The quick and accurate measurement and evaluation of the deterioration degree and consolidation effectiveness on the surface of masonry relics is valuable for disease investigation and restoration work. However, there is still a lack of quantitative indices for evaluating the deterioration degree and consolidation effectiveness of masonry relics in situ. Based on the micro-drilling resistance method, new quantitative evaluation indices for the deterioration degree and consolidation of masonry materials were proposed. Five types of masonry samples with different deterioration degrees were prepared by artificially accelerated deterioration tests involving sandstone and clay brick as research objects. Three types of consolidants were used to consolidate the deteriorated samples. Drilling resistance tests were conducted for deteriorated and consolidated samples. The variations in deterioration depth and average drilling resistance for samples with different numbers of deterioration cycles were analysed, while the differences in consolidation depth and average drilling resistance for samples with different consolidant types and dosages were compared. Finally, the deterioration degree index ( K ) and consolidation effectiveness index ( R c ), which are based on the average drilling resistance, are proposed. Potassium ion batteries (PIBs) are a viable alternative to lithium-ion batteries for energy storage. Red phosphorus (RP) has attracted a great deal of interest as an anode for PIBs owing to its cheapness, ideal electrode potential, and high theoretical specific capacity. However, the direct preparation of phosphorus-carbon composites usually results in exposure of the RP to the exterior of the carbon layer, which can lead to the deactivation of the active material and the production of "dead phosphorus". Here, the advantage of the π-π bond conjugated structure and high catalytic activity of metal phthalocyanine (MPc) is used to prepare MPc@RP/C composites as a highly stable anode for PIBs. It is shown that the introduction of MPc greatly improves the uneven distribution of the carbon layer on RP, and thus improves the initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of PIBs (the ICE of FePc@RP/C is 75.5% relative to 62.9% of RP/C). The addition of MPc promotes the growth of solid electrolyte interphase with high mechanical strength, improving the cycle stability of PIBs (the discharge-specific capacity of FePc@RP/C is 411.9 mAh g -1 after 100 cycles at 0.05 A g -1 ). Besides, density functional theory theoretical calculations show that MPc exhibits homogeneous adsorption energies for multiple potassiation products, thereby improving the electrochemical reactivity of RP. The use of organic molecules with high electrocatalytic activity provides a universal approach for designing superior high-capacity, large-volume expansion anodes for PIBs.

Mercury (Hg) is naturally released by volcanoes and geothermal systems, but the global flux from these natural sources is highly uncertain due to a lack of direct measurements and uncertainties with upscaling Hg/SO 2 mass ratios to estimate Hg fluxes. The 2021 and 2022 eruptions of Fagradalsfjall volcano, southwest Iceland, provided an opportunity to measure Hg concentrations and fluxes from a hotspot/rift system using modern analytical techniques. We measured gaseous Hg and SO 2 concentrations in the volcanic plume by near-source drone-based sampling and simultaneous downwind ground-based sampling. Mean Hg/SO 2 was an order of magnitude higher at the downwind locations relative to near-source data. This was attributed to the elevated local background Hg at ground level (4.0 ng m -3 ) likely due to emissions from outgassing lava fields. The background-corrected plume Hg/SO 2 mass ratio (5.6 × 10 -8 ) therefore appeared conservative from the near-source to several hundred meters distant, which has important implications for the upscaling of volcanic Hg fluxes based on SO 2 measurements. Using this ratio and the total SO 2 flux from both eruptions, we estimate the total mass of gaseous Hg released from the 2021 and 2022 Fagradalsfjall eruptions was 46 ± 33 kg, equivalent to a flux of 0.23 ± 0.17 kg d -1 . This is the lowest Hg flux estimate in the literature for active open-conduit volcanoes, which range from 0.6 to 12 kg d -1 for other hotspot/rift volcanoes, and 0.5-110 kg d -1 for arc volcanoes. Our results suggest that Icelandic volcanic systems are fed from an especially Hg-poor mantle. Mercury-bearing nano-mineral assemblages (Hg-NMAs) are chemically and mineralogically heterogeneous, micrometer-sized aggregates of nanoparticles (NPs) found in contaminated soils and sediments. Although these NMAs control sequestration and release of Hg that is a global contaminant, our understanding is limited with respect to the conditions of different types of Hg-NMAs, the diversity of its minerals, the size distribution of its NPs and whether mineral replacement and alteration reactions in these NMAs result in the release of Hg-bearing NPs. For this purpose, Hg-NMAs in four sediment samples from the Guanajuato Mining District (GMD) in Mexico, a region that was polluted by Hg and silver (Ag) due to historical mining involving Hg amalgamation, are characterized at the micro- and nanoscale. Microscale examinations with SEM show that the majority of Hg-NMAs occurs in mineral surface coatings (MSC) and fillings in fractures within quartz grains and are enriched in Hg and sulfur (S) relative to Ag, and in S and selenium (Se) relative to chloride (Cl). Examinations at the nanoscale show that Hg-NMAs contain (a) residuals of the patio process such as amalgam phases and elemental Ag; (b) associations of Hg- and Ag-sulfide NPs with pyrite and marcasite; (c) associations of Hg- and Ag-sulfide NPs with goethite and clay minerals along the rims of the MSC. The latter minerals replaced the Fe-Si-rich matrix at high-water rock ratios most likely due to an increase in porosity during flooding of the Pastita River. Consequently, the rims are depleted in Hg-Ag-sulfide NPs relative to the unaltered Fe-Si-rich matrices indicating that changes in the physiochemical conditions of soils and sediments in the GMD can result in the release of Hg-Ag-bearing NPs. In this context, this study discusses whether release and dissolution of Hg-Ag-bearing NPs contribute to the recently observed elevated gaseous elemental Hg concentrations in the soil, interstitial air and ambient air, and to the fate and effects of Hg in local aquatic environments.

The major input of mercury (Hg) to the Arctic is normally ascribed to long-range transport of anthropogenic Hg emissions. Recently, alarming concentrations of Hg in meltwater from the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) were reported with bedrock as the proposed source. Reported Hg concentrations were 100 to 1000 times higher than in known freshwater systems of Greenland, calling for independent validation of the extraordinary concentrations and conclusions. Here, we present measurements of Hg at 21 glacial outlets in West Greenland showing that extreme Hg concentrations cannot be reproduced. In contrast, we find that meltwater from below the GrIS is very low in Hg, has minor implications for the global Hg budget, and pose only a very limited risk for local communities and the natural environment of Greenland.

