The discharge of oily wastewater not only pollutes waters but also deteriorates our living environment. Superhydrophobic cotton fabric is considered as an important remedy material for oily wastewater cleanup due to outstanding advantages including low cost, high porosity and switchable wettability. However, the existing superhydrophobic fabrics cannot exhibit durable superhydrophobicity during real-life applications due to poor interaction between the coatings and fabric substrates. To address this issue, one-step strategy is proposed to fabricate superhydrophobic cotton fabric by immersion in a octa-[2-(carboxyl methyl thio) ethyl]-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane/cerium dioxide/polydimethylsiloxane (POSS/CeO 2 /PDMS) coating. As expected, the finished cotton fabric exhibits robust superhydrophobic resistance to mechanical abrasion and chemical corrosions. Notably, the finished cotton fabric shows thermal self-healing superhydrophobicity even if undergone repetitive abrasion cycles and air plasma etching. It is proposed that the rising temperature accelerates the rotations of PDMS chains and the migrations of MAPOSS and CeO 2 , contributing superhydrophobic self-healing of the damaged cotton fabric. Meanwhile, the superhydrophobic fabric displays high oil/water separation efficiency even in strong acid and alkali environments. Additionally, the POSS/CeO 2 /PDMS coating improves mechanical, thermal and UV-blocking properties of the finished cotton fabric. The microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process, enhanced with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO 3 ), offers a sustainable alternative for wastewater treatment aiming for carbon neutrality. This study demonstrates that NaHCO 3 , which can be derived from the flue gases and alkaline textile wastewater, significantly enhances pollutant removal and biomass production. Optimal addition of NaHCO 3 was found to achieve an inorganic-to-organic carbon ratio of 1.0 and a total carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of 5.0. Metagenomic analysis and structural equation modeling showed that NaHCO 3 addition increased dissolved oxygen concentrations and pH levels, creating a more favorable environment for key microbial communities, including Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Cyanobacteria. Confocal laser scanning microscopy further confirmed enhanced interactions between Cyanobacteria and Proteobacteria/Chloroflexi, facilitating the MBGS process. These microbes harbored functional genes (gap2, GLU, and ppk) critical for removing organics, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Carbon footprint analysis revealed significant reductions in CO 2 emissions by the NaHCO 3 -added MBGS process in representative countries (China, Australia, Canada, Germany, and Morocco), compared to the conventional activated sludge process. Background: The associations between authoritarian personality and subjective well-being remains understudied, especially in China. In addition, as Chinese individuals and Chinese organizations generally attach importance to authority, exploring the matching effect of individual authoritarian personality and organizational culture (OC) can provide information for career selection, talent recruitment and university enrollment. The present study aimed to test associations between authoritarian personality traits (right-wing authoritarian, RWA; social dominance orientation, SDO) and subjective well-being (SWB; including positive affect, PA; negative affect, NA; and life satisfaction, LS) at the general and component-specific levels and the possible moderating role of OC (military or nonmilitary universities) on the associations in Chinese culture for the first time., Methods: A total of 6,580 Chinese students from military and nonmilitary universities were surveyed using the Right Wing Authoritarianism Scale, Social Dominance Orientation Scale, Campbell Index of Well-being, Patient Health Questionnaire, and Satisfaction with Life Scale., Results: A higher score on RWA, but lower on SDO, correlated with greater SWB at both the general level and the component-specific levels. The links of RWA/SDO and positive factors (PA/LS) of SWB as well as latent SWB were moderated by the OC (being in military or nonmilitary universities). Specifically, these correlations were stronger for military than for civilian students. Subjective well-being is a key concept in positive psychology and is associated with a variety of physical and mental health outcomes. Physical activity (PA) is a modifiable health behavior that has been identified as a potential correlate of subjective well-being. However, the underlying mechanisms that connect PA to subjective well-being are not well-understood. This study aimed to examine the association between the PA and various components of subjective well-being in college students, and to determine if social support mediated this association. A total of 1158 college students (46.3% female, mean age = 19.75 years) voluntarily completed a set of questionnaires measuring PA, life satisfaction, positive affect, negative affect, and social support in a single-wave assessment. Three sets of mediation analyses were conducted (employing bootstrapping techniques with 10,000 samples), with life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect serving as the dependent variables, PA as the independent variable, and social support as the mediator. The findings revealed that the relationships between PA, subjective well-being, and social support differ by the component of subjective well-being. While no association was detected between PA and negative affect, increased PA led to enhanced social support, which in turn contributed to higher levels of life satisfaction and positive affect. Context: Recent studies suggest that light-intensity physical activity may enhance cardiometabolic health and reduce mortality risk in adults. However, more information is required to understand the patterns of light-intensity physical activity and postprandial cardiometabolic health., Objective: This study examined the effects of different light-intensity walking patterns on postprandial cardiometabolic responses in young obese adults., Design: A randomized crossover trial was conducted., Setting: The study was conducted in the laboratory., Participants: The study analyzed baseline (fasting) and 6-hour postprandial concentrations of glucose, insulin, triglycerides, and blood pressure (BP) in 16 young obese adults., Interventions: Participants underwent four 7-hour experimental conditions with a 7-20-day washout period: uninterrupted sitting (SIT), 30-minute light-intensity walking (EX+SIT), 3-minute light-intensity walking every 30 minutes (BR), and 30-minute light-intensity walking with 3-minute light-intensity walking every 30 minutes (EX+BR)., Main Outcome Measures: Incremental areas under the curve (iAUC) for each outcome and average BP were compared between SIT and walking conditions., Results: Compared with SIT, all walking conditions reduced iAUCs for glucose and average diastolic BP (all p<0.05). Only EX+SIT and EX+BR reduced iAUCs for insulin (p<0.05). No significant differences were found for triglycerides iAUC and systolic BP between the four conditions (all p>0.05)., Conclusions: All patterns of light-intensity walking reduced postprandial glucose concentrations and diastolic BP in young obese adults, suggesting benefits for glycemic control. Accumulating evidence suggests that exposure to ambient airborne PM2.5 increases the risk of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI). However, whether ferroptosis, a newly discovered type of cell death involved in PM2.5-induced lung injury and fibrosis, is involved in PM2.5-induced POI has not been determined. This study aimed to verify the involvement of PM2.5-induced ferroptosis in ovarian dysfunction and further demonstrate that melatonin inhibits ferroptosis by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway to ameliorate POI in vivo and in vitro. In our study, PM2.5 promoted iron accumulation and induced lipid peroxidation, thus contributing to ferroptosis in KGN cells and ovaries. However, these effects were eliminated and enhanced in Nrf2-overexpressing and Nrf2-knockdown cells, respectively. In addition, melatonin and ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) inhibited ferroptosis by activating the NRF2 signaling pathway, as evidenced by the silencing of Nrf2 in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistically, Nrf2-knockout mice were more susceptible to ferroptosis and PM2.5-induced POI than control mice. Moreover, melatonin suppressed changes in morphological and biochemical indicators related to ferroptosis, such as MDA and GSH depletion and GPX4 and XCT downregulation, by enhancing Nrf2 signaling. Here, we first reported that PM2.5 triggered ferroptosis by increasing ROS levels, lipid peroxidation and glutathione depletion. To investigate the mechanism and influence of applying gamma-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) on soil water infiltration, laboratory experiments and numerical simulations were conducted using Hydrus-1D. These studies assessed the impact of various application rates of γ-PGA on soil water characteristic parameters. Orthogonal simulation experiments on soil bulk density, γ-PGA application rates, and burial depths were performed utilizing predefined soil water characteristic values (twelve groups: nine groups of numerical simulation experiments and three groups of laboratory verification tests), and the soil infiltration characteristics were analyzed. Concurrently, an empirical model was developed to elucidate the relationships between the empirical model parameters and influencing factors, as well as to examine the sensitivity of these factors to changes in soil infiltration rate. The relationship between cumulative infiltration and the distance of wetting front movement, based on the water balance equation, was refined. The results indicated that γ-PGA significantly affected soil water characteristic parameters, where the saturated water content and the reciprocal of soil intake suction increased with rising γ-PGA applications ( p < 0.01), while the saturated hydraulic conductivity and the parameter n decreased ( p < 0.01), with no notable changes in the retained water content ( p > 0.05). The trend in cumulative infiltration influenced by various factors could be modeled by a capacitive charging model function, which yielded a superior fit. A negative correlation existed between the sensitivity index and all the influencing factors ( p < 0.05), with the order of influence being soil bulk density, γ-PGA application rate, and γ-PGA burial depth, respectively. Utilizing the modified water balance equation, the ratio of cumulative infiltration to wetting front migration distance corresponded more closely with a power function. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for further studies on the effects of γ-PGA on crop growth characteristics in fields and the optimization of γ-PGA technical element combinations.

