Background: Nursing students are faced with multiple challenges and have a higher probability of suffering from anxiety. The current study aims to explore the relation between empathy and anxiety, examining the mediation and moderation effects of insomnia and self-compassion, respectively., Methods: This study employed a convenient sampling method, recruiting 1,161 nursing students (female = 923, male = 238, Mean age  = 18.37, SD age  = 2.38) from three universities in China. These students completed the questionnaires online, including General Anxiety Disorder -7 (GAD-7), Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy-Nursing student (JSPE-NS), Youth Self-rating Insomnia Scale -8 (YSIS-8), and Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). The study employed latent variable structural equation models to analyze the relation and mechanisms between empathy and anxiety. Then, the mediated role of insomnia and the moderated role of self-compassion were examined., Results: The prevalence rates of anxiety and insomnia in the current sample are 18.24% and 26.76%, respectively. The results showed that empathy could negatively predict anxiety, with a significant mediating effect of insomnia between them (B = -0.081, p < 0.05, 95% CI [-0.197, -0.063]). Additionally, it was proven that self-compassion moderated the positive relation between insomnia and anxiety. With a higher level of self-compassion, the indirect effect of empathy on anxiety through insomnia was weaker (B = -0.053, p < 0.01, 95% CI [-0.095, -0.019]). When individuals showed a lower level of self-compassion, the indirect effect of empathy on anxiety through insomnia was stronger (B = -0.144, p < 0.01, 95% CI [-0.255, -0.059])., Conclusion: The analysis of this research proved that empathy was negatively related to anxiety, and insomnia served as a mediator between empathy and anxiety. Besides, the protective role of self-compassion on individuals' mental health was identified. The findings of the study suggest that the education of nursing students should highlight the significance of fostering empathy and self-compassion. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provides an efficient way to analyze the functional connectivity between brain regions. A comprehensive understanding of brain functionality requires a unified description of multi-scale layers of neural structure. However, existing brain network modeling methods often simplify this property by averaging Blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signals at the brain region level for fMRI-based analysis with the assumption that BOLD signals are homogeneous within each brain region, which ignores the heterogeneity of voxels within each Region of Interest (ROI). This study introduces a novel multi-stage self-supervised learning framework for multiscale brain network analysis, which effectively delineates brain functionality from voxel to ROIs and up to sample level. A Contrastive Voxel Clustering (CVC) module is proposed to simultaneously learn the voxel-level features and clustering assignments, which ensures the retention of informative clustering features at the finest voxel-level and concurrently preserves functional connectivity characteristics. Additionally, based on the extracted features and clustering assignments at the voxel level by CVC, a Brain ROI-based Graph Neural Network (BR-GNN) is built to extract functional connectivity features at the brain ROI-level and used for sample-level prediction, which integrates the functional clustering maps with the pre-established structural ROI maps and creates a more comprehensive and effective analytical tool. Experiments are performed on two datasets, which illustrate the effectiveness and generalization ability of the proposed method by analyzing voxel-level clustering results and brain ROIs-level functional characteristics. The proposed method provides a multiscale modeling framework for brain functional connectivity analysis, which will be further used for other brain disease identification. As functional materials and nano-catalysts, Pd nanoparticles (NPs) are often used to modify two-dimensional (2D) materials. In the heterostructures of metal NPs and 2D transition metal dichalcogenides, the interface atomic configuration and interface effect greatly affect material properties and stability. Therefore, the rational design of interface structures and in-depth analysis of interface interactions are of vital importance for the preparation of specific functional devices. In this work, Pd NPs were deposited on mechanically exfoliated MoS 2 flakes and the epitaxial relationship between Pd and MoS 2 was observed, accompanied by distinct moiré patterns. Raman spectra of the Pd NPs/MoS 2 heterostructure showed an E12g' vibration mode indicative of the local strain in MoS 2 . A new vibration mode A' 1g appeared in the higher-frequency direction compared with the pristine A 1g peak. Combined with X-ray photoelectron spectra and density functional theory calculations, the new vibration mode can be attributed to the bonding between Pd and MoS 2 . Besides, graphene was inserted between Pd NPs and MoS 2 , and the decoupling of the interfacial effect by graphene was investigated. This study will help deepen our understanding on the interaction mechanism between metals and MoS 2 , thereby enabling the modulation of optoelectronic properties and the performance of these hybrid materials.

Liver fibrosis is a chronic pathological condition lacking specific clinical treatments. Stem cells, with notable potential in regenerative medicine, offer promise in treating liver fibrosis. However, stem cell therapy is hindered by potential immunological rejection, carcinogenesis risk, efficacy variation, and high cost. Stem cell secretome-based cell-free therapy offers potential solutions to address these challenges, but it is limited by low delivery efficiency and rapid clearance. Herein, an innovative approach for in situ implantation of smart microneedle (MN) arrays enabling precisely controlled delivery of multiple therapeutic agents directly into fibrotic liver tissues is developed. By integrating cell-free and platinum-based nanocatalytic combination therapy, the MN arrays can deactivate hepatic stellate cells. Moreover, they promote excessive extracellular matrix degradation by more than 75%, approaching normal levels. Additionally, the smart MN arrays can provide hepatocyte protection while reducing inflammation levels by ≈70-90%. They can also exhibit remarkable capability in scavenging almost 100% of reactive oxygen species and alleviating hypoxia. Ultimately, this treatment strategy can effectively restrain fibrosis progression. Introduction: Linezolid, moxifloxacin, rifapentine, rifabutin, cycloserine, clofazimine, bedaquiline, levofloxacin, prothionamide, and ethionamide are commonly used second-line antituberculosis (anti-TB) drugs. To support therapeutic drug monitoring in regular clinical practice, the authors sought to develop a method based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) that would allow for the simultaneous quantification of multiple second-line anti-TB drugs in human serum., Methods: Analytes were extracted from human serum by protein precipitation. UHPLC-MS/MS was performed using a gradient at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min, and each sample was taken for 7.5 minutes. The mass spectrometry scanning mode used was electrospray ionization with multiple reaction monitoring in the positive mode., Results: Validation showed that endogenous substances in the sample did not interfere with the assay, and the relationship between X and Y was highly linear, with a coefficient of determination (R 2 ) >0.9954 for each curve. The accuracy (85.0%-114.7%) and precision (intraday: 0.27%-9.32%; interday: 0.20%-7.66%) were less than 15.0%, and the internal standard-normalized matrix effects were consistent (coefficient of variation ≤4.40%). The analytes were stable in the final extract and human serum under various storage conditions (recovery: 87.0%-115.0%). The clinical applicability of the method was demonstrated by quantitative determination of analytes in serum samples obtained from patients with TB. Reproducibility of the drug concentrations measured in clinical samples was confirmed by incurred sample reanalysis., Conclusions: A simple and reliable analytical method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of 10 anti-TB drugs in human serum using UHPLC-MS/MS. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of text/telephone outreach messages and personal contact attempts on well-child care (WCC) scheduling and completion and measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine receipt., Methods: We conducted an intent-to-treat, 2 × 2 factorial randomized clinical trial with 3 replications at 3 academic pediatric primary care practices from September 27, 2020 to August 6, 2021. We randomized participants to 1 of 4 groups: 1 automated message (group 1), 2 automated messages (group 2), 1 automated message plus personal contact attempts (group 3), or 2 automated messages plus personal contact attempts (group 4). Outcomes included: 1) scheduled WCC within 2 weeks (secondary outcome), 2) completed WCC within 8 weeks (secondary outcome), 3) receipt of first MMR by 15 months of age or second MMR within 3 months of first message for 4-year-olds (primary outcome)., Results: We randomized 1312 patients (mean [SD] age = 38.8 [19.3] months, 53.5% male, 72.8% non-Hispanic Black, 86.9% Medicaid-enrolled). Scheduling rates were significantly higher in groups with personal contact attempts compared to those without (1 = 15.2%, 2 = 12.5%, 3 = 29.3%, and 4 = 31.5%). WCC completion rates also differed across groups: 1 = 27.4%, 2 = 22.3%, 3 = 32.0%, and 4 = 29.4%, with groups 3 and 4 having significantly higher rates than group 2. As one of the most commonly used antidiabetic medications clinically, liraglutide is involved in the protection of vascular endothelium, and whether it can relieve high glucose-induced vascular endothelial damage was unknown. This study aims to address the response of liraglutide (LIRA) on human umbilical vein endothelial cells, as well as to elucidate its possible underlying mechanism. We established a vascular endothelial cell injury model by exposing human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) to high glucose, and used LIRA pretreatment before HG treatment to address the endothelial protective effect of LIRA. Our results suggest that LIRA prevented HG-induced HUVEC apoptosis, oxidative stress, inflammasome activation, and pyroptosis. Furthermore, silencing of tribbles homolog 3 (TRIB3) could markedly reduce HG-induced HUVEC apoptosis, ROS level, the expressions of TXNIP, cleaved caspase3, NLRP3, and caspase1, indicating TRIB3 inhibition protected HUVECs against HG-induced vascular endothelial injury. In addition, LIRA restrained NF-κB/IκB-α signaling pathway activation in HUVECs. Thus, LIRA appears to mitigate HG-induced apoptosis, oxidative stress, inflammasome activation, and pyroptosis in HUVECs via regulating the TRIB3/NF-κB/IκB-α signaling pathway. Metal-organic frameworks have garnered attention as highly efficient pre-electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Current structure-activity relationships primarily rely on the assumption that the complete dissolution of organic ligands occurs during electrocatalysis. Herein, modeling based on NiFe Prussian blue analogs (NiFe-PBAs) show that cyanide ligands leach from the matrix and subsequently oxidize to corresponding inorganic ions (ammonium and carbonate) that re-adsorb onto the surface of NiFe OOH during the OER process. Interestingly, the surface-adsorbed inorganic ions induce the OER reaction of NiFe OOH to switch from the adsorbate evolution to the lattice-oxygen-mediated mechanism, thus contributing to the high activity. In addition, this reconstructed inorganic ion layer acting as a versatile protective layer can prevent the dissolution of metal sites to maintain contact between catalytic sites and reactive ions, thus breaking the activity-stability trade-off. Consequently, our constructed NiFe-PBAs exhibit excellent durability for 1250 h with an ultralow overpotential of 253 mV at 100 mA cm -2 . The scale-up NiFe-PBAs operated with a low energy consumption of ∼4.18 kWh m -3 H 2 in industrial water electrolysis equipment. Objective: Mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation is a metabolic pathway whose dysregulation is recognized as a critical factor in various cancers, because it sustains cancer cell survival, proliferation, and metastasis. The acyl-CoA synthetase long-chain (ACSL) family is known to activate long-chain fatty acids, yet the specific role of ACSL3 in breast cancer has not been determined., Methods: We assessed the prognostic value of ACSL3 in breast cancer by using data from tumor samples. Gain-of-function and loss-of-function assays were also conducted to determine the roles and downstream regulatory mechanisms of ACSL3 in vitro and in vivo ., Results: ACSL3 expression was notably downregulated in breast cancer tissues compared with normal tissues, and this phenotype correlated with improved survival outcomes. Functional experiments revealed that ACSL3 knockdown in breast cancer cells promoted cell proliferation, migration, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Mechanistically, ACSL3 was found to inhibit β-oxidation and the formation of associated byproducts, thereby suppressing malignant behavior in breast cancer. Importantly, ACSL3 was found to interact with YES proto-oncogene 1, a member of the Src family of tyrosine kinases, and to suppress its activation through phosphorylation at Tyr419. The decrease in activated YES1 consequently inhibited YAP1 nuclear colocalization and transcriptional complex formation, and the expression of its downstream genes in breast cancer cell nuclei., Conclusions: ACSL3 suppresses breast cancer progression by impeding lipid metabolism reprogramming, and inhibiting malignant behaviors through phospho-YES1 mediated inhibition of YAP1 and its downstream pathways. Backgruound: Insulin resistance (IR) is the key pathological basis of many metabolic disorders. Lack of asialoglycoprotein receptor 1 (ASGR1) decreased the serum lipid levels and reduced the risk of coronary artery disease. However, whether ASGR1 also participates in the regulatory network of insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism remains unknown., Methods: The constructed ASGR1 knockout mice and ASGR1-/- HepG2 cell lines were used to establish the animal model of metabolic syndrome and the IR cell model by high-fat diet (HFD) or drug induction, respectively. Then we evaluated the glucose metabolism and insulin signaling in vivo and in vitro., Results: ASGR1 deficiency ameliorated systemic IR in mice fed with HFD, evidenced by improved insulin intolerance, serum insulin, and homeostasis model assessment of IR index, mainly contributed from increased insulin signaling in the liver, but not in muscle or adipose tissues. Meanwhile, the insulin signal transduction was significantly enhanced in ASGR1-/- HepG2 cells. By transcriptome analyses and comparison, those differentially expressed genes between ASGR1 null and wild type were enriched in the insulin signal pathway, particularly in phosphoinositide 3-kinase-AKT signaling. Notably, ASGR1 deficiency significantly reduced hepatic gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis., Conclusion: The ASGR1 deficiency was consequentially linked with improved hepatic insulin sensitivity under metabolic stress, hepatic IR was the core factor of systemic IR, and overcoming hepatic IR significantly relieved the systemic IR. It suggests that ASGR1 is a potential intervention target for improving systemic IR in metabolic disorders.

