Background: Surveillance recommendations for postoperative high-risk colorectal bone metastases patients remain in a gray area of guidelines. We aimed to develop a risk stratification system to select ideal candidates for follow-up of colorectal bone metastases status., Methods: Postoperative colorectal cancer patients were included to develop a risk-scoring system to predict bone metastases. Risk scores were calculated based on the predictive factors for bone metastases, which were identified using the Cox proportional hazard regression model. Kaplan-Meier curves visualize the differences between risk groups., Results: Eight risk factors (age, lymph node metastasis, pathologic tumor deposit, KRAS mutation status, suspicious retroperitoneal lymph node metastasis, lung metastasis status, largest thickness of colorectal cancer lesion, largest short diameter of lymph node) were predictors of colorectal bone metastases and incorporated into the risk scoring system, and the patients were categorized into 2 risk groups. In the low-risk group, the 1, 3, and 5-year colorectal bone metastases rates were 2.4%, 4.6%, and 3.7%, respectively, whereas in the high-risk group, the 1, 3, and 5-year colorectal bone metastases rates were 15.6%, 29.9%, and 44.4%, respectively. The risk scoring system exhibited a C-index of 0.706, 0.795, and 0.841 in 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively. The Kaplan-Meier curve demonstrates that the incidence of colorectal bone metastases was higher in the high-risk group than in the low-risk group (50.5% vs 11.4%, P < .001)., Conclusion: This risk-scoring system may be valuable in predicting colorectal bone metastases in colorectal cancer patients, and we suggest that colorectal bone metastases status surveillance be added in the high-risk group., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Inc. Colorful and fluorescent transparent materials have been extensively used in industrial and scientific activities, with inorganic and polymeric glasses being the most typical representatives. Recently, artificial glass originating from low-molecular-weight monomers has attracted considerable attention. Compared with the deep understanding of the building blocks and driving forces of supramolecular glass, related studies on its optical properties are insufficient in terms of systematicness and pertinence. In this study, a supramolecular strategy was applied to introduce versatile colors and fluorescence emissions into a low-molecular-weight glass. Pillar[5]arene and cucurbit[8]uril were selected to recognize the functional components and yield the desired optical performances. Macrocycle-based host-guest chemistry endows artificial glass with controllable and programmable colors and fluorescence emissions.

In recent years, the potential applications of two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) materials in fields like spintronics have drawn increasing attention. Inspired by the successful synthesis of a perthiolated coronene (PTC)-Fe MOF structure, this study explores the fine-tuning of its electronic and magnetic structure by substituting Fe elements with various transition metals. Our calculations demonstrate a substantial increase in the Curie temperature ( T c ) by a factor of 5 for Co and 10 for Mn when replacing Fe. This enhancement is attributed to the elevated electron density near the Fermi level, facilitating the generation of additional itinerant electrons crucial for the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange mechanism. However, substituting Fe with V, Cr, Ni, and Cu leads to a loss of ferromagnetic ground state. Our work enhances the understanding of the electronic and magnetic behavior of the 2D PTC-TM (transition metal) MOF family, and provides a promising avenue for engineering 2D magnetic MOF systems.

As the areca nut market is expanding, there is a growing concern regarding areca nut toxicity. Areca nut alkaloids are the major risky components in betel nuts, and their toxic effects are not fully understood. Here, we investigated the parental and transgenerational toxicity of varied doses of areca nut alkaloids in Caenorhabditis elegans . The results showed that the minimal effective concentration of arecoline is 0.2-0.4 mM. First, arecoline exhibited transgenerational toxicity on the worms' longevity, oviposition, and reproduction. Second, the redox homeostasis of C. elegans was markedly altered under exposure to 0.2-0.4 mM arecoline. The mitochondrial membrane potential was thereafter impaired, which was also associated with the induction of apoptosis. Moreover, antioxidant treatments such as lycopene could significantly ameliorate the toxic effects caused by arecoline. In conclusion, arecoline enhances the ROS levels, inducing neurotoxicity, developmental toxicity, and reproductive toxicity in C. elegans through dysregulated oxidative stress, cell apoptosis, and DNA damage-related gene expression. Therefore, the drug-induced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) may be crucial for its toxic effects, which could be mitigated by antioxidants.

We propose a novel miniaturized optical attenuator based on the evanescent-field coupling between two nanofibers. Benefiting from a wavelength-dependent waveguiding property of the coupled structure, a tunable attenuation with maximum extinction ratio of ~ 20 dB is demonstrated with an ultrawide optical bandwidth up to 0.7 μm in experiment. The wavelength-depended waveguiding properties of both one single nanofiber and coupled nanofibers are investigated in both theory and simulation. Using an adiabatic coupling structure, an attenuation range from - 0.16 dB to - 18.46 dB is obtained within a spectrum from 1.2 μm to 1.7 μm experimentally. Moreover, the simulated results indicate that, the attenuation only shows a slight change of ~ 0.1 dB with a lateral misalignment of 0.5 μm between the two nanofibers, indicating a high tolerance of this attenuator to the lateral misalignment. The Yellow River Delta played a vital role in the development of the Neolithic civilization of China. However, the population history of this region from the Neolithic transitions to the present remains poorly understood due to the lack of ancient human genomes. This especially holds for key Neolithic transitions and tumultuous turnovers of dynastic history. Here, we report genome-wide data from 69 individuals dating to 5,410-1,345 years before present (BP) at 0.008 to 2.49× coverages, along with 325 present-day individuals collected from 16 cities across Shandong. During the Middle to Late Dawenkou period, we observed a significant influx of ancestry from Neolithic Yellow River farmers in central China and some southern Chinese ancestry that mixed with local hunter-gatherers in Shandong. The genetic heritage of the Shandong Longshan people was found to be most closely linked to the Dawenkou culture. During the Shang to Zhou Dynasties, there was evidence of genetic admixture of local Longshan populations with migrants from the Central Plain. After the Qin to Han Dynasties, the genetic composition of the region began to resemble that of modern Shandong populations. Our genetic findings suggest that the middle Yellow River Basin farmers played a role in shaping the genetic affinity of neighboring populations in northern China during the Middle to Late Neolithic period. Moving boundaries of electrical double layers have shown promising capability in driving directional electron flows in solids, leading to a range of hydrovoltaic effects. The recent discovery of a photohydrovoltaic phenomenon utilizes a moving illumination zone to generate moving boundaries with different properties at the solid-water interface, referred to as the kinetic photovoltaic effect. Here, oxygen was found to act as a chemical switch to turn on and off the kinetic photovoltaic effect. Introducing oxygen would rapidly diminish the kinetic photovoltage in p-Si. On the contrary, degassing oxygen leads to a gradual recovery, whose rate can be facilely speeded up by more than one order through electrostatic gating. Mechanistic investigations of the oxygen switch behavior uncovered a dependence of surface band bending intensity of silicon on oxygen adsorption, which highlights the role of gas molecules, often overlooked, in applications based on semiconductor-liquid interfaces, such as photoelectrochemistry.

SUN5 , a testis-specific gene, is associated with acephalic spermatozoa syndrome (ASS). Here, we demonstrate that Sun5 is involved in mRNA export. In Sun5 -knockout mice ( Sun 5 -/- ), poly(A) + RNA accumulates in the nuclei of germ cells, leading to reduced sperm counts, decreased sperm motility and disrupted sperm head-to-tail junctions. Additionally, in the GC-2 germ cell line with RNA interference of Sun5 , heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) and poly (A) + RNA (mainly mRNA) are retained in the nucleus. Further mechanistic studies reveal that Sun5 interacts with Nxf1 (nuclear RNA export factor 1) and nucleoporin 93 (Nup93). Interference with Nup93 inhibits mRNA export. Treatment with leptomycin B to block the CRM1 pathway indicates that Sun5 regulates mRNA export through an Nxf1-dependent pathway. In Sun5 -/- mice, the binding of Nxf1 and Nup93 decreases due to loss of Sun5 function, and the process of submitting Nxf1-binding mRNPs to Nup93 is inhibited, resulting in abnormal spermatogenesis. Together, these data may elucidate a novel pathway for mRNA export in male germ cells.

