Objective: To analyze the epidemic characteristics of common respiratory tract infection pathogens in children with respiratory tract infection, and provide scientific basis for the prevention and control of respiratory tract infection., Methods: A retrospective collection of clinical data was conducted on 11,538 children with respiratory tract infections at Luoyang Maternal and Child Health Hospital from December 2022 to November 2023. The types of respiratory tract infections, including upper and lower respiratory tract infections, as well as five respiratory pathogens: influenza A virus (influenza A), influenza B virus (influenza B virus, adenovirus (ADV), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) infections, were analyzed and compared for different genders, ages, temperatures, and air quality in different months; And the changes of five pathogens in children with respiratory tract infections of different disease severity., Results: From December 2022 to November 2023, a total of 11,538 children with respiratory infections were included in the analysis, including 6436 males and 5102 females, with an age of 4.92 ± 2.03 years. The proportion of upper respiratory tract infections is as high as 72.17%, and lower respiratory tract infections account for 27.83%. Among them, 2387 were positive for Flu A antigen, with a positive rate of 20.69%, 51 cases were positive for Flu B antigen, and the positive rate was 0.4%, 1296 cases were positive for adv antigen, with a positive rate of 11.23%, 868 cases were positive for RSV antigen, with a positive rate of 7.52%, 2481 cases were positive for MP IgM antibody or MP antigen, and the positive rate was 21.50%. Flu B in male children The infection rate of ADV and MP was higher than that of female children (p < 0.05); Among children in different age groups, the older the age, the older the Flu A The higher the infection rate of MP (p < 0.05), the higher the positive rate of RSV in children with younger age (p < 0.05). The positive rate of ADV in children aged 3-6 years and > 6 years was higher than that in children aged 0-3 years (p < 0.05); Flu A and MP are popular throughout the year, and the positive rate peaks during the period of temperature rise and air quality decline from February to March, and during the period of temperature drop and air quality index rise from August to November, The positive rate of RSV peaked after the turning point of temperature rise from March to April. The infection rate was higher during the period of sharp decline in air quality from March to May and sharp decline in temperature in November, The positive rate of ADV was higher at the turning point of temperature rise from February to March, and then the infection rate decreased. During the period of sharp temperature drop from August to November, the positive rate increased sharply, and the peak of infection occurred; As the disease worsens, The positive rates of Flu A, Flu B, RSV, MP and combined infection with more than two pathogens were all increased (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: After the new coronavirus epidemic in 2022, Flu A and MP have the highest infection rate of respiratory pathogens in children, showing a peak growth in general, with epidemic characteristics changing with environmental temperature, air quality and seasons. To elucidate the brain-wide information interactions that vary and contribute to individual differences in schizophrenia (SCZ), an information-resolved method is employed to construct individual synergistic and redundant interaction matrices based on regional pairwise BOLD time-series from 538 SCZ and 540 normal controls (NC). This analysis reveals a stable pattern of regionally-specific synergy dysfunction in SCZ. Furthermore, a hierarchical Bayesian model is applied to deconstruct the patterns of whole-brain synergy dysfunction into three latent factors that explain symptom heterogeneity in SCZ. Factor 1 exhibits a significant positive correlation with Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) positive scores, while factor 3 demonstrates significant negative correlations with PANSS negative and general scores. By integrating the neuroimaging data with normative gene expression information, this study identifies that each of these three factors corresponded to a subset of the SCZ risk gene set. Finally, by combining data from NeuroSynth and open molecular imaging sources, along with a spatially heterogeneous mean-field model, this study delineates three SCZ synergy factors corresponding to distinct symptom profiles and implicating unique cognitive, neurodynamic, and neurobiological mechanisms., (© 2024 The Author(s). Background: Mental health in the elderly has multiple determinants, and studies indicate household and family composition, economic status, and family support are key factors. However, these are difficult to modify, and better lifestyle for the elderly can be a possible intervention. The current study examined the mediating role of lifestyle in the association between these three types of the household and family composition (living alone, living with a spouse, and living with children) and mental health in older adults., Methods: We studied 5,407 participants (58.7% female, age 45 + years) from the Beijing Aging Brain Rejuvenation Initiative Project. All participants underwent a battery of examinations to measure degree loneliness, depression, and global cognitive function. We also surveyed personal lifestyles. We used a mediation analysis to determine the relative contribution of each lifestyle factor on mental health outcomes., Results: Older adults living alone rarely participated in mental and social activities and often had irregular diets; those adults living with children spent most of their time caring for grandchildren and had irregular eating and sleeping schedules; those living with a spouse often engaged in a variety of leisure activities and had the best life habits. Mediation analyses showed that dietary and sleeping irregularity partially mediated the negative effects of living alone on mental health, and were moderated by age and gender., Conclusions: Living with a spouse was associated with benefits for the mental health of middle-aged and older adults (especially older and female individuals), through modifying better lifestyles than those of individuals with the other two types of the household and family composition., (© 2024. Aims: To investigate alterations in cerebrum and cerebellum in prediabetes. Cerebellar injury in diabetes is traceable, but it has not been systematically studied, and whether cerebellar injury occurs and the degree of damage in prediabetes are not known., Methods: The current study investigated cerebral and cerebellar gray matter volume, white matter volume, white matter microstructure and white matter hyperintensity on T1-weighted, T2-weighted fluid-attenuated inversion recovery and diffusion tensor imaging scans in 78 individuals with normal glucose metabolism, 92 with prediabetes, and 108 with type 2 diabetes., Results: Participants with prediabetes showed significant gray matter and white matter atrophy, microstructural damage in the cerebellar and cerebral regions. Additionally, widespread structural alterations were observed in the diabetic stage. Previous studies have found that loneliness affects cognitive functions in older persons. However, the influence of loneliness on different cognitive fields and the internal mechanism of the relationship are unclear. A total of 4772 older persons aged above 50 years (Mean = 65.31, SD = 6.96, 57.7% female) were included in this study. All the participants completed the characteristics scale, as well as the loneliness scale, leisure activity scale, and cognitive function tests in six domains. The results showed that 17.6% of participants had high loneliness, while 16.7% of participants had low loneliness. Associations were observed between higher levels of loneliness and lower scores in general cognitive ability, memory, and executive functions. Mediation analysis suggested that leisure activities, encompassing mental, physical, and social activities, were associated with cognitive functions in the context of loneliness. These results indicate that leisure activities may play a significant role in the relationship between loneliness and cognitive functions in older adults. Background: Episodic memory (EM) deteriorates as a result of normal aging as well as Alzheimer's disease. The neural underpinnings of such age-related memory impairments in older individuals are not well-understood. Although previous research has unveiled the association between gray matter volume (GMV) and EM in the elderly population, such findings exhibit variances across distinct age cohorts. Consequently, an investigation into the dynamic evolution of this relationship with advancing age is imperative., Result: The present study utilized a sliding window approach to examine how the correlation between EM and GMV varied with age in a cross-sectional sample of 926 Chinese older adults. We found that both verbal EM (VEM) and spatial EM (SEM) exhibited positive correlations with GMV in extensive areas primarily in the temporal and frontal lobes and that these correlations typically became stronger with older age. Moreover, there were variations in the strength of the correlation between EM and GMV with age, which differed based on sex and the specific type of EM. Specifically, the association between VEM and GMVs in the insula and parietal regions became stronger with age for females