Long-term variations in population structure, growth, mortality, exploitation rate, and recruitment pattern of two major commercial small pelagic fishes (CSPFs) ( Decapterus maruadsi and Trachurus japonicus ) are reported based on bottom trawl survey data collected during 2006-2020 in the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea. All individuals collected during each sampling quarter over a period of 15 years were subjected to laboratory-based analysis. In this study, the stock of D. maruadsi and T. japonicus inhabiting the Beibu Gulf was assessed using length-based methods (bootstrapped electronic length frequency analysis (ELEFAN)) to complete stock assessment in different fishery management periods (the division of fisheries management periods was based on China's input and output in the South China Sea offshore fisheries over 15 years, specifically divided into period I (2006-2010), period II (2011-2015), and period III (2016-2020)). The results showed that the mean body length, dominant body size, and estimated asymptotic length of two CSPFs decreased, whereas their growth coefficient decreased, indicating miniaturization and slower growth, respectively. Estimated exploitation rates and catching body length for two CSPFs indicated that both stocks in the Beibu Gulf were overexploited in period I and moderately exploited after 2011. These stocks were taking a good turn in status in period III, with the exploitation rate much lower than the initial period and reversing the downward trend in catching body length. Furthermore, the variations in the spawning season of the two CSPF stocks and their barely satisfactory expected yield indicated the complexity of the current fishery management in the Beibu Gulf. These results suggest that management measures to reduce fishing pressure may have a positive influence on the biological characteristics of those CSPFs in the Beibu Gulf; however, the stock structure already affected by overfishing will be a huge challenge for the conservation and restoration of fisheries resources in the future. Given that the current stocks of D. maruadsi and T. japonicus in the Beibu Gulf still have low first-capture body length ( L c ) and high fishing mortality ( F ) (compared to F 0.1 ), we identify a need to refine population structure by controlling fishing efforts and increasing catchable size, and more consideration should be given to the local fishery resource status in fisheries management.

Chlorella oil nanoliposomes (CO-NLP) were synthesized through ultrasonic injection with ethanol, and their physicochemical properties and hypolipidemic efficacy were systematically investigated. The results revealed that the mean particle size of CO-NLP was 86.90 nm and the encapsulation efficiency (EE) was 92.84%. Storage conditions at 4 °C were conducive to the stability of CO-NLP, maintaining an EE of approximately 90% even after 10 days of storage. The release profile of CO-NLP adhered more closely to the first-order kinetic model during in vitro assessments, exhibiting a slower release rate compared to free microalgae oil. In simulated in vitro digestion experiments, lipolytic reactions of CO-NLP were observed during intestinal digestion subsequent to nanoliposome administration. Notably, the inhibitory effect of CO-NLP on cholesterol esterase activity was measured at 85.42%. Additionally, the average fluorescence intensity of nematodes in the CO-NLP group was 52.17% lower than in the control group at a CO-NLP concentration of 500 μg/mL, which suggests a pronounced lipid-lowering effect of CO-NLP. Therefore, the CO-NLP exhibited characteristics of small and uniform particle size, elevated storage stability, gradual release during intestinal digestion, and a noteworthy hypolipidemic effect. These findings designate CO-NLP as a novel lipid-lowering active product, demonstrating potential for the development of functional foods.