Background: The accurate identification of microvascular invasion (MVI) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is of great clinical importance., Purpose: To develop a radiomics nomogram based on susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) and T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) for predicting MVI in early-stage (Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stages 0 and A) HCC patients., Materials and Methods: A prospective cohort of 189 participants with HCC was included for model training and testing, and an additional 34 participants were enrolled for external validation. ITK-SNAP was used to manually segment the tumour, and PyRadiomics was used to extract radiomic features from the SWI and T2W images. Variance filtering, student's t test, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression and random forest (RF) were applied to select meaningful features. Four machine learning classifiers, including K-nearest neighbour, RF, logistic regression and support vector machine-based models, were established. Independent clinical and radiological risk factors were also determined to establish a clinical model. The best radiomics and clinical models were further evaluated in the validation set. In addition, a nomogram was constructed from the radiomic model and independent clinical factors. Diagnostic efficacy was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis with fivefold cross-validation., Results: AFP levels greater than 400 ng/mL [odds ratio (OR) 2.50; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.239-5.047], tumour diameter greater than 5 cm (OR 2.39; 95% CI 1.178-4.839), and absence of pseudocapsule (OR 2.053; 95% CI 1.007-4.202) were found to be independent risk factors for MVI. The areas under the curve (AUCs) of the best radiomic model were 1.000 and 0.882 in the training and testing cohorts, respectively, while those of the clinical model were 0.688 and 0.6691. In the validation set, the radiomic model achieved better diagnostic performance (AUC = 0.888) than the clinical model (AUC = 0.602). The combination of clinical factors and the radiomic model yielded a nomogram with the best diagnostic performance (AUC = 0.948)., Conclusion: SWI and T2WI-derived radiomic features are valuable for noninvasively and accurately identifying MVI in early-stage HCC. Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a complication of cerebrovascular disease, which can increase mortality after stroke. CRH is one of the main signaling peptides released after activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in response to stress. It affects synaptic plasticity by regulating inflammation, oxidative stress and autophagy in the central nervous system. And the loss of spines exacerbates depression-like behavior. Therefore, synaptic deficits induced by CRH may be related to post-stroke depression. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The Keap1-Nrf2 complex is one of the core components of the antioxidant response. As an autophagy associated protein, p62 participates in the Keap1-NrF2 pathway through its Keap1 interaction domain. Oxidative stress is involved in the feedback regulation between Keap1-Nrf2 pathway and p62.However, whether the relationship between CRH and the Keap1-Nrf2-p62 pathway is involved in PSD remains unknown. This study found that serum levels of CRH in 22 patients with PSD were higher than those in healthy subjects. We used MCAO combined with CUMS single-cage SD rats to establish an animal model of PSD. Animal experiments showed that CRHR1 antagonist prevented synaptic loss in the hippocampus of PSD rats and alleviated depression-like behavior. CRH induced p62 accumulation in the prefrontal cortex of PSD rats through CRHR1. CRHR1 antagonist inhibited Keap1-Nrf2-p62 pathway by attenuating oxidative stress. In addition, we found that abnormal accumulation of p62 induces PSD. It alleviates depression-like behavior by inhibiting the expression of p62 and promoting the clearance of p62 in PSD rats. The proliferation of nitrile mixtures has significantly exacerbated environmental pollution. This study employed metagenomic analysis to investigate the short-term effects of nitrile mixtures on soil microbial communities and their metabolic functions. It also examined the responses of indigenous microorganisms and their functional metabolic genes across various land use types to different nitrile stressors. The nitrile compound treatments in this study resulted in an increase in the abundance of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes, while simultaneously reducing overall microbial diversity. The key genes involved in the denitrification process, namely, nirK, nosZ, and hao, were down-regulated, and NO 3 - -N, NO 2 - -N, and NH 4 + -N concentrations decreased by 7.7%-12.3%, 11.1%-21.3%, and 11.3%-30.9%, respectively. Notably, pond sludge samples exhibited a significant increase in the abundance of nitrogen fixation-related genes nifH, vnfK, vnfH, and vnfG following exposure to nitrile compounds. Furthermore, the fumarase gene fumD, which is responsible for catalyzing fumaric acid into malic acid in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, showed a substantial increase of 7.2-10.6-fold upon nitrile addition. Enzyme genes associated with the catechol pathway, including benB-xylY, dmpB, dmpC, dmpH, and mhpD, displayed increased abundance, whereas genes related to the benzoyl-coenzyme A pathway, such as bcrA, dch, had, oah, and gcdA, were notably reduced. In summary, complex nitrile compounds were found to significantly reduce the species diversity of soil microorganisms. Nitrile-tolerant microorganisms demonstrated the ability to degrade and adapt to nitrile pollutants by enhancing functional enzymes involved in the catechol pathway and fenugreek conversion pathway. Thioctic acid (TA) has been widely used to construct soft materials via supramolecular copolymerization with organic chemicals. In this study, TA and the inorganic compound MoS 2 are used to fabricate poly[TA-MoS2] via dynamic covalent and supramolecular interactions. Poly[TA-MoS2] exhibits good and long-lasting adhesion performance on various artificial surfaces, with an adhesion strength up to 3.72 MPa (15 days). Further, it exhibits tough adhesion effects in an aqueous environment. Moreover, poly[TA-MoS2] displays good thermal processing behavior, thus enabling its molding through 3D printing.

In recent years, the progressively escalating incidence and exceptionally high fatality rate of cutaneous melanoma have drawn the attention of numerous scholars. Magnetic induction hyperthermia, as an efficacious tumor treatment modality, has been promoted and applied in the therapy of some tumors. In this paper, the melanoma atop the mice's heads was chosen as the research subject, and a magnetic induction hyperthermia approach based on Helmholtz coils as the magnetic field excitation was investigated and designed. The influence of the electromagnetic field and thermal field on organisms was addressed through modeling by COMSOL simulation software. The results showed that the maximum values of induced electric field and magnetic induction strength in mouse tumor tissues were 63.1 V/m and 8.5621 mT, respectively, which reached the threshold value of magnetic field strength required for magnetic induction hyperthermia. The maxima of the induced electric field and magnetic induction intensity in brain tissues are, respectively, 35.828 V/m and 8.57 mT. Approximately 93% of the tumor tissue can reach 42 °C, and the maximum temperature is 44.2 °C. Within this temperature range, a large quantity of tumor cells can be successfully induced to undergo apoptosis without harming normal cells, and the therapeutic effect is favorable.

Objectives: Melittin, the main component of bee venom, is a natural anti-inflammatory substance, in addition to its ability to fight cancer, antiviral, and useful in diabetes treatment. This study seeks to determine whether melittin can protect renal tissue from sepsis-induced damage by preventing ferroptosis and explore the protective mechanism., Methods: In this study, we investigated the specific protective mechanism of melittin against sepsis-induced renal injury by screening renal injury indicators and ferroptosis -related molecules and markers in animal and cellular models of sepsis., Results: Our results showed that treatment with melittin attenuated the pathological changes in mice with lipopolysaccharide-induced acute kidney injury. Additionally, we found that melittin attenuated ferroptosis in kidney tissue by enhancing GPX4 expression, which ultimately led to the reduction of kidney tissue injury. Furthermore, we observed that melittin enhanced NRF2 nuclear translocation, which consequently upregulated GPX4 expression. our findings suggest that melittin may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of sepsis-associated acute kidney injury by inhibiting ferroptosis through the GPX4/NRF2 pathway., Conclusions: Our study reveals the protective mechanism of melittin in septic kidney injury and provides a new therapeutic direction for Sepsis-AKI.

