Antibiotics, as emerging persistent pollutants, pose significant threats to human health. The effective and low-cost removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) from wastewater has become an important research focus. In this study, fly ash (FA) was used as the raw material, and modified fly ash (MFA) was prepared by varying microwave power, alkali concentration, and immersion time to investigate its adsorption characteristics for CIP. Results showed that the optimal preparation conditions for MFA with the most effective adsorption of CIP, using the Box-Behnken response surface methodology, were a microwave power of 480 W, an alkali concentration of 1.5 mol/L, and a modification time of 3 h. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that after modification, the glassy structure of FA is destroyed, the specific surface area is increased, and obvious hydroxyl O-H absorption peaks appear. Both FA and MFA exhibited adsorption processes for CIP that conformed to pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir equation. Maximum adsorption of CIP (9.61 and 12.67 mg/g) was achieved at pH = 6. With increasing temperature, the adsorption capacity of both FA and MFA for CIP decreased, indicating an exothermic process. The adsorption capacity of CIP decreased with increasing ion concentration, with the impact order of ions being Al 3+  > Ca 2+  > Na + . The results show that pore filling, electrostatic interaction, ion exchange and complexation are the main ways of CIP adsorption by FA. Microwave alkali modified fly ash is an economical and efficient adsorbent for CIP removal in water, realizing the purpose of "treating waste with waste". Human activity intensity should be controlled within the carrying capacity of soil units, which is crucial for environmental sustainability. However, the existing assessment methods for soil environmental carrying capacity (SECC) rarely consider the relationship between human activity intensity and pollutant emissions, making it difficult to provide effective early warning of human activity intensity. Moreover, there is a lack of spatial high-precision accounting methods for SECC. This study first established a spatial soil environmental capacity (SEC) model based on the pollutant thresholds corresponding to the specific protection target. Next, a spatial net-input flux model was proposed based on soil pollutants' input/output fluxes. Then, the quantitative relationship between human activity intensity and pollutant emissions was established and further incorporated into the SECC model. Finally, the spatial high-precision accounting framework of SECC was proposed. The methodology was used to assess the SECC for the copper production capacity in a typical copper smelting area in China. The results showed that (i) the average SECs for Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, As and Cr are 427.89, 16.84, 306.41, 376.8, 71.63, and 392.7 kg hm -2 , respectively; (ii) heavy metal (HM) concentrations and land-use types jointly influence the spatial distribution pattern of SEC; (iii) atmospheric deposition is the dominant HM input pathway and the high net-input fluxes are mainly located in the southeast of the study area; (iv) with the current human activity intensity for 50 years, the average SECs for Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, As and Cr are 202.31, 1.71, 20.9, 66.15, 36.73, and 3 kg hm -2 , respectively; and (v) to maintain the protection target at the acceptable risk level within 50 years, the SECC for the increased copper production capacity is 1.53 × 10 6  t. Exploration of the association between heavy metal bioaccessibility (BAc) and soil properties is essential for rationalization of risk assessment and remediation of contaminated soil; however, the high complexity of soil systems often yield conflicting outcomes. To avoid erroneous conclusions, individual comparisons of soil properties is essential. Herein, we determined the changes in the BAc of Pb and Cu with the variation in soil pH and SOC content using Unified Bioaccessibility Research Group of Europe method, and validated these findings with in vivo mouse bioassays. Results indicated that the BAc of Pb and Cu in gastric and intestinal phases decreased by 1.76%-3.92% and 0.90%-3.27%, and by 0.41%-6.01% and 0.67%-1.59%, respectively, with every unit increase in soil pH. Furthermore, with every 1% increase in the absolute content of SOC, the BAc of Pb and Cu decreased by 4.04%-13.94% and 4.01%-34.7%, and by 8.98%-30.15% and 9.58%-20.03%, respectively. The in vivo bioassays results confirmed decrease in Pb concentrations in the liver, kidney, and blood of mice with the increase in Ferralosol pH and SOC content. These findings revealed that the health risks associated with accidental exposures to Pb- and Cu-contaminated soils with high pH and SOC level were relatively low, and the consistent in vivo and in vitro results for the BAc of Pb and Cu suggest the requirement for a swift and simple approach for assessing the risks of heavy metal contaminated soils. Numerous Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) programs have been implemented simultaneously around the world but their outcomes in the literature are not consistent and their interactive effects remain understudied. The Natural Forest Conservation Program (NFCP) and Grain to Green Program (GTGP) are two largest PES programs in the world, and many studies have evaluated their effects on household income. However, the identified effects often varied across different studies and the factors explaining this variation are poorly understood. This study used linear regression and geographic detector analysis, based on questionnaire survey data from 14 giant panda natural reserves (NRs) in southwestern China, to evaluate the effects of the NFCP and GTGP on household income and the factors which moderate these effects. The results revealed that the effects of two PES programs on household income were spatially heterogeneous and enhanced by each other and livelihood activities, suggesting a synergistic interaction between policies and livelihood activities, particularly tourism. This study also found that livelihoods activities (e.g., labor migration and tourism), household capital (i.e., house area and farmland area) and demographic factors (i.e., number of labor and non-labor members), exhibit spatial heterogeneity in their effects on household income across NRs. Hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) play a significant role in contaminant transformation and element cycling during redox fluctuations in paddy soil. However, these important processes might be affected by widely used agricultural amendments, such as urea, pig manure, and biochar, which have rarely been explored, especially regarding their impact on soil aggregates and associated biogeochemical processes. Herein, based on five years of fertilization experiments in the field, we found that agricultural amendments, especially coapplication of fertilizers and biochar, significantly increased soil organic carbon contents and the abundances of iron (Fe)-reducing bacteria. They also substantially altered the fraction of soil aggregates, which consequently enhanced the electron-donating capacity and the formation of active Fe(II) species (i.e., 0.5 M HCl-Fe(II)) in soil aggregates (0-2 mm), especially in small aggregates (0-3 μm). The highest contents of active Fe(II) species in small aggregates were mainly responsible for the highest • OH production (increased by 1.7-2.4-fold) and naphthalene attenuation in paddy soil with coapplication of fertilizers and biochar. Overall, this study offers new insights into the effects of agricultural amendments on regulating • OH formation in paddy soil and proposes feasible strategies for soil remediation in agricultural fields, especially in soils with frequent occurrences of redox fluctuations.

