The contamination of crops by Cd is a worldwide problem that needs to be addressed for minimizing risk for human health. Today, numerous investigations have demonstrated that Si plays a role in reducing Cd toxicity and accumulation in cultivated plants. The evolution of scientific understanding - the Cd behavior in soil and in plant is discussed for the first time. Our analysis evidences that the research on Si-Cd interactions in the soil-plant system has quickened only in recent years, although basic interactions between silicic acid and Cd cations in aqueous systems were studied over 40-50 years ago. Today, numerous direct and indirect mechanisms of the Si impact on mobility and translocation of Cd in soil and in plants are reported. More productive studies in this area are those that considered the soil-plant system as a whole. Analysis of the development of the Cd-Si-related ideas suggests the prospects of further studies aimed at finding synergetic action of Si and other substances on Cd behavior in the soil-plant system., (© 2023. Clay minerals are intermediate products generated during soil development, and their neoformation and transformation are closely related to pedogenesis. Here we aimed at identifying the difference in the clay mineral composition of upland soils derived from different parent materials and different soil-forming environments and exploring the importance of clay mineral composition in pedogenesis and soil taxonomy. We sampled 60 soil B horizons in Hunan Province of subtropical China by digging soils derived from granite (GR), slate and shale (SS), Quaternary red clay (QRC), limestone (LS), and sandstone (SDS). The clay mineral composition and its correlation with parent materials, elevation, micro-topography, and pedogenic processes were investigated using X-ray diffraction and Pearson's correlation analysis. The clay mineral was dominated by kaolinite, followed by 2:1-type minerals (illite and vermiculite), and a small fraction of mixed-layer minerals. The composition of soil clay minerals varied with parent materials. Kaolinite was predominant in soils derived from GR and LS; mixed-layer minerals prevailed in QRC, whereas illite and vermiculite were prevalent in SDS. In addition, elevation and micro-climate could also explain the variations in clay mineral composition. Increase in elevation was associated with decreased 1:1 clay mineral content and increased 2:1 clay mineral content, especially in soils developed from LS. The composition and content of clay minerals indicated that Ferrosols, Ultisols, and Acrisols had undergone intense weathering; Primosols, Entisols, and Leptosols were characterised by weak weathering, and Plinthic Ali-Udic Cambosols, Plinthudults, and Plinthosols were characterised by strong redox status. This study suggests that clay mineral composition is related to the parent material, climate, and micro-topography, and that it can serve as an indicator of pedogenesis and soil type in subtropical China.

A number of remediation measures have been used in paddy fields to alleviate serious cadmium (Cd) contamination, which may pose a public health risk through the food chain. In this study, a field trial was conducted in paddy fields with slight-moderate Cd contamination to investigate the remediation effects of combined remediation measures (CRMs), including the use of Cd-safe rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars, water management modes (WMMs), lime application (LA), soil amendment application (SAA), and foliar silicon (Si) fertilizers. Two groups of field trials were designed including CRMs with selenium (Se) and without selenium (non-Se) application. The results show that soil measures (LA + SAA) can increase the soil pH by 0.99 and decrease the soil DTPA-extracted Cd content by 34.19% (p < 0.05). All measures used in the present study significantly decreased the Cd content in husked rice and yield, except for the WMMs; the CRMs achieved the best results, and Se application enhanced the effects of all measures. This study shows that CRMs significantly decreased the Cd content in husked rice by 58.10%; this value increased to 72.69% after Se application (p < 0.05). These results provide useful information for selecting remediation measures in paddy fields with slight-moderate Cd contamination.