but not for males, whereas the association between SEM and GMVs in the parietal and occipital regions became stronger for males but not for females. At the brain system level, there is a significant age-related increase in the correlations between both types of EM and the GMV of both the anterior temporal (AT) system and the posterior medial (PM) system in male group. In females, both types of EM show stronger age-related correlations with the GMV of the AT system compared to males., Conclusions: Our study revealed a significant positive correlation between GMV in most regions associated with EM and age, particularly in the frontal and temporal lobes. Background: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of computerized cognitive training (CCT) on white matter (WM) neuroplasticity and neuropsychological performance., Methods: A total of 128 community older adults (64.36 ± 6.14 years) were recruited and randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. Participants in the intervention group received a home-based, multidomain, and adaptive CCT for 30 minutes, 2 days per week for 1 year. Neuropsychological assessments, diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and T1-weighted structural MRI were performed at the pre- and post-intervention visits., Results: Eighty-one of 128 participants (41 in the intervention group and 40 in the control group) completed the 1-year intervention, and 61 of them (27 in the intervention group and 34 in the control group) underwent MRI scans twice. After excluding attrition bias, a significant time-by-group interaction on the Stroop Color-Word Test (SCWT; F = 51.85, p < .001) was found, showing improvement in the intervention group and a decline in the control group. At the brain level, the intervention group exhibited increased axial diffusivity in the left posterior thalamic radiation, and this increase was significantly correlated with reduced SCWT reaction time (r = ‒0.42, p = .029). No significant time-by-group interactions were found for gray matter volume., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that conducting multidomain adaptive CCT is an effective and feasible method to counteract cognitive decline in older adults, with WM neuroplasticity underpinning cognitive improvements. The relation between hypertension (HTN) and cognition has been reported inclusive results, which may be affected by disease duration. Our study aimed to examine the influence of HTN duration on cognition and its underlying white matter (WM) changes including macrostructural WM hyperintensities (WMH) and microstructural WM integrity. A total of 1218 patients aged ≥55 years with neuropsychological assessment and a subgroup of 233 people with imaging data were recruited and divided into 3 groups (short duration: <5 years, medium duration: 5-20 years, long duration: >20 years). We found that greater HTN duration was preferentially related to worse executive function (EF), processing speed (PS), and more severe WMH, which became more significant during long duration stage. The reductions in WM integrity were evident at the early stage especially in long-range association fibers and then scattered through the whole brain. Increasing WMH and decreasing integrity of specific tracts consistently undermined EF. Furthermore, free water imaging method greatly enhanced the sensitivity in detecting HTN-related WM alterations. Background: Lipid metabolism changes occur in early Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Yet little is known about metabolic gene changes in early AD cortex., Methods: The lipid metabolic genes selected from two datasets (GSE39420 and GSE118553) were analyzed with enrichment analysis. Protein-protein interaction network construction and correlation analyses were used to screen core genes. Literature analysis and molecular docking were applied to explore potential therapeutic drugs., Results: 60 lipid metabolic genes differentially expressed in early AD patients' cortex were screened. Bioinformatics analyses revealed that up-regulated genes were mainly focused on mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation and mediating the activation of long-chain fatty acids, phosphoproteins, and cholesterol metabolism. Down-regulated genes were mainly focused on lipid transport, carboxylic acid metabolic process, and neuron apoptotic process. Literature reviews and molecular docking results indicated that ACSL1, ACSBG2, ACAA2, FABP3, ALDH5A1, and FFAR4 were core targets for lipid metabolism disorder and had a high binding affinity with compounds including adenosine phosphate, oxidized Photinus luciferin, BMS-488043, and candidate therapeutic drugs especially bisphenol A, benzo(a)pyrene, ethinyl estradiol., Conclusions: AD cortical lipid metabolism disorder was associated with the dysregulation of the PPAR signaling pathway, glycerophospholipid metabolism, adipocytokine signaling pathway, fatty acid biosynthesis, fatty acid degradation, ferroptosis, biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, and fatty acid elongation. Candidate drugs including bisphenol A, benzo(a)pyrene, ethinyl estradiol, and active compounds including adenosine phosphate, oxidized Photinus luciferin, and BMS-488043 have potential therapeutic effects on cortical lipid metabolism disorder of early AD., (© 2024. Although previous studies have reported the sex differences in behavior/cognition and the brain, the sex difference in the relationship between memory abilities and the underlying neural basis in the aging process remains unclear. In this study, we used a machine learning model to estimate the association between cortical thickness and verbal/visuospatial memory in females and males and then explored the sex difference of these associations based on a community-elderly cohort (n = 1153, age ranged from 50.42 to 86.67 years). We validated that females outperformed males in verbal memory, while males outperformed females in visuospatial memory. The key regions related to verbal memory in females include the medial temporal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, and some regions around the insula. Further, those regions are more located in limbic, dorsal attention, and default-model networks, and are associated with face recognition and perception. The key regions related to visuospatial memory include the lateral prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate gyrus, and some occipital regions. They overlapped more with dorsal attention, frontoparietal and visual networks, and were associated with object recognition. Emerging research suggests a potential association of progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) with alterations in synaptic currents and mitochondrial dynamics. However, the specific associations between these pathological changes remain unclear. In this study, we utilized Aβ 42 -induced AD rats and primary neural cells as in vivo and in vitro models. The investigations included behavioural tests, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) analysis, Nissl staining, thioflavin-S staining, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Golgi-Cox staining, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), immunofluorescence staining, proteomics, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) detection, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) assessment, mitochondrial morphology analysis, electrophysiological studies, Western blotting, and molecular docking. The results revealed changes in synaptic currents, mitophagy, and mitochondrial dynamics in the AD models. Remarkably, intervention with Dengzhan Shengmai (DZSM) capsules emerged as a pivotal element in this investigation. Aβ 42 -induced synaptic dysfunction was significantly mitigated by DZSM intervention, which notably amplified the frequency and amplitude of synaptic transmission. The cognitive impairment observed in AD rats was ameliorated and accompanied by robust protection against structural damage in key brain regions, including the hippocampal CA3, primary cingular cortex, prelimbic system, and dysgranular insular cortex. DZSM intervention led to increased IDE levels, augmented long-term potential (LTP) amplitude, and enhanced dendritic spine density and length. Moreover, DZSM intervention led to favourable changes in mitochondrial parameters, including ROS expression, MMP and ATP contents, and mitochondrial morphology. Working memory (WM) impairment has been well characterized in normal aging. Various studies have explored changes in either the regional activity or the interregional connectivity underlying the aging process of WM. We proposed that brain activity and connectivity would independently alter with aging and affect WM performance. WM was assessed with a classical N-back task during functional magnetic resonance imaging in a community-based sample comprising 168 elderly subjects (aged 55-86 years old). Following the rationale of background functional connectivity, we assessed age-related alterations in brain activity and seed-based interregional connectivity independently. Analyses revealed age-related decrease in positive activity of the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and an increase in the negative activity of the ventral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and the local functional dysfunctions were accompanied by alterations in their connectivity to other cortical regions. Importantly, regional activity impairments in the IPL and ACC could mediate age-related effects on accuracy rate and