Background: Influenza outbreaks have occurred frequently these years, especially in the summer of 2022 when the number of influenza cases in southern provinces of China increased abnormally. However, the exact evidence of the driving factors involved in the prodrome period is unclear, posing great difficulties for early and accurate prediction in practical work., Methods: In order to avoid the serious interference of strict prevention and control measures on the analysis of influenza influencing factors during the COVID-19 epidemic period, only the impact of meteorological and air quality factors on influenza A (H3N2) in Xiamen during the non coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) period (2013/01/01-202/01/24) was analyzed using the distribution lag non-linear model. Phylogenetic analysis of influenza A (H3N2) during 2013-2022 was also performed. Influenza A (H3N2) was predicted through a random forest and long short-term memory (RF-LSTM) model via actual and forecasted meteorological and influenza A (H3N2) values., Results: Twenty nine thousand four hundred thirty five influenza cases were reported in 2022, accounting for 58.54% of the total cases during 2013-2022. A (H3N2) dominated the 2022 summer epidemic season, accounting for 95.60%. The influenza cases in the summer of 2022 accounted for 83.72% of the year and 49.02% of all influenza reported from 2013 to 2022. Among them, the A (H3N2) cases in the summer of 2022 accounted for 83.90% of all A (H3N2) reported from 2013 to 2022. Daily precipitation(20-50 mm), relative humidity (70-78%), low (≤ 3 h) and high (≥ 7 h) sunshine duration, air temperature (≤ 21 °C) and O 3 concentration (≤ 30 µg/m 3 , > 85 µg/m 3 ) had significant cumulative effects on influenza A (H3N2) during the non-COVID-19 period. The daily values of PRE, RHU, SSD, and TEM in the prodrome period of the abnormal influenza A (H3N2) epidemic (19-22 weeks) in the summer of 2022 were significantly different from the average values of the same period from 2013 to 2019 (P < 0.05). The minimum RHU value was 70.5%, the lowest TEM value was 16.0 °C, and there was no sunlight exposure for 9 consecutive days. The highest O 3 concentration reached 164 µg/m 3 . The range of these factors were consistent with the risk factor range of A (H3N2). The common influenza A (H3N2) variant genotype in 2022 was 3 C.2a1b.2a.1a. It was more accurate to predict influenza A (H3N2) with meteorological forecast values than with actual values only., Conclusion: The extreme weather conditions of sustained low temperature and wet rain may have been important driving factors for the abnormal influenza A (H3N2) epidemic. A low vaccination rate, new mutated strains, and insufficient immune barriers formed by natural infections may have exacerbated this epidemic. Meteorological forecast values can aid in the early prediction of influenza outbreaks. Objectives: Using a sporadic case of listeriosis suspected to have been caused by consuming a pre-packaged cold-chain ready-to-eat (RTE) food in Beijing, China in 2021 as an exemplar, this study demonstrated the importance of thoroughly investigating the source of listeriosis up to the production point for mitigating infection risk during routine monitoring of Listeria in food facilities and national surveillance program using whole-genome sequencing (WGS)., Methods: Epidemiological, laboratory, traceback, and plant investigations were used to identify the source of infection., Results: WGS showed the isolate from the patient was genetically indistinguishable from that of the implicated food. During a plant investigation, L. monocytogenes was detected in 26% (9/35) of the environmental samples and one of two raw material samples, confirming the source., Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first investigation in China linking a case of L. monocytogenes infection to a suspected food and its production environment. This report highlights the risk of L. monocytogenes contamination of RTE food and demonstrates the role of food safety risk monitoring in identifying potential sources of infection. Calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) play crucial roles in sperm motility and fertilization. The copine (CPNE) family comprises several Ca 2+ -dependent phospholipid-binding proteins. Of these, CPNE1 is extensively expressed in mammalian tissues; however, its precise role in testicular development and spermatogenesis is yet to be fully characterized. In this study, we used proteomics to analyze testicular biopsies and found that levels of CPNE1 were significantly reduced in patients with non-obstructive azoospermia (defective spermatogenesis) compared to those in patients with obstructive azoospermia (physiological spermatogenesis). In mice, CPNE1 is expressed at various stages of germ cell development and is associated with the Golgi apparatus. Ultimately, CPNE1 is expressed in the flagella of mature sperms. To further examine the role of CPNE1, we developed a Cpne1 knockout mouse model. Analysis showed that the loss of Cpne1 did not impair testicular development, spermatogenesis, or sperm morphology and motility in physiological conditions. When treated with gadolinium (III) chloride or 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate, known inhibitors of store-operated Ca 2+ entry, Ca 2+ signals and sperm motility were significantly compromised in wild-type mice; however, both mechanisms were conserved in KO mice. These results suggested that CPNE1 is dispensable for testicular development, spermatogenesis or sperm motility in physiological conditions. In addition, CPNE1 may represent a target of Ca 2+ channel inhibitors and may therefore be implicated in the regulation of Ca 2+ signaling and sperm motility.