Acephalic spermatozoa syndrome (ASS) is a severe teratospermia with decaudated, decapitated, and malformed sperm, resulting in male infertility. Nuclear envelope protein SUN5 localizes to the junction between the sperm head and tail. Mutations in the SUN5 gene have been identified most frequently (33-47%) in ASS cases, and its molecular mechanism of action is yet to be explored. In the present study, we generated Sun5 knockout mice, which presented the phenotype of ASS. Nuclear membrane protein LaminB1 and cytoskeletal GTPases Septin12 and Septin2 were identified as potential partners for interacting with SUN5 by immunoprecipitation-mass spectrometry in mouse testis. Further studies demonstrated that SUN5 connected the nucleus by interacting with LaminB1 and connected the proximal centriole by interacting with Septin12. The binding between SUN5 and Septin12 promoted their aggregation together in the sperm neck. The disruption of the LaminB1/SUN5/Septin12 complex by Sun5 deficiency caused separation of the Septin12-proximal centriole from the nucleus, leading to the breakage of the head-to-tail junction. Background: Regional lymph node metastasis (LNM) assessment is crucial for predicting intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) prognosis. However, imaging assessment has limitations for identifying LNM., Purpose: To investigate the association between MRI radiomics features, regional LNM status, and prognosis in iCCA., Study Type: Retrospective., Subjects: Two hundred ninety-six patients (male = 197) with surgically confirmed iCCA., Field Strength/sequence: 1.5 T and 3.0 T. DWI, T2WI, and contrast-enhanced T1WI., Assessment: Clinical information, radiologic, and MRI-based radiomics features associated with LNM status were collected to establish models. Performance of MRI, PET/CT, and the combined LNM models were compared in training (N = 207) and test (N = 89) datasets. Overall survival (OS) was compared based on LNM status., Statistical Tests: The independent features were selected by 5-fold cross-validation. The performance of MRI, PET/CT, and the models was evaluated using the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Univariable and multivariable Cox regression were used to identify independent variables for OS. Kaplan-Meier curves were compared with the log-rank test between LNM positive and negative groups. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: Intrahepatic duct dilatation, enhancement pattern, and CA19-9 were independent clinicoradiologic features. The radiomics model was constructed by the independent radiomics features extracted from T2WI and delay phase T1WI. The combined LNM model showed AUC of 0.888, 0.884, and 0.811 in training, validation, and test cohorts with a positive net benefit. PET/CT exhibited similar sensitivity to the combined LNM model (0.750 vs. 0.733, P > 0.999) while the combined LNM model showed higher specificity (0.703 vs. 0.630, P = 0.039) in the test cohort. A self-powered photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptamer sensor based on ZnIn 2 S 4 as the photoanode and Cu 2 O@Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 as the sensing cathode is designed for the detection of Hg 2+ . An indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode modified with ZnIn 2 S 4 was used instead of a platinum (Pt) counter electrode to provide an obviously stable photocurrent signal. The suitable band gap width of ZnIn 2 S 4 can generate photogenerated electrons well. The unique hydrangea structure of ZnIn 2 S 4 can enhance light absorption and accelerate the separation and transfer of photocarriers. At the same time, Cu 2 O@Ag@Ag 3 PO 4 with excellent electrical conductivity further enhances the photocurrent provided by the ZnIn 2 S 4 photoanode. Because the reducing substances in the biological medium can change the photoanode characteristics of the photoanode interface, the separation of the photoanode and the sensing bicathode is beneficial to improve the anti-interference ability of the sensor. Under optimized conditions, the PEC aptamer sensor realizes the detection of Hg 2+ (1 mM-1 fM), and the detection limit is 0.4 fM. Objectives: Impeded diffusion fraction (IDF) is a novel and promising diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) technique that allows for the detection of various diffusion compartments, including macromolecular coordinated water, free diffusion, perfusion, and cellular free water. This study aims to investigate the clinical potential of IDF-DWI in detecting microvascular invasion (MVI) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)., Methods: 66 patients were prospectively included. Metrics derived from IDF-DWI and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) were calculated. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to identify clinical risk factors. Diagnostic performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC-ROC), the area under the precision-recall curve (AUC-PR), and the calibration error (cal-error). Additionally, a power analysis was conducted to determine the required sample size., Results: The results suggested a significantly higher fraction of impeded diffusion (F ID ) originating from IDF-DWI in MVI-positive HCCs (p < 0.001). Moreover, the ADC was found to be significantly lower in MVI-positive HCCs (p = 0.019). Independent risk factors of MVI included larger tumor size and elevated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels. The nomogram model incorporating ADC, F ID , tumor size, and AFP level yielded the highest diagnostic accuracy for MVI (AUC-PR = 0.804, AUC-ROC = 0.783, cal-error = 0.044), followed by F ID (AUC-PR = 0.693, AUC-ROC = 0.760, cal-error = 0.060) and ADC (AUC-PR = 0.570, AUC-ROC = 0.651, cal-error = 0.164)., Conclusion: IDF-DWI shows great potential in noninvasively, accurately, and preoperatively detecting MVI in HCC and may offer clinical benefits for prognostic prediction and determination of treatment strategy., (© 2024. Clean, energy-free methods of cooling are an effective way to respond to the global energy crisis. To date, cooling materials using passive daytime radiative cooling (RC) technology have been applied in the fields of energy-efficient buildings, solar photovoltaic cooling, and insulating textiles. However, RC materials frequently suffer from comprehensive damage to their microstructure, resulting in the loss of their initial cooling effect in complex outdoor environments. Here, a superhydrophobic daytime passive RC porous film with environmental tolerance (SRCP film) was fabricated, which integrated strong solar reflectivity (approximately 90%), mid-infrared emissivity (approximately 0.97), and superhydrophobicity (water contact angle (WCA) of 160° and sliding angle of 3°). This study revealed that SRCP film had an average reflectivity of 14.3% higher than SiO 2 particles in the 0.3-2.5 μm wavelength region, achieving a cooling effect of 13.2 °C in ambient conditions with a solar irradiance of 946 W·m -2 and a relative humidity of 74% due to the synergistic effect of effective solar reflection and thermal infrared emission. In addition, empirical results showed that the attained films possessed outstanding environmental tolerance, maintaining high WCA (156°), stable cooling effect (8.3 °C), and low SiO 2 loss (less than 5.1%) after 30 consecutive days of UV irradiation and 14 days of corrosion with acidic and alkaline solutions. More importantly, this work could be flexibly prepared by various methods without the use of any fluorine-containing reagents, which greatly widens the practical application scope.