The fireworks industry has long struggled with the problem of safety. Scientific, reasonable, and operable evaluation models are prerequisites of reducing risk. Based on the data from over 100 fireworks production safety accidents in China from 2010 to 2022, two evaluation models were established from the perspective of safety risk definition. Firstly, a weight calculation derivative method, the frequency-based analytic network process (ANP), was proposed creatively. This method optimized the importance ranking index calculation process in the ANP by considering the causal frequency of risk factors in the historical accident samples, thus determining how much each indicator affects the likelihood of accidents. Secondly, utilizing the historical accident samples as the dataset, a back propagation neural network (BPNN) model was developed to extract the mathematical relationship between each risk factor and the severity of accident consequence. Finally, the frequency-based ANP and BPNN models were combined to determine the safety risk level of the fireworks production enterprises. Meanwhile, the safety evaluation research samples were used as the comparison set for empirical study with historical accident samples, involving 100 fireworks production enterprises in China evaluated from 2017 to 2020. The significance result of zero shows that there is a statistically significant difference between the likelihood evaluation results of the accident and non-accident companies. Additionally, the severity evaluation model exhibits an excellent result, revealing a classification accuracy of 98.21 %, a mean square error of 8.97 × 10 -4 , a percent bias of 1.24 %, and a correlation coefficient and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient both of 0.96. The frequency-based ANP and BPNN models integrate self-learning, self-adaptive, and fuzzy information processing, obtaining more accurate and objective evaluation results. All ecosystems are exposed to a variety of anthropogenic contaminants. The potential threat posed by these contaminants to organisms has prompted scores of toxicology studies. Contaminant concentrations in wildlife toxicology studies are inconsistently expressed in wet or dry mass units, or even on a lipid-normalized basis, but tissue composition is rarely reported, and the conversion between dry and wet mass units, notably, is often based on assumed empirical moisture contents in tissues. However, diverse factors (e.g., tissue, storage conditions) may affect tissue composition and render comparisons between studies difficult or potentially biased. Here, we used data on the concentration of mercury, a global pollutant, in tissues of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) to quantify the effects of diverse variables on moisture and lipid contents, and their consequences on contaminant concentration in different tissues, when converting between wet and dry mass units (lipid extracted or not). We found that moisture content differed largely between organs, enough to preclude the use of a single conversion factor, and decreased by 1% per year when stored at -80 °C. Although most fox tissues had low lipid concentrations, lipid content affected water content and their extraction affected the wet to dry mass conversion factor. Sea ice (including overlying snow) is a dynamic interface between the atmosphere and the ocean, influencing the mercury (Hg) cycling in polar oceans. However, a large-scale and process-based model for the Hg cycle in the sea ice environment is lacking, hampering our understanding of regional Hg budget and critical processes. Here, we develop a comprehensive model for the Hg cycle at the ocean-sea ice-atmosphere interface with constraints from observational polar cryospheric data. We find that seasonal patterns of average total Hg (THg) in snow are governed by snow thermodynamics and deposition, peaking in springtime (Arctic: 5.9 ng/L; Antarctic: 5.3 ng/L) and minimizing during ice formation (Arctic: 1.0 ng/L, Antarctic: 0.5 ng/L). Arctic and Antarctic sea ice exhibited THg concentration peaks in summer (0.25 ng/L) and spring (0.28 ng/L), respectively, governed by different snow Hg transmission pathways. Antarctic snow-ice formation facilitates Hg transfer to sea ice during spring, while in the Arctic, snow Hg is primarily moved through snowmelt. Overall, first-year sea ice acts as a buffer, receiving atmospheric Hg during ice growth and releasing it to the ocean in summer, influencing polar atmospheric and seawater Hg concentrations. Our model can assess climate change effects on polar Hg cycles and evaluate the Minamata Convention's effectiveness for Arctic populations.

A properly functioning local stormwater drainage system is essential for mitigating flood risks. This study evaluates the quality of roadside drainage channels in three underserved communities in Texas: the Sunnyside neighborhood in Houston (Harris County), a neighborhood in the City of Rockport (Aransas County), and the Hoehn colonia (Hidalgo County). These communities have a history of flooding, are highly socially vulnerable, and rely on roadside ditches as their principal stormwater drainage system for runoff control. Mobile lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) measurements were collected for 6.09 miles of roadside channels in these communities. The raw lidar measurements were processed to evaluate drainage conditions based on the channel's geometric properties, hydraulic capacity, and level of service. The assessment results are linked to a Geographic Information System (GIS) tool for enhanced visualization. Language models have contributed to breakthroughs in interdisciplinary research, such as protein design and molecular dynamics understanding. In this study, we reveal that beyond language, representations of other entities, such as human behaviors, that are mappable to learnable sequences can be learned by language models. One compelling example is the real-world delivery route optimization problem. We here propose a novel approach based on the language model to optimize delivery routes on the basis of drivers' historical experiences. Although a broad range of optimization-based approaches have been designed to optimize delivery routes, they do not capture the implicit knowledge of complex delivery operating environments. The model we propose integrates this knowledge in the route optimization process by learning from driving behaviors in experienced drivers. A real-world delivery route that preserves drivers' implicit behavioral patterns is first analogized to a sentence in natural language. Through unsupervised learning, we then learn the vector representations of words and infer the drivers' delivery chains on the basis of the tailored chain-reaction-based algorithm. We also provide insights into the fusion of language models and operations research methods. In our approach, language models are applied to learn drivers' delivery behaviors and infer new deliveries at the delivery zone level, while the classic traveling salesman problem (TSP) model is embedded into the hybrid framework for intra-zone optimization. Numerical experiments performed on real-world data from Amazon's delivery service demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms pure optimization, supporting the effectiveness, efficiency, and extensibility of our model. As a versatile approach, the proposed framework can easily be extended to various disciplines in which the data follow certain grammar rules. As a combination concept of a 2D material and a superlattice, two-dimensional superlattices (2DSs) have attracted increasing attention recently. The natural advantages of 2D materials in their properties, dimension, diversity and compatibility, and their gradually improved technologies for preparation and device fabrication serve as solid foundations for the development of 2DSs. Compared with the existing 2D materials and even their heterostructures, 2DSs relate to more materials and elaborate architectures, leading to novel systems with more degrees of freedom to modulate material properties at the nanoscale. Here, three typical types of 2DSs, including the component, strain-induced and moiré superlattices, are reviewed. The preparation methods, properties and state-of-the-art applications of each type are summarized. An outlook of the challenges and future developments is also presented. We hope that this work can provide a reference for the development of 2DS-related research.

A unique hybridized intumescent flame retardant named reduced-graphene-oxide-modified ammonium polyphosphate (RGO-APP) was successfully synthesized via the simple hydrothermal method and reduced process. Then, the obtained RGO-APP was applied in epoxy resin (EP) for flame retardancy reinforcement. The addition of RGO-APP results in a significant reduction in heat release and smoke production from the EP, which is attributed to EP/RGO-APP producing a more compact and intumescent char against the heat transfer and combustible decomposition, thus enhancing the fire safety of EP, as confirmed by char residue analysis. Especially, the EP containing 15 wt% RGO-APP acquires a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 35.8% and shows a 83.6% reduction in peak heat release rate and a 74.3% reduction in peak smoke production rate compared with those of pure EP. The tensile test exhibits that the presence of RGO-APP favors the enhancement in tensile strength and elastic modulus of EP due to the good compatibility between flame retardant and epoxy matrix, as supported by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses. This work provides a new strategy for the modification of APP, thus facilitating a promising application in polymeric materials.

