Background/aim: This study investigated the synergistic effects of combining cisplatin and SH003 treatment on the viability, apoptosis, cytotoxicity, migration and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in cisplatin-resistant cancer cell lines YD-8/CIS, YD-9/CIS and YD-38/CIS., Materials and Methods: The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used to assess cell viability, while trypan blue exclusion assay was used to evaluate cytotoxicity. Flow cytometry and western blot analysis measured apoptotic cell death. Wound-healing assays evaluated cell migration and EMT markers. Combination index (CI) plots were used to evaluate the combinatory effects of the treatment., Results: Combination therapy significantly reduced cell viability more effectively than each agent alone, as demonstrated by the MTT assay, with CI plots confirming notable synergism. Trypan blue exclusion assays indicated increased cell death and cytotoxicity in combination treatment than in both monotherapies, although the increase was not significant. Flow cytometry and western blot analysis revealed no significant synergistic effect on apoptotic cell death. However, wound-healing assays revealed that the combination of cisplatin and SH003 significantly inhibited cell migration and regulated EMT markers, indicating the potential reversal of EMT., Conclusion: Combining cisplatin and SH003 therapy may potentially be a more effective strategy for treating cisplatin-resistant cancer by increasing cytotoxicity and inhibiting metastasis. Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) is characterized by bone exposure in the oral and maxillofacial region for more than eight weeks in patients treated with anti-resorptive agents, immunosuppressants, or anti-angiogenic agents, without prior radiation therapy or metastatic disease to the jaws. Conservative treatments can control infection in mild cases, but surgical intervention is necessary for patients with severe symptoms. A 78-year-old female with a history of bisphosphonate treatment for osteoporosis presented with persistent pain, swelling, and malodor following implant placement in the upper right maxilla. SPECT/CT imaging revealed a high-risk hot spot in the right maxillary region. BIS-guided surgery using the Qray pen-C was performed, selectively removing red fluorescent bone tissue. The defect was grafted with HuBT incorporated with rhBMP-2. Postoperative follow-ups at 4, 7, and 14 months showed successful bone healing, transforming into a corticocancellous complex, and implant placement without MRONJ recurrence. Allogeneic demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) incorporated with rhBMP-2 demonstrates effective bone healing and implant placement following BIS-guided MRONJ surgery. This case supports the use of DDM/rhBMP-2 for tissue regeneration in MRONJ treatment, enabling successful prosthetic restoration without recurrence.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of implants placed in horizontally augmented alveolar ridges using porcine bone grafts and to investigate the long-term stability of the porcine bone grafts., Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 49 sites that underwent horizontal ridge augmentation using porcine bone grafts and implant placement with a follow-up period longer than 5 years. Furthermore, additional analysis was conducted on 24 sites where porcine bone grafts were used exclusively for horizontal ridge augmentation and implant placement., Results: The mean follow-up period after prosthesis loading was 67.5 months, with a mean marginal bone loss of 0.23 mm at 1 year and a cumulative mean marginal bone loss of 0.40 mm over the entire follow-up period. Of the 49 implants, 2 were lost and 3 did not meet the success criteria, resulting in a survival rate of 95.9% and a success rate of 89.8%. In 24 sites, the mean marginal bone loss was 0.23 mm at 1 year and 0.41 mm at 65.8 months, with 100% survival and success rates., Conclusion: Porcine bone grafts can be successfully used in horizontal ridge augmentation for implant placement in cases of ridges with insufficient horizontal width.

Objectives: This review assessed the performance of implant-supported fixed hybrid prostheses in 21 patients who received a total of 137 implants between 2003 and 2010. The implants were evaluated for marginal bone resorption, complications, success rate, and survival rate based on their vertical angularity, type of bone graft, and measured implant stability., Materials and Methods: One-way ANOVA and chi-square tests were used to analyze the relationships among long-term evaluation factors and these variables. The mean initial bone resorption in the implant group with a vertical angle of more than 20° was 0.33 mm and mean final bone resorption was 0.76 mm. In contrast, the mean initial bone resorption in the implant group with a vertical angle of less than 10° was 1.19 mm and mean final bone resorption was 2.17 mm., Results: The results showed that mean bone resorption decreased with an increase in the vertical placement angle of the implants used in fixed hybrid prostheses, as well as in the group without additional bone grafts and those with high implant stability. The success rate of implants placed after bone grafting was found to be higher than those placed simultaneously., Conclusion: These results suggest that implant-supported fixed hybrid prostheses may be an effective treatment option for edentulous patients, and intentionally placing implants with high angularity may improve outcomes.

Objectives: This retrospective study aims to compare long-term stability between the mandibular setback surgery-early (MSE) approach, involving minimal orthodontics, and the mandibular setback conventional surgery (MCS) approach, involving sufficient orthodontics, in Class III patients with mandibular prognathism., Methods: Among 210 patients who underwent orthognathic surgery, a total of 40 subjects were enrolled based on standardized inclusion criteria: only mandibular surgery, <5 mm setback difference between right and left of the mandible, orthodontics with fixed appliances, and more than 2 years of follow-up after treatment. These patients were allocated to the MSE (n = 20) and MCS groups (n = 20) according to the duration of presurgical orthodontics. Changes in cephalometric measurements were compared between the MSE and MCS groups before surgery (T0), 1 month after surgery (T1), at the end of treatment (T2), and posttreatment retention (T3)., Results: The MSE and MCS groups had a mean presurgical orthodontic duration of 2 and 9.5 months, respectively. From T1 to T2, the MSE group showed a significantly larger forward movement of the mandible than the MCS group (2.1 versus 0.7 mm; P < 0.001). In addition, from T2 to T3 (average 4.6 years), the MSE group presented anterior relapse of 0.6 mm in the mandible, but there were no statistically significant intergroup differences., Conclusion: Although the MSE group showed greater postsurgical forward mandibular relapse than the MCS group, the two groups exhibited similar skeletal and dental stability during the posttreatment retention., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2023 by Mutaz B. Research regarding bone density assessment using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in low bone density regions is sparse. This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the predictability of CBCT for low bone density regions and its correlations with primary implant stability when placing tapered design implants with a stepped osteotomy. Eighteen porcine mandibular condyles were used as simulated low bone density regions. Hounsfield units (HU), obtained via multislice computed tomography, and gray values (GVs), obtained via CBCT, were measured 3 times at 1-month intervals. The maximum implant insertion torque (MIT) and implant stability quotient (ISQ) were recorded as the taper design implants were placed using a stepped osteotomy. Hounsfield units and GV were measured as 335.05-803.07 and 389.98-906.40, respectively. For repeated measurements of HU and GV, the intraclass correlation coefficients were 0.989 and 0.980; the corresponding value for mean HU and GV was 0.768. Bland-Altman plots showed a mean difference between HU and GV of -78.15. Pearson correlation coefficients revealed a strong correlation between HU and GV (r = 0.91, P < .01). The mean ± SD values for MIT and ISQ were 36.44 ± 6.64 Ncm and 80.85 ± 2.03, respectively, but no statistically significant correlations were found with GV and HU. Within the study's limitations, GV showed similar bone density estimation compared with HU in soft bones. Tapered implant placement with a stepped osteotomy achieved stable primary implant stability in soft bones. However, these in vitro results need to be approved in further clinical studies.