Excessive intake of sugar has become a public concern. However, it is challenging for food industries to decrease sugar level without sacrificing safety and sensory profile. Odor-induced sweetness enhancement (OISE) is believed to be a novel and promising strategy for sugar reduction. In order to investigate the OISE effect of mango aroma and evaluate its degree of sugar reduction in low-sugar beverages, a mathematical model was constructed through sensory evaluation in this study. The results showed that the maximum liking of low-sugar model beverages was 4.28 % sucrose and 0.57 % mango flavor. The most synergistic of OISE was at the concentration level of 2.24 % sucrose + 0.25 % mango flavor, which was equivalent to 2.96 % pure sucrose solution. With 32.14 % sugar reduction, the mango aroma was suggested to generate the OISE effect. However, the same level of garlic aroma was not able to enhance sweetness perception, suggesting that the congruency of aroma and taste is a prerequisite for the OISE effect to occur. Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) lyases are often strictly substrate specific, and it is especially difficult to simultaneously degrade GAGs with different types of glycosidic bonds. Herein, we found a new class of GAG lyases (GAGases) from different bacteria. These GAGases belong to polysaccharide lyase 35 family and share quite low homology with the identified GAG lyases. The most surprising thing is that GAGases can not only degrade three types of GAGs: hyaluronan, chondroitin sulfate, and heparan sulfate but also even one of them can also degrade alginate. Further investigation of structural preferences revealed that GAGases selectively act on GAG domains composed of non/6-O-/N-sulfated hexosamines and d-glucoronic acids as well as on alginate domains composed of d-mannuronic acids. In addition, GAG lyases were once speculated to have evolved from alginate lyases, but no transitional enzymes have been found. Background: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are ubiquitous environmental chemicals used as flame retardants in commercial and consumer products. Gestational PBDE concentrations are associated with adverse behaviors in children; however, the persistence of these associations into adolescence remains understudied., Objective: We estimated the association of gestational PBDE serum concentrations with early adolescent self- and caregiver-reported behaviors at age 12 years and determined the consistency with previously observed associations in childhood with caregiver-reported behaviors in a prospective pregnancy and birth cohort., Methods: We measured maternal serum concentrations of five individual PBDE congeners and created a summary exposure variable (∑ 5 BDE: 28, -47, -99, -100 and -153) during pregnancy. At age 12 years, we assessed behaviors for 237 adolescents using self- and caregiver-reports with the Behavioral Assessment System for Children-3 (BASC3). We used multivariable linear regression models to estimate covariate-adjusted associations of lipid standardized, log 10 -transformed gestational PBDE concentrations with BASC3 scores. We obtained estimates and 95% confidence intervals through a bootstrapping approach. We evaluated potential effect measure modification (EMM) of adolescent sex by examining sex-stratified regression models and estimating the EMM p-values., Results: Gestational PBDE concentrations were positively associated with adolescent-reported BASC3 composite indices for inattention & hyperactivity (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, ∑ 5 BDE), internalizing problems (BDE-28, -47, -99), functional impairment (BDE-28, ∑ 5 BDE), and emotional symptoms (BDE-28). Gestational PBDE concentrations were positively associated with caregiver-reported BASC3 composite indices for externalizing problems (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, ∑ 5 BDE) and behavioral symptoms (BDE-99). For caregiver reported behaviors, we observed stronger associations with gestational BDE concentrations among males, especially for executive functioning (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, ∑ 5 BDE)., Discussion: Gestational PBDE serum concentrations were associated with self-reported internalizing and externalizing behavior problems in early adolescence. Caregiver-reported externalizing behaviors recognized during childhood remain associated with gestational PBDE concentrations and persist into early adolescence. Background: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposures may negatively impact bone mineral accrual, but little is known about potential mitigators of this relation. We assessed whether associations of PFAS and their mixture with bone mineral content (BMC) in adolescence were modified by diet and physical activity., Methods: We included 197 adolescents enrolled in a prospective pregnancy and birth cohort in Cincinnati, Ohio (2003-2006). At age 12 years, we collected serum for PFAS measurements and used dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry to measure BMC. We calculated dietary calcium intake and Health Eating Index (HEI) scores from repeated 24-h dietary recalls, physical activity scores using the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C), and average moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) based on accelerometry. We estimated covariate-adjusted differences in BMC z-scores per interquartile range (IQR) increase of individual PFAS concentrations using linear regression and per simultaneous IQR increase in all four PFAS using g-computation. We evaluated effect measure modification (EMM) using interaction terms between each modifier and PFAS., Results: Higher serum perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, and perfluorononanoic acid concentrations and the PFAS mixture were associated with lower BMC z-scores. An IQR increase in all PFAS was associated with a 0.27 (-0.54, 0.01) lower distal radius BMC z-score. Associations with lower BMC were generally stronger among adolescents classified as < median for calcium intake, HEI scores, or MVPA compared to those ≥ median. Osteoporosis is the most common bone metabolic disease that affects the health of middle-aged and elderly people, which is hallmarked by imbalanced bone remodeling and a deteriorating immune microenvironment. Magnesium and calcium are pivotal matrix components that participate in the bone formation process, especially in the immune microenvironment regulation and bone remodeling stages. Nevertheless, how to potently deliver magnesium and calcium to bone tissue remains a challenge. Here, we have constructed a multifunctional nanoplatform composed of calcium-based upconversion nanoparticles and magnesium organic frameworks (CM-NH 2 -PAA-Ald, denoted as CMPA), which features bone-targeting and pH-responsive properties, effectively regulating the inflammatory microenvironment and promoting the coordination of osteogenic functions for treating osteoporosis. The nanoplatform can efficaciously target bone tissue and gradually degrade in response to the acidic microenvironment of osteoporosis to release magnesium and calcium ions. This study validates that CMPA possessing favorable biocompatibility can suppress inflammation and facilitate osteogenesis to treat osteoporosis. Importantly, high-throughput sequencing results demonstrate that the nanoplatform exerts a good inflammatory regulation effect through inhibition of the nuclear factor kappa-B signaling pathway, thereby normalizing the osteoporotic microenvironment. Few methods have been used to characterize repeatedly measured biomarkers of chemical mixtures. We applied latent profile analysis (LPA) to serum concentrations of 4 perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) measured at 4 time points from gestation to age 12 years. We evaluated the relationships between profiles and z scores of height, body mass index, fat mass index, and lean body mass index at age 12 years (n = 218). We compared LPA findings with an alternative approach for cumulative PFAS mixtures using g-computation to estimate the effect of simultaneously increasing the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for all PFAS. We identified 2 profiles: a higher PFAS profile (35% of sample) and a lower PFAS profile (relative to each other), based on their average PFAS concentrations at all time points. The higher PFAS profile had generally lower z scores for all outcomes, with somewhat larger effects for males, though all 95% CIs crossed the null. For example, the higher PFAS profile was associated with a 0.50-unit lower (β = -0.50; 95% CI, -1.07 to 0.08) BMI z score among males but not among females (β = 0.04; 95% CI, -0.45 to 0.54). We observed similar patterns with AUCs. We found that a higher childhood PFAS profile and higher cumulative PFAS mixtures may be associated with altered growth in early adolescence. Background: Although observational studies have revealed associations between idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) and lung cancer (LC), they have not established a causal relationship between these 2 conditions., Methods: We used a 2-sample Mendelian randomization approach to examine the bidirectional causal associations between IIMs and LC, using single-nucleotide polymorphisms selected from high-quality genome-wide association studies in the FinnGen database. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to assess potential heterogeneity and pleiotropy impacts on the Mendelian randomization results., Results: Our analysis demonstrated a positive causal effect of genetically increased IIM risk on LC (odds ratio, 1.114; 95% confidence interval, 1.057-1.173; p = 5.63 × 10 -5 ), particularly on the lung squamous cell carcinoma subtype (odds ratio, 1.168, 95% confidence interval, 1.049-1.300, p = 0.00451), but not on lung adenocarcinoma or small cell lung cancer. No causal effect of LC on IIMs was identified. Sensitivity analyses indicated that horizontal pleiotropy was unlikely to influence causality, and leave-one-out analysis confirmed that the observed associations were not driven by a single-nucleotide polymorphism., Conclusion: Our findings offer compelling evidence of a positive causal relationship between IIMs and LC, particularly with regard to lung squamous cell carcinoma, in the European population. Background: The accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI) and experts in diagnosing early esophageal cancer (EC) and its infiltration depth was summarized and analyzed, thus identifying the advantages of AI over traditional manual diagnosis, with a view to more accurately assisting doctors in evaluating the patients' conditions and improving their cure and survival rates., Methods: The PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Google, and CNKI databases were searched for relevant literature related to AI diagnosis of early EC and its invasion depth published before August 2023. Summary analysis of pooled sensitivity, specificity, summary receiver operating characteristics (SROC) and area under the curve (AUC) of AI in diagnosing early EC were performed, and Review Manager and Stata were adopted for data analysis., Results: A total of 19 studies were enrolled with a low to moderate total risk of bias. The pooled sensitivity of AI for diagnosing early EC was markedly higher than that of novices and comparable to that of endoscopists. Moreover, AI predicted early EC with markedly higher AUCs than novices and experts (0.93 vs. 0.74 vs. 0.89). In addition, pooled sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of invasion depth in early EC were higher than that of experts, with AUCs of 0.97 and 0.92, respectively., Conclusion: AI-assistance can diagnose early EC and its infiltration depth more accurately, which can help in its early intervention and the customization of personalized treatment plans. Baseflow is a crucial water source in the inland river basins of high-cold mountainous region, playing a significant role in maintaining runoff stability. It is challenging to select the most suitable baseflow separation method in data-scarce high-cold mountainous region and to evaluate effects of climate factors and underlying surface changes on baseflow variability and seasonal distribution characteristics. Here we attempt to address how meteorological factors and underlying surface changes affect baseflow using the Grey Wolf Optimizer Digital Filter Method (GWO-DFM) for rapid baseflow separation and the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network model for baseflow prediction, clarifying interpretability of the LSTM model in baseflow forecasting. The proposed method was successfully implemented using a 63-year time series (1958-2020) of flow data from the Tai Lan River (TLR) basin in the high-cold mountainous region, along with 21 years of ERA5-land meteorological data and MODIS data (2000-2020). The results indicate that: (1) GWO-DFM can rapidly identify the optimal filtering parameters. It employs the arithmetic average of three methods, namely Chapman, Chapman-Maxwell and Eckhardt filter, as the best baseflow separation approach for the TLR basin. Additionally, the baseflow significantly increases after the second mutation of the baseflow rate. (2) Baseflow sources are mainly influenced by precipitation infiltration, glacier frozen soil layers, and seasonal ponding. (3) Solar radiation, temperature, precipitation, and NDVI are the primary factors influencing baseflow changes, with Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficients exceeding 0.78 in both the LSTM model training and prediction periods. (4) Changes in baseflow are most influenced by solar radiation, temperature, and NDVI. To enhance the drying quality of potato slices, this investigation employed a microwave heating (MH) combined with ethanol osmotic dehydration (EOD) pretreatment strategy to improve the quality of explosion puffing drying (EPD). This paper systematically investigated the effects of different pretreatment methods (no treatment, HAD, MH, EOD, MH+EOD) on the quality and physicochemical properties of potato slices subjected to CO 2 -EPD. The results showed that after MH and EOD pretreatments, the internal pores of the potato slices exhibited a uniform porous structure. The MH+EOD+CO 2 -EPD treatment demonstrated superior expansion, crispness, hardness, and color, with higher retention rates of vitamin C and protein. The measurements were an expansion ratio of 2.15, hardness of 1290.01 g, crispness of 745.94 g, ΔE of 6.54, protein content of 1.99 g/100 g, and VC content of 17.33 mg/100 g. Additionally, the study explored the effects of microwave power, microwave drying time, ethanol concentration, and ethanol soaking time on the expansion ratio, hardness, crispness, protein content, VC content, and color. Background: Recent studies have provided evidence supporting the functional role and mechanism of lactate in suppressing anticancer immunity. However, there is no systematic analysis of lactate metabolism-related genes (LMRGs) and ovarian cancer (OV) prognosis., Results: Six genes (CCL18, CCND1, MXRA5, NRBP2, OLFML2B and THY1) were selected as prognostic genes and a prognostic model was utilized. Kaplan-Meier (K-M) and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analyses were further performed and indicated that the prognostic model was effective. Subsequently, the neoplasm&#95;cancer&#95;status and RiskScore were determined as independent prognostic factors, and a nomogram was established with relatively accurate forecasting ability. Additionally, 2 types of immune cells (Central memory CD8 T cell and Immature B cell), 4 types of immune functions (APC co inhibition, DCs, Tfh and Th1 cells), 9 immune checkpoints (BTLA, CTLA4, IDO1, LAG3, VTCN1, CXCL10, CXCL9, IFNG, CD27) and tumor immune dysfunction and exclusion (TIDE) scores were significantly different between risk groups. Interface strain significantly affects the band structure and electronic states of metal-nanocrystal-2D-semiconductor heterostructures, impacting system performance. While transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a powerful tool for studying interface strain, its accuracy may be compromised by sample overlap in high-resolution images due to the unique nature of the metal-nanocrystals-2D-semiconductors heterostructure. Utilizing digital dark-field technology, the substrate influence on metal atomic column contrasts is eliminated, improving the accuracy of quantitative analysis in high-resolution TEM images. Applying this method to investigate Pt on MoS 2 surfaces reveals that the heterostructure introduces a tensile strain of ≈3% in Pt nanocrystal. The x-directional linear strain in Pt nanocrystals has a periodic distribution that matches the semi-coherent interface between Pt nanocrystals and MoS 2 , while the remaining strain components localize mainly on edge atomic steps. Flood forecasting using traditional physical hydrology models requires consideration of multiple complex physical processes including the spatio-temporal distribution of rainfall, the spatial heterogeneity of watershed sub-surface characteristics, and runoff generation and routing behaviours. Data-driven models offer novel solutions to these challenges, though they are hindered by difficulties in hyperparameter selection and a decline in prediction stability as the lead time extends. This study introduces a hybrid model, the RS-LSTM-Transformer, which combines Random Search (RS), Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTM), and the Transformer architecture. Applied to the typical Jingle watershed in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, this model utilises rainfall and runoff data from basin sites to simulate flood processes, and its outcomes are compared against those from RS-LSTM, RS-Transformer, RS-BP, and RS-MLP models. It was evaluated against RS-LSTM, RS-Transformer, RS-BP, and RS-MLP models using the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency Coefficient (NSE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Bias percentage as metrics. At a 1-h lead time during calibration and validation, the RS-LSTM-Transformer model achieved NSE, RMSE, MAE, and Bias values of 0.970, 14.001m 3 /s, 5.304m 3 /s, 0.501% and 0.953, 14.124m 3 /s, 6.365m 3 /s, 0.523%, respectively. These results demonstrate the model's superior simulation capabilities and robustness, providing more accurate peak flow forecasts as the lead time increases. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based plasma fatty acids are objective biomarkers of many diseases. Herein, we aim to explore the associations of NMR-based plasma fatty acids with the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and chronic liver disease (CLD) mortality in 252,398 UK Biobank participants. Here we show plasma levels of n-3 poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and n-6 PUFA are negatively associated with the risk of incident HCC [HR Q4vsQ1 : 0.48 (95% CI: 0.33-0.69) and 0.48 (95% CI: 0.28-0.81), respectively] and CLD mortality [HR Q4vsQ1 : 0.21 (95% CI: 0.13-0.33) and 0.15 (95% CI: 0.08-0.30), respectively], whereas plasma levels of saturated fatty acids are positively associated with these outcomes [HR Q4vsQ1 : 3.55 (95% CI: 2.25-5.61) for HCC and 6.34 (95% CI: 3.68-10.92) for CLD mortality]. Furthermore, fibrosis stage significantly modifies the associations between PUFA and CLD mortality. Executive functioning (EF) abilities develop through childhood, but this development can be impacted by various psychosocial environmental influences. Using longitudinal data from the Health Outcome and Measures of the Environment (HOME) Study, a prospective pregnancy and birth cohort study, we examined if psychosocial environmental factors were significant predictors of EF development. Study participants comprised 271 children and their primary caregivers (98.5% mothers) followed from birth to age 12. We identified four distinct EF developmental trajectory groups comprising a consistently impaired group (13.3%), a descending impairment group (27.7%), an ascending impairment group (9.95%), and a consistently not impaired group (49.1%). Higher levels of maternal ADHD and relational frustration appear to be risk factors for increased EF difficulty over time, while higher family income may serve as a protective factor delaying predisposed EF impairment. Important intervention targets might include teaching positive and effective parenting strategies to mothers whose children are at risk for EF dysfunction.