Supramolecular glass is a non-covalently cross-linked amorphous material that exhibits excellent optical properties and unique intrinsic structural features. Compared with artificial inorganic/organic glass, which has been extensively developed, supramolecular glass is still in the infancy stage, and itself is rarely recognized and studied thus far. Herein, we present the development of the host-guest molecular recognition motifs between methyl-β-cyclodextrin and para-hydroxybenzoic acid as the building blocks of supramolecular glass. Non-covalent polymerization resulting from the host-guest complexation and hydrogen bonding formation enables high transparency and bulk state to supramolecular glass. Various advantages, including recyclability, compatibility, and thermal processability, are associated with dynamic assembly pattern. Short-range order (host-guest complexation) and long-range disorder (three dimensional polymeric network) structures are identified simultaneously, thus demonstrating the typical structural characteristics of glass. Background: Posthepatectomy liver failure remains a potentially life-threatening complication after hepatectomy. Soluble suppression of tumourigenicity 2 is an injury-related biomarker. The aim of the study was to assess soluble suppression of tumourigenicity 2 elevation after hepatectomy and whether it can predict posthepatectomy liver failure., Methods: This was a single-centre retrospective study including all patients who underwent a liver resection between 2015 and 2019. Plasma concentrations of soluble suppression of tumourigenicity 2 were measured before surgery and at postoperative days 1, 2, 5 and 7. Posthepatectomy liver failure was defined according to the International Study Group of Liver Surgery and the morbidity rate was graded according to the Clavien-Dindo classification., Results: A total of 173 patients were included (75 underwent major and 98 minor resection); plasma levels of soluble suppression of tumourigenicity 2 increased from 43.42 (range 18.69-119.96) pg/ml to 2622.23 (range 1354.18-4178.27) pg/ml on postoperative day 1 (P < 0.001). Postoperative day 1 soluble suppression of tumourigenicity 2 concentration accurately predicted posthepatectomy liver failure ≥ grade B (area under curve = 0.916, P < 0.001) and its outstanding performance was not affected by underlying disease, liver pathological status and extent of resection. The cut-off value, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of postoperative day 1 soluble suppression of tumourigenicity 2 in predicting posthepatectomy liver failure ≥ grade B were 3700, 92%, 85%, 64% and 97% respectively. Soluble suppression of tumourigenicity 2high patients more frequently experienced posthepatectomy liver failure ≥ grade B (64.3% (n = 36) versus 2.6% (n = 3)) and Clavien-Dindo IIIa higher morbidity rate (23.2% (n = 13) versus 5.1% (n = 6)) compared with soluble suppression of tumourigenicity 2low patients., Conclusions: Soluble suppression of tumourigenicity 2 may be a reliable predictor of posthepatectomy liver failure ≥ grade B as early as postoperative day 1 for patients undergoing liver resection. Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is an newly emerged enteropathogenic coronavirus, mainly causing diarrhea in suckling piglets, and also has the potential for cross-species transmission. However, there are no effective vaccines or specific therapeutic agents for PDCoV. This study investigates the antiviral properties of baicalein against PDCoV infection in swine testicle cells (ST). It reveals that baicalein exerts a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on PDCoV replication, primarily targeting the replication stage of the viral infection by impeding viral RNA and protein synthesis. Furthermore, treatment with baicalein leads to reduced phosphorylation of PI3K, AKT, and NF-κB p65 proteins, along with decreased mRNA levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α). These results signify that PDCoV replication is inhibited through the inhibition of the PI3K-Akt-NF-κB protein signaling pathway, thereby suppressing the inflammatory response. Objectives: Habitat imaging allows for the quantification and visualization of various subregions within the tumor. We aim to develop an approach using diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI)-based habitat imaging for preoperatively predicting the microvascular invasion (MVI) of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)., Methods: Sixty-five patients were prospectively included and underwent multi-b DWI examinations. Based on the true diffusion coefficient (D t ), perfusion fraction (f), and mean kurtosis coefficient (MK), which respectively characterize cellular density, perfusion, and heterogeneity, the HCCs were divided into four habitats. The volume fraction of each habitat was quantified. The logistic regression was used to explore the risk factors from habitat fraction and clinical variables. Clinical, habitat, and nomogram models were constructed using the identified risk factors from clinical characteristics, habitat fraction, and their combination, respectively. The diagnostic accuracy was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs)., Results: MVI-positive HCC exhibited a significantly higher fraction of habitat 4 (f 4 ) and a significantly lower fraction of habitat 2 (f 2 ) (p < 0.001), which were selected as risk factors. Additionally, tumor size and elevated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) were also included as risk factors for MVI. The nomogram model demonstrated the highest diagnostic performance (AUC = 0.807), followed by the habitat model (AUC = 0.777) and the clinical model (AUC = 0.708). Anlotinib is effective in treatment of many kinds of malignant cancer, but its antineoplastic effects on esophageal cancer remains unclear. This study aims to investigate its impact on esophageal cancer and the underlying mechanisms. Anlotiniband 5-fluorouracil + cisplatin (5-FU + DDP) was administered separately to human esophageal cancer TE- 1 cells tumor xenograft mouse models every 3 days. Tumor size and body weight were measured before each treatment and at the end of the experiment. In vitro studies were conducted using TE- 1 cells to examine the effects of Anlotinib. Cell viability, migration, proliferation, apoptosis, cell cycle, their regulatory proteins and the transcriptomic changes were analyzed. Anlotinib reduced tumor size, tumor weight, and the ratio of tumor weight to body weight in vivo. It decreased the viability of TE- 1 cells, with a 50% growth-inhibitory concentration of 9.454 μM for 24 h, induced apoptosis, and arrested TE- 1 cell cycle in the S phase. It inhibited migration and proliferation while negatively regulating the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway. Enhanced expressions of P21, Bax, and lowered expressions of cyclin A1, cyclin B1, CDK1, PI3K, Akt, p-Akt, and Bcl-2 were observed after Anlotinib treatment. Background: To compare the compartmentalized diffusion-weighted models, intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) and restriction spectrum imaging (RSI), in characterizing breast lesions and normal fibroglandular tissue., Methods: This prospective study enrolled 152 patients with 157 histopathologically verified breast lesions (41 benign and 116 malignant). All patients underwent a full-protocol preoperative breast MRI, including a multi-b-value DWI sequence. The diffusion parameters derived from the mono-exponential model (ADC), IVIM model (Dt, Dp, f), and RSI model (C 1 , C 2 , C 3 , C 1 C 2 , F 1 , F 2 , F 3 , F 1 F 2 ) were quantitatively measured and then compared among malignant lesions, benign lesions and normal fibroglandular tissues using Kruskal-Wallis test. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used for the pairwise comparisons. Diagnostic models were built by logistic regression analysis. The ROC analysis was performed using five-fold cross-validation and the mean AUC values were calculated and compared to evaluate the discriminative ability of each parameter or model., Results: Almost all quantitative diffusion parameters showed significant differences in distinguishing malignant breast lesions from both benign lesions (other than C 2 ) and normal fibroglandular tissue (all parameters) (all P < 0.0167). In terms of the comparisons of benign lesions and normal fibroglandular tissues, the parameters derived from IVIM (Dp, f) and RSI (C 1 , C 2 , C 1 C 2 , F 1 , F 2 , F 3 ) showed significant differences (all P < 0.005). When using individual parameters, RSI-derived parameters-F 1 , C 1 C 2 , and C 2 values yielded the highest AUCs for the comparisons of malignant vs. benign, malignant vs. normal tissue and benign vs. normal tissue (AUCs = 0.871, 0.982, and 0.863, respectively). Furthermore, the combined diagnostic model (IVIM + RSI) exhibited the highest diagnostic efficacy for the pairwise discriminations (AUCs = 0.893, 0.991, and 0.928, respectively)., Conclusions: Quantitative parameters derived from the three-compartment RSI model have great promise as imaging indicators for the differential diagnosis of breast lesions compared with the bi-exponential IVIM model. In agriculture, soil-borne fungal pathogens, especially Fusarium oxysporum strains, are posing a serious threat to efforts to achieve global food security. In the search for safer agrochemicals, silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs) have recently been proposed as a new tool to alleviate pathogen damage including Fusarium wilt. Hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs), a unique class of SiO 2 NPs, have been widely accepted as desirable carriers for pesticides. However, their roles in enhancing disease resistance in plants and the specific mechanism remain unknown. In this study, three sizes of HMSNs (19, 96, and 406 nm as HMSNs-19, HMSNs-96, and HMSNs-406, respectively) were synthesized and characterized to determine their effects on seed germination, seedling growth, and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli (FOP) suppression. The three HMSNs exhibited no side effects on cowpea seed germination and seedling growth at concentrations ranging from 100 to 1500 mg/L. The inhibitory effects of the three HMSNs on FOP mycelial growth were very weak, showing inhibition ratios of less than 20% even at 2000 mg/L. Foliar application of HMSNs, however, was demonstrated to reduce the FOP severity in cowpea roots in a size- and concentration-dependent manner. The three HMSNs at a low concentration of 100 mg/L, as well as HMSNs-19 at a high concentration of 1000 mg/L, were observed to have little effect on alleviating the disease incidence. HMSNs-406 were most effective at a concentration of 1000 mg/L, showing an up to 40.00% decline in the disease severity with significant growth-promoting effects on cowpea plants. Moreover, foliar application of HMSNs-406 (1000 mg/L) increased the salicylic acid (SA) content in cowpea roots by 4.3-fold, as well as the expression levels of SA marker genes of PR-1 (by 1.97-fold) and PR-5 (by 9.38-fold), and its receptor gene of NPR-1 (by 1.62-fold), as compared with the FOP infected control plants. Meanwhile, another resistance-related gene of PAL was also upregulated by 8.54-fold. Three defense-responsive enzymes of POD, PAL, and PPO were also involved in the HMSNs-enhanced disease resistance in cowpea roots, with varying degrees of reduction in activity. These results provide substantial evidence that HMSNs exert their Fusarium wilt suppression in cowpea plants by activating SA-dependent SAR (systemic acquired resistance) responses rather than directly suppressing FOP growth. Overall, for the first time, our results indicate a new role of HMSNs as a potent resistance inducer to serve as a low-cost, highly efficient, safe and sustainable alternative for plant disease protection.