Although pre-treatment assessments of the capacity for the psychotherapy process can aid in identifying patients experiencing great difficulties in therapy and in tailoring therapies for individual patients, limited information exists for adolescents. To address this gap, this study followed the World Health Organization's age standards for adolescents (younger adolescents aged 10-14 years; older adolescents aged 15-19 years), examined the psychometric properties of the Capacity for Psychotherapy Process Scale (CFPPS; mainly used for adult patients) in these two groups of adolescents, and compared their capacities for the psychotherapy process. The participants were 434 younger adolescent (mean age = 13.00 ± 1.08 years; 70.0% female) and 883 older adolescent outpatients (mean age = 16.68 ± 1.29 years; 62.3% female) at the department of psychiatry of the hospital in Guangzhou, China. The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses validated the 5-factor model (motivation, belief, self-revelation, persistence, and insight) in both groups. The scale also demonstrated good internal consistency. Furthermore, the CFPPS exhibited small or no associations with pre-treatment sleep problems, depression symptoms, or anxiety symptoms but was a significant predictor of working alliance and psychological benefit in therapy. The capacity for the psychotherapy process among younger adolescents was lower than that among older adolescents. The CFPPS appears to be a reliable and validated instrument for measuring the capacity for the psychotherapy process among adolescent outpatients in China. Therapists should provide therapy tailored to the Chinese adolescents' capacity. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is prevalent among males experiencing fertility challenges, yet attitudes towards actively treating ED in this group are under-researched. From a cohort of 1256 men with reproductive needs, 303 were identified with ED. The survey encompassed 296 respondents who correctly completed the second questionnaire, revealing that 50.3% sought ED treatment, with higher ED severity increasing the likelihood of seeking treatment. Infertile men were more likely to seek treatment than those with pregnancy loss (OR 3.18, 95% CI 1.74-5.83). Men with normal semen parameters were more open to ED therapy (OR 3.02, 95% CI 1.69-5.36), whereas those undergoing Assisted Reproduction Treatment were less inclined (OR 0.32, 95% CI 0.18-0.58). PDE-5 inhibitors (PDE-5Is) were preferred by 51.0% of those seeking treatment, with 29.7% of men with pregnancy loss and 60.1% of infertile men choosing PDE-5Is as their first option. Concerns included potential adverse effects of PDE-5Is on fetal health (78.7% of men with pregnancy loss) and on sperm quality (44.2% of infertile men). Anaerobic digestion is an indispensable technical option towards green and low-carbon wastewater treatment, with interspecies electron transfer (IET) playing a key role in its efficiency and operational stability. The exogenous semiconductive iron oxides have been proven to effectively enhance IET, while the cognition of the physicochemical-biochemical coupling stimulatory mechanism was circumscribed and remains to be elucidated. In this study, semiconductive iron oxides, α-Fe 2 O 3 , γ-Fe 2 O 3 , α-FeOOH, and γ-FeOOH were found to significantly enhance syntrophic methanogenesis by 76.39, 72.40, 37.33, and 32.64% through redirecting the dominant IET pathway from classical interspecies hydrogen transfer to robust direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). Their alternative roles as electron shuttles potentially substituting for c-type cytochromes were conjectured to establish an electron transport matrix associated with conductive pili. Distinguished from the conventional electron conductor mechanism of conductive Fe 3 O 4 , semiconductive iron oxides facilitated DIET intrinsically through the capacitive Fe(III/II) redox cycles coupled with secondary mineralization. The growth of Aminobacterium, Sedimentibacter, and Methanothrix was enriched and the gene copy numbers of Geobacteraceae 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid were selectively flourished by 2.0-∼4.5- fold to establish a favorable microflora for DIET pathway. Metabolic pathways of syntrophic acetogenesis from propionate/butyrate and CO 2 reduction methanogenesis were correspondingly promoted. Background: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the synergistic impact of time-restricted feeding (TRF) combined with resistance training (RT) (TRF + RT) on body composition and metabolic health in adults, contrasting it with habitual eating patterns (CON) and RT (CON + RT)., Methods: Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, five databases were searched up to 28 April 2024. Randomized controlled trials or crossover trials assessing the effects of TRF + RT for at least 4 weeks in adults were selected. Data were pooled as standardized mean differences (SMDs) or weighted mean differences (WMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The risk of bias was evaluated using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool., Results: Seven studies with 164 participants were included in the final analysis. TRF + RT significantly reduced body mass (WMD -2.90, 95% CI: -5.30 to -0.51), fat mass (WMD -1.52, 95% CI: -2.30 to -0.75), insulin (SMD -0.72, 95% CI: -1.24 to -0.21), total cholesterol (WMD -9.44, 95% CI: -13.62 to -5.27), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (WMD -9.94, 95% CI: -13.47 to -6.41), and energy intake (WMD -174.88, 95% CI: -283.79 to -65.97) compared to CON + RT. No significant changes were observed in muscle mass, strength, or other metabolic markers., Conclusions: TRF + RT, in contrast to CON + RT, significantly improved body composition, insulin, and cholesterol levels without affecting muscle mass or strength.

Weizmannia coagulans has attracted attention due to its remarkable health benefits for human, but the dynamic changes of its viable bacteria during thermal processing have been less reported. In this study, a predictive model for the survival of Weissmanella coagulans during thermal processing of food was developed and validated during the processing of coffee, tea, instant noodles, calcium milk biscuits, muffin cake and steamed buns. The kinetics of heat inactivation activities of Weizmannia coagulans VHProbi C08 and Weizmannia coagulans GBI-30, 6086 at 85, 95, 105, 110 and 115 °C were investigated, and their coefficients of determination were greater than 0.91 and 0.87, and the root-mean-square errors were less than 0.64 and 0.43, respectively. The z-values of VHProbi C08 and GBI-30, 6086 were obtained by Bigelow model fitting as 36.1 °C and 36.9 °C, respectively. The developed prediction model was applied to the thermal processing of six food products and the measured values were all within ±0.5 Log 10 (CFU/mL) of the predicted values, indicating high prediction accuracy. The model predicts the survival of Weissmanella coagulans simply by obtaining the initial number of viable bacteria and the change in temperature. Various diseases caused by harmful microorganisms and viruses have caused serious harm and huge economic losses to society. Thus, rapid detection of harmful microorganisms and viruses is necessary for disease prevention and treatment. Nanomaterials have unique properties that other materials do not possess, such as a small size effect and quantum size effect. Introducing nanomaterials into biosensors improves the performance of biosensors for faster and more accurate detection of microorganisms and viruses. This review aims to introduce the different kinds of biosensors and the latest advances in the application of nanomaterials in biosensors. In particular, this review focuses on describing the physicochemical properties of zero-, one-, two-, and three-dimensional nanostructures as well as nanoenzymes. Finally, this review discusses the applications of nanobiosensors in the detection of microorganisms and viruses and the future directions of nanobiosensors.

Introduction: Previous studies have demonstrated that Dual-specificity phosphatase 4 (DUSP4) plays an important role in the progression of different tumor types. However, the role and mechanism of DUSP4 in colorectal cancer (CRC) remain unclear., Aims: We investigate the role and mechanisms of DUSP4 in CRC., Methods: Immunohistochemistry was used to investigate DUSP4 expression in CRC tissues. Cell proliferation, apoptosis and migration assays were used to validate DUSP4 function in vitro and in vivo. RNA-sequence assay was used to identify the target genes of DUSP4. Human phosphokinase array and inhibitor assays were used to explore the downstream signaling of DUSP4., Results: DUSP4 expression was upregulated in CRC tissues relative to normal colorectal tissues, and DUSP4 expression showed a significant positive correlation with CRC stage. Consistently, we found that DUSP4 was highly expressed in colorectal cancer cells compared to normal cells. DUSP4 knockdown inhibits CRC cell proliferation, migration and promotes apoptosis. Furthermore, the ectopic expression of DUSP4 enhanced CRC cell proliferation, migration and diminished apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. Human phosphokinase array data showed that ectopic expression of DUSP4 promotes CREB activation. RNA-sequencing data showed that PRKACB acts as a downstream target gene of DUSP4/CREB and enhances CREB activation through PKA/cAMP signaling. In addition, xenograft model results demonstrated that DUSP4 promotes colorectal tumor progression via PRKACB/CREB activation in vivo., Conclusion: These findings suggest that DUSP4 promotes CRC progression. Silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) have attracted considerable attention in many advanced applications due to silicon's high natural abundance, low toxicity, and impressive optical properties. However, little attention has been paid to fluorescence anti-counterfeiting applications based on lipophilic silicon nanocrystals. Moreover, it is also a challenge to fabricate aging-resistant anti-counterfeiting coatings based on silicon nanocrystals. Herein, this paper presents a demonstration of aging-resistant fluorescent anti-counterfeiting coatings based on red fluorescent silicon nanocrystals. In this work, lipophilic silicon nanocrystals (De-SiNCs) with red fluorescence were prepared first by thermal hydrosilylation between hydrogen-terminated silicon nanocrystals (H-SiNCs) and 1-decene. Subsequently, a new SiNCs/PDMS coating (De-SiNCs/DV) was fabricated by dispersing De-SiNCs into reinforcing PDMS composites with vinyl-capped silicone resin. Interestingly, the De-SiNCs/DV composites exhibit superior transparency (up to 85%) in the visible light range, outstanding fluorescence stabilities with an average lifetime of 20.59 μs under various conditions including acidic/alkaline environments, different organic solvents, high-humidity environments and UV irradiation. Meanwhile, the encapsulation of De-SiNCs is beneficial to enhancing the mechanical properties and thermal stability of De-SiNCs/DV composites. Additionally, the De-SiNCs/DV coating exhibits an excellent anti-counterfeiting effect on cotton fabrics when used as an ink in screen-printing. These findings pave the way for developing innovative flexible multifunctional anti-counterfeiting coatings in the future.