Green hydrogen from electrolysis of water has attracted widespread attention as a renewable power source. Among several hydrogen production methods, it has become the most promising technology. However, there is no large-scale renewable hydrogen production system currently that can compete with conventional fossil fuel hydrogen production. Renewable energy electrocatalytic water splitting is an ideal production technology with environmental cleanliness protection and good hydrogen purity, which meet the requirements of future development. This review summarizes and introduces the current status of hydrogen production by water splitting from three aspects: electricity, catalyst and electrolyte. In particular, the present situation and the latest progress of the key sources of power, catalytic materials and electrolyzers for electrocatalytic water splitting are introduced. Finally, the problems of hydrogen generation from electrolytic water splitting and directions of next-generation green hydrogen in the future are discussed and outlooked. Near-infrared light-driven photocatalytic CO 2 reduction (NIR-CO 2 PR) holds tremendous promise for the production of valuable commodity chemicals and fuels. However, designing photocatalysts capable of reducing CO 2 with low energy NIR photons remains challenging. Herein, a novel NIR-driven photocatalyst comprising an anionic Ru complex intercalated between NiAl-layered double hydroxide nanosheets (NiAl-Ru-LDH) is shown to deliver efficient CO 2 photoreduction (0.887 μmol h -1 ) with CO selectivity of 84.81 % under 1200 nm illumination and excellent stability over 50 testing cycles. This remarkable performance results from the intercalated Ru complex lowering the LDH band gap (0.98 eV) via a compression-related charge redistribution phenomenon. Furthermore, transient absorption spectroscopy data verified light-induced electron transfer from the Ru complex towards the LDH sheets, increasing the availability of electrons to drive CO 2 PR. The presence of hydroxyl defects in the LDH sheets promotes the adsorption of CO 2 molecules and lowers the energy barriers for NIR-CO 2 PR to CO. Background: Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is the most common thyroid tumor (TC). However, there is still a lack of effective indicators for PTC detection and prognosis. We intended to find a novel tumor marker for the progression of PTC., Methods: The expression of circRNAs was measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). SiRNA transfection was used to knockdown the expression of hsa&#95;circ&#95;0010023 in K1 cells. Cell proliferation was evaluated using cell counting and CCK8. Cell apoptosis was analyzed using flow cytometry. Hsa&#95;circ&#95;0010023 downstream pathways were predicted with bio-informatics analysis. The miR-1250-5p and MAPK1 were measured by qRT-PCR. The interaction between miR-1250-5p and hsa&#95;circ&#95;0010023 was vertified by dual-luciferase reporter assay., Results: Among the four circRNAs screened, only hsa&#95;circ&#95;0010023 and hsa&#95;circ&#95;0128482 were highly expressed in PTC (P < 0.05). The expression of hsa&#95;circ&#95;0010023 was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis and extrathyroid infiltration (P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, the cell proliferation of the si-circ-0010023 group was significantly inhibited (P < 0.05). Knockdown of hsa&#95;circ&#95;0010023 promotes apoptosis of K1 cells (P < 0.001). The expression of hsa&#95;circ&#95;0010023 was negatively correlated with miR-1250-5p and positively correlated with MAPK1. MiR-1250-5p overexpression significantly reduced the luciferase activity of wild type plasmid (hsa&#95;circ&#95;0010023 WT), but not that of mutant type plasmid (hsa&#95;circ&#95;0010023 MUT)., Conclusion: The expression level of hsa&#95;circ&#95;0010023 was positive related to the progression of PTC, and hsa&#95;circ&#95;0010023 may promote PTC through sponging miR-1250-5p. The accumulation of antimony (Sb) in plants and its potential effects on human health are of increasing concern. Nevertheless, only a few countries or regions have established soil Sb thresholds for agricultural purposes, and soil properties have not been taken into account. This study investigated the accumulation of Sb in the edible parts of pakchoi and wheat grain by adding exogenous Sb to 21 soils with varying properties. The results revealed a positive correlation between bioavailable Sb (Sb ava , extracted by 0.1 M K 2 HPO 4 ) in soil and Sb in the edible parts of pakchoi (R 2  = 0.77, p < 0.05) and wheat grain (R 2  = 0.54, p < 0.05). Both machine learning and traditional multiple regression analysis indicated Sb ava was the most critical feature and the main soil properties that contributed to Sb uptake by pakchoi and wheat were CaCO 3 and clay, respectively. The advisory food limits for Sb in pakchoi and wheat were estimated based on health risk assessment, and used to derive soil thresholds for safe pakchoi and wheat production based on Sb tot and Sb ava , respectively. Understanding the soil pollutants' net input fluxes is essential for accurate early warning of regional soil pollution. However, the traditional input-output investigation method for soil pollutants' net input fluxes is often costly, especially at the regional scale. This study first assessed the land-use effects on soil heavy metals around a typical copper smelting area in China. Next, an improved spatial source apportionment receptor model, namely robust absolute principal component scores/robust geographically weighted regression with category land-use information (RAPCS/RGWR-CLU), was proposed to apportion the net source contributions, and its performance was compared with those of RAPCS/RGWR and the traditional absolute principal component scores/multiple linear regression (APCS/MLR). Finally, the net input fluxes of soil heavy metals were determined based on RAPCS/RGWR-CLU, and its performance was compared with that of the traditional input-output investigation method. Results showed that (i) land-use effects are significant for soil As, Cu, Pb, and Zn; (ii) RAPCS/RGWR-CLU achieves higher source apportionment accuracy than RAPCS/RGWR and APCS/MLR; and (iii) the net input fluxes determined by RAPCS/RGWR-CLU have similar accuracy to those determined by the traditional input-output investigation method but with significantly lower costs. The paddy field is a hot area of biogeochemical process. The paddy water has a large capacity in photo-generation of reactive intermediates (RIs) due to abundant photosensitive dissolved organic matter (DOM), which is influenced by the spatial heterogeneity of paddy soils but rarely been explored. Our work presents the first investigation of the role of soil properties on photochemistry in paddy water. Soil organic matter (SOM), determined by the temperature, was the dominant factor for the photo-generation of RIs in paddy water of main rice producing areas. The RI concentrations generated with abundant SOM from cool regions are 0.05-8.71 times higher than those for the warm regions in China. The humic-like substance and aromatic-like compounds of DOM plays an essential role in RIs generation, which is abundant in paddy soils rich in SOM from Chinese cool regions. In addition, RIs can efficiently accelerate the photo-ammonification of urea and free amino acids by 15.2 %-164 %, leading to 0.13-0.17 mmol/L/d photo-produced ammonium after fertilization, which is preferentially absorbed by rice. The findings of this study will extend our knowledge of the geochemistry of global paddy field ecosystem. Background: Gut microbiota and their metabolites play a regulatory role in skeletal muscle growth and development, which be known as gut-muscle axis. 3-phenylpropionic acid (3-PPA), a metabolite produced by colonic microorganisms from phenylalanine in the gut, presents in large quantities in the blood circulation. But few study revealed its function in skeletal muscle development., Results: Here, we demonstrated the beneficial effects of 3-PPA on muscle mass increase and myotubes hypertrophy both in vivo and vitro. Further, we discovered the 3-PPA effectively inhibited protein degradation and promoted protein acetylation in C2C12 and chick embryo primary skeletal muscle myotubes. Mechanistically, we supported that 3-PPA reduced NAD + synthesis and subsequently suppressed tricarboxylic acid cycle and the mRNA expression of SIRT1/3, thus promoting the acetylation of total protein and Foxo3. Moreover, 3-PPA may inhibit Foxo3 activity by directly binding., Conclusions: This study firstly revealed the effect of 3-PPA on skeletal muscle growth and development, and newly discovered the interaction between 3-PPA and Foxo3/NAD + which mechanically promote myotubes hypertrophy. Research into kappa opioid receptor (KOR) agonists with attenuated central-nervous-system side effects is a critical focus for developing productive and safe analgesics. Herein, a series of ortho -substituted N -cyclopropylmethyl-7α-phenyl-6,14- endo ethano-tetrahydronorthebaines were designed, synthesized, and subjected to bioassays. Compound 7a exhibited high subtype selectivity and potent agonistic activity toward KOR (KOR, K i = 3.9 nM, MOR/KOR = 270, DOR/KOR = 1075; [ 35 S]GTPγS binding, EC 50 = 3.4 nM). Additionally, this compound exhibited robust and persistent antinociceptive effects in rodent models with different animal strains (hot plate test, ED 50 = 0.20-0.30 mg/kg, i.p.; abdominal constriction test, ED 50 = 0.20-0.60 mg/kg, i.p.), with its KOR-mediated mechanism for antinociception firmly established. Notably, compound 7a , unlike conventional KOR agonists, displayed minimal sedation and aversion at the antinociceptive ED 50 dose. This feature addresses a crucial limitation in existing KOR agonists, positioning compound 7a as a promising novel therapeutic agent.