The biodegradability of residues derived from in-situ burning, an oil spill response strategy which involves burning an oil slick on the sea surface, has not yet been fully studied. With a growing risk of oil spills, the fate of the persistent burn residue containing potentially toxic substances must be better understood. Microcosms were used to study the microbial community response and potential biodegradability of in-situ burn residues generated from Ultra Low Sulphur (ULS) marine diesel. Microcosm studies were conducted using residues originating from the burning of unweathered and weathered diesel, with the addition of a fertilizer and a dispersant. Burn residues were incubated for 6 weeks at 7 °C in natural seawater with continual agitation in the dark. Samples were subsequently sacrificed for chemistry as well as 16S rRNA gene amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing. Chemistry analyses revealed a reduction in hydrocarbon concentrations. Medium chain-length n-alkanes (nC 16 -nC 24 ) decreased by 8% in unweathered burn residue microcosms and up to 26% in weathered burn residue microcosms. A significant decrease in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations was observed only for naphthalene, fluorene and their alkylated homologs, in the microcosms amended with residue produced from burning weathered diesel. Decreases of 2-24%, were identified depending on the compound. Microcosms amended with burn residues had distinct microbial communities marked by an increase in relative abundance of putative hydrocarbon degraders as well as an increase of known hydrocarbon-degradation genes. These novel results suggest that if in-situ burning is performed on ULS marine diesel, some of the indigenous bacteria would respond to the newly available carbon source and some of the residual compounds would be biodegraded. Computer vision tasks, such as motion estimation, depth estimation, object detection, etc., are better suited to light field images with more structural information than traditional 2D monocular images. However, since costly data acquisition instruments are difficult to calibrate, it is always hard to obtain real-world scene light field images. The majority of the datasets for static light field images now available are modest in size and cannot be used in methods such as transformer to fully leverage local and global correlations. Additionally, studies on dynamic situations, such as object tracking and motion estimates based on 4D light field images, have been rare, and we anticipate a superior performance. In this paper, we firstly propose a new static light field dataset that contains up to 50 scenes and takes 8 to 10 perspectives for each scene, with the ground truth including disparities, depths, surface normals, segmentations, and object poses. This dataset is larger scaled compared to current mainstream datasets for depth estimation refinement, and we focus on indoor and some outdoor scenarios. Second, to generate additional optical flow ground truth that indicates 3D motion of objects in addition to the ground truth obtained in static scenes in order to calculate more precise pixel level motion estimation, we released a light field scene flow dataset with dense 3D motion ground truth of pixels, and each scene has 150 frames. Thirdly, by utilizing the DistgDisp and DistgASR, which decouple the angular and spatial domain of the light field, we perform disparity estimation and angular super-resolution to evaluate the performance of our light field dataset. The performance and potential of our dataset in disparity estimation and angular super-resolution have been demonstrated by experimental results.

Anthropogenic mercury (Hg) undergoes long-range transport to the Arctic where some of it is transformed into methylmercury (MeHg), potentially leading to high exposure in some Arctic inhabitants and wildlife. The environmental exposure of Hg is determined not just by the amount of Hg entering the Arctic, but also by biogeochemical and ecological processes occurring in the Arctic. These processes affect MeHg uptake in biota by regulating the bioavailability, methylation and demethylation, bioaccumulation and biomagnification of MeHg in Arctic ecosystems. Here, we present a new budget for pools and fluxes of MeHg in the Arctic and review the scientific advances made in the last decade on processes leading to environmental exposure to Hg. Methylation and demethylation are key processes controlling the pool of MeHg available for bioaccumulation. Methylation of Hg occurs in diverse Arctic environments including permafrost, sediments and the ocean water column, and is primarily a process carried out by microorganisms. While microorganisms carrying the hgcAB gene pair (responsible for Hg methylation) have been identified in Arctic soils and thawing permafrost, the formation pathway of MeHg in oxic marine waters remains less clear. Hotspots for methylation of Hg in terrestrial environments include thermokarst wetlands, ponds and lakes. The shallow sub-surface enrichment of MeHg in the Arctic Ocean, in comparison to other marine systems, is a possible explanation for high MeHg concentrations in some Arctic biota. Bioconcentration of aqueous MeHg in bacteria and algae is a critical step in the transfer of Hg to top predators, which may be dampened or enhanced by the presence of organic matter. Variable trophic position has an important influence on MeHg concentrations among populations of top predator species such as ringed seal and polar bears distributed across the circumpolar Arctic. Silver (Ag) production in Hispanic America between the 16th and 19th centuries is thought to be one of the largest sources of anthropogenic mercury (Hg) emissions in history. Recent reviews of the chemistry behind the patio process, which used Hg amalgamation to extract Ag from ore, reveal that a large amount of the Hg may not have been immediately released to the atmosphere; instead, it may have been captured in the form of calomel (Hg 2 Cl 2 , in which Hg exists as monovalent Hg I ) and remained in the local environment. Here we show that Hg used in the patio process centuries ago in the Guanajuato Mining District of Mexico continues to elevate present-day concentrations of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) throughout the region. In the ground-level air, GEM ranged from 8 to 454 ng m -3 , exceeding the Northern Hemispheric average (~1.4 ng m -3 ) by up to two orders of magnitude. Much higher concentrations, up to 44,700 ng m -3 , were found in the interstitial air of reprocessed mineral wastes, sediment, and soil. These highly elevated present-day GEM values are due, at least in part, to the disproportionation of legacy calomel, as supported by the presence of Hg I in the reprocessed wastes and by the GEM release pattern from calomel disproportionation. The atmosphere is the primary medium for long-distance transport and transformation of elemental mercury (Hg), a potent neurotoxin. The recent discovery of mass-independent fractionation (MIF) of even-mass Hg isotopes (even-MIF, measured as Δ 200 Hg and Δ 204 Hg) in the atmosphere is surprising and can potentially serve as a powerful tracer in understanding Hg biogeochemistry. Far-ultraviolet (UVC) light-induced gas-phase reactions have been suspected as a likely cause for even-MIF, yet the mechanism remains unknown. Here, we present the first experimental evidence of large-scale even-MIF caused by UVC-induced (wavelength: 254 nm) Hg oxidation in synthetic air at the pressure (46-88 kPa) and temperature (233-298 K) resembling those of the lower atmosphere. We observe negatively correlated Δ 200 Hg and Δ 204 Hg signatures with values as low as -50‰ and as high as 550‰, respectively, in the remaining atomic Hg pool. The magnitude of even-MIF signatures decreases with decreasing pressure with the Δ 200 Hg/Δ 204 Hg ratio being similar to that observed in global precipitation. This even-MIF can be explained by photodissociation of mercuric oxides that are photochemically formed in the UVC-irradiated Hg-O 2 system. We propose that similar processes occurring in the atmosphere, where mercuric oxide species serve as intermediates, are responsible for the observed even-MIF in the environment.