The development of pig skeletal muscle is a complex dynamic regulation process, which mainly includes the formation of primary and secondary muscle fibers, the remodeling of muscle fibers, and the maturation of skeletal muscle; However, the regulatory mechanism of the entire developmental process remains unclear. This study analyzed the whole-transcriptome data of skeletal muscles at 27 developmental nodes (E33-D180) in Landrace pigs, and their key regulatory factors in the development process were identified using the bioinformatics method. Firstly, we constructed a transcriptome expression map of skeletal muscle development from embryo to adulthood in Landrace pig. Subsequently, due to drastic change in gene expression, the perinatal periods including E105, D0 and D9, were focused, and the genes related to the process of muscle fiber remodeling and volume expansion were revealed. Then, though conjoint analysis with miRNA and lncRNA transcripts, a ceRNA network were identified, which consist of 11 key regulatory genes (such as CHAC1, RTN4IP1 and SESN1), 7 miRNAs and 43 lncRNAs, and they potentially play an important role in the process of muscle fiber differentiation, muscle fiber remodeling and volume expansion, intramuscular fat deposition, and other skeletal muscle developmental events. In summary, we reveal candidate genes and underlying molecular regulatory networks associated with perinatal skeletal muscle fiber type remodeling and expansion. Background: Quality assessment of modified or processed red blood cell (RBC) components, such as pathogen-reduced RBCs, using only in vitro testing may not always be predictive of in vivo performance. Mouse or rat in vivo models are limited by a lack of applicability to certain aspects of human RBC biology. Here, we used a guinea pig model to study the effects of riboflavin combined with UV light on the integrity of RBCs in vitro and following transfusion in vivo., Materials and Methods: Guinea pig RBCs were collected from whole blood (WB) treated with varying UV doses (10, 20, 40 or 80 J/mL) in the presence of riboflavin (UVR-RBCs). In vitro tests for UVR-RBCs included hemolysis, osmotic fragility, and cellular morphology by scanning electron microscopy. Guinea pigs transfused with one-day post-treatment UVR-RBCs were evaluated for plasma hemoglobin (Hb), non-transferrin bound iron (NTBI), total iron and Perls-detectable hemosiderin deposition in the spleen and kidney, and renal uptake of Hb., Results: Acute RBC injury was dose dependently accelerated after treatment with UV light in the presence of riboflavin. Aberrant RBC morphology was evident at 20, 40, and 80 J/mL, and membrane lysis with Hb release was prominent at 80 J/mL. Guinea pigs transfused with 40 and 80 J/mL UVR-RBCs showed increased plasma Hb levels, and plasma NTBI was elevated in all UVR-RBC groups (10-80 J/mL). Total iron levels and Perls-hemosiderin staining in spleen and kidney as well as Hb uptake in renal proximal tubules were increased 8 hours post-transfusion with 40 and 80 J/mL UVR-RBCs., Discussion: UVR-RBCs administered to guinea pigs increased markers of intravascular and extravascular hemolysis in a UV dose-dependent manner. This model may allow for the discrimination of RBC injury during testing of extensively processed RBCs intended for transfusion.

Rationale: Currently, there are occasional reports of health problems caused by sleep deprivation (SD). However, to date, there remains a lack of in-depth research regarding the effects of SD on the growth and development of oocytes in females. The present work aimed to investigate whether SD influences ovarian folliculogenesis in adolescent female mice. Methods: Using a dedicated device, SD conditions were established in 3-week old female mice (a critical stage of follicular development) for 6 weeks and gut microbiota and systemic metabolomics were analyzed. Analyses were related to parameters of folliculogenesis and reproductive performance of SD females. Results: We found that the gut microbiota and systemic metabolomics were severely altered in SD females and that these were associated with parameters of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). These included increased granulosa cell apoptosis, reduced numbers of primordial follicles (PmFs), correlation with decreased AMH, E2, and increased LH in blood serum, and a parallel increased number of growing follicles and changes in protein expression compatible with PmF activation. SD also reduced oocyte maturation and reproductive performance. Notably, fecal microbial transplantation from SD females into normal females induced POI parameters in the latter while niacinamide (NAM) supplementation alleviated such symptoms in SD females. Water disinfection is undoubtedly regarded as a critical step in ensuring the water safety for human consumption, and ozone is widely used as a highly effective disinfectant for the control of pathogenic microorganisms in water. Although the diminished ozone efficiencies in complex water matrices have been widely reported, the specific extent to which individual components of matrix act on the virus inactivation by ozone remains unclear, and effective methodologies to predict the comprehensive effects of various factors are needed. In this study, the decoupled impact of the intricate water matrix on the ozone inactivation of viruses was systematically investigated and assessed from a simulative perspective. The concept of "equivalent ozone depletion rate constant" (k') was introduced to quantify the influence of different species, and a kinetic model was developed based on the k' values for simulating the ozone inactivation processes in complex matrix. The mechanisms through which diverse species influenced the ozone inactivation effectiveness were identified: 1) competition effects (k' = 10 5 ∼10 7 M -1 s -1 ), including organic matters and reductive ions (SO 3 2- , NO 2 - , and I - ), which were the most influential species inhibiting the virus inactivation; 2) shielding effects (k' = 10 3 ∼10 4 M -1 s -1 ), including Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and kaolin; 3) insignificant effects (k' = 0∼1 M -1 s -1 ), including Cl - , SO 4 2- , NO 3 - , NH 4 + , and Br - ; 4) promotion effects (k' = ∼-10 3 M -1 s -1 ), including CO 3 2- and HCO 3 - . Prediction of ozone disinfection efficiency and evaluation of species contribution under complex aquatic matrices were successfully realized utilizing the model. The exceptional hydrophobicity and antifouling properties of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composites have attracted extensive interest as a result of low surface energy. However, PDMS composites are hardly bound by common primers, greatly limiting their practical applications. To address this issue, an EPMS/VTMS (EV) primer synthesized by hydrolytic polycondensation of 3-[(2,3)-epoxypropoxypropyl]methyldiethoxysilane (EPMS) and vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) in acidic conditions is proposed. Interestingly, the EV primer exhibits exceptional reactivity, self-healing capabilities, and strong adhesion to various substrates, including metals, plastics, and glass. The bonding aluminum plates are easily debonded by immersion in water without any residue left. Subsequently, the EV primer has been applied to the interface between silicone leather and the PDMS composite. Results show that the bonding strength for the silicone leather coated with the EV/PDMS composite is 16 times higher than that of the silicone leather modified with the PDMS composite. Meanwhile, the modified silicone leather exhibits impressive antifouling performance, including aqueous and oily stains, appreciable breathability, and excellent wear resistance, even if suffering from 20 000 cycles of abrasion. These excellent advantages for the modified silicone leather should be attributable to the synergistic effect of the EV primer and the PDMS composite. These findings pave the way to develop an ecofriendly debonding primer for PDMS composites, greatly facilitating applications of silicone leather.

