermally forbidden according to the Woodward-Hoffmann rules. The thermal ring-opening is likely to proceed via an ortho -quinodimethane ( o -QDM) intermediate, and the corresponding switching mechanisms are supported by experimental observations and density functional theory calculations. Other transformations of 1 H -2-benzo[ c ]oxocins were found upon altering reaction conditions: prolonged heating of the 1 H -2-benzo[ c ]oxocins at a significantly elevated temperature (72 h at 120 °C), with the resulting dihydronaphthalenes formed via the o -QDM intermediate. These reactions also proceed with good chemoselectivities, providing new synthetic protocols for motifs found in several bioactive molecules, but are otherwise difficult to access.

Herein we report a ligand-centered redox-controlled strategy for the synthesis of an unusual binuclear diradical cobalt(III) complex, [Co 2 III (L •3- ) 2 ] ( 1 ), featuring two three-electron reduced trianionic monoradical 2,9-bis(phenyldiazo)-1,10-phenanthroline ligands ( L • 3- ) and two intermediate-spin cobalt(III) centers having a Co-Co bond. Controlled ligand-centered oxidation of 1 afforded two mononuclear complexes, [Co II (L • - )(L 0 )] + ([ 3 ]) + and [Co II (L 0 ) 2 ] 2+ ([ 2 ] 2+ ), which upon further ligand-centered reduction yielded a di-azo-anion diradical complex, [Co II (L • - ) 2 ] ( 4 ). In complex 1 , two three-electron reduced di-azo-anion monoradical ligands ( L • 3- ) bridge two intermediate Co(III) centers at a distance of 2.387(2) Å, while upon oxidation, one of the coordinating azo-arms of L becomes pendent, and in complexes [ 2 ] 2+ , [ 3 ] + , and 4 , two tetradentate ligands coordinate a single Co(II) center in a tridentate meridional fashion with one uncoordinated azo-arm from each of the ligands. In the presence of reducing agents, the monomers [ 2 ] 2+ , [ 3 ] + , and 4 undergo ligand-centered reduction to form azo-anion radicals, and the otherwise pendent azo-arms in the presence of cobalt(II)-salts like Co(ClO 4 ) 2 or CoCl 2 bind the second Co(II)-ion; further internal electron transfer from the cobalt center to the arylazo backbone produces the binuclear complex 1 . Spectroscopic analysis, DFT studies, and control experiments were performed to understand the electronic structures and the ligand-centered redox-controlled interconversion. The application of complex 1 as a molecular memory device (memristor) was also explored. Complex 1 showed encouraging results as a memristor with a current ON/OFF ratio > 10 4 and is highly promising for resistive RAM/ROM applications.

Polyureas have widespread applications due to their unique material properties. Because of the toxicity of isocyanates, sustainable isocyanate-free routes to prepare polyureas are a field of active research. Current routes to isocyanate-free polyureas focus on constructing the urea moiety in the final polymerizing step. In this study we present a new isocyanate-free method to produce polyureas by Ru-catalyzed carbene insertion into the N-H bonds of urea itself in combination with a series of bis-diazo compounds as carbene precursors. The mechanism was investigated by kinetics and DFT studies, revealing the rate-determining step to be nucleophilic attack on a Ru-carbene moiety by urea. Singlet oxygen is a potent oxidant with major applications in organic synthesis and medicinal treatment. An efficient way to produce singlet oxygen is the photochemical generation by fullerenes which exhibit ideal thermal and photochemical stability. In this contribution we describe readily accessible M 6 L 12 nanospheres with unique binding sites for fullerenes located at the windows of the nanospheres. Up to four C 70 can be associated with a single nanosphere, presenting an efficient method for fullerene extraction and application. Depending on the functionality located on the outside of the sphere, they act as vehicles for 1 O 2 generation in organic or in aqueous media using white LED light. Excellent productivity in 1 O 2 generation and consecutive oxidation of 1 O 2 acceptors using C 70 ⊂[Pd 6 L 12 ], C 60 ⊂[Pd 6 L 12 ] or fullerene soot extract was observed. The methodological design principles allow preparation and application of highly effective multifullerene binding spheres.