Background: Family doctor service (FDS) is a scheme oriented to improving the access and continuity of primary care in China. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) management is a core component of FDS. However, evidence on the quality of T2DM care is lacking and the potential association between FDS attributes and T2DM care is largely unknown. This study attempted to assess the process quality of T2DM care in general practice and explore the association between patient perceived FDS attributes and process quality of T2DM care., Methods: Total 400 patients were recruited from 5 community health service centers in two urban districts in Beijing. Questionnaire survey and extraction of data from electronic health record (EHR) were conducted to collect patient characteristics, patient perceived FDS attributes (accessibility, continuity and team-based care) and process quality indicators (monitoring and health counseling indicators). Chi-square test and a two-level generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) were used to explore the association between FDS attributes and process quality., Results: The utilization rate of all the 12 indicators in monitoring, 6 indicators in health counseling and all the 18 process indicators, was 12.8%, 23.8% and 6.0% respectively. Over half of the patients (56.8%) perceived all the 3 FDS attributes. There were statistically significant associations between accessibility of care and lipid (p = 0.008), electrocardiogram (p = 0.016), retinopathy (p = 0.037) and peripheral neuropathy (p = 0.006) monitoring and each of the 6 health counseling indicators (all the p values < 0.05). Regular follow up (p = 0.039), plasma blood glucose (p = 0.020), blood pressure (p = 0.026), body mass index (p = 0.044) and foot (p = 0.005) monitoring as well as each of the 6 health counseling indicators (all the p values < 0.05) were more likely to be received by patients when continuity of care was ensured. Patients who were managed by a GP team had higher utilization rate of glycosylated hemoglobin monitoring (p = 0.026) and each of the 6 health counseling indicators (all the p values < 0.05). When the patients perceived one more FDS attribute, the indicators they received significantly increased by 1.50 (coefficient = 1.50, p < 0.001). Patients between the age of 65 and 74 years received 1.15 more indicators than those under 65 (coefficient = 1.15, p = 0.003). Patients with more than ten years duration of T2DM received 0.74 more indicators (coefficient = 0.74, p = 0.028). Patients taking both insulin and oral medicine received 0.97 more indicators than those taking oral medication only (coefficient = 0.97, p = 0.027). Patients who were managed by GPs with on-job training experience received 1.19 more indicators (coefficient = 1.19, p = 0.040). Among the patients who had completed junior high school or below, having better self-report health status (≥ 60) received 2.40 less indicators (coefficient = -2.40, p = 0.004)., Conclusions: Improvement of key monitoring and health counseling indicators might be needed in T2DM care in general practice in Beijing, China. Public health and effective risk response cannot be promoted without a coordinated emergency process during a natural disaster. One primary problem with the emergency relief chain is the homogeneous layout of rescue organizations and reserves. There is a need for government-enterprise coordination to enhance the systemic resilience and demand orientation. Therefore, a bi-level multi-phase emergency plan model involving procurement, prepositioning and allocation is proposed. The tradeoff of efficiency, economy and fairness is offered through the multi-objective cellular genetic algorithm (MOCGA). The flood emergency in Hunan Province, China is used as a case study. The impact of multi-objective and coordination mechanisms on the relief chain is discussed. The results show that there is a significant boundary condition for the coordinated location strategy of emergency facilities and that further government coordination over the transition phase can generate optimal relief benefits. Demand orientation is addressed by the proposed model and MOCGA, with the realization of the process coordination in multiple reserves, optimal layout, and transition allocation. The emergency relief chain based on government-enterprise coordination that adapts to the evolution of disasters can provide positive actions for integrated precaution and health security.

The transformation of mercury (Hg) in the environment plays a vital role in the cycling of Hg and its risk to the ecosystem and human health. Of particular importance are Hg oxidation/reduction and methylation/demethylation processes driven or mediated by the dynamics of light, microorganisms, and organic carbon, among others. Advances in understanding those Hg transformation processes determine our capacity of projecting and mitigating Hg risk. Here, we provide a critical analysis of major knowledge gaps in our understanding of Hg transformation in nature, with perspectives on approaches moving forward. Our analysis focuses on Hg transformation processes in the environment, as well as emerging methodology in exploring these processes. Investigation of mercury (Hg) from atmospheric precipitation is important for evaluating its ecological impacts and developing mitigation strategies. Western China, which includes the Tibetan Plateau and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, is one of the most remote region in the world and is understudied in regards to Hg precipitation. Here we report seesaw-like patterns in spatial variations of precipitation Hg in Western China, based on Hg speciation measurements at nine stations over this remote region. The Hg fraction analyzed included total Hg (Hg T ), particulate-bound Hg (Hg P ) and methylmercury (MeHg). Spatially, Hg T concentrations and percentage of Hg P in precipitation were markedly greater in the westerlies domain than those in the monsoon domain, but the higher wet Hg T flux, MeHg concentration and percentage of MeHg in precipitation mainly occurred in the monsoon domain. Similar spatial patterns of wet Hg deposition were also obtained from GEOS-Chem modeling. We show that the disparity of anthropogenic and natural drivers between the two domains are mainly responsible for this seesaw-like spatial patterns of precipitation Hg in Western China. There has been a considerable number of reports on Hg concentrations in Arctic mammals since the last Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) effort to review biological effects of the exposure to mercury (Hg) in Arctic biota in 2010 and 2018. Here, we provide an update on the state of the knowledge of health risk associated with Hg concentrations in Arctic marine and terrestrial mammal species. Using available population-specific data post-2000, our ultimate goal is to provide an updated evidence-based estimate of the risk for adverse health effects from Hg exposure in Arctic mammal species at the individual and population level. Tissue residues of Hg in 13 species across the Arctic were classified into five risk categories (from No risk to Severe risk) based on critical tissue concentrations derived from experimental studies on harp seals and mink. Exposure to Hg lead to low or no risk for health effects in most populations of marine and terrestrial mammals, however, subpopulations of polar bears, pilot whales, narwhals, beluga and hooded seals are highly exposed in geographic hotspots raising concern for Hg-induced toxicological effects. About 6% of a total of 3500 individuals, across different marine mammal species, age groups and regions, are at high or severe risk of health effects from Hg exposure. The corresponding figure for the 12 terrestrial species, regions and age groups was as low as 0.3% of a total of 731 individuals analyzed for their Hg loads. Temporal analyses indicated that the proportion of polar bears at low or moderate risk has increased in East/West Greenland and Western Hudson Bay, respectively. Acrylamide-methacrylic acid copolymer named P (AM-co-MAA) was synthesized via aqueous solution polymerization, and then mixed with crosslinker, flame retardants and initiators to prepare multifunctional transparent flame-retarded hydrogels with transparency, fire resistance and anti-ageing property. The results show that the application of multifunctional transparent flame-retarded hydrogel imparts high level of transparency and excellent fire resistance to the fire-resistant glass, and the light transmittance and fire resistance of the flame-retarded hydrogel increases with the increasing mass ratio of AM to MAA in P(AM-co-MAA). When the mass ratio of AM to MAA is 4:1, the obtained P(AM-co-MAA) imparts the lowest backside temperature of 130 °C at 3600 s and highest light transmittance of 86.1% to the transparent flame-retarded hydrogel. TG and DSC analysis show that the addition of P(AM-co-MAA) increases the thermal stability of the transparent flame-retarded hydrogels due to the formation of numerous hydrogen bonds via the complexation between amide and carboxyl groups. Accelerated ageing test indicates that the transparent flame-retarded hydrogel containing P(AM-co-MAA) exerts durable fire resistance and transparency, and the ageing resistance of the transparent flame-retarded hydrogel depends on the mass ratio of AM to MAA in P(AM-co-MAA). Therefore, this study provides a promising strategy to prepare a novel multifunctional transparent flame-retarded hydrogel with excellent light transmittance, fire resistance and anti-ageing properties.

Public safety and health cannot be secured without the comprehensive recognition of characteristics and reliable emergency response schemes under the disaster chain. Distinct from emergency resource allocation that focuses primarily on a single disaster, dynamic response, periodic supply, and assisted decision-making are necessary. Therefore, we propose a multiobjective emergency resource allocation model considering uncertainty under the natural disaster chain. Resource allocation was creatively combined with path planning through the proposed multiobjective cellular genetic algorithm (MOCGA) and the improved A* algorithm with avoidance of unexpected road elements. Furthermore, timeliness, efficiency, and fairness in actual rescue were optimized by MOCGA. The visualization of emergency trips and intelligent avoidance of risk areas were achieved by the improved A* algorithm. The effects of logistics performance, coupling of disaster factors, and government regulation on emergency resource allocation were discussed based on different disaster chain scenarios. The results show that disruption in infrastructure support, cascading effect of disasters, and time urgency are additional environmental challenges. The proposed model and algorithm work in obtaining the optimal solution for potential regional coordination and resilient supply, with a 22.2% increase in the total supply rate. Cooperative allocation complemented by political regulation can be a positive action for successfully responding to disaster chains.

