The swine industry annually suffers significant economic losses caused by porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). Because the available commercial vaccines have limited protective efficacy against epidemic PRRSV, there is an urgent need for innovative solutions. Nanoparticle vaccines induce robust immune responses and have become a promising direction in vaccine development. In this study, we designed and produced a self-assembling nanoparticle vaccine derived from thermophilic archaeal ferritin to combat epidemic PRRSV. First, multiple T cell epitopes targeting viral structural proteins were identified by IFN-γ screening after PRRSV infection. Three different self-assembled nanoparticles with epitopes targeting viral GP3, GP4, and GP5 proteins were constructed and mixed to generate a FeCocktail vaccine. Experiments showed that the FeCocktail vaccine effectively activated CD4 + and CD8 + T cells and effector memory T cells in mice. Piglets immunized with the FeCocktail vaccine generated specific antibodies and exhibited increased levels of PRRSV-specific IFN-γ produced by functional CD4 + and CD8 + cells. The FeCocktail also provided protective efficacy against PRRSV challenge, including mitigation of clinical symptoms, reduction of viral loads in serum and lungs, and the alleviation of lung tissue damage. In conclusion, this study offers a promising candidate vaccine for combating epidemic PRRSV, and affirms the utility of nanoparticle protein as a platform for next-generation PRRSV vaccine development.

The anatomical reorganization required for C 4 photosynthesis should also impact plant hydraulics. Most C 4 plants possess large bundle sheath cells and high vein density, which should also lead to higher leaf capacitance and hydraulic conductance (K leaf ). Paradoxically, the C 4 pathway reduces water demand and increases water use efficiency, creating a potential mismatch between supply capacity and demand in C 4 plant water relations. Here, we use phylogenetic analyses, physiological measurements, and models to examine the reorganization of hydraulics in closely related C 4 and C 3 grasses. The evolution of C 4 disrupts the expected positive correlation between maximal assimilation rate (A max ) and K leaf , decoupling a canonical relationship between hydraulics and photosynthesis generally observed in vascular plants. Evolutionarily young C 4 lineages have higher K leaf , capacitance, turgor loss point, and lower stomatal conductance than their C 3 relatives. By contrast, species from older C 4 lineages show decreased K leaf and capacitance. The decline of K leaf through the evolution of C 4 lineages was likely controlled by the reduction in outside-xylem hydraulic conductance, for example the reorganization of leaf intercellular airspace. These results indicate that, over time, C 4 plants have evolved to optimize hydraulic investments while maintaining the anatomical requirements for the C 4 carbon-concentrating mechanism., (© 2025 The Author(s). Objective: In China, it is expected that every one in three people will be aged 60 years and above in 2040, surpassing other low- and middle-income countries. The noncommunicable disease (NCD) burden and trends among elderly people must be clarified., Methods: In this trend analysis based on the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2021, we reported NCDs per 100,000 people and average annual percentage changes (AAPCs) in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), mortality, and incidence at three levels of the GBD 2021 hierarchy by age subgroups and by sex in the older population aged 60 years and above in China during 1990-2021., Results: In 2021, there were 382 million incident cases of NCDs among elderly individuals in China, leading to 201 million DALYs and 9 million deaths in the same year. During 1990-2021, although cardiovascular diseases substantially reduced both DALYs (-1.2 %/year) and mortality (-1.08 %/year), cardiovascular diseases still accounted for the greatest percentage of DALYs (31000 per 100,000 population [95 % UI 26071-35908]) and mortality (2025 [1678-2355]) in 2021. During 1990-2021, while the total incidence of NCDs decreased (-0.01 %/year), the incidence of mental disorders (0.68 %/year) rapidly increased. Among all level 3 causes, depressive disorder caused the greatest increases in DALYs (0.74%/year), while chronic respiratory diseases showed the most rapid decreases in both DALYs (-3.6 %/year) and mortality (-3.6 %/year). The priorities of NCD control in each age subgroup and sex among elderly individuals varied. In 2021, males had a greater DALY rate from NCDs per 100,000 people than females did (96409 [95 % UI 80625-112283] vs. 67112 [56878-77547]), but females had a greater incidence rate of NCDs than males did (150276 [139285-163373]) vs. 137571 [127439-148789]). High systolic blood pressure had surpassed household air pollution from solid fuels as the leading risk factor for DALYs among the elderly, and it continued to be the top risk factor for mortality in this population., Conclusions: The total NCD burden among elderly people in China has been decreasing and changing. Substantial reductions in cardiovascular diseases and chronic respiratory disease have been observed, while rapid increases in mental disorders has also been found. Policies need to be updated to reflect the changing risk landscape. Chemically synthesized PEDOT (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)) nanomaterials, with various nanostructured morphologies as well as different intrinsic electrical conductivities and crystallinities, were compared as electrocatalysts for Co(III) reduction in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Electrochemical parameters, charge transfer resistance toward the electrode/electrolyte interface, catalytic activity for Co(III)-reduction, and diffusion of cobalt redox species greatly depend on the morphology, crystallinity, and intrinsic electrical conductivity of the chemically synthesized PEDOTs and optimization of the fabrication procedure for counter electrodes. The PEDOT counter electrode, fabricated by spin coating a DMSO-dispersed PEDOT solution with an ordered 1D structure and nanosized fibers averaging 70 nm in diameter and an electrical conductivity of ∼16 S cm -1 , exhibits the lowest charge transfer resistance, highest diffusion for a cobalt redox mediator and superior electrocatalytic performance compared to a traditional Pt-counter electrode. The photovoltaic performance of the DSSC using chemically synthesized PEDOT exceeds that of a Pt-electrode device because of the enhanced current density, which is directly related to the superior electrocatalytic ability of PEDOT for Co(III)-reduction. This simple spin-coated counter electrode prepared using cheap and scalable chemically synthesized PEDOT can be a potential alternative to the expensive Pt-counter electrode for cobalt and other redox electrolytes in DSSCs and various flexible electronic devices.