reaction time, respectively, and those effects were further counterbalanced by enhancement of their background functional connectivity. We thus claimed that age-induced alterations in regional activity and interregional connectivity occurred independently and contributed to WM changes in aging. Background: The aging population and high rates of Alzheimer's disease (AD) create significant medical burdens, prompting a need for early prevention. Targeting modifiable risk factors like vascular risk factors (VRFs), closely linked to AD, may provide a promising strategy for intervention., Objective: This study investigates how VRFs influence cognitive performance and brain structures in a community-based cohort., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 4,667 participants over 50 years old, drawn from the Beijing Ageing Brain Rejuvenation Initiative project, were meticulously examined. Cognitive function and VRFs (diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity, and smoking), were comprehensively assessed through one-to-one interviews. Additionally, a subset of participants (n = 719) underwent MRI, encompassing T1-weighted and diffusion-weighted scans, to elucidate gray matter volume and white matter structural network organization., Results: The findings unveil diabetes as a potent detriment to memory, manifesting in atrophy within the right supramarginal gyrus and diminished nodal efficiency and degree centrality in the right inferior parietal lobe. Hypertension solely impaired memory without significant structural changes. Intriguingly, individuals with comorbid diabetes and hypertension exhibited the most pronounced deficits in both brain structure and cognitive performance. Remarkably, hyperlipidemia emerged as a factor associated with enhanced cognition, and preservation of brain structure., Conclusions: This study illuminates the intricate associations between VRFs and the varied patterns of cognitive and brain structural damage. Notably, the synergistic effect of diabetes and hypertension emerges as particularly deleterious. These findings underscore the imperative to tailor interventions for patients with distinct VRF comorbidities, especially when addressing cognitive decline and structural brain changes.

It is helpful to understand the pathology of Alzheimer's disease by exploring the relationship between amyloid-β accumulation and cognition. The study explored the relationship between regional amyloid-β accumulation and multiple cognitions and study their application value in the Alzheimer's disease diagnosis. 135 participants completed 18F-florbetapir Positron Emission Tomography (PET), structural MRI, and a cognitive battery. Partial correlation was used to examine the relationship between global and regional amyloid-β accumulation and cognitions. Then, a support vector machine was applied to determine whether cognition-related accumulation regions can adequately distinguish the cognitively normal controls (76 participants) and mild cognitive impairment (30 participants) groups or mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease (29 participants) groups. The result showed that amyloid-β accumulation regions were mainly located in the frontoparietal cortex, calcarine fissure, and surrounding cortex and temporal pole regions. Episodic memory-related regions included the frontoparietal cortices; executive function-related regions included the frontoparietal, temporal, and occipital cortices; and processing speed-related regions included the frontal and occipital cortices. Support vector machine analysis showed that only episodic memory-related amyloid-β accumulation regions had better classification performance during the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Background: Understanding the pathological characteristics of various mild cognitive impairment (MCI) subtypes is crucial for the differential diagnosis of dementia. The purpose of this study was to feature divergent symptom-deficit profiles in amnestic MCI (aMCI) and non-amnestic MCI (naMCI)., Methods: T1 and DTI MRI data from a total of 158 older adults with 50 normal controls, 56 aMCI, and 52 naMCI were included. The voxel-wise gray matter volumes and the number of seed-based white matter fiber bundles were compared among these three groups. Furthermore, correlation and mediation analyses between the neuroimaging indices and cognitive measures were performed., Results: The aMCI with specific memory abnormalities was characterized by volumetric atrophy of the left hippocampus but not by damage in the linked white matter fiber bundles. Conversely, naMCI was characterized by both the altered volume of the right inferior frontal gyrus and the significant damage to fiber bundles traversing the region in all three directions, not only affecting fibers around the atrophied area but also distant fibers. Mediation analyses of gray matter-white matter-cognition showed that gray matter atrophy affects the number of fiber bundles and further affects attention and executive function. Meanwhile, fiber bundle damage also affects gray matter volume, which further affects visual processing and language., Conclusions: The divergent structural damage patterns of the MCI subtypes and cognitive dysfunctions highlight the importance of detailed differential diagnoses in the early stages of pathological neurodegenerative diseases to deepen the understanding of dementia subtypes and inform targeted early clinical interventions., (© 2023. Purpose: Prebiotics, including fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), stimulate beneficial gut bacteria and may be helpful for patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aimed to compare the effects of FOS and GOS, alone or in combination, on AD mice and to identify their underlying mechanisms., Methods: Six-month-old APP/PS1 mice and wild-type mice were orally administered FOS, GOS, FOS + GOS or water by gavage for 6 weeks and then subjected to relative assays, including behavioral tests, biochemical assays and 16S rRNA sequencing., Results: Through behavioral tests, we found that GOS had the best effect on reversing cognitive impairment in APP/PS1 mice, followed by FOS + GOS, while FOS had no effect. Through biochemical techniques, we found that GOS and FOS + GOS had effects on multiple targets, including diminishing Aβ burden and proinflammatory IL-1β and IL-6 levels, and changing the concentrations of neurotransmitters GABA and 5-HT in the brain. In contrast, FOS had only a slight anti-inflammatory effect. Moreover, through 16S rRNA sequencing, we found that prebiotics changed composition of gut microbiota. Notably, GOS increased relative abundance of Lactobacillus, FOS increased that of Bifidobacterium, and FOS + GOS increased that of both. Furthermore, prebiotics downregulated the expression levels of proteins of the TLR4-Myd88-NF-κB pathway in the colons and cortexes, suggesting the involvement of gut-brain mechanism in alleviating neuroinflammation., Conclusion: Among the three prebiotics, GOS was the optimal one to alleviate cognitive impairment in APP/PS1 mice and the mechanism was attributed to its multi-target role in alleviating Aβ pathology and neuroinflammation, changing neurotransmitter concentrations, and modulating gut microbiota., (© 2023. Introduction: Colon cancer is a common malignancy, for which surgery is currently the preferred therapy., Aim: To assess the effect of transversus abdominis plane block (TAPB) combined with low-dose dexmedetomidine on elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic colectomy., Material and Methods: Sixty-two elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic colectomy between March 2021 and March 2022 were randomly selected and equally divided into Group A (low-dose dexmedetomidine) and Group B (TAPB + low-dose dexmedetomidine) by the randomized double-blind method. The treatment outcomes were compared., Results: The resting and active Visual Analogue Scale and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores were lower in Group B than those in Group A at 6 h, 1 day, 2 days and 3 days after operation (p < 0.05). The two groups had no significant differences in the levels of cluster of differentiation 4+ (CD4+), CD8+ and free Cor, CD4+/CD8+ ratio and NK cell level before anesthesia (p > 0.05). At 24 h after the operation, the level of CD4+, CD4+/CD8+ ratio and NK cell level were higher in Group B than those in Group A, and the levels of CD8+ and free Cor were lower in Group B (p < 0.05). Word-character lattice models have been proved to be effective for some Chinese natural language processing (NLP) tasks, in which word boundary information is fused into character sequences. However, due to the inherently unidirectional sequential nature, prior approaches have only learned sequential interactions of character-word instances but fail to capture fine-grained correlations in word-character spaces. In this article, we propose a lattice-aligned attention network (LAN) that aims to model dense interactions over word-character lattice structure for enhancing character representations. By carefully combining cross-lattice module, gated word-character semantic fusion unit, and self-lattice attention module, the network can explicitly capture fine-grained correlations across different spaces (e.g., word-to-character and character-to-character), thus significantly improving model performance. Experimental results on three Chinese NLP benchmark tasks demonstrate that LAN obtains state-of-the-art results compared to several competitive approaches.