Flooding of paddy fields during the rice growing season enhances arsenic (As) mobilization and greenhouse gas (e.g., methane) emissions. In this study, an adsorbent for dissolved organic matter (DOM), namely, activated carbon (AC), was applied to an arsenic-contaminated paddy soil. The capacity for simultaneously alleviating soil carbon emissions and As accumulation in rice grains was explored. Soil microcosm incubations and 2-year pot experimental results indicated that AC amendment significantly decreased porewater DOM, Fe(III) reduction/Fe 2+ release, and As release. More importantly, soil carbon dioxide and methane emissions were mitigated in anoxic microcosm incubations. Porewater DOM of pot experiments mainly consisted of humic-like fluorophores with a molecular structure of lignins and tannins, which could mediate microbial reduction of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides. Soil microcosm incubation experiments cospiking with a carbon source and AC further consolidated that DOM electron shuttling and microbial carbon source functions were crucial for soil Fe(III) reduction, thus driving paddy soil As release and carbon emission. Additionally, the application of AC alleviated rice grain dimethylarsenate accumulation over 2 years. Our results highlight the importance of microbial extracellular electron transfer in driving paddy soil anaerobic respiration and decreasing porewater DOM in simultaneously remediating As contamination and mitigating methane emission in paddy fields.

A polylactic acid degrading triacylglycerol lipase (TGL) was identified from Bacillus safensis based on genome annotation and validated by real-time quantitative PCR. TGL displayed optimal activity at pH 9.0 and 55 °C. It maintained stability at pH 9.0 and temperatures 45 °C. The activity of TGL was found to benefit from the presence of potassium sodium ions, and low concentrations of Triton X-100. The TGL could erode the surface of polylactic acid films and increase its hydrophilicity. The hydrolysis products of polylactic acid by TGL were lactate monomer and dimer. TGL contains a classical catalytic triad structure of lipase (Ser77, Asp133, and His156) and an Ala-X-Ser-X-Gly sequence. O'Donnell-Luria-Rodan (ODLURO) syndrome is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder caused by mutations in the KMT2E (lysine methyltransferase 2E) gene. The Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University admitted a 12-year and 9-month-old male patient who presented with growth retardation, intellectual disability, and distinctive facial features. Peripheral blood was collected from the patient, and DNA was extracted for genetic testing. Chromosome karyotyping showed 46XY. Whole-exome sequencing and low-coverage massively parallel copy number variation sequencing (CNV-seq) revealed a 506 kb heterozygous deletion in the 7q22.3 region, which includes 6 genes, including KMT2E . The patient was diagnosed with ODLURO syndrome. Both the patient's parents and younger brother had normal clinical phenotypes and genetic test results, indicating that this deletion was a de novo mutation. The clinical and genetic characteristics of this case can help increase clinicians' awareness of ODLURO syndrome.

Flash Joule heating (FJH) is an emerging and profitable technology for converting inexhaustible biomass into flash graphene (FG). However, it is challenging to produce biomass FG continuously due to the lack of an integrated device. Furthermore, the high-carbon footprint induced by both excessive energy allocation for massive pyrolytic volatiles release and carbon black utilization in alternating current-FJH (AC-FJH) reaction exacerbates this challenge. Here, we create an integrated automatic system with energy requirement-oriented allocation to achieve continuous biomass FG production with a much lower carbon footprint. The programmable logic controller flexibly coordinated the FJH modular components to realize the turnover of biomass FG production. Furthermore, we propose pyrolysis-FJH nexus to achieve biomass FG production. Initially, we utilize pyrolysis to release biomass pyrolytic volatiles, and subsequently carry out the FJH reaction to focus on optimizing the FG structure. Importantly, biochar with appropriate resistance is self-sufficient to initiate the FJH reaction. Accordingly, the medium-temperature biochar-based FG production without carbon black utilization exhibited low carbon emission (1.9 g CO 2 -eq g -1 graphene), equivalent to a reduction of up to ~86.1% compared to biomass-based FG production. Tandem nitrate electroreduction reaction (NO 3 - RR) is a promising method for green ammonia (NH 3 ) synthesis. However, the mismatched kinetics processes between NO 3 - -to-NO 2 - and NO 2 - -to-NH 3 results in poor selectivity for NH 3 and excess NO 2 - evolution in electrolyte solution. Herein, a Ni 2+ substitution strategy for developing oxide heterostructure in Co/Fe layered double oxides (LDOs) was designed and employed as tandem electrocataltysts for NO 3 - RR. (Co 0.83 Ni 0.16 ) 2 Fe exhibited a high NH 3 yield rate of 50.4 mg ⋅ cm -2  ⋅ h -1 with a Faradaic efficiency of 97.8 % at -0.42 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in a pulsed electrolysis test. By combining with in situ/operando characterization technologies and theoretical calculations, we observed the strong selectivity of NH 3 evolution over (Co 0.83 Ni 0.16 ) 2 Fe, with Ni playing a dual role in NO 3 - RR by i) modifying the electronic behavior of Co, and ii) serving as complementary site for active hydrogen (*H) supply. Therefore, the adsorption capacity of *NO 2 and its subsequent hydrogenation on the Co sites became more thermodynamically feasible. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are major organic pollutants attached to fine particulate matter in the atmosphere. They induce lung inflammation, asthma, and other lung diseases. Exploring the toxic mechanism of PAHs on lung epithelial cells may provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases induced by PAHs. In our study, 16 human bronchial epithelial (16HBE) cells were exposed to different concentrations of gypsum dust, Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), and BaP-loaded gypsum dust for 24 hours. Gypsum dust loaded with BaP significantly increased the cytotoxicity of 16HBE cells, enhanced the production of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL-8), induced cell apoptosis, and upregulate the expression of hsa&#95;circ&#95;0008500 (circ&#95;0008500). The mechanism was studied with a BaP-loaded gypsum dust concentration of 1.25 mg/mL. Background: Allergic asthma is an important respiratory system problem characterized by airway inflammation, breathlessness, and bronchoconstriction. Allergic asthma and its outcomes are triggered by type 2 allergic immune responses. Tectorigenin is a methoxy-isoflavone with anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of tectorigenin on the pathophysiology of allergic asthma in an animal model., Methods: Asthmatic mice were treated with tectorigenin. Then airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), eosinophil percentage, levels of interleukin (IL)-33, IL-25, IL-13, IL-5, IL-4, total and ovalbumin (OVA)-specific immunoglobulin (Ig)E, and lung histopathology were evaluated., Result: Tectorigenin significantly (P 〈 0.05) reduced eosinophil infiltration (41 ± 7%) in the broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF), serum IL-5 level (41 ± 5, pg/mL), and bronchial and vascular inflammation (scores of 1.3 ± 0.2 and 1.1 ± 0.3, respectively) but had no significant effects on AHR, serum levels of IL-33, -25, -13, and -4 (403 ± 24, 56 ± 7, 154 ± 11, and 89 ± 6 pg/mL, respectively), total