Diclofenac (DCF) is a drug compound that exists widely in water bodies, which may pose a threat to the ecological environment. In this study, spent bleaching earth (SBE) was pyrolyzed, modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and loaded with zero-valent iron (nZVI) to obtain CTAB-SBE@C-nZVI. The effects of CTAB concentration, Fe 0 loading, CTAB-SBE@C-nZVI dosage, and initial pH value on the removal efficiency of DCF were studied. The results showed that the DCF removal efficiency could reach a maximum of 87.0% with 2.0 g/L dosage of the optimal material, which was prepared under the conditions of 30 mmol/L CTAB concentration, 25% Fe 0 loading, and initial pH 5. It indicated that the strong adsorption of the material and the reduction effect of nZVI can achieve high-efficiency removal of DCF. Based on the detected reaction intermediate products, four possible degradation paths were inferred. The toxicity assessment of DCF and its intermediates manifested that the degradation of DCF by CTAB-SBE@C-nZVI was a process of gradual dechlorination and toxicity reduction. A unique mono-component intumescent flame retardant, named PPy-MAPP, of which melamine-coated ammonium polyphosphate (MAPP) was microencapsulated by polypyrrole (PPy), was synthesized and carefully characterized. The obtained PPy-MAPP was applied to epoxy resin (EP) for obtaining flame-retarded EP composites. The results show that PPy-MAPP imparts better flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties to EP compared to the same addition of MAPP. The EP composite with 15 wt% PPy-MAPP easily passes the UL94 V-0 rating and achieves an LOI value of 42.4%, accompanied by a 61.9% reduction in total heat release (THR) and a 73.9% reduction in total smoke production (TSP) when compared with pure EP. The char residue analysis shows that PPy-MAPP can promote a generation of more phosphorus-rich structures in the condensed phase that improve the integrity and intumescence of char against fire. The mechanical test indicates that PPy-MAPP has a less negative effect on the tensile strength and elastic modulus of epoxy resin due to the good compatibility between PPy-MAPP and the EP matrix, as supported by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. In this paper, these attractive features of PPy-MAPP provide a new strategy to prepare satisfactory flame retardant and super flame retarding EP composites.

Dramatic environmental shifts are occuring throughout the Arctic from climate change, with consequences for the cycling of mercury (Hg). This review summarizes the latest science on how climate change is influencing Hg transport and biogeochemical cycling in Arctic terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems. As environmental changes in the Arctic continue to accelerate, a clearer picture is emerging of the profound shifts in the climate and cryosphere, and their connections to Hg cycling. Modeling results suggest climate influences seasonal and interannual variability of atmospheric Hg deposition. The clearest evidence of current climate change effects is for Hg transport from terrestrial catchments, where widespread permafrost thaw, glacier melt and coastal erosion are increasing the export of Hg to downstream environments. Recent estimates suggest Arctic permafrost is a large global reservoir of Hg, which is vulnerable to degradation with climate warming, although the fate of permafrost soil Hg is unclear. The increasing development of thermokarst features, the formation and expansion of thaw lakes, and increased soil erosion in terrestrial landscapes are increasing river transport of particulate-bound Hg and altering conditions for aquatic Hg transformations. Greater organic matter transport may also be influencing the downstream transport and fate of Hg. More severe and frequent wildfires within the Arctic and across boreal regions may be contributing to the atmospheric pool of Hg. Climate change influences on Hg biogeochemical cycling remain poorly understood. Seasonal evasion and retention of inorganic Hg may be altered by reduced sea-ice cover and higher chloride content in snow. Experimental evidence indicates warmer temperatures enhance methylmercury production in ocean and lake sediments as well as in tundra soils. Background: Despite the dramatic growth of primary care in China, little evidence showed what general practitioner (GP) do and how GP provided medical service in Beijing., Objective: This study aimed to explore the work content of GPs in primary care in Beijing., Methods: A multi-method study was conducted in five community health service institutions using non-participant observation and critical incident technique interview. Eleven GPs was recruited by purpose sampling, with each GP recording details of 100 patient encounters. Health problems of patients and activities of GPs were observed in consultations. Then, critical incident technique interviews were conducted focusing on GPs' works out of clinics and challenge., Results: A total of 1, 100 patients encounters and 1,897 reasons for encounter (RFEs) were recorded from 11 GPs. There were 1897 RFEs (1.72 per encounter) and 2,762 health problems (2.51 per encounter) from 1,100 encounters during our observation. GPs' work related to consultation was focus on disease diagnoses and treatment. Physical examination and investigations were performed in only 15.5 and 17.1% consultations, respectively. Procedures for chronic disease management were infrequently provided to patients (0.4-26.6%). Time spent in each work process in consultations ranged from 0.68 ± 0.27 min for reservation to 4.00 ± 2.45 min for surgical treatment. In addition to clinical work, there were tasks about health files, contracted family doctor services, health education, teaching students, and scientific research., Conclusion: This study illustrated the complexity of GPs' work and heavy workload in Beijing, China. Polypyrrole-decorated tungsten tailing particles (PPY-TTF) were prepared via the in situ polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of tungsten tailing particles (TTF), and then carefully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) analyses. The effect of PPY-TTF on the flame retardancy, smoke suppression property and ageing resistance of intumescent fire-resistant coatings was investigated by a fire protection test, smoke density test and cone calorimeter test. The results show that PPY-TTF exerts excellent cooperative effect on enhancing the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of the intumescent fire-retardant coatings, which is ascribed to the formation of more cross-linking structures in the condense phase that enhance the compactness and thermal stability of intumescent char. The cooperative effect of PPY-TTF in the coatings depends on its content, and the coating containing 3 wt% PPY-TTF exhibits the best cooperative effect among the samples, showing a 10.7% reduction in mass loss and 35.4% reduction in flame-spread rating compared to that with 3% TTF. The accelerated ageing test shows that the presence of PPY-TTF greatly slows down the blistering and powdering phenomenon of the coatings, thus endowing the coating with the super durability of fire resistance and smoke suppression property. This work provides a new strategy for the resource utilization of tungsten tailing in the field of flame-retardant materials.