The accurate diagnosis of diseases can be improved by detecting multiple biomarkers simultaneously. This study presents the development of a magnetic photoelectrochemical (PEC) immunosensor array for the simultaneous detection of amyloid-β 42 (Aβ) and microtubule-associated protein (Tau), which are markers for neurodegenerative disorders. A metal-organic framework (MOF) derivative, Fe 2 O 3 @FeS 2 magnetic composites with exceptional photoelectric and ferromagnetic properties was synthesized while preserving the original structure and advantages. Thus, the immunoassembly process of the sensor can be carried out in homogeneous solution and recovered by magnetic separation. For simultaneous detection, a chip is divided into multiple independent sensing sites, which have the same preparation and detection environment, allowing for the implementation of a self-calibration method. The sensor array demonstrates considerable detection ranges of 0.01-100 ng mL -1 for Aβ and 0.05-100 ng mL -1 for Tau, with low detection limits of 2.1 pg mL -1 for Aβ and 7.9 pg mL -1 for Tau. Background: Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) are the two most frequently performed techniques in treating obesity and its related comorbidities. We aimed to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of LSG with LRYGB in terms of short- and mid-term outcomes of weight loss, obesity-related comorbidities, and post-operative complications via a meta-analysis of RCTs., Methods: Clinical comparative RCTs on LSG and LRYGB were searched through PubMed, MEDLINE, and Web of Science databases from inception to August 2022. Pooled outcomes from the selected studies were discussed by the random-effect meta-analysis method. Quality assessment and risk of bias for selected RCTs were implemented, and all the statistical analyses were performed., Results: Twenty studies, including 1270 patients, were enrolled. Meta-analysis results indicated the great superior efficacy of LRYGB to LSG in BMI loss at 6 (MD -1.35 kg/m 2 , 95% CI: -2.07 to -0.62, p = 0.0003), 12 months (MD -1.09 kg/m 2 , 95% CI: -1.86 to -0.33, p = 0.005), and 36 months (MD -1.47 kg/m 2 , 95% CI: -2.77 to -0.16, p = 0.03) as well as %EWL gaining at 36 months. Significantly higher remission rates of T2DM and dyslipidemia were achieved by LRYGB at 12 months. Besides, better improvements for T2DM-related and lipid biochemical parameters were found favoring LRYGB. However, LSG resulted in a lower post-operative complication rate and shorter operating time., Conclusions: Present meta-analysis results suggested that LRYGB was superior to LSG concerning short- and mid-term weight loss, short-term T2DM remission efficacy, and related biochemical parameters. Purpose: Varying diffusion curvature (VDC) MRI is an emerging diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) technique that can capture non-Gaussian diffusion behavior and reflect tissue heterogeneity. However, its clinical utility has hardly been evaluated. We aimed to investigate the value of the VDC technique in noninvasively assessing microvascular invasion (MVI) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)., Methods: 74 patients with HCCs, including 39 MVI-positive and 35 MVI-negative HCCs were included into this prospective study. Quantitative metrics between subgroups, clinical risk factors, as well as diagnostic performance were evaluated. The power analysis was also carried out to determine the statistical power., Results: MVI-positive HCCs exhibited significantly higher VDC-derived structural heterogeneity measure, D 1 (0.680 ± 0.100 × 10 -3 vs 0.572 ± 0.148 × 10 -3  mm 2 /s, p = 0.001) and lower apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) (1.350 ± 0.166 × 10 -3 vs 1.471 ± 0.322 × 10 -3  mm 2 /s, p = 0.0495) compared to MVI-negative HCCs. No statistical significance was observed for VDC-derived diffusion coefficient, D 0 between the subgroups (p = 0.562). Tumor size (odds ratio (OR) = 1.242) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) (OR = 2.527) were identified as risk factors for MVI. A predictive nomogram was constructed based on D 1 , ADC, tumor size, and AFP, which exhibited the highest diagnostic accuracy (AUC = 0.817), followed by D 1 (AUC = 0.753) and ADC (AUC = 0.647). Purpose: To construct an MRI-based habitat imaging model to help predict component percentage in combined hepatocellular carcinoma-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CCA) preoperatively, and investigate the biologic underpinnings of habitat imaging in cHCC-CCA., Methods: The study consisted of one retrospective model-building dataset and one prospective validation dataset from two hospitals. All voxels were assigned into different clusters according to the similarity of enhancement pattern by using K-means clustering method, and each habitat's volume fraction in each lesion was calculated. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis was performed to select optimal predictors, and then to establish an MRI-based habitat imaging model. R-squared was calculated to evaluate performance of the prediction models. Model performance was also verified in the prospective dataset with RNA sequencing data, and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis was then applied to investigate the biologic underpinnings of habitat imaging., Results: A total of 129 patients were enrolled (mean age, 56.1 ± 10.4, 102 man), among which 104 patients were in the retrospective model-building set, while 25 patients in the prospective validation set. Three habitats, habitat1 (HCC-alike habitat), habitat2 (iCCA-alike habitat), and habitat3 (in-between habitat), were identified. Habitat 1's volume fraction, habitat 3's volume fraction, nonrim APHE, nonperipheral washout, and LI-RADS categorization were selected to develop an HCC percentage prediction model with R-squared of 0.611 in the model-building set and 0.541 in the validation set. Habitat 1's volume fraction was correlated with genes involved in regulation of actin cytoskeleton and Rap1 signaling pathway, which regulate cell migration and tumor metastasis., Conclusion: Preoperative prediction of HCC percentage in patients with cHCC-CCA was achieved using an MRI-based habitat imaging model, which may correlate with signaling pathways regulating cell migration and tumor metastasis., (© 2024. The circadian clock controls the expression of a large proportion of protein-coding genes in mammals and can modulate a wide range of physiological processes. Recent studies have demonstrated that disruption or dysregulation of the circadian clock is involved in the development and progression of several diseases, including cancer. The cell cycle is considered to be the fundamental process related to cancer. Accumulating evidence suggests that the circadian clock can control the expression of a large number of genes related to the cell cycle. This article reviews the mechanism of cell cycle-related genes whose chromatin regulatory elements are rhythmically occupied by core circadian clock transcription factors, while their RNAs are rhythmically expressed. This article further reviews the identified oscillatory cell cycle-related genes in higher organisms such as baboons and humans. The potential functions of these identified genes in regulating cell cycle progression are also discussed. Investigating the oxygen transport law within the Membrane Electrode Assembly at intermediate temperatures (80-120 °C) is crucial for enhancing fuel cell efficiency. This study analyzed the resistance to oxygen transport within the Membrane Electrode Assembly at intermediate temperatures using limiting current density and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The study findings reveal that, as temperature progressively increases, the Ostwald ripening effect leads to a 34% rise in the local oxygen transport resistance (R local ) in relation to the pressure-independent resistance (R np ) within the cathode catalytic layer. Concurrently, the total transport resistance (R total ) decreases from 27.8% to 37.5% due to an increase in the gas diffusion coefficient and molecular reactivity; additionally, there is a decrease in the amount of liquid water inside the membrane electrode. A three-dimensional multiphysics field steady-state model was also established. The model demonstrates that the decrease in oxygen partial pressure can be mitigated effectively by increasing the back pressure at intermediate temperatures to ensure the cell's performance.

Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is an enteropathogenic coronavirus that mainly causes diarrhea in suckling piglets, and also has the potential for cross-species transmission. However, there are still no commercial vaccines available to prevent and control PDCoV infection. In this study, PDCoV strain HNZK-02 was serially propagated in vitro for up to 150 passages and the amino acid changes have mainly occurred in the S protein during serial passage which caused structure change. PDCoV HNZK-02-passage 5 (P5)-infected piglets exhibited acute and severe watery diarrhea, an obvious intestinal damage, while the piglets infected with PDCoV HNZK-02-P150 showed no obvious clinical signs, weak intestinal lesions, and lower viral loads in rectal swabs and various tissues. Compared with the PDCoV HNZK-02-P5 infection, HNZK-02-P150 infection resulted in a decrease in intestinal mucosal permeability and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, PDCoV HNZK-02-P5 infection had significantly reduced bacterial diversity and increased relative abundance of opportunistic pathogens, while PDCoV HNZK-02-P150 infection did not significantly affect the bacterial diversity, and the relative abundance of probiotics increased. Furthermore, the alterations of gut microbiota were closely related to the change of pro-inflammatory factor. Metagenomics prediction analysis demonstrated that HNZK-02-P150 modulated the tyrosine metabolism, Nucleotide-binding and oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptor signaling pathway, and lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis, which coincided with lower inflammatory response and intestinal permeability in the piglets infected with HNZK-02-P150. In conclusion, the PDCoV HNZK-02 was successfully attenuated by serial passage in vitro , and the changes of S gene, metabolic function, and gut microbiota may contribute to the attenuation. The PDCoV HNZK-02-P150 may have the potential for developing live-attenuated vaccine.IMPORTANCEPorcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is an enteropathogen causing severe diarrhea, dehydration, and death in nursing piglets, devastating great economic losses for the global swine industry, and has cross-species transmission and zoonotic potential. Here, the PDCoV virulent HNZK-02 strain was successfully attenuated by serial passage on cell cultures, and the pathogenesis and effects on the gut microbiota composition and metabolic function of the PDCoV HNZK-02-P5 and P150 strains were investigated in piglets. Exploring anticorrosion electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials in harsh conditions remains a challenge. Herein, S-NiSe/HG nanocomposites encapsulated in room-temperature self-healing polyurethane (S-NiSe/HG/SPU) were exploited as superior anticorrosion EMW absorbing materials. A dual-defect engineering collaborative Schottky interface construction endows S-NiSe/HG with a high vacancy concentration, abundant defects, and moderate conductivity. These structural merits synergistically balance dielectric loss by enhancing dipole-interface polarization loss and optimizing conduction loss. As a result, S-NiSe/HG demonstrates the optimal EMW absorption performance with a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of -54.8 dB and an adequate absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 7.1 GHz. Besides, S-NiSe/HG/SPU combines the maze effect of S-NiSe/HG with the active repair capability of SPU, thereby providing long-term corrosion resistance for the Mg alloy. Even under corrosion for 10 days, S-NiSe/HG/SPU affords a low corrosion current density (1.3 × 10 -5 A) and high charge transfer resistance (3796 Ω cm 2 ). Overall, this work provides valuable insights for in-depth exploration of dielectric loss and development of multifunctional EMW-absorbing materials.

Background: The causal association between gut microbiota (GM) and the development of diabetic nephropathy (DN) remains uncertain. We sought to explore this potential association using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis., Methods: Genome-wide association study (GWAS) data for GM were obtained from the MiBioGen consortium. GWAS data for DN and related phenotypes were collected from the FinngenR9 and CKDGen databases. The inverse variance weighted (IVW) model was used as the primary analysis model, supplemented by various sensitivity analyses. Heterogeneity was assessed using Cochran's Q test, while horizontal pleiotropy was evaluated through MR-Egger regression and the MR-PRESSO global test. Reverse MR analysis was conducted to identify any reverse causal effects., Results: Our analysis identified twenty-five bacterial taxa that have a causal association with DN and its related phenotypes (p < 0.05). Among them, only the g&#95;Eubacterium&#95;coprostanoligenes&#95;group showed a significant causal association with type 1 DN (p < Bonferroni-adjusted p-value). Our findings remained consistent regardless of the analytical approach used, with all methods indicating the same direction of effect. No evidence of heterogeneity or horizontal pleiotropy was observed. Reverse MR analysis did not reveal any causal associations., Conclusions: This study established a causal association between specific GM and DN. A novel method for electrochemical lactonization via C( sp 3 )-H functionalization was developed. This metal- and oxidant-free strategy enabled the efficient synthesis of various lactones. Gram-scale reaction and derivatization of the lactone product demonstrated the synthetic utility of this methodology. Mechanistic studies using control experiments and CV curves elucidated the proposed intramolecular HAT and the oxidative cyclization pathway. An unusual Shono-type oxidation was realized through this electrochemical approach, proceeding without a traditional nucleophilic addition process.

Herein, using density functional theory, novel two-dimensional (2D) CrInX 2 (X = S, Se, Te) structures are predicted to be practical ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductors. Phonon vibrations and molecular dynamics simulations verified their structural and thermodynamic stability. Sizable fully spin-polarized band gaps of 1.03 and 0.69 eV are found for CrInS 2 and CrInSe 2 , while CrInTe 2 exhibits half-metallic band nature (at 0 K with a perfect lattice). The high magnetic anisotropy energies are responsible for their long-range spin polarization. The Curie temperatures ( T c ) are estimated to be 347, 397 and 447 K for CrInS 2 , CrInSe 2 and CrInTe 2 , respectively, all well above the room-temperature. The high T c originates from unusual FM direct exchange, the efficient super-exchange coupling between neighboring Cr e g -orbitals with zero virtual exchange gaps and the presence of dual Cr-X-Cr super-exchange channels. Our systematic study of the CrInX 2 monolayer suggests that it could be a promising material for spintronics applications.

The rational transformation and utilization of biomass have attracted increasing attention because of its high importance in sustainable development and green economy. In this study, we used a supramolecular approach to convert biomass into functional materials. Six biomass raw materials with distinct chemical structures and physical properties were copolymerized with thioctic acid (TA) to afford poly[TA-biomass]s. The solvent-free copolymerization leads to the convenient and quantitative fabrication of biomass-based versatile materials. The non-covalent bonding and reversible solid-liquid transitions in poly[TA-biomass]s endow them with diversified features, including thermal processability, 3D printing, wet and dry adhesion, recyclability, impact resistance, and antimicrobial activity. Benefiting from their good biocompatibility and nontoxicity, these biomass-based materials are promising candidates for biological applications.

