Carbon isotope discrimination (∆) in leaf biomass (∆ BL ) and tree rings (∆ TR ) provides important proxies for plant responses to climate change, specifically in terms of intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE). However, the nonphotosynthetic 12 C/ 13 C fractionation in plant tissues has rarely been quantified and its influence on iWUE estimation remains uncertain. We derived a comprehensive, ∆ based iWUE model (iWUE com ) which includes nonphotosynthetic fractionations (d) and characterized tissue-specific d-values based on global compilations of data of ∆ BL , ∆ TR and real-time ∆ in leaf photosynthesis (∆ online ). iWUE com was further validated with independent datasets. ∆ BL was larger than ∆ online by 2.53‰, while ∆ BL and ∆ TR showed a mean offset of 2.76‰, indicating that ∆ TR is quantitatively very similar to ∆ online . Applying the tissue-specific d-values (d BL  = 2.5‰, d TR  = 0‰), iWUE estimated from ∆ BL aligned well with those estimated from ∆ TR or gas exchange. ∆ BL and ∆ TR showed a consistent iWUE trend with an average CO 2 sensitivity of 0.15 ppm ppm -1 during 1975-2015. Accounting for nonphotosynthetic fractionations improves the estimation of iWUE based on isotope records in leaf biomass and tree rings, which is ultimate for inferring changes in carbon and water cycles under historical and future climate., (© 2024 The Author(s). The response of mesophyll conductance (g m ) to CO 2 plays a key role in photosynthesis and ecosystem carbon cycles under climate change. Despite numerous studies, there is still debate about how g m responds to short-term CO 2 variations. Here we used multiple methods and looked at the relationship between stomatal conductance to CO 2 (g sc ) and g m to address this aspect. We measured chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and online carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) at different CO 2 mole fractions in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) leaves. The variable J and Δ based methods showed that g m decreased with an increase in CO 2 mole fraction, and so did stomatal conductance. There were linear relationships between g m and g sc across CO 2 mole fractions. g m obtained from A-C i curve fitting method was higher than that from the variable J method and was not representative of g m under the growth CO 2 concentration. g m could be estimated by empirical models analogous to the Ball-Berry model and the USO model for stomatal conductance. Conjugative plasmids are important vectors of mobile antibiotic resvistance genes (ARGs), facilitating their horizontal transfer within the environment. While composting is recognized as an effective method to reduce antibiotics and ARGs in animal manure, its impact on the bacterial host communities containing antibiotic-resistant plasmids remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the permissiveness of bacterial community during composting when challenged with multidrug-resistant conjugative RP4 plasmids, employing Pseudomonas putida as the donor strain. Ultimately, this represents the first exploration of the effects of aeration rates on the range of RP4 plasmid transfer hosts. Transconjugants were analyzed through fluorescent reporter gene-based fluorescence-activated cell sorting and Illumina sequencing. Overall, aeration rates were found to influence various physicochemical parameters of compost, including temperature, pH, total organic matter, total nitrogen, and potassium. Regarding RP4 plasmid host bacteria, the dominant phylum was determined to shift from Bacteroidetes in the raw material to Proteobacteria in the compost. Notably, a moderate-intensity aeration rate (0.05 L/min/L) was found to be more effective in reducing the diversity and richness of the RP4 plasmid host bacterial community. Following composting, the total percentage of dominant transconjugant-related genera decreased by 66.15-76.62%. Ultimately, this study determined that the aeration rate negatively impacts RP4 plasmid host abundance primarily through alterations to the environmental factors during composting. Background: Several studies have investigated the relationship between serum lactate dehydrogenase-to-albumin ratio (LAR) and the prognosis of cancers. However, no studies have explored the association between serum LAR and the survival of oral cancer (OC). This study was aimed to determine the association of serum LAR with the overall survival (OS) of OC., Methods: One hundred and ninety patients with OC were included in this study between January 2018 and December 2019. Log rank test and Kaplan-Meier method were used to compare the survival rate of OC between the low LAR group and the high LAR group. The association between serum LAR and the survival of OC patients was determined via univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses., Results: Kaplan-Meier analysis and Log rank test indicated that the OS rate in low LAR group was significantly higher than that in high LAR group ( P < 0.05). Univariate cox analysis showed that TNM III-IV stage, serum LDH > 162 U/L, and serum LAR > 3.79 were significantly associated with the OS of OC patients. Multivariate Cox analysis suggested that the TNM III-IV stage (HR, 2.317; 95% CI, 1.423-3.774, P = 0.001) and serum LAR > 3.79 (HR, 5.138; 95% CI, 2.245-11.756, P = 0.000) were independently related with poor OS of OC patients., Conclusion: High serum LAR (>3.79) is an independent predictor of adverse prognosis in OC patients. Plants have intricate mechanisms that tailor their defence responses to pathogens. WRKY transcription factors play a pivotal role in plant immunity by regulating various defence signalling pathways. Many WRKY genes are transcriptionally activated upon pathogen attack, but how their functions are regulated after transcription remains elusive. Here, we show that OsWRKY7 functions as a crucial positive regulator of rice basal immunity against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). The activity of OsWRKY7 was regulated at both translational and post-translational levels. Two translational products of OsWRKY7 were generated by alternative initiation. The full-length OsWRKY7 protein is normally degraded by the ubiquitin-proteasome system but was accumulated following elicitor or pathogen treatment, whereas the alternate product initiated from the downstream in-frame start codon was stable. Both the full and alternate OsWRKY7 proteins have transcriptional activities in yeast and rice cells, and overexpression of each form enhanced resistance to Xoo infection. Furthermore, disruption of the main AUG in rice increased the endogenous translation of the alternate stabilized form of OsWRKY7 and enhanced bacterial blight resistance. This study provides insights into the coordination of alternative translation and protein stability in the regulation of plant growth and basal defence mediated by the OsWRKY7 transcription factor, and also suggests a promising strategy to breed disease-resistant rice by translation initiation control., (© 2023 The Authors. Aims: The small organic molecular compounds with biological activity containing C-C and C-N or C-O bonding were efficiently prepared without catalyst and solvent in the hydrothermal synthesis reactor., Objectives: Our goal was to explore new applications for the more environmentally friendly and efficient synthesis of bis(indolyl)methyl, xanthene, quinazolinone, and N-heterocyclic derivatives in hydrothermal synthesis reactors under solvent-free and catalyst-free conditions., Methods: A greener and more efficient method was successfully developed for the synthesis of bis(indolyl)methyl, heteroanthracene, quinazolinone, and N-heterocyclic derivatives using a hydrothermal synthesis reactor in a solvent- and catalyst-free manner., Results: In a hydrothermal synthesis reactor, bis(indoyl)methyl, xanthene, quinazolinone, and N-heterocyclic derivatives were synthesized without catalysts and solvents., Conclusion: Overall, it is proved once again that the catalyst-free and solvent-free synthesis method has universal value and is a more ideal and environmentally friendly new method, especially the hydrothermal reactor for synthesis., (Copyright© Bentham Science Publishers; For any queries, please email at epub@benthamscience.net.)