Based on the fluctuations ensembled over neighbouring neurons, blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal is a mesoscale measurement of brain signals. Intraregional temporal features (IRTFs) of BOLD signal, extracted from regional neural activities, are utilized to investigate how the brain functions in local brain areas. This literature highlights four types of IRTFs and their representative calculations including variability in the temporal domain, variability in the frequency domain, entropy, and intrinsic neural timescales, which are tightly related to cognitions. In the brain-wide spatial organization, these brain features generally organized into two spatial hierarchies, reflecting structural constraints of regional dynamics and hierarchical functional processing workflow in brain. Meanwhile, the spatial organization gives rise to the link between neuronal properties and cognitive performance. Disrupted or unbalanced spatial conditions of IRTFs emerge with suboptimal cognitive states, which improved our understanding of the aging process and/or neuropathology of brain disease. In order to solve the problem that UO 2 in direct ethanol fuel cell anode catalysts is easily lost in acidic solution, resulting in the degradation of catalytic performance, this paper prepared a C/UO 2 /PVP/Pt catalyst in three steps by adding polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The test results by XRD, XPS, TEM and ICP-MS showed that PVP had a good encapsulation effect on UO 2 , and the actual loading rates of Pt and UO 2 were similar to the theoretical values. When 10% PVP was added, the dispersion of Pt nanoparticles was significantly improved, which reduced the particle size of Pt nanoparticles and provided more ethanol electrocatalytic oxidation reaction sites. Introduction: Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) is one of the most common types of dementia. Naoxin'an capsule (NXA), a traditional Chinese medicine compound, has been used to treat VCI for a long time in the clinic. Previous studies proved that the NXA capsules could ameliorate the cerebral mitochondrion deficits of VCI animals. This study aimed to investigate the protectiveness of NXA on human brain structure and function in patients with VCI. Methods: In total, 100 VCI patients were enrolled in this 24-week trial and randomly divided into the NXA capsules group ( n = 50) and the ginkgo biloba capsules control group ( n = 50). Before and after the treatment, cognitive behavior tests and multimodal brain magnetic resonance imaging were analyzed to comprehensively evaluate the effectiveness of NXA treatment on VCI patients after 24 weeks. Results: We found that the NXA group significantly improved overall cognitive ability (Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive section, p = 0.001; Mini-Mental Status Examination, p = 0.003), memory (Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure test, p < 0.001) and executive function (Trail Making Test-A, p = 0.024) performance after treatment compared with the control group. For brain function, the degree of centrality in the left middle frontal gyrus, right postcentral gyrus, and left supplementary motor area increased in the NXA group and decreased in the ginkgo biloba group after treatment. The fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) of the left precentral and right superior parietal gyrus increased, and the fALFF of the right parahippocampal and left inferior temporal gyrus decreased in the NXA group after treatment. For brain structure, the gray matter density of the left postcentral gyrus increased in the NXA group after treatment, and the total volume of white matter hyperintensity showed a decreasing trend but was not statistically significant. Furthermore, the improvement effect of NXA on executive function was associated with changes in brain function. High-performance all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) deeply rely on the joint contributions of desirable optical absorption, adaptive energy levels, and appropriate morphology. Herein, two structural analogous polymerized small-molecule acceptors (PSMAs), PYFCl-T and PYF&PYCl-T, are synthesized, and then incorporated into the PM6:PY-IT binary blends to construct ternary all-PSCs. Due to the superior compatibility of PY-IT and PYFCl-T, the ternary all-PSC based on PM6:PY-IT:PYFCl-T with 10 wt% PYFCl-T, presents higher and more balanced charge mobility, suppressed charge recombination, and faster charge-transfer kinetics, resulting in an outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.12% with enhanced J sc and FF, which is much higher than that (PCE of 16.09%) of the binary all-PSCs based on PM6:PY-IT. Besides, the ternary all-PSCs also exhibit improved photostability. The conspicuous performance enhancement principally should give the credit to the miscibility-driven phase optimization of the donor and acceptor. Background: Understanding the characteristics of intrinsic connectivity networks (ICNs) in terms of both glucose metabolism and functional connectivity (FC) is important for revealing cognitive aging and neurodegeneration, but the relationships between these two aspects during aging has not been well established in older adults., Objective: This study is to assess the relationship between age-related glucose metabolism and FC in key ICNs, and their direct or indirect effects on cognitive deficits in older adults., Methods: We estimated the individual-level standard uptake value ratio (SUVr) and FC of eleven ICNs in 59 cognitively unimpaired older adults, then analyzed the associations of SUVr and FC of each ICN and their relationships with cognitive performance., Results: The results showed both the SUVr and FC in the posterior default mode network (pDMN) had a significant decline with age, and the association between them was also significant. Moreover, both decline of metabolism and FC in the pDMN were significantly correlated with executive function decline. Cognitive processing relies on the functional coupling between the cerebrum and cerebellum. However, it remains unclear how the 2 collaborate in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) patients. With functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques, we compared cerebrocerebellar functional connectivity during the resting state (rsFC) between the aMCI and healthy control (HC) groups. Additionally, we distinguished coupling between functionally corresponding and noncorresponding areas across the cerebrum and cerebellum. The results demonstrated decreased rsFC between both functionally corresponding and noncorresponding areas, suggesting distributed deficits of cerebrocerebellar connections in aMCI patients. Increased rsFC was also observed, which were between functionally noncorresponding areas. Moreover, the increased rsFC was positively correlated with attentional scores in the aMCI group, and this effect was absent in the HC group, supporting that there exists a compensatory mechanism in patients. Background: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has been thought of as the transitional stage between normal ageing and Alzheimer's disease, involving substantial changes in brain grey matter structures. As most previous studies have focused on single regions (e.g. the hippocampus) and their changes during MCI development and reversion, the relationship between grey matter covariance among distributed brain regions and clinical development and reversion of MCI remains unclear., Methods: With samples from two independent studies (155 from the Beijing Aging Brain Rejuvenation Initiative and 286 from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative), grey matter covariance of default, frontoparietal, and hippocampal networks were identified by seed-based partial least square analyses, and random forest models were applied to predict the progression from normal cognition to MCI (N-t-M) and the reversion from MCI to normal cognition (M-t-N)., Results: With varying degrees, the grey matter covariance in the three networks could predict N-t-M progression (AUC = 0.692-0.792) and M-t-N reversion (AUC = 0.701-0.809). Further analyses indicated that the hippocampus has emerged as an important region in reversion prediction within all three brain networks, and even