Objectives: The oral microbiome is closely associated with systemic diseases, indicating the presence of bacteremia and inflammatory mediators in the systemic circulation. Our research aims to investigate the relationship between the oral microbiome and other microbial habitats., Methods: We analyzed 180 specimens from 36 patients, including saliva, buccal swab, plaque, stool, and blood samples from a healthy group (Non&#95;PD, n  = 18) and a periodontitis group (PD, n  = 18). The final analysis included 147 specimens, with varying sample sizes for each group. Metagenomic analysis was performed using prokaryotic 16S rRNA on the MiSeq platform (Illumina)., Results: PD saliva showed significant richness differences (P's < 0.05), similar to plaque. Buccal swabs had slight variations. Microbial network analysis revealed altered microbial interactions in the PD group, with decreased interactions in saliva and buccal swabs, and increased interactions in plaque. In our analysis of nine specimens where all paired habitat samples could be analyzed, microorganisms linked to oral periodontitis were found in sterile blood samples, resembling the oral cavity's composition., Conclusions: Microbiome differences should consider overall microbial-environment interactions, alongside diversity and richness. Background: Few trials have compared the results of surgical treatment for peri-implantitis based on severity of peri-implantitis and surgical method. This study investigated the survival rate of implants based on type of surgical method used and initial severity of peri-implantitis. Classification of severity was determined based on bone loss rate relative to fixture length., Methods: Medical records of patients who underwent peri-implantitis surgery from July 2003 to April 2021 were identified. Classification of peri-implantitis was divided into 3 groups (stage 1: bone loss < 25% (of fixture length), stage 2: 25% < bone loss < 50%, stage 3: bone loss > 50%) and performance of resective or regenerative surgery was investigated. Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox hazards proportional models were used to analyze the cumulative survival rate of implants. Median survival time, predicted mean survival time, hazard ratio (HR), and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated., Results: Based on Kaplan-Meier analysis, 89 patients and 227 implants were included, and total median postoperative survival duration was 8.96 years. Cumulative survival rates for stage 1, 2, and 3 were 70.7%, 48.9%, and 21.3%, respectively. The mean survival time for implants in stage 1, 2, and 3 was 9.95 years, 7.96 years, and 5.67 years, respectively, with statistically significant difference (log-rank p-value < 0.001). HRs for stage 2 and stage 3 were 2.25 and 4.59, respectively, with stage 1 as reference. Significant difference was not found in survival time between resective and regenerative surgery groups in any peri-implantitis stage., Conclusions: The initial bone loss rate relative to the fixture length significantly correlated with the outcome after peri-implantitis surgery, demonstrating a notable difference in the long-term survival rate. Difference was not found between resective surgery and regenerative surgery in implant survival time. Bone loss rate could be utilized as a reliable diagnostic tool for evaluating prognosis after surgical treatment, regardless of surgical method used., Trial Registration: Retrospectively registered. Objectives: Ultra-wide implants may be used as a replacement if existing implants fail. This study was conducted to evaluate the factors influencing the prognosis and failure of ultra-wide implants. Patients and., Methods: This study evaluated whether sex, age, site, diameter, length, additional surgery, implant stability (primary and secondary), and reason for ultra-wide implant placement affect the 5-year survival and success rates and marginal bone loss (MBL) of ultra-wide implants. Seventy-eight ultra-wide implants that were placed in 71 patients (39 males and 32 females) from 2008 to 2010 were studied. One-way ANOVA analysis was conducted to evaluate the statistical significance of MBL according to the patient's sex, implant site, and diameter. Independent sample t -tests were used to determine the statistical significance of MBL analysis which was used to determine the significance of the 5-year success and survival rates related to the variables. One-way ANOVA was conducted to evaluate the statistical significance of sex, implantation site, diameter, and MBL. Independent sample t -tests were used to evaluate the correlation between implantability and MBL for implantation reasons, while additional surgery, length, and Kaplan-Meier analysis were used to evaluate 5-year survival and success rates., Results: The mean age of patients was 54.2 years with a survival rate of 92.3% and a success rate of 83.3% over a mean 97.8-month period of observation. MBL averaged 0.2 mm after one year of prosthetic function loading and 0.54 mm at the time of final observation. Success rates correlated with primary stability ( P =0.045), survival rates correlated with secondary stability ( P =0.036), and MBL did not correlate with any variables., Conclusion: Ultra-wide implants can be used to achieve secure initial fixation in the maxillary and mandibular molar regions with poor bone quality or for alternative purposes in cases of previous implant failure.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of two types of sandblasted with large-grit and acid-etched (SLA) surface implants with different surface roughness. Patients and., Methods: This study was conducted based on a clinical record review of 55 patients (mean age, 53.00 years). A total of 80 SLA surface implants was placed. Among the 80 implants, 38 implants placed in 29 subjects had surface roughness (Ra) of 3.09 μm (test group, TG), while the other 42 implants placed in 31 subjects had a surface roughness (Ra) of 2.50 μm (control group, CG). A comparison was made of implant primary/ secondary stability; success and survival rates; marginal bone loss; and soft tissue assessment including probing pocket depth (PPD), plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), and bleeding on probing (BOP) between the groups at 1 year after implant placement., Results: Among the implants that were initially registered, 1 from the TG and 4 from the CG dropped out, leaving 37 implants in the TG and 38 implants in the CG to be traced and analyzed. Although 1 TG case showed unstable primary stability, all cases showed stable secondary stability. Success and survival rates at 1 year after implant placement were 100% in both groups. Marginal bone loss was 0.07 mm and 0.00 mm for the TG and CG, respectively, but the difference was not significant. Among the several parameters for evaluation of soft tissue, the TG showed lower PI at 1 year after implant placement (TG=0.00, CG=0.29; P =0.0004), while the remaining categories showed no significant difference between the groups., Conclusion: This study shows that the two types of SLA implants with different surface roughness have no difference in efficacy or safety. Therefore, both of the implants can be used safely and with promising outcomes.

Cisplatin-based chemotherapy has been effectively used to treat oral cancer, but treatment often fails owing to the development of drug resistance. However, the important gene expression alterations associated with these resistances remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to identify the gene expressions related to cisplatin resistance in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines. RNA samples were obtained from three cisplatin-resistant (YD-8/CIS, YD-9/CIS, and YD-38/CIS) and -sensitive (YD-8, YD-9, and YD-38) cell lines. Global gene expression was analyzed using RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq). Differentially expressed genes were determined. Based on the gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases, functional enrichment and signaling pathways analyses were performed. Candidate genes selected from RNA-Seq analysis were validated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis. The YD-8/CIS and YD-9/CIS samples had very similar expression patterns. qRT-PCR analysis was performed on selected genes commonly expressed between the two samples. The expression levels of 11 genes were changed in cisplatin-resistant samples compared with their parental samples; several of these genes were related to cell adhesion molecules and proteoglycans in cancer pathways. Our data provide candidate genes associated with cisplatin resistance in OSCC, but further study is required to determine which genes have an important role. Nevertheless, these results may provide new ideas to improve the clinical therapeutic outcomes of OSCC.

