Context: Airborne pathogens, defined as microscopic organisms, pose significant health risks and can potentially cause a variety of diseases. Given their ability to spread through diverse transmission routes from infected hosts, there is a critical need for accurate monitoring of these pathogens. This study aims to develop a sensor by investigating the vibrational responses of cantilever and bridged boundary-conditioned single-layer graphene (SLG) sheets with microorganisms, specifically SARS-CoV-2, attached at various positions on the sheet. The dynamic analysis of SLG with different boundary conditions and lengths was conducted using the atomistic finite element method (AFEM). Simulations were performed to evaluate SLG's performance as a sensor for biological entities. Altering the sheet's length and the mass of the attached biological object revealed observable frequency differences. This sensor design shows promise for enhancing the detection capabilities of graphene-based technologies for viruses., Methods: Finite element method (FEM) analysis is employed to model the sensor's performance and optimize its design parameters. The simulation results highlight the sensor's potential for achieving high sensitivity and rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2. Bridged and cantilever boundary conditions are applied at the ends of the SLG structure by using ANSYS software. Simulations have been conducted to observe how SLG behaves when used as sensors. In armchair graphene, under both boundary conditions, an SLG (5, 5) structure with a length of 50 nm displayed the highest frequency when a SARS-CoV-2 molecule with a mass of 2.6594 × 10 -18  g was attached. Conversely, the chiral SLG (17, 1) structure exhibited its lowest frequency at a length of 10 nm. This insight is crucial for grasping detection limits and how factors such as size and boundary conditions influence sensor efficacy. Context: Iridoviruses, a group of double-stranded DNA viruses, pose a significant threat to various aquatic animals, causing substantial economic losses in aquaculture and impacting ecosystem health. Early and accurate detection of these viruses is crucial for effective disease management and control. Conventional diagnostic methods, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and virus isolation, often require specialized laboratories, skilled personnel, and considerable time. This highlights the need for rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective diagnostic tools for iridovirus detection. Single-layer graphene, a two-dimensional material with unique properties like high surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, and chemical stability, has emerged as a versatile platform for biosensing applications. This paper explores the potential of employing single-layer graphene in the development of a bionanosensor for the sensitive and rapid detection of iridoviruses. This aids in comprehending the thresholds of detection and the influence of factors such as size, and boundary conditions on sensor effectiveness. Objective: Wound healing problems after neurosurgical procedures can lead to serious complications and may require complex revision or even reconstructive surgery. Therefore, optimal surgical management is critical to prevent complications. In a recent experimental study in animals, the authors demonstrated the superiority of a zigzag skin incision over a straight incision pattern. In this study, the authors applied these findings to clinical situations of neurosurgical patients with an indication for a coronal skin incision. The aim of this study was to objectively assess the functional and cosmetic outcomes between straight coronal and zigzag incisions in neurosurgical procedures., Methods: This prospective, randomized, controlled, single-center trial included adult patients undergoing frontal craniotomy for cerebrovascular or tumor pathologies. The study primarily included patients who were not expected to receive adjuvant radiation or chemotherapy. The zigzag incision was standardized using a template. A common straight skin incision behind the hairline served as a control. Complication rates, functional (2-point discrimination, width of the wound, Vancouver Scar Scale [VSS], and Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale [POSAS]), and cosmetic outcomes were assessed postoperatively and at 3-month follow-up evaluations. Additionally, all patients answered a wound-specific questionnaire and the SF-36 questionnaire., Results: Twenty-eight patients were randomized to the zigzag and 29 to the straight incision groups. Indications for surgery were cerebrovascular in 16 cases and tumors in 41 cases. Risk factors for wound healing were equally distributed in both groups. One patient in the zigzag group with poor postoperative compliance required surgery for secondary wound healing problems. Overall, the width of the scar was significantly smaller (p = 0.001) and local 2-point discrimination better (p = 0.005) in the zigzag group. Scores on the VSS (p = 0.003) and POSAS (p = 0.005) proved to be significantly superior in the zigzag group as well., Conclusions: A zigzag coronal skin incision pattern leads to significantly superior functional and cosmetic outcome scores. For certain patient groups, these findings may prove to be practice-changing.