Background: Physical examination is a core component of consultation. Little is known about the status quo of physical examinations performed by general practitioners in community health service institutions in China. The aim of this study was to investigate general practitioners' performance of physical examinations in consultations., Methods: An observational study was conducted in 5 community health service institutions in Beijing between November 2019 and January 2020. Eleven general practitioners were observed for one workday. Information of consecutive consultations was recorded including patient characteristics, reasons for encounter, physical examinations performed by general practitioners, length of consultation time and time spent on specific activities in consultations., Results: A total of 682 consultations of 11 general practitioners were recorded. Physical examinations were performed in 126 consultations (15.8%). Physical examination was more likely to be performed in patients visiting with symptoms (P < 0.001). Majority of the 126 physical examinations were distributed in "Head, face, and neck examination" (n = 54, 42.9%) and "Cardiovascular examination" (n = 55, 43.7%). No physical examination was performed on skin, male genitalia, female breasts and genitalia, and neurological systems. Total 2823 min of activities were observed and recorded. General practitioners only spent 3.1% of the recorded time on physical examination, which was less than the time spent on taking history (18.2%), test (4.9%), diagnosis (22.7%), therapy (38.4%), and health education (8.6%). The average time spent on physical examinations was 0.8±0.4 min per consultation., Conclusion: Physical examination was insufficiently performed by general practitioners in community health service institutions in Beijing. Three types of shell bio-fillers, including eggshell (CES), conch shell (CHS) and clamshell (CMS), were prepared by cleaning, ultrasonication and pulverizing processes of biowastes, and then applied to intumescent fire-retardant coatings. The effects of shell bio-fillers with different polymorphs on the fire resistance and char-forming of intumescent fire-retardant coatings were investigated by cone calorimeter test, fire protection tests, smoke density test, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and the fire resistance and char-forming mechanism of bio-fillers in intumescent fire-retardant coatings were proposed. The results show that three kinds of bio-fillers exert an excellent synergistic effect on enhancing the fire resistance and char-forming properties of the intumescent fire-retardant coatings, while clamshell has the best synergistic efficiency among the bio-fillers. Especially, IFRC-CMS coating containing 3 wt% clamshell shows the best fire protection performance and lowest smoke production and heat release, which offers an equilibrium backside temperature of 134.6 °C at 900 s, a flame-spread rating of 14.4, and a smoke density rating value of 22.8%. The synergistic efficiency of bio-fillers in the intumescent coatings depends on the polymorphs of CaCO 3 in bio-fillers, and aragonite CaCO 3 shows a higher synergistic efficiency compared to calcite CaCO 3 and the mixture of aragonite and calcite CaCO 3 . The CMS composed of aragonite shows the best synergistic effect, CHS composed of aragonite and calcite comes second, and CES composed of calcite has the weakest synergistic effect.

The availability of viral entry factors is a prerequisite for the cross-species transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Large-scale single-cell screening of animal cells could reveal the expression patterns of viral entry genes in different hosts. However, such exploration for SARS-CoV-2 remains limited. Here, we perform single-nucleus RNA sequencing for 11 non-model species, including pets (cat, dog, hamster, and lizard), livestock (goat and rabbit), poultry (duck and pigeon), and wildlife (pangolin, tiger, and deer), and investigated the co-expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2. Furthermore, cross-species analysis of the lung cell atlas of the studied mammals, reptiles, and birds reveals core developmental programs, critical connectomes, and conserved regulatory circuits among these evolutionarily distant species. Overall, our work provides a compendium of gene expression profiles for non-model animals, which could be employed to identify potential SARS-CoV-2 target cells and putative zoonotic reservoirs., (© 2021. Objective: The prevalence of gout is increasing but studies of its clinical features in large samples are lacking. This study aimed to clarify changes in the clinical manifestations of gout in China over the last decade and investigate the clinical features and risk factors of early-onset gout., Methods: Clinical manifestations were compared between 9754 gout patients who first presented at our clinic with gout in 2008-2012 (earlier group) or 2013-2018 (later group). Gout onset≤30 years old was defined as early-onset and>30 years as late-onset. Clinical features and risk factors were compared between the groups., Results: The gout-onset age was 4.14 years younger and the percentage of early-onset gout (3827 patients) was higher in the later 2013-2018 group (5979 patients). The disease duration was significantly shorter (5.72±0.09 vs. 6.01±0.11 years P < 0,05) and the ratio of patients with tophi was correspondingly lower in the later group (22.0% vs. 20.0%, P < 0,05). More patients were obese (32.6% vs. 37.7%, P<0.001) and serum urate levels (465.0±1.9μmol/L vs. 485.5±1.5μmol/L) were significantly higher in the later group. As the age of gout-onset became younger, we did the multivariate logistic regression and identified a positive family history, male sex, obesity, elevated serum urate, and sugar-sweetened soft drinks as independent predictors of early-onset gout., Conclusion: The manifestations of gout in China have changed over the last decade, associated with a trend towards younger onset., (Copyright © 2020 Société française de rhumatologie. Poly(acrylamide-acrylic acid) (P(AM-co-AA)) was synthesized via the copolymerization of acrylamide and acrylic acid and well characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Afterward, the obtained P(AM-co-AA) was blended with flame retardants to prepare transparent flame-retardant hydrogel applied in the fireproof glass. The influence of poly(acrylamide-acrylic acid) on fire resistance and anti-aging properties of the transparent flame-retardant hydrogels were studied by assorted analysis methods. The optical transparency analysis shows that the light transmittance of the transparent flame-retardant hydrogel gradually decreases with the decreasing mass ratio of acrylamide to acrylic acid in P(AM-co-AA). Heat insulation testing shows that the heat insulation performance of fireproof glass applying the transparent flame-retardant hydrogel firstly decreases and then increases with decreasing mass ratio of acrylamide to acrylic acid in P(AM-co-AA). When the mass ratio of acrylamide to acrylic acid is 1:2, the obtained P(AM-co-AA) endows the resulting flame-retardant hydrogel applied in fireproof glass with the lowest light transmittance of 81.3% and lowest backside temperature of 131.4 °C at 60 min among the samples, which is attributed to the formation of a more dense and expanded char to prevent the heat transfer during combustion, as supported by the digital photos of char residues. The results of TG analysis indicate that P(AM-co-AA) imparts high thermal stability to the resulting hydrogels due to the hydrogen bonds between carboxyl and amide groups. The accelerated aging test shows that the transparent flame-retardant hydrogel containing P(AM-co-AA) is less affected by aging conditions. Especially, when the mass ratio of acrylamide to acrylic acid in P(AM-co-AA) is 4:1, the resulting transparent flame-retardant hydrogel shows a light transmittance of 82.9% and backside temperature of 173.1 °C at 60 min after 7 aging cycles, exhibiting the best comprehensive properties among the samples.

A novel diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) modified ammonium polyphosphate (APP) flame retardant, DDP, was successfully synthesized via ion-exchange reaction. DDP was introduced into epoxy resins (EPs) to reduce flammability. A comparable level of DDP exerts better flame-retardant and smoke suppression efficiencies in EP than APP. An EP blend containing 15 wt% DDP displays a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 37.1% and a UL 94 V-0 rating, and further exhibits a 32.3% reduction in total heat release and a 48.0% reduction in total smoke production compared with pure EP. The presence of DDP greatly facilitates char formation during combustion, and the char mass from thermal decomposition of an EP blend is 37.8% smaller than that of an EP blend containing 15 wt% DDP at 800 °C. The incorporation of DDP into EP blends has a smaller impact on the glass transition temperature and tensile strength than those of a comparable level of APP. This reflects the better compatibility of DDP with the EP matrix compared with that for APP.