In this paper, we report the synthesis of a unique silicon(I)-based metalla-disilirane and report on its reactivity toward TMS-azide and benzophenone. Metal complexes containing disilylenes ((bis)silylenes with a Si-Si bond) are known, but direct ligation of the Si(I) centers to transition metals always generated dinuclear species. To overcome this problem, we targeted the formation of a mononuclear iron(0)-silicon(I)-based disilylene complex via templated synthesis, starting with ligation of two Si(II) centers to iron(II), followed by a two-step reduction. The DFT structure of the resulting η 2 -disilylene-iron complex reveals metal-to-silicon π-back donation and a delocalized three-center-two-electron (3c-2e) aromatic system. The Si(I)-Si(I) bond displays unusual but well-defined reactivity. With TMS-azide, both the initial azide adduct and the follow-up four-membered nitrene complex could be isolated. Reaction with benzophenone led to selective 1,4-addition into the Si-Si bond. This work reveals that selective reactions of Si(I)-Si(I) bonds are made possible by metal ligation.

Transition metal catalysis is of utmost importance for the development of sustainable processes in academia and industry. The activity and selectivity of metal complexes are typically the result of the interplay between ligand and metal properties. As the ligand can be chemically altered, a large research focus has been on ligand development. More recently, it has been recognized that further control over activity and selectivity can be achieved by using the "second coordination sphere", which can be seen as the region beyond the direct coordination sphere of the metal center. Hydrogen bonds appear to be very useful interactions in this context as they typically have sufficient strength and directionality to exert control of the second coordination sphere, yet hydrogen bonds are typically very dynamic, allowing fast turnover. In this review we have highlighted several key features of hydrogen bonding interactions and have summarized the use of hydrogen bonding to program the second coordination sphere. Such control can be achieved by bridging two ligands that are coordinated to a metal center to effectively lead to supramolecular bidentate ligands. In addition, hydrogen bonding can be used to preorganize a substrate that is coordinated to the metal center. Both strategies lead to catalysts with superior properties in a variety of metal catalyzed transformations, including (asymmetric) hydrogenation, hydroformylation, C-H activation, oxidation, radical-type transformations, and photochemical reactions.

Square-planar cobalt(II) systems have emerged as powerful carbene transfer catalysts for the synthesis of numerous (hetero)cyclic compounds via cobalt(III)-carbene radical intermediates. Spectroscopic detection and characterization of reactive carbene radical intermediates is limited to a few scattered experiments, centered around monosubstituted carbenes. Here, we reveal the formation of disubstituted cobalt(III)-carbene radicals derived from a cobalt(II)-tetraphenylporphyrin complex and acceptor-acceptor λ 3 -iodaneylidenes (iodonium ylides) as carbene precursors and their catalytic application. Iodonium ylides generate biscarbenoid species via reversible ligand modification of the paramagnetic cobalt(II)-tetraphenylporphyrin complex catalyst. Two interconnected catalytic cycles are involved in the overall mechanism, with a monocarbene radical and an N-enolate-carbene radical intermediate at the heart of each respective cycle. Notably, N-enolate formation is not a deactivation pathway but a reversible process, enabling transfer of two carbene moieties from a single N-enolate-carbene radical intermediate. Homogeneous ruthenium catalysed methanol dehydrogenation could become a key reaction for hydrogen production in liquid fuel cells. In order to improve existing catalytic systems, mechanistic insight is paramount in directing future studies. Herein, we describe what computational mechanistic research has taught us so far about ruthenium catalysed dehydrogenation reactions. In general, two mechanistic pathways can be operative in these reactions: a metal-centered or a metal-ligand cooperative (Noyori-Morris type) minimum energy reaction pathway (MERP). Discerning between these mechanisms on the basis of computational studies has proven to be highly input dependent, and to circumvent pitfalls it is important to consider several factors, such as solvent effects, metal-ligand cooperativity, alternative geometries, and complex electronic structures of metal centres. This Frontiers article summarizes the reported computational research performed on ruthenium catalyzed dehydrogenation reactions performed in the past decade, and serves as a guide for future research.