Context: Graphene based nano sensors have huge potential in an era of sensor technology. The objective of this study is to create a sensor by investigating the vibration responses of cantilever and bridged boundary conditioned single layer graphene sheets (SLGS) with various attached microorganisms on the tip and at the centre of the sheet. The Parvoviridae, Flaviviridae, and Polyomaviridae biological substances have been comprehensively investigated here. For the Parvoviridae, Polyomaviridae, and Flaviviridae categories of targeted microbes, the sizes are 21nm, 40nm, and 45nm, respectively. The Parvoviridae family has a maximum frequency of 1.87x10 7 Hz with a cantilever condition and a mass of 4.2441 Zg, and for a bridged condition, it demonstrates a maximum frequency of 1.23x10 8 Hz with the same mass on armchair SLG (5 5). The data analysis shows that 3.0041 Zg mass of the Mimivirus has the lowest frequency. It demonstrates explicitly that the rate of frequency decreases as the value of mass increases. When compared to chiral SLG, the armchair single layer graphene sheet performs better. The research indicates that the dynamic properties are significantly influenced by the mass of various biological organisms. The application of this sensor will enable the detection of microorganisms or viruses that can be connected to SLG., Methods: In this research, the application of Single Layer Graphene (SLG) as a virus sensing device is explored. Atomistic finite element method (AFEM) has been used to carry out the dynamic analysis of SLG. Molecular dynamic analysis and simulations have been performed to see how SLG behaves when employed as sensors for biological entities and when they are exposed to bridged and cantilever boundary conditions. The frequency analysis was performed using ANSYS APDL software. SLG of various chirality has been utilised in the investigation. By altering the applied mass of a biological object, the difference in frequency observed. The idea behind mass detection employing nano biosensors is built on the concept that the stiffness of a biomolecule changes as its mass changes, making the resonant frequency extremely sensitive to that change. A shift in the resonance frequency results from a change in the associated mass on the graphene sheet. The main challenge in mass detection is estimating the variation in resonant frequency driven by the mass of the connected molecule. The SLG-based biosensor has a specific application in the early identification of diseases. The biosensor investigated in this article is novel, whereas the biosensors that are presently on the market operate using the ionization method. The organization and dynamics of chromatin fiber play crucial roles in regulating DNA accessibility for gene expression. Here we combine cryoelectron tomography (cryo-ET), sub-volume averaging, and 3D segmentation to visualize the in vitro and in vivo chromatin fibers folding by linker histone. We discover that an increased nucleosome repeat length and prolonged fiber length do not change the two-start helical architecture in reconstituted chromatin of homogeneous composition. Additionally, an isolated chromatin fiber with heterogeneous composition was observed, which includes short-range regions compatible with two-start helix. In vivo, sub-volume averaging reveals similar subunits of two-start helical architecture in transcriptionally inactive chromatin in frog erythrocyte nuclei. Strikingly, unambiguous DNA trajectories that displayed a zigzag pattern universally between alternate N/N+2 nucleosomes were further determined by cryo-ET with voltage phase plate. The manipulation of edge configurations and structures in atomically-thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for versatile functionalization has attracted intensive interest in recent years. The chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach has shown promise for TMD edge engineering of atomic edge configurations (1H, 1T or 1T'-zigzag or armchair edges) as well as diverse edge morphologies (1D nanoribbons, 2D dendrites, 3D spirals, etc.). These edge-rich TMD layers offer versatile candidates for probing the physical and chemical properties and exploring potential applications in electronics, optoelectronics, catalysis, sensing, and quantum technologies. In this Review, we present an overview of the current state-of-the-art in the manipulation of TMD atomic edges and edge-rich structures using CVD. We highlight the vast range of distinct properties associated with these edge configurations and structures and provide insights into the opportunities afforded by such edge-functionalized crystals. The objective of this Review is to motivate further research and development efforts to use CVD as a scalable approach to harness the benefits of such crystal-edge engineering.