Relationships between the visceral adiposity index (VAI) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have been underexplored. The purpose of this study is to explore association between VAI and T2DM in adults in the US. Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2018, 11,214 participants aged 20 years or older were included in a cross-sectional study. Multifactorial logistic regression analysis and smoothed curve fitting analysis were performed to investigate links between VAI and the prevalence of T2DM, as well as the stability and incidence between subgroups. In a fully adjusted continuous model, the aggregate population risk of T2DM increased 0.43-fold with each 1-unit increase in VAI [odds ratio (OR) = 1.43; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.35-1.50]. In the fully adjusted categorical model with VAI scores stratified by quartiles, results showed a higher T2DM advantage among participants in the second, third, and fourth quartiles (Q2: OR 1.35, 95% CI 1.06-1.71; Q3: OR 2.46, 95% CI 1.95-3.11; Q4: OR 4.42, 95% CI 3.55-05.50). Compared with Q1, the prevalence of T2DM in the total population increased 3.42-fold in Q4. The above results indicated that VAI was positively associated with the prevalence of T2DM, which was consistent and nonlinear with the smoothed curve-fitting analysis (P for non-linear = 0). Subgroup analyses after adjusting for covariates showed that keeping with the overall population results, it also was found that there was an interaction between sex and hypertension in the subgroups. Na 4 Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 ) (NFPP) has been considered a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to its environmental friendliness and economic viability. However, its electrochemical performance is constrained by connatural low electronic conductivity and inadequate sodium ion diffusion. Herein, a high-entropy substitution strategy is employed in NFPP to address these limitations. Ex situ X-ray diffraction analysis reveals a single-phase electrochemical reaction during the sodiation/desodiation processes and the increased configurational entropy in HE-NFPP endows an enhanced structure, which results in a minimal volume variation of only 1.83%. Kinetic analysis and density functional theory calculation further confirm that the orbital hybrid synergy of high-entropy transition metals offers a favorable electronic structure, which efficaciously boosts the charge transfer kinetics and optimizes the sodium ion diffusion channel. Based on this versatile strategy, the as-prepared high-entropy Na 4 Fe 2.5 Mn 0.1 Mg 0.1 Co 0.1 Ni 0.1 Cu 0.1 (PO 4 ) 2 (P 2 O 7 ) (HE-NFPP) cathode can deliver a prominent rate performance of 55 mAh g -1 at 10 A g -1 and an ultra-long cycling lifespan of over 18 000 cycles at 5 A g -1 . When paired with a hard carbon (HC) anode, HE-NFPP//HC full cell exhibits a favorable cycling durability of 1000 cycles. Objectives: This study focused on the association between visceral adiposity index (VAI) and the prevalence of hypertension in a nationally representative population of American adults., Methods: The study obtained data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2003-2018 for a large-scale study. This study incorporated participants ≥18 years of age. Multivariate logistic regression modelling and smoothed curve fitting were applied to investigate the existence of a correlation between VAI and hypertension prevalence. Subgroups were analyzed to confirm the stationarity of the association between VAI and hypertension prevalence. In addition, an interaction test was conducted in this study., Results: In completely adapted sequential models, the risk of hypertension prevalence in the overall population increased 0.17-fold with each 1-unit increase in VAI [odds ratio (OR) = 1.17; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12-1.22]. In the wholly adapted categorical model, there was a 0.95-fold increased risk of hypertension in the population of VAI quartile 4 (Q4) vs. VAI quartile 1 (Q1) (OR = 1.95; 95% CI 1.62-2.35). These results indicate that VAI was strongly related to the occurrence of hypertension, and smoothed curve-fitting analysis showed nonlinearity. Objective: To investigate the association between the visceral adiposity index and the prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes in the US adult population., Method: We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2018 for ten consecutive years, including 18745 eligible participants. The weighted multivariate logistic model and fitting curve were used to explore the correlation and dose-response relationship between visceral adiposity index (VAI) and diabetes (DM) and prediabetes in the general population and the prevalence of different subgroups., Results: In the fully adjusted continuous model, the risk of diabetes and prediabetes in the general population increased 0.15 times [1.15 (1.10,1.20), p<0.0001] with every increase of 1 unit of VAI. In the fully adjusted classification model, with the lowest quartile array Q1 of VAI as the reference group, Q2 of the second Quantile group, Q3 of the third Quantile group, and Q4 of the Quartile group increased 0.26 times [1.26 (1.10,1.44), p<0.001], 0.65 times [1.65 (1.43,1.89), p<0.0001], 1.60 times [2.60 (2.28,2.97), p<0.0001] respectively with the risk of diabetes and prediabetes. The above results showed that VAI was positively associated with the prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes, and the fitted curves showed a non-linear trend. (P for non-linear = 0<0.05). Antibiotic contamination has become a global environmental issue of widespread concern, among which oxytetracycline contamination is very severe. In this study, earthworm ( Eisenia fetida ) was exposed to oxytetracycline to study its impact on the soil environment. The total protein (TP), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) oxidative stress indicators in earthworms were measured, and the integrated biomarker response ( IBR ) approach was used to evaluate the toxic effect of oxytetracycline on earthworms. A Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) and a path analysis model were used to explore the physiological and metabolic processes of earthworms after stress occurs. The results showed that SOD, GPX, and GST play important roles in resisting oxytetracycline stress. In addition, stress injury showed a good dose-effect relationship, and long-term stress from pollutants resulted in the most serious damage to the head tissue of earthworms. These results provide a theoretical basis for understanding the toxic effect of oxytetracycline on soil animals, monitoring the pollution status of oxytetracycline in soil, and conducting ecological security risk assessment.

Background: There is growing evidence that antioxidant-rich diets may prevent hyperlipidemia. However, the relationship between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and hyperlipidemia is unclear. The CDAI is a composite score reflecting the antioxidant content of an individual's diet, and this study aimed to investigate the relationship between CDAI and hyperlipidemia., Methods: The study used the 2003-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database for cross-sectional analyses and included 27,626 participants aged 20 years and older. The CDAI, which includes vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, selenium, and carotenoids, was calculated based on dietary intake reported in a 24-h recall interview. Hyperlipidemia was defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP). Covariates included age, sex, race, education, marriage, household poverty-to-income ratio (PIR), glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), body mass index (BMI), energy, carbohydrates, total fat, cholesterol, smoking, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, and lipid-lowering medications. The association between CDAI and hyperlipidemia was explored through multiple logistic regression analyses and smoothed curve fitting. We also performed subgroup analyses and interaction tests to verify the relationship's stability., Results: After adjusting for potential confounders, CDAI was negatively associated with the risk of developing hyperlipidemia (OR 0.98, 95% CI 0.96-0.99, p  < 0.01). The results of weighted regression models stratified by quartiles of CDAI (-8.664 ≤ Q1 ≤ -2.209, -2.209 < Q2 ≤ -0.002, -0.002 < Q3 ≤ 2.774, 2.774 < Q4 ≤ 124.284), fully adjusted for confounding variables, indicated that compared with the bottom quartile (Q1) of the CDAI, Q2, Q3, and Q4 of participants had a lower advantage ratio (Q2: OR 0.91, 95% CI 0.78-1.06, p  < 0.21; Q3: OR 0.85, 95% CI 0.73-1.00, p  < 0.05; and Q4: OR 0.77, 95% CI 0.64-0.94, p  < 0.01), which was confirmed by a test for trend ( p  < 0.05). Smoothed curve fit analysis showed linearity (p for non-linear = 0.0912). In summary, there is a linear negative relationship between CDAI and the risk of developing hyperlipidemia. Subgroup analyses by age, sex, ethnicity, education level, marriage, tobacco status, alcoholic drinking, body mass index (BMI), hypertension, and diabetes did not indicate strong interactions., Conclusion: In this large cross-sectional study, there was a linear negative association between CDAI and hyperlipidemia among US adults. Stimuli-responsive hydrogels can respond to external stimuli with a change in the network structure and thus have potential application in drug release, intelligent sensing, and scaffold construction. Peptides possess robust supramolecular self-assembly ability, enabling spontaneous formation of nanostructures through supramolecular interactions and subsequently hydrogels. Therefore, peptide-based stimuli-responsive hydrogels have been widely explored as smart soft materials for biomedical applications in the last decade. Herein, we present a review article on design strategies and research progress of peptide hydrogels as stimuli-responsive materials in the field of biomedicine. The latest design and development of peptide hydrogels with responsive behaviors to stimuli are first presented. The following part provides a systematic overview of the functions and applications of stimuli-responsive peptide hydrogels in tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound healing, antimicrobial treatment, 3D cell culture, biosensors, etc. Finally, the remaining challenges and future prospects of stimuli-responsive peptide hydrogels are proposed. It is believed that this review will contribute to the rational design and development of stimuli-responsive peptide hydrogels toward biomedical applications.

