Purpose: In this manuscript, the abbreviation TG is defined as persons who identify as transgender, GNC is defined as persons who identify as gender nonconforming, and CG is defined as persons who identify as cisgender. TG and GNC (e.g., nonbinary), are those whose gender identity and sex assigned at birth do not align, as opposed to CG. This study describes drug poisonings among TG, GNC, and CG captured in the Toxicology Investigators Consortium (ToxIC) Core Registry during 2017-2021., Methods: Authors conducted a secondary data analysis of medical toxicology physician consultations involving intentional exposures (i.e., use with the knowledge of the exposed person) within the ToxIC Core Registry from 2017 through 2021. Demographic characteristics, exposure intent, and reported drug classes are reported by gender identity and sex assigned at birth., Findings: From a total of 15,800 medical toxicology consultations, 213 (1.3%) involved both TG (n = 187, 1.2%) and GNC (n = 26, 0.2%), and 15,587 (98.7%) involved CG. Among TG, 128 (68.8%) were transgender men, 58 (31.2%) transgender women. Sixty-two percent of TG/GNC (n = 132) and 34.8% of CG (n = 5,428) were aged ≤18 years. Reported intent for exposure (i.e., self-harm and misuse/harmful use) differed proportionally across both sexes assigned at birth and gender identity among transgender men and cisgender men., Implications: In the ToxIC Core Registry, the consultations varied proportionally by age group across TG/GNC and CG, with more than half of TG/GNC aged ≤18 years. The proportion of consultations also varied by intent across TG/GNC and CG. Objectives. To examine trends in overdose deaths by intent and drug category to better understand the recent decrease in overdose suicides amid the overdose epidemic. Methods. We examined trends in rates of overdose deaths by intent (unintentional, suicide, or undetermined) across 9 drug categories from 1999 to 2022 using US National Vital Statistics System mortality data. Results. Unintentional overdoses involving synthetic opioids, polydrug toxicity involving synthetic opioids, psychostimulants, and cocaine increased exponentially with annual percentage changes ranging from 15.0% to 104.9% during 2010 to 2022. The death rates also increased for suicides involving these drugs, especially for psychostimulants (annual percentage change = 12.9% for 2010-2022; P  < .001). However, these drugs accounted for relatively small percentages of overdose suicides. The leading drug categories among suicides were antidepressants, prescription opioids, and benzodiazepines, though these deaths have decreased or leveled off in recent years. Conclusions. Different drugs commonly involved in suicides and unintentional overdoses may contribute to their divergent trends. Public Health Implications. Amid the overdose epidemic, safe storage of medications remains a crucial strategy to prevent overdose suicides. The large increases in suicides involving psychostimulants warrant monitoring. Background: Integrating and advancing health equity are a core tenant of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's mission. Comprehensive frameworks that clearly conceptualise equity are needed to prioritise and inform the advancement of health equity within public health., Methods: To help meet this need, the investigative team developed The Continuum of Health Equity Practice & Science (The Continuum). The Continuum was developed in two phases: (1) an initial survey distributed to internal CDC Division of Injury Prevention investigators, and (2) a review of public health frameworks and the current health equity evidence base., Results: The Continuum is a framework that includes seven key components of health equity and ultimately aims to guide public health practice and research towards the advancement of health equity. To illustrate its usefulness, we provide an example using adolescent suicide for each component of The Continuum and demonstrate how this may inform efforts to advance health equity., Conclusion: With a specific focus on conceptualising health equity and addressing systemic inequities, The Continuum may be used to inform efforts to advance equity in injury prevention and beyond., Competing Interests: Competing interests: None declared., (© Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2024. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among high school-aged youths aged 14-18 years. The 2021 suicide rate for this age group was 9.0 per 100,000 population. Updating a previous analysis of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey during 2009-2019, this report uses 2019 and 2021 data to examine high school students' reports of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Prevalence estimates are reported by grade, race and ethnicity, sexual identity, and sex of sexual contacts. Unadjusted logistic regression models were used to calculate prevalence differences comparing 2019 to 2021 and prevalence ratios comparing suicidal behavior between subgroups across demographic characteristics to a referent group. From 2019 to 2021, female students had an increased prevalence of seriously considered attempting suicide (from 24.1% to 30%), an increase in making a suicide plan (from 19.9% to 23.6%), and an increase in suicide attempts (from 11.0% to 13.3%). In addition, from 2019 to 2021, Black or African American (Black), Hispanic or Latino (Hispanic), and White female students had an increased prevalence of seriously considered attempting suicide. In 2021, Black female students had an increased prevalence of suicide attempts and Hispanic female students had an increased prevalence of suicide attempts that required medical treatment compared with White female students. Prevalence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors remained stable overall for male students from 2019 to 2021. A comprehensive approach to suicide prevention with a focus on health equity is needed to address these disparities and reduce prevalence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors for all youths. Parents have an important role in the promotion of healthy adolescent behaviors that can influence positive developmental trajectories and health outcomes. Parental monitoring is a central component of the parent-child relationship with the potential to reduce adolescent risk behaviors. Data from CDC's 2021 nationally representative Youth Risk Behavior Survey were used to describe the prevalence of parental monitoring reported by U.S. high school students and examine associations between parental monitoring and adolescent behaviors and experiences. Behaviors and experiences included sexual behaviors, substance use, violence, and indicators of poor mental health. This report marks the first national assessment of parental monitoring among U.S. high school students. Point prevalence estimates and corresponding 95% CIs were generated in the bivariate analyses between parental monitoring and the outcomes, stratified by demographic characteristics (sex, race and ethnicity, sexual identity, and grade). Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to estimate the main effects of parental monitoring (categorized as high = always or most of the time and low = never, rarely, or sometimes) for each outcome, controlling for all demographics. Overall, 86.4% of students reported that their parents or other adults in their family know where they are going or with whom they will be all or most of the time. Reports of high parental monitoring were protective for all risk behaviors and experiences, with models controlling for sex, race and ethnicity, sexual identity, and grade.