Hydrocarbon belts have drawn great attention because of their unique structures and tantalizing properties. Although a few belts and heteroatom-doped analogs have been synthesized, belt molecules containing non-hexagonal rings remain rare. Herein we report the construction and application of unprecedented zigzag-type hydrocarbon belts which contain functionalized eight-membered rings. The synthesis features fourfold intramolecular acylation reactions of resorcin[4]arene-derived intermediates, which affords C 4 -symmetric tetrabenzobelt[4]arene[4]cyclooctatrienones. Stereoselective ketone reduction with LiAlH 4 and nucleophilic addition with alkynyllithiums provide the corresponding tetrahydroxylated belts. The tetraol and its methyl ether are powerful and selective hosts to form 2 : 1 and 1 : 1 complexes with cesium ion, respectively, with binding constants up to (1.71±0.33)×10 11  M -2 and (1.50±0.16)×10 6  M -1 . Context: Nanosensors and actuators are frequently made of graphene. Any defect in the graphene's manufacturing has an impact on its sensing performance and on its dynamic behaviour. Using a molecular dynamics technique, the influence of pinhole defects and atomic defects on the performance parameters of single-layer graphene sheets (SLGSs) and double-layer graphene sheets (DLGSs) with various boundary conditions and lengths is explored. In contrast to the perfect nanostructure of a graphene sheet, defects are described as holes formed by atomic vacancies. As the number of defects increases, the simulation results show that the presence of defects has the greatest impact on the resonance frequency of SLGSs and DLGSs. The influence of pinhole defect (PD) and atomic vacancy defect (AVD) on armchair, zigzag, and chiral SLGSs and DLGSs was investigated in this article using molecular dynamics simulation. The influence of both types of defects is largest when it is adjacent to the fixed support for all three different types of graphene sheets, i.e. armchair, zigzag, and chiral., Methods: The structure of the graphene sheet has been created using ANSYS APDL software. In the structure of the graphene sheet, atomic and pinhole defects have been generated. SLG and DLG sheets are modelled using a space frame structure that is identical to a three-dimensional beam. Dynamic analysis of single-layer and double-layer graphene sheets performed with different lengths using the atomistic finite element method. The interlayer separation in the form of Van der Waals interaction is modelled using characteristic spring element (Combin14). The upper and lower sheets of DLGSs are described as elastic beams connected by a spring element. With atomic vacancy defect for the bridged boundary condition, the highest frequency of 2.86 × 10 8 Hz was found for zigzag DLG (20 0) and with same boundary condition for pinhole defect 2.79 × 10 8 Hz frequency achieved. In a single-layer graphene sheet with an atomic vacancy and cantilever boundary condition, the maximum efficiency was 4.13 × 10 3 Hz for SLG (20 0), while in a pinhole defect, it produced 2.73 × 10 7 Hz. Moreover, the elastic parameters of beam components are calculated using the mechanical properties of covalent bonds between carbon atoms in the hexagonal lattice. Graphene has been widely and extensively used in mass sensing applications. The present study focused on exploring the use of single-layer graphene (SLG) and double-layer graphene (DLG) as sensing devices. The dynamic analysis of SLG and DLG with different boundary conditions (BDs) and length was executed using the atomistic finite element method (AFEM). SLG and DLG sheets were modelled and considered as a space-frame structure similar to a 3D beam. Spring elements (Combin14) were used to identify the interlayer interactions between two graphene layers in the DLG sheet due to the van der Waals forces. Simulations were carried out to visualize the behavior of the SLG and DLG subjected to different BDs and when used as mass sensing devices. The variation in frequency was noted by changing the length and applied mass of the SLGs and DLGs. The quantity of the frequency was found to be highest in the armchair SLG (6, 6) for a 50 nm sheet length and lowest in the chiral SLG (16, 4) for a 20 nm sheet length in the bridged condition. When the mass was 0.1 Zg, the frequency for the zigzag SLG (20, 0) was higher in both cases. The results show that the length of the sheet and the various mass values have a significant impact on the dynamic properties. The present research will contribute to the ultra-high frequency nano-resonance applications.