Plants with the C 4 photosynthesis pathway typically respond to climate change differently from more common C 3 -type plants, due to their distinct anatomical and biochemical characteristics. These different responses are expected to drive changes in global C 4 and C 3 vegetation distributions. However, current C 4 vegetation distribution models may not predict this response as they do not capture multiple interacting factors and often lack observational constraints. Here, we used global observations of plant photosynthetic pathways, satellite remote sensing, and photosynthetic optimality theory to produce an observation-constrained global map of C 4 vegetation. We find that global C 4 vegetation coverage decreased from 17.7% to 17.1% of the land surface during 2001 to 2019. This was the net result of a reduction in C 4 natural grass cover due to elevated CO 2 favoring C 3 -type photosynthesis, and an increase in C 4 crop cover, mainly from corn (maize) expansion. Using an emergent constraint approach, we estimated that C 4 vegetation contributed 19.5% of global photosynthetic carbon assimilation, a value within the range of previous estimates (18-23%) but higher than the ensemble mean of dynamic global vegetation models (14 ± 13%; mean ± one standard deviation). BACKGROUND Academic burnout can affect students' academic behavior and performance and especially damages the careers of medical college students. Medical education systems during the COVID-19 pandemic have met unprecedented challenges that have influenced medical students. This study aimed to explore the effects of psychological resilience, stress, and smartphone addiction on academic burnout among Chinese medical students. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study utilized a cross-sectional design, from March 13, 2022 to March 31, 2022, within the Wannan Medical College, where students completed a web-based survey. The Chinese version of the Academic Burnout Scale (ABS), the 10-item Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC 10) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-4) were used in this survey. Data entry and analysis were conducted using IBM SPSS ver. 22.0. Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) was used to examine the correlations between medical college students' academic burnout and smartphone addiction and mental health. Binary logistic regression analysis was carried out to evaluate the factors influencing academic burnout. RESULTS Of 3190 medical college students who completed the survey, 1521 (47.7%) had some degree of academic burnout. Gender, being a student leader, grades, perceived stress, and smartphone addiction were associated with the total score of academic burnout. Psychological resilience and adapting to online classes were protective factors against academic burnout. CONCLUSIONS Academic burnout is common among medical college students in China after the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is urgent to address this situation to improve the quality of medical education.

The generation of moiré lattices by superimposing two identical sublattices at a specific twist angle has garnered significant attention owing to its potential applications, ranging from two-dimensional materials to manipulating light propagation. While macroscale moiré lattices have been widely studied, further developments in manipulating moiré lattices at the subwavelength scale would be crucial for miniaturizing and integrating platforms. Here, we propose a plasmonic metasurface design consisting of rotated nanoslits arranged within N + N ' round apertures for generating focused moiré lattices. By introducing a spin-dependent geometric phase through the rotated nanoslits, an overall lens and spiral phase can be achieved, allowing each individual set of round apertures to generate a periodic lattice in the focal plane. Superimposing two sets of N and N ' apertures at specific twist angles and varying phase differences allows for the superposition of two sublattices with different periods, leading to the formation of diverse moiré patterns. Our simulations and theoretical results demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed metasurface design. Due to their compactness and tunability, the utilization of metasurfaces in creating nanoscale photonic moiré lattices is anticipated to find extensive applications in integrated and on-chip optical systems.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been significantly improved by utilizing an inorganic hole-transporting layer (HTL), such as nickel oxide. Despite the promising properties, there are still limitations due to defects. Recently, research on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is being actively conducted, which shows promise in reducing defects and enhancing device performance. In this study, we successfully engineered a p-i-n perovskite solar cell structure utilizing HC-A1 and HC-A4 molecules. These SAM molecules were found to enhance the grain morphology and uniformity of the perovskite film, which are critical factors in determining optical properties and device performance. Notably, HC-A4 demonstrated superior performance due to its distinct hydrophilic properties with a contact angle of 50.3°, attributable to its unique functional groups. Overall, the HC-A4-applied film exhibited efficient carrier extraction properties, attaining a carrier lifetime of 117.33 ns. Furthermore, HC-A4 contributed to superior device performance, achieving the highest device efficiency of 20% and demonstrating outstanding thermal stability over 300 h.

Inspired by natural hierarchical self-assembly of proteins and peptides, amino acids, as the basic building units, have been shown to self-assemble to form highly ordered structures through supramolecular interactions. The fabrication of functional biomaterials comprised of extremely simple biomolecules has gained increasing interest due to the advantages of biocompatibility, easy functionalization, and structural modularity. In particular, amino acid based assemblies have shown attractive physical characteristics for various bionanotechnology applications. Herein, we propose a review paper to summarize the design strategies as well as research advances of amino acid based supramolecular assemblies as smart functional materials. We first briefly introduce bioinspired reductionist design strategies and assembly mechanism for amino acid based molecular assembly materials through noncovalent interactions in condensed states, including self-assembly, metal ion mediated coordination assembly, and coassembly. In the following part, we provide an overview of the properties and functions of amino acid based materials toward applications in nanotechnology and biomedicine. Finally, we give an overview of the remaining challenges and future perspectives on the fabrication of amino acid based supramolecular biomaterials with desired properties. We believe that this review will promote the prosperous development of innovative bioinspired functional materials formed by minimalistic building blocks.

Objectives: To explore the mediating role of self-esteem in social anxiety and QoL during the COVID-19 local epidemic in China., Design: A cross-sectional survey., Methods: This study conveniently selected 344 hypertensive patients from a Grade-A tertiary hospital in Wuhu, Anhui Province, as the study population. Participants completed the demographic questionnaire, the social phobia inventory, the self-esteem scale and the 36-item short-form health survey., Results: Social anxiety, self-esteem and QoL were significantly correlated with each other. Social anxiety showed no direct effect on QoL (β = 0.011, p > 0.05). Social anxiety showed an indirect effect on QoL (β = -0.248, p < 0.001). Photo-rechargeable energy storage devices are appealing for substantial research attention because of their possible applications in the Internet of Things (IoT) and low-powered miniaturized portable electronics. However, due to the incompatibility of the photovoltaics and energy storage systems (ESSs), the overall light-to-storage efficiency is limited under indoor light conditions. Herein, a porous carbon scaffold MnO-Mn 3 O 4 /C microsphere-based monolithic dye-sensitized photo-rechargeable asymmetric supercapacitor (DSPC) is fabricated. The integrated DSPC has a high areal specific capacitance of 281.9 mF cm -2 at the discharge rate of 0.01 mA cm -2 . The light-to-electrical conversion efficiency of the DSSC is 27.6% under the 1000 lux compact fluorescent lamp (CFL). The DSPC shows an outstanding light-to-charge storage efficiency of 21.6%, which is higher than that reported ever. Furthermore, the fabricated polymer gel electrolyte-based quasi-solid state (QSS) DSPC shows similar overall conversion efficiency with superior cycling capability. Malolactic fermentation (MLF) by different lactic acid bacteria has a significantly influence on the aromatic and sensory properties of wines. In this study, four strains including two Oenococcus oeni (commercial O-Mega and native DS04) and two Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (commercial NoVA and native NV27) were tested for their performances over MLF and effects on the basic composition, volatile components and sensory property of black raspberry wine. Results of microbial growth kinetics showed Lactiplantibacillus strains had higher fermentation efficiency than Oenococcus . The volatile compounds were determined by GC-IMS; NoVA and NV27 had higher production of volatile esters, and DS04 synthesized more amounts of acetate esters and several alcohols. In terms of sensory evaluation, NV27 and DS04 showed great aroma properties due to the enhanced fruity and sweet aroma. Furthermore, PLS was used for the establishment of the relationship between volatiles and sensory odors and sensory data interpretation.