Background: Flavor is considered as a key quality attribute of fruit juice affecting consumer acceptance. During processing, the flavor loss of cloudy juice always occurs due to the variations of juice cloud particles. Pectin, a major component of cloud particles, plays an important role in cloud stability. In this work, we focused on the effects of variation of three pectin fractions caused by gentle centrifugation and clarification on the physicochemical properties, volatile content and sensory profile of heat-sterilized muskmelon cloudy juice., Results: Centrifugation treatment reduced the total soluble solids and viscosity of cloudy juice and increased cloud stability. With centrifugation increased, the contents of most monosaccharides in the three pectin fractions were reduced. Most aroma-active aldehydes and alcohols, such as (2E,6Z)-nonadienal, 1-octen-3-ol and (E)-non-2-enal, after gentle centrifugation and clarification, were maintained, but most esters were decreased. The volatile compositions were highly related to the three pectin fractions. The addition of chelator-soluble pectin and sodium carbonate-soluble pectin could decrease the formation of dimethyl trisulfide and dimethyl disulfide in clarified juice, thereby improving the sensory profile., Conclusion: The results suggested that endogenous chelator-soluble pectin and sodium carbonate-soluble pectin can be used in heat-sterilized fruit juice to improve flavor quality, with an emphasis on a significant reduction in volatile sulfur compounds. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry., (© 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.)

Objective: Botulinum toxin A has been shown to be effective in managing depression. This study aimed to evaluate the antidepressant and antianxiety effects of two different doses of botulinum toxin A in patients with mild to moderate depression., Methods: A total of 140 patients diagnosed with mild to moderate depression at the Department of Neurology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University from September 2020 to September 2021 were enrolled for the study. The patients were allocated into two groups and treated with two different doses of botulinum toxin A (50 units or 100 units). Depression scores (HAMD, HAMA, SDS, and SAS) were evaluated at baseline and 1, 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks after treatment., Results: There was a significant improvement in the depressive and anxiety symptoms following treatment with the botulinum toxin A after 12 weeks compared to the baseline. However, there were no significant differences between the two groups. Further, the factor scores of anxiety/somatization, blocking, sleep disorder, and cognitive disorder were significantly decreased after 12 weeks of treatment with 50 units of botulinum toxin A compared to the baseline (P < 0.05). Further, the factor scores of somatic and mental anxiety were significantly decreased at different time points after treatment with 50 units of botulinum toxin A compared to the baseline (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Local injections of 50 units and 100 units of botulinum toxin A shows equal efficacy. Thyroid hormones are essential for neurodevelopment. Few studies have considered associations with quantitatively measured autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-related traits, which may help elucidate associations for a broader population. Participants were drawn from two prospective pregnancy cohorts: the Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation (EARLI), enrolling pregnant women who already had a child with ASD, and the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (HOME) Study, following pregnant women from the greater Cincinnati, OH area. Gestational thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4) were measured in mid-pregnancy 16 (±3) weeks gestation serum samples. ASD-related traits were measured using the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) at ages 3-8 years. The association was examined using quantile regression, adjusting for maternal and sociodemographic factors. 278 participants (132 from EARLI, 146 from HOME) were included. TSH distributions were similar across cohorts, while FT4 levels were higher in EARLI compared to HOME. In pooled analyses, particularly for those in the highest SRS quantile (95th percentile), higher FT4 levels were associated with increasing SRS scores (β = 5.21, 95% CI = 0.93, 9.48), and higher TSH levels were associated with decreasing SRS scores (β = -6.94, 95% CI = -11.04, -2.83). The association between TSH and SRS remained significant in HOME for the 95% percentile of SRS scores (β = -6.48, 95% CI = -12.16, -0.80), but not EARLI. Results for FT4 were attenuated when examined in the individual cohorts. Objective: The treatment of eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (E-CRSwNP) remains a challenge due to its complex pathogenesis. Inositol polyphosphate-4-phosphatase type IA (INPP4A), a lipid phosphatase, has been implicated in allergic asthma. However, the expression and function of INPP4A in E-CRSwNP remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the role of INPP4A in macrophages in E-CRSwNP., Methods: We assessed the expression of INPP4A in human and mouse nasal mucosal tissues via immunofluorescence staining. THP-1 cells were cultured and exposed to various cytokines to investigate the regulation of INPP4A expression and its functional role. Additionally, we established a murine nasal polyp (NP) model and administrated an INPP4A-overexpressing lentivirus evaluate its impact on NP., Results: The percentage of INPP4A + CD68 + macrophages among total macrophages decreased in the E-CRSwNP group compared to the control and the non-eosinophilic CRSwNP (NE-CRSwNP) groups, exhibiting an inverse correlation with an increased percentage of CD206 + CD68 + M2 macrophages among total macrophages. Overexpression of INPP4A led to a reduced percentage of THP-1 cells polarizing towards the M2 phenotype, accompanied by decreased levels of associated chemotactic factors including CCL18, CCL22, CCL24, and CCL26. We also validated the involvement of the PI3K-AKT pathway in the function of INPP4A in vitro. Furthermore, INPP4A overexpression in the murine NP model resulted in the attenuation of eosinophilic inflammation in the nasal mucosa., Conclusions: INPP4A deficiency promotes macrophage polarization towards the M2 phenotype, leading to the secretion of chemokines that recruit eosinophils and Th2 cells, thereby amplifying eosinophilic inflammation in E-CRSwNP. Background: Triclosan is an endocrine-disrupting chemical, but associations with pubertal outcomes remain unclear. We examined associations of gestational and childhood triclosan with adolescent hormone concentrations and pubertal stage., Methods: We quantified urinary triclosan concentrations twice during pregnancy and seven times between birth and 12 years in participants recruited from Cincinnati, OH (2003-2006). We averaged concentrations across pregnancy and childhood and separately considered individual exposure periods in multiple informant models. At 12 years, we measured serum hormone concentrations (males [n = 72] and females [n = 84]-dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone; males-testosterone; females-estradiol). Also at age 12 years, participants self-reported physical development and menarchal timing. We estimated associations (95% confidence interval) of triclosan with hormone concentrations, more advanced physical development, and age at menarche., Results: For females, each doubling of childhood triclosan was associated with 16% lower estradiol concentrations (-29%, 0%), with stronger associations for measures closer to adolescence. We found suggestive evidence