Color pattern polymorphism occurs when more than one form is found within the same population. It is widespread in a variety of taxa, leading us to ask what maintains this variation. One stabilizing mechanism is negative frequency-dependent selection, also known as apostatic selection, in which the fitness of a phenotype decreases with its frequency. 1-6 Negative frequency-dependent selection has been proposed as one of the most powerful selective forces in maintaining phenotypic and genetic diversity in both plant and animal populations. 1 , no study has documented that natural selection due to predation may result in negative frequency-dependent selection in a wild undisturbed vertebrate population. Here, we report the results of a long-term study, spanning 37 years from 1984 to 2020, of two distinct color morphs, zigzag and melanistic, within a population of adult adders (Vipera berus) on the island of Hallands Väderö in southern Sweden (Figure 1). Our results strongly suggest that the color pattern polymorphism is maintained by negative frequency-dependent natural selection in both males and females.5 Despite its importance and experimental evidence, 1 , 2 , 6 no study has documented that natural selection due to predation may result in negative frequency-dependent selection in a wild undisturbed vertebrate population. Understanding the long-term stability of MoS 2 is important for various optoelectronic applications. Herein, we show that the long-term exposure to an oxygen atmosphere for up to a few months results in zigzag (zz)-directional line unzipping of the MoS 2 basal plane. In contrast to exposure to dry or humid N 2 atmospheres, dry O 2 treatment promotes the initial formation of line defects, mainly along the armchair (ac) direction, and humid O 2 treatment further promotes ac line unzipping near edges. Further incubation of MoS 2 for a few months in an O 2 atmosphere results in massive zz-directional line unzipping. The photoluminescence and the strain-doping plot based on two prominent bands in the Raman spectrum show that, in contrast to dry-N 2 -treated MoS 2 , the O 2 -treated MoS 2 primarily exhibits hole doping, whereas humid-O 2 -treated MoS 2 mainly exists in a neutral charge state with tension. This study provides a guideline for MoS 2 preservation and a further method for generating controlled defects.

A novel one-dimensional zigzag chain-like Co II coordination polymer constructed from 4,4'-bi-pyridine (4,4'-bpy) and 2-hy-droxy-benzoate (2-OHbenz) ligands, namely, catena -poly[[(4,4'-bi-pyridine-κ N )-(μ-2-hy-droxy-benzoato-κ 2 O : O ')(2-hy-droxy-benzoato-κ 2 O , O ')cobalt(II)]-μ-4,4'-bi-pyridine-κ 2 N : N '-[aquahemi(μ-4,4'-bi-pyridine-κ 2 N : N ')(2-hy-droxy-benzoato-κ O (2-hy-droxy-benzoato-κ 2 O : O ')cobalt(II)], [Co 2 (C 7 H 5 O 3 ) 4 (C 10 H 8 N 2 ) 2.5 (H 2 O)] n , has been synthesized by reacting cobalt(II) nitrate trihydrate, 4,4'-bpy and 2-hy-droxy-benzoic acid in a mixture of water and methanol at room temperature. There are two independent Co II centers, Co1 and Co2, in the asymmetric unit, revealing a distorted octa-hedral geometry with chromophore types of [CoN 2 coordination mode, generating a dinuclear unit. The bridging 4,4'-bpy ligands connect these dinuclear units and the mononuclear Co2 chromophores, providing a one-dimensional alternating zigzag chain-like structure. In the crystal, inter-molecular hydrogen bonds, C-H⋯π and π-π stacking inter-actions are observed and these help to consolidate the packing. In addition, the physical properties of the title compound are reported.4 ] and [CoN 2 O 3 O'], respectively. The Co1 ions are doubly bridged by 2-OHbenz ligands with syn - anti coordination mode, generating a dinuclear unit. The bridging 4,4'-bpy ligands connect these dinuclear units and the mononuclear Co2 chromophores, providing a one-dimensional alternating zigzag chain-like structure. Mouse dorsal coat hair types, guard, awl, auchene and zigzag, develop in three consecutive waves. To date, it is unclear if these hair types are determined genetically through expression of specific factors or can change based on their mesenchymal environment. We undertook a novel approach to this question by studying individual hair type in 67 Collaborative Cross (CC) mouse lines and found significant variation in the proportion of each type between strains. Variation in the proportion of zigzag, awl and auchene, but not guard hair, was largely due to germline genetic variation. We utilised this variation to map a