This study aimed to evaluate the biomechanical properties in vitro and the bone regeneration of whitlockite (WH) compared with hydroxyapatite (HA) or β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP)-based material. We investigated the morphology and phase composition of the bone grafts using a scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer patterns and tested the compressive strength. Four circular defects of 8 mm in diameter were created on the calvaria of twelve rabbits. One defect was left empty, and each of the other defects was filled with WH, HA, and β-TCP. At 4 and 8 weeks, the specimens were harvested to evaluate for the new bone formation and the remaining bone grafts. Regarding the biomechanical properties, the three grafts had a similar micropore size, and WH showed nanopores. The compressive strength of WH was higher than HA and β-TCP without statistical significance. The radiological and histomorphometric analyses demonstrated that the new bone formation was similar among the groups. The remaining bone graft of the WH group was greater than that of the HA and β-TCP groups at 4 weeks (p < 0.05), and the total bone area of the WH, HA, and β-TCP groups was greater than that of the other (p < 0.01). WH has excellent volumetric stability and osteoconductivity compared with HA and β-TCP.

Demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) treated with gamma irradiation (GR) has shown promising results as an allograft without any adverse effects in in vivo and clinical studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of 15 and 25 kGy GR on the osteoinductive properties of DDM at extra-skeletal sites. As a control group, non-irradiated DDM powder was implanted into the right subcutaneous tissues of the dorsal thigh muscles of 20 nude mice. DDM powder irradiated with 15 and 25 kGy was implanted into the left side. After two and four weeks, the bone mineral density (BMD) was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. After confirming osteoblast- and osteoclast-specific activities by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining, a histological analysis was performed to measure the new bone formation and the number of osteoblasts and osteoclast-like cells on the surface of the DDMs. Histomorphometry was used to calculate the new bone formation area on the surface of the DDM particles (DDMs). The BMD in all the groups increased from two and four weeks without statistically significant differences. The osteoblasts were dominantly activated on DDM without GR, and DDM treated with 25 kGy compared to DDM treated with 15 kGy. Among the groups, new bone formation was identified in all the groups at each time point. In conclusion, GR at doses of 15 and 25 kGy does not affect the osteoinductive properties of DDM powder.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of virtual planning of computer-guided surgery based on the actual outcomes of clinical dental implant placement., Methods: This retrospective study enrolled patients among whom implant treatment was planned using computer-guided surgery with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The patients who received implant according to the guide with the flapless and flapped approach were classified as group 1 and 2, respectively, and the others who could not be placed according to the guide were allocated to the drop-out group. The accuracy of implant placement was evaluated with the superimposition of CBCT., Results: We analyzed differences in the deviated distance of the entrance point and deviated angulation of the insertion of implant fixtures. With regard to the surgical approach, group 2 exhibited greater accuracy compared to group 1 in deviation distance (2.22 ± 0.88 and 3.18 ± 0.89 mm, respectively, P < 0.001) and angulation (4.27 ± 2.30 and 6.82 ± 2.71°, respectively, P = 0.001). The limitations of guided surgery were discussed while considering the findings from the drop-out group., Conclusions: Computer-guided surgery demonstrates greater accuracy in implant placement with the flapless approach. Cisplatin is among the most widely used anticancer drugs used in the treatment of several malignancies, including oral cancer. However, cisplatin treatment often promotes chemical resistance, subsequently causing treatment failure. Several studies have shown that epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs) play a variety of roles in cancer progression and overcoming cisplatin resistance. Therefore, this study focused on EGFR inhibitors used in novel targeted therapies as a method to overcome this resistance. We herein aimed to determine whether the combined effects of cisplatin and cetuximab could enhance cisplatin sensitivity by inhibiting the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) process in cisplatin-resistant cells. In vitro analyses of three cisplatin-resistant oral squamous cell carcinoma cells, which included cell proliferation assay, combination index calculation, cell cytotoxicity assay, live/dead cell count assay, Western blot assay, propidium iodide staining assay, scratch assay, and qRT-PCR assay were then conducted. Our results showed that a cisplatin/cetuximab combination treatment inhibited cell proliferation, cell motility, and N-cadherin protein expression but induced E-cadherin and claudin-1 protein expression. Although the combination of cisplatin and cetuximab did not induce apoptosis of cisplatin-resistant cells, it may be useful in treating oral cancer patients with cisplatin resistance given that it controls cell motility and EMT-related proteins.

Objectives: In this prospective randomized controlled trial, we measured the primary and secondary stability of two surface-treated implants placed in the posterior maxilla, applied 3-month loading protocols, and compared and analyzed the short-term outcomes of the implants., Patients and Methods: : From June 2018 to June 2019, patients with a residual bone height of 4 mm in the posterior maxilla were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups to place SA implants (Osstem Implants, Korea) in Group A and NH implants (Hiossen, USA) in Group B. Finally, 14 implants placed in 13 patients in Group A and 17 implants placed in 14 patients in Group B were analyzed. The measured primary and secondary stability of each implant was represented by implant stability quotient (ISQ), and treatment outcomes were evaluated., Results: : Group A consisted of patients with an average age of 62.2 years (range, 48-80 years), and Group B consisted of patients with an average age of 58.1 years (range, 35-82 years). Primary stability was 73.86±6.40 and 71.24±5.32 in Groups A and B, respectively ( P =0.222). Secondary stability was 79.07±5.21 in Group A and 78.29±4.74 in Group B ( P =0.667). A steep increase in ISQ during the healing period was observed in Group B, though it was not significant ( P =0.265). The mean follow-up period was 378.5±164.6 days in Group A and 385.3±167.9 days in Group B. All implants in each group met the success criteria, and the success rate was 100%., Conclusion: Two surface-treated implants placed in the posterior maxilla with greater than 4 mm alveolar bone height exhibited successful one-year treatment outcomes if a primary stability of 65 or higher ISQ was obtained and a 3-month early loading protocol was applied.

Background: We previously reported similar efficacies of alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) on single extraction socket with two different E. coli derived recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) delivery systems (Cowell BMP, Cowell medi Co, Busan, Korea; β-tricalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite particle & O-BMP, Osstem Implant Co, Busan, Korea; absorbable collagen sponge). After the trial, we completed implant therapy and observed over an average of 3 years. This follow-up study was performed retrospectively to compare result of implant treatment at the preserved alveolar ridge site., Methods: Patients who underwent extraction of single tooth and received ARP with one of two rhBMP-2 delivery systems from October 2015 to October 2016 were enrolled. Twenty-eight patients (Group 1: Cowell BMP 14; Group 2: O-BMP 14) who underwent implant therapy and prosthetic treatment were included in study. Stability and marginal bone loss (MBL) of each implant were collected from medical charts and radiographs, and analyzed. The survival and success rates of implants were calculated., Results: The primary implant stability represented by implant stability quotient (ISQ) for Groups 1 and 2 was 69.71 and 72.86, respectively. The secondary implant stability for Groups 1 and 2 was 78.86 and 81.64, respectively. Primary and secondary stabilities were not statistically different (P = 0.316 and 0.185, respectively). MBL at the latest follow-up was 0.014 mm in Group 1 over 33.76 ± 14.31 months and 0.021 mm in Group 2 over 40.20 ± 9.64 months, with no significant difference (P = 0.670). In addition, the success rate of implants was 100% (14/14) in Group 1 and 92.9% (13/14) in Group 2, with survival rate of 100% (14/14) in Group 1 and 92.9% (13/14) in Group 2., Conclusions: We confirmed good prognosis in both groups as a result of implant therapy after ARP with each of two rhBMP-2 carriers.