The bacterial community plays an important role in biogeochemical cycles in marine sediment. However, little is known about the vertical profiles and co-occurrence patterns of bacterial community in sediment cores from the marine environment. In this study, five sediment cores were taken from a subtropical bay in China, heavily impacted by anthropogenic activities. The bacterial composition in sediment cores was investigated by using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. A principal coordinates analysis and an adonis analysis of the operational taxonomic unit (OTU) compositions showed that spatial variation, rather than vertical variation, determined the bacterial structure in sediment cores. The bacterial complexity varied greatly across the five sediment cores, and the rare taxa played an important role in supporting the stability of the bacterial network. The feeding habit of large-head hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) in the northern South China Sea was investigated through isotopic and stomach content analyses. The isotopic features of the hairtail at the same body size differed among regions, with the fish in coastal waters presenting higher δ 15 N and δ 13 C values compared to those in the open sea, indicating different trophic levels (TL), food habits, and isotopic baselines. According to the partial correlation of water depth with δ 15 N values, the sampling stations were divided into three regions based on the depth of water: coastal (20-40 m), near coastal (60-80 m), and open sea (100-200 m) regions. In the coastal region, the hairtail from stations affected by the Pearl River plume exhibited lower δ 15 N and δ 13 C values. The stomach content analysis indicated different feeding habits of the hairtail from different regions. The hairtail in the coastal and near coastal waters fed more on fish and less on crustaceans compared to the hairtail in the open sea. The relationship between δ 15 N and fish size exhibited two contrary patterns. First, the δ 15 N values increased with increasing preanal length in the hairtail sampled from the water depth of 30-40 m in section F (in fish with preanal length < 200 mm) and those samples from the water depth of 100-200 m. This finding reflected an ontogenetic shift in diet and TL. However, the δ 15 N values tended to decrease with the increasing preanal length of the hairtail samples collected from the water depth of 30-40 m in section F (fish with a preanal length of ~200-300 mm). Ocean microbiomes provide insightful details about the condition of water and the global impact of marine ecosystems. A fine-scale analysis of ocean microbes may shed light on the dynamics and function of the ocean microbiome community. In this study, we evaluated the changes in the community and function of marine bacteria, protists, and diatoms corresponding to different ocean depths using next-generation sequencing methods. We found that diatoms displayed a potential water-depth pattern in species richness (alpha diversity) and community composition (beta diversity). However, for bacteria and protists, there was no significant relationship between water depth and species richness. This may be related to the biological characteristics of diatoms. The photosynthesis of diatoms and their distribution may be associated with the fluctuating light regime in the underwater climate. Moreover, salinity displayed negative effects on the abundance of some diatom and bacterial groups, which indicates that salinity may be one of the factors restricting ocean microorganism diversity. In addition, compared to the global ocean microbiome composition, function, and antibiotic resistance genes, a water depth pattern due to the fine-scale region was not observed in this study. IMPORTANCE Fine-scale analysis of ocean microbes provides insights into the dynamics and functions of the ocean microbiome community. Here, using amplicon and metagenome sequencing methods, we found that diatoms in the northern South China Sea displayed a potential water-depth pattern in species richness and community composition, which may be related to their biological characteristics. The potential effects of the differences in geographic sites mainly occurred in the diatom and bacterial communities. Moreover, given the correlation between the environmental factors and relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), the study of ocean ARG distribution patterns should integrate the potential effects of environmental factors.

Microalgae is one of the most important components in the aquatic ecosystem, and they are increasingly used in food and medicine production for human consumption due to their rapid growth cycle and survival ability in the harsh environment. Now, the exploration of microalgae has been gradually deepening, mainly focused on the field of nutrition, medicine, and cosmetics. A great deal of studies has shown that microalgae have a variety of functions in regulating the body health and preventing disease, such as nitrogen fixation, antitumor, antivirus, antioxidation, anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic. Furthermore, microalgae can synthesize various high-valued bioactive substances, such as proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, and pigments. In this paper, we have briefly reviewed the research progress of main bioactive components in microalgae, proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, pigments, and other nutrients included, as well as their present application situation. Drainages in the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration (PRDUA) host vital aquatic ecosystems and face enormous pressures from human activities in one of the largest urban agglomerations in the world. Despite being crucial components of aquatic ecosystems, the interactions and assembly processes of the protistan