though the hippocampus itself could predict the clinical reversion of M-t-N, the grey matter covariance showed higher prediction accuracy for early progression of N-t-M., Conclusions: Our findings are the first to report grey matter covariance changes in MCI development and reversion and highlight the necessity of including grey matter covariance changes along with hippocampal degeneration in the early detection of MCI and Alzheimer's disease., (© 2023. The A/T/N research framework has been proposed for the diagnosis and prognosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the spatial distribution of ATN biomarkers and their relationship with cognitive impairment and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) need further clarification in patients with AD. We scanned 83 AD patients and 38 cognitively normal controls who independently completed the mini-mental state examination and Neuropsychiatric Inventory scales. Tau, Aβ, and hypometabolism spatial patterns were characterized using Statistical Parametric Mapping together with [18F]flortaucipir, [18F]florbetapir, and [18F]FDG positron emission tomography. Piecewise linear regression, two-sample t-tests, and support vector machine algorithms were used to explore the relationship between tau, Aβ, and hypometabolism and cognition, NPS, and AD diagnosis. The results showed that regions with tau deposition are region-specific and mainly occurred in inferior temporal lobes in AD, which extensively overlaps with the hypometabolic regions. While the deposition regions of Aβ were unique and the regions affected by hypometabolism were widely distributed. Unlike Aβ, tau and hypometabolism build up monotonically with increasing cognitive impairment in the late stages of AD. In addition, NPS in AD were associated with tau deposition closely, followed by hypometabolism, but not with Aβ. Finally, hypometabolism and tau had higher accuracy in differentiating the AD patients from controls (accuracy = 0.88, accuracy = 0.85) than Aβ (accuracy = 0.81), and the combined three were the highest (accuracy = 0.95). These findings suggest tau pathology is superior over Aβ and glucose metabolism to identify cognitive impairment and NPS. Background: Language ability differs between the sexes. However, it is unclear how this sex difference is moderated by genetic factors and how the brain interacts with genetics to support this specific language capacity. Previous studies have demonstrated that the sorting protein-related receptor (SORL1) polymorphism influences cognitive function and brain structure differently in males and females and is associated with Alzheimer's disease risk., Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sex and the SORL1 rs1699102 (CC versus T carriers) genotype on language., Methods: 103 non-demented Chinese older adults from Beijing Aging Brain Rejuvenation Initiative (BABRI) database were included in this study. Participants completed language tests, T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and resting-state functional MRI. Language test performance, gray matter volume, and network connections were compared between genotype and sex groups., Results: The rs1699102 polymorphism moderated the effects of sex on language performance, with the female having reversed language advantages in T carriers. The T allele carriers had lower gray matter volume in the left precentral gyrus. The effect of sex on language network connections was moderated by rs1699102; male CC homozygotes and female T carriers had higher internetwork connections, which were negatively correlated with language performance., Conclusion: These results suggest that SORL1 moderates the effects of sex on language, with T being a risk allele, especially in females. Our findings underscore the importance of considering the influence of genetic factors when examining sex effects.

Hypertension has been well recognized as a risk factor for cognitive impairment and dementia. Although the underlying mechanisms of hypertension-affected cognitive deterioration are not fully understood, white matter changes (WMCs) seem to play an important role. WMCs include low microstructural integrity and subsequent white matter macrostructural lesions, which are common on brain imaging in hypertensive patients and are critical for multiple cognitive domains. This article provides an overview of the impact of hypertension on white matter microstructural and macrostructural changes and its link to cognitive dysfunction. Hypertension may induce microstructural changes in white matter, especially for the long-range fibers such as anterior thalamic radiation (ATR) and inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF), and then macrostructural abnormalities affecting different lobes, especially the periventricular area. Different regions' WMCs would further exert different effects to specific cognitive domains and accelerate brain aging. Adolescence is the peak period for the onset of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Brain networks of cognitive and affective control in adolescents are not well developed when their exposure to external stimuli suddenly increases.Reasonable parental monitoring is especially important during this period.To examine the role of parental monitoring in the development of functional brain networks of GAD, we conducted a cross-validation-based predictive study based on the functional brain networks of 192 participants. We found that a set of functional brain networks, especially the default mode network and its connectivity with the frontoparietal network, could predict the ages of adolescents, which was replicated in three independent samples.Importantly, the difference between predicted age and chronological age significantly mediated the relationship between parental monitoring and anxiety levels. These findings suggest that inadequate parental monitoring plays a crucial role in the delayed development of specific brain networks associated with GAD in adolescents. Background: The identification of factors that specifically influence pathological and successful cognitive aging is a prerequisite for implementing disease prevention and promoting successful aging. However, multi-domain behavioral factors that characterize the difference between successful and pathological cognitive aging are not clear yet., Methods: A group of community-dwelling older adults (N = 1347, aged 70-88 years) in Beijing was recruited in this cross-sectional study, and a sub-cohort was further divided into successful cognitive aging (SCA, N = 154), mild cognitive impairment (MCI, N = 256), and cognitively normal control (CNC, N = 173) groups. Analyses of variance, regression models with the Shapley value algorithm, and structural equation model (SEM) analyses were conducted to determine specific influencing factors and to evaluate their relative importance and interacting relationships in altering cognitive performance., Results: We found that abundant early-life cognitive reserve (ECR, including the level of education and occupational attainment) and reduced late-life leisure activity (LLA, including mental, physical, and social activities) were distinct characteristics of SCA and MCI, respectively. The level of education, age, mental activity, and occupational attainment were the top four important factors that explained 31.6% of cognitive variability. By SEM analyses, we firstly found that LLA partially mediated the relationship between ECR and cognition; and further multi-group SEM analyses showed ECR played a more direct role in the SCA group than in the MCI group: in the SCA group, only the direct effect of ECR on cognition was significant, and in the MCI group, direct effects between ECR, LLA and cognition were all significant., Conclusions: Results of this large-sample community-based study suggest it is important for older adults to have an abundant ECR for SCA, and to keep a high level of LLA to prevent cognitive impairment. Recently, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) have increased rapidly. To further increase the PCE of all-PSCs, it is necessary to create new donor polymers matching the polymer acceptors. In this paper, we synthesize a new quinoxaline-based polymer donor PBQ8 with n-octyl side chain on the quinoxaline unit, which possesses the same skeleton