Sevoflurane postconditioning has been shown to provide neuroprotection against cerebral hypoxia-ischemia injury, but the mechanisms remain elusive. Microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) is implicated in early neuronal hypoxia-ischemia injury. This study aimed to investigate whether the neuroprotective effects of sevoflurane postconditioning are related to the Akt/GSK-3β pathway and its downstream target MAP2 in zebrafish hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) model. Sevoflurane postconditioning or GSK-3β inhibitor TDZD-8 were used to treat H/R zebrafish. The cerebral infarction, neuronal apoptosis, and mitochondrial changes were evaluated using TTC staining, TUNEL staining, and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The distribution of MAP2 in the brain was determined by immunofluorescence imaging. The levels of Akt, p-Akt, GSK-3β, p-GSK-3β, and MAP2 proteins were evaluated by Western blotting. The neurobehavioral recovery of zebrafish was assessed based on optokinetic response behavior. Our results indicated that sevoflurane postconditioning and TDZD-8 significantly reduced the cerebral infarction area, suppressed cell apoptosis, and improved mitochondrial integrity in zebrafish subjected to H/R. Furthermore, sevoflurane postconditioning and TDZD-8 elevated the ratios of p-Akt/Akt and p-GSK-3β/GSK-3β. However, the neuroprotective effect of sevoflurane postconditioning was effectively abolished upon suppression of MAP2 expression. Current biological wastewater treatment processes usually have a drawback of insufficient nitrogen (N) removal, contributing to the ubiquitous eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems globally. To address such a challenging situation, this study explored an innovative microalgal-bacterial granular sludge-marimo (MBGS-MA) coupling process. The process removed 83.4 % of N with the effluent N concentration of 4.0 mg/L. With the growth of MBGS, there was a shift towards genes associated with nitrification and denitrification, and away from ammonia assimilation genes, revealing internal mechanism of the shift of N removal pathway. Contrarily, MA could use gaseous N 2 with the N fixing genes in MA enriched, and the genes abundance related to assimilatory nitrate reduction were also raised under the mutualistic interactions between Proteobacteria and Cyanobacteria, which was beneficial to achieve efficient N removal. This study investigated the effect of astragalus polysaccharide (APS, an ingredient with hypoglycemic function in a traditional Chinese herbal medicine) on gut microbiota and metabolites of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients using a simulated fermentation model in vitro. The main components of APS were isolated, purified, and structure characterized. APS fermentation was found to increase the abundance of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium and decrease the Escherichia-Shigella level in the fecal microbiota of T2DM patients. Apart from increasing propionic acid, APS also caused an increase in all-trans-retinoic acid and thiamine (both have antioxidant properties), with their enrichment in the KEGG pathway associated with thiamine metabolism, etc. Notably, APS could also enhance fecal antioxidant properties. Correlation analysis confirmed a significant positive correlation of Lactobacillus with thiamine and DPPH-clearance rate, suggesting the antioxidant activity of APS was related to its ability to enrich some specific bacteria and upregulate their metabolites.

Direct regeneration has gained much attention in LiFePO 4 battery recycling due to its simplicity, ecofriendliness, and cost savings. However, the excess carbon residues from binder decomposition, conductive carbon, and coated carbon in spent LiFePO 4 impair electrochemical performance of direct regenerated LiFePO 4 . Herein, we report a preoxidation and prilling collaborative doping strategy to restore spent LiFePO 4 by direct regeneration. The excess carbon is effectively removed by preoxidation. At the same time, prilling not only reduces the size of the primary particles and shortens the diffusion distance of Li + but also improves the tap density of the regenerated materials. Besides, the Li + transmission of the regenerated LiFePO 4 is further improved by Ti 4+ doping. Compared with commercial LiFePO 4 , it has excellent low-temperature performance. The collaborative strategy provides a new insight into regenerating high-performance spent LiFePO 4 .

At the heart of the non-implantable electronic revolution lies ionogels, which are remarkably conductive, thermally stable, and even antimicrobial materials. Yet, their potential has been hindered by poor mechanical properties. Herein, a double network (DN) ionogel crafted from 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Emim]Cl), acrylamide (AM), and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was constructed. Tensile strength, fracture elongation, and conductivity can be adjusted across a wide range, enabling researchers to fabricate the material to meet specific needs. With adjustable mechanical properties, such as tensile strength (0.06-5.30 MPa) and fracture elongation (363-1373%), this ionogel possesses both robustness and flexibility. This ionogel exhibits a bi-modal response to temperature and strain, making it an ideal candidate for strain sensor applications. It also functions as a flexible strain sensor that can detect physiological signals in real time, opening doors to personalized health monitoring and disease management. Moreover, these gels' ability to decode the intricate movements of sign language paves the way for improved communication accessibility for the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. This DN ionogel lays the foundation for a future in which e-skins and wearable sensors will seamlessly integrate into our lives, revolutionizing healthcare, human-machine interaction, and beyond.

The present study developed a novel biochar-augmented enzymatic approach for fast conversion of food waste to solid and liquid biofertilizers. By augmented with 10 % of biochar and mediated with 5 % of food waste-derived hydrolytic enzymes mixture (i.e. fungal mash), 100 kg of food waste could be converted into 22.3 kg of solid biofertilizer with a water content of 30 % and 55.0 kg of liquid biofertilizer, which fulfilled Chinese national standards for solid and liquid organic biofertilizers, respectively. Field plantation results showed that the Pak Choi grown on food waste-derived biofertilizers was comparable with that on commercial ones, in terms of the vegetable productivity and nutrient contents. It was further revealed that the application of food waste-derived biofertilizers did not change soil chemical properties but enriched microbial diversity. Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), identified as an endocrine-disrupting chemical, is associated with reproductive toxicity. This association is particularly noteworthy in newborns with incompletely developed metabolic functions, as exposure to DEHP can induce enduring damage to the reproductive system, potentially influencing adult reproductive health. In this study, we continuously administered 40 μg/kg and 80 μg/kg DEHP to postnatal day 5 (PD5) mice for ten days to simulate low and high doses of DEHP exposure during infancy. Utilizing single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), our analysis revealed that varying concentrations of DEHP exposure during infancy induced distinct DNA damage response characteristics in testicular Undifferentiated spermatogonia (Undiff SPG). Specifically, DNA damage triggered mitochondrial dysfunction, leading to acetyl-CoA content alterations. Subsequently, this disruption caused aberrations in histone acetylation patterns, ultimately resulting in apoptosis of Undiff SPG in the 40 μg/kg DEHP group and autophagy in the 80 μg/kg DEHP group. Furthermore, we found that DEHP exposure impacts the development and functionality of Sertoli and Leydig cells through the focal adhesion and PPAR signaling pathways, respectively. We also revealed that Leydig cells regulate the metabolic environment of Undiff SPG via Ptn-Sdc4 and Mdk-Sdc4 after DEHP exposure. Finally, our study provided pioneering evidence that disruptions in testicular homeostasis induced by DEHP exposure during infancy endure into adulthood. Conductive inks are one of the most important functional materials for printed flexible electronic devices, and their properties determine the methods of subsequent patterning and metallization. In comparison with copper nanoparticle or nanowire inks, copper particle-free inks employing copper(II) formate (Cuf) as a precursor have attracted the interest of researchers due to their flexibility in preparation, excellent stability, and lower conversion temperature. Alkanolamines can provide Cuf with excellent solubility in alcohols while being less toxic and having a certain reducibility, making them preferable ligands in comparison with aliphatic amines and pyridine. However, there have been few studies on the effects of the alkanolamine types on the performance of Cuf inks. Also, the decomposition mechanism of copper-alkanolamine complex inks is not clear. In this work, different kinds of alkanolamines were chosen as ligands to formulate Cuf inks to address the mentioned issues. The influences of amine types on the stability, wettability, thermal decomposition behavior, and electrical performance of the formulated Cuf particle-free inks were investigated in detail. The results show that the utilization of alkanolamines could provide Cuf with excellent solubility in alcohols, resulting in an ink with good stability and favorable wetting properties. The thermal decomposition temperature and electrical performance of the formulated copper ink are largely dependent on the amine used. When amines with a longer carbon chain and more branches were utilized to prepare the ink, a decreased decomposition temperature was observed on the derived inks because of the steric hindrance effect. Copper films with good morphology and conductivity could be obtained at low temperatures by selecting the appropriate alkanolamine. Copper particle-free conductive ink from 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol demonstrated better morphology and electrical performance (16.09 μΩ·cm) and was successfully used for conductive circuits by direct-writing.