Our ability to predict temperature responses of leaf respiration in light and darkness (R L and R Dk ) is essential to models of global carbon dynamics. While many models rely on constant thermal sensitivity (characterized by Q 10 ), uncertainty remains as to whether Q 10 of R L and R Dk are actually similar. We measured short-term temperature responses of R L and R Dk in immature and mature leaves of two evergreen tree species, Castanopsis carlesii and Ormosia henry in an open field. R L was estimated by the Kok method, the Yin method and a newly developed Kok-iterC c method. When estimated by the Yin and Kok-iterC c methods, R L and R Dk had similar Q 10 (c. 2.5). The Kok method overestimated both Q 10 and the light inhibition of respiration. R L /R Dk was not affected by leaf temperature. Acclimation of respiration in summer was associated with a decline in basal respiration but not in Q 10 in both species, which was related to changes in leaf nitrogen content between seasons. Q 10 of R L and R Dk in mature leaves were 40% higher than in immature leaves. Background: Tunneled central venous catheters (tCVC) exchange may be difficult in some situations. We retrospectively report our preliminary experience of a novel extra-catheter guide wire technique for exchange of dysfunctional tCVC., Materials and Methods: Retrospectively analyze the demographics, treatment details and outcomes data of 39 patients received tCVC exchange from January 2018 to January 2019. According to whether guide wire could pass through the catheter lumen, patients were divided into in-catheter group and extra-catheter group. The technical successful rate, peri-operative complications, 1-month and 6-month catheter flow rate was recorded and compared between the 2 groups., Results: The final study population consists of 39 patients, including 16 in-catheter group and 23 extra-catheter group. The technical successful rate was 100% in both groups. All patients achieved restoration of line patency and completed at least 1 hemodialysis section. The 1-month (267.69 ± 20.12 vs. 274.13 ± 17.69, p  = 0.604) and 6-month (255.81 ± 12.93 vs. 256.97 ± 11.20, p  = 0.403) catheter flow rate was comparable between the 2 groups., Conclusion: The novel extra-catheter guide wire technique was helpful for in situ exchange of dysfunctional tunneled central venous hemodialysis catheters, especially when the guide wire could not pass through the catheter lumen., Competing Interests: Declaration of conflicting interestsThe author(s) declared no potential conflicts of interest with respect to the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article.

A polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) magnetic microsphere was designed for one-step purification and immobilization of a novel carbonyl reductase (RLSR5) from recombinant Escherichia coli lysate. The hydrophobic core of this microsphere was composed of a highly biocompatible polymer, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx), in which magnetic Fe 3 O 4 particles were embedded during solvent evaporation. The hydrophilic shell of the fusion protein formed by PHA particle-binding protein (PhaP) and RLSR5 (PR) was expressed in recombinant E. coli. The magnetic core of Fe 3 O 4 @PHBHHx directly purified the hydrophilic shell from the E. coli lysate, and the two self-assembled to form Fe 3 O 4 @PHBHHx-PR through hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions, eliminating the separation of the fusion protein. The microstructure, magnetic properties, morphology, size, and dispersion of Fe 3 O 4 @PHBHHx-PR were investigated by XRD, VSM, SEM, TEM, elemental mapping and DLS. It was found that Fe 3 O 4 @PHBHHx-PR correctly assembled, with a well dispersed spherical structure at the nanoscale and superparamagnetism properties. The amount of RLSR5 immobilized on PHA microspheres reached 121.9 mg/g. The Fe 3 O 4 @PHBHHx-PR was employed to synthesize (R)-tolvaptan with 99 % enantiomeric excess and 97 % bioconversion efficiency, and the catalyst maintained 78.6 % activity after 10 recovery cycles. The increasing threat of nerve agents has prompted the need for gas sensors with fast response, high sensitivity, and good stability. In this work, the hexafluoroisopropanol functional group was modified on a porous aromatic framework material, which served as a sensitive material for detecting dimethyl methylphosphonate. A nerve agent sensor was made by coating sensitive materials on a surface acoustic wave device. Lots of pores in sensitive materials effectively increase the specific surface area and provide channels for diffusion of gas molecules. The introduction of hexafluoroisopropanols enables the sensor to specifically adsorb dimethyl methylphosphonate and improves the selectivity of the sensor. As a result, the developed gas sensor was able to detect dimethyl methylphosphonate at 0.8 ppm with response/recovery times of 29.8/43.8 s, and the detection limit of the gas sensor is about 0.11 ppm. The effects of temperature and humidity on the sensor were studied. The results show that the baseline of the sensor has a linear relationship with temperature and humidity, and the temperature and humidity have a significant effect on the response of the sensor. Furthermore, a device for real-time detection of nerve agent is reported. This work provides a new strategy for developing a gas sensor for detecting nerve agents.

Halogenated volatile organic compounds (abbreviated as X-VOCs) are a class of hazardous gas pollutants that are difficult to detect due to their thermal stability, chemical inertness, and poisoning effect on gas sensors at high temperatures. In this work, room-temperature detection of X-VOCs is achieved using a surface acoustic wave (SAW) gas sensor coated with a 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsufonyl)imide (EMIM-TFSI)-based ionic gel film. We experimentally verify that the high selectivity of the ionic gel-based SAW gas sensor for X-VOCs is due to the presence of halogen atoms in these gas molecules. Meanwhile, the sensor has very little response to common organic gases such as ethanol, isopropanol, and acetone, reflecting a low cross-sensitivity to nonhalogenated VOCs. This unique advantage shows potential applications in selective detection of X-VOCs and is validated by comparison with a commercial metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor. Furthermore, the internal sensing mechanism is explored by the density functional theory (DFT) method. The simulation results demonstrate that the X-VOC molecules are highly polarized by the inductive effect of halogen atom substitution, which is beneficial for being adsorbed by the EMIM-TFSI ionic liquid via dipole-dipole interaction.