Background: Occlusal stress from oral parafunctional habits is one of the causes of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and mandibular torus (MT). Although some studies have investigated the correlation between TMD and MT, understanding of the relationships between types of TMD and MT is insufficient. Therefore, we conducted this study to investigate the associations between presence of MT and TMD types., Methods: This study included 77 patients diagnosed with TMD who first visited our clinic for TMD between March 2019 and July 2020. Among them, 30 (38.9%) had MT, and 54 (70.1%) had oral parafunction. Parafunctional activity during sleep was confirmed using a temporary splint for checking bruxism (TSCB)., Results: The relationship between prevalence of MT and oral parafunction in TMD patients was not statistically significant (P = 0.131), but the odds ratio was relatively high at 2.267. An analysis of TMD type revealed that Type I, which is classified as myalgia of the masticatory muscles, and MT had a significant association (P = 0.011). We fabricated a TSCB for 27 patients to wear during sleep and confirmed that 23 (85.2%) had nocturnal bruxism. The TSCB results and presence of MT showed a significant relationship (P = 0.047)., Conclusion: Through the results of this study, clinicians may consider the hyperactivity of masticatory muscles in the presence of MT when treating TMD patients. In addition, TSCB has a great diagnostic value as it can be easily manufactured and be useful for discovering pre-existing oral parafunctions that patients are not aware of.

Objectives: To evaluate the linear, angular, and volumetric changes of soft tissue after clockwise repositioning of the maxillo-mandibular complex in skeletal class III patients using three-dimensional (3D) stereophotogrammetry and to determine the correlation between changes in the skeletal and soft tissue variables., Methods: This study included 18 skeletal class III patients who underwent two-jaw surgery; superior impaction and clockwise rotational movement of the maxilla with the rotation center at upper incisors, and setback of the mandible. Lateral cephalograms and 3D photographs taken before and 6 months after surgery were compared., Results: After maxillary impaction of anteriorly 1.7 mm and posteriorly 3.1 mm, and mandibular setback of 8.7 mm, the volume of lower lip and chin region decreased significantly by 33.6 cm3 (13% net change, P < 0.001), while paranasal and upper lip region volume increased by 3.2 cm3 (2%) and 7.2 cm3 (4%), respectively., Conclusion: The clockwise rotation of maxillo-mandibular complex in class III patients significantly reduced lower lip and chin volume with minimal increase in paranasal and upper lip volumes. 3D stereophotogrammetry can provide quantitative evaluation of facial soft tissue volumetric changes., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2020 by Mutaz B. Cisplatin and paclitaxel are commonly used to treat oral cancer, but their use is often limited because of acquired drug resistance. Here, we tested the effects of combined cisplatin and paclitaxel on three parental (YD-8, YD-9, and YD-38) and three cisplatin-resistant (YD-8/CIS, YD-9/CIS, and YD-38/CIS) oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines using cell proliferation assays and combination index analysis. We detected forkhead box protein M1 (FOXM1) mRNA and protein expression via real-time qPCR and Western blot assays. Cell death of the cisplatin-resistant cell lines in response to these drugs with or without a FOXM1 inhibitor (forkhead domain inhibitory compound 6) was then measured by propidium iodide staining and TdT dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assays. In all six OSCC cell lines, cell growth was more inhibited by paclitaxel alone than combination therapy. Cisplatin-induced overexpression of FOXM1 showed the same trend only in cisplatin-resistant cell lines, indicating that it was associated with inhibition of paclitaxel-related apoptosis. In summary, these results suggest that, in three cisplatin-resistant cell lines, the combination of cisplatin and paclitaxel had an antagonistic effect, likely because cisplatin blocks paclitaxel-induced apoptosis. Cisplatin-induced FOXM1 overexpression may explain the failure of this combination.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of biodegradable polycaprolactone membrane on new bone formation and the biodegradation of biphasic alloplastic bone substitutes using animal models., Materials and Methods: In this study, bony defect was formed at the canine mandible of 8 mm in diameter, and the defects were filled with Osteon II. The experimental groups were covered with Osteoguide as barrier membrane, and the control groups were closed without membrane coverage. The proportion of new bone and residual bone graft material was measured histologically and histomorphometrically at postoperative 4 and 8 weeks., Results: At 4 weeks, the new bone proportion was similar between the groups. The proportion of remaining graft volume was 27.58 ± 6.26 and 20.01 ± 4.68% on control and experimental groups, respectively ( P < 0.05). Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical stability of implants with acid-etched surfaces sandblasted with alumina using retrospective analyses of the survival rate, success rate, primary and secondary stability, complications, and marginal bone loss of the implants., Methods: Patients who had implants placed (TS III SA, SS II SA, SS III SA, and U III SA) with SA surfaces from Osstem (Osstem Implant Co., Busan, Korea) at the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, from January 2008 to December 2010 were selected for the study. Patients' medical records and radiographs (panorama, periapical view) were retrospectively analyzed to investigate sex, age, location of implantation, diameter, and length of the implants, initial and secondary stability, presence of bone grafting, types of bone grafting and membranes, early and delayed complications, marginal bone loss, and implant survival rate., Results: Ninety-six implants were placed in 45 patients. Five implants were removed during the follow-up period for a total survival rate of 94.8%. There were 14 cases of complications, including 6 cases of early complications and 8 cases of delayed complications. All five implants that failed to survive were included in the early complications. The survival of implants was significantly associated with the occurrence of complications and the absorption of bone greater than 1 mm within 1 year after prosthetic completion. In addition, the absorption of bone greater than 1 mm within 1 year after prosthetic completion was significantly associated with the occurrence of complications, primary stability, and implant placement method. Five cases that failed to survive were all included in the early complications criteria such as infection, failure of initial osseointegration, and early exposure of the fixture., Conclusions: Of the 96 cases, 5 implants failed resulting in a 94.8% survival rate. The failed implants were all cases of early complications such as infection, failure of initial osseointegration, and early exposure of the fixtures. Peri-implantitis was mostly addressed through conservative and/or surgical treatment and resulted in very low prosthetic complications. Background: The manufacturing of the demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) has been proven to extensively reduce the presence of human hepatitis B viral DNA (HBV DNA). This study measured and compared HBV DNA in fresh dentin to that in gamma radiation (GR)-sterilized dentin extracted from HBV-infected patients. The application of GR as a means of terminal sterilization is hypothesized to inactivate or eliminate HBV within the dentin matrix., Methods: Dentin from 18 HBV-infected patients was collected and divided into three fragments. The first fragment was unaltered and used as the control group; the remaining two fragments were sterilized with gamma radiation doses of 15 or 25 kGy. DNA was extracted and purified from each fresh (control), and the GR-sterilized (experimental) dentin specimen and HBV DNA copy numbers were evaluated on the basis of the real-time polymerase chain reaction. The copy numbers were used to assess GR efficacy as a means of terminal sterilization for HBV inactivation or elimination., Results: HBV DNA was detected in 66.67% of the fresh dentin specimens. The differences in HBV DNA levels between the fresh dentin and the GR-sterilized dentin were confirmed by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for the doses of 15 and 25 kGy with P value of 0.012 and 0.010, respectively. Among the twelve HBV-DNA-positive fresh dentin samples, HBV DNA persisted in eleven after GR sterilization, yet the copy number was reduced to <10 (except for a single sample within each experimental group)., Conclusions: The results suggest that 15 and 25 kGy of GR significantly reduced the HBV DNA levels in the fresh dentin matrix. Background: This study aims to examine the outcome of simultaneous maxillary sinus lifting, bone grafting, and vertical ridge augmentation through retrospective studies., Methods: From 2005 to 2010, patients with exhibited severe alveolar bone loss received simultaneous sinus lifting, bone grafting, and vertical ridge augmentations were selected. Fifteen patients who visited in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital were analyzed according to clinical records and radiography. Postoperative complications; success and survival rate of implants; complications of prosthesis; implant stability quotient (ISQ); vertical resorption of grafted bone after 1, 2, and 3 years after surgery; and final observation and marginal bone loss were evaluated., Results: The average age of the patients was 54.2 years. Among the 33 implants, six failed to survive and succeed, resulting in an 81.8% survival rate and an 81.8% success rate. Postoperative complications were characterized by eight cases of ecchymosis, four cases of exposure of the titanium mesh or membrane, three cases of peri-implantitis, three cases of hematoma, two cases of sinusitis, two cases of fixture fracture, one case of bleeding, one case of numbness, one case of trismus, and one case of fixture loss. Prosthetic complications involved two instances of screw loosening, one case of abutment fracture, and one case of food impaction. Resorption of grafted bone material was 0.23 mm after 1 year, 0.47 mm after 2 years, 0.41 mm after 3 years, and 0.37 mm at the final observation. Loss of marginal bone was 0.12 mm after 1 year, and 0.20 mm at final observation., Conclusions: When sinus lifting, bone grafting, and vertical ridge augmentation were performed simultaneously, postoperative complications increased, and survival rates were lower. Cisplatin is one of the major drugs used in oral cancer treatments, but its usage can be limited by acquired drug resistance. In this study, we established three cisplatin-resistant oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines and characterized them using cell viability assays, qPCR, Western blotting, FACS, immunofluorescence, and wound healing assays. Three OSCC cell lines (YD-8, YD-9, and YD-38) underwent long-term exposure to cisplatin, eventually acquiring resistance to the drug, which was confirmed by an MTT assay. In these three newly established cell lines (YD-8/CIS, YD-9/CIS, and YD-38/CIS), overexpression of multidrug resistance (MDR)-related genes was detected by qPCR and Western blotting. The cell lines displayed an increase in the functional activities of breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) and multidrug resistance protein1 (MDR1) by rhodamine 123 and bodipy FL prazosin accumulation assays. Moreover, the cisplatin-resistant cells underwent morphological changes, from round to spindle-shaped, increased expression of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related molecules such as N-cadherin, and showed increased cell migration when compared with the parental cell lines. These results suggest that these newly established cell lines have acquired drug resistance and EMT induction.

Demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) has been used as a recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) carrier in many clinical trials. To optimize the clinical safety and efficacy of rhBMP-2 with DDM, efforts have been made to improve the delivery of rhBMP-2 by 1) lowering the administered dose, 2) localizing the protein, and 3) prolonging its retention time at the action site as well as the bone forming capacity of the carrier itself. The release profile of rhBMP-2 that is associated with endogenous BMP in dentin has been postulated according to the type of incorporation, which is attributed to the loosened interfibrillar space and nanoporous dentinal tubule pores. Physically adsorbed and modified, physically entrapped rhBMP-2 is sequentially released from the DDM surface during the early stage of implantation. As DDM degradation progresses, the loosened interfibrillar space and enlarged dentinal tubules release the entrapped rhBMP-2. Finally, the endogenous BMP in dentin is released with osteoclastic dentin resorption. According to the postulated release profile, DDM can therefore be used in a controlled manner as a sequential delivery scaffold for rhBMP-2, thus sustaining the rhBMP-2 concentration for a prolonged period due to localization. Purpose: The aims of this study were to compare the presurgical conditions, surgical changes, and postsurgical changes in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion with different degrees of horizontal relapse after mandibular setback surgery (MS) with minimal presurgical orthodontics (MPO) and to identify the factors contributing to this relapse., Materials and Methods: For this retrospective study, 33 consecutive patients who underwent MS-MPO were selected. Lateral cephalograms were taken preoperatively (T0), 1 month after surgery (T1), and at orthodontic debonding (T2). Patients were divided into low relapse (LR; n = 18; relapse, <1 mm) and high relapse (HR; n = 15; relapse, >2 mm) groups based on the cephalometric distance of mandibular horizontal relapse. Paired t test, independent t test, and Pearson correlation analysis were used to evaluate surgical (T0 to T1) and postsurgical (T1 to T2) changes in the skeletodental variables and to explore the relation between surgical changes and horizontal relapse., Results: Compared with the LR group, the HR group exhibited more upward movement with counterclockwise rotation of the mandible from T1 to T2. The HR group presented at T0 with a more prognathic mandible, greater vertical facial height, and a positive overbite. In addition, the HR group presented more posterior movement with clockwise rotation of the mandible, increased overjet, and decreased overbite from T0 to T1. Aims: Oral health problems such as periodontal disease, dental caries, and tooth loss have been suggested to have associations with cardiovascular disease. This study aimed to evaluate whether oral hygiene behaviour can alleviate cardiovascular risk associated with oral health status using a nationwide population-based cohort., Methods and Results: The data of 247 696 healthy adults aged 40 years or older who underwent an oral health screening programme and had no history of major cardiovascular events were extracted from the National Health Insurance System-National Health Screening Cohort. After a median follow-up of 9.5 years, 14 893 major cardiovascular events occurred including cardiac death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure. The risk of cardiovascular events was higher when a subject had periodontal disease, a higher number of dental caries, or more tooth loss. Performing one more tooth brushing a day was associated with a 9% significantly lower risk of cardiovascular events after multivariable adjustment. Regular dental visits (once a year or more) for professional cleaning were also shown to reduce cardiovascular risk by 14%. Improved oral hygiene behaviours were shown to attenuate the cardiovascular risk originating from periodontal disease, dental caries, and tooth loss., Conclusion: Oral hygiene care such as frequent tooth brushing and regular dental visits for professional cleaning reduced the risk of future cardiovascular events in healthy adults. As dental implant surgery and bone grafts were widely operated in Korean dentist, many bone substitutes are commercially available, currently. For commercially used in Korea, all bone substitutes are firstly evaluated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) for safety and efficacy of the product. After being priced, classified, and registration by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA), the post-application management is obligatory for the manufacturer (or representative importer) to receive a certificate of Good Manufacturing Practice by Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Currently, bone substitutes are broadly classified into C group (bone union and fracture fixation), T group (human tissue), L group (general and dental material) and non-insurance material group in MOHW notification No. 2018-248. Among them, bone substitutes classified as dental materials (L7) are divided as xenograft and alloplastic bone graft. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the synergistic apoptotic effect of CKD-602 in combination with cisplatin on different p53 statuses of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines, YD-8, YD-9, and YD-38. MTT assays were used to evaluate the inhibitory effect of the treatments modality on cell growth. The combination index was calculated using CompuSyn software. Detection of cell death was carried out using the propidium iodide (PI)/RNase staining assay, Annexin V/PI double staining assay, and Western blotting. Combination treatment using CKD-602 and cisplatin inhibited proliferation and increased the apoptotic effect on the three OSCC cell lines. Apoptotic cell death was detected in the cell lines, and significant synergistic effects of CKD-602 in combination with cisplatin were observed despite the differences in p53 status. From these results, it was suggested that the combination of CKD-602 with cisplatin might be a potential therapeutic strategy for OSCC. In particular, cell line-specific therapy is necessary because of the differences in treatment response based on p53 status.

