Background: To investigate interaction between behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids, hearing assistive technologies, and programmable shunt valve to understand how use of BTE hearing aids in patients who underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) surgery affects the settings of a programmable shunt valve., Methods: In this study, we investigated the magnetic field (MF) generation of 3 BTE hearing aids made by different companies, 1 frequency modulated system using telecoil technology, and 1 wireless microphone technology and their interactions with 2 programmable shunt valves. All measurements were made in a silent booth using 2 different models. The influence of MF strength in the distance modeling was investigated based on the distance from source auditory prostheses. The measurements were recorded using a Gauss meter. In the anatomical modeling, the change in the settings and interaction of the valve in a bust mannequin were investigated., Results: No MF created by BTE hearing aids was detected in the distance modeling. The highest value measured was 32.67 μT (<90 dB noise) when BTE hearing aids and frequency modulated systems were used, and this value decreased as the distance increased. No MF generation was observed at measurements done for distances >10 mm. In the anatomical modeling, the settings of both programmable valves did not change under all acoustic conditions., Conclusions: This is the first study to our knowledge examining the MF created by hearing aids and hearing assistive technologies and its impact on programmable valves and variations in their settings. Our findings showed that it is safe to use BTE hearing aids, frequency modulated systems, and wireless microphone technologies in patients with a programmable VPS., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Inc. To evaluate whether speech recognition in noise differs according to whether a wireless remote microphone is connected to just the cochlear implant (CI) or to both the CI and to the hearing aid (HA) in bimodal CI users. The second aim was to evaluate the additional benefit of the directional microphone mode compared with the omnidirectional microphone mode of the wireless microphone. This prospective study measured Speech Recognition Thresholds (SRT) in babble noise in a 'within-subjects repeated measures design' for different listening conditions. Eighteen postlingually deafened adult bimodal CI users. No difference in speech recognition in noise in the bimodal listening condition was found between the wireless microphone connected to the CI only and to both the CI and the HA. An improvement of 4.1 dB was found for switching from the omnidirectional microphone mode to the directional mode in the CI only condition. The use of a wireless microphone improved speech recognition in noise for bimodal CI users. The use of the directional microphone mode led to a substantial additional improvement of speech perception in noise for situations with one target signal.

Objective: Although laparoscopic surgery has become widespread, effective and efficient education in laparoscopic surgery is difficult. Instructive laparoscopy videos with appropriate annotations are ideal for initial training in laparoscopic surgery; however, the method we use at our institution for creating laparoscopy videos with audio is not generalized, and there have been no detailed explanations of any such method. Our objectives were to demonstrate the feasibility of low-cost simple methods for recording surgical videos with audio and to perform a preliminary safety evaluation when obtaining these recordings during operations., Design: We devised a method for the synchronous recording of surgical video with real-time audio in which we connected an amplifier and a wireless microphone to an existing endoscopy system and its equipped video-recording device. We tested this system in 209 cases of laparoscopic surgery in operating rooms between August 2010 and July 2011 and prospectively investigated the results of the audiovisual recording method and examined intraoperative problems., Setting: Numazu City Hospital in Numazu city, Japan., Participants: Surgeons, instrument nurses, and medical engineers., Results: In all cases, the synchronous input of audio and video was possible. The recording system did not cause any inconvenience to the surgeon, assistants, instrument nurse, sterilized equipment, or electrical medical equipment. Statistically significant differences were not observed between the audiovisual group and control group regarding the operating time, which had been divided into 2 slots-performed by the instructors or by trainees (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: This recording method is feasible and considerably safe while posing minimal difficulty in terms of technology, time, and expense. We recommend this method for both surgical trainees who wish to acquire surgical skills effectively and medical instructors who wish to teach surgical skills effectively., (Copyright © 2015 Association of Program Directors in Surgery.