Metal single-atom catalysts (M-SACs) attract extraordinary attention for promoting oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with 100% atomic utilization. However, low metal loading (usually less than 2 wt%) limits their overall catalytic performance. Herein, a hierarchical-structure-stabilization strategy for fabricating high-loading (18.3%) M-SACs with efficient ORR activity is reported. Hierarchical pores structure generated with high N content by SiO 2 can provide more coordination sites and facilitate the adsorption of Fe 3+ through mesoporous and confinement effect of it stabilizes Fe atoms in micropores on it during pyrolysis. High N content on hierarchical pores structure could provide more anchor sites of Fe atoms during the subsequent secondary pyrolysis and synthesize the dense and accessible Fe-N 4 sites after subsequent pyrolysis. In addition, Se power is introduced to modulate the electronic structure of Fe-N 4 sites and further decrease the energy barrier of the ORR rate-determining step. As a result, the Fe single atom catalyst delivers unprecedentedly high ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.895 V in 0.1 M KOH aqueous solution and 0.791 V in 0.1 M HClO 4 aqueous solution. Therefore, a hierarchical-pore-stabilization strategy for boosting the density and accessibility of Fe-N 4 species paves a new avenue toward high-loading M-SACs for various applications such as thermocatalysis and photocatalysis., (© 2023 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) hold prospects in wastewater energy and resource recovery. Anode optimization is important for simultaneous enhancement of wastewater energy conversion and effluent quality in BESs. In this study, a multi-physics model coupling fluid flow, organic degradation and electrochemical process was constructed to guide the design and optimization of BES anodes. Based on the multi-physics simulation, spatially-assembled binary carbon anodes composed of three-dimensional carbon mesh skeleton and granular activated carbon were proposed and established. The granular activated carbon conducive to microbe accommodation played a vital role in improving effluent water quality, while the carbon mesh skeleton favoring electron collection and transfer could enhance the bioelectricity output. With an average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate of 0.442 kg m -3 d -1 , a maximum power density of 20.6 W m -3 was achieved in the optimized composite anode BES, which was 25% and 154% higher than carbon mesh skeleton BES and granular activated carbon BES. Electroactive bacteria were enriched in composite anodes and performed important functions related to microbial metabolism and energy production. The spatially-assembled binary carbon anode with low carbon mesh packing density was more cost-effective with a daily energy output per anode cost of 221 J d -1 RMB -1 . Transportation-induced damage to fresh produce is a big challenge in logistics. Current acceleration and pressure sensors for collision monitoring face issues of power dependency, high cost, and environmental concerns. Here, a self-powered and environmentally friendly triboelectric sensor has been developed to monitor fruit collisions in transportation packaging. Microcrystalline cellulose/chitosan and sodium alginate films were prepared as positive and negative tribo-layers to assemble a natural polysaccharide film-based triboelectric nanogenerator (NP-TENG). The NP-TENG's electrical output was proportional to the structure parameters (contact surface roughness and separation gap of the tribo-layers) and the vibration factors (force and frequency) and exhibited excellent stability and durability (over 100,000 cycles under 13 N at 10 Hz). The high mechanical-to-electrical conversion efficiency (instantaneous areal power density of 9.6 mW/m 2 ) and force sensitivity (2.2 V/N) enabled the NP-TENG to be a potential sensor for monitoring fresh produce collisions in packaging during logistics. Transportation simulation measurements of kiwifruits verified that the sensor's electrical outputs increased with the vibration frequency and stacking layer while varying at different packaging locations. This study suggests that the NP-TENG can effectively monitor collision damage during fruit transportation, providing new insights into developing intelligent food packaging systems to reduce postharvest supply chain losses.

We report the synthesis of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/sodium carboxy methyl cellulose (PAMAA/CMC-Na) hydrogels, and subsequent fabrication of dual-network polymer hydrogels (PAMAA/CMC-Na/Fe) using as-prepared via the salt solution (FeCl 3 ) immersion method. The created dual-network polymer hydrogels exhibit anti-swelling properties, frost resistance, high conductivity, and good mechanical performance. The hydrogel swells sightly when immersed in solution (pH = 2~11). With the increase in n AA :n AM , the modulus of elasticity experiences a rise from 1.1 to 1.6 MPa, while the toughness undergoes an increase from 0.18 to 0.24 MJ/m 3 . Furthermore, the presence of a high concentration of CMC-Na also contributes to the enhancement of mechanical strength in the resulting hydrogels, ascribing to enhanced physical network of the hydrogels. The minimum freezing point reaches -21.8 °C when the CMC-Na concentration is 2.5%, owing to the dissipated hydrogen bonds by the coordination of Fe 3+ with carboxyl (-COO - ) in CMC-Na and PAMAA. It is found that the conductivity of the PAMAA/CMC-Na/Fe hydrogels gradually decreased from 2.62 to 0.6 S/m as the concentration of CMC-Na rises. The obtained results indicates that the dual-network hydrogels with high mechanical properties, anti-swelling properties, frost resistance, and electrical conductivity can be a competitive substance used in the production of bendable sensors and biosensors.

Introduction: Depression is a complex psychiatric disorder with substantial societal impact. While current antidepressants offer moderate efficacy, their adverse effects and limited understanding of depression's pathophysiology hinder the development of more effective treatments. Amidst this complexity, the role of neuroinflammation, a recognized but poorly understood associate of depression, has gained increasing attention. This study investigates hydroxytyrosol (HT), an olive-derived phenolic antioxidant, for its antidepressant and anti-neuroinflammatory properties based on mitochondrial protection. Methods: In vitro studies on neuronal injury models, the protective effect of HT on mitochondrial ultrastructure from inflammatory damage was investigated in combination with high-resolution imaging of mitochondrial substructures. In animal models, depressive-like behaviors of chronic restraint stress (CRS) mice and chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) rats were examined to investigate the alleviating effects of HT. Targeted metabolomics and RNA-Seq in CUMS rats were used to analyze the potential antidepressant pathways of HT. Results: HT protected mitochondrial ultrastructure from inflammatory damage, thus exerting neuroprotective effects in neuronal injury models. Moreover, HT reduced depressive-like behaviors in mice and rats exposed to CRS and CUMS, respectively. HT's influence in the CRS model included alleviating hippocampal neuronal damage and modulating cytokine production, mitochondrial dysfunction, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling. Targeted metabolomics in CUMS rats revealed HT's effect on neurotransmitter levels and tryptophan-kynurenine metabolism. RNA-Seq data underscored HT's antidepressant mechanism through the BDNF/TrkB signaling pathways, key in nerve fiber functions, myelin formation, microglial differentiation, and neural regeneration. Discussion: The findings underscore HT's potential as an anti-neuroinflammatory treatment for depression, shedding light on its antidepressant effects and its relevance in nutritional psychiatry. Construction of a built-in electric field has been identified as an attractive improvement strategy for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting by facilitating the carrier extraction from the inside to the surface. However, the promotion effect of the electric field is still restrained by the confined built-in area. Herein, we construct a microscale built-in electric field via gradient oxygen doping. The octahedral configuration of the synthesized CdIn 2 S 4 (CIS) provides a structural basis, which enables the subsequent oxygen doping to reach a depth of ∼100 nm. Accordingly, the oxygen-doped CIS (OCIS) photoanode exhibits a microscale built-in electric field with band bending. Excellent PEC catalytic activity with a photocurrent density of 3.69 mA cm -2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE is achieved by OCIS, which is 3.1 times higher than that of CIS. Combining the results of thorough characterization and theoretical calculations, accelerating migration and separation of charge carriers have been determined as the reasons for the improvement. Meanwhile, the recombination risk at the doping centers has also been reduced to the minimum via optimal experiments. This work provides a new-generation idea for constructing a built-in electric field from the view point of bulky configuration towards PEC water splitting.