Acid-protonated crystalline silicon carbide-supported carbon nitride photocatalytic composites were successfully prepared by the impregnation-heat treatment method (P-g-C 3 N 4 /β-SiC and P-g-C 3 N 4 /α-SiC). The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis-DRS) photoluminescence (PL), etc . The results of SEM showed that the P-g-C 3 N 4 /β-SiC and P-g-C 3 N 4 /α-SiC materials were transformed from large-area lamellar structures to uniform and dispersed lamellar particles. The UV-vis-DRS and PL showed that the recombination probability of photogenerated electron-hole pairs of P-g-C 3 N 4 /β-SiC and P-g-C 3 N 4 /α-SiC samples decreased and the band gap increased. The results of photocatalytic degradation of alizarin red S (ARS), acid fuchsin (AF), and basic fuchsin (BF) showed that the samples P-g-C 3 N 4 /β-SiC and P-g-C 3 N 4 /α-SiC had excellent photocatalytic degradation performance. It is worth noting that the degradation performance of the sample P-g-C 3 N 4 /β-SiC on the three dyes is better than that of P-g-C 3 N 4 /α-SiC. The electron spin resonance spectra (ESR) results showed that the ˙O 2 - and ˙OH produced by the two catalysts during the dye degradation process played a leading role in the degradation reaction. Background: Postoperative new atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a commonly observed complication after off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery (OPCABG), and models based on radiomics features of epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) on non-enhanced computer tomography (CT) to predict the occurrence of POAF after OPCABG remains unclear. This study aims to establish and validate models based on radiomics signature to predict POAF after OPCABG., Methods: Clinical characteristics, radiomics signature and features of non-enhanced CT images of 96 patients who underwent OPCABG were collected. The participants were divided into a training and a validation cohort randomly, with a ratio of 7:3. Clinical characteristics and EAT CT features with statistical significance in the multivariate logistic regression analysis were utilized to build the clinical model. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithm was used to identify significant radiomics features to establish the radiomics model. The combined model was constructed by integrating the clinical and radiomics models., Results: The area under the curve (AUC) of the clinical model in the training and validation cohorts were 0.761 (95% CI: 0.634-0.888) and 0.797 (95% CI: 0.587-1.000), respectively. The radiomics model showed better discrimination ability than the clinical model, with AUC of 0.884 (95% CI: 0.806-0.961) and 0.891 (95% CI: 0.772-1.000) respectively for the training and the validation cohort. The combined model performed best and exhibited the best predictive ability among the three models, with AUC of 0.922 (95% CI: 0.853-0.990) in the training cohort and 0.913 (95% CI: 0.798-1.000) in the validation cohort. The calibration curve demonstrated strong concordance between the predicted and actual observations in both cohorts. Furthermore, the Hosmer-Lemeshow test yielded p value of 0.241 and 0.277 for the training and validation cohorts, respectively, indicating satisfactory calibration., Conclusions: The superior performance of the combined model suggests that integrating of clinical characteristics, radiomics signature and features on non-enhanced CT images of EAT may enhance the accuracy of predicting POAF after OPCABG., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (Copyright: © 2023 The Author(s). The climbing mouse is a rare, small mammal listed as an endangered species on the China species red list. Molecular phylogenetic analyses and the evolutionary history of the genus remain unexplored because of the extreme difficulty in capturing individuals and their narrow distribution. Here, we collected 44 specimens, sequenced one mitochondrial and eight nuclear genes, and integrated morphological approaches to estimate phylogenetic relationships, delimit species boundaries, and explore evolutionary history. Molecular analyses and morphological results supported the validity of these four species. Here, we describe two new species, Vernaya meiguites sp. nov. and Vernaya nushanensis sp. nov., and recognize Vernaya foramena , previously considered a subspecies of Vernaya fulva , as a valid species. The particle-size distribution of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) elements is crucial in evaluating their environmental behavior and health risks, and exposure to the fecal microbiome via particle mass (PM) is an important route of transmission of AMR from livestock to humans. However, few studies have explored the association between air and fecal AMR in farm environments from the perspective of particle-size stratification. We collected feces and PMs of different sizes from layer and broiler farms, quantified antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and human pathogenic bacteria (HPB) using Droplet digital PCR (ddPCR), and analyzed the bacterial communities based on 16S rRNA sequencing. The particle-size distributions of 16S rRNA and AMR elements were similar and generally increased with larger particle sizes in chicken farms. In broiler farms, we observed a bimodal distribution with two peaks at 5.8-9.0 μm and 3.3-4.7 μm. The dominant airborne bacterial phyla were Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. The dominant phyla in the feces were the same as those in the air, but the order of relative abundance varied. The particle-size distributions of specific bacterial genera differed between the animal-farm types. Overall, the degree of association between feces and different particulates increased with increasing particle size. The microbial communities in the coarse particles were similar to those in fecal samples. Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus spp., Campylobacter spp., and sul 2 (sulfonamide ARGs) tended to attach to small particles. We highlight the particle size-specific relationship between fecal and air microbes involving ARGs, MGEs, and HPB and provide valuable information for comprehensively assessing the transmission of fecal microorganisms through the airpath and its environmental and occupational health risks., (© 2023. In recent years, the increasing severity of chemical warfare agent threats to public safety has led to a growing demand for gas sensors capable of detecting these compounds. However, gas sensors used for the detection of chemical warfare agents must overcome limitations in sensitivity, selectivity, and reaction speed. This paper presents a sensitive material and a surface acoustic gas sensor for detecting dimethyl methyl phosphonate. The results demonstrate that the sensor exhibits good selectivity and could detect 80 ppb of dimethyl methyl phosphonate within 1 min. As an integral component of the sensor, the microstructure and adsorption mechanism of silica molecular imprinting material were studied in detail. The results show that the template molecule could significantly affect the pore volume, specific surface area, and hydroxyl density of mesoporous materials. These properties further affect the performance of the sensor. This study provides a valuable case study for the design of sensitive materials.