Precise regulation of the electronic states of catalytic sites through molecular engineering is highly desired to boost catalytic performance. Herein, a facile strategy was developed to synthesize efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, based on mononuclear iron phthalocyanine supported on commercially available multi-walled carbon nanotubes that contain electron-donating functional groups (FePc/CNT-R, with "R" being -NH 2 , -OH, or -COOH). These functional groups acted as axial ligands that coordinated to the Fe site, confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray absorption fine structure. Experimental results showed that FePc/CNT-NH 2 , with the most electron-donating -NH 2 axial ligand, exhibited the highest ORR activity with a positive onset potential (E onset =1.0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) and half-wave potential (E 1/2 =0.92 V). This was better than the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst (E onset =1.00 V and E 1/2 =0.85 V) under the same conditions. Overall, the functionalized FePc/CNT-R assemblies showed enhanced ORR performance in comparison to the non-functionalized FePc/CNT assembly. The origin of this behavior was investigated using density functional theory calculations, which demonstrated that the coordination of electron-donating groups to FePc facilitated the adsorption and activation of oxygen. Herein, we show that the photoactive complexes [(Cp)Fe(arene)] + (Cp = cyclopentadienyl; arene = C 6 H 6 , C 6 H 5 Me) act as latent catalysts that allow for photochemical control over the onset of alkyd paint curing, without the need for antiskinning agents such as the volatile 2-butanone oxime normally used to prevent curing during paint storage. The highly soluble neutral complexes [(Cp)Fe(Ch)] and [(Cp)Fe(Ch')] (Ch = cyclohexadienyl, Ch' = methylcyclohexadienyl) readily convert to the photoactive complexes [(Cp)Fe(arene)] + upon oxidation in alkyd, allowing the latter to be dosed in a wide range of concentrations. Infrared and Raman studies show similar spectral changes of the alkyd paint matrix as have been observed in alkyd curing mediated by well-known, industrially applied cobalt- and manganese-based catalyst Co(neodecanoate) 2 and [(Me 3 TACN) 2 Mn 2 (μ-OOCR) 3 ](OOCR). The [(Cp)Fe(Ch)]/[(Cp)Fe(arene)] + system performs equally well as these cobalt- and manganese-based catalysts in terms of drying time and outperform the manganese catalyst by showing a hardness development (increase) similar to that of the cobalt-based catalyst. Based on electron paramagnetic resonance and light-activity studies, we propose that photolysis of [(Cp)Fe(arene)] + generates short-lived active Fe II species, explaining the desired latency. Several metalloenzymes, including [FeFe]-hydrogenase, employ cofactors wherein multiple metal atoms work together with surrounding ligands that mediate heterolytic and concerted proton-electron transfer (CPET) bond activation steps. Herein, we report a new dinucleating PNNP expanded pincer ligand, which can bind two low-valent iron atoms in close proximity to enable metal-metal cooperativity (MMC). In addition, reversible partial dearomatization of the ligand's naphthyridine core enables both heterolytic metal-ligand cooperativity (MLC) and chemical non-innocence through CPET steps. Thermochemical and computational studies show how a change in ligand binding mode can lower the bond dissociation free energy of ligand C(sp 3 )-H bonds by ∼25 kcal mol -1 . H-atom abstraction enabled trapping of an unstable intermediate, which undergoes facile loss of two carbonyl ligands to form an unusual paramagnetic ( S = ) complex containing a mixed-valent iron(0)-iron(i) core bound within a partially dearomatized PNNP ligand. Finally, cyclic voltammetry experiments showed that these diiron complexes show catalytic activity for the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction. To commemorate 40 years since the founding of the Journal of Business Ethics, the editors in chief of the journal have invited the editors to provide commentaries on the future of business ethics. This essay comprises a selection of commentaries aimed at creating dialogue around the theme Ethics at the centre of global and local challenges . For much of the history of the Journal of Business Ethics, ethics was seen within the academy as a peripheral aspect of business. However, in recent years, the stakes have risen dramatically, with global and local worlds destabilized by financial crisis, climate change, internet technologies and artificial intelligence, and global health crises. The authors of these commentaries address these grand challenges by placing business ethics at their centre. What if all grand challenges were framed as grand ethical challenges? Tanusree Jain, Arno Kourula and Suhaib Riaz posit that an ethical lens allows for a humble response, in which those with greater capacity take greater responsibility but remain inclusive and cognizant of different voices and experiences. Focussing on business ethics in connection to the grand(est) challenge of environmental emergencies, Steffen Böhm introduces the deceptively simple yet radical position that business is nature, and nature is business. His quick but profound side-step from arguments against human-nature dualism to an ontological undoing of the business-nature dichotomy should have all business ethics scholars rethinking their "business and society" assumptions. Also, singularly concerned with the climate emergency, Boudewijn de Bruin posits a scenario where, 40 years from now, our field will be evaluated by its ability to have helped humanity emerge from this emergency. He contends that Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth) v. Royal Dutch Shell illustrates how human rights take centre stage in climate change litigation, and how business ethics enters the courtroom. From a consumer ethics perspective, Deirdre Shaw, Michal Carrington and Louise Hassan argue that ecologically sustainable and socially just marketplace systems demand cultural change, a reconsideration of future interpretations of "consumer society", a challenge to the dominant "growth logic" and stimulation of alternative ways to address our consumption needs. Still concerned with global issues, but turning attention to social inequalities, Nelarine Cornelius links the capability approach (CA) to global and corporate governance, arguing that CA will continue to lie at the foundation of human development policy, and, increasingly, CSR and corporate governance. Continuing debate on the grand challenges associated with justice and equality, Laurence Romani identifies a significant shift in the centrality of business ethics in debates on managing (cultural) differences, positing that dialogue between diversity management and international management can ground future debate in business ethics. Finally, the essay concludes with a commentary by Charlotte Karam and Michelle Greenwood on the possibilities of feminist-inspired theories, methods, and positionality for many spheres of business ethics, not least stakeholder theory, to broaden and deepen its capacity for nuance, responsiveness, and transformation. The metallo-radical activation of ortho -allylcarbonyl-aryl N -arylsulfonylhydrazones with the paramagnetic cobalt(II) porphyrin catalyst [Co II (TPP)] (TPP = tetraphenylporphyrin) provides an efficient and powerful method for the synthesis of novel 8-membered heterocyclic enol ethers. The synthetic protocol is versatile and practical and enables the synthesis of a wide range of unique 1 H -2-benzoxocins in high yields. The catalytic cyclization reactions proceed with excellent chemoselectivities, have a high functional group tolerance, and provide several opportunities for the synthesis of new bioactive compounds. The reactions are shown to proceed via cobalt(III)-carbene radical intermediates, which are involved in intramolecular hydrogen transfer (HAT) from the allylic position to the carbene radical, followed by a near-barrierless radical rebound step in the coordination sphere of cobalt. The proposed mechanism is supported by experimental observations, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and spin trapping experiments.