Purpose: This study develop a novel linear energy transfer (LET) optimization method for intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) with minimum monitor unit (MMU) constraint using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)., Material and Methods: The novel LET optimization method (ADMM-LET) was proposed with (1) the dose objective and the LET objective as the optimization objective and (2) the non-convex MMU threshold as a constraint condition. ADMM was used to solve the optimization problem. In the ADMM-LET framework, the optimization process entails iteratively solving the dose sub-problem and the LET sub-problem, simultaneously ensuring compliance with the MMU constraint. Three representative cases, including brain, liver, and prostate cancer, were utilized to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The dose and LET distributions from ADMM-LET were compared to those obtained using the published iterative convex relaxation (ICR-LET) method., Results: The results demonstrate the superiority of ADMM-LET over ICR-LET in terms of LET distribution while achieving a comparable dose distribution. More specifically, for the brain case, the maximum LET (unit: keV/µm ) at the optic nerve decreased from 5.45 (ICR-LET) to 1.97 (ADMM-LET). For the liver case, the mean LET (unit: keV/µm ) at the clinical target volume increased from 4.98 (ICR-LET) to 5.50 (ADMM-LET). Methanol is a promising renewable fuel for achieving a better engine combustion efficiency and lower exhaust emissions. Under exhaust gas recirculation conditions, trace amounts of nitrogen oxides have been shown to participate in fuel oxidation and impact the ignition characteristics significantly. Despite numerous studies that analyzed the methanol/NO x interaction, no reliable skeletal kinetic mechanism is available for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. This work focuses on developing a skeletal CH 3 OH/NO x kinetic model consisting of 25 species and 55 irreversible and 27 reversible reactions, used for full-cycle engine combustion simulations. New experiments of methanol with the presence of 200 ppmv NO/NO 2 were conducted in a rapid compression machine (RCM) at engine-relevant conditions (20-30 bar, 850-950 K). Experimental results indicate notable enhancement effects of the presence of NO/NO 2 on methanol ignition under the conditions tested, which highlights the importance of including the CH 3 OH/NO x interactions in predicting combustion performance. The proposed skeletal mechanism was validated against the literature and new methanol and methanol/NO x experiments over a wide range of operating conditions. Furthermore, the skeletal mechanism was applied in three-dimensional (3D) CFD full-cycle simulations of spark-ignition (SI) and turbulent jet ignition (TJI) engine combustion using methanol. Introduction: Males with acute spinal cord injury (SCI) frequently exhibit testosterone deficiency and reproductive dysfunction. While such incidence rates are high in chronic patients, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive., Methods and Results: Herein, we generated a rat SCI model, which recapitulated complications in human males, including low testosterone levels and spermatogenic disorders. Proteomics analyses showed that the differentially expressed proteins were mostly enriched in lipid metabolism and steroid metabolism and biosynthesis. In SCI rats, we observed that testicular nitric oxide (NO) levels were elevated and lipid droplet-autophagosome co-localization in testicular interstitial cells was decreased. We hypothesized that NO impaired lipophagy in Leydig cells (LCs) to disrupt testosterone biosynthesis and spermatogenesis. As postulated, exogenous NO donor (S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP)) treatment markedly raised NO levels and disturbed lipophagy via the AMPK/mTOR/ULK1 pathway, and ultimately impaired testosterone production in mouse LCs. However, such alterations were not fully observed when cells were treated with an endogenous NO donor (L-arginine), suggesting that mouse LCs were devoid of an endogenous NO-production system. Alternatively, activated (M1) macrophages were predominant NO sources, as inducible NO synthase inhibition attenuated lipophagic defects and testosterone insufficiency in LCs in a macrophage-LC co-culture system. In scavenging NO (2-4-carboxyphenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (CPTIO)) we effectively restored lipophagy and testosterone levels both in vitro and in vivo , and importantly, spermatogenesis in vivo . In water purification, the performance of heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes significantly relies upon the utilization of the catalyst's specific surface area (SSA). However, the presence of the structural "dead volume" and pore-size-induced diffusion-reaction trade-off limitation restricts the functioning of the SSA. Here, we reported an effective approach to make the best SSA by changing the traditional 3D spherule catalyst into a 2D-like form and creating an in situ micro-nanolinked structure. Thus, a 2D-like catalyst was obtained which was characterized by a mini "paddy field" surface, and it exhibited a sharply decreased dead volume, a highly available SSA and oriented flexibility. Given its paddy-field-like mass-transfer routine, the organic capture capability was 7.5-fold higher than that of the catalyst with mesopores only. Moreover, such a catalyst exhibited a record-high O 3 -to-·OH transition rate of 2.86 × 10 -8 compared with reported millimetric catalysts (metal base), which contributed to a 6.12-fold higher total organic removal per catalyst mass than traditional 3D catalysts. The facile scale preparation, performance stability, and significant material savings with the 2D-like catalyst were also beneficial for practical applications. Our findings provide a unique and general approach for designing potential catalysts with excellent performance in water purification.