Hyperuricemia closely correlates with the development of atherosclerosis, but little is known of the mechanism by which atherosclerosis progression occurs in hyperuricemia. Atherosclerosis appears to involve pyroptosis, an emerging mechanism of proinflammatory regulated cell death. This study tested the hypothesis that pyroptosis underlies the relationship between hyperuricemia and atherosclerosis, using ApoE -/- mice (a model of atherosclerosis), human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and human atherosclerotic arterial samples. We found that hyperuricemia can aggravate the aortic atherosclerotic plaque-load in ApoE -/- mice and promote endothelial cell pyroptosis. Additionally, hyperuricemia can increase the levels of serum inflammatory factors (including IL-1β and IL-18). Exposure to lipopolysaccharide plus a high concentration of soluble uric acid (≥12 mg/dL) induced cell pyroptosis in HUVECs, as evidenced by increased expression of pyroptosis-related proteins and elevated release of lactate dehydrogenase (a marker of tissue damage). Further, MCC950, a selective nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptor 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome inhibitor, and N-acetyl- l-cysteine, an antioxidant, attenuated HUVEC pyroptosis by inhibiting activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome and production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Finally, we detected significantly higher expression of pyroptosis-associated proteins in carotid specimens from patients with hyperuricemia. Collectively, our findings suggest that hyperuricemia can aggravate endothelial cell pyroptosis in aortic atherosclerotic plaques, promoting the development of atherosclerosis. Background: Microsatellite instability (MSI) is the first pan-cancer biomarker approved to guide immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy for MSI-high (MSI-H) solid tumors. In lung cancer, the MSI-H frequency is very low, and the genetic characteristics and prognosis of lung cancer with MSI-H were rarely reported., Methods: Next-generation sequencing and immunohistochemistry were used detect MSI status, tumor mutation burden (TMB) and PD-L1 expression., Results: Among 12,484 lung cancer patients screened, 66 were found with MSI-H, the proportion was as low as 0.5%. Compared with Microsatellite stability (MSS), TMB was higher in MSI-H lung cancer patients, while PD-L1 expression showed no considerable difference between MSI-H and MSS. After propensity score matching, compared with MSS, the most common companion mutations in MSI-H were TP53, BRCA2, TGFBR2, PTEN and KMT2C. The basal levels of salicylic acid (SA) vary dramatically among plant species. In the shoot, for example, rice contains almost 100 times higher SA levels than Arabidopsis. Despite its high basal levels, neither the biosynthetic pathway nor the biological functions of SA are well understood in rice. Combining with metabolite analysis, physiological, and genetic approaches, we found that the synthesis of basal SA in rice shoot is dependent on OsAIM1, which encodes a beta-oxidation enzyme in the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) pathway. Compromised SA accumulation in the Osaim1 mutant led to a lower shoot temperature than wild-type plants. However, this shoot temperature defect resulted from increased transpiration due to elevated steady-state stomatal aperture in the mutant. Furthermore, the high basal SA level is required for sustained expression of OsWRKY45 to modulate the steady-state stomatal aperture and shoot temperature in rice. Taken together, these results provide the direct genetic evidence for the critical role of the PAL pathway in the biosynthesis of high basal level SA in rice, which plays an important role in the regulation of steady-state stomatal aperture to promote fitness under stress conditions., (© 2023 The Authors. Urbanization-induced phenological changes have received considerable attention owing to their implications for determining urban ecosystem productivity and predicting the response of plants and ecosystem carbon cycles to future climate change. However, inconsistent rural-urban gradients in plant phenology remain, and phenological drivers other than temperature are poorly understood. In this study, we simultaneously observed the micro-climate and spring leaf phenology of seven woody plant species at 13 parks along a rural-urban gradient in Beijing, China. The minimum (T min ) and mean (T mean ) air temperature and the minimum (VPD min ) and mean (VPD mean ) vapor pressure deficit increased significantly along the rural-urban gradient, but the maximum air temperature (T max ) and maximum vapor pressure deficit (VPD max ) did not. All observed leaf phenological phases for the seven species were significantly advanced along the rural-urban gradient by 0.20 to 1.02 days/km. Advances in the occurrence of leaf phenological events were significantly correlated with increases in T mean (accounting for 57-59% variation), T min (21-26%), VPD min (12-16%), and VPD mean (3-5%), but not with changes in T max or VPD max . Advances in spring leaf phenology along the rural-urban gradient differed between non-native species and native species and between shrubs and trees. The reason may be mainly that the sensitivities of spring leaf phenology to micro-climate differ with species origin and growth form. The lacked-teeth pygmy weasel, Mustela aistoodonnivalis Wu & Kao, 1991, was originally described as being from Taibai Mountain and Zhashui county, Shaanxi, China. Subsequently, it was considered a subspecies or synonym of Mustela nivalis . In a faunal survey of northwestern Sichuan, eight specimens of M. aistoodonnivalis were collected. A molecular phylogenetic analysis of one mitochondrial and six nuclear genes clustered the specimens as a distinct clade and not with M. nivalis . Morphologically, the lack of the second lower molar differentiated them from M. nivalis , and genetic distances were typical of discrete species. Obesity and periodontitis are significantly related, and the visceral adiposity index (VAI) is an important indicator of obesity. This study aimed to investigate the association between VAI and periodontitis. The study included participants from the 2009-2014 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey who received a complete periodontal exam and VAI record. Periodontitis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-American Academy of Periodontology periodontitis case definitions, is categorized into the following: no periodontitis, moderate periodontitis, mild periodontitis, and severe periodontitis. Hierarchical analysis, multivariable logistic regression, and restricted cubic spline regression were conducted to investigate the relationship between periodontitis and VAI in adults. There was no significant relationship between VAI and the prevalence of periodontitis in all age groups (P = 0.08). Age-stratified analysis showed a significant association between periodontitis and VAI in adults aged 40-50 years (P < 0.001). After adjusting for all covariates, the association between periodontitis and VAI remained significant in the 40-50-years age group (the trend P value = 0.014). Restricted cubic spline analysis showed a non-linear relationship between VAI and periodontitis (P for non-linear = 0.002). Evaluating leaf day respiration rate (RL), which is believed to differ from that in the dark (RDk), is essential for predicting global carbon cycles under climate change. Several studies have suggested that atmospheric CO2 impacts RL. However, the magnitude of such an impact and associated mechanisms remain uncertain. To explore the CO2 effect on RL, wheat (Triticum aestivum) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) plants were grown under ambient (410 ppm) and elevated (820 ppm) CO2 mole fraction ([CO2]). RL was estimated from combined gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements using the Kok method, the Kok-Phi method, and a revised Kok method (Kok-Cc method). We found that elevated growth [CO2] led to an 8.4% reduction in RL and a 16.2% reduction in RDk in both species, in parallel to decreased leaf N and chlorophyll contents at elevated growth [CO2]. We also looked at short-term CO2 effects during gas exchange experiments. Increased RL or RL/RDk at elevated measurement [CO2] were found using the Kok and Kok-Phi methods, but not with the Kok-Cc method. This discrepancy was attributed to the unaccounted changes in Cc in the former methods. We found that the Kok and Kok-Phi methods underestimate RL and overestimate the inhibition of respiration under low irradiance conditions of the Kok curve, and the inhibition of RL was only 6%, representing 26% of the apparent Kok effect. The amendment of organic fertilizer derived from livestock manure or biosolids is a significant driver of increasing antibiotic resistance in