Cathepsin D (CTSD) is an aspartic endopeptidase, however, we found that it was also capable of enzymatic digestion of nucleic acids (NAs). The purpose of this study was to investigate the basic properties of CTSD enzymatic activity on NAs, and explore the degradation mechanism. The results showed that NAs were efficiently digested between pH 3.0 and 5.0, and the optimum pH was 3.5. CTSD exhibited optimum activity at the temperature of 50°C. The degradation rate was improved with an increased CTSD concentration, and NAs were digested to an enzyme concentration of 0.001%, at which point, NAs were no longer digested. Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ at low concentrations of 5 mM promoted the digestion remarkably. As the protein substrate for CTSD, both Hb and BSA had no effect on DNA degradation, even when the molar ratio of protein:DNA was 10 4 :1. Kinetic parameters of K m and k cat /K m value were (42 ± 1) μM and (1.62 ± 0.1) × 10 -2 s -1 mM -1 respectively, using real-time quantitative PCR (RT-PCR). Specially, pepstatin A which is the specific aspartic protease inhibitor exhibited inhibitory effect on NA digestion by CTSD as well, suggesting that the catalytic active site of CTSD for NAs might be the same as protein. A brief degradation mechanism is discussed. Despite significant progress in device performance, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) continue to fall short of their theoretical potential. Moreover, research in recent years needs to pay more attention to improving the device fabrication process. To achieve the theoretical efficiency limit, it is crucial to optimize the interface between the dye and TiO 2 nanoparticles in the entire device stack. Our study indicates that optimizing the structure or size of the coadsorbents and implementing a monolayer adsorption process can be an effective strategy to reduce charge recombination and enhance light-harvesting properties. Our research aims to develop a surface-coating adsorbent plan that controls the TiO 2 nanoparticle interface to achieve the radiative limit of power conversion efficiency (PCE). Specifically, we utilized 2-thiophenecarboxylic acid ( THCA ) or chenodeoxycholic acid ( CDCA ) as postinterfacial surface-coating adsorbents. Our results demonstrate that this approach effectively achieves the desired PCE limit. Combined with the coadsorbent structure engineering and interface optimization, the device increased the packing area on the TiO 2 nanoparticles' surface, reaching an improved PCE of over 13.17% under simulated sunlight (1.5G), which is the highest efficiency of a porphyrin single dye-based DSSC. In particular, this practical approach was also applied to a large-area DSSC with an area of 3 cm 2 , yielding a remarkable PCE of 9.04%. Furthermore, when applied to a polymer gel electrolyte, this novel approach recorded the highest PCE of 11.16% with a long-term operational stability of up to 1000 h for the quasi-solid-state DSSCs. Our research findings provide a promising avenue for achieving high-performance DSSCs with ease of access and demonstrate practical applications as alternatives to conventional power sources.

Aims: To investigate loneliness, depression and sleep quality in patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) and to examine the mediating role of depression between loneliness and sleep quality among this group of patients with T2DM., Design: A cross-sectional study., Methods: A group of T2DM patients was recruited from a tertiary hospital affiliated with a university in Wuhu City, Anhui Province from May to October 2021 by convenient sampling. Pearson correlation analysis and structural equation modelling were used for data analysis in this study., Results: The direct effect of loneliness on sleep quality was not statistically significant, but the indirect effect of depression on sleep quality was statistically significant. Depression mediated the relationship between loneliness and sleep quality. Depression can affect emotional health and reduce sleep quality. Amorphous high-entropy alloys (HEAs) as electromagnetic-wave absorbing materials have been rarely reported. In this work, amorphous FeCoNiTi x Si HEAs were synthesized by introducing a high content of large-atom Ti using the high-energy ball-milling technique. This amorphous structure could improve the saturated magnetization and coercivity of HEAs, but slightly degraded the mechanical and oxidation resistance properties. In terms of electromagnetic properties, FeCoNiTi 0.01 Si and FeCoNiTiSi exhibit excellent electromagnetic-wave absorption performances, with significant absorptions of -68.4 dB at 6.14 GHz and -63.4 dB at 9.12 GHz, corresponding to bandwidths of 5.15 GHz (1.69 mm) and 3.64 GHz (1.43 mm), respectively. Overall, the prepared FeCoNiTi x Si HEAs exhibited superior comprehensive performances compared to other HEA absorption materials. This work provided a novel strategy for the development of new electromagnetic-wave absorption materials with low weight, high absorption efficiency, and resistance to harsh environments.

This study aimed to develop low-cost D-π-A structured porphyrin and organic dyes with easily synthesizable donor units instead of the conventional complex multistep synthetic donor unit of Hexyloxy-BPFA [bis(7-(2,4-bis(hexyloxy)phenyl)-9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)amine] used in SGT-021 and SGT-149 as well-known record cosensitizers with an extremely high power conversion efficiency (PCE). The design strategy concerned the easier synthesis of low-cost donor units with inversion structures in donor groups via donor structural engineering, particularly by changing the position of the fluorene and phenylene units in the donor moiety while keeping the π-bridge and acceptor unit unchanged, leading to the synthesis of two D-π-A structured porphyrins [ SGT-021(D0) and SGT-021(D) ] and one D-π-A structured organic sensitizer [ SGT-149(D) ] for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Specifically, porphyrin SGT-021(D0) incorporated two hexyl chains into the 9-position of each fluorene, while SGT-021(D) and SGT-149(D) substituted two hexyloxy chain units to the terminal position of each fluorene in the donor groups of porphyrin dyes. The effect of the position of the fluorene and phenylene units in the donor moiety on the photochemical and electrochemical properties, as well as the photovoltaic performance, was compared with the reference dyes of SGT-021 and SGT-149 , previously reported by the research group. After optimizing the DSSC devices, SGT-021(D) and SGT-021(D0) achieved a high PCE of 11.6 and 10.5%, respectively, while SGT-149(D) exhibited a little lower PCE of 10.3% under the standard AM 1.5G light intensity. The cell performance of DSSC devices based on SGT-021(D) and SGT-149(D) was inferior to the corresponding reference dyes of SGT-021 and SGT-149 due to their lower donating ability of Hexyloxy-BPFA than Hexyloxy-BFPA .