Coronavirus disease 2019, which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), remains an ongoing global public health challenge. This disease causes damage not only to the respiratory system, affecting the normal physiological function of the lungs, but also to other vital organs, such as the heart and testicles. Existing studies have shown that co-expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and transmembrane serine protease 2 is the main mechanism by which SARS-CoV-2 invades host cells. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2-expressing cells are widespread in the corpus cavernosum, reproductive tract and testis of men, which has raised concerns. Furthermore, abnormal sex hormone levels and decreased semen parameters were observed in coronavirus disease 2019 patients. This study comprehensively assessed the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the testis, semen parameters, sex hormone levels and erectile function, and discussed possible transmission routes during sexual intercourse and the effect of vaccination on male fertility.

Here, we report the production of 3D-printed MoS 2 /Ni electrodes (3D-MoS 2 /Ni) with long-term stability and excellent performance by the selective laser melting (SLM) technique. As a cathode, the obtained 3D-MoS 2 /Ni could maintain a degradation rate above 94.0% for florfenicol (FLO) when repeatedly used 50 times in water. We also found that the removal rate of FLO by 3D-MoS 2 /Ni was about 12 times higher than that of 3D-printed pure Ni (3D-Ni), attributed to the improved accessibility of H*. In addition, the electrochemical characterization results showed that the electrochemically active surface area of the 3D-MoS 2 /Ni electrode is about 3-fold higher than that of the 3D-Ni electrode while the electrical resistance is 4 times lower. Based on tert-butanol suppression, electron paramagnetic resonance and triple quadrupole mass spectrometer experiments, a "dual path" mechanism and possible degradation pathway for the dechlorination of FLO by 3D-MoS 2 /Ni were proposed. Furthermore, we also investigated the impacts of the cathode potential and the initial pH of the solution on the degradation of FLO. Background: The diagnosis of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is challenging in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected patients, due to the overlapping clinical manifestations and atypical imaging patterns compared to patients without HBV., Purpose: To investigate the preoperative imaging characteristics of iCCA in patients with HBV in comparison to those without HBV., Study Type: Retrospective., Subjects: 431 patients with histopathologically confirmed iCCA (143 HBV-positive and 288 HBV-negative patients) were retrospectively enrolled from three institutes, and patients were allocated to the training (n = 302) and validation (n = 129) cohorts from different institutes or time period; 100 matching HBV-positive hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients were also enrolled., Field Strength/sequence: 1.5-T and 3-T, including T1- and T2-weighted, diffusion-weighted and dynamic gadopentetate dimeglumine-enhanced imaging., Assessment: Clinical and MRI features were analyzed and compared between HBV-positive and HBV-negative patients with iCCA, and between HBV-positive patients with iCCA and HCC., Statistical Tests: Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses with odds ratio (OR) to identify independent features for discriminating HBV-associated iCCA. Diagnostic model generation by incorporating independent features, and the performance for discrimination was evaluated by receiver operating characteristics with the area under the curve (AUC) and 95% confidence interval (CI). AUCs were compared by the DeLong's method. A P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: Compared to patients without HBV, washout or degressive enhancement pattern (OR = 51.837), well-defined tumor margin (OR = 8.758) and no peritumoral bile duct dilation (OR = 4.651) were independent significant features for discriminating HBV-associated iCCAs. All these features were also the predominant MRI manifestations for HBV-associated HCC. The combined index showed an AUC of 0.798 (95% CI 0.748-0.842) in the training cohort and an AUC of 0.789 (95% CI 0.708-0.856) in the validation cohort for discrimination. Objectives: We conducted a systematic analysis of the notifiable rickettsial diseases in humans in China during 1950-2022., Methods: We utilized descriptive statistics to analyze the epidemiological characteristics, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic characteristics of typhus group rickettsiosis (TGR) and scrub typhus (ST) cases., Results: Since the 1950s, there have been variations in the incidence rate of TGR and ST in China, with a downtrend for TGR and an uptrend for ST. The South became a high-incidence area of TGR, whereas the North was previously the high-incidence area. ST cases were concentrated in the South and the geographic area of ST spread northward and westward. The seasonality of TGR and ST were similar in the South but distinct in the North. Most TGR and ST cases were reported by county-level medical institutions, whereas primary institutions reported the least. Delayed diagnosis was associated with fatal outcomes of TGR and ST. Objective: There is currently no non-invasive examination that can fully determine the diagnosis of osteomyelitis. SPECT/CT tomographic fusion imaging can provide both local metabolic activity and anatomical information to determine the condition and location. This study evaluates the diagnostic efficacy of 99m Tc-MDP SPECT/CT in bone infections, compared to MRI., Methods: In this multicenter retrospective study, 363 patients with suspected bone and joint infections or osteomyelitis were included. Participants underwent 99m Tc-MDP SPECT/CT and/or MRI examinations, supplemented by pathogenic bacterial cultures and histopathological analysis., Results: Only SPECT/CT was tested in 169 patients, and only MRI was used in 116. 78 people have implemented both inspections and have detailed information. The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of SPECT/CT for infection were 96% and 92% respectively, with an accuracy of 96%. For MRI, these figures were 88%, 84%, and 87% respectively., Conclusion: This represents the largest global study to date evaluating osteomyelitis and bone infection diagnosis using 99m Tc-MDP SPECT/CT tomographic fusion imaging. The findings indicate that 99m Tc-MDP SPECT/CT fusion imaging offers superior diagnostic accuracy compared to MRI. Osteoporotic fractures are the most severe complications of osteoporosis, characterized by poor bone quality, difficult realignment and fixation, slow fracture healing, and a high risk of recurrence. Clinically managing these fractures is relatively challenging, and in the context of rapid aging, they pose significant social hazards. The rapid advancement of disciplines such as biophysics and biochemistry brings new opportunities for future medical diagnosis and treatment. However, there has been limited attention to precision diagnosis and treatment strategies for osteoporotic fractures both domestically and internationally. In response to this, the Chinese Medical Association Orthopaedic Branch Youth Osteoporosis Group, Chinese Geriatrics Society Geriatric Orthopaedics Committee, Chinese Medical Doctor Association Orthopaedic Physicians Branch Youth Committee Osteoporosis Group, and Shanghai Association of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Osteoporosis Professional Committee have collaborated to develop this consensus. It aims to elucidate emerging technologies that may play a pivotal role in both diagnosis and treatment, advocating for clinicians to embrace interdisciplinary approaches and incorporate these new technologies into their practice. Ultimately, the goal is to improve the prognosis and quality of life for elderly patients with osteoporotic fractures.