Liming has been widely used to remediate Cd-contaminated acidic soils, but the effects of consecutive liming are still unclear. Four-year liming experiments were conducted to assess the remediation of Cd-contaminated acidic paddy fields in a double rice cropping system. With four-year consecutive liming (quicklime, 2.25 t ha -1 per season), the soil pH was increased by an average of 0.57 units (0.10-1.16 units), while the soil DTPA-Cd and available Fe and Mn were reduced by 9%, 19% and 31% (p < 0.05), respectively. The exchangeable plus water-soluble Cd fraction in soil was reduced by 17%, while the soil carbonate-, Fe/Mn oxide- and organic-bound Cd fractions were increased by 23%, 41% and 10% (p < 0.05), respectively. The Cd in rice grain was reduced by 55% for early rice and 63% for late rice (p < 0.05) and in some cases was reduced to below the Chinese allowable limit (0.2 mg kg -1 ). High annual fluctuations in rice grain Cd could be caused by variations in the field water regime and in rainfall. With consecutive liming, the soil pH, DTPA-Cd and rice grain Cd varied greatly in the first three seasons and then remained relatively less variable. Meanwhile, soil available nutrients (N, P and K) and rice grain yield were little affected by liming. Soil DTPA-Cd linearly decreased with increasing soil pH, while the reduction of Cd in rice grain logarithmically decreased with increasing soil pH and the reduction in soil DTPA-Cd in the heading stage, indicating potential implications for forecasting rice grain Cd content. Therefore, consecutive liming with quicklime can be recommended for the remediation of Cd-contaminated acidic paddy fields, though supplementary measures are still necessary., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. The efficiency of heavy metal (HM) phytoextraction from contaminated soil directly depends on the pollutant bioavailability, which can be increased by some soil amendments. In field test, the impacts of soil-applied ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and amorphous silicon dioxide (ASD) and foliar-applied monosilicic acid (MS) on cadmium (Cd) uptake by rice plants from contaminated paddy soil were investigated. Without EDTA, the solid or liquid Si materials reduced the Cd accumulation in the aboveground part of rice by 26 to 52%. If EDTA was applied, the Cd accumulation by plants was increased by 60 to 92%; however, the biomass was reduced by 16 to 35%. The combined application of Si-rich materials and EDTA provided enhanced plant tolerance to a negative influence of EDTA, while kept high Cd content in the rice stems and leaves. As a result, the Cd amounts extracted by the stems and leaves from the unit area of contaminated paddy soil were greater by 25 and 37% in comparison with those for only EDTA treatment.

Excess cadmium (Cd) in agricultural soils can be taken up by rice plants and concentrated in the grain, presenting a human health risk. In this study, we field tested the effects of three foliar treatments (zinc (Zn) alone, or combined with manganese (ZnMn) or phosphorus (ZnP)) on the Cd concentration and grain yield of six rice cultivars (C Liangyou 7, Fengyuanyou 272, Xiangwanxian 12, Tianyouhuazhan, Xiangwanxian 13, and Jinyou 284) at the grain filling stage. Our results showed that rice yield and Cd, Zn, Mn, P, and K concentrations were significantly different among the cultivars (p < 0.05); for example, Jinyou 284 recorded lower Cd levels than any other cultivar. Application of Zn, ZnMn, and ZnP had no significant effect on rice yield and Mn, P, and K concentrations for all cultivars. Compared with the control, Cd concentrations after treatment with Zn, ZnMn, and ZnP decreased by 19.03-32.55%, 36.63-55.78% (p < 0.05), and 25.72-49.10%, respectively, while Zn concentrations increased by 11.02-29.38%, 10.63-32.67%, and 11.97-36.82%, respectively. There was a significant negative correlation between Cd and Zn concentrations (p < 0.01). All three treatments increased Zn and reduced Cd concentration in rice grains, though ZnMn was most effective. Therefore, cultivar selection and Zn fertilizer application are effective strategies to minimize Cd concentration in rice grains. However, the lowest result still exceeded the Chinese Cd safety limit (0.2 mg Cd kg -1 ) by a factor of 2.6, demonstrating that additional effective measures should be simultaneously used to further reduce the accumulation of Cd in rice grains.