Convolution on 3D point clouds is widely researched yet far from perfect in geometric deep learning. The traditional wisdom of convolution characterises feature correspondences indistinguishably among 3D points, arising an intrinsic limitation of poor distinctive feature learning. In this article, we propose Adaptive Graph Convolution (AGConv) for wide applications of point cloud analysis. AGConv generates adaptive kernels for points according to their dynamically learned features. Compared with the solution of using fixed/isotropic kernels, AGConv improves the flexibility of point cloud convolutions, effectively and precisely capturing the diverse relations between points from different semantic parts. Unlike the popular attentional weight schemes, AGConv implements the adaptiveness inside the convolution operation instead of simply assigning different weights to the neighboring points. Extensive evaluations clearly show that our method outperforms state-of-the-arts of point cloud classification and segmentation on various benchmark datasets. Meanwhile, AGConv can flexibly serve more point cloud analysis approaches to boost their performance. To validate its flexibility and effectiveness, we explore AGConv-based paradigms of completion, denoising, upsampling, registration and circle extraction, which are comparable or even superior to their competitors.

Twelve undescribed 15,16-seco-cycloartane triterpenoids, 15,16-seco-cimiterpenes C-N, as well as five previously reported analogs were isolated by NMR-tracking methods from the rhizomes of Cimicifuga acerina (Sieb. et Zucc.) Tanaka. Among them, 15,16-seco-cimiterpenes C-N were the first 15,16-seco-cycloartane triterpenoids featuring acetal or hemiacetal structures at C-15. The chemical structures of 15,16-seco-cimiterpenes C-N were determined based on comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, chemical method, and comparison with the previous literature data. Objectives: To determine if the frequent use of a combined biofeedback-virtual reality device improves headache-related outcomes in chronic migraine., Materials and Methods: In this randomized, controlled pilot study, 50 adults with chronic migraine were randomized to the experimental group (frequent use of a heart rate variability biofeedback-virtual reality device plus standard medical care; n=25) or wait-list control group (standard medical care alone; n=25). The primary outcome was a reduction in mean monthly headache days between groups at 12 weeks. Secondary outcomes included mean change in acute analgesic use frequency, depression, migraine-related disability, stress, insomnia, and catastrophizing between groups at 12 weeks. Tertiary outcomes included change in heart rate variability and device-related user experience measures., Results: A statistically significant reduction in mean monthly headache days between groups was not demonstrated at 12 weeks. However, statistically significant decreases in the mean frequency of total acute analgesic use per month (65% decrease in the experimental group versus 35% decrease in the control group, P <0.01) and depression score (35% decrease in the experimental group versus 0.5% increase in the control group; P <0.05) were shown at 12 weeks. At study completion, more than 50% of participants reported device satisfaction on a 5-level Likert scale., Discussion: Frequent use of a portable biofeedback-virtual reality device was associated with decreases in the frequency of acute analgesic use and in depression in individuals with chronic migraine. The compound pollutants formed by microplastics and cadmium present a significant potential threat to the soil-based ecosystem, and it is urgent to carry out relevant ecotoxicological studies. However, the lack of appropriate test methods and scientific mathematical analysis models has restricted the progress of research. Based on an orthogonal test design, a ternary combined stress test was performed to study the effect of microplastics and cadmium on earthworms. This study used the particle size and concentration of microplastics as well as the concentration of cadmium as test factors. Using the improved factor analysis model and the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method, a new model was constructed according to the response surface methodology to analyze the acute toxic effects on earthworms under the combined stress of microplastics and cadmium. In addition, the model was tested in a soil-polluted environment. The results show that the model can perfectly integrate the spatiotemporal cross effects of the concentration and time of the applied stress, and the scientific data analysis process ensures the efficient development of ecotoxicological research in the actual compound pollution environment. Moreover, the results of the filter paper test and soil test showed that the equivalent toxicity ratio of cadmium concentration, microplastic concentration, and microplastic particle size to earthworms as 26:35:39 and 23:36:41, respectively. In terms of the interaction effect, a certain positive interaction was observed between the cadmium concentration and that of the microplastics and their particle size, while a negative interaction was observed between the concentration of microplastics and their particle size. Each of >20 independent evolutions of C 4 photosynthesis in grasses required reorganization of the Calvin-Benson-cycle (CB-cycle) within the leaf, along with coordination of C 4 -cycle enzymes with the CB-cycle to maximize CO 2 assimilation. Considering the vast amount of time over which C 4 evolved, we hypothesized (i) trait divergences exist within and across lineages with both C 4 and closely related C 3 grasses, (ii) trends in traits after C 4 evolution yield the optimization of C 4 through time, and (iii) the presence/absence of trends in coordination between the CB-cycle and C 4 -cycle provides information on the strength of selection. To address these hypotheses, we used a combination of optimality modelling, physiological measurements and phylogenetic-comparative-analysis. Photosynthesis was optimized after the evolution of C 4 causing diversification in maximal assimilation, electron transport, Rubisco carboxylation, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and chlorophyll within C 4 lineages. Both theory and measurements indicated a higher light-reaction to CB-cycle ratio (J atpmax /V cmax ) in C 4 than C 3 . There were no evolutionary trends with photosynthetic coordination between the CB-cycle, light reactions and the C 4 -cycle, suggesting strong initial selection for coordination. The coordination of CB-C 4 -cycles (V pmax /V cmax ) was optimal for CO 2 of 200 ppm, not to current conditions. Since the last century, animal viruses have posed great threats to the health of humans and the farming industry. Therefore, virus control is of great urgency, and regular, timely, and accurate detection is essential to it. Here, we designed a rapid on-site visual data-sharing detection method for the Newcastle disease virus with smartphone recognition-based immune microparticles. The detection method we developed includes three major modules: preparation of virus detection vectors, sample detection, and smartphone image analysis with data upload. First, the hydrogel microparticles containing active carboxyl were manufactured, which coated nucleocapsid protein of NDV. Then, HRP enzyme-labeled anti-NP nanobody was used to compete with the NDV antibody in the serum for color reaction. Then the rough detection results were visible to the human eyes according to the different shades of color of the hydrogel microparticles. Next, the smartphone application was used to analyze the image to determine the accurate detection results according to the gray value of the hydrogel microparticles. Meanwhile, the result was automatically uploaded to the homemade cloud system. The total detection time was less than 50 min, even without trained personnel, which is shorter than conventional detection methods. According to experimental results, this detection method has high sensitivity and accuracy. And especially, it uploads the detection information via a cloud platform to realize data sharing, which plays an early warning function. Point normal, as an intrinsic geometric property of 3D objects, not only serves conventional geometric tasks such as surface consolidation and reconstruction, but also facilitates cutting-edge learning-based techniques for shape analysis and generation. In this paper, we propose a normal refinement network, called Refine-Net, to predict accurate normals for noisy point clouds. Traditional normal estimation wisdom heavily depends on priors such as surface shapes or noise distributions, while learning-based solutions settle for single types of hand-crafted features. Differently, our network is designed to refine the initial normal of each point by extracting additional information from multiple feature representations. To this end, several feature modules are developed and incorporated into Refine-Net by a novel connection module. Besides the overall network architecture of Refine-Net, we propose a new multi-scale fitting patch selection scheme for the initial normal estimation, by absorbing geometry domain knowledge. Also, Refine-Net is a generic normal estimation framework: 1) point normals obtained from other methods can be further refined, and 2) any feature module related to the surface geometric structures can be potentially integrated into the framework. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations demonstrate the clear superiority of Refine-Net over the state-of-the-arts on both synthetic and real-scanned datasets.