quantitative trait locus (QTL) on chromosome 12 that appears to influence a decision point switch controlling the propensity for either second (awl and auchene) or third wave (zigzag) hairs to develop. This locus contains two strong candidates, Sostdc1 and Twist1, each of which carry several ENCODE regulatory variants, specific to the causal allele, that can influence gene expression, are expressed in the developing hair follicle, and have been previously reported to be involved in regulating human and murine hair behaviour, but not hair subtype determination. In graphite crystals, layers of graphene reside in three equivalent, but distinct, stacking positions typically referred to as A, B, and C projections. The order in which the layers are stacked defines the electronic structure of the crystal, providing an exciting degree of freedom which can be exploited for designing graphitic materials with unusual properties including predicted high-temperature superconductivity and ferromagnetism. However, the lack of control of the stacking sequence limits most research to the stable ABA form of graphite. Here, we demonstrate a strategy to control the stacking order using van der Waals technology. To this end, we first visualize the distribution of stacking domains in graphite films and then perform directional encapsulation of ABC-rich graphite crystallites with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We found that hBN encapsulation, which is introduced parallel to the graphite zigzag edges, preserves ABC stacking, while encapsulation along the armchair edges transforms the stacking to ABA. The technique presented here should facilitate new research on the important properties of ABC graphite.

A bottom up method for the synthesis of unique tetracene-based nanoribbons, which incorporate cyclobutadiene moieties as linkers between the acene segments, is reported. These structures were achieved through the formal [2+2] cycloaddition reaction of ortho-functionalized tetracene precursor monomers. The formation mechanism and the electronic and magnetic properties of these nanoribbons were comprehensively studied by means of a multitechnique approach. Ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy showed the occurrence of metal-coordinated nanostructures at room temperature and their evolution into nanoribbons through formal [2+2] cycloaddition at 475 K. Frequency-shift non-contact atomic force microscopy images clearly proved the presence of bridging cyclobutadiene moieties upon covalent coupling of activated tetracene molecules. Insight into the electronic and vibrational properties of the so-formed ribbons was obtained by scanning tunneling microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. Magnetic properties were addressed from a computational point of view, allowing us to propose promising candidates to magnetic acene-based ribbons incorporating four-membered rings. Tinea capitis is the most common pediatric superficial dermatophyte infection. The causative species vary, as for instance, Microsporum canis predominates in Europe, while Trichophyton tonsurans predominates in North America. Tinea capitis does not respond well to topical therapy alone, thus oral therapy is requisite. The drug of choice is griseofulvin; however in some countries, it is no longer available. Fungal culture should be requested in the persistent, scalp lesion and trichoscopy can put forward a speedy diagnosis by its characteristic findings. Scalp dermoscopy or "trichoscopy" represents a valuable, noninvasive technique for the evaluation of patients with hair loss due to tenia capitis. Black phosphorus (BP) is a highly anisotropic allotrope of phosphorus with great promise for fast functional electronics and optoelectronics. We demonstrate the controlled structural modification of few-layer BP along arbitrary crystal directions with sub-nanometer precision for the formation of few-nanometer-wide armchair and zigzag BP nanoribbons. Nanoribbons are fabricated, along with nanopores and nanogaps, using a combination of mechanical-liquid exfoliation and in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning TEM nanosculpting. We predict that the few-nanometer-wide BP nanoribbons realized experimentally possess clear one-dimensional quantum confinement, even when the systems are made up of a few layers. The demonstration of this procedure is key for the development of BP-based electronics, optoelectronics, thermoelectrics, and other applications in reduced dimensions.