community are rarely explored in areas with serious anthropogenic disturbance. To elucidate the mechanisms of these processes, we used environmental DNA sequencing of 18S rDNA to investigate the influence of environmental factors and species interactions on the protistan community and its assembly in drainages of the PRDUA during summer. The protistan community showed a high level of diversity and a marked spatial pattern in this region. Community assembly was driven primarily by stochastic processes based on the Sloan neutral community model, explaining 74.28%, 75.82%, 73.67%, 74.40% and 51.24% of community variations in the BJ (Beijiang), XJ (Xijiang), PRD (Pearl River Delta), PRE (Pearl River Estuary) areas and in total, respectively. Meanwhile, environmental variables including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, transparency, nutrients and land use were strongly correlated with the composition and assembly of the protistan community, explaining 40.40% of variation in the protistan community. Furthermore, the bacterial community was simultaneously analysed by the 16S rDNA sequencing. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that species interactions within bacteria (81.41% positive) or protists (82.80% positive), and those between bacteria and protists (50% positive and 50% negative) impacted the protistan community assembly. In summary, stochastic processes dominated, whereas species interactions and environmental factors also played important roles in shaping the protistan communities in drainages across the PRDUA. Patatin, the major protein found in potatoes, was purified and shows several isoforms. The essential amino acid content of patatin was ashighas 76%, indicating that it is a valuable protein source. Patatin was an O-linked glycoprotein that contained fucose monosaccharides, as well as mannose, rhamnose, glucose, galactose, xylose, and arabinose. Patatin had a fucosylated glycan structural feature, which strongly bound AAL (Aleuria aurantia Leukoagglutinin), a known fucose binding lectin. Moreover, thelipid metabolism regulatory effects of patatin on the fat catabolism, fat absorption, and inhibition of lipase activity were measured after high-fat feeding of zebrafish larvae. Results revealed that 37.0 μg/mL patatin promoted 23% lipid decomposition metabolism. Meanwhile patatin could inhibite lipase activity and fat absorption, whose effects accounted for half that of a positive control drug. Daya Bay is an ecologically and economically crucial semi-closed bay along the southern coast of China. It is proven to be a stressed ecosystem and therefore obviously vulnerable to further extrinsic disturbance. This study used fish data from bottom-trawl surveys, conducted from 1985 to 2018, to analyze variations in the fish community structure over the past 30 years. The results showed that warm-water fish species were overwhelmingly dominant during all years, suggesting the bay's tropical to subtropical characteristic. By 2015, the number of fish species had decreased by 29.44% of that caught in 1987, moreover, values of the Shannon-Wiener diversity index and the Margalef richness index were lower in 2015 compared to 2004. There were evident shifts in the fish community composition from pelagic to demersal species, as suggested by the dominant species found in springtime, the dominant families, and percentages denoting the numbers of species in the main orders. Average fish body weight in landings declined from 13.4 g to 7.58 g, the body sizes of four typical commercial fish species decreased by varying degrees over the last 30 years. Abundance-biomass comparison curves suggested that the Daya Bay fish community was more stressed in 2015 than in 2004 during all seasons, except winter. In general, the fish community structure in Daya Bay is consequently in an unsteady state. Multiple anthropogenic disturbances, such as fishing (including overfishing and changes in the main fishing gears), the destruction of natural habitats, pollutants, and anthropogenically induced temperature changes, are likely to have caused obvious shifts in the bay's fish community structure. Carangidae are ecologically and economically important marine fish. The complete mitogenomes of three Carangidae species ( Alectis indicus , Decapterus tabl , and Alepes djedaba ) were sequenced, characterized, and compared with 29 other species of the family Carangidae in this study. The length of the three mitogenomes ranged from 16,530 to 16,610 bp, and the structures included 2 rRNA genes ( 12S rRNA and 16S rRNA ), 1 control region (a non-coding region), 13 protein-coding genes, and 22 tRNA genes. Among the 22 tRNA genes, only tRNA-Ser (GCT) was not folded into a typical cloverleaf secondary structure and had no recognizable DHU stem. The full-length sequences and protein-coding genes (PCGs) of the mitogenomes of the three species all had obvious AT biases. The majority of the AT-skew and GC-skew values of the PCGs among the three species were negative, demonstrating bases T and C were more plentiful than A and G. Analyses of Ka/Ks and overall p-genetic distance demonstrated that ATP8 showed the highest evolutionary rate and COXI / COXII were the most conserved genes in the three species. The phylogenetic tree based on PCGs sequences of mitogenomes using maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses showed that three clades were divided corresponding to the subfamilies Caranginae, Naucratinae, and Trachinotinae. The monophyly of each superfamily was generally well supported. The divergence time analyses showed that Carangidae evolved during three geological periods, the Cretaceous, Paleogene, and Neogene. A. indicus began to differentiate from other species about 27.20 million years ago (Mya) in the early Miocene, while D. tabl (21.25 Mya) and A. djedaba (14.67 Mya) differentiated in the middle Oligocene.