With the rapid development of deep learning techniques and large-scale genomics database, it is of great potential to apply deep learning to the prediction task of anticancer drug sensitivity, which can effectively improve the identification efficiency and accuracy of therapeutic biomarkers. In this study, we propose a parallel deep learning framework DNN-PNN, which integrates rich and heterogeneous information from gene expression and pharmaceutical chemical structure data. With the proposal of DNN-PNN, a new and more effective drug data representation strategy is introduced, that is, the correlation between features is represented by product, which alleviates the limitations of high-dimensional discrete data in deep learning. Furthermore, the framework is optimized to reduce the time complexity of the model. We conducted extensive experiments on the CCLE datasets to compare DNN-PNN with its variant DNN-FM representing the traditional feature correlation model, the component DNN or PNN alone, and the common machine learning models. The pure-MBBR process was applied to remove ammonia in a full-scale micro-polluted-water treatment plant with a daily treatment capacity of 260 × 10 4 m 3 /d, Guangdong, China. The relationship between treatment efficiency, physical and chemical properties and microbial diversity in the process of biofilm growth was explored, and the oxygen transfer model of biofilm was established. The results show that the effluent of two-stage pure MBBR process is stable and up to standard after 10 days' incubation. The nitrification loads of two-stage biofilm was stable on the 14th day. The biomass and biofilm thickness lagged behind the nitrification load, and reached a relatively stable level on the 28th day. The species richness of biofilm basically reached a stable level on the 21st day, and the microbial diversity of primary biofilm was higher. In the primary and secondary stage at different periods, the relative abundance of dominant nitrifying bacteria Nitrospira reaches 8.48-13.60%, 6.48-9.27%, and Nitrosomonas reaches 2.89-5.64%, 0.00-3.48%. The pure MBBR system mainly adopts perforated aeration. Through the cutting and blocking of bubbles by suspended carriers, the oxygen transfer rate of the system was greatly improved.

Three new D-π-A-structured organic dyes, coded as SGT-138 , SGT-150 , and SGT-151 , with the expansion of π-conjugation in the π-bridge and acceptor parts have been developed to adjust HOMO/LUMO levels and to expand the light absorption range of organic dyes. Referring to the SGT-137 dye, the π-bridge group was extended from the 4-hexyl-4 H -thieno[3,2- b ]indole ( TI ) to the 9-hexyl-9 H -thieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2- b ]indole ( TII ), and the acceptor group was extended from ( E )-3-(4-(benzo[ c ][1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-yl)phenyl)-2-cyanoacrylic acid ( BTCA ) to ( E )-3-(4-(benzo[ c ][1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-ylethynyl)phenyl)-2-cyanoacrylic acid ( BTECA ), where TII was introduced as a π-bridging unit for the first time. It was determined that both extensions are promising strategies to enhance the light-harvesting ability. They present several features, such as (i) efficiently intensifying the extinction coefficient and expanding the absorption bands; (ii) exhibiting enhanced intramolecular charge transfer in comparison with the SGT-137 ; and (iii) being favorable to photoelectric current generation of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with cobalt electrolytes. In particular, the π-spacer extension from TI to TII was useful for modulating the HOMO energy levels, while the acceptor extension from BTCA to BTECA was useful for modulating the LUMO energy levels. These phenomena could be explained with the aid of density functional theory calculations. Finally, the DSSCs based on new SGT -dyes with an HC-A1 co-adsorbent presented good power conversion efficiencies as high as 11.23, 11.30, 11.05, and 10.80% for SGT-137 , SGT-138 , SGT-150, and SGT-151 , respectively. Furthermore, it was determined that the use of the bulky co-adsorbent, HC-A1, can effectively suppress the structural relaxation of dyes in the excited state, thereby enhancing the charge injection rate of SGT -dyes. The observations in time-resolved photoluminescence were indeed consistent with the variation in the PCE, quantitatively.

Introduction: Existing multi-view-based 3D model classification methods have the problems of insufficient view refinement feature extraction and poor generalization ability of the network model, which makes it difficult to further improve the classification accuracy. To this end, this paper proposes a multi-view SoftPool attention convolutional network for 3D model classification tasks., Methods: This method extracts multi-view features through ResNest and adaptive pooling modules, and the extracted features can better represent 3D models. Then, the results of the multi-view feature extraction processed using SoftPool are used as the Query for the self-attentive calculation, which enables the subsequent refinement extraction. We then input the attention scores calculated by Query and Key in the self-attention calculation into the mobile inverted bottleneck convolution, which effectively improves the generalization of the network model. Understanding the potential mechanisms and processes of leaf photosynthesis in response to elevated CO 2 concentration ([CO 2 ]) and temperature is critical for estimating the impacts of climatic change on the growth and yield in crops such as maize ( Zea mays L.), which is a widely cultivated C 4 crop all over the world. We examined the combined effect of elevated [CO 2 ] and temperature on plant growth, leaf photosynthesis, stomatal traits, and biochemical compositions of maize with six environmental growth chambers controlling two CO 2 levels (400 and 800 μmol mol -1 ) and three temperature regimes (25/19°C, 31/25°C, and 37/31°C). We found that leaf photosynthesis was significantly enhanced by increasing growth temperature from 25/19°C to 31/25°C independent of [CO 2 ]. However, leaf photosynthesis drastically declined when the growth temperature was continually increased to 37/31°C at both ambient CO 2 concentration (400 μmol mol -1 , a [CO 2 ]) and elevated CO 2 concentration (800 μmol mol -1 , e [CO 2 ]). Meanwhile, we also found strong CO 2 fertilization effect on maize plants grown at the highest temperature (37/31°C), as evidenced by the higher leaf photosynthesis at e [CO 2 ] than that at a [CO 2 ], although leaf photosynthesis was similar between a [CO 2 ] and e [CO 2 ] under the other two temperature regimes of 25/19°C and 31/25°C. Furthermore, we also found that e [CO 2 ] resulted in an increase in leaf soluble sugar, which was positively related with leaf photosynthesis under the high temperature regime of 37/31°C ( R 2 = 0.77). In addition, our results showed that e [CO 2 ] substantially decreased leaf transpiration rates of maize plants, which might be partially attributed to the reduced stomatal openness as demonstrated by the declined stomatal width and stomatal area. C 4 and CAM photosynthesis have repeatedly evolved in plants over the past 30 million years. Because both repurpose the same set of enzymes but differ in their spatial and temporal deployment, they have long been considered as distinct and incompatible adaptations. Portulaca contains multiple C 4 species that perform CAM when droughted. Spatially explicit analyses of gene expression reveal that C 4 and CAM systems are completely integrated in Portulaca oleracea , with CAM and C 4 carbon fixation occurring in the same cells and CAM-generated metabolites likely incorporated directly into the C 4 cycle. Flux balance analysis corroborates the gene expression findings and predicts an integrated C 4 +CAM system under drought. This first spatially explicit description of a C 4 +CAM photosynthetic metabolism presents a potential new blueprint for crop improvement.