and OVA-specific IgE (2684 ± 265 and 264 ± 19 ng/mL, respectively), goblet cell hyperplasia, and mucus production., Conclusion: Tectorigenin could control inflammation and the secretion of inflammatory mediators of asthma, so it can be regarded as a potential antiasthma treatment with the ability to control eosinophilia-related problems., (© 2024 The Authors. The establishment of ecological risk thresholds for arsenic (As) plays a pivotal role in developing soil conservation strategies. However, despite many studies regarding the toxicological profile of As, such thresholds varying by diverse soil properties have rarely been established. This study aims to address this gap by compiling and critically examining an extensive dataset of As toxicity data sourced from existing literature. Furthermore, to augment the existing information, experimental studies on As toxicity focusing on barley-root elongation were carried out across various soil types. The As concentrations varied from 12.01 to 437.25 mg/kg for the effective concentrations that inhibited 10% of barley-root growth (EC 10 ). The present study applied a machine-learning approach to investigate the complex associations between the toxicity thresholds of As and diverse soil properties. The results revealed that Mn-/Fe-ox and clay content emerged as the most influential factors in predicting the EC 10 contribution. Additionally, by using a species sensitivity distribution model and toxicity data from 21 different species, the hazardous concentration for x% of species (HCx) was calculated for four representative soil scenarios. The HC5 values for acidic, neutral, alkaline, and alkaline calcareous soils were 80, 47, 40, and 28 mg/kg, respectively. Iron (Fe) minerals are known to be effective adsorbents for arsenic (As). However, the effects of sulfur species formed from the reductive dissolution of Fe minerals on the transformation of As(III) during the redox fluctuations processes under ambient conditions were poorly understood. Herein, we synthesized the As(III)-Fe minerals using sodium arsenite and ferric nitrate to investigate the effects of sulfur species on As(III) transformation in the As(III)-Fe minerals. Experimental results showed that sulfite rather than elemental sulfur and thiosulfate significantly accelerated As(III) oxidation. The oxidation rate of As(III) increased markedly from 0.0050 to 0.0168 min -1 with the increase of sulfite concentration from 0.5 to 2.0 mM. Sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ) and hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) were identified as the dominant reactive species for As(III) oxidation. Besides, the underlying mechanism of Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycling for enhancing As(III) oxidation was further explored in the homogeneous Fe(II)/sulfite systems. Finally, interactions between sulfite and soil components induced radical formation, leading to As(III) oxidation in the soil environments. This study gives new insights into As(III) transformation co-existed with Fe minerals and sulfur species, which shed light on developing remediation strategies for regulating As contamination in temporarily flooded soils. The increasing application of metal nanoparticles (NPs) via agrochemicals and sewage sludge results in non-negligible phytotoxicological risks. Herein, the potential phytotoxicity of ZnO and CuO NPs on wheat was determined using integrative chemical, physiological, and metabolomics analyses, in comparison to Zn 2+ and Cu 2+ . It was found that ZnO or CuO NPs had a stronger inhibitory effect on wheat growth than Zn 2+ or Cu 2+ . After exposure to ZnO or CuO NPs, wheat seedlings accumulated significantly higher levels of Zn or Cu than the corresponding Zn 2+ or Cu 2+ treatments, indicating the active uptake of NPs via wheat root. TEM analysis further confirmed the intake of NPs. Moreover, ZnO or CuO NPs exposure altered micronutrients (Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn) accumulation in the tissues and decreased the activities of antioxidant enzymes. The metabolomics analysis identified 312, 357, 145, and 188 significantly changed metabolites (SCMs) in wheat root exposed to ZnO NPs, CuO NPs, Zn 2+ , and Cu 2+ , respectively. Most SCMs were nano-specific to ZnO (80%) and CuO NPs (58%), suggesting greater metabolic reprogramming by NPs than metal ions. The advance of high-throughput sequencing enhances the discovery of short ORFs embedded in long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). Here, we uncovered the production and biological activity of lncRNA-hidden polypeptides in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). In the present study, bioinformatics was used to screen the lncRNA-hidden polypeptides in LUAD. Analysis of protein expression was done by western blot or immunofluorescence assay. The functions of the polypeptide were determined by detecting its effects on cell viability, proliferation, migration, invasion, and pemetrexed (PEM) sensitivity. The protein interactors of the polypeptide were analyzed by mass spectrometry after Co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) assay. The results showed that the lncRNA LINC00954 was confirmed to encode a novel polypeptide LINC00954-ORF. The polypeptide had tumor-suppressor features in A549 cells by repressing cell growth, motility and invasion. Moreover, the polypeptide enhanced PEM sensitivity and suppressed growth in A549/PEM cells. The protein interactors of this polypeptide had close correlations with RNA processing, amide metabolic process, translation, RNA binding, RNA transport, and DNA replication. As a conclusion, the LINC00954-ORF polypeptide embedded in lncRNA LINC00954 possesses tumor-suppressor features in A549 and PEM-resistant A549 cells and sensitizes PEM-resistant A549 cells to PEM, providing evidence that the LINC00954-ORF polypeptide is a potential anti-cancer agent in LUAD., (© 2024. The photochemical processes of dissolved humic acid and its potential contribution to As(III) oxidation in natural water has received considerable attention. However, the role of mineral-humic complexes in As(III) conversion is rarely studied. Herein, two simulated mineral-humic complexes were prepared by coating humic acid on hydrous aluminum oxide, HA@HAO, or montmorillonite, HA@SWy, respectively, and batch experiments at circumneutral pH were performed under light irradiation. Our findings showed that the light-assisted oxidation of As(III) increased with increasing fractions of organic carbon in mineral-humic complexes, and As(III) photooxidation with HA@HAO or HA@SWy was up to 18.2 or 3.5-fold higher compared to that measured in the presence of equivalent amount of free HA, respectively. The reactive triplet state of HA and hydroxyl radicals in HA@HAO and HA@SWy system made a primary contribution to As(III) oxidation under irradiation. The results indicated that mineral-humic complexes have dual roles, an adsorbent and a photosensitizer, to promote As(III) access to reactive intermediates at the particle surfaces. This process was important for As(III) conversion in paddy water as colloidal particles, composed of both minerals and HA, could greatly promote As(III) oxidation and As(V) immobilization. Artificial photoenzymatic systems based on covalent organic frameworks (COFs) provide an interesting platform for converting CO 2 to value-added fuels. However, the dual roles of COFs as photocatalysts and enzyme hosts showcase contradictory preferences for structures, which poses a great challenge for their rational design. Herein, we report the collaborative matching of linkages and linkers in COFs on their ability to exert both photocatalytic activity and enzyme loading, which has been neglected until now. The linkage-dependent linker regulation pattern was elucidated, and the optimal match showed a record-breaking apparent quantum efficiency at 420 nm for photocatalytic cofactor regeneration of 13.95% with a high turnover frequency of 5.3 mmol g -1 h -1 , outperforming other reported crystalline framework photocatalysts. Moreover, theoretical calculations and experiments revealed the mechanism underlying the effects of matching the linkage and linker on exciton dissociation and charge migration in photocatalysis. This newfound understanding enabled the construction of COFs with both high photoactivity and large pores closer in size to the formate dehydrogenase, achieving high loading capacity and a suitable confinement effect. Remarkably, the artificial photoenzymatic system constructed according to optimal linkage-linker matching exhibited highly efficient CO 2 reduction, yielding formic acid with a specific activity as high as 1.46 mmol g -1 catalyst h -1 and good reusability, paving the way for sustainable CO 2 conversion driven by visible light.