Background: The "5 + 3" residency training is the main stream general practitioner training program in China. However, a competency model is absent for evaluating the clinical competence attained by general practitioners after training. This study was conducted to develop a consensus set of competencies for general practitioners after standardized residency training in China., Methods: A modified Delphi process was deployed to develop the competency model, including two stages: (1) generation of an initial set of competencies derived from literature review, behavioral observation of GP-patient consultations, and critical incidents interview of GPs; (2) a 2-round, web-based Delphi survey of experts in general practice, selected using purposive sampling, to prioritize and gain consensus on the essential competencies of GPs., Results: From literature review, behavioral observation, and critical incidents interview, 46 competencies in 7 domains were identified. After two rounds of Delphi survey of 28 participants (the mean age was 47.9 [9.3] years and 64.3% were women) representing a range of health professionals (GPs, managers, and researchers), a consensus was reached on 50 competencies categorized into 7 domains., Conclusion: A consensus-based competency model for general practitioners in China has been identified which may be used to evaluate the general practitioners' clinical competence after standardized training., (© 2021. Conch shell bio-filler (CSBF) was prepared by washing, ultrasonicating, and pulverizing of conch shells and then was applied in waterborne intumescent fire-retardant coatings. The influence of CSBF on fire resistance and anti-ageing properties of intumescent fire-retardant coatings were studied by using different analytical methods. The fire protection and smoke density tests showed that when the mass fraction of CSBF was 3%, the resulting FRC3 coating had the optimum synergistic flame-retardant and smoke-suppression effects concomitant with a flame-spread rating of 10.7, equilibrium backside temperature of 152.4 °C at 900 s, and smoke-density rating value of 10.4%, which were attributed to the establishment of a more dense and stable intumescent char layer against heat and mass transfer. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the presence of CSBF increased the thermal stability and char-forming performance of the coatings, and the char residue of FRC3 rose to 34.6% at 800 °C from 28.6% of FRC0 without CSBF. The accelerated ageing test suggested that the incorporation of CSBF reduced the migration and decomposition of the flame retardants and the yellowing, blistering, and powdering phenomenon, thus improving the structural stability of the coating, resulting in better durability of flame retardancy and smoke-suppression performance.

This study describes the validation of a diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT) technique for determining lanthanide rare earth elements (REEs) and in situ measurements of REEs in sediment pore waters. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that Chelex-100 binding layers had uptake efficiencies ranging from 78.0% to 92.3% for all REEs. An eluent of 1 mol L -1 HNO 3 was optimal with elution efficiencies >80% for all REEs. Mass versus time experiments confirmed that DGT uptake was linear for all REEs at pH 8.1, 6.6 and 3.9 over a period of 3-4 days. Diffusion coefficients (D) for all REEs were derived from these experiments using the slopes of the linear regressions. D values varied with pH but were generally similar to values reported previously. The Chelex-100 DGT technique from this study is highly sensitive for the measurement of REE concentrations with detection limits ranging from 1.8 to 45 ng L -1 based on 72 h deployments allowing measurements of natural trace REE levels. Chelex-100 DGT devices were deployed in estuarine and marine sediments over a period of 72 h and most REE porewater concentrations (50-10,410 ng L -1 ) were successfully measured. Individual depth profiles of REEs showed a complex response, with many peaks and troughs suggesting a high degree of sediment heterogeneity. Depth-averaged REE concentrations showed a typical zig-zag distribution, although patterns varied between sediment types, after the REEs were normalised using the Queensland Mud Composite shale reference. The brain of the domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) has drawn considerable attention due to its high similarities to that of humans. However, the cellular compositions of the pig brain (PB) remain elusive. Here we investigated the single-nucleus transcriptomic profiles of five regions of the PB (frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, and hypothalamus) and identified 21 cell subpopulations. The cross-species comparison of mouse and pig hypothalamus revealed the shared and specific gene expression patterns at the single-cell resolution. Furthermore, we identified cell types and molecular pathways closely associated with neurological disorders, bridging the gap between gene mutations and pathogenesis. The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global health emergency. Various omics results have been reported for COVID-19, but the molecular hallmarks of COVID-19, especially in those patients without comorbidities, have not been fully investigated. Here we collect blood samples from 231 COVID-19 patients, prefiltered to exclude those with selected comorbidities, yet with symptoms ranging from asymptomatic to critically ill. Using integrative analysis of genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic and lipidomic profiles, we report a trans-omics landscape for COVID-19. Our analyses find neutrophils heterogeneity between asymptomatic and critically ill patients. Meanwhile, neutrophils over-activation, arginine depletion and tryptophan metabolites accumulation correlate with T cell dysfunction in critical patients. Our multi-omics data and characterization of peripheral blood from COVID-19 patients may thus help provide clues regarding pathophysiology of and potential therapeutic strategies for COVID-19., (© 2021. Ocean sediments are the largest sink for mercury (Hg) sequestration and hence an important part of the global Hg cycle 1 . Yet accepted global average Hg flux data for deep-ocean sediments (> 200 m depth) are not based on measurements on sediments but are inferred from sinking particulates 2 . Mercury fluxes have never been reported from the deepest zone, the hadal (> 6 km depth). Here we report the first measurements of Hg fluxes from two hadal trenches (Atacama and Kermadec) and adjacent abyssal areas (2-6 km). Mercury concentrations of up to 400 ng g -1 were the highest recorded in marine sediments remote from anthropogenic or hydrothermal sources. The two trench systems differed significantly in Hg concentrations and fluxes, but hadal and abyssal areas within each system did not. The relatively low recent mean flux at Kermadec was 6-15 times higher than the inferred deep-ocean average 1,3 , while the median flux across all cores was 22-56 times higher. Thus, some hadal and abyssal sediments are Hg accumulation hot-spots. The hadal zone comprises only ~ 1% of the deep-ocean area, yet a preliminary estimate based on sediment Hg and particulate organic carbon (POC) fluxes suggests total hadal Hg accumulation may be 12-30% of the estimate for the entire deep-ocean. The few abyssal data show equally high Hg fluxes near trench systems. These results highlight a need for further research into deep-ocean Hg fluxes to better constrain global Hg models.