Phytosterol organic acid esters are important food resources and the components of biomembrane structure. Due to the lack of extraction and synthesis techniques, more research has been focused on phytosterols, and the research on phytosterol acid esters have encountered a bottleneck, but phytosterol acid esters confer substantial benefits to human health. In this study, stigmasteryl vanillate (VAN), stigmasteryl protocatechuate (PRO) and stigmasteryl sinapate (SIN) were prepared through the Steglich reaction. The processes are promotable and the products reach up to 95% purity. In addition, their stability was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. HPLC analysis revealed an enhancement in water solubility after esterification with phenolic acid. In an in vitro digestion model, the bioaccessibility of stigmasteryl phenolates was significantly higher than that of stigmasterols (STIs). Regarding the anti-inflammatory properties, VAN, PRO, and SIN exhibit superior effects against TNF-α induced pro-inflammatory responses compared to STI. All stigmasteryl phenolates supplementation increased the ATP production, the basal, and maximal oxygen consumption rate in mitochondrial stress test. Overall, we present a synthesis method for stigmasteryl phenolates. It will contribute to the development and research of phytosterol acid ester analysis, functions and utilization in food. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), regulated by nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), is crucial for intestinal inflammation and barrier injury in the progression of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). The NF-κB pathway is inhibited by S-glutathionylation of inhibitory κB kinase β (IKKβ), which can be restored by glutaredoxin-1 (Grx1). Thus, we aim to explore the role of Grx1 in experimental NEC. Wild-type (WT) and Grx1-knockout (Grx1 -/- ) mice were treated with an NEC-inducing regimen. Primary intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) were subjected to LPS treatment. The production of iNOS, NO, and inflammation injuries were assessed. NF-κB and involved signaling pathways were also explored. The severity of NEC was attenuated in Grx1 -/- mice. Grx1 ablation promoted IKKβ glutathionylation, NF-κB inactivation, and decreased iNOS, NO, and O 2 ·- production in NEC mice. Furthermore, Grx1 ablation restrained proinflammatory cytokines and cell apoptosis, ameliorated intestinal barrier damage, and promoted proliferation in NEC mice. Grx1 ablation protected NEC through iNOS and NO inhibition, which related to S-glutathionylation of IKKβ to inhibit NF-κB signaling. The red imported fire ant ( Solenopsis invicta Buren) is one of the 100 worst invasive alien species in the world. At present, the control of red imported fire ants is still mainly based on chemical control, and the most commonly used is indoxacarb bait. In this study, the contact and feeding toxicity of 16 kinds of nanomaterials to workers, larvae, and reproductive ants were evaluated after 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h. The results showed that the mortality of diatomite, Silica (raspberry-shaped), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes among workers reached 98.67%, 97.33%, and 68%, respectively, after contact treatment of 72 h. The mortality of both larval and reproductive ants was less than 20% after 72 h of treatment. All mortality rates in the fed treatment group were below 20% after 72 h. Subsequently, we evaluated the digging, corpse-removal, and foraging behaviors of workers after feeding with diatomite, Silica (raspberry-shaped), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes for 24 h, which yielded inhibitory effects on the behavior of red imported fire ants. The most effective was diatomite, which dramatically decreased the number of workers that dug, extended the time needed for worker ant corpse removal and foraging activities, decreased the number of workers that foraged, and decreased the weight of the food carried by the workers. In addition, we also evaluated the contact and feeding toxicity of these three nanomaterials in combination with indoxacarb on red imported fire ants. According to contact toxicity, after 12 h of contact treatment, the death rate among the red imported fire ants exposed to the three materials combined with indoxacarb reached more than 97%. After 72 h of exposure treatment, the mortality rate of larvae was more than 73% when the nanomaterial content was above 1% and 83% when the diatomite content was 0.5%, which was significantly higher than the 50% recorded in the indoxacarb control group. After 72 h of feeding treatment, the mortality of diatomite, Silica (raspberry-shaped), and multi-walled carbon nanotubes combined with indoxacarb reached 92%, 87%, and 98%, respectively. The death rates of the three kinds of composite ants reached 97%, 67%, and 87%, respectively. The three kinds of composite food had significant inhibitory effects on the behavior of workers, and the trend was largely consistent with the effect of nanomaterials alone. This study provides technical support for the application of nanomaterials in red imported fire ant control.

Background: The spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among humans and food-producing animals has been widely reported. However, the transmission routes and associated risk factors remain incompletely understood., Methods: Here, we used commensal Escherichia coli bacteria strains from faeces of pigs and local citizens [HEG: high exposure group (pig breeders, butchers or restaurant chefs) and LEG: low exposure group (other occupations)] to explore the dynamics of ARB and ARG transmission between animals and humans., Results: Most ARGs (96%) present in pigs were shared with humans. Carriage rates of the shared ARGs suggest two transmission patterns among pigs, the HEG and LEG: one pattern was highest in pigs, gradually decreasing in the HEG and LEG (e.g. floR and cmlA1); the other pattern was increasing from pigs to the HEG but then decreasing in the LEG (e.g. mcr-1.1). Carriage rates of the HEG were higher than in the LEG in both patterns, implicating the HEG as a crucial medium in transmitting ARB and ARGs between food-producing animals and humans. Moreover, frequent inter/intragroup transmission via strains, plasmids and/or mobile elements was evident. Carriage of mcr-1.1 on human-gut-prevalent plasmids possibly promoted its enrichment in the HEG., Conclusions: The HEG is a crucial factor in transmitting ARB and ARGs between food-producing animals and humans. Objectives: To establish a non-invasive diagnostic system for intrahepatic mass-forming cholangiocarcinoma (IMCC) via decision tree analysis., Methods: Totally 1008 patients with 504 pathologically confirmed IMCCs and proportional hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) and combined hepatocellular cholangiocarcinomas (cHCC-CC) from multi-centers were retrospectively included (internal cohort n = 700, external cohort n = 308). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were applied to evaluate the independent clinical and MRI predictors for IMCC, and the selected features were used to develop a decision tree-based diagnostic system. Diagnostic efficacy of the established system was calculated by the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis in the internal training-testing and external validation cohorts, and also in small lesions  ≤ 3 cm., Results: Multivariate analysis revealed that female, no chronic liver disease or cirrhosis, elevated carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) level, normal alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level, lobulated tumor shape, progressive or persistent enhancement pattern, no enhancing tumor capsule, targetoid appearance, and liver surface retraction were independent characteristics favoring the diagnosis of IMCC over HCC or cHCC-CC (odds ratio = 3.273-25.00, p < 0.001 to p = 0.021). Among which enhancement pattern had the highest weight of 0.816. The diagnostic system incorporating significant characteristics above showed excellent performance in the internal training (area under the curve (AUC) 0.971), internal testing (AUC 0.956), and external validation (AUC 0.945) cohorts, as well as in small lesions  ≤ 3 cm (AUC 0.956)., Conclusions: In consideration of the great generalizability and clinical efficacy in multi-centers, the proposed diagnostic system may serve as a non-invasive, reliable, and easy-to-operate tool in IMCC diagnosis, providing an efficient approach to discriminate IMCC from other HCC-containing primary liver cancers., Clinical Relevance Statement: This study established a non-invasive, easy-to-operate, and explainable decision tree-based diagnostic system for intrahepatic mass-forming cholangiocarcinoma, which may provide essential information for clinical decision-making., Key Points: • Distinguishing intrahepatic mass-forming cholangiocarcinoma (IMCC) from other primary liver cancers is important for both treatment planning and outcome prediction. • The MRI-based diagnostic system showed great performance with satisfying generalization ability in the diagnosis and discrimination of IMCC. • The diagnostic system may serve as a non-invasive, easy-to-operate, and explainable tool in the diagnosis and risk stratification for IMCC., (© 2023. Background: Polysaccharide hydrogel is one of the most important materials for the colon target drug release system. However, the degradation time of polysaccharide hydrogel is much longer than the retention time in the colon. The drugs are expelled from the body before being released., Objective: In order to match the degradation of drug carriers and their retention time in the colon, a rapidly degradable konjac glucomannan (KGM) hydrogel was designed for colon target drug release., Methods: A crosslinker containing azo bond, olsalazine, was used to prepare the rapidly degradable KGM hydrogel. The degradation and drug release of the hydrogels with different crosslinking densities in the normal buffer and the human fecal medium were studied to evaluate the efficiency of colon drug release., Results: More than 50% of the KGM hydrogel by weight was degraded and more than 60% of the 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) was released within 48 h in 5% w/v human fecal medium., Conclusion: The drug was released more rapidly in a simulated colon environment than in a normal buffer. Furthermore, the drug release was controlled by the degradation of the hydrogel. The KGM hydrogel containing azo crosslinker has great potential for colon drug release.