Outer-sphere radical hydrogenation of olefins proceeds via stepwise hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from transition metal hydride species to the substrate. Typical catalysts exhibit M-H bonds that are either too weak to efficiently activate H 2 or too strong to reduce unactivated olefins. This contribution evaluates an alternative approach, that starts from a square-planar cobalt(II) hydride complex. Photoactivation results in Co-H bond homolysis. The three-coordinate cobalt(I) photoproduct binds H 2 to give a dihydrogen complex, which is a strong hydrogen atom donor, enabling the stepwise hydrogenation of both styrenes and unactivated aliphatic olefins with H 2 via HAT., (© 2021 The Authors. A multistable molecular switching system based on an anthracene-extended bis-thiaxanthylidene with three individually addressable states that can be interconverted by electrochemical, thermal, and photochemical reactions is reported. Besides reversible switching between an open-shell diradical- and a closed-shell electronic configuration, our findings include a third dicationic state and control by multiple actuators. This dicationic state with an orthogonal conformation can be switched electrochemically with the neutral open-shell triplet state with orthogonal conformation, which was characterized by EPR. The remarkably stable diradical shows kinetic stability as a result of a significant activation barrier for isomerization to a more stable neutral closed-shell folded geometry. We ascribe this activation barrier of Δ G ⧧ (293 K) = 25.7 kcal mol -1 to steric hindrance in the fjord region of the overcrowded alkene structure. The folded closed-shell state can be converted back to the diradical state by irradiation with 385 nm. The folded state can also be oxidized to the dicationic state. These types of molecules with multiple switchable states and in particular stable diradicals show great potential in the design of new functional materials such as memory devices, logic gates, and OFETs.