agricultural soils; however, it remains unclear whether increasing organic fertilizer application rates consistently enhances soil antibiotic resistance levels. Herein, we collected soils with long-term amendment with three types of organic fertilizers at four application rates (15, 30, 45, and 60 t/ha/y) and found that the higher the fertilization rate, the higher the antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) abundance. However, when the fertilization rate exceeded 45 t/ha/y, the ARG abundance ceased to significantly increase. Moreover, the soil ARG abundance was positively correlated with total nitrogen (TN) content and bacterial abundance, especially Firmicutes, and negatively affected by pH and bacterial diversity. Soil TN/bacterial abundance and pH/bacterial diversity reached maximum and minimum values at the 45 t/ha/y fertilization rate, respectively. Meanwhile, at this fertilization rate, Firmicutes enrichment peaked. Therefore, an organic fertilization rate of 45 t/ha/y appeared to represent the threshold for soil antibiotic resistance in this study. The underlying mechanism for this threshold was closely related to soil TN, pH, bacterial abundance, and diversity. Trade-offs in resource-use efficiency (including water-, nitrogen-, and light-use efficiency, i.e., WUE, NUE, and LUE) are an important acclimation strategy of plants to environmental stresses. C 4 photosynthesis, featured by a CO 2 concentrating mechanism, is believed to be more efficient in using resources compared to C 3 photosynthesis. However, response of photosynthetic resource-use efficiency trade-offs in C 4 plants to vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and N supply has rarely been studied. Here, we studied the photosynthetic acclimation of Cleistogenes squarrosa, a perennial C 4 grass, to controlled growth conditions with high or low VPD and N supply. High VPD increased WUE by 12% and decreased NUE by 16%, the ratio of net photosynthetic rate (A) to electron transport rate (J) (A/J) by 7% and the apparent quantum yield by 6%. High N supply tended to reduce NUE and increased maximum phosphoenol pyruvate carboxylation rate by 71% and slightly increased WUE. Stomatal conductance showed acclimation to VPD according to the Ball-Berry model, while a balanced cost of carboxylation and transpiration capacity was found across VPD and N treatments based on the least-cost model. Antibiotic fermentation residue is a key issue for the sustainable operation of pharmaceutical companies, and its improper disposal may cause antibiotic resistance transfer in the environment. However, little is known about the resource recycling strategy of this pharmaceutical waste. Herein, we used hydrothermal spray-dried (HT+SD) and multi-plate dryer (MD) methods to produce bio-organic fertilizers and applied them to an internal recycling model of a field trial. The concentrations of antibiotics (penicillin, cephalosporin, and erythromycin) in the bio-fertilizer, wastewater, and exhaust gas were in the range of 0.002-0.68 mg/kg, ≤ 0.35 ng/mL, and 0.03-0.89 ng/mL, respectively. The organic matter and total nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents were approximately 80% and 10%, respectively. The soil bacterial community was similar among the fertilizer treatments in the same crop cultivation. A total of 233 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and 43 mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were detected, including seven Rank I ARGs and five Rank II ARGs. Random forest analysis showed that gene acc(3)-Via and plasmid trb-C were biomarkers, for which the resistance and the transfer mechanisms were antibiotic inactivation and conjugation, respectively. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is involved in the carcinogenesis of gastric cancer (GC) upon infection of normal cell and induces a highly variable composition of the tumour microenvironment (TME). However, systematic bioinformatics analysis of key genes associated with EBV regulation of immune infiltration is still lacking. In the present study, the TCGA and GEO databases were recruited to analyse the association between EBV infection and the profile of immune infiltration in GC. The weighted gene co-expression analysis (WGCNA) was applied to shed light on the key gene modules associated with EBV-associated immune infiltration in GC. 204 GC tissues were used to analysed the expression of key hub genes by using the immunohistochemical method. Real-time PCR was used to evaluate the association between the expression of EBV latent/lytic genes and key immune infiltration genes. Our results suggested that EBV infection changed the TME of GC mainly regulates the TIICs. The top three hub genes of blue (GBP1, IRF1, and LAP3) and brown (BIN2, ITGAL, and LILRB1) modules as representative genes were associated with EBV infection and GC immune infiltration. Furthermore, EBV-encoded LMP1 expression is account for the overexpression of GBP1 and IRF1. Purpose: We systematically reviewed the effectiveness of hexaminolevulinic acid (HAL) after traditional light cystoscopy vs. only white light cystoscopy (WLC) on nonmuscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) clinical outcomes., Methods: Systematic literature searches of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane database and reference lists were performed. A total of 12 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of HAL fluorescent cystoscopy (FC) and WLC vs. white light cystoscopy alone for the diagnosis of initial or recurrent bladder cancer that reported bladder cancer recurrence, progression, recurrence-free survival (RFS), and other effects were selected for review., Results: Our results included 2,775 patients identified for analysis and showed that the HAL group had a lower recurrence rate than the white light cystoscopy group with a statistically significant difference (RR=0.77, 95% CI 0.69-0.85. P < 0.05), and this advantage still existed for patients receiving intravesical chemotherapy. There was also a statistically significant difference in favour of fluorescent cystoscopy in recurrence-free survival and progression rate (HR=0.79, 95% CI 0.67-0.92. P < 0.05, RR = 0.63, 95% CI 0.43-0.94. P < 0.05, respectively). The time to first recurrence was not significantly different from that in the WLC group (SMD=0.73, 95% CI, -0.39-1.85. P = 0.2). And the HAL group did not have a significantly reduced residual tumor rate (RR=0.59, 95% CI 0.23-1.51. P = 0.27)., Conclusions: Fluorescent cystoscopy was associated with a reduced risk of bladder cancer recurrence and reduced progression rate; it also has advantages for RFS. The long-tailed mole ( Scaptonyx fusicaudus ) belongs to a monotypic genus within the family Talpidae. It is a small semi-fossorial mammal mostly distributed in south-western China. In this study, we obtained the complete mitochondrial genome of S. fusicaudus . The genome is a total of 16,602 bp in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNA), 2 ribosomal RNA genes (rRNA) and 2 non-coding regions, with a base composition of 33.51% A, 28.73% T, 23.68% C and 14.08% G. The nucleotide sequence data of 13 protein-coding genes of S. fusicaudus and other 14 insectivora species were used to reconstruct a Bayesian phylogenetic tree. Carbon isotope composition (δ 13 C) has been widely used to estimate the intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) of plants in ecosystems around the world, providing an ultimate record of the functional response of plants to climate change. This approach relies on established relationships between leaf gas exchange and isotopic discrimination, which are reflected in different formulations of 13 C-based iWUE models. In the current literature, most studies have utilized the simple, linear equation of photosynthetic discrimination to estimate iWUE. However, recent studies demonstrated that using this linear model for quantitative studies of iWUE could be problematic. Despite these advances, there is a scarcity of review papers that have comprehensively reviewed the theoretical basis, assumptions, and uncertainty of 13 C-based iWUE models. Here, we 1) present the theoretical basis of 13 C-based iWUE models: the classical model (iWUE sim ), the comprehensive model (iWUE com ), and the model incorporating mesophyll conductance (iWUE mes ); 2) discuss the limitations of the widely used iWUE sim model; 3) and make suggestions on the application of the iWUE mes model. Purpose: This study aimed to construct a radiomics signature of epicardial adipose tissue for predicting postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH)., Methods: We reviewed the preoperative computed tomography pulmonary angiography images of CTEPH patients who underwent PEA at our institution between December 2016 and May 2022. Patients were divided into training/validation and testing cohorts by stratified random sampling in a ratio of 7:3. Radiomics features were selected by using intra- and inter-class correlation coefficient, redundancy analysis, and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator algorithm to construct the radiomics signature. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the discrimination, calibration, and clinical practicability of the radiomics signature. Two hundred-times stratified five-fold cross-validation was applied to assess the reliability and robustness of the radiomics signature., Results: A total of 93 patients with CTEPH were included in this study, including 23 patients with POAF and 70 patients without POAF. Five of the 1,218 radiomics features were finally selected to construct the radiomics signature. The radiomics signature showed good discrimination with an AUC of 0.804 (95%CI: 0.664-0.943) in the training/validation cohort and 0.728 (95% CI: 0.503-0.953) in the testing cohorts. The average AUC of 200 times stratified five-fold cross-validation was 0.804 (95%CI: 0.801-0.806) and 0.807 (95%CI: 0.798-0.816) in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The calibration curve showed good agreement between the predicted and actual observations. Based on the DCA, the radiomics signature was found to be clinically significant and useful., Conclusion: The radiomics signature achieved good discrimination, calibration, and clinical practicability. Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease common in the elderly and is characterized by joint pain, swelling, and restricted movement. In recent years, heparanase has been reported to play an important role in the development of osteoarthritic cartilage. PG545 is a heparan sulfate mimetic with heparanase inhibitory activity. In this study, the therapeutic effects and possible mechanisms of PG545 were investigated in a chondrocyte injury model induced by interleukin-1β (IL -1β)., Methods: Following treatment with PG545 or the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine (3-MA), chondrocyte viability was detected using Cell Counting Kit-8 and fluorescein diacetate/propidium iodide double staining. The apoptosis rate of chondrocytes was determined by flow cytometry. Expression of light chain 3 and P62 was monitored by immunofluorescence labeling. Western blot, lentivirus infection with red fluorescent protein and green fluorescent protein, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction were used to determine the expression levels of chondrocyte markers, apoptosis-related factors, autophagy proteins, and key proteins of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway. The expression and activity of stress-specific enzymes such as malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, and catalase (CAT) were investigated. Chondrocytes with ATG5 knockdown were used to investigate the relationship between the therapeutic effect of PG545 and autophagy. The therapeutic effect of PG545 was verified in vivo., Results: PG545 had a significant protective effect on chondrocytes by reducing oxidative stress, apoptosis, and degradation of chondrocytes and increasing chondrocyte proliferation. PG545 was effective in inducing autophagy in IL-1β-treated cells, while 3-MA attenuated the effect. The PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway may be involved in the promotion of autophagy and OA treatment by PG545., Conclusion: PG545 was able to restore impaired autophagy and autophagic flux via the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, thereby delaying the progression of OA, suggesting that PG545 may be a novel therapeutic approach for OA., (© 2023 S. Animal manure is an important raw material for Agaricus bisporus production; however, it is also a reservoir for antibiotic residues, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Little is known about the influence of the commercial cultivation of A. bisporus on the dynamics of ARGs and the underlying mechanisms that cause their variations. In this study, we investigated the fate of 285 ARGs, 10 mobile genetic elements, and seven major categories of antibiotic residues in substrate and mushroom samples at different production phases. The results showed that commercial substrate preparation, particularly the pasteurization phase, was highly efficient in removing ARGs from the substrate. We further found that mycelium proliferation of A. bisporus contributed significantly to the removal of ARGs from the substrate and casing soil. The bacterial community is the key driver of changes in ARGs during the commercial cultivation of A. bisporus, which explained 46.67% of the variation in ARGs. Our results indicate that, despite the addition of animal manure, the risk of ARG dissemination to fruiting bodies and the environment is low. Animal farms are known reservoirs for environmental antimicrobial resistance (AMR). However, knowledge of AMR burden in the air around animal farms remains disproportionately limited. In this study, we characterized the airborne AMR based on the quantitative information of 30 antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), four mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and four human pathogenic bacteria (HPBs) involving four animal species from 20 farms. By comparing these genes with those in animal feces, the distinguishing features of airborne AMR were revealed, which included high enrichment of ARGs and their potential mobility to host HPBs. We found that depending on the antimicrobial class, the mean concentration of airborne ARGs in the animal farms ranged from 10 2 to 10 4 copies/m 3 and was accompanied by a considerable intensity of MGEs and HPBs (approximately 10 3 copies/m 3 ). Although significant correlations were observed between the ARGs and bacterial communities of air and fecal samples, the abundance of target genes was generally high in fine inhalable particles (PM2.5), with an enrichment ratio of up to 10 2 in swine and cattle farms. The potential transferability of airborne ARGs was universally strengthened, embodied by a pronounced co-occurrence of ARGs-MGEs in air compared with that in feces. Exposure analysis showed that animal farmworkers may inhale approximately 10 4 copies of human pathogenic bacteria-associated genera per day potentially carrying highly transferable ARGs, including multidrug resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Moreover, PM2.5 inhalation posed higher human daily intake burdens of some ARGs than those associated with drinking water intake. Overall, our findings highlight the severity of animal-related airborne AMR and the subsequent inhalation exposure, thus improving our understanding of the airborne flow of AMR genes from animals to humans. The striped-back shrew group demonstrates remarkable variation in skull and body size, tail length, and brightness of the dorsal stripe; and karyotypic and DNA variation has been reported in recent years. In this study, we investigated the phylogenetic structure of the group, as well as speciation patterns and demographic history in Mountains of Southwestern China and adjacent mountains, including the southern Himalayas, Mts. Bashan, Wushan, and Qinling. We sequenced a total of 462 specimens from 126 localities in the known range of the group, which were sequenced and analyzed based on 6.2 kb of sequence data from two mitochondrial, six nuclear, and two Y chromosome markers. Phylogenetic analyses of the concatenated mtDNA data revealed 14 sympatric and independently evolving lineages within the striped-back shrew group, including Sorex bedfordiae, S. cylindricauda, S. excelsus, S. sinalis and several cryptic species. All concatenated data (ten genes) showed a consistent genetic structure compared to the mtDNA lineages for the group, whereas the nuclear and the Y chromosome data showed a discordant genetic structure compared to the mtDNA lineages for the striped-back shrew group. Species delimitation analyses and deep genetic distance clearly support the species status of the 14 evolving lineages. The divergence time estimation suggested that the striped-back shrew group began to diversify from the middle Pleistocene (2.34 Ma), then flourished at approximately 2.14 Ma, followed by a series of rapid diversifications through the Pleistocene. Background: Acute respiratory and circulatory collapse might occasionally happen after pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA). We aimed to investigate the utilization of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) after PEA and potential risk factors., Methods: Demographic characteristics, clinical and surgical data were collected for all patients who underwent PEA from December 2016 to June 2022. All factors were compared between patients in the ECMO group and those in the other group. The most characteristic risk factors were obtained by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression and support vector machine machine