Efficient and stable electromagnetic-wave (EMW) absorption materials have attracted great attention in the field of reducing microwave pollution. Herein, FeCoNiCuTi x high-entropy alloys (HEAs) as electromagnetic-wave absorbing materials were prepared by a high-energy ball-milling method. The as-milled HEA powders presented a flaky shape with a high aspect ratio. Impedance matching was efficiently optimized by severe lattice distortion, which was caused by Ti incorporation. The introduced plentiful defects in FeCoNiCuTi x HEAs provided abundant polarization sites for dielectric loss. By tuning Ti contents, FeCoNiCuTi 0.2 HEAs delivered excellent EMW absorption performances. The maximal reflection loss (RL max ) values reached -47.8 dB at 10.86 GHz as thin as 2.16 mm, and the widest bandwidth was 4.76 GHz (5.97-10.73 GHz). Furthermore, the introduction of Ti enhanced corrosion resistance via increasing the charge transfer resistance of a passivated film. Those characteristics of FeCoNiCuTi x HEAs made these materials a practical gigahertz-range EMW absorber. Additionally, our findings provided a facile and tunable strategy for designing EMW absorbing materials, which was aimed at lightweight, highly efficient absorption, and resistance to harsh environments.

Li-S batteries are considered to be the most promising next-generation advanced energy-storage systems. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics and the "shuttle effect" of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) severely limit their battery performances. To overcome the complex and multiphase sulfur redox chemistry of LiPSs, in this study, we propose a new type of cobalt-based double catalytic sites (DCSs) codoped mesoporous carbon to immobilize and reversibly catalyze the LiPS intermediates in the cycling process, thus eliminating the shuttle effect and improving the charge-discharge kinetics. The theoretical calculation shows that the well-designed DCS configuration endows LiPSs with both strong and weak binding capabilities, which will facilitate the synergistic and reversible catalytic conversion. Furthermore, the experimental results also confirm that the DCS structure shows significantly enhanced catalytic kinetics than the single catalytic sites. The Li-S battery equipped with the DCS structure displays an extremely high discharge capacity of 918 mA h g -1 at a current density of 0.2 C and can reach a capacity of 867 mA h g -1 after 200 cycles with an ultralow capacity attenuation rate of 0.028% for each cycle. This study opens new avenues to address the catalytic requirements both in discharging and charging processes.

Engineering efficient zinc-air batteries have attracted tremendous attention because of their essential role in the field of renewable energy systems. However, the sluggish reaction kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the air cathode impair the battery performance significantly. Recently, metal-N-C-based porous carbon nanoarchitectures have emerged as promising ORR electrocatalysts in zinc-air batteries. Herein, taking advantage of metal-organic complexation and mesoporous silica templates, we successfully anchor Fe-N-C sites on hierarchically porous carbon sphere and carbon nanotube interpenetrated nanostructures (Fe-N-C/HPCS@CNT) to serve as efficient cathodes for zinc-air batteries. Benefiting from its synergistic effects between the highly active Fe-N-C sites, ultrahigh surface areas, and unique hierarchically porous nanostructures, Fe-N-C/HPCS@CNT exhibits preferable ORR performance ( E 1/2 = 0.873 V) compared to commercial Pt/C ( E 1/2 = 0.841 V). Most importantly, when used as a cathode catalyst for homemade zinc-air batteries, Fe-N-C/HPCS@CNT exhibits gratifying peak power density (164.0 mW cm -2 ), large specific capacity (762.0 mAh g -1 ), superior long-term stability, extraordinary rate capability, and excellent charge/discharge performance. We believe that this report will not only offer new insights into the design of Fe-N-C-based catalysts but also promote the practical utilization of Fe-N-C-based cathodes for a wide range of energy applications.

Background: Plant long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play vital roles in many biological processes mainly through interactions with RNA-binding protein (RBP). To understand the function of lncRNAs, a fundamental method is to identify which types of proteins interact with the lncRNAs. However, the models or rules of interactions are a major challenge when calculating and estimating the types of RBP., Results: In this study, we propose an ensemble deep learning model to predict plant lncRNA-protein interactions using stacked denoising autoencoder and convolutional neural network based on sequence and structural information, named PRPI-SC. PRPI-SC predicts interactions between lncRNAs and proteins based on the k-mer features of RNAs and proteins. Experiments proved good results on Arabidopsis thaliana and Zea mays datasets (ATH948 and ZEA22133). The accuracy rates of ATH948 and ZEA22133 datasets were 88.9% and 82.6%, respectively. PRPI-SC also performed well on some public RNA protein interaction datasets., Conclusions: PRPI-SC accurately predicts the interaction between plant lncRNA and protein, which plays a guiding role in studying the function and expression of plant lncRNA. As a novel lactate-derived post-translational modification (PTM), lysine lactylation (Kla) is involved in diverse biological processes, and participates in human tumorigenesis. Identification of Kla substrates with their exact sites is crucial for revealing the molecular mechanisms of lactylation. In contrast with labor-intensive and time-consuming experimental approaches, computational prediction of Kla could provide convenience and increased speed, but is still lacking. In this work, although current identified Kla sites are limited, we constructed the first Kla benchmark dataset and developed a few-shot learning-based architecture approach to leverage the power of small datasets and reduce the impact of imbalance and overfitting. A maximum 11.7% (0.745 versus 0.667) increase of area under the curve (AUC) value was achieved in contrast to conventional machine learning methods. We conducted a comprehensive survey of the performance by combining 8 sequence-based features and 3 structure-based features and tailored a multi-feature hybrid system for synergistic combination. This system achieved >16.2% improvement of the AUC value (0.889 versus 0.765) compared with single feature-based models for the prediction of Kla sites in silico . Taken few-shot learning and hybrid system together, we present our newly designed predictor named FSL-Kla, which is not only a cutting-edge tool for Kla site profile but also could generate candidates for further experimental approaches. Here we report a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) based infrared plasmonic metamaterial absorber consisting of deep subwavelength meander line nanoantennas. High absorption composed of two-hybrid modes from 11 μm to 14 μm is experimentally demonstrated with a pixel pitch of 1.47 μm corresponding to a compression ratio of 8.57. The physical mechanisms responsible for novelty spectral absorption, including the strong coupling between the plasmon resonances and the phonon vibrations, material loss from the dielectric spacer, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), and Berreman mode excited by oblique incidence, have been systematically analyzed by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, Fabry-Perot resonance model and two-coupled damped oscillator model. At oblique incidence, a spectral splitting related to the strong coupling between LSPR mode and Berreman mode is also observed. The distribution of local electromagnetic fields and ohmic loss are numerically investigated. Moreover, we evaluate the absorption performances with finite-sized arrays. We also show that the absorber can maintain its absorption with a 2 × 2 nanoantenna array. Such a miniaturized absorber can adapt to infrared focal plane arrays with a pixel size smaller than 5 μm, and thermal analysis is also performed. Our approach provides an effective way to minimize the antenna footprint without undermining the absorber performances, paving the way towards its integration with small pixels of infrared focal plane arrays for enhanced performances and expanded functionalities.