Reactions of di-tert-butyldiphosphatetrahedrane (1) with cycloocta-1,5-diene- or anthracene-stabilised metalate anions of iron and cobalt consistently afford complexes of the rarely encountered 1,2-diphosphacyclobutadiene ligand, which have previously been very challenging synthetic targets. The subsequent reactivity of 1,2-diphosphacyclobutadiene cobaltates toward various electrophiles has also been investigated and is compared to reactions of related 1,3-diphosphacyclobutadiene complexes. The results highlight the distinct reactivity of such isomeric species, showing that the 1,2-isomers can act as precursors for previously unknown triphospholium ligands. We present a systematic evaluation and optimization of a complex bio-medical signal processing application on the BrainWave prototype system, targeted towards ambulatory EEG monitoring within a tiny power budget of 1 mW. The considered BrainWave processor is completely programmable, while maintaining energy-efficiency by means of a Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Array (CGRA). This is demonstrated through the mapping and evaluation of a state-of-the-art non-convulsive epileptic seizure detection algorithm, while ensuring real-time operation and seizure detection accuracy. Exploiting the CGRA leads to an energy reduction of 73.1%, compared to a highly tuned software implementation (SW-only). A total of 9 complex kernels were benchmarked on the CGRA, resulting in an average 4.7 × speedup and average 4.4 × energy savings over highly tuned SW-only implementations. The BrainWave processor is implemented in 28-nm FDSOI technology with 80 kB of Foundry-provided SRAM. By exploiting near-threshold computing for the logic and voltage-stacking to minimize on-chip voltage-conversion overhead, additional 15.2% and 19.5% energy savings are obtained, respectively. At the Minimum-Energy-Point (MEP) (223 μW, 8 MHz) we report a measured state-of-the-art 90.6% system conversion efficiency, while executing the epileptic seizure detection in real-time.

Supramolecular coordination-based self-assembled nanostructures have been widely studied, and currently various applications are being explored. For several applications, the stability of the nanostructure is of key importance, and this strongly depends on the metal used in the self-assembly process. Herein, design strategies and synthetic protocols to access desirable kinetically stable Pt 12 L 24 nanospheres are reported, and it is demonstrated that these are stable under conditions under which the palladium counterparts decompose. Descriptors previously used for palladium nanospheres are insufficient for platinum analogues, as the stronger metal-ligand bond results in a mixture of kinetically trapped structures. We report that next to the dihedral angle, the rigidity of the ditopic ligand is also a key parameter for the controlled formation of Pt 12 L 24 nanospheres. Catalytic amounts of coordinating additives to labilise the platinum-pyridyl bond to some extent are needed to selectively form Pt 12 L 24 assemblies. The formed Pt 12 L 24 nanospheres were demonstrated to be stable in the presence of chloride, amines and acids, unlike the palladium analogues., (© 2021 The Authors. The dynamics of metal organic polyhedra (MOP) play a crucial role for their application in catalysis and host-guest chemistry and as functional materials. In this contribution, we study the influence of possible contaminations of different metal precursors on the kinetic properties of MOP. Exemplary five different MOP are studied with metal precursors of varying quality. The metal precursors are either obtained from commercial sources or prepared by various literature procedures. Studies into the self-assembly process using 1 H NMR and MS analyses were performed on Pt 2 L 4 , Pd 2 L 4 , Pd 6 L 12 , Pd 12 L 24 , and Ni 4 L 6 assemblies. Commonly found impurities are shown to play a prominent role guiding selective formation of MOP, as they allow for an escape from otherwise kinetically trapped intermediates. The energy requirement for selective sphere formation is significantly lowered in many examples providing evidence for a catalytic role of halide impurities/additives in the self-assembly process. Furthermore, even though most analytical features such as 1 H NMR and MS analyses show identical results for assemblies with different types of metal precursors, the dynamics of formed assemblies differs significantly if slightly less pure starting materials are used. Tiny amounts of halide contaminations make the MOP more dynamic, which can play an important role for substrate diffusion especially if bulky substrates are used. We believe that this study on the influence of impurities (which were shown to be present in some commercial sources) on the kinetic properties of MOP together with procedures of obtaining high purity metal precursors provides important information for future material preparation and provides a better understanding of already known examples.