Purpose: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic oral mucosal disease that has been recognized as an immune condition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors affecting the clinical outcomes of topical corticosteroid application on OLP lesions using dexamethasone gargle and ointment., Methods: The charts of patients who were clinically diagnosed with OLP and treated with dexamethasone from July 2003 to August 2017 at the Section of Dentistry of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital were thoroughly evaluated to identify subjects who were suitable for this retrospective study. For each patient, age at the index date, gender, medical history, and dental records related to OLP lesions and dexamethasone treatment were reviewed., Results: In total, 113 of the 225 patients were included in the present study. Among them, 79 patients were female (69.9%) and 34 were male (30.1%), with a mean age of 57.6 years. The average duration of dexamethasone treatment was 4.7 months and the mean follow-up period was 2.24 years. Improvements were observed within 1 year after dexamethasone treatment in most cases, and 17.7% of patients had a new OLP lesion after treatment. New OLP lesions were more frequently gingival than mucosal, although mucosal OLP lesions were more common than gingival OLP lesions in all age groups. In age- and gender-adjusted multivariate logistic regression, a history of malignant disease was found to be a significant factor affecting the formation of new lesions. Gingival OLP lesions and intermittent use of dexamethasone showed near-significant associations. In Kaplan-Meier failure analysis, history of malignancy, menopausal status, age, and the site of the OLP lesion were significant factors affecting clinical outcomes., Conclusions: The treatment outcomes of OLP were significantly influenced by age, history of malignancy, menopausal status, and the site of the OLP lesion, but not by factors related to dexamethasone treatment., Competing Interests: Conflict of Interest: No potential conflict of interest relevant to this article was reported.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of treatment of non-odontogenic atypical orofacial pain using botulinum toxin-A., Methods: This study involved seven patients (seven females, mean age 65.1 years) who had non-odontogenic orofacial pain (neuropathic pain and atypical orofacial pain) and visited the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital between 2015 and 2017. All medication therapies were preceded by botulinum toxin-A injections, followed by injections in the insignificant effects of medication therapies. Five of the seven patients received intraoral injections in the gingival vestibule or mucosa, while the remaining two received extraoral injections in the masseter and temporal muscle areas., Results: In five of the seven patients, pain after botulinum toxin-A injection was significantly reduced. Most of the patients who underwent surgery for dental implantation or facial nerve reconstruction recovered after injections. However, the pain did not disappear in two patients who reported experiencing persistent pain without any cause., Conclusions: The use of botulinum toxin-A for the treatment of non-odontogenic neuropathic orofacial pain is clinically useful. Purpose: The goal of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of single short implants, less than 8 mm in length, placed in the posterior area., Materials and Methods: A total of 128 patients (75 male and 53 female, mean age: 52.6±11.2 years) with 154 implants participated. Implant marginal bone loss, and survival and success rates were measured., Results: The mean follow-up period was 51.35±24.97 months. A total of 128 implants, 8 mm in length, were placed in patients who had mean marginal bone loss of 0.75 mm. These implants had a survival rate of 95.3%. Twenty-six implants, 7 mm in length, were placed in areas with a mean marginal bone loss of 0.78 mm and had a survival rate of 96.2%. Both marginal bone loss and survival rate were not statistically different among the groups. In the maxilla, 34 implants showed a mean marginal bone loss of 0.77 mm and a survival rate of 97.1%. In the mandible, 120 implants showed a mean marginal bone loss of 0.75 mm and a survival rate of 95.0%. The average marginal bone loss around all implants was 0.76±0.27 mm at the last follow-up review after functional loading. The survival rate was 95.6% and success rate was 93.5%., Conclusion: In our study, single short implants less than 8 mm in length in the posterior areas had favorable clinical outcomes.

Background: The goal of this study is to evaluate complication and effectiveness of alveolar ridge augmentations using a hydroxyapatite-based alloplastic bony substitute with rhBMP-2., Methods: A total of 10 patients (4 males, 6 females; 58.5 ± 8.6 years) participated in this clinical research. Alveolar ridge augmentations were performed in edentulous (4 maxillary posterior, 5 mandibular posterior, and 1 mandibular anterior) regions. Anorganic bovine bone (ABB; Bio-Oss®, Geistlich Pharma AG, Wolhusen, Switzerland) was used as the bone graft material in the control group ( n  = 5)) while hydroxyapatite-based alloplastic bony substitute with rhBMP-2(HA+rhBMP-2; NOVOSIS®-Dent, CGBio Inc., Seongnam, Korea) was used in the experimental group ( n  = 5). In order to evaluate relative changes in bone volume and resorption rate of the bone graft material, CBCT radiographs were taken immediately and at 4 months after the bone graft in all subjects. Among the 10 patients, 8 received dental implants in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, while the others received in local clinics. Bone specimens for further histomorphometric examinations were gained from these 8 patients using trephine burs during the implant placements. Clinical, radiographic, and histomorphometric evaluations were focused because of the small sample size., Results: When CBCT radiographs were compared between immediately and at 4.07 ± 0.13 months after the bone graft, both alveolar bone widths (ABB 2.52 ± 0.18 mm, HA+rhBMP-2 1.75  ±  0.85 mm) and heights (ABB 1.68 ± 0.17 mm, HA+rhBMP-2 1.57 ± 0.28 mm) increased in the two groups. Resorption rates of transplanted bone graft material in the alveolar bone widths and heights were (ABB 29.7 ± 8.8%, HA+rhBMP-2 31.5 ± 7.4%) and (ABB 39.2 ± 21.8%, HA+rhBMP-2 52.6 ± 6.5%), respectively. Histomorphometrically, ABB group showed bone formation via osteoconduction and HA+rhBMP-2 group via osteoinduction. HA+rhBMP-2 group showed more bone formation around the bone graft materials than the ABB group. Postoperative complications were not found in all subjects., Conclusions: Our study had following conclusions: (1) Ridge augmentations using HA+rhBMP-2 could be clinically useful to supplement implant placements in edentulous regions. Background: Socket sealing surgery is performed for the preservation of the form and volume of the soft tissue by covering the resulting socket with autogenous soft tissue graft or membrane barriers. This procedure is usually necessary to improve the esthetic results of the maxillary anterior or premolar areas., Methods: This study retrospectively investigated cases involving the open membrane technique or socket sealing surgery with a palatal gingival graft or collagen membrane where implant placement and bone grafting were performed immediately after tooth extraction. From January 2005 to December 2008, socket sealing surgery was performed in 24 patients, and 25 implants were placed., Results: All implants were successful in the follow-up period. In the palatal gingival graft group, the mean marginal bone loss was 1.17 mm during the mean follow-up period of 81.0 months. In the collagen membrane group, the mean marginal bone loss was 1.23 mm during the mean follow-up period of 76.9 months. Background: The surgical extraction of the third molar is the most frequently encountered procedure in oral and maxillofacial surgery and is related with a variety of complications. This study examined the efficacy of intentional partial odontectomy (IPO) in the third molars which have no periapical lesions and are located near important anatomical structures such as inferior alveolar nerve., Methods: Seven patients (four males, three females, 39.1 ± 11.6 years), who received IPO to reduce the risk of inferior alveolar nerve injury (IANI), were followed long-term. The treated teeth were horizontally impacted third molars in the mandibular left ( n  = 5) or mandibular right ( n  = 4) areas and were all ankylosed with the surrounding alveolar bone. During the IPO, the bone around the crown was removed to expose the crown, and then the tooth was resected at cement-enamel junction (CEJ). Any secondary trauma to the healthy root was minimized and remained intact after primary suture., Results: The mean follow-up time was 63.2 ± 29.8 months, and all sites showed good bone healing after the crown removal. Also, sensory abnormality was not found in any patients after IPO. In one patient, the bone fragments erupted 4 months after IPO. In other patient, an implant placed on second molar site adjacent to the third molar that received IPO was explanted about 2 years after the patient's persistent discomfort., Conclusions: In case where high risk of IANI exists, IPO may be chosen alternatively to surgical extraction to reduce the risk of nerve damage.