Finfish cage culture is the most predominant form of mariculture. The rapid expansion of fish cage culture systems has raised concerns about their environmental impact, such as nutrient release. In this study, for the first time, we estimated the release of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from fish cage culture in Daya Bay, southern China, by constructing N and P budget models based on a mass balance principle. In addition, the contribution and importance of nutrients from fish culture and other nutrient sources, including submarine groundwater discharge, benthic sediments, local rivers, and atmospheric deposition were assessed. The annual amount of N and P released from fish cage culture was 205.6 metric tons (hereafter tons) of N and 39.2 tons of P, including 142.7 tons of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and 15.1 tons of dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP). Among the analyzed nutrient sources, the contributions of DIN and DIP from fish culture were 7.0% and 2.7%, respectively. For cages consuming conventional trash fish, 142 kg of N and 26 kg of P were released into the environment per ton of fish products, much higher than the values (72 kg N and 17.3 kg P) for cages using formulated feed. In fish culture, the dissolved nutrients were more N rich, but the particulate nutrients were more P rich. The ratio of cage-derived N and P was 21.1, higher than the ratio of coastal seawater (27.1), indicating that cage culture may also impact the local nutrient forms around farming regions. Oyster cultivation and harvest removed 126.3 tons of N and 35.1 tons of P from of the bay. Replacing trash fish with formulated feed and co-culturing of nutrient extractive species (e.g., bivalves, macroalgae) and deposit-feeding species (e.g., sea cucumber) in fish culture zones can be efficient nutrient mitigation strategies., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. The green macroalga Enteromorpha clathrata was pyrolyzed with or without catalysts at the temperature of 550 °C for producing high-quality bio-oil. The ZSM-5 and 1,2,3 mmol Mg-Ce/ZSM-5 catalysts were introduced to investigate the yields and components distribution of bio-oil. Increase of bio-oil production was obtained with the use of ZSM-5 and 1,2,3 mmol Mg-Ce/ZSM-5 catalysts. The 1 mmol Mg-Ce/ZSM-5 catalyst exhibited more promising property for promoting the relative content of C 5 -C 7 compounds, and decreasing the relative content of acids in bio-oil. The results suggested that E. clathrata had potential as pyrolysis feedstocks for producing the high-quality bio-oil with large amounts of C 5 -C 7 compounds and low relative content of acids when the 1 mmol Mg-Ce/ZSM-5 catalyst was used. The bioremediation capability and efficiency of large-scale Porphyra cultivation in the removal of inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus from open sea area were studied. The study took place in 2002-2004, in a 300 ha nori farm along the Lusi coast, Qidong County, Jiangsu Province, China, where the valuable rhodophyte seaweed Porphyra yezoensis has been extensively cultivated. Nutrient concentrations were significantly reduced by the seaweed cultivation. During the non-cultivation period of P. yezoensis, the concentrations of NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N and PO4-P were 43-61, 1-3, 33-44 and 1-3 micromol L(-1), respectively. Within the Porphyra cultivation area, the average nutrient concentrations during the Porphyra cultivation season were 20.5, 1.1, 27.9 and 0.96 micromol L(-1) for NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N and PO4-P, respectively, significantly lower than in the non-cultivation season (p<0.05). Compared with the control area, Porphyra farming resulted in the reduction of NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N and PO4-P by 50-94%, 42-91%, 21-38% and 42-67%, respectively. Nitrogen and phosphorus contents in dry Porphyra thalli harvested from the Lusi coast averaged 6.3% and 1.0%, respectively. There were significant monthly variations in tissue nitrogen content (p<0.05) but not in tissue phosphorus content (p>0.05). The highest tissue nitrogen content, 7.65% in dry wt, was found in December and the lowest value, 4.85%, in dry wt, in April. The annual biomass production of P. yezoensis was about 800 kg dry wt ha(-1) at the Lusi Coast in 2003-2004. An average of 14708.5 kg of tissue nitrogen and 2373.5 kg of tissue phosphorus in P. yezoensis biomass were harvested annually from 300 ha of cultivation from Lusi coastal water. These results indicated that Porphyra efficiently removed excess nutrient from nearshore eutrophic coastal areas. Therefore, large-scale cultivation of P. yezoensis could alleviate eutrophication in coastal waters economically.