structure to the previously reported PBQ5 (with isooctyl side chain). The effects of alkyl side chains on the physicochemical properties of the polymer donor were investigated. In comparison with PBQ5, PBQ8 exhibits stronger intermolecular interactions and better molecular packing. When blending with polymer acceptor PY-IT, the PBQ8:PY-IT based devices demonstrated a higher PCE value of 17.04%, which is one of the highest PCEs occurred in the all-PSCs. And the PBQ5:PY-IT (PCE 15.56%, V oc 0.907 V, FF 69.72%, and J sc 24.60 mA cm -2 ) is much lower. The PBQ8:PY-IT blend displayed more efficient exciton dissociation, better molecular stacking properties, preferable phase separation and higher mobility. Objective: It is very important to identify individuals who are at greatest risk for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to potentially mitigate or minimize risk factors early in its course. We created a practical MCI risk scoring system and provided individualized estimates of MCI risk. Methods: Using data from 9,000 older adults recruited for the Beijing Ageing Brain Rejuvenation Initiative, we investigated the association of the baseline demographic, medical history, lifestyle and cognitive data with MCI status based on logistic modeling and established risk score (RS) models 1 and 2 for MCI. We evaluated model performance by computing the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). Finally, RS model 3 was further confirmed and improved based on longitudinal outcome data from the progression of MCI in a sub-cohort who had an average 3-year follow-up. Results: A total of 1,174 subjects (19.8%) were diagnosed with MCI at baseline, and 72 (7.8%) of 849 developed MCI in the follow-up. The AUC values of RS models 1 and 2 were between 0.64 and 0.70 based on baseline age, education, cerebrovascular disease, intelligence and physical activities. Adding baseline memory and language performance, the AUC of RS model 3 more accurately predicted MCI conversion (AUC = 0.785). Conclusion: A combination of risk factors is predictive of the likelihood of MCI. In this paper, quantum correlation (QC) swapping between two Werner-like states, which are transformed from Werner states undergoing local and nonlocal unitary operations, are studied. Bell states measures are performed in the middle node to realize the QC swapping and correspondingly final correlated sates are obtained. Two different QC quantifiers, i.e., measurement-induced disturbance (MID) and ameliorated MID, are employed to characterize and quantify all the concerned QCs in the swapping process. All QCs in the concerned states are evaluated analytically and numerically. Correspondingly, their characteristics and properties are exposed in detail. It is exposed that, through the QC swapping process, one can obtain the long-distance QC indeed. Moreover, the similarities of monotony features of MID and AMID between the initial states and final states are exposed and analyzed.

An emerging trend is to use regression-based machine learning approaches to predict cognitive functions at the individual level from neuroimaging data. However, individual prediction models are inherently influenced by the vast options for network construction and model selection in machine learning pipelines. In particular, the brain white matter (WM) structural connectome lacks a systematic evaluation of the effects of different options in the pipeline on predictive performance. Here, we focused on the methodological evaluation of brain structural connectome-based predictions. For network construction, we considered two parcellation schemes for defining nodes and seven strategies for defining edges. For the regression algorithms, we used eight regression models. Four cognitive domains and brain age were targeted as predictive tasks based on two independent datasets (Beijing Aging Brain Rejuvenation Initiative [BABRI]: 633 healthy older adults; Human Connectome Projects in Aging [HCP-A]: 560 healthy older adults). Based on the results, the WM structural connectome provided a satisfying predictive ability for individual age and cognitive functions, especially for executive function and attention. Second, different parcellation schemes induce a significant difference in predictive performance. Third, prediction results from different data sets showed that dMRI with distinct acquisition parameters may plausibly result in a preference for proper fiber reconstruction algorithms and different weighting options. Finally, deep learning and Elastic-Net models are more accurate and robust in connectome-based predictions. Together, significant effects of different options in WM network construction and regression algorithms on the predictive performances are identified in this study, which may provide important references and guidelines to select suitable options for future studies in this field., (© 2022 The Authors. Increased amyloid burden and decreased glucose metabolism are important characteristics of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but their spatial distribution and hierarchical clustering organization are still poorly understood. In this study, we explored the distribution and clustering organization of amyloid and glucose metabolism based on 18 F-florbetapir and 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET data from 68 AD patients and 20 cognitively normal individuals. We found that: (i) cortical regions with highest florbetapir binding were the regions with high glucose metabolism; (ii) the percentage changes of amyloid deposition were greatest in the frontal and temporal areas, and the hypometabolism was greatest in the parietal and temporal areas; (iii) brain areas can be divided into three hierarchical clusters by amyloid and into five clusters by metabolism using a hierarchical clustering approach, indicating that adjacent regions are more likely to be grouped into one sub-network; and (iv) there was a significant positive correlation in any pair of amyloid-amyloid and metabolism-metabolism sub-networks, and a significant negative correlation in amyloid-metabolism sub-networks. Simultanagnosia is a common symptom of posterior cortical atrophy, and its association with brain structural and functional changes remains unclear. In our study, 18 posterior cortical atrophy patients with simultanagnosia, 29 patients with Alzheimer's disease and 20 cognitively normal controls were recruited and subjected to full neuropsychological evaluation, including simultanagnosia tests, and structural and resting-state functional MRI. The gray matter volume was assessed by voxel-based morphometry, while the intrinsic functional connectivity was evaluated using the reduced gray matter volume regions of interest as the seed. In contrast to the patients with Alzheimer's disease, those with posterior cortical atrophy showed the following: (1) markedly lower simultanagnosia test scores, (2) an altered regional gray matter volume of the left middle occipital gyrus and ventral occipital areas, and (3) lowered intrinsic functional connectivity with the left middle occipital gyrus, left lingual gyrus and right middle occipital gyrus separately. Additionally, the gray matter volume of the left middle occipital gyrus and left inferior occipital gyrus were each correlated with simultanagnosia in posterior cortical atrophy patients. The intrinsic functional connectivity of the left middle occipital gyrus with the right superior occipital gyrus and that of the right middle occipital gyrus with the left superior parietal gyrus were also correlated with simultanagnosia in posterior cortical atrophy patients. In summary, this study indicated that simultanagnosia is associated with gray matter reductions and decreased functional connectivity in the left middle occipital gyrus and the left inferior occipital gyrus in patients with posterior cortical atrophy., (© 2021. Background: Traditional Chinese herbal medicine draws more attention to explore an effective therapeutic strategy for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Shenqi Yizhi granule (SQYG), a Chinese herbal recipe, has been applied to ameliorate cognitive impairment in mild-to-moderate AD patients. However, the overall molecular mechanism of SQYG in treating AD has not been clarified., Objective: This