Asthenozoospermia (AZS) is a prevalent contributor to male infertility, characterized by a substantial decline in sperm motility. In recent years, large-scale studies have explored the interplay between the male reproductive system's microecology and its implications for reproductive health. Nevertheless, the direct association between seminal microecology and male infertility pathogenesis remains inconclusive. This study used 16S rDNA sequencing and multi-omics analysis to conduct a comprehensive investigation of the seminal microbial community and metabolites in AZS patients. Patients were categorized into four distinct groups: Normal, mild AZS (AZS-I), moderate AZS (AZS-II), and severe AZS (AZS-III). Microbiome differential abundance analysis revealed significant differences in microbial composition and metabolite profiles within the seminal plasma of these groups. Subsequently, patients were classified into a control group (Normal and AZS-I) and an AZS group (AZS-II and AZS-III). Correlation and cross-reference analyses identified distinct microbial genera and metabolites. Notably, the AZS group exhibited a reduced abundance of bacterial genera such as Pseudomonas, Serratia , and Methylobacterium-Methylorubrum in seminal plasma, positively correlating with core differential metabolite (hexadecanamide). Conversely, the AZS group displayed an increased abundance of bacterial genera such as Uruburuella, Vibrio , and Pseudoalteromonas , with a negative correlation with core differential metabolite (hexadecanamide). In vitro and in vivo experiments validated that hexadecanamide significantly enhanced sperm motility. Using predictive metabolite-targeting gene analysis and single-cell transcriptome sequencing, we profiled the gene expression of candidate target genes PAOX and CA2 . Protein immunoblotting techniques validated the upregulation protein levels of PAOX and CA2 in sperm samples after hexadecanamide treatment, enhancing sperm motility. In conclusion, this study uncovered a significant correlation between six microbial genera in seminal plasma and the content of the metabolite hexadecanamide, which is related to AZS. Sludge bed position in the reactor is one of the key parameters for microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process, which lacks of study. To fill this gap, this study investigated the influence of sludge bed position on MBGS. The sludge bed located closer to the bottom of the bioreactor demonstrated the optimal pollutant removal performance due to a close synergistic effect between microalgae and bacteria, resulting in the high growth rate as well as agglomeration rate of MBGS. Specifically, organics and ammonia removals were closely related to the sludge bed position. For the bottom bed position, the removals of organic matter, ammonia, and phosphate were 75.1 %, 73.1 %, and 82.5 %, whereas for the top bed position, they were only 13.2 %, 9.6 %, and 68.9 %, respectively. Additionally, a significant correlation between the position of the sludge bed and the relative abundance of Rotifera (R 2  = 0.931) and Chlorophyta (R 2  = 0.733) was observed, while the microbial communities at the lower sludge bed positions underwent rapider succession. It can be inferred that that a sludge bed located closer to the bottom of the bioreactor ensures that the light source and substrate matrix are transmitted in the same direction, thereby resulting in a close synergistic effect between microalgae and bacteria for achieving the excellent performance of MBGS. Background: Copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase ( CCS ) is an essential component of the oxidation-reduction system. In breast cancer cells, CCS expression is highly up-regulated, which contributes to cellular proliferation and migration. Breast cancer is a multifaceted disease with different tumor prognoses and responses to clinical treatments, which may be associated with multiple molecular subtypes of CCS ., Methods: The CCS expression patterns in breast cancer were investigated by TNMplot, cBioPortal, and HPA network database. The correlation of CCS expression with clinicopathological parameters was analyzed using the UALCAN database. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data set was used to analyze the Clinical characteristics of CCS in luminal B patients. The bc-GenExMiner database was used to analyze the effects of BReast-CAncer susceptibility gene (BRCA)1/2, TP53 mutation status, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER) expression on CCS expression. The survival curves and prognostic value of CCS in luminal B breast cancer were performed through Kaplan-Meier curves, univariate and multivariate Cox regression using the PrognoScan, bc-GenExMiner, and Clinical bioinformatics analysis platform., Results: We found that CCS expression was associated with patient age, race, ER, and PR status. We also discovered that BRCA1/2 mutations had an effect on CCS expression. The luminal B subtype had the highest CCS expression, which was linked to poor survival compared with other subtypes. In addition, Kaplan-Meier curve analysis showed that luminal B patients with high CCS mRNA expression showed a poor survival and the CCS gene is an independent predictor of outcome in patients with luminal B breast cancer by univariate and multivariate Cox regression., Conclusions: Our findings emphasize the significant expression of CCS in luminal B breast cancer and its potential as an autonomous prognostic determinant for this specific molecular subtype. Proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) are an attractive means to target previously undruggable or drug-resistant mutant proteins. While small molecule-based PROTACs are stable and can cross cell membranes, there is limited availability of suitable small molecule warheads capable of recruiting proteins to an E3 ubiquitin ligase for degradation. With advances in structural biology and in silico protein structure prediction, it is now becoming easier to define highly selective peptides suitable for PROTAC design. As a result, peptide-based PROTACs are becoming a feasible proposition for targeting previously "undruggable" proteins not amenable to small molecule inhibition. In this review, we summarize recent progress in the design and application of peptide-based PROTACs as well as several practical approaches for obtaining candidate peptides for PROTACs. We also discuss the major hurdles preventing the translation of peptide-based PROTACs from bench to bedside, such as their delivery and bioavailability, with the aim of stimulating discussion about how best to accelerate the clinical development of peptide- based PROTACs in the near future., (Copyright© Bentham Science Publishers; For any queries, please email at epub@benthamscience.net.)

The rapidly evolving global warming is triggering all levels of actions to reduce industrial carbon emissions, while capturing carbon dioxide of industrial origin via microalgae has attracted increasing attention. This article attempted to offer preliminary analysis on the carbon capture potential of microalgal cultivation. It was shown that the energy consumption-associated with operation and nutrient input could significantly contribute to indirect carbon emissions, making the microalgal capture of carbon dioxide much less effective. In fact, the current microalgae processes may not be environmentally sustainable and economically viable in the scenario where the carbon footprints of both upstream and downstream processing are considered. Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) is an effective technology for advanced wastewater treatment, while the influence of coexisting salts remains unclear and controversial. Here, we systematically explored the influence of NaCl salinity on the reaction and mass transfer of HCO through lab experiments, kinetic simulation, and computational fluid dynamics modeling, and proposed that the trade-off between reaction inhibition and mass transfer enhancement would affect the pollutants degradation pattern under varying salinity. The increase of NaCl salinity decreased ozone solubility and accelerated the futile consumption of ozone and hydroxyl radicals ( • OH), and the maximum • OH concentration under 50 g/L salinity was only 23% of that without salinity. However, the increase of NaCl salinity also significantly reduced the ozone bubble size and enhanced the interphase and intraliquid mass transfer, with the volumetric mass transfer coefficient being 130% higher than that without salinity. The trade-off between reaction inhibition and mass transfer enhancement shifted under different pH values and aerator pore sizes, and the oxalate degradation pattern would change correspondingly. Besides, the trade-off was also identified for Na 2 SO 4 salinity. These results emphasized the dual influence of salinity and offered a new theoretical perspective on the role of salinity in the HCO process.

A carboxylatopillar[5]arene-embellished (CP5) magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite (MGO@CP5) was smoothly constructed via a mild layer-by-layer method. The morphology, structure, and surface characteristics of this nanocomposite was investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, zeta potential, and other techniques. Benefiting from a high capture ability for small molecules of CP5 as a supramolecular host molecule, along with a negative surface charge and large surface area of MGO@CP5, this nanocomposite exhibits an ultrafast, efficient adsorption property for representative cationic dyes: methylene blue (MB) and basic fuchsin (BF). The removal efficiency of MB and BF can reach nearly 99% within 3 min, while the maximum adsorption capacity of the two dyes reaches 240 mg g -1 for MB and 132 mg g -1 for BF. Furthermore, owing to excellent magnetic responsiveness from the tight loading of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles on graphene oxide, MGO@CP5 could be easily and magnetically separated, regenerated, and reused four times without an evident reduction in the removal efficiency (>95%). G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) play a key role in regulating the homeostasis of the internal environment and are closely associated with tumour progression as major mediators of cellular signalling. As a diverse and multifunctional group of proteins, the G protein signalling regulator (RGS) family was proven to be involved in the cellular transduction of GPCRs. Growing evidence has revealed dysregulation of RGS proteins as a common phenomenon and highlighted the key roles of these proteins in human cancers. Furthermore, their differential expression may be a potential biomarker for tumour diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Most importantly, there are few systematic reviews on the functional/mechanistic characteristics and clinical application of RGS family members at present. In this review, we focus on the G-protein signalling regulator (RGS) family, which includes more than 20 family members. We analysed the classification, basic structure, and major functions of the RGS family members. Moreover, we summarize the expression changes of each RGS family member in various human cancers and their important roles in regulating cancer cell proliferation, stem cell maintenance, tumorigenesis and cancer metastasis. On this basis, we outline the molecular signalling pathways in which some RGS family members are involved in tumour progression. Finally, their potential application in the precise diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of different types of cancers and the main possible problems for clinical application at present are discussed.