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that poses health risks to the global population. Anthropogenic mercury emissions to the atmosphere are projected to decrease in the future due to enhanced policy efforts such as the Minamata Convention, a legally-binding international treaty entered into force in 2017. Here, we report the development of a comprehensive climate-atmosphere-land-ocean-ecosystem and exposure-risk model framework for mercury and its application to project the health effects of future atmospheric emissions. Our results show that the accumulated health effects associated with mercury exposure during 2010-2050 are $19 (95% confidence interval: 4.7-54) trillion (2020 USD) realized to 2050 (3% discount rate) for the current policy scenario. Our results suggest a substantial increase in global human health cost if emission reduction actions are delayed. This comprehensive modeling approach provides a much-needed tool to help parties to evaluate the effectiveness of Hg emission controls as required by the Minamata Convention.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease, leading to the impairment of movement execution. PD pathogenesis has been largely investigated, either limited to bulk transcriptomic levels or at certain cell types, which failed to capture the cellular heterogeneity and intrinsic interplays among distinct cell types. Here, we report the application of single-nucleus RNA-seq on midbrain, striatum, and cerebellum of the α-syn-A53T mouse, a well-established PD mouse model, and matched controls, generating the first single cell transcriptomic atlas for the PD model mouse brain composed of 46,174 individual cells. Additionally, we comprehensively depicte the dysfunctions in PD pathology, covering the elevation of NF-κB activity, the alteration of ion channel components, the perturbation of protein homeostasis network, and the dysregulation of glutamatergic signaling. Notably, we identify a variety of cell types closely associated with PD risk genes. Volcanism is a potentially important natural source of mercury (Hg) to the environment. However, its impact on the global Hg cycle remains poorly understood despite advances over the last five decades. This represents a major uncertainty in our understanding of the relative contributions of natural and anthropogenic Hg sources to the global atmosphere. This uncertainty, in turn, impacts evaluation of the effectiveness of policies to mitigate the impact of anthropogenic Hg on the environment. Here we critically review recent progress in volcanic Hg emission research, including advances in sampling methods and understanding of the post-emission behavior of Hg in the atmosphere. Our statistical analysis of the limited available data shows that the plumes of non-arc volcanoes exhibit significantly higher Hg concentrations than arc volcanoes, yet the latter emit 3-fold higher Hg fluxes on average. Arc volcanism also dominates volcanic gas emissions globally, indicating that arc volcanoes should be a priority for future Hg emission research. We explore several methodological challenges that continue to hinder progress in quantifying global volcanic Hg emissions, and discuss the importance of longer time-frame data collection to capture temporal variations in emissions. Recommendations are proposed for working toward a more accurate assessment of the global volcanic Hg flux. Olfaction, the sense of smell, is a fundamental trait crucial to many species. The olfactory bulb (OB) plays pivotal roles in processing and transmitting odor information from the environment to the brain. The cellular heterogeneity of the mouse OB has been studied using single-cell RNA sequencing. However, the epigenetic landscape of the mOB remains mostly unexplored. Herein, we apply single-cell assay for transposase-accessible chromatin sequencing to profile the genome-wide chromatin accessibility of 9,549 single cells from the mOB. Based on single-cell epigenetic signatures, mOB cells are classified into 21 clusters corresponding to 11 cell types. We identify distinct sets of putative regulatory elements specific to each cell cluster from which putative target genes and enriched potential functions are inferred. In addition, the transcription factor motifs enriched in each cell cluster are determined to indicate the developmental fate of each cell lineage. Our study provides a valuable epigenetic data set for the mOB at single-cell resolution, and the results can enhance our understanding of regulatory circuits and the therapeutic capacity of the OB at the single-cell level., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. Mercury (Hg), a global contaminant, is emitted mainly in its elemental form Hg 0 to the atmosphere where it is oxidized to reactive Hg II compounds, which efficiently deposit to surface ecosystems. Therefore, the chemical cycling between the elemental and oxidized Hg forms in the atmosphere determines the scale and geographical pattern of global Hg deposition. Recent advances in the photochemistry of gas-phase oxidized Hg I and Hg II species postulate their photodissociation back to Hg 0 as a crucial step in the atmospheric Hg redox cycle. However, the significance of these photodissociation mechanisms on atmospheric Hg chemistry, lifetime, and surface deposition remains uncertain. Here we implement a comprehensive and quantitative mechanism of the photochemical and thermal atmospheric reactions between Hg 0 , Hg I , and Hg II species in a global model and evaluate the results against atmospheric Hg observations. We find that the photochemistry of Hg I and Hg II leads to insufficient Hg oxidation globally. The combined efficient photoreduction of Hg I and Hg II to Hg 0 competes with thermal oxidation of Hg 0 , resulting in a large model overestimation of 99% of measured Hg 0 and underestimation of 51% of oxidized Hg and ∼66% of Hg II wet deposition. This in turn leads to a significant increase in the calculated global atmospheric Hg lifetime of 20 mo, which is unrealistically longer than the 3-6-mo range based on observed atmospheric Hg variability. These results show that the Hg I and Hg II photoreduction processes largely offset the efficiency of bromine-initiated Hg 0 oxidation and reveal missing Hg oxidation processes in the troposphere., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interest., (Copyright © 2020 the Author(s). Background: Most schizophrenia patients are supported by main informal caregivers at home in China. This study aims to investigate the further needs of social supports for main informal caregivers of schizophrenia patients and to analyze influencing factors on the awareness and utilization of social supports in Beijing. The results of this study could potentially act as reference for health professionals to implement appropriate and effective support programs., Methods: A mixed-methods approach was used in this study. Awareness, utilization and influencing factors of social supports for main informal caregivers were investigated using questionnaires in 6 urban districts in Beijing. Meanwhile, individual in-depth interviews with 10 main informal caregivers from the urban districts of Beijing were conducted to identify the caregivers' perspective on social supports and their further needs., Results: Quantitative results showed that although the government provided multi-channel resources for schizophrenia patients and their families, awareness and utilization of the resources such as rehabilitation and relevant subsidies were less than 10.0 and 5.0% respectively. Most caregivers in in-depth interviews expressed that they had negative experiences with respect to obtaining social supports, and they emphasized that more support would be needed in terms of financial support, respect, and rehabilitation institutions., Conclusions: The awareness and utilization of social supports are low for main informal caregivers of schizophrenia patients. More services and improved public attitudes are needed for schizophrenia patients and their caregivers.

Background: The service capacity of primary care has improved in China. General practice also takes growing responsibility in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, but there are concerns about the paucity of evidence of the quality of care delivered. And there is an absence of systematic quality indicators of type 2 diabetes mellitus in general practice in China. This study aimed to develop a set of type 2 diabetes mellitus quality indicators to facilitate quality measurement in general practice in China., Methods: Preliminary quality indicators were generated and refined by literature review and an expert consultation meeting. Two rounds of email-based Delphi survey and a consensus meeting were carried out to identify quality indicators. Delphi questionnaires with 43 indicators were sent to 30 participants in the first round. There were 16 general practitioners and 10 community health service center leaders from primary care, 3 endocrinologists and a primary care researcher in the first round. And 27 out of the 30 participants participated in the second round. The consensus meeting was held among 9 participants to refine the indicators and a last round of rating was carried out in the meeting. The indicators were rated in terms of importance and feasibility. The agreement criteria were defined as median ≥ 7.0 and ≥ 85.0% of ratings in the 7-9 tertile for importance; median ≥ 7.0 and ≥ 65.0, 70.0, 75.0% of ratings in the 7-9 tertile for feasibility respectively in the three rounds of rating., Results: After 2 rounds of Delphi survey and the consensus meeting, total 38 indicators achieved consensus for inclusion in the final set of indicators. The final set of indicators were grouped into 7 domains: access (5 indicators), monitoring (12 indicators), health counseling (7 indicators), records (2 indicators), health status (7 indicators), patient satisfaction (2 indicators) and self-management (3 indicators)., Conclusions: A set of 38 potential quality indicators of type 2 diabetes mellitus in general practice were identified by an iterative Delphi process in Beijing, China. Preliminary approach for measurement and data collection were described. However, the indicators still need to be validated by testing in a further study.

Mercury (Hg) deposition through litterfall has been regarded as the main input of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) into forest ecosystems. We hypothesize that earlier studies largely underestimated this sink because the contribution of Hg 0 uptake by moss and the downward transport to wood and throughfall is overlooked. To test the hypothesis, we investigated the Hg fluxes contributed via litterfall and throughfall, Hg pool sizes in moss covers and woody biomass as well as their isotopic signatures in a glacier-to-forest succession ecosystem of the Southeast Tibetan Plateau. Results show that Hg 0 depositional uptake and pool sizes stored in moss and woody biomass increase rapidly with the time after glacier retreat. Using the flux data as input to a Hg isotopic mixing model, Hg deposition through litterfall accounts for 27-85% of the total accumulation rate of Hg 0 in organic soils of glacial retreat over 20-90 years, revealing the presence of additional sources of Hg 0 input. Atmospheric Hg 0 accounts for 76 ± 24% in ground moss, 86 ± 15% in tree moss, 62-92% in above ground woody biomass (branch-bark-stem), and 44-83% in roots. The downward decreasing gradient of atmospheric Hg 0 fractions from the above ground woody biomass to roots suggests a foliage-to-root Hg transport in vegetation after uptake. Additionally, 34-82% of atmospheric Hg 0 in throughfall further amplifies the accumulation of Hg 0 from atmospheric sources. We conclude that woody biomass, moss, and throughfall represent important Hg 0 sinks in forest ecosystems. These previously unaccounted for sink terms significantly increase the previously estimated atmospheric Hg 0 sink via litterfall.