that higher triclosan at any age was associated with ~10% (for gestational triclosan: -18%, -2%) lower follicle-stimulating hormone concentrations among males and early postnatal (1-3 years) triclosan was associated with 63% (5%, 96%) lower odds of advanced pubic hair development in females. In multiple informant models, each doubling of gestational triclosan concentrations was associated with 5% (0%, 9%) earlier age at menarche, equivalent to 5.5 months., Conclusion: Gestational and childhood triclosan concentrations were related to some pubertal outcomes including hormone concentrations and age at menarche. Comprehensive visualization and accurate extraction of tumor vasculature are essential to study the nature of glioma. Nowadays, tissue clearing technology enables 3D visualization of human glioma vasculature at micron resolution, but current vessel extraction schemes cannot well cope with the extraction of complex tumor vessels with high disruption and irregularity under realistic conditions. Here, we developed a framework, FineVess, based on deep learning to automatically extract glioma vessels in confocal microscope images of cleared human tumor tissues. In the framework, a customized deep learning network, named 3D ResCBAM nnU-Net, was designed to segment the vessels, and a novel pipeline based on preprocessing and post-processing was developed to refine the segmentation results automatically. On the basis of its application to a practical dataset, we showed that the FineVess enabled extraction of variable and incomplete vessels with high accuracy in challenging 3D images, better than other traditional and state-of-the-art schemes. Background: In the contemporary academic milieu, an array of erudite investigations has meticulously delved into the ramifications of social media paradigms on the nuances of modern societal interactions. Predominantly, these scholarly endeavors have harnessed quantitative methodologies to discern both the advantageous and detrimental implications of social media. Notwithstanding these extensive analyses, there appears to be a conspicuous lacuna in the literature about the subjective repercussions of social media on the well-being and contentment of tertiary education students. In light of this gap, the present qualitative exploration seeks to elucidate the perceptions of Chinese collegiate individuals vis-à-vis the influence of social media platforms on their experiential happiness., Method: Guided by interpretative phenomenological analysis (Jonathan et al., 2022) [1], we conducted 3 semi-structured interviews with 5 university students., Result: Using an interpretive phenomenology analysis approach four themes. Study Objectives: This study examines the impact of sleep duration, bedtime, and sleep disturbance during early childhood on the risk of cardiometabolic disorder (CMD) in early adolescence., Methods: Within the Health Outcomes and Measures of Environment Study, we examined sleep patterns of 330 children from ages 2 to 8 years and the relationship of these sleep patterns with cardiometabolic risk measures at age 12 (N = 220). We used a group-based semi-parametric mixture model to identify distinct trajectories in sleep duration, bedtime timing, and sleep disturbance for the entire sample. We then examined the associations between sleep trajectories and CMD risk measures using general linear models using both an unadjusted model (no covariates) and an adjusted model (adjusting for child pubertal stage, child sex, duration of breastfeeding, household income, maternal education, and maternal serum cotinine)., Results: In the unadjusted and adjusted models, we found significant differences in CMD risk scores by trajectories of sleep disturbance. Children in the "high" disturbance trajectory had higher CMD risk scores than those in the 'low' disturbance trajectory (p's = 0.002 and 0.039, respectively). No significant differences in CMD risk were observed for bedtime timing or total sleep time trajectories in the unadjusted or adjusted models., Conclusions: In this cohort, caregiver-reported sleep disturbance in early childhood was associated with more adverse cardiometabolic profiles in early adolescence. Objective: To assess the influence of high-quality nursing during visual electrophysiology examinations on both nursing outcomes and stress levels., Methods: A total of 80 patients who underwent visual electrophysiology examinations in the hospital from January 2021 to January 2022 were included as study subjects and randomized into two groups using random allocation. This random assignment ensures that each patient has an equal chance of being assigned to either group, minimizing the effects of confounding variables and evenly distributing potential bias. The control group received conventional nursing care, while the study group received quality nursing care, with 40 patients in each group. Patients in both groups were compared regarding nursing impact, occurrence of adverse reactions, pain level, and stress status., Results: In the study group, 39 patients exhibited high levels of cooperation, while 1 demonstrated a low degree of cooperation. Conversely, in the control group, 36 subjects were highly cooperative, but 6 displayed a low degree of cooperation. The cooperation rate was significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group (97.5% vs. 85.0%, χ² = 3.914, P = .048). SAS scores and SDS scores after treatment were observed to be lower in the study group compared to those in the control group (P < .05). The increase in scores within the study group was notably less than that observed in the control group (P < .05). The results indicate that 38 patients in the study group reported satisfaction, while 31 in the control group expressed satisfaction. The nursing satisfaction rate was significantly higher in the study group than in the control group (P < .05)., Conclusions: Quality nursing care during visual electrophysiology examinations proves to be highly effective in enhancing patient compliance, fostering a higher rate of patient cooperation, and mitigating patient stress. Furthermore, it contributes to the improvement of patient satisfaction with nursing care, ultimately elevating the overall healthcare relationship.

Bearings are critical components of industrial equipment and have a significant impact on the safety of industrial physical systems. Their failure may lead to equipment shutdown and accidents, posing a significant risk to production safety. However, it is difficult to obtain a large amount of bearing fault data in practice, which makes the problem of small sample size a major challenge for bearing fault detection. In addition, some methods may overlook important features in bearing vibration signals, leading to insufficient detection capabilities. To address the challenges in bearing fault detection, this paper proposed a few sample learning methods based on the multidimensional convolution and attention mechanism. First, a multichannel preprocessing method was designed to more effectively utilize the information in the bearing vibration signal. Second, by extracting multidimensional features and enhancing the attention to important features through multidimensional convolution operations and attention mechanisms, the feature extraction ability of the network was improved. Furthermore, nonlinear mapping of feature vectors into the metric space to calculate distance can better measure the similarity between samples, thereby improving the accuracy of bearing fault detection and providing important guarantees for the safe operation of industrial systems. Extensive experiments have shown that the proposed method has good fault detection performance under small sample conditions, which is beneficial for reducing machine downtime and economic losses.