DNA barcode sequence is a short DNA sequence representing a sample from a particular species. The commonly used DNA barcodes are at least 200 bps long. This large number of characters cannot be encoded in two-dimensional codes for sample recognition and tracking. In the present study, we described a method that can be used to compress the DNA sequences and then generate the corresponding QR code. Every year cancer causes approximately 10 million deaths globally. Researchers have developed numerous targeted drug delivery systems (DDSs) with nanoparticles, polymers, and liposomes, but these synthetic materials have poor degradability and low biocompatibility. Because DNA nanostructures have good degradability and high biocompatibility, extensive studies have been performed to construct DDSs with DNA nanostructures as the molecular-layer master frame (MF) assembled via programmable DNA-aided self-assembly for targeted drug release. To learn the progressing trend of self-assembly techniques and keep pace with their recent rapid advancements, it is crucial to provide an overview of their past and recent progress. In this review article, we first present the techniques to assemble the MF of a DDS with solely DNA strands; to assemble MFs with one or more additional type of construction materials, e.g., polymers (including RNA and protein), inorganic nanoparticle, or metal ions, in addition to DNA strands; and to assemble the more complex DNA nanocomplexes. It is observed that both the techniques used and the MFs constructed have become increasingly complex and that the DDS constructed has an increasing number of advanced functions. From our focused review, we anticipate that DDSs with the MF of multiple building materials and DNA nanocomplexes will attract an increasing number of researchers' interests. On the basis of knowledge about materials and functional components (e.g., targeting aptamers/peptides/antibodies and stimuli for drug release) obtained from previously performed studies, researchers can combine more materials with DNA strands to assemble more powerful MFs and incorporate more components to endow DDSs with improved or additional properties/functions, thereby subsequently contributing to cancer prevention.

Tumor hypoxia induces collagen deposition and extensive extracellular matrix remodeling, significantly enhancing the processes of invasion and metastasis. Collagen prolyl-4-hydroxylases (P4HA) play a critical role in collagen post-translational modification. The primary objective of this study is to comprehensively assess the role of P4HA in promoting ovarian cancer growth and facilitating metastasis. Human epithelial ovarian cancer cells were transfected with shRNAs to target P4HA1 and P4HA2. The impact of P4HA knockdown on crucial factors such as collagen I deposition, cell proliferation, and migration were examined in vitro . Additionally, in vivo studies involved the injection of both control and P4HA knockdown cells into athymic mice, enabling the assessment of tumor growth and peritoneal metastasis. The relevance of prolyl hydroxylases to clinical outcomes was then determined by analyzing clinical databases. Quantitative RT-PCR showed upregulation of P4HA1 and P4HA2 mRNA in A2780 cells when exposed to hypoxia. ShRNA-mediated downregulation of P4HA1 and P4HA2 significantly reduced the deposition of collagen I. Knockdown of P4HA expression reduced cell proliferation in vitro and peritoneal seeding in vivo . A2780 cells stably transfected with shP4HA1 and shP4HA2 inhibited tumor growth and metastases in athymic mice. Furthermore, our review of the TCGA dataset revealed that increased P4HA1 and P4HA2 mRNA levels are associated with decreased overall survival in patients with ovarian cancer. The increased expression of collagen P4HA has been linked to ovarian cancer growth and metastasis. Introduction: The Songnen Plain is one of the three major saline-alkali areas in China, covering a vast area, where drought and overgrazing have exacerbated the salinization trend, and will have great potential for development if utilized rationally. Phosphorus, as one of important soil nutrients, plays a crucial role in plant growth. How to minimize its loss and migration has become a current research hotspot. The objective of the present study was to elucidate the adsorption properties of phosphorus in soils affected by salinization and to establish the correlation between the potential for phosphorus release and soil properties., Methods: A batch treatment test was conducted in this study using three soils with the various salinization degrees to examine the impact of environmental factors on the adsorption properties and potential release of phosphorus., Results and Discussion: It was found that the maximum phosphorus adsorption by the three salinization soils in 0-360 minutes accounted for 86.8%-90.5% of the total adsorption capacity; the equilibrium adsorption capacity was: HS> MS> LS. In cases where the phosphorus level in the surrounding liquid is low, the three levels of salinized soils exhibited varying levels of phosphorus discharge, with the adsorbent acting as the origin of contaminants. The Pseudo-second-order model kinetics and Langmuir equation can well describe the adsorption process, and the adsorption process is spontaneous heat absorption with entropy increase. Increasing the pH led to an increase in the adsorption of phosphorus from the three salinized soils. Additionally, the adsorption was enhanced by introducing varying concentrations of Na + , Ca 2+ , and Al 3+ to the background solution. The phosphorus eutrophication release risk (ERI) demonstrated a gradual decline as temperature increased. Correlation analysis revealed a noteworthy positive correlation between TN, TP, and ERI, as well as a significant negative correlation between CEC, K + , and ERI. Furthermore, there was a highly significant negative correlation between coarse silt and fine silt. Soil urease is highly sensitive to soil heavy metal pollution, and thus its activity can be used as bio-indicator of soil health. However, little is known about the inhibition mechanisms of heavy metals on urease. The effects of dimetallic substitution (i.e., Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, and Zn) on the binding of urea in the urease and its subsequent decomposition were studied using quantum chemical methodologies with a urease mimic (phthalazine-dinickel complex). The dimetallic substitution altered the structural features of the dimetal complexes and the M-O bond length between the dimetals and the carbonyl-O of coordinated urea molecules, weakening the binding