study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanism of SQYG on AD using an integration strategy of network pharmacology and molecular docking., Methods: The active compounds of SQYG and common targets between SQYG and AD were screened from databases. The herb-compound network, compound-target network, and protein-protein interaction network were constructed. The enrichment analysis of common targets and molecular docking were performed., Results: 816 compounds and 307 common targets between SQYG and AD were screened. KEGG analysis revealed that common targets were mainly enriched in lipid metabolism, metal ion metabolism, IL-17 signaling pathway, GABA receptor signaling, and neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction. Molecular docking analysis showed high binding affinity between ginsenoside Rg1 and A β 1-42 , tanshinone IIA and BACE1, baicalin, and AchE., Conclusions: The therapeutic mechanisms of SQYG on AD were associated with regulating lipid metabolism, metal ion metabolism, IL-17 signaling pathway, and GABA receptor signaling. Background: Dysfunction of the thalamus has been proposed as a core mechanism of fatal familial insomnia. However, detailed metabolic and structural alterations in thalamic subnuclei are not well documented. We aimed to address the multimodal structuro-metabolic pattern at the level of the thalamic nuclei in fatal familial insomnia patients, and investigated the clinical presentation of primary thalamic alterations., Materials and Methods: Five fatal familial insomnia patients and 10 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. All participants underwent neuropsychological assessments, polysomnography, electroencephalogram, and cerebrospinal fluid tests. MRI and fluorodeoxyglucose PET were acquired on a hybrid PET/MRI system. Structural and metabolic changes were compared using voxel-based morphometry analyses and standardized uptake value ratio analyses, focusing on thalamic subnuclei region of interest analyses. Correlation analysis was conducted between gray matter volume and metabolic decrease ratios, and clinical features., Results: The whole-brain analysis showed that gray matter volume decline was confined to the bilateral thalamus and right middle temporal pole in fatal familial insomnia patients, whereas hypometabolism was observed in the bilateral thalamus, basal ganglia, and widespread cortices, mainly in the forebrain. In the regions of interest analysis, gray matter volume and metabolism decreases were prominent in bilateral medial dorsal nuclei, anterior nuclei, and the pulvinar, which is consistent with neuropathological and clinical findings. A positive correlation was found between gray matter volume and metabolic decrease ratios., Conclusions: Our study revealed specific structuro-metabolic pattern of fatal familial insomnia that demonstrated the essential roles of medial dorsal nuclei, anterior nuclei, and pulvinar, which may be a potential biomarker in diagnosis. Background: Scutellarin, a flavonoid purified from the Chinese herb Erigeron breviscapus, has been reported to prevent Alzheimer's disease (AD) by affecting Aβ assembly. Given the low brain uptake rate of scutellarin, we hypothesize that the microbiota-gut-brain axis may be a potential route by which scutellarin prevents AD., Objective: This study aimed to explore the microbiota-gut-brain mechanism by which scutellarin prevented AD., Methods: Scutellarin was administrated to APP/PS1 mouse model of AD for two months, and the behaviors, pathological changes as well as gut microbial changes in APP/PS1 mice were evaluated after scutellarin treatment., Results: This study found that scutellarin improved Aβ pathology, neuroinflammation, and cognitive deficits in APP/PS1 mice. It elucidated the effects of scutellarin on the diversity and activity of gut microbiota in APP/PS1 mice and these findings promoted us to focus on inflammation-related bacteria and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Cognitive behaviors were significantly associated with inflammatory cytokines and inflammation-related bacteria, suggesting that microbiota-gut-brain axis was involved in this model and that inflammatory pathway played a crucial role in this axis. Moreover, we observed that cAMP-PKA-CREB-HDAC3 pathway downstream of SCFAs was activated in microglia of AD and inactivated by scutellarin. Furthermore, by chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays, we found that the increased association between acetylated histone 3 and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) promoter in AD mice was reversed by scutellarin, leading to a decreased level of IL-1β in scutellarin-treated AD mice., Conclusion: Scutellarin reverses neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment in APP/PS1 mice via beneficial regulation of gut microbiota and cAMP-PKA-CREB-HDAC3 signaling in microglia.

Background: Pain after colon cancer surgery can be effectively relieved by transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block. We aimed to determine the optimal dose of dexmedetomidine for preemptive analgesia when combined with TAP block after colon cancer surgery., Methods: A total of 120 patients undergoing laparoscopic resection for colon cancer from March 2018 to October 2019 were randomly assigned to control (group C), low-dose (group L, 0.5 μg/kg), moderate-dose (group M, 1 μg/kg), and high-dose groups (group H, 1.5 μg/kg) (n=30 each). After puncture under ultrasound guidance, the designated dexmedetomidine dose and 0.25% ropivacaine were injected on both sides (20 mL each side). Mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), numeric rating scale (NRS) score, and Ramsay score were compared at 2 h (T0), 4 h (T1), 8 h (T2), 12 h (T3), 24 h (T4), and 48 h (T5) after surgery. The area sensitive to mechanical stimulation-induced pain at the incision was measured at T4, T5, and 72 h after surgery (T6). Adverse reactions were compared., Results: MAP and HR were lower in the dexmedetomidine groups, especially groups M and H, than in group C (P<0.05). NRS scores at T0-T5 and pain-sensitive areas at T4-T6 were lower in the dexmedetomidine groups than in group C (P<0.05), but Ramsay scores were similar (P>0.05). Compared with group L, groups M and H had lower NRS scores and pain-sensitive areas (P<0.05). The incidence rates of adverse reactions were lower in the dexmedetomidine groups than in group C (P<0.05)., Conclusions: Dexmedetomidine 1 or 1.5 μg/kg is effective and did not increase adverse reactions. A dose of 1 μg/kg is recommended as an adjuvant to ropivacaine for TAP block.

Background and Purpose: The anterior and posterior hippocampal networks represent verbal and spatial memory, respectively, and may play different roles in the pathological mechanism of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and non-amnestic MCI (naMCI), which has not been explored., Methods: A total of 990 older adults with 791 normal controls (NCs) (65 ± 6 years, 502 women), 140 aMCI (66 ± 7 years, 84 women) and 59 naMCI (66 ± 7 years, 38 women) were included. A multivariate method, partial least squares, was used to assess the structural covariance networks of the anterior hippocampus (aHC) and posterior hippocampus (pHC), and their relationships with verbal memory and spatial memory in the three groups., Results: Three aHC and pHC structural covariance network patterns emerged: (1) the age pattern; (2) the specific aMCI pattern; and (3) the spatial memory pattern. Furthermore, aMCI patients had more extensive and severe damage in the three patterns, and correlated with greater decline in verbal memory, which was mainly characterized by the aHC network., Conclusions: The aMCI and naMCI showed different patterns and damage in the structural covariance networks, and functional segregation of the aHC and pHC networks still exists in the process of pathological aging. In this paper, quantum correlation (QC) swapping for certain separable two-qubit mixed states is treated. A QC quantifier, measurement-induced disturbance (MID) (Luo in Phys Rev A 77:022301, 2008), is employed to characterize and quantify QCs in the relevant states. Properties of all QCs in the swapping process are revealed. Particularly, it is found that MID can be increased through QC swapping for certain separable two-qubit mixed states.