Bacteria, as the key component of soil ecosystems, participate in nutrient cycling and organic matter decomposition. However, how fertilization regime affects the rhizospheric bacterial community of reddish paddy soil remains unclear. Here, a long-term fertilization experiment initiated in 1982 was employed to explore the impacts of different fertilization regimes on physicochemical properties and bacterial communities of reddish paddy rhizospheric soil in Central South China by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene. The results showed that long-term fertilization improved the soil nutrient status and shaped the distinct rhizospheric bacterial communities. Particularly, chemical NPK fertilizers application significantly declined the richness of the bacterial community by 7.32%, whereas the application of manure alone or combined with chemical NPK fertilizers significantly increased the biodiversity of the bacterial community by 1.45%, 1.87% compared with no fertilization, respectively. Moreover, LEfSe indicated that application of chemical NPK fertilizers significantly enhanced the abundances of Verrucomicrobia and Nitrospiraceae, while manure significantly increased the abundances of Deltaproteobacteria and Myxococcales, but the most abundant Actinobacteria and Planctomycetes were detected in the treatment that combined application of manure and chemical NPK fertilizers. Furthermore, canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and the Mantel test clarified that exchangeable Mg 2+ (E-Mg 2+ ), soil organic carbon (SOC) and alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen (AN) are the key driving factors for shaping bacterial communities in the rhizosphere. Our results suggested that long-term balanced using of manure and chemical fertilizers not only increased organic material pools and nutrient availability but also enhanced the biodiversity of the rhizospheric bacterial community and the abundance of Actinobacteria, which contribute to the sustainable development of agro-ecosystems.

Soil from an experimental paddy field in southern China was incubated with peanut shell biochar to investigate effects of this additive on the adsorption and desorption characteristics of Cd(II) using batch methods. Incorporation of biochar increased adsorption of Cd(II) by the paddy soil at 20, 25, and 30°C; this trend was apparent both with increasing quantities of biochar and rising temperature. Incorporation of biochar primarily enhanced the non-electrostatic adsorption of Cd(II). In addition, supplementation with biochar decreased the adsorption rate of Cd(II), which decreased with increasing quantities of biochar. The Langmuir constant b and Freundlich constant k f both increased with greater quantities of biochar at different temperatures. Adsorption of Cd(II) was an endothermic process and occurred spontaneously. Incorporation of biochar decreased availability and mobility of Cd(II) to plants primarily through increased non-electrostatic adsorption of Cd(II) by paddy soil.

Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of three types of coated urea on the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown in contaminated soil. Pot-culture experiments were conducted in a greenhouse from July to November 2012 on the rice cultivar "Hua Hang Si Miao" in Guangzhou (China). The experimental design was completely randomized with four treatments and three replications. The treatments were control (CK) (N 0 mg/kg), prilled urea (PU) (N 200 mg/kg), polymer-coated urea (PCU) (N 200 mg/kg), and sulfur-coated urea (SCU) (N 200 mg/kg). Our results indicated that applications of PCU and SCU slightly increased the dry weight of rice grains. The application of SCU significantly decreased the CaCl2 and toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP)-extractable Cd concentrations by 15.4 and 56.1%, respectively. Sequential extractions showed that PCU and SCU applications led to a significant decrease in Cd in the exchangeable fraction and an increase in the bound iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) oxides fractions. Cd concentrations in grains treated with PCU were reduced by 11.7%, whereas SCU significantly reduced Cd concentrations by 29.1%. SCU reduced Cd transfer from the straws to the grain. Our results demonstrated that PCU and SCU may be effective in mitigating Cd accumulation in rice grown in acidic Cd-contaminated soil, especially in plants receiving SCU.

Microorganisms dominated speciation of arsenic (As) play an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of As. In the study, species transformation of arsenite [As(III)] and As(III) influx and efflux across the cell membranes of Trichoderma asperellum SM-12F1, Penicillium janthinellum SM-12F4, and Fusarium oxysporum CZ-8F1 cells were studied using a cellular lysis plus chromatographic separation method and further the in-situ X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis. The results indicated that As(III) can enter into fungal cells and that a portion of the As(III) can be exuded out of cells. For both As sequestrated into fungal cytoplasm and As adsorbtion onto cell walls, As(III) was found to be the dominated form of As. XANES analysis showed that As(III) accounted for 58.4%, 59.5%, and 73.0% of the total As in the cells of T. asperellum SM-12F1, P. janthinellum SM-12F4, and F. oxysporum CZ-8F1, respectively. Among these fungal strains, however, there were obvious differences in the relative proportions of arsenate [As(V)], monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA). For T. asperellum SM-12F1, the proportion (%) of MMA was 31.1%, and no As(V) or DMA was detected. For F. oxysporum CZ-8F1, the proportions of As(V) and MMA were 15.8% and 8.8%, respectively, but no DMA was observed. As(V), MMA, and DMA accounted for 4.2%, 29.5%, and 8.1%, respectively, of the P. janthinellum SM-12F4 cells. A field experiment was conducted on two soil types in the Changsha suburb of Hunan Province to study the effects of hydroquinone (HQ), dicyandiamide (DCD) and thiourea (TU) on the nitrate content in soil and pakchoi and on the yield of pakchoi. The results showed that all the test nitrification inhibitors could significantly decrease the nitrate content in soil and pakchoi during whole growth stage, among which, DCD had the best effect, but the effect was differed on different soil types. Nitrification inhibitors could increase pakchoi yield, DCD was also the best one, and the effect was significantly better on vegetable garden red soil than on vegetable garden alluvial soil. The nitrate content in soil and pakchoi was the highest about 40 days after pakchoi transplanting.