energies of urea in dimetal complexes, which further affected the transformation of urea. In the urea decomposition via intra-molecular proton transfer, all dimetal complexes have a high activation barrier due to the weak binding of urea in complexes and hydrogen bonding within urea molecules, which are therefore difficult to occur spontaneously. In the urea decomposition via water-assisted inter-molecular proton transfer, the addition of water molecules decreased the energy barrier of urea decomposition. Regardless of the urea decomposition pathway, the dimetallic substitution altered the M-O bond length and hydrogen bond pattern of intermediates and transition states, and also affected the leave of the resulting NH 3 from the dimetal complexes by regulating the C-N bond length within the decomposed urea molecule. Background: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) play a key role in tumor cell growth, drug resistance, recurrence, and metastasis. Proanthocyanidins (PC) is widely existed in plants and endowed with powerful antioxidant and anti-aging effects. Interestingly, recent studies have found that PC exhibits the inhibitory effect on tumor growth. However, the role of PC in CSCs of colorectal cancer (CRC) and molecular mechanism remain unclear., Methods: CCK-8, colony, and tumorsphere formation assay were used to evaluate cancer cell viability and stemness, respectively. Western blotting was used to detect the protein expression. Tumor xenograft experiments were employed to examine the tumorigenicity of CRC cells in nude mice., Results: PC decreased the proliferation of CRC cells (HT29 and HCT-116), and improved the sensitivity of CRC cells to oxaliplatin (L-OHP), as well as inhibited tumor growth in nude mice. Further studies showed that PC also down-regulated CSCs surface molecular and stemness transcriptional factors, while suppressed the formations of tumorspheres and cell colony in CRC. In addition, PC-impaired proteins expressions of p-GSK3β, β-catenin and DVL1-3. LiCl, an activator of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling, rescued PC-induced downregulation of CSCs markers, and reduction of tumorspheres and cell colony formation abilities in CRC cells. This brief proposes a 1-6 GHz broadband double-balanced mixer. On the basis of the standard Marchand balun mixer, two techniques to enhance the performance of the mixer are proposed. Firstly, by loading capacitors, the amplitude and phase imbalance of the balun at high frequencies are improved, thereby expanding the relative bandwidth of the mixer by 0.1. Secondly, by cascading a first-order LC filter at the intermediate-frequency (IF) port, the leakage of radio frequency (RF) and local oscillator (LO) signals at the IF port is reduced by approximately 8 dB and 7 dB, respectively. This brief analyzes the various parameters that affect balun indicators and designs a broadband balun with a double-layer spiral line structure. As a result of these technologies, a 1-6 GHz double-balanced mixer is realized. The chip area is 1.13 mm × 0.95 mm, and the isolation between the IF port and the RF port is 34 dB and yields 13.5 dBm input power at 1 dB compression point (IP1 dB). The chip is fabricated via the GaAs pHEMT process.

Background: LncRNAs and DNA methylation are both key regulators of tumorigenesis and immune regulation. However, the interaction between lncRNA and DNA methylation, their regulation and their clinical and immune relevance in gastric cancer (GC) remain unclear., Methods: In this study, we identified DNA methylation regulator-related lncRNAs through Pearson correlation analysis in The Cancer Genome Atlas datasets. Univariate Cox regression was used to screen DNA methylationrelated prognostic lncRNAs. Further, through least absolute shrinkage and selection operator Cox regression, a prognostic model based on 13 lncRNAs was established. Survival analysis and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis verified the accuracy of the model in predicting the survival of GC patients. Univariate and multivariate analyses also confirmed that the risk score obtained from the risk model could be applied as an independent prognostic factor for patients with GC. Furthermore, based on the risk score and other clinicopathological characteristics that can be used as independent prognostic factors, we constructed a nomogram that could accurately determine the survival time of each patient. In addition, a lncRNA score was constructed using a principal component analysis algorithm to quantify the DNA methylation-related lncRNA expression patterns of individual tumors., Results: We found that a higher lncRNA score indicated a worse the prognosis and was associated with a reduced tumor mutation burden and immunosuppression. A low lncRNA score was related to an increase in neoantigen load and an increase in the anti-PDL1/CTLA4 immunotherapy response. Additionally, a low lncRNA score was related to a significant therapeutic advantage and clinical benefit., Conclusions: This study describes a DNA methylation regulator-related lncRNA signature model, which provides a new approach for predicting therapeutic response and patient stratification in GC. Nonplanar porphyrins with out-of-plane distortions play crucial roles in many biological functions and chemical applications. The artificial construction of nonplanar porphyrins usually involves organic synthesis and modification, which is a highly comprehensive approach. However, incorporating porphyrins into guest-stimulated flexible systems allows to manipulate the porphyrin distortion through simple ad/desorption of guest molecules. Here, a series of porphyrinic zirconium metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is reported that exhibit guest-stimulated breathing behavior. X-Ray diffraction analysis and skeleton deviation plots confirm that the material suffers from porphyrin distortion to form a ruffled geometry under the desorption of guest molecules. Further investigation reveals that not only the degree of nonplanarity can be precisely manipulated but also the partial distortion of porphyrin in a single crystal grain can be readily achieved. As Lewis acidic catalyst, the MOF with nonplanar Co-porphyrin exhibits active properties in catalyzing CO 2 /propylene oxide coupling reactions. Iron (oxyhydr)oxides and organic matter (OM) are intimately associated in natural environments, and their fate might be linked to sulfur during sulfidation-reoxidation cycling. However, the coupling of DOM molecular fractionation with Fe and S transformations following a full sulfidation-reoxidation cycle remains poorly understood. Here, we reacted Fh and Fh-OM associations with S(-II) anaerobically and then exposed the sulfidic systems to air. S(-II) preferentially reacted with Fh to form inorganic S (e.g., mackinawite, S 0 , and S 2 2- ) over being incorporated into OM as organic S and therefore indirectly affected OM fate by altering Fe speciation. Fh sulfidation was inhibited by associated OM, and the main secondary Fe species were mackinawite, Fe(II)-OM compounds, and lepidocrocite. Concomitantly, organic molecules high in unsaturation, aromaticity, and molecular weight were detached from solid-phase Fe species due to their lower affinities for secondary Fe species than for Fh. During the reoxidation stage, the previously formed Fe(II) species were reoxidized to Fh with a stronger aggregation, which recaptured formerly released OM with higher selectivity. Additionally, •OH was generated from Fe(II) oxygenation and degraded a portion of the DOM molecules. Overall, these results have significant implications for Fe, C, and S cycling in S-rich environments characterized by oscillating redox conditions.