learning, and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) Curve analysis was performed to verify the diagnostic value of the obtained risk factors., Results: A total of 117 patients underwent PEA, and 8 (6.8%) of them received ECMO treatment intraoperatively or postoperatively. There were significant differences between the two groups in terms of cardiac function, pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), preoperative inflammation and cardiopulmonary bypass time. The PVR and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (N/L ratio) were the most characteristic risk factors with an area under the ROC curve of 0.847 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.7517-0.9420, p = .005) and 0.896 (95% CI = 0.803-0.989, p = .001), respectively. The ECMO group had higher PVR (1549.4 ± 600.7 vs. 952.9 ± 466.9 dyn.s.cm -5 , p = .004) and N/L ratio (6.3 ± 5.6 vs. 2.4 ± 1.7, p = .001)., Conclusions: PVR and N/L ratio can correctly predict who is likely to receive ECMO treatment after PEA. Trees growing on paved lands endure many environmental stresses in the urban environment. However, the morphological and physiological mechanisms underlying tree adaptation to pavement in the field are less known. In this study, we investigated 40 sites where Ginkgo biloba and Platanus orientalis grow on adjacent pairs of paved and vegetated plots in parks and roadsides in Beijing, China. Relative to the vegetated land, the mean increments in the diameter at breast height and height in the paved land were significantly decreased by 44.5% and 31.9% for G. biloba and 31.7% and 60.1% for P. orientalis , respectively. These decreases are related to both the decrease in assimilation products due to the reductions in leaf area, leaf total nitrogen content, and chlorophyll content and the increase in energy cost due to the synthesis of more soluble sugar and proline for mitigating stress. The increase in leaf soluble sugar content, proline content, and δ 13 C indicated that trees could adapt to the paved land through the regulation of osmotic balance and the enhancement of water-use efficiency. Piecewise structural equation models showed that trees growing on the paved land are stressed by compounding impacts of the leaf morphological and physiological changes. BACKGROUND We aimed to evaluate the association between postoperative nadir hematocrit (Hct) and severe acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass graft (OPCABG) surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data of patients who received OPCABG were extracted from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care IV (MIMIC-IV) database. A generalized additive model was applied to explore the relationship between nadir Hct and severe AKI. Patients were divided into 4 groups by quartiles of postoperative nadir Hct, with the lowest group (Hct <25%) as reference. We conducted multivariate logistic regression models to calculate adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% CI and evaluate trend among the 4 groups. RESULTS In total, 1783 OPCABG patients were included. A nonlinear association between nadir Hct and severe AKI was identified. After adjusting for potential confounders, nadir Hct was negatively associated with risk of severe AKI when Hct was less than 31%; there was no statistical significance between highest Hct group (Hct ≥31%) and control group (Hct <25%; P>0.05). Tests for trend were significant (P<0.05). Subgroup analyses showed each 1% increase in postoperative nadir Hct was associated with a 23% decrease in risk of severe AKI (OR, 0.77; P=0.002) in lower BMI group (<30 kg/m²). CONCLUSIONS The association between postoperative nadir Hct and severe AKI in patients after OPCABG was nonlinear. Lower nadir Hct may be associated with increased risk of severe AKI when Hct values are less than 31%. However, no statistical significance was found between the highest Hct group and control group.

Background: The present study is aimed at identifying the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and relevant biological processes and pathways associated with epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) from patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). We also explored potential biomarkers using two machine-learning algorithms and calculated the immune cell infiltration in EAT., Materials and Methods: Three datasets (GSE120774, GSE64554, and GSE24425) were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. The GSE120774 dataset was used to evaluate DEGs between EAT of CAD patients and the control group. Functional enrichment analyses were conducted to study associated biological functions and mechanisms using the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), Gene Ontology (GO), and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA). After this, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and support vector machine recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) were performed to identify the feature genes related to CAD. The expression level of the feature genes was validated in GSE64554 and GSE24425. Finally, we calculated the immune cell infiltration and evaluated the correlation between the feature genes and immune cells using CIBERSORT., Results: We identified a total of 130 upregulated and 107 downregulated genes in GSE120774. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that DEGs are associated with several pathways, including the calcium signaling pathway, complement and coagulation cascades, ferroptosis, fluid shear stress and atherosclerosis, lipid and atherosclerosis, and regulation of lipolysis in adipocytes. TCF21, CDH19, XG, and NNAT were identified as feature genes and validated in the GSE64554 and GSE24425 datasets. Immune cell infiltration analysis showed plasma cells are significantly more numerous in EAT than in the control group ( p = 0.001), whereas macrophage M0 ( p = 0.024) and resting mast cells ( p = 0.036) were significantly less numerous. The Hengduan Mountains (HDM) of China are a biodiversity hotspot whose temperate flora and fauna are among the world's richest. However, the origin and evolution of biodiversity in the HDM remain poorly understood, especially in mammals. Given that the HDM shows the highest richness of vole species in the world, we used whole-exome capture sequencing data from the currently most comprehensive sampling of HDM voles to investigate their evolutionary history and diversification patterns. We reconstructed a robust phylogeny and re-estimated divergence times of the HDM voles. We found that all HDM voles could be divided into a western lineage (Volemys, Proedromys, and Neodon) and an eastern lineage (Caryomys and Eothenomys), and the two lineages originated from two migration events from North Eurasia to the HDM approximately 9 Mya. Both vole lineages underwent a significant acceleration of net diversification from 8-5 Mya, which was temporally congruent with the orogeny of the HDM region. We also identified strong intertribal gene flow among the HDM voles and hypothesized that frequent gene flow might have facilitated the speciation burst of the HDM voles. The elegant water shrew, Nectogale elegans , is one of the small mammal species most adapted to a semi-aquatic lifestyle. The taxonomy of the genus Nectogale has received little attention due to difficulties in specimen collection. In this study, we sequenced one mitochondrial and eight nuclear genes to infer the phylogenetic relationship of Nectogale . Phylogenetic analyses revealed two large clades within Nectogale . One clade represented N. elegans , and the other was regarded as N. sikhimensis . The split between N. elegans and N. sikhimensis dated back to the early Pleistocene (2.15 million years ago [Ma]), which might be relevant to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) uplift. The morphological comparison showed several distinguishing characters within Nectogale : the shape of the mastoids, the first lower unicuspid (a1), and the second upper molar (M 2 ). Objective: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) refers to unusual permanent dilation of the abdominal aorta, and gradual AAA expansion can lead to fatal rupture. However, we lack clear understanding of the pathogenesis of this disease. The effect of perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) on vascular functional status has attracted increasing attention. Here, we try to identify the potential mechanisms linking AAA and PVAT. Methods: We downloaded dataset GSE119717, including 30 dilated AAA PVAT samples and 30 non-dilated aorta PVAT samples from AAA cases, from Gene Expression Omnibus to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs). We performed pathway enrichment analysis by Metascape, ClueGo and DAVID to annotate PVAT functional status according to the DEGs. A protein-protein interaction network, the support vector machine (SVM)-recursive