Purpose: A novel index, the periodontal inflamed surface area (PISA), represents the sum of the periodontal pocket depth of bleeding on probing (BOP)-positive sites. In the present study, we evaluated correlations between PISA and periodontal classifications, and examined PISA as an index integrating the discrete conventional periodontal indexes., Methods: This study was a cross-sectional subgroup analysis of data from a prospective cohort study investigating the association between chronic periodontitis and the clinical features of ankylosing spondylitis. Data from 84 patients without systemic diseases (the control group in the previous study) were analyzed in the present study., Results: PISA values were positively correlated with conventional periodontal classifications (Spearman correlation coefficient=0.52; P <0.01) and with periodontal indexes, such as BOP and the plaque index (PI) ( r =0.94; P <0.01 and r =0.60; P <0.01, respectively; Pearson correlation test). Porphyromonas gingivalis ( P. gingivalis ) expression and the presence of serum P. gingivalis antibodies were significant factors affecting PISA values in a simple linear regression analysis, together with periodontal classification, PI, bleeding index, and smoking, but not in the multivariate analysis. In the multivariate linear regression analysis, PISA values were positively correlated with the quantity of current smoking, PI, and severity of periodontal disease., Conclusions: PISA integrates multiple periodontal indexes, such as probing pocket depth, BOP, and PI into a numerical variable. Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare treatment time and skeletal stability between mandibular setback surgery (MS) and 2-jaw surgery (2J) with minimal presurgical orthodontics (MPO) in patients with skeletal Class III., Materials and Methods: One hundred ninety-five patients who underwent orthognathic surgery were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. Consecutive patients were selected based on standardized inclusion criteria: Class III malocclusion with mandibular prognathism, surgery type, and presurgical orthodontics with non-extraction for less than 6 months (MPO). Lateral cephalograms were taken before surgery (T0), 1 month after surgery (T1), and at debonding (T2). To evaluate surgical changes (T0 to T1) and postsurgical changes (T1 to T2) in skeletodental tissue, linear, angular, and dental measurements were analyzed using paired t test and independent t test., Results: Thirty-one patients were allocated to the MS-MPO group (n = 16) and the 2J-MPO group (n = 15). The 2J-MPO group showed a shorter duration of postsurgical orthodontic and total surgical and orthodontic treatment than the MS-MPO group. Although the 2J-MPO group exhibited advancement and superior impaction of the maxilla from T0 to T1, posterior movement with clockwise rotation of the mandible between the 2 groups did not show a statistical difference. In addition, from T1 to T2, the MS-MPO and 2J-MPO groups presented forward and upward movement and counterclockwise rotation of the mandible, but no intergroup difference was found., Conclusions: The MS-MPO and 2J-MPO groups showed similar horizontal and vertical mandibular stability. Objective: This study evaluated the stress distribution of the sliding plate (SP) and conventional miniplate (CM) fixation techniques of a sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) using 3-dimensional (3-D) finite element analysis., Study Design: Four 3-D finite element models according to the number and shape of screw holes in the plate were simulated, and the von Mises stress was analyzed: SP with 2 round and 2 oval holes (SP-2 R2 O), SP with 2 round and 1 oval holes (SP-2 R1 O), CM with 4 round holes (CM-4 R), and CM with 3 round holes (CM-3 R)., Results: The fixation technique with CM-4 R showed a better stress distribution than CM-3 R, which in turn showed better results compared to the 2 different SPs. SP-2 R2 O showed the worst stress distribution in the bone and fixation components., Conclusions: The results suggest that the SP-2 R2 O technique increases the stress distribution of the plate and screws, which may reduce the stability of fixation after SSRO., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the anti-cancer activity of cisplatin by studying its effects on cell viability and identifying the mechanisms underlying the induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines with varying p53 mutation status., Materials and Methods: Three OSCC cell lines, YD-8 (p53 point mutation), YD-9 (p53 wild type), and YD-38 (p53 deletion) were used. To determine the cytotoxic effect of cisplatin, MTS assay was performed. The cell cycle alteration and apoptosis were analyzed using flow cytometry. Western blot analysis was used to detect the expression of cell cycle alteration- or apoptosis-related proteins as well as p53., Results: Cisplatin showed a time- and dose-dependent anti-proliferative effect in all cell lines. Cisplatin induced G2/M cell accumulation in the three cell lines after treatment with 0.5 and 1.0 µg/mL of cisplatin for 48 hours. The proportion of annexin V-FITC-stained cells increased following treatment with cisplatin. The apoptotic proportion was lower in the YD-38 cell line than in the YD-9 or YD-8 cell lines. Also, immunoblotting analysis indicated that p53 and p21 were detected only in YD-8 and YD-9 cell lines after cisplatin treatment., Conclusion: In this study, cisplatin showed anti-cancer effects via G2/M phase arrest and apoptosis, with some difference among OSCC cell lines. The mutation status of p53 might have influenced the difference observed among cell lines. Background: The goal of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the prognosis of minimal invasive horizontal ridge augmentation (MIHRA) technique using small incision and subperiosteal tunneling technique., Methods: This study targeted 25 partially edentulous patients (10 males and 15 females, mean age 48.8 ± 19.7 years) who needed bone graft for installation of the implants due to alveolar bone deficiency. The patients took the radiographic exam, panoramic and periapical view at first visit, and had implant fixture installation surgery. All patients received immediate or delayed implant surgery with bone graft using U-shaped incision and tunneling technique. After an average of 2.8 months, the prosthesis was connected and functioned. The clinical prognosis was recorded by observation of the peri-implant tissue at every visit. A year after restoration, the crestal bone loss around the implant was measured by taking the follow-up radiographs. One patient took 3D-CT before bone graft, after bone graft, and 2 years after restoration to compare and analyze change of alveolar bone width., Results: This study included 25 patients and 39 implants. Thirty eight implants (97.4 %) survived. As for postoperative complications, five patients showed minor infection symptoms, like swelling and tenderness after bone graft. The other one had buccal fenestration, and secondary bone graft was done by the same technique. No complications related with bone graft were found except in these patients. The mean crestal bone loss around the implants was 0.03 mm 1 year after restoration, and this was an adequate clinical prognosis. A patient took 3D-CT after bone graft, and the width of alveolar bone increased 4.32 mm added to 4.6 mm of former alveolar bone width. Two years after bone graft, the width of alveolar bone was 8.13 mm, and this suggested that the resorption rate of bone graft material was 18.29 % during 2 years., Conclusions: The bone graft material retained within a pouch formed using U-shaped incision and tunneling technique resulted with a few complications, and the prognosis of the implants placed above the alveolar bone was adequate.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare and analyze the peri-implant tissue conditions and prospective clinical outcomes associated with 2 types of hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated implants: (1) fully HA-coated implants and (2) partially HA-coated implants with resorbable blast medium on the coronal portion of the threads., Methods: Forty-four partially edentulous patients were randomly assigned to undergo the placement of 62 HA-coated implants, and were classified as the control group (partially HA-coated, n=30) and the test group (fully HA-coated, n=32). All patients had chronic periodontitis with moderate crestal bone loss around the edentulous area. The stability and clinical outcomes of the implants were evaluated using the primary and secondary implant stability quotient (ISQ), as well as radiographic, mobility, and peri-implant soft tissue assessments around the implants. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Mann-Whitney test were used to evaluate differences between and within the 2 groups, with P values <0.05 considered to indicate statistical significance., Results: The fully HA-coated implants displayed good retention of crestal bone, and insignificant differences were found in annual marginal bone loss between the 2 types of HA-coated implants ( P >0.05). No significant differences were found in the survival rate (group I, 100%; group II, 100%) or the success rate (group I, 93.3%; group II, 93.8%). The fully HA-coated implants also did not significantly increase the risk of peri-implantitis ( P >0.05)., Conclusions: The fully HA-coated implants did not lead to an increased risk of peri-implantitis and showed good retention of the crestal bone, as well as good survival and success rates. Our study suggests that fully HA-coated implants could become a reliable treatment alternative for edentulous posterior sites and are capable of providing good retention of the crestal bone., Competing Interests: No potential conflict of interest relevant to this article was reported.