Fibrotic kidney injury from hepatocarcinogenesis seriously impacts treatment effect. Astragaloside IV (AS-IV), an extract of Astragalus membranaceus, has several pharmacological activities, which are useful in the treatment of edema and fibrosis. Nrf2/HO-1 is a key antioxidant stress pathway and help treatment of kidney injury. Smad3 phosphorylation is implicated in hepatocarcinogenesis. Our previous study clarified that Smad3 is differentially regulated by different phosphorylated forms of Smad3 on hepatocarcinogenesis. Therefore, we investigated the contribution of AS-IV on the therapy of kidney fibrosis from hepatocarcinogenesis. And the focus was on whether the phosphorylation of Smad3 and the regulation of Nrf2/HO-1 pathway were involved during AS-IV therapy and whether there is an effect of Nrf2 knockout on the phosphorylation of Smad3. We performed TGF-β1 stimulation on HK-2 cells and intervened with AS-IV. Furtherly, we investigated renal injury of AS-IV on Nrf2 knockout mice during hepatocarcinogenesis and its mechanism of action. On the one hand, in vitro results showed that AS-IV reduced the ROS and α-SMA expression of HK-2 by promoting the expression pSmad3C/p21 of and Nrf2/HO-1 and suppressed the expression of pSmad3L/PAI-1. On the other hand, the in vivo results of histopathological features, serological biomarkers, and oxidative damage indicators showed that Nrf2 knockout aggravated renal injury. Besides, Nrf2 deletion decreased the nephroprotective effect of AS-IV by suppressing the pSmad3C/p21 pathway and promoting the pSmad3L/PAI-1 pathway. The experimental results were as we suspected. And we identify for the first time that Nrf2 deficiency increases renal fibrosis from hepatocarcinogenesis and attenuates the therapeutic effects of AS-IV via regulating pSmad3C/3L signal pathway., (© 2023. Background: Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have replaced flame retardant polybrominated diphenyl ethers as flame retardants in consumer products, but few longitudinal studies have characterized childhood OPE exposure., Objective: We aimed to examine the exposure pattern of urinary OPE metabolites in children., Methods: We quantified three urinary OPE metabolites five times in children (1, 2, 3, 5, 8 years) from 312 mother-child pairs in the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (HOME) Study, a prospective pregnancy and birth cohort in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. We examined the associations of average maternal OPE metabolite concentrations with OPE metabolite concentrations in childhood, characterized childhood OPE trajectories with latent class growth analysis (LCGA), and examined factors related to trajectory membership., Results: Bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (BCEP) had the lowest median concentrations over time (0.66-0.97 mg/L) while the median concentrations of bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BDCIPP) increased with age (1.44-3.80 mg/L). The median concentrations of diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) fluctuated between 1.96 and 2.69 mg/L. Intraclass correlation coefficients for urinary metabolites measured at five time points indicated high variability within individuals (0.13-0.24). Average maternal urinary BCEP and BDCIPP were associated with concentrations in early childhood. Maternal education, the birth year of the child, and having a carpet in the main activity room were associated with BCEP and BDCIPP trajectory while none of the factors were associated with DPHP trajectory., Significance: The trajectory analysis showed different patterns of urinary OPE metabolite concentrations, suggesting the need to collect multiple samples to adequately reflect OPE exposure., Impact Statement: In this well-established cohort, we evaluated the patterns of urinary OPE metabolites in children ages 1-8 years. The number of repeated measures over childhood has not been achieved in prior studies. Our results suggested the high variability of urinary OPE metabolites within individuals. Maternal metabolite concentrations during pregnancy were related to child concentrations at ages 1-3 years. Elevated homocysteine (Hcy) levels have been linked to the development of cardiovascular diseases, notably endothelial dysfunction, a critical precursor to atherosclerosis. In this extensive investigation, we explore the intricate pathways through which Hcy influences endothelial dysfunction, with particular attention to the CXCL10/CXCR3 axis. Employing a dual approach encompassing both in vitro and in vivo models, we scrutinize the repercussions of Hcy exposure on endothelial functionality. Our results reveal that Hcy significantly impairs crucial endothelial processes, including cell migration, proliferation, and tube formation. Concomitantly, Hcy upregulates the expression of adhesion molecules, exacerbating endothelial dysfunction. In a murine hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) model, we observed a parallel increase in plasma Hcy levels and adverse vascular effects. Moreover, our study unraveled a pivotal role of the CXCL10/CXCR3 axis in Hcy-induced endothelial dysfunction. Hcy exposure led to the upregulation of CXCL10 and CXCR3, both in vitro and in HHcy mice. Importantly, the blockade of this axis, achieved through specific antibodies or NBI-74330, mitigated the detrimental effects of Hcy on endothelial function. In conclusion, our findings illuminated the central role of the CXCL10/CXCR3 axis in mediating Hcy-induced endothelial dysfunction, providing valuable insights for potential therapeutic strategies in managing HHcy-related cardiovascular diseases.

One-dimensional molecular crystal waveguide (MCW) can transmit self-generated electrochemiluminescence (ECL), but heavy optical loss occurs because of the small difference in the refractive index between the crystal and its surroundings. Herein, we report a micropipette electrode-supported MCW (MPE/MCW) for precisely controlling the far-field transmission of ECL in air with a low optical loss. ECL is generated from one terminal of the MCW positioned inside the MPE, which is transmitted along the MCW to the other terminal in air. In comparison with conventional waveguides on solid substrates or in solutions, the MPE/MCW is propitious to the total internal reflection of light at the MCW/air interface, thus confining the ECL efficiently in MCW and improving the waveguide performance with an extremely low-loss coefficient of 4.49 × 10 -3 dB μm -1 . Moreover, by regulation of the gas atmosphere, active and passive waveguides can be resolved simultaneously inside MPE and in air. This MPE/MCW offers a unique advantage of spatially controlling and separating ECL signal readout from its generation, thus holding great promise in biosensing without or with less electrical/chemical disturbance.

Background: Owing to poor organ function reserve, older adults have a high risk of postoperative complications. However, there is no well-established system for assessing the risk of complications after hepatectomy in older adults., Methods: This study aimed to design a risk assessment tool to predict the risk of complications after hepatectomy in adults older than 75 years. A total of 326 patients were identified. A logistic regression equation was used to create the Risk Assessment System of Hepatectomy in Adults (RASHA) for the prediction of complications (Clavien‒Dindo classification ≥ II)., Results: Multivariate correlation analysis revealed that comorbidity (≥ 5 kinds of disease or < 5 kinds of disease, odds ratio [OR] = 5.552, P < 0.001), fatigue (yes or no, OR = 4.630, P = 0.009), Child‒Pugh (B or A, OR = 4.211, P = 0.004), number of liver segments to be removed (≥ 3 or ≤ 2, OR = 4.101, P = 0.001), and adjacent organ resection (yes or no, OR = 1.523, P = 0.010) were independent risk factors for postoperative complications after hepatectomy in older persons (aged ≥ 75 years). A binomial logistic regression model was established to evaluate the RASHA score (including the RASHA scale and RASHA formula). The area under the curve (AUC) for the RASHA scale was 0.916, and the cut-off value was 12.5. Fungal infection possesses the characteristics of high invasion depth and easy formation of a biofilm under the skin, which greatly hinders the treatment process. Here, traditional Chinese medicine moxa is carbonized and modified with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheets to synthesize carbonized moxa@ZnO (CMZ) with the dual response properties of yellow light (YL) and ultrasound (US) for synergistic antifungal therapy. CMZ with narrow bandgap can respond to long-wavelength YL that is highly safe and helpful for skin repair. Simultaneously, CMZ with a piezoelectric effect can further enhance the photocatalytic efficiency under the stimulation of US with high tissue penetration. Gene mechanism investigation indicates that when exposed to US and YL irradiation, CMZ-based therapy can adjust the expression of genes associated with fungal virulence, metabolic activity, mycelial growth and biofilm development, thus efficaciously eradicating planktonic Candida albicans ( C . albicans ) and mature biofilm. Importantly, despite the 1.00 cm thick tissue barrier, CMZ can rapidly eliminate 99.9% of C . albicans within 4 min, showing a satisfactory deep fungicidal efficacy. The in vivo therapeutic effect of this strategy is demonstrated in both open wound and deep cutaneous infection tests, speaking of dramatically better efficacy than the traditional fungicide ketoconazole (KTZ).