feature elimination and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression model were constructed to identify feature genes. Immune infiltration analysis was explored by CIBERSORT. And the correlation between feature gene and immune cells was also calculated. Finally, we used the angiotensin II (Ang II)-ApoE-/- mouse model of AAA to verify the effect of feature gene expression by confirming protein expression using immunohistochemistry and western blot. Results: We identified 22 DEGs, including 21 upregulated genes and 1 downregulated gene. The DEGs were mainly enriched in neutrophil chemotaxis and IL-17 signaling pathway. FOS was identified as a good diagnostic feature gene (AUC = 0.964). Immune infiltration analysis showed a higher level of T cells follicular helper, activated NK cells, Monocytes, activated Mast cells in AAA group. And FOS was correlated with immune cells. Immunohistochemistry and western blot confirmed higher FOS expression in PVAT of the AAA mouse model compared to control group. Conclusion: The differentially expressed genes and pathways identified in this study provide further understanding of how PVAT affects AAA development. FOS was identified as the diagnostic gene. Airborne fungi can pose serious health concerns in humans; however, the area-specific abundance and composition of airborne fungal microbiota discharged from composting facilities remain unclear. In the present study, we collected air samples from composting, packaging, office, and downwind areas of four commercial composting facilities. The characteristics of airborne fungi, including pathogen/allergen-containing genera, and their corresponding human exposure in different areas of composting facilities were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing and ddPCR. High fungal concentrations and richness were detected in the air of the packaging area. In all four areas, Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Mucoromycota were observed to be the primary fungal phyla, with Cladosporium, Alternaria, and Aspergillus as the consistently dominant fungal genera. A large number of endemic airborne fungi were found in the composting and packaging areas, which also shared the most common airborne fungi as well as pathogen/allergen-containing genera. The packaging area contributed substantially to airborne fungi in the office and downwind areas. Area-specific human exposure to broad airborne fungal compositions was revealed, especially regarding the pathogen/allergen-containing genera. The plasmid-mediated horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among bacteria facilitates the evolution and dissemination of antibiotic resistance. Broad-host-range plasmids can be transferred to different bacterial hosts in soil, plant rhizospheres, and wastewater treatment plants. Although composting is an effective way to convert organic waste into fertilizer and reduce some ARGs, few studies have focused on its effects on the spread of ARG-carrying plasmids and their bacterial host communities during composting. In this study, a fluorescently labeled Pseudomonas putida ( P. putida ) harboring a broad-host-range plasmid RP4 carrying three ARGs was inoculated into a raw material microcosm and composted with different durations of the thermophilic phase. The fate of the donor and RP4 in composting was investigated. The prolonged thermophilic composting removed 95.1% of dsRed and 98.0% of gfp , and it inhibited the rebound of P. putida and RP4 during the maturation phase. The spread potential of RP4 decreased from 10 -4 to 10 -6 transconjugants per recipient after composting. In addition, we sorted and analyzed the composition of RP4 recipient bacteria using fluorescence-activated cell sorting combined with 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The recipient bacteria of RP4 belonged to eight phyla, and Firmicutes, accounting for 75.3%-90.1%, was the dominant phylum in the transconjugants. The diversity and richness of the RP4 recipient community were significantly reduced by prolonged thermophilic periods. Background: Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) used in intensive animal farming threaten human health worldwide; however, the common resistome, ARG mobility, and ARG host composition in different animal manures and mixed manure composts remain unclear. In the present study, metagenomic assembly and cross-sample mapping were used to comprehensively decipher the common resistome and its potential mobility and hosts in animal manure and composts., Results: In total, 201 ARGs were shared among different animal (layer, broiler, swine, beef cow, and dairy cow) manures and accounted for 86-99% of total relative abundance of ARGs. Except for multidrug, sulfonamide, and trimethoprim resistance genes, the relative abundance of most ARGs in composts was significantly lower than that in animal manure. Procrustes analysis indicated that antibiotic residues positively correlated with ARG composition in manure but not in composts. More than 75% ARG subtypes were shared between plasmids and chromosomes in our samples. Transposases could play a pivotal role in mediating the transfer of ARGs between different phyla in animal manure and composting. Cross-sample mapping to contigs carrying ARGs showed that the hosts of common resistome in manure had preference on animal species, and the dominant genus of ARG host shifted from Enterococcus in manure to Pseudomonas in composts. The broad host range and linking with diverse mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were two key factors for ARGs, such as sul1 and aadA, which could survive during composting. The multidrug resistance genes represented the dominant ARGs in pathogenic antibiotic-resistant bacteria in manure but could be effectively controlled by composting., Conclusions: Our experiments revealed the common resistome in animal manure, classified and relative quantified the ARG hosts, and assessed the mobility of ARGs. Composting can mitigate ARGs in animal manure by altering the bacterial hosts; however, persistent ARGs can escape from the removal because of diverse host range and MGEs. Bacteriophages (phages), the most abundant biological entities on Earth, have a significant effect on the composition and dynamics of microbial communities, biogeochemical cycles of global ecosystems, and bacterial evolution. A variety of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been identified in phage genomes in different soil samples. Phages can mediate the transfer of ARGs between bacteria via transduction. Recent studies have suggested that anthropogenic activities promote phage-mediated horizontal gene transfer events. Therefore, the role of phages in the dissemination of ARGs, which are a potential threat to human health, may be underestimated. However, the contribution of phages to the transfer of ARGs is still poorly understood. Considering the growing and wide concerns of antibiotic resistance, phages should be considered a research focus in the mobile resistome. This review aimed to provide an overview of phages as vehicles of ARGs in soil. Here, we summarized the current knowledge on the diversity and abundance of ARGs in soilborne phages and analyzed the contribution of phages to the horizontal transfer of ARGs. Finally, research deficiencies and future perspectives were discussed. Background: Passenger lymphocyte syndrome (PLS) is an immune-mediated hemolysis that occurs after ABO-mismatched kidney transplantation. PLS is caused by donor lymphocytes producing antibodies to recipient red blood cells, resulting in hemolysis. The incidence of PLS has been reported to be approximately 20% in patients with ABO-mismatched groups. Nevertheless, there is no comprehensive review of PLS following renal transplantation. In this review, we systematically summarized the data of patients with PLS after renal transplantation to help clinicians diagnose and treat more effectively., Methods: A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. All relevant data were collected, including age, sex, and clinical and immune parameters., Results: A total of 91 published cases were identified. The age ranged from 9 to 70 years old and 58.2% were male. Eighty-six cases were only kidney transplantations, one was liver-kidney transplantation, three were pancreas-kidney transplantations, and one was intestinal-kidney transplantation. Of these cases, 27 received kidneys from deceased donors, whereas 40 received kidneys from living donors. Most patients showed immune hemolysis dominated by anaemia, which was significantly improved after symptomatic support treatment, such as blood transfusion and erythropoietin injection., Conclusion: PLS is an immune-mediated disease that can occur in patients with ABO-mismatched renal transplantation, which commonly causes hemolysis, although death or deformities of the graft can also occur in patients with the disorder.