Purpose: Early loading of implant can be determined by excellent primary stability and characteristic of implant surface. The implant system with recently improved surface can have load application 4-6 weeks after installing in maxilla and mandible. This study evaluated the effect of healing period to the stability of hydrophilic tapered-type implant at maxillary posterior area., Materials and Methods: This study included 30 patients treated by hydrophilic tapered-type implants (total 41 implants at maxilla) and classified by two groups depending on healing period. Group 1 (11 patients, 15 implants) was a control group and the healing period was 12 weeks, and Group 2 (19 patients, 26 implants) was test group and the healing period was 6 weeks. Immediately after implant placement, at the first impression taking, implant stability was measured using Osstell Mentor. The patients also took periapical radiographs after restoration delivery, 12 months after restoration and final followup period. The marginal bone loss around the implants was measured using the periapical radiographs., Results: All implants were survived and success rate was 97.56%. The marginal bone loss was less than 1mm after 1 year postoperatively except the one implant. The stabilities of the implants were not correlated with age, healing period until loading, insertion torque (IT), the diameter of fixture and the location of implant. Only the quality of bone in group 2 (6 week) was correlated with the stability of implant., Conclusion: Healing period of 6 weeks can make the similar clinical prognosis of implants to that of healing period of 12 weeks if bone quality is carefully considered in case of early loading.

Background: Mucous retention cyst refers to a cyst made by expansion due to the blockage of the salivary gland near the maxillary sinus, and it is surrounded by epithelial cells. Most of them are small; therefore, they cannot be found well and are frequently with antral polyp. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical prognosis of sinus bone graft in patients with mucous retention cyst., Methods: This study was performed retrospectively on 23 patients who had sinus bone graft. Group 1 was 8 patients (10 sinuses) who had a mucous retention cyst, and group 2 was 15 patients (17 sinuses) who had no pathologic history about the maxillary sinus. For these patients, sinus bone graft was performed using the lateral approach technique. The total 51 implants were placed 6.22 weeks on the average after sinus bone graft. Sinus membrane perforation during operation, postoperative complications, marginal bone loss after restorative function, implant success rate, and survival rate were analyzed., Results: There was no complication in group 1, and there were three complications in group 2. In group 2, two cases of implants failed. The types of postoperative complications consisted of two minor infections and one wound dehiscence. Two implants of total 51 implants were removed, and the survival rate of implants was 96.08 % (group 1 100 %, group 2 93.5 %). The total success rate of implants was 92.2 % (group 1 95 %, group 2 90.3 %)., Conclusions: The clinical prognosis was not affected by the presence of mucous retention cyst.

Purpose To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the quantitative parameter standardized uptake value (SUV) at single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/computed tomography (CT) for the evaluation of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder (TMD). Materials and Methods This study was approved by the institutional review board, and the need for informed consent was waived. Forty-four TMJs in 22 patients with TMD (five men and 17 women; mean age ± standard deviation, 30.0 years ± 12.1) were evaluated. The patients underwent planar bone scintigraphy and SPECT/CT 3-4 hours after injection of technetium 99m hydroxymethylene diphosphonate. The planar scintigraphy parameter of relative ratio (RR) and SPECT/CT parameters mean SUV (SUVmean) and maximum SUV (SUVmax) were compared for the visual assessment of TMD on planar scintigraphy images and for the presence of TMJ arthralgia. Group comparisons, receiver operating characteristic analysis, and Pearson correlation analysis were conducted. Results SUVmax gradually increased from normal (2.82 ± 0.73) to mild or moderately abnormal (3.56 ± 0.76, P < .05) and then to severely abnormal (4.86 ± 1.25, P < .05). However, RR and SUVmean did not vary significantly according to visual grade (P > .05). On the other hand, SUVmax was significantly greater in arthralgic TMJs (4.15 ± 1.11) than in nonarthralgic TMJs (2.97 ± 0.75, P < .001), as was SUVmean (1.63 ± 0.42 vs 1.30 ± 0.31, respectively; P = .005). However, there was no significant difference in RR (3.61 ± 0.57 vs 3.76 ± 0.68, P = .45). In receiver operating characteristic curve analyses for arthralgic TMJ, SUVmax had the greatest area under the curve (area of 0.815). Conclusion SUVmax derived from bone SPECT/CT may be useful for the evaluation of TMD. (©) RSNA, 2016 Online supplemental material is available for this article.