The discovery and development of novel μ-opioid receptor (MOR) antagonists is a significant area to combat Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). In this work, a series of para-substituted N-cyclopropylmethyl-nornepenthone derivatives were designed and synthesized and pharmacologically assayed. Compound 6a was identified as a selective MOR antagonist both in vitro and in vivo. Its molecular basis was elucidated using molecular docking and MD simulations. Nanotechnology offers great opportunities for numerous sectors in society. One important challenge in sustainable nanotechnology is the potential of trophic transfer of nanomaterials (NMs), which may lead to unintentional impacts on environmental and human health. Here, we highlight the key advances that have been made in recent 15 years with respect to trophic transfer of heterogeneous NMs, including metal-based NMs, carbon-based NMs and nanoplastics, across various aquatic and terrestrial food chains. Particle number-based trophic transfer factors (TTFs), rather than the variable mass-based TTFs, capture the particle-specific transfer, for which NMs exhibit dynamic and complex biotransformation (e.g., dissolution, sulfidation, reduction, and corona formation). Trophic transfer of NMs has toxicological significance to predators at molecular (e.g., increased oxidative stress and modified metabolites), physiological (e.g., feeding inhibition) and population (e.g., reproduction inhibition) levels. However, linking NM exposure and toxicity remains a challenge, partly due to the dynamic biotransformation along the food chain. Although NMs have been used to increase crop yield in agriculture, they can exert detrimental impacts on crop yield and modify crop quality, depending on NMs type, exposure dose, and crop species, with unknown consequences to human health via crop consumption. Background: Trauma is the leading cause of death among children worldwide. The inflammatory response of paediatric patients to multiple injuries can be monitored using serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels. This study aimed to assess the value of IL-6 levels in predicting the severity of paediatric trauma and its clinical association with disease activity., Method: We prospectively tested serum IL-6 levels and evaluated the Paediatric Trauma Score (PTS) and other clinical data among 106 paediatrics trauma patients from January 2022 to May 2023 at the Emergency Department of the Xi'an Children's Hospital in China. The relationship between IL-6 and trauma severity levels by PTS was analyzed statistically., Results: IL-6 levels were elevated in 76 (71.70%) of the 106 paediatric patients with trauma. Spearman's test showed a significant negative linear correlation between IL-6 and PTS (r s  = - 0.757, p < 0.001). IL-6 levels were moderate positively correlated with alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, white blood cells, blood lactic acid and interleukin 10 (r s  = 0.513, 0.600, 0.503, 0.417, 0.558, p < 0.01). IL-6 levels were positively correlated with hypersensitive C-reactive protein and glucose (r s  = 0.377, r s  = 0.389, respectively, p < 0.001). IL-6 levels were negatively correlated with fibrinogen and PH (r s  = - 0.434, p < 0.001; r s  = - 0.382, respectively, p < 0.001). Binary scatter plots further demonstrated higher levels of IL-6 correlated with lower PTS scores., Conclusion: Serum IL-6 levels significantly increased with increasing severity of paediatric trauma. Serum levels of IL-6 can function as important indicators for predicting disease severity and activity in paediatric trauma patients., (© 2023. Subretinal fibrosis is the end-stage sequelae of neovascular age-related macular degeneration. It causes local damage to photoreceptors, retinal pigment epithelium, and choroidal vessels, which leads to permanent central vision loss of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration. The pathogenesis of subretinal fibrosis is complex, and the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Therefore, there are no effective treatment options. A thorough understanding of the pathogenesis of subretinal fibrosis and its related mechanisms is important to elucidate its complications and explore potential treatments. The current article reviews several aspects of subretinal fibrosis, including the current understanding on the relationship between neovascular age-related macular degeneration and subretinal fibrosis; multimodal imaging techniques for subretinal fibrosis; animal models for studying subretinal fibrosis; cellular and non-cellular constituents of subretinal fibrosis; pathophysiological mechanisms involved in subretinal fibrosis, such as aging, infiltration of macrophages, different sources of mesenchymal transition to myofibroblast, and activation of complement system and immune cells; and several key molecules and signaling pathways participating in the pathogenesis of subretinal fibrosis, such as vascular endothelial growth factor, connective tissue growth factor, fibroblast growth factor 2, platelet-derived growth factor and platelet-derived growth factor receptor-β, transforming growth factor-β signaling pathway, Wnt signaling pathway, and the axis of heat shock protein 70-Toll-like receptors 2/4-interleukin-10. Background: The gastrointestinal tract contains a massive microbiota, and targeting the gut could be a potential intervention for sepsis. However, the interaction between sepsis and the intestinal microbiota is defined as an "incompletely understood bidirectional relationship"., Methods: This retrospective observational cohort study investigated the fecal microbiota of sepsis patients admitted to the Department of Critical Care Medicine of the Central Hospital of Wuhan, China, from May 2019 to January 2020. 14 septic patients were divided into the non-severe group and the severe group according to the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score. Herein, fecal samples were serially collected on admission, the third, fourth, and fifth days, and ICU discharge. The fecal microbiota was analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and its correlation with clinical parameters was evaluated., Results: Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria were dominant phyla at ICU admission, and fecal biodiversity was not significantly different between the non-severe group (APACHE II < 15) and the severe group (APACHE II > 15). However, the diversity of the gut microbiota was significantly lower at ICU discharge than that at ICU admission with the extension of treatment time. Further significant difference flora analysis (LEfSe) showed that the genera Veillonella and Ruminococcus were the most discriminant biomarkers at ICU admission in non-severe and severe patients, respectively, while Enterococcus was the most discriminant biomarker at ICU discharge in all septic patients. Of note, liver function tests, including ALT, AST, TBIL, and DBIL correlated with the prevalence of various bacterial genera., Conclusions: The diversity of the gut microbiota in patients with sepsis decreases dramatically during ICU stay, and there are distinct dynamic changes in gut microbiota among patients with different severity in sepsis., (© 2023. Interface oxygen vacancies (OVs) are commonly used to improve the catalytic performance of activators in persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes, but the underlying mechanism was not fully explored. This work reports a facile heat treatment method to regulate OVs in MoO 3-x to elucidate the mechanism of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated by OVs to degrade 2,4,4-Trichlorobiphenyl (PCB28). Electron spin resonance, free radical quenching, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy confirmed that both reducing Mo species and OVs of MoO 3-x surface were responsible for PMS activation. Further experiments and Density Function Theory (DFT) calculation suggest that OVs in MoO 3-x induced the