Changes in brain structure are associated with aging, and accompanied by the gradual deterioration of cognitive functions, which manifests differently in males and females. Here, we quantify the age-related spatial aging patterns of brain gray and white matter structures, their volume reduction rate, their relationships with specific cognitive functions, as well as differences between males and females in a cross-sectional nondementia dataset. We found that both males and females showed extensive age-related decreases in the volumes of most gray matter and white matter regions. Females have larger regions where the volume decreases with age and a greater slope (females: 0.199%, males: 0.183%) of volume decrease in gray matter. For white matter, no significant sex differences were found in age-related regions, and the slope of volume decrease. More significant associations were identified between brain structures and cognition in males during aging than females. This study explored the age-related regional variations in gray matter and white matter, as well as the sex differences in a nondemented elderly population. Facing considerable challenges associated with aging and dementia, China urgently needs an evidence-based health-care system for prevention and management of dementia. The Beijing Aging Brain Rejuvenation Initiative (BABRI) is a community-based cohort study initiated in 2008 that focuses on asymptomatic stages of dementia, aims to develop community-based prevention strategies for cognitive impairment, and provides a platform for scientific research and clinical trials. Thus far, BABRI has recruited 10,255 participants (aged 50 and over, 60.3% female), 2021 of whom have been followed up at least once at a 2- or 3-year interval. This article presents aims and study design of BABRI; summarizes preliminary behavioral and neuroimaging findings on mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and results of clinical trials on MCI; and discusses issues concerning early prevention in community, MCI diagnosis methods, and applications of database of aging and dementia. Purpose: Brain 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) is a sensitive technique for assisting in the diagnosis of patients with anti-leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1) antibody encephalitis. However, the common pattern of this disorder assessed by FDG PET remains unknown. The present study aimed to explore the glucose metabolic patterns of this disorder based on PET voxel analysis., Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 25 patients with anti-LGI1 encephalitis, who were admitted in Beijing Tiantan Hospital between September 2014 and July 2019. The glucose metabolic pattern was compared between the included patients and 44 age- and gender-matched healthy controls using Statistical Parametric Mapping. Then, the correlation between the metabolic pattern and scaled activities of daily living (ADLs) of the patients was assessed., Results: The median time from symptom onset to PET scans was 9 w (range:2-53w). The groupwise analysis revealed that patients with anti-LGI1 encephalitis had left hippocampal hypermetabolism and hypometabolism in almost all neocortical regions. The individual-level results showed most patients presented a decreased metabolism in neocortical regions, as well as an increase in metabolism in the hippocampus and basal ganglia. Furthermore, the metabolic gradient between hippocampus and neocortical regions was positively associated with the ADLs (frontal lobe, r=0.529, P=0.008; parietal lobe, r=0.474, P=0.019; occipital lobe, r=0.413, P=0.045; temporal lobe, r=0.490, P=0.015), respectively. In addition, the patients with facio-brachial dystonic seizures (FBDS) presented bilateral putamen hypermetabolism, when compared to patients without FBDS and healthy controls., Conclusion: Subcortical hypermetabolism associated with cortical hypometabolism presented with a common metabolic pattern in patients with anti-LGI1 encephalitis in the present study. All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) based on polymerized small molecular acceptors (PSMAs) have made significant progress recently. Here, we synthesize two A-DA'D-A small molecule acceptor based PSMAs of PS-Se with benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole A'-core and PN-Se with benzotriazole A'-core, for the studies of the effect of molecular structure on the photovoltaic performance of the PSMAs. The two PSMAs possess broad absorption with PN-Se showing more red-shifted absorption than PS-Se and suitable electronic energy levels for the application as polymer acceptors in the all-PSCs with PBDB-T as polymer donor. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy visualizes the aggregation behavior of the PBDB-T donor and the PSMA in their solutions. In addition, a bicontinuous-interpenetrating network in the PBDB-T:PN-Se blend film with aggregation size of 10~20 nm is clearly observed by the photoinduced force microscopy. Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is a global health burden and cognitive impairment is one of its most serious complication. Adequate interventions for AIS may have the potential to improve cognitive outcomes. In the present study, we selected Erigeron breviscapus (Vaniot) Hand.-Mazz. injection (Dengzhanxixin injection, DZXI), a widely used Chinese herbal injection, in contrast to edaravone as the positive control drug to test its potential to ameliorates neurological and cognitive impairments caused by AIS. We performed a 2-week randomized trial with these two drugs in AIS patients presenting mild to moderate cognitive impairments. Neuropsychological tests and MRI examinations showed that DZXI attenuated the neurological and cognitive impairments of patients and protected the grey matter in specific regions from ischemic damage. Notably, DZXI exerted better effects than edaravone in some neuropsychological tests, probably due to the protective effect of DZXI on grey matter. To explore the therapeutic mechanisms, we carried out an experiment with a middle cerebral artery occlusion rat model. We found that DZXI decreased the infarct volume and increased the survival of neuronal cells in the ischemic penumbra; furthermore, DZXI modulated the mitochondrial respiratory chain process and preserved the mitochondrial structure in the brain tissue. Optimization of morphology and precise control of miscibility between donors and acceptors play an important role in improving the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of all-small-molecule organic solar cells (SM-OSCs). Besides device optimization, methods such as additives and thermal annealing are applied for finely tuning bulk-heterojunction morphology; strategies of molecular design are also the key to achieve efficient phase separation. Here, a series of A-D-A-type small-molecule donors (SM4, SM8, and SM12) based on benzodithiophene units were synthesized with different lengths of alkylthio side chains to regulate crystallinity, and their miscibility with the acceptor (BO-4Cl) was investigated. Consequently, SM4 with a short alkylthio substituent had a high crystallization propensity, leading to the oversized molecular domains and the poor morphology of the active layer. Meanwhile, SM12 with a longer alkylthio substituent showed weak crystallinity, causing a relatively looser π-π stacking and thus adversely affecting charge-carrier transport. The SM-OSC based on the small-molecule donor SM8 with a mid-length alkylthio substituent achieved a better PCE over 13%, which was attributed to a more harmonious blend miscibility without sacrificing carrier-charge transport. Eventually, the modulation of phase separation and miscibility via controlling the lateral side chains has proven its potential in optimizing the blend morphology to aid the development of highly efficient SM-OSCs.