Through adsorption-desorption experiment and incubation test, this paper studied the phosphate adsorption and desorption characteristics of several fly ashes. The test fly ashes contained 0.545 - 4.540 g x kg(-1) of total P and 19.55 - 163.0 mg x kg(-1) of available P, which were significantly higher than those in soils. The P adsorption capacity of fly ashes increased with increasing added P, while their P adsorption rate was in adverse. Fly ashes had a higher P adsorption rate but a lower P desorption rate than soils, mainly because fly ashes had more P adsorption sites and stronger bound energy. In this study, Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin equations were fit to the measured data, and the MBC value in Langmuir equation, a value in Freundlich equation, and k2 value in Temkin equation could be used as a comprehensive index to characterize the potential phosphate adsorptivity of fly ashes. The larger these values were, the stronger the P adsorptivity was. The MBC, a and k2 value of 5 fly ashes collected from different locations was in order of Xiangtan power factory (5 167.7, 4 056.2 and 831.5) > Yueyang paper factory (1 650.7, 2803.4 and 711.9) >Huaneng power factory (303.0, 1677.6 and 368.7) > Zhuzhou power factory (34.7,413.48 and 213.8) > Dongting nitrogen fertilizer factory (34.7, 413.48 and 213.8). The P fixation by fly ashes generally increased with their increasing water content, and their phosphate adsorption was mainly specific adsorption and chemical precipitation, suggesting that the P fixation and the water content of fly ashes should be considered when fly ash was used as soil amendment or as compound fertilizer filling substance.

Three paddy soils with higher content of fixed ammonium in Hunan Province were used as test soils in pot experiment to study the seasonal variation of their fixed ammonium content and its bioavailability during rice growth period. The results showed that the fixed ammonium content in the paddy soils changed constantly during rice growth. Applying N fertilizer and organic manure increased the fixed ammonium content, which was decreased through the N uptake by rice plants. The recently fixed ammonium was almost fully available to rice, while the native fixed ammonium was partly available. The release of fixed ammonium during rice growth was newly alluvial sandy soil > purple clayey soil > alluvial sandy soil, and was greater a early growth stage than at later growth stage.

By the method of Silva and Bremner, the fixed ammonium content of chief paddy soil types in Hunan Province and its influencing factors were studied. The results showed that the content of fixed ammonium in plough layer ranged from 141 mg.kg-1 to 353 mg.kg-1, averaged 272 +/- 67 mg.kg-1, and accounted for 11.2% of total soil N. The content of fixed ammonium was in order of alluvial sandy soil > purple clayey soil > newly alluvial sandy soil > yellow clayey soil > reddish yellow clayey soil. There were four distribution models of fixed ammonium in the soil profiles: 1) fixed ammonium content increased with the increase of depth in the profiles; 2) fixed ammonium content decreased with the increase of depth; 3) there was no distinct change; and 4) abrupt increase or decrease was found in the profiles. The percentage of fixed ammonium to total N in soils always increased with the increase of depth. The fixation of NH4+ by soil was the strongest under 30 degrees C. Long-term submergence benefited to the fixation of NH4+ in newly alluvial sandy soil, purple clayey soil, and alluvial sandy soil, while the alternation of drying and wetting contributed to the fixation of NH4+ in yellow clayey soil best. The content of fixed ammonium in tested soil was correlated with the content of clay < 0.01 mm at the significant level, and not correlated with the content of clay < 0.001 mm, total N, organic N, and matter.