Despite adjuvant chemotherapy and endocrine therapy in luminal breast cancer (LBC), relapses are common. Addressing this, we aim to develop a prognostic model to refine adjuvant therapy strategies, particularly for patients at high recurrence risk. Notably, obesity profoundly affects the tumor microenvironment (TME) of LBC. However, it is unclear whether obesity-related biological features can effectively screen high-risk patients. Utilizing weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) on RNA sequencing (RNAseq) data, we identified seven obese LBC genes (OLGs) closely associated with patient prognosis. Subsequently, we developed a luminal obesity-gene clinical prognostic index (LOG-CPI), combining a 7-gene signature, TNM staging, and age. Its predictive efficacy was confirmed across validation datasets and a clinical cohort (5-year accuracy = 0.828, 0.760, 0.751, and 0.792, respectively). Results of toxicological studies indicate that phthalates and per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), 2 classes of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, may alter the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis. We evaluated the associations of urinary phthalate metabolites and serum PFAS during gestation and childhood with adolescent hair cortisol concentrations (pg/mg hair) at age 12 years, an integrative marker of HPA axis activity (n = 205 mother-child pairs; Cincinnati, Ohio; enrolled 2003-2006). We used quantile-based g-computation to estimate associations between mixtures of urinary phthalate metabolites or serum PFAS and hair cortisol. We also examined whether associations of individual phthalate metabolites or PFAS with cortisol varied by the timing of exposure. We found that a 1-quartile increase in all childhood phthalate metabolites was associated with 35% higher adolescent hair cortisol (phthalate mixture ψ = 0.13; 95% confidence interval: 0.03, 0.22); these associations were driven by monoethyl phthalate, monoisobutyl phthalate, and monobenzyl phthalate. We did not find evidence that phthalate metabolites during gestation or serum PFAS mixtures were related to adolescent hair cortisol concentrations. We found suggestive evidence that higher childhood concentrations of individual PFAS were related to higher and lower adolescent hair cortisol concentrations. Observational studies show high rates of switching away from cigarettes among adult purchasers of JUUL-brand electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS); data are needed to evaluate switching with JUUL in randomized general population trials. The association of ENDS flavor availability and switching is pertinent. This study assessed switch rates and smoking reduction among participants randomized to use JUUL in a choice of flavors or tobacco-only, compared to a condition provided smoking-cessation materials. U.S. adults who smoke cigarettes ( N = 837; M age [ SD ] = 45.99 years [11.48]; 18.76 cigarettes/day [ SD = 7.86]; 50.2% female) from an address-based representative panel were randomized to receive JUUL for 6 months (5.0% nicotine; only Virginia Tobacco [ N = 285] or choice of flavors [ N = 281]), or smoking-cessation materials (quit advice [QA]; N = 271). Self-reported past 30-day smoking and cigarette consumption were assessed at 1, 3, and 6 months. Repeated-measure regressions assessed differences in smoking outcomes between groups. Only 2% of participants were planning to quit smoking within 30 days. Across the 6-month intervention, participants randomized to JUUL (vs. QA) had 6.57-fold greater odds of reporting past 30-day switching (95% CI [3.72-11.63]). Participants in the JUUL (vs. QA) group smoked 27% fewer cigarettes/day versus baseline (Rate Ratio [95% CI] = 0.73 [0.68-0.77]). Over half (51.8%) of the Virginia Tobacco group used other flavors (36.7% nontobacco flavors), contaminating randomized flavor-conditions. JUUL flavor groups did not differ in smoking outcomes ( p > .48). Use of JUUL products may support complete switching away from cigarettes, including among those not ready to quit smoking. An in-depth analysis of the urban flood disaster level in response to different rainfall characteristics and Low Impact Development (LID) measures is of significant importance for addressing unfavorable management conditions and implementing effective flood control measures. This study proposes a dynamic urban flood simulation framework based on the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) and Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial analysis, incorporating an active inundation seed search algorithm. The framework is calibrated and validated using nine historical urban flood events. Subsequently, the impact of rainfall patterns on urban inundation under LID measures is analyzed based on the dynamic urban flood simulation framework. The results show that the urban flood simulation framework exhibits good applicability, with Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) values of 0.825 and 0.763 during the calibration and validation periods, respectively. The extent of inundation shows little variation for rainfall events with a return period greater than 20 years, and the location of flooding is minimally affected by rainfall patterns. LID measures have a decreasing effect on urban inundation control as the return period of rainfall increases, and there are variations in hydrological responses to different rainfall patterns under the same return period. For single-peak rainfall events with the same return period, the control rates of inundation volume, flow, and infiltration decrease as the rainfall peak coefficient increases, indicating a weakening effect of LID measures on flood control with increasing rainfall peak coefficient. Under the same return period conditions, LID measures exhibit the best runoff control effect for uniform rainfall, while their effectiveness is lower for double-peak rainfall events and single-peak rainfall events with an r = 0.75 coefficient. Oral cancer is a disease with high morbidity and mortality worldwide and greatly impacts the quality of life, especially in patients with advanced stages. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one of the most effective clinical treatments for oral cancers. However, most clinically applied photosensitizers have several deficiencies, including oxygen dependence, poor aqueous solubility, and a lack of tumor-targeting ability. Herein, the carrier-free multifunctional Sorafenib (Sor), chlorin e6 (Ce6), and Fe 3+ self-assembly co-delivery nanoparticles (Sor-Ce6 NPs) were constructed via combining a ferroptosis inducer Sor and a photosensitizer Ce6 for synergetic therapy. The as-synthesized Sor-Ce6 NPs presented excellent colloidal stability and water dispersity with good in vivo tumor-targeting ability. More significantly, the low dose of Sor-Ce6 NPs had little dark toxicity but produced significantly enhanced ROS and supplied O 2 sustainably to increase phototoxicity through ferroptosis pathway. Notably, the Sor-Ce6 NPs showed significantly higher in vitro and in vivo anti-tumor efficacy than the Sor/Ce6 mixture due to the improvement of cellular uptake and the incorporation of foreign Fe ions in the system, which also confer the T 1 magnetic resonance-guided imaging ability to the formed Sor-Ce6 NPs.