formation of superoxide radical (O 2 •- ), and then O 2 •- was transformed into singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) or mediated PMS activation to generate radicals, which contritbued to 70.2% of PCB28 degradation. The steady-state concentrations of free radical calculated with the kinetics model show that OVs were more favorable to mediate PMS to generate hydroxyl radicals ( • OH) under oxic conditions, while reducing Mo species would like to induce PMS to produce sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ). Purpose: The classification of primary lung adenocarcinoma is complex and varied. Different subtypes of lung adenocarcinoma have different treatment methods and different prognosis. In this study, we collected 11 datasets comprising subtypes of lung cancer and proposed FL-STNet model to provide the assistance for improving clinical problems of pathologic classification in primary adenocarcinoma of lung., Methods: Samples were collected from 360 patients diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma and other subtypes of lung diseases. In addition, an auxiliary diagnosis algorithm based on Swin-Transformer, which used Focal Loss for function in training, was developed. Meanwhile, the diagnostic accuracy of the Swin-Transformer was compared to pathologists., Results: The Swin-Transformer captures not only information in the overall tissue structure but also the local tissue details in the images of lung cancer pathology. Furthermore, training FL-STNet with the Focal Loss function can further balance the difference in the amount of data between different subtypes, improving recognition accuracy. The average classification accuracy, F1, and AUC of the proposed FL-STNet reached 85.71%, 86.57%, and 0.9903. The average accuracy of the FL-STNet was higher by 17% and 34%, respectively, than in the senior pathologist and junior pathologist group., Conclusion: The first deep learning based on an 11-category classifier was developed for classifying lung adenocarcinoma subtypes based on WSI histopathology. Aiming at the deficiencies of the current CNN and Vit, FL-STNet model is proposed in this study by introducing Focal Loss and combining the advantages of Swin-Transformer model., (© 2023. Covalent organic polymers (COPs) are powerful candidates for achieving the visible-light-driven degradation of organic pollutants by virtue of structural designability, but their synthesis relies on harmful reagents and high temperatures, which weakens their associated green merits. Here, we report a novel strategy for combining sonochemistry with ion induction for the rapid preparation of acridine-functionalized COPs in green and mild aqueous solutions with tunable high yields of 80 to 90%. Photochemical studies reveal the ability of these COPs to harvest visible light and their sufficient conduction potentials for generating superoxide radicals. Furthermore, the photodegradation of methylene blue confirms the good photocatalytic activity and reusability of the zinc ion-based acridine-functionalized COP, which achieves 90.8% removal in 150 min and retains 82.5% activity after 5 reuse cycles, with a rate constant of up to 3.2 times that of commercial titanium dioxide nanoparticles. This strategy paves the way for the green, rapid, and mild synthesis of acridine-functionalized COPs, enabling visible light photocatalytic degradation for water treatment and energy conversion to advance in a thoroughly environmentally friendly and cost-effective manner.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common tumor with high morbidity and mortality. The use of oxaliplatin (L-OHP) as a first-line treatment for CRC is limited due to chemoresistance. Growing evidence have revealed that the existence of cancer stem-like cells (CSLCs) is one of the important reasons for drug resistance and recurrence of cancers. Dihydroartemisinin (DHA), a derivative of artemisinin, has showed anticancer effects on a variety of malignancies, in addition to its antimalarial effects. However, the effect and mechanism of DHA on CSLCs and chemosensitivity in CRC cells remains unclear. In this study, we found that DHA inhibited cell viability in HCT116 and SW620 cells. Moreover, DHA decreased cell clonogenicity, and improved L-OHP sensitivity. Furthermore, DHA treatment attenuated tumor sphere formation, and the expressions of stem cell surface marker (CD133 and CD44) and stemness-associated transcription factor (Nanog, c-Myc, and OCT4). Mechanistically, the present findings showed that DHA inhibited of AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. The activation of AKT/mTOR signaling reversed DHA-decreased cell viability, clonogenicity, L-OHP resistance, tumor sphere, and expressions of stemness-associated protein in CRC. The inhibitory effect of DHA on tumorigenicity of CRC cells has also been demonstrated in BALB/c nude mice. In conclusion, this study revealed that DHA inhibited CSLCs properties in CRC via AKT/mTOR signaling, suggesting that DHA may be used as a potential therapeutic agent for CRC., (© 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Background: The restoration of dental implants presents a unique challenge due to the intrinsic biomechanical differences between osseointegrated implants and natural teeth, and their subsequent responses to occlusal loading. However, controversy exists regarding the role that occlusion plays in the physiology of the peri-implant complex., Purpose: To provide an overview of the scientific literature regarding occlusion as it relates to implant dentistry and peri-implant disease., Materials and Methods: This article presents a narrative review on occlusal loading and its potential effects on the peri-implant complex, as well as some generally accepted guidelines for occlusion in implant dentistry., Results and Conclusions: Although there is strong evidence linking occlusal factors to mechanical complications of dental implants, the same cannot be said regarding biological complications. There is no clear scientific evidence on the relationship between occlusal overload and peri-implant disease. However, occlusal overload may be an accelerating factor for peri-implant disease in the presence of inflammation. As the biomechanical properties of dental implants differ from that of the natural dentition, modifications to classic concepts of occlusion may be necessary when dental implants are involved. Thus, clinical recommendations are proposed which function to minimize unfavorable occlusal forces on implant restorations and reduce the associated biological and mechanical complications., (© 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Increasing studies have been conducted to explore strategies for enhancing the catalytic performance of metal-doped C-N-based materials (e.g., cobalt (Co)-doped C 3 N 5 ) via heteroatomic doping. However, such materials have been rarely doped by phosphorus (P) with the higher electronegativity and coordination capacity. In current study, a novel P and Co co-doped C 3 N 5 (Co-xP-C 3 N 5 ) was developed for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and 2,4,4'-trichlorobiphenyl (PCB28) degradation. The PCB28 degradation rate increased by 8.16-19.16 times with Co-xP-C 3 N 5 compared to conventional activators under similar reaction conditions (e.g., PMS concentration). The state-of-the-art techniques, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance etc., were applied to explore the mechanism of P doping for enhancing Co-xP-C 3 N 5 activation. Results showed that P doping induced the formation of Co-P and Co-N-P species, which increased the contents of coordinated Co and improved Co-xP-C 3 N 5 catalytic performance. The Co mainly coordinated with the first shell layer of Co 1 -N 4 , with successful P doping occurring in the second shell layer of Co 1 -N 4 . The P doping favored electron transfer from the C to N atom near Co sites and thus strengthened PMS activation owing to its higher electronegativity.