The surface of a material that is in contact with cells is known to affect cell morphology and function. To develop an appropriate surface for tendon engineering, we used zigzag microgroove surfaces, which are similar to the tenocyte microenvironment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of microgroove surfaces with different ridge angles (RAs), ridge lengths (RLs), ridge widths (RWs), and groove widths (GWs) on human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) shape. Dishes with microgroove surfaces were fabricated using cyclic olefin polymer by injection-compression molding. The other parameters were fixed, and effects of different RAs (180 - 30 °), RLs (5 - 500 μm), RWs (5 - 500 μm), and GWs (5 - 500 μm) were examined. Changes in the zigzag shape of the cell due to different RAs, RLs, RWs, and GWs were observed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Cytoskeletal changes were investigated using Phalloidin immunofluorescence staining. As observed by optical microscopy, MSCs changed to a zigzag shape in response to microgroove surfaces with different ridge and groove properties. . As observed by scanning electron microscopy, the cell shape changed at turns in the microgroove surface. Phalloidin immunofluorescence staining indicated that F-actin, not only in cell filopodia but also inside the cell body, changed orientation to conform to the microgrooves. In conclusion, the use of zigzag microgroove surfaces microfabricated by injection-compression molding demonstrated the property of MSCs to alter their shapes to fit the surface.

Creating complex spatial objects from a flat sheet of material using origami folding techniques has attracted attention in science and engineering. In the present work, we use the geometric properties of partially folded zigzag strips to better describe the kinematics of known zigzag/herringbone-base folded sheet metamaterials such as Miura-ori. Inspired by the kinematics of a one-degree of freedom zigzag strip, we introduce a class of cellular folded mechanical metamaterials comprising different scales of zigzag strips. This class of patterns combines origami folding techniques with kirigami. Using analytical and numerical models, we study the key mechanical properties of the folded materials. We show that our class of patterns, by expanding on the design space of Miura-ori, is appropriate for a wide range of applications from mechanical metamaterials to deployable structures at small and large scales. We further show that, depending on the geometry, these materials exhibit either negative or positive in-plane Poisson's ratios. By introducing a class of zigzag-base materials in the current study, we unify the concept of in-plane Poisson's ratio for similar materials in the literature and extend it to the class of zigzag-base folded sheet materials.

The electronic properties of graphene edges have been predicted to depend on their crystallographic orientation. The so-called zigzag (ZZ) edges haven been extensively explored theoretically and proposed for various electronic applications. However, their experimental study remains challenging due to the difficulty in realizing clean ZZ edges without disorder, reconstructions, or the presence of chemical functional groups. Here, we propose the ZZ-terminated, atomically sharp interfaces between graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (BN) as experimentally realizable, chemically stable model systems for graphene ZZ edges. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy and numerical methods, we explore the structure of graphene-BN interfaces and show them to host localized electronic states similar to those on the pristine graphene ZZ edge.

Ascariasis of the gallbladder is a very rare presentation. We report a case of a 15-year-old boy who presented with complaints of pain in the abdomen, vomiting, pruritus, and fever on-and-off for 10 days. On radiological examination, an ultrasonography of the abdomen showed a dilated gallbladder with multiple linear echogenic, tubular, parallel lines inside the lumen of the gallbladder, common bile duct and intrahepatic biliary radicles. The zigzag and coiling movement of a worm was noted in the lumen of the gallbladder on real time B-mode ultrasonography. The patient was successfully treated with an anthelminthic drug. On follow up no evidence of the worm was noted in the gallbladder or common bile duct lumen.