Glioblastoma (GBM) recurrence is attributed to the presence of therapy-resistant glioblastoma stem cells. Steroid receptor coactivator-1 (SRC-1) acts as an oncogenic regulator in many human tumors. The relationship between SRC-1 and GBM has not yet been studied. Herein, we investigate the role of SRC-1 in GBM. In this study, we found that SRC-1 expression is positively correlated with grades of glioma and inversely correlated with glioma patient's prognosis. Steroid receptor coactivator-1 promotes the proliferation, migration, and tumor growth of GBM cells. Notably, SRC-1 knockdown suppresses the stemness of GBM cells. Mechanistically, long noncoding RNA X-inactive specific transcript (XIST) is regulated by SRC-1 at the posttranscriptional level and mediates the function of SRC-1 in promoting stemness-like properties of GBM. Steroid receptor coactivator-1 can promote the expression of Kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) through the XIST/microRNA (miR)-152 axis. Additionally, arenobufagin and bufalin, SRC small molecule inhibitors, can reduce the proliferation and stemness of GBM cells. This study reveals SRC-1 promotes the stemness of GBM by activating the long noncoding RNA XIST/miR-152/KLF4 pathway and provides novel markers for diagnosis and therapy of GBM., (© 2020 The Authors. Background: Thyroid cancer incidence has increased substantially over the past decades, and environmental risk factors have been suggested to play a role. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and organochlorine pesticides (OCP) are established thyroid hormone disruptors, but their relationship to thyroid cancer is not known., Methods: We investigated the relationship between serum PCB and OCP concentrations and papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) in 250 incident female PTC cases and 250 female controls frequency-matched on age, all residing in Connecticut. Interviews and serum samples were collected from 2010 to 2013. Samples were analyzed for 32 different chemicals using gas chromatography with isotope dilution high resolution mass spectrometry. We calculated odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) using single pollutant logistic regression models for concentrations (per interquartile range) of individual PCB/OCP and summed groups of structurally or biologically similar PCB/OCP, adjusted for education, family history of cancer, alcohol consumption, age, and body mass index. Sub-analyses included stratification by tumor size (≤ and >1 cm) and birth before or during peak PCB production (born in 1960 or earlier and born after 1960), as exposures during early life may be important. We also applied three multi-pollutant approaches (standard multi-pollutant regression, hierarchical Bayesian modeling, principal components regression analysis) to investigate associations with co-exposures to multiple PCB/OCPs., Results: No PCB/OCPs were positively associated with PTC in primary analyses. Statistically significant associations were observed for 9 of the 32 chemicals and 3 summed groups of similar chemicals in the those born during peak production based on single-pollutant models. Multi-pollutant analyses suggested null associations overall., Conclusions: Our results using single and multi-pollutant modeling do not generally support an association between PCB or OCP exposure and PTC, but some associations in those born during peak production suggest that additional investigation into early-life exposures and subsequent thyroid cancer risk may be warranted., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Inc. A cadmium (Cd) stress test was carried out on Eisenia fetida in artificial soil. Six Cd concentration gradient solutions (0, 50, 100, 125, 250 and 500 mg/kg) were prepared. Two treatment groups, short-term stress and long-term stress, were established. The former lasted for 10 days, and the latter lasted for 30 days. The Biolog ECO-microplate culture method was used to determine the utilization of the 31 carbon sources by the microbes in earthworm homogenate. The total protein content (TP), peroxidase activity (POD), catalase activity (CAT), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), glutathione peroxidase activity (GPX), glutathione-S-transferase activity (GST), malondialdehyde content (MDA) and acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) in earthworm were determined in order to investigate the regulation of oxidative stress and the functional diversity of microbial communities in earthworms under Cd stress. By combining the entropy weight method (EW) and the technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution model (TOPSIS), the physiological functional indices of earthworms were assessed objectively and scientifically, and the physiological changes under the different stress periods were evaluated. The results showed that a Cd-tolerant dominant population appeared in the microbial community under Cd stress. In the short-term test, oxidative stress were more effective in coping with Cd stress than the microbial community, and oxidative stress regulated the microbial community functional diversity. Under long-term Cd stress, the regulatory effect was weak or non-existent. In this study, a new evaluation model was established to explore the regulation process of earthworm on its oxidation stress and the functional diversity of microbial communities under Cd stress, and provide a theoretical basis for revealing the detoxification mechanism of earthworms., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Soil cadmium (Cd) pollution has received increasing attention from scholars. In the field of Cd pollution remediation, there is an urgent need to study the combined bioremediation technology of earthworms and microbes. In this paper, a short-term stress test and a long-term stress test were conducted. Eisenia fetida were inoculated into artificial soil that was contaminated with Cd. After different Cd stress times, the regulation process between the microbial communities in the earthworms and in the soil was studied. Canonical correlation analysis and the TOPSIS method were combined to establish a mathematical model for data analysis, and the changes in the carbon source utilization intensity by microbes were analysed. The results showed that in the short-term stress tests, the regulation process could be divided into five stages. Specifically, after 1-3 days of stress, the microbial community in the earthworms regulated the soil microbial community, but on the 3rd day, the regulation was weakened. On the 4th day, the soil microbial community was affected not only by the microbes in the earthworms but also by the increasing intensity of Cd stress. After 5 days of stress, the microbial communities in the earthworms and the soil were both greatly affected by Cd poisoning, and the microbes transitioned from stable to declining. At 6-7 days, the microbes in the earthworms gained control over those in the soil once again, and the Cd-tolerant microbes began to appear and proliferate. At 8-10 days, the regulation of the soil microbes by the earthworm microbes weakened, while the Cd-tolerant population in the soil microbial communities gradually evolved at this stage to adapt to the increasing Cd stress. The long-term stress tests showed that the difference between the microbial communities in the soil and in the earthworms increased, and there was almost no regulation between them.

The development of a highly active, long-lasting, and cost-effective electrocatalyst as an alternative to platinum (Pt) is a vital issue for the commercialization of dye-sensitized solar cells. In this study, Ru-N-doped template-free mesoporous carbon (Ru-N-TMC) was prepared by the direct stabilization and carbonization of the poly(butyl acrylate)-b-polyacrylonitrile (PBA-b-PAN) block copolymer and ruthenium(iii) acetylacetonate [Ru(acac)3]. During the stabilization process, microphase separation occurred in the PBA-b-PAN block copolymer due to the incompatibility between the two blocks, and the PAN block transformed to N-doped semi-graphitic carbon. In the carbonization step, the PBA block was eliminated as a porous template, creating hierarchal mesopores/micropores. Meanwhile, Ru(acac)3 was decomposed to Ru, which was homogeneously distributed over the carbon substrate and anchored through N and O heteroatoms. The resulting Ru-N-TMC showed ultra-low charge transfer resistance (Rct = 0.034 Ω cm2) in the Co(bipyridine)33+/2+ reduction reaction, indicating very high electrocatalytic ability. Even though it is a transparent counter electrode (CE, average visible transmittance of 42.25%), covering a small fraction of the fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO)/glass substrate with Ru-N-TMC, it led to lower charge transfer resistance (Rct = 0.55 Ω cm2) compared to Pt (Rct = 1.00 Ω cm2). The Ru-N-TMC counter electrode exhibited a superior power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.42% compared to Pt (11.16%) when employed in SGT-021/Co(bpy)33+/2+ based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Furthermore, a remarkable PCE of 10.13% and 8.64% from front and rear illumination, respectively, was obtained when the Ru-N-TMC counter electrode was employed in a bifacial DSSC. The outstanding catalytic activity and PCE of Ru-N-TMC were due to the high surface area of Ru-N-TMC, which contained numerous active species (Ru and N), easily facilitated to redox ions through the hierarchical